A former woman army officer has completed a 160-km run from <keyword id="19910854" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Srinagar" source="keywords">Srinagar</keyword> to <keyword id="22240259" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Drass" source="keywords">Drass</keyword> to mark the 25th anniversary of the <keyword id="21429298" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kargil-Vijay-Diwas" source="keywords">Kargil Vijay Diwas</keyword>. Lieutenant Colonel Barsha Rai (Retd) completed the run in four days.<br /><br />"I ran to honour our brave hearts who sacrificed their lives for the nation," she told PTI. Lt Col Rai, whose husband is an army officer in Kashmir, ran from Srinagar to the <keyword id="22541367" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kargil-War-Memorial" source="keywords">Kargil War Memorial</keyword> in Drass sector. The run began on July 19 and ended on July 22.<br /> <br />She was accompanied in stretches by the <keyword id="22544827" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chinar-Warriors-marathon-team" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Chinar Warriors marathon team" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Chinar Warriors marathon team">Chinar Warriors marathon team</keyword>. On completion of the run, they paid tributes to martyrs at the Kargil war memorial. She averaged 40 km per day.<br /><br />After starting from Srinagar, she moved to Wusan on Day 2, running to Sonamarg at an altitude of 9,000 feet. Day 3 saw her surmount the 11649 feet high <keyword id="22544828" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zojila-Pass" source="keywords">Zojila Pass</keyword> on the Srinagar-Leh national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the <keyword id="20224053" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ladakh-region" source="keywords">Ladakh region</keyword>, to reach Matayen, before reaching the memorial at Drass on Day 4.<br /><br />"I was in class 7 when the Kargil war started and my father Colonel Keshab Rai, who retired 10 years ago, had then moved out overnight (to the border) along with his entire unit. For fauzi families like ours, what followed were days of uncertainty, loss and despair. This run was not just a personal journey for me, but a tribute to the indomitable spirit of the soldiers who fought valiantly during the Kargil war," she said.<br /><br />"The physical pain my body endured in this run pale in comparison to the hardships faced by our soldiers during the war. Through this run, my aim was to raise awareness about the sacrifices made by our soldiers," she said.<br /><br /><keyword id="22544826" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lt-Col-Barsha-Rai" source="keywords">Lt Col Barsha Rai</keyword> is a fourth-generation army officer. Her great-grandfather was a Military Cross recipient. <p>The Golden State Warriors beat the Los Angeles Clippers 105-103 in a game that ended in a scuffle and featured multiple ejections.</p>
<p>After Jamal Crawford's three-pointer fell short as time expired, Chris Paul and Andrew Bogut got into a pushing-and-shoving match near the bench:</p>

Players like Stephen Curry and Draymond Green have admitted that they want to win 73 games and set a new record, and they had no intentions of resting in the final games if the record was still in play.</p><p>Warriors coach Steve Kerr has put the decision in their hands - he told reporters he would let players decide if they want to play or rest. GM Bob Myers concurred with that philosophy and <a href="http://blogs.mercurynews.com/kawakami/2016/04/11/gm-bob-myers-warriors-chase-73/?doing_wp_cron=1460400468.4599881172180175781250">gave his explanation to Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News</a>:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"The thing that's great about Steve is he's very collaborative and we have those conversations. We're true to each other and we say what we feel. When we talked about [going for 73 wins], I said the same thing. 'It's not ours. It's not our record; it's not my record.' I said that if I was an NBA player at the precipice of something like this, who is the GM to tell me that I can't go for it? I said I would resent that.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Because it's something that they worked towards, that they are at the cusp of, that's theirs. So it's their decision. And Steve agreed - said the same thing. It's not the organization's. It's not the coach's. Not the GM's, certainly. It's really the players. Because it's almost like letting somebody get to Mile 25 of a marathon and saying, 'You can't finish.' And the person's saying, 'I know I can. Let me try at least. Let me try to finish.' And you say, 'Actually, you're not going to get a chance.'"</p><p>Myers added, "All that's being accomplished, in my opinion, is theirs and I'm just proud of what they're doing."</p><p>The surprising part about this chase is that each night the Warriors play, the players are expending energy to beat teams that are giving their best shot every night. There's serious risk for burnout as players grind their way to 73 wins, as opposed to taking, say, 70, and relaxing and gearing up for the playoffs.</p><p>However, by putting the decision in the players' hands, it not only reinforces an open, positive culture, it puts the onus on players. The players themselves have said that winning a championship means more than 73 games. If they felt they were too tired, they would sit themselves. Warriors GM had a thoughtful explanation for letting players aim for the best record in NBA history and risk burning themselves out

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The popularity of all <keyword id="11961338" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="motorsports" source="Orion">motorsports</keyword> is on the rise, especially in the US.</li><li>While <keyword id="12137401" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nascar" source="Orion">NASCAR</keyword> and F1 are vastly different <keyword id="11893855" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="sports" source="Orion">sports</keyword>, there are some ideas they could steal from each other.</li></ul><p>Formula One and NASCAR are two very different forms of motorsport, but they could still stand to learn a thing or two from each other.</p><p>With the help of some friends over at <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/NASCAR/">r/NASCAR</a> and <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/">r/Formula1</a>, we put together a list of 17 things that would improve both series and help attract more fans.</p><h2>Things NASCAR should steal from F1</h2><h3>1. Fewer cars</h3><p>Most NASCAR races have 36 or 37 cars, but that number can reach 40 on the Superspeedways, like the Daytona 500. Even at the smaller numbers, there are just too many teams and too many cars that are not competitive. There are also too many drivers that even fans would have difficulty picking out in a lineup. </p><p>NASCAR doesn't need to go all the way to 20-car races like F1, but the races would be more entertaining with a less crowded track. The ideal number in stock-car racing is probably closer to 30, maybe even fewer on the short tracks. </p><div type="image" title="NASCAR at Martinsville Speedway" height="1440" width="2500" msid="92462822" hostid="261" sizebytes="609784"></div><h3>2. Simplify the points system</h3><p>You need a math degree to follow NASCAR's point system, one which Oprah Winfrey would be proud of ("YOU GET POINTS! AND YOU GET POINTS! AND YOU GET POINTS!").</p><p>NASCAR gives points to every car that starts a race, ranging from one point for last place to 40 points for the race winner. On top of that, the races are divided into stages, with the Top 10 drivers in each stage receiving points.</p><p>F1's points system is much easier for the average fan to digest, awarding points to the top 10 places in each race with a bonus point for the fastest lap. NASCAR would be better off awarding points to just the top 10 or 15 cars, with bonus points given to the lead driver at each stage. </p><h3>3. Bring back the season-long points championship</h3><p>The NASCAR playoffs are fun, but they also significantly reduce the probability that the best driver of the year will win the championship. The format also opens the door to the possibility of crowning a season champion with zero regular-season wins, while also allowing some of the best drivers to take the middle of the season "off" once they have secured a spot in the playoffs.</p><p>Not every season will come down to the final laps of the last race, as the 2021 F1 season did, but championships should indicate who the best drivers are each season.</p><p>Want to keep the playoffs? Fine. Award a second trophy and a huge check to the winner. But let the top drivers decide the championship all season long.</p><div type="image" title="Jimmie Johnson" height="1667" width="2500" msid="92462823" hostid="261" sizebytes="281646"></div><h3>4. Improve the race broadcasts</h3><p>F1's graphics are cleaner and scream "high-class." Their announcers also explain the race to the audience better, especially race strategies, without dumbing it down too much. </p><p>While F1's days of being commercial-free in the US are numbered, the race will still be prioritized, <a href="https://twitter.com/A_S12/status/1530285617623490560?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1530285617623490560%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.insider.com%2Fpost%2Fpreview%3Fpost_id%3D629fa58b489f452c90661396mode%3Ddesktop">possibly with split-screen ads</a>. Those moments are too few in NASCAR as a lot of action is lost during commercial breaks.</p><p>And while we are here, NASCAR needs to add captions to the radio communications between the drivers and their teams.</p><div type="image" title="F1 radio" height="563" width="962" msid="92462824" hostid="261" sizebytes="30324"></div><h3>5. Shorter races</h3><p>F1 races are often 90-100 minutes and cannot exceed two hours. If the race is still going when the clock hits zero, they drop the white flag and race one final lap.</p><p>A couple of marathon races each season is fine. However, if NASCAR wants to reach a bigger (i.e., modern) audience, they need more races that are easily digestible. </p><h3>6. Podiums</h3><p>Like the Olympics, F1 doesn't just celebrate the winner. They also honor those who finish second and third. While the best drivers are measured by championships and wins, other drivers are measured by the number of podiums they achieve. </p><p>While we already mentioned that NASCAR gives participation points to too many drivers, they should open the winner's circle to more and let the top three drivers pour Bud Lights over each other.</p><div type="image" title="Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen" height="1771" width="2500" msid="92462825" hostid="261" sizebytes="1066950"></div><h3>7. Make the drivers and teams more recognizable</h3><p>NASCAR has a sponsorship problem impacting its fan base. Season-long sponsorship deals are no longer the norm, and it is rare now to see drivers in the same paint and color scheme all season long.</p><p>The result is that drivers are often no longer instantly recognizable on the track in the same way that Dale Earnhardt was always in the black No. 3 late in his career or Jeff Gordon was always in the Rainbow Warrior No. 24. </p><p>In F1, no matter who sponsors the cars, the liveries are instantly recognizable for each team, and their fans are easy to identify off the track. Different tire compounds</h3><p>In each F1 race — assuming there is no rain — teams have three different tires to choose from, ranging from soft to hard. Better scheduling</h3><p>One thing that has made F1 easier for American fans to embrace is most races take place on Sunday mornings. While that is not ideal for maximizing an audience, the races are not getting lost in the shadows of more popular North American sports.</p><p>This is something that NASCAR struggles with, especially late in the season. Their most important races are often going head-to-head with the NFL. When audience numbers should be going up, they are losing TV eyes to the almighty football.</p><p>Morning races are probably not the answer, but more Saturday and weeknight races might be.</p><div type="image" title="NASCAR" height="1667" width="2500" msid="92462828" hostid="261" sizebytes="215338"></div><h3>10. "Drive to Survive"</h3><p>It won't be long before most sports will have their own version of the wildly popular Netflix series, "Drive to Survive."</p><p>While the show introduced a new audience to the excitement on the track and the politics off it, its bigger impact was making superstars of all 20 drivers and even some of the team principals and CEOs. The most famous names in NASCAR are no longer racing and the casual sports fan would have a difficult time naming five active drivers. </p><p>Turning the drivers into household names should be NASCAR's top priority and a Netflix series would make that possible.</p><div type="image" title="Drive to Survive" height="1080" width="1920" msid="92462829" hostid="261" sizebytes="197748"></div><h2>Things F1 should steal from NASCAR</h2><h3>1. Bigger grid</h3><p>F1 doesn't need to go to 36 cars, or even 30, but 20 still feels too small and exclusive. A sweeter number is probably 24 cars with 12 teams.</p><p>Like many things, this comes down to money. While people like Michael Andretti are begging for a spot at the table, it is still not clear if other teams will ever be talked into splitting the revenue pie into more pieces without guaranteeing that the pie will get bigger.</p><p>However, from a purely sporting perspective, a few more cars would mean more opportunities for deserving young drivers and would create a better product on the track.</p><h3>2. Overtime</h3><p>One change NASCAR has nailed in the last 20 years is that drivers always race to the finish with the green-white-checkered overtime. If a caution comes out at the end of the race, the field is reset, the race is extended, and they race two laps to the end. If another caution comes out before the final lap, they do it all over again.</p><p>F1 could run into a fuel issue if a race were extended. However, that seems easily fixable by just allowing all cars to add more fuel before the start of overtime.</p><h3>3. Throwback races</h3><p>Every year, NASCAR has one race at Darlington where all the cars honor old drivers, cars, and teams with throwback paint schemes. </p><p>This feels like an easy win for F1. </p><div type="image" title="Mario Andretti" height="1647" width="2500" msid="92462830" hostid="261" sizebytes="173586"></div><h3>4. An oval track</h3><p>Oval racing is often looked down upon by F1 fans who ridicule drivers for only having to know how to make left-hand turns.</p><p>However, when <a href="https://www.insider.com/video-f1-drivers-kevin-magnussen-mick-schumacher-drive-nascar-car-2022-5">F1 drivers Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher took a NASCAR car for a spin</a>, they called the experience scary and commented on the difficulty of managing the banking in the corners. Likewise, long-time F1 driver <a href="https://www.insider.com/romain-grosjean-indy-500-qualifying-scary-2022-5">Romain Grosjean called his first Indianapolis 500 qualifying session "scary."</a> Even <a href="https://www.insider.com/daniel-ricciardo-f1-future-nascar-2022-5">Daniel Ricciardo, a long-time NASCAR fan, recently told Insider that he doesn't think he will ever try NASCAR</a> because he doesn't have any experience with the challenges of oval racing. </p><p>There are technical and safety issues that would need to be resolved first. Of course, the biggest question is "Where?" — the US already has three races, which would seemingly eliminate Indianapolis. However, if those questions can be addressed, it would be fun for the fans to see F1 cars put the pedal down for 100 laps on an oval.</p><h3>5. Side-by-side rolling restarts</h3><p>Nothing beats the first few corners and the semi-organized chaos on lap one of an F1 race. NASCAR gives this to fans a dozen times every race with two-wide rolling restarts.</p><p>While F1 will occasionally use two-wide standing restarts from the grid after a red flag, a rolling restart is a nice compromise that adds excitement and allows the top two cars a better chance to keep their advantage over the rest of the field.</p><div type="image" title="NASCAR" height="1667" width="2500" msid="92462831" hostid="261" sizebytes="542650"></div><h3>6. That came after the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, where several drivers lost their places on the grid when race directors changed a safety car to a red flag. Their announcers also explain the race to the audience better, especially race strategies, without dumbing it down too much. </p><p>While F1's days of being commercial-free in the US are numbered, the race will still be prioritized, <a href="https://twitter.com/A_S12/status/1530285617623490560?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1530285617623490560%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.insider.com%2Fpost%2Fpreview%3Fpost_id%3D629fa58b489f452c90661396mode%3Ddesktop">possibly with split-screen ads</a>. Those moments are too few in NASCAR as a lot of action is lost during commercial breaks.</p><p>And while we are here, NASCAR needs to add captions to the radio communications between the drivers and their teams.</p><div type="image" title="F1 radio" height="563" width="962" msid="92089134" hostid="261"></div><h3>5. Shorter races</h3><p>F1 races are often 90-100 minutes and cannot exceed two hours. If the race is still going when the clock hits zero, they drop the white flag and race one final lap.</p><p>A couple of marathon races each season is fine. However, if NASCAR wants to reach a bigger (i.e., modern) audience, they need more races that are easily digestible. </p><h3>6. Podiums</h3><p>Like the Olympics, F1 doesn't just celebrate the winner. They also honor those who finish second and third. While the best drivers are measured by championships and wins, other drivers are measured by the number of podiums they achieve. </p><p>While we already mentioned that NASCAR gives participation points to too many drivers, they should open the winner's circle to more and let the top three drivers pour Bud Lights over each other.</p><div type="image" title="Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen" height="1771" width="2500" msid="92089136" hostid="261"></div><h3>7. Make the drivers and teams more recognizable</h3><p>NASCAR has a sponsorship problem impacting its fan base. Season-long sponsorship deals are no longer the norm, and it is rare now to see drivers in the same paint and color scheme all season long.</p><p>The result is that drivers are often no longer instantly recognizable on the track in the same way that Dale Earnhardt was always in the black No. 3 late in his career or Jeff Gordon was always in the Rainbow Warrior No. 24. </p><p>In F1, no matter who sponsors the cars, the liveries are instantly recognizable for each team, and their fans are easy to identify off the track. More consistent color schemes in NASCAR, regardless of sponsor, might cost the teams a little money up front, but it would go a long way toward rebuilding driver and team identities for the fans.</p><div type="image" title="Charles Leclerc leads Max Verstappen at the Bahrain Gran Prix." height="1667" width="2500" msid="92089139" hostid="261"></div><h3>8. Different tire compounds</h3><p>In each F1 race — assuming there is no rain — teams have three different tires to choose from, ranging from soft to hard. Softer tires offer more grip and higher speeds, but they don't last as long.</p><p>Choosing the best tire strategy can be challenging for the teams, but it adds a layer of complexity to the race that is simple enough for the fans to understand and follow.</p><div type="image" title="Formula 1 tyre compounds" height="507" width="879" msid="92089140" hostid="261"></div><h3>9. Better scheduling</h3><p>One thing that has made F1 easier for American fans to embrace is most races take place on Sunday mornings. While that is not ideal for maximizing an audience, the races are not getting lost in the shadows of more popular North American sports.</p><p>This is something that NASCAR struggles with, especially late in the season. Their most important races are often going head-to-head with the NFL. When audience numbers should be going up, they are losing TV eyes to the almighty football.</p><p>Morning races are probably not the answer, but more Saturday and weeknight races might be.</p><div type="image" title="NASCAR" height="1667" width="2500" msid="92089142" hostid="261"></div><h3>10. "Drive to Survive"</h3><p>It won't be long before most sports will have their own version of the wildly popular Netflix series, "Drive to Survive."</p><p>While the show introduced a new audience to the excitement on the track and the politics off it, its bigger impact was making superstars of all 20 drivers and even some of the team principals and CEOs. The most famous names in NASCAR are no longer racing and the casual sports fan would have a difficult time naming five active drivers. </p><p>Turning the drivers into household names should be NASCAR's top priority and a Netflix series would make that possible.</p><div type="image" title="Drive to Survive" height="1080" width="1920" msid="92089144" hostid="261"></div><h2>Things F1 should steal from NASCAR</h2><h3>1. Bigger grid</h3><p>F1 doesn't need to go to 36 cars, or even 30, but 20 still feels too small and exclusive. A sweeter number is probably 24 cars with 12 teams.</p><p>Like many things, this comes down to money. While people like Michael Andretti are begging for a spot at the table, it is still not clear if other teams will ever be talked into splitting the revenue pie into more pieces without guaranteeing that the pie will get bigger.</p><p>However, from a purely sporting perspective, a few more cars would mean more opportunities for deserving young drivers and would create a better product on the track.</p><h3>2. Overtime</h3><p>One change NASCAR has nailed in the last 20 years is that drivers always race to the finish with the green-white-checkered overtime. If a caution comes out at the end of the race, the field is reset, the race is extended, and they race two laps to the end. If another caution comes out before the final lap, they do it all over again.</p><p>F1 could run into a fuel issue if a race were extended. However, that seems easily fixable by just allowing all cars to add more fuel before the start of overtime.</p><h3>3. Throwback races</h3><p>Every year, NASCAR has one race at Darlington where all the cars honor old drivers, cars, and teams with throwback paint schemes. </p><p>This feels like an easy win for F1. </p><div type="image" title="Mario Andretti" height="1647" width="2500" msid="92089147" hostid="261"></div><h3>4. An oval track</h3><p>Oval racing is often looked down upon by F1 fans who ridicule drivers for only having to know how to make left-hand turns.</p><p>However, when <a href="https://www.insider.com/video-f1-drivers-kevin-magnussen-mick-schumacher-drive-nascar-car-2022-5">F1 drivers Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher took a NASCAR car for a spin</a>, they called the experience scary and commented on the difficulty of managing the banking in the corners. Likewise, long-time F1 driver <a href="https://www.insider.com/romain-grosjean-indy-500-qualifying-scary-2022-5">Romain Grosjean called his first Indianapolis 500 qualifying session "scary."</a> Even <a href="https://www.insider.com/daniel-ricciardo-f1-future-nascar-2022-5">Daniel Ricciardo, a long-time NASCAR fan, recently told Insider that he doesn't think he will ever try NASCAR</a> because he doesn't have any experience with the challenges of oval racing. </p><p>There are technical and safety issues that would need to be resolved first. Of course, the biggest question is "Where?" — the US already has three races, which would seemingly eliminate Indianapolis. However, if those questions can be addressed, it would be fun for the fans to see F1 cars put the pedal down for 100 laps on an oval.</p><h3>5. Side-by-side rolling restarts</h3><p>Nothing beats the first few corners and the semi-organized chaos on lap one of an F1 race. NASCAR gives this to fans a dozen times every race with two-wide rolling restarts.</p><p>While F1 will occasionally use two-wide standing restarts from the grid after a red flag, a rolling restart is a nice compromise that adds excitement and allows the top two cars a better chance to keep their advantage over the rest of the field.</p><div type="image" title="NASCAR" height="1667" width="2500" msid="92089149" hostid="261"></div><h3>6. No work on cars during red flags</h3><p><a href="https://www.espn.com/f1/story/_/id/32819310/mclaren-lando-norris-hits-red-flag-tyre-changes-worst-rule-ever-invented">McLaren's Lando Norris called F1's rule allowing tire changes under red flags</a> "possibly the worst rule ever invented by someone." That came after the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, where several drivers lost their places on the grid when race directors changed a safety car to a red flag. Those who pitted under the safety car lost track position, while those who did not were rewarded with fresh tires and no loss in driving order under the red.</p><p>In NASCAR, red flags stop everything, to the point that cars are often left where they are on the track until the situation is resolved. </p><div type="image" title="NASCAR red flag" height="1666" width="2500" msid="92089151" hostid="261"></div><h3>7. Crank it up!</h3><p>The cars in both series are technological wonders that go really fast and are really loud.</p><p>It is impossible to truly sense the speeds and sounds without being at the race, but NASCAR broadcasts get the fans closer during their "Crank it up!" segments where the announcers shut up, and those watching at home can let their senses be flooded by nothing but the cars.</p><p>F1 could use a little more of this.</p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/4j7AZAodal8" frameborder="0"></iframe>

He's made a point of propping up his teammates as important pieces of the puzzle, particularly Kevin Love, who <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lebron-james-and-kevin-loves-relationship-in-year-2-2015-11">he's claimed to hand the offense to</a>.</p><p>"I told you Kevin is going to be our main focus," James said at the beginning of the season. "He's going to have a hell of a season. He's going to get back to that All-Star status. He's the focal point of us offensively."</p><p>Compare this to when he joined the Miami Heat and Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, two superstars, had to take a backseat to LeBron, because it was simply the best option for success.</p><p>Prior to the season, LeBron also said that letting Love and Kyrie Irving play bigger parts in the offense would let him play fewer minutes. With a nagging back&#xa0;that's required anti-inflammatory shots and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-lebron-james-took-the-break-2015-10">weeks off</a>, James would need the time off if he hopes to be healthy when the playoffs begin. <a href="http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/insider/story/_/id/14282446/what-lebron-james-learn-demise-kobe-bryant-nba?ex_cid=espnapi_public">As ESPN's Tom Haberstroh writes</a>, that 36,000-minute mark has proven to be a slippery slope for players as their bodies start to break down.</p><p>However, some of James' actions this season don't reflect an understanding of the need to pace himself. Similarly, one doesn't get the sense that LeBron is particularly relaxed about his status and the Cavs' place&#xa0;on the NBA food chain.</p><p>Some of James' comments after losses reflect this intensity. <a href="http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2015/12/lebron_james_david_blatt_caval_4.html#incart_river_index">As Joe Vardon of the Northeast Ohio Media Group notes</a>, James said the Cavs' give "half-ass" efforts after they lost a double overtime game on the second night of a back-to-back against the Bucks. He's ripped the team's intensity, calling them entitled and saying they're not as hungry as the Warriors, despite losing to them in the Finals last year.</p><p>The Warriors, in particular seem to be a thorn in James' side.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5661fb3fc2814477008b7943-1503-1127/lebron.jpg" alt="lebron" data-mce-source="Jason Miller/Getty"><p class="source"><span>Jason Miller/Getty</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div><p>In a <a href="http://www.si.com/nba/2015/12/01/lebron-james-cleveland-cavaliers-kobe-bryant-stephen-curry-dwyane-wade">profile of LeBron from SI's Lee Jenkins</a>, the Warriors are painted as something LeBron is chasing. Jenkins describes a scene in which James couldn't sleep and then watched the Warriors dismantle the Raptors until 3 a.m., jealous of the joy and energy with which they play. When LeBron, unprovoked, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lebron-james-says-warriors-are-healthiest-team-2015-11">brought up the Warriors' least favorite critique</a>, their team health, saying they'd be more impressive if they were winning without Stephen Curry, it seemed like a measured comment.</p><p>As Jenkins notes, James plays with rage this season, and the Cavs are not a particularly joyous team, despite their 13-5 record. LeBron has been <a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/cleveland-cavaliers/post/_/id/1450/lebron-james-tough-love-for-timofey-mozgov">notably harsh to center Timofey Mozgov</a>; <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/video-lebron-james-walked-off-the-court-2015-11">he marched off the court after a teammate's turnover</a> - while the ball was still in play; he cut down on pregame handshakes to ensure the team is professional and ready to play. LeBron told Jenkins that he's working on controlling his "competitive emotions."</p><p>Cavs GM David Griffin told Jenkins:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Guys like [LeBron]. He's one of them in almost every way. But when he's in the heat of competition, there's no one like him. He is a very intense human being. He's unrelenting. It's not acceptable to blow an assignment. He'll let you know. And then he'll be playing cards with you again on the plane."</p><p>On the court, LeBron doesn't necessarily back the idea that he's taking a more steady approach. Though he has indeed given Kevin Love more responsibility (and Love looks like an All-Star again), James is still pushing 37 minutes per game while averaging 25 points, eight rebounds, and six assists per game. His usage rate is 32.3%, identical to last year and his highest since the 2009-10 season.</p><p>Furthermore, LeBron's approach to games seems to be antithetical to the idea that he'll have to pace himself. As opposed to someone like Curry, who's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/stephen-curry-doesnt-need-fourth-quarters-2015-12">leading the NBA in scoring through three quarters</a>, LeBron is only 12th on the list.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5661f1b484307658008b78a6-800-600/01.png" alt="01" data-mce-source="Cork Gaines/Business Insider"><p class="source"><span>Cork Gaines/Business Insider</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div><p>Conversely, he's first overall in fourth-quarter scoring while playing a team-leading 166 fourth-quarter minutes. For a player who's said he won't need to carry the load so much this year, he's pacing himself through three quarters, then exploding in the fourth, causing him to play heavy minutes. No other player from the 2003 draft class has played more minutes per game than LeBron. Meanwhile, Curry is often spending most or all of fourth quarter sitting on the bench with a big lead.</p><p>Part of LeBron's burden is undoubtedly due to Kyrie Irving being injured. While Irving makes his way back, the Cavs have used Mo Williams and Matthew Dellavedova as playmakers, who both have battled injuries. Neither are on James' level as a playmaker, thus putting that much more pressure on James to close out games. Interestingly, the Cavaliers' net rating this season - their lead margin per 100 possesions is 5.1 - sixth in the NBA, despite having the third-best record. LeBron is helping them close out games, but he doesn't have the luxury of watching fourth quarters like Curry.</p><p>Entering the season, LeBron admitted he wasn't fully recovered from last year's marathon:</p><p><div><blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>LeBron James: I could definitely use a couple more months off.</p>- Jeff Zillgitt  (@JeffZillgitt) <a href="https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/648551884672905216">September 28, 2015</a></blockquote><script async="" src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></div></p><p>Yet he admitted to Jenkins that he's not totally sure how to manage his minutes: "If I'm able to link up with [Greg Popovich] in the afterlife, we can sit down and drink some wine and I can ask him how to pace. The Spurs know how to pace perfection. I haven't figured that out yet."</p><p>Weighing on James perhaps more than ever is the pressure to bring a championship to his hometown, which David Griffin said LeBron is "consumed by."</p><p>Watching James navigate this new stage of his career is a fascinating study into watching the most dominant player in the NBA measure how hard to press the gas pedal.&#xa0;This season, LeBron seems equal parts a player realizing his own mortality for the first time and a player who, in all likelihood, still has the heaviest impact on the championship race. LeBron James is in a new stage of his career, and he seems at odds with it

<p class="drop-cap">Everywhere Devin Featherstone goes, <keyword id="6041552" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="david-goggins">David Goggins</keyword> follows. It starts in the morning when Featherstone opens his eyes and catches Goggins' thousand-yard stare from the book jacket of "Can't Hurt Me," Goggins' memoir, on his nightstand.</p><p>Throughout the day, Featherstone, 36, a firefighter and an avid runner in Calgary, Alberta, ingests YouTube videos and podcast clips of the former <keyword id="640165" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Navy-SEAL">Navy SEAL</keyword> and ultramarathoner, who reminds him to "Stay hard!" And as night falls, and Featherstone crawls back into bed beside his wife, there Goggins remains on the nightstand - inert, gazing blankly into the darkness.</p><p>Featherstone acknowledges the reality plainly: "David Goggins is in my head daily."</p><p>The sway that Goggins, who is 46, has over his followers - his ability to occupy their thoughts and persuade them to push past their limits - is hard to overstate. Last month, he oversaw the Goggins Challenge, a two-day test of physical fitness that ran March 5-7. Across 90 countries, tens of thousands of weekend warriors ran four miles every four hours, for 48 hours straight. If you weren't a runner, you exercised. If you weren't a gym rat, you just got sweaty. It was free to enter, and if you wanted a T-shirt, you paid $35.</p><p>Devin Featherstone did it in full firefighter gear because why not.</p><p>While Goggins ended up donating more than $200,000 in profits from the T-shirt sales to charity, for individual people there is still no good reason to do challenges like these. But Goggins regularly inspires such action. Drawing on stories of his difficult past, mixed with expletive-ridden calls to reject creature comforts, he's found a way to become equal parts drill sergeant, life coach, and superhero for his community of nearly <a href="https://www.instagram.com/davidgoggins/?hl=en">4 million</a> highly engaged Instagram followers.</p><p>"It's just really empowering," said Jenny Petersen, a 48-year-old nurse and runner from Lincoln, Nebraska, speaking of Goggins' list of accomplishments. Petersen - a runner and triathlete - was among those who completed the Goggins Challenge. "People are starting to embrace that it's OK if you suffer, and that you're tougher than you think."</p><p>After more than a year of both mental and physical anguish wrought by COVID-19, Goggins' calls to embrace discomfort may seem ill-timed. But for the newly converted and die-hards alike, he's offering people more than <keyword id="54099" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="motivation">motivation</keyword>: an opportunity to reclaim control of their suffering, and practice it on their own terms.</p><p>Goggins' fan base is growing fast, and there are promising signs his ability to monetize that interest - through a bestselling memoir, corporate speaking engagements, merchandise, and avenues yet-to-be explored - could carve out a lucrative "business of toughness" over the coming years.</p><p>"I discovered a whole nother part of your fucking brain that a lot of people don't even know about," Goggins told Joe Rogan in a <a href="https://open.spotify.com/episode/70ssh8DCCOlwwOEAjLobW3?si=k0g4Ym4hTIulmEA2Tsl7mw">2018 podcast episode</a>. "It's my job now to take these weak people, in the category that I was in, and say, 'Uh-uh. Stop reading the bullshit. Stop listening to the bullshit.' And if my story of success can impact somebody, it is my job, it is my duty, to share the story." (Goggins declined to be interviewed for this article.)</p><h2><strong>Achievements born from adversity</strong></h2><p class="drop-cap">It was November 1, 2005, and a 6-foot-2, 245-pound linebacker of a Navy SEAL was on the starting line of a 24-hour footrace in Southern California. Goggins had signed up for the San Diego 1-Day, an event he entered as a qualifying race for a separate ultramarathon in which he hoped to raise money for charity.</p><p>He was no fleet-footed runner. In the lead-up to the race, Goggins' cardiovascular training included just 20 minutes spent on the elliptical every Sunday. The task ahead of him: Complete 100 laps of the one-mile track before the 24 hours were up.</p><p>The race nearly broke Goggins, who describes the hellacious experience in his book and on podcasts as the most painful day of his life. He broke all the small bones in his feet. His kidneys shut down. By the time he got home, having run 101 miles in under 19 hours, he was smeared with blood, urine, and feces, and was unable to walk under his own weight. His wife at the time begged him to go to the hospital.</p><p>"She kept talking, shouting, crying, trying to reach me through the haze," Goggins wrote in his 2018 memoir, "Can't Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds." "And I heard most of what she said, but I knew if we went to the hospital they'd give me pain killers and I didn't want to mask this pain. I'd just accomplished the most amazing feat in my entire life."</p><div type="image" title="brent gleeson &amp; david goggins" height="825" width="1099" msid="82066484" hostid="261"></div> <div type="image" title="david goggins" height="828" width="1105" msid="82066485" hostid="261"></div> <div type="image" title="David Goggins &amp; Brent Gleeson" height="809" width="1079" msid="82066486" hostid="261"></div><p>As Goggins described it, that race obliterated any sense of physical limits he'd once had.</p><p>Two months after the San Diego 1-Day, he ran the Hurt 100, a 100-mile trail race with 24,500 feet of climbing through hills in Hawaii. In 2006, he completed seven more races of 30 miles or more. In 2007, he completed 14 more, including a third-place finish at the Badwater 135, a race longer than five normal marathons that cuts through the sneaker-melting heat of Death Valley. He's completed two dozen more ultras in the 14 years since.</p><p>Goggins has also competed in the Ironman World Championship, finishing the 140.6-mile triathlon in 11 hours and 24 minutes. And in 2013, he broke the Guinness World Record for most pullups completed in 24 hours with 4,030. He broke the record with seven hours to spare.</p><p>For people such as Petersen and Featherstone, Goggins' core appeal is his mental toughness, which Goggins said he channels into <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/B0jC_nzns2X/">"going the distance,"</a> not winning the race. He speaks often of the "40% rule," which says that when people typically give up, they're really only 40% depleted.</p><p>"The reason it's so powerful," Goggins wrote in "Can't Hurt Me," "is that if you follow it, you will unlock your mind to new levels of performance and excellence in sports and in life, and your rewards will run far deeper than mere material success."</p><p>The San Diego 1-Day marked Goggins' first step on the road to becoming an endurance athlete, but overcoming adversity stretches back to his childhood. Growing up Black in the small, predominantly white town of Brazil, Indiana, he faced virulent racism and struggled with a learning disability, speech impediment, and low self-esteem.</p><p>"I damn sure wasn't going to get into college based on academics," Goggins wrote in "Can't Hurt Me." "All I knew was that I had to get the fuck out of Brazil, Indiana." He saw the military as his best chance and took the requisite entrance exam three times. On his third try, he met the minimum standard for the Air Force.</p><p>To date, Goggins is the only person to complete training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller. And "when that glory faded," about 20 years ago, Goggins set his sights on ultramarathon running, said Brent Gleeson, a former Navy SEAL who graduated from SEAL training with Goggins in 2001.</p><p>"He's always striving, as he would say, to recertify himself as a savage," said Gleeson, who is now an entrepreneur and the author of several books, including "Embrace the Suck: The Navy SEAL Way to an Extraordinary Life." "It's that continual journey, and I think that inadvertently started to spark something in other people."</p><p>Even in middle age, Goggins seems to have no plans of slowing down. In October, at 45 years old, he ran 238 miles in 62 hours, 21 minutes, and 29 seconds as part of the Moab 240 in Utah. It was good enough for a second-place finish.</p><div type="image" title="David Goggins by Brandon Rogers:US Navy" height="1391" width="1855" msid="82066487" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>Not just transformation - multiplication</strong></h2><p>But now the 46-year-old veteran is increasingly turning his attention toward brand-building. In 2016, Goggins, along with his team, founded Goggins LLC as a way to start investing in himself, as he told Rogan on his first of two podcast appearances.</p><p>"I try to be as real as I can," Goggins said, "because we're all fucking suffering in this world. We're all hurting. And I try to take away all titles you wanna give me to let you know that I did not come from that shit. That's why I have to be so authentic and so real about my own insecurities and my own faults, and being a fucked-up person."</p><p>Influencers strive to be as authentic as possible; it can <a href="https://blog.hootsuite.com/authentic-social-media/">make or break</a> a nascent brand. Fortunately for Goggins, who may never even use the word "<keyword id="1864633" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Influencer">influencer</keyword>," staying true to himself and his story has been the greatest source of his success - and sometimes his stress.</p><p>"My biggest fear in life is, people can read right through a motherfucker that's not real," he told Rogan. "I do it all the time. A lot of people have these great quotes, and they mass-produce. I can't mass-produce something, man."</p><p>Instead, he's started giving talks. He's spoken at companies such as Cisco and Microsoft and at pro sports teams such as the Seattle Seahawks and the New York Giants. (Because of COVID-19, he has not given a talk since March 2020, a spokesperson confirmed.) Clips from these talks carry titles such as "Stop Talking Yourself Out of Being Great" and "Get Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable."</p><p>There is ample room for Goggins to grow in these spaces: Together, the <a href="https://blog.marketresearch.com/the-10-billion-self-improvement-market-adjusts-to-new-generation">self-improvement</a> and <a href="https://blog.marketresearch.com/u.s.-motivational-speaking-market-worth-1.9-billion">motivational-speaking</a> markets are worth about $15 billion. And they are expected to grow between 4% and 6% over the next few years, according to research from Marketdata Enterprises.</p><p>In 2018, he and his co-author, Adam Skolnick, self-published his memoir, "Can't Hurt Me." He said in a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/NickJamesExpertEmpires/videos/845740925804974/">2019 Facebook Live event</a> that, despite being offered an advance of $300,000, he turned it down "at the last minute" and decided instead to invest $800,000 of his own money in self-publishing. (Goggins' press representative did not respond to Insider's request to confirm these figures.)</p><p>"It was the best decision, business-wise, I ever made in my entire life," Goggins said in the event, "because I had the mental toughness and also the ability to know what was right for me and my brand."</p><p>The book ended up selling 900,000 copies across print and digital within the first four months, Deadline's Patrick Hipes <a href="https://deadline.com/2019/04/david-goggins-cant-hurt-me-hollywood-agency-wme-1202604800/">reported</a>. It stayed on The New York Times' bestseller list for 14 weeks and has sold more than 3 million copies to date. According to Bookscan data, roughly 300,000 of those copies are from the two bound editions.</p><p>"That's spectacular for any book," said Giles Anderson, the owner and founder of Anderson Literary Agency.</p><p>Still, even as a businessman, Goggins is adamant that money isn't what gets him up in the morning. "I'm not driven by the business," he told Rogan. "I'm a minimalist motherfucker. Gimme a backpack, a fucking ground to sleep on, a pullup bar, some fucking running shoes, and a Subway sandwich, and I'm fucking straight."</p><p>To be sure, Goggins isn't the only tough-as-nails influencer. Plenty have come before him, Tony Robbins perhaps looming the largest, literally, over the past two decades. Nor is Goggins the only veteran turned life coach to break onto the scene in recent years.</p><p>Jocko Willink is a retired naval officer, a podcaster, and the author of several books, including "Extreme Ownership: How Navy SEALs Lead and Win." Willink is well known on Instagram, where he has nearly 2 million followers, for posting gritty, black-and-white close-ups of his digital watch displaying ungodly wake-up times. A recent photo <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CNFOaKlDQ8u/">showed the time</a> as 4:25:41. The caption: "WARPATH."</p><p>Many of Goggins' followers also find strength in Jocko, as he's better known. But where Jocko has posted more than 4,700 times, Goggins has just 335 posts to his name, and each one is a viral sensation in its own right. His videos regularly pull in more than a million views.</p><p>To retired SEAL Gleeson, who previously founded and ran a digital-media agency for 11 years, the growth and engagement Goggins has achieved are nothing short of anomalous. "I've never seen an explosion of rapid growth from a social-media-brand standpoint," Gleeson said. In 2015, the entrepreneur Jesse Itzler published "Living With a SEAL: 31 Days Training With the Toughest Man on the Planet." Itzler never used the SEAL's name in the book, but word soon got out that the "toughest man" was in fact David Goggins. More videos emerged; rumors swirled. <em>Have you heard of David Goggins?</em> The man himself began appearing on podcasts, news shows, and <keyword id="6354632" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="social-media">social media</keyword>.</p><p>All that organic growth has created a reputation that some find intriguing. For instance, a month after the official Goggins Challenge weekend in March, <a href="https://www.runnersworld.com/runners-stories/a36048798/zac-clark-david-goggins-48-hour-challenge/">a handful of New York City-based runners</a> embarked on the challenge to raise money for charity the weekend of April 9. For others, who may be landing on Goggins' Instagram page for the first time, the catalog of running videos, in which our hero yells at the camera for a minute straight, may seem intimidating. But for every Goggins nonbeliever, there is often a friend close by who's ready to dispel the myths and spread the gospel.</p><p>Joelle Tomlinson, a morning-news host in Calgary, and a friend of Featherstone, regularly runs ultramarathons. When she came across Goggins, in 2020, by way of a running partner, she first thought, "Wow, this guy is absolutely wild" - in a good way, she said. "I've never heard of anyone like this. I think he has completely made this recreational suffering more achievable." She said she was eager to pick up a copy of his book.</p><p>But then there are people such as Jacy Cunningham, a 32-year-old professional trainer in Maryland, who admire Goggins for his intensity but find less value in glorifying it as a way of life. "Our society promotes pure extreme," said Cunningham, who runs his own business on a holistic form of fitness called the Jacy Method. "We're fanatic about crazy shit. We're big on pushing ourselves to crazy limits."</p><p>Devin Featherstone said an increasingly comfortable world is to blame. "People are driving more toward that in-your-face attitude of how Goggins tells you straight up: If you're lazy, you're lazy. You're not candy-coating it, and I think more and more people need that."</p><p>Still, even a superfan such as Featherstone said he's motivated most by his family and his values, and that he taps the fearless warrior in his head only when times get tough. As a dad to a 5-year-old son, he knows the misery of a 4 a.m. wake-up. But after studying "Can't Hurt Me" and listening to clip after clip, Featherstone said cleaning a mess or settling a dispute doesn't seem so bad.</p><p>"There are things that I would bitch and complain about that were really small," he said. Now, not so much, and people have even asked where his inner peace comes from. "I'm, like, 'Honestly? I read David Goggins' book.'"</p>

But Atkinson found what he saw during the manhunt unsettling.<p>"I was shocked by the way that the police were approaching the community," Atkinson told Business Insider, as he watched SWAT teams <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2013/04/boston-door-to-door-searches-legal/316042/" target="_blank">searching homes without search warrants</a>. "It was like fear had got the best of us."</p><p>Atkinson's father was a police officer in Oak Park, Michigan (a northern suburb of Detroit) for 29 years and became a member of its SWAT team when it was formed in 1989. His memories as a child are filled with playing the hostage for training drills that his dad's SWAT team conducted, and when he got to his teens, playing an armed assailant.</p><p>With a unique eye to the evolution of SWAT over his life, the Boston Marathon bombing was a disturbing reality for Atkinson in the militarization of the police in the US.</p><p>"It was such a departure from the way that I felt my dad's SWAT team approached the community," he said.</p><p>So Atkinson decided to investigate it in his directorial feature debut "Do Not Resist."</p><p>Atkinson teamed with producer Laura Hartrick to make a gripping documentary (which won the best documentary grand jury award at this year's Tribeca Film Festival) that examines how <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword> enforcement across the country are using government grants to beef up their departments with military equipment to fight terrorism. He visited a SWAT competition in Florida, got a ride along on a new&#xa0;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MRAP" target="_blank">MRAP</a> (Mine-Resistance Ambush Protected vehicles that withstand IEDs) that the police department of Juneau County, Wisconsin - murders in 2014, zero - just received, and sat in on a city council meeting in Concord, New Hampshire for the approval of a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenco_BearCat" target="_blank">BearCat</a> (Ballistic Engineered Armored Response Counter Attack Truck) for its police department - murders since 2004, two.<p>But then the movie completely changed when 18-year-old Mike Brown was fatally shot by police in Ferguson, Missouri in August 2014.</p><p>"Before Ferguson, we had 80 hours of footage to educate people," said Atkinson. "That was no longer needed because the Ferguson story showed it."</p><p>Atkinson and Hartrick raced to Ferguson and captured incredible footage of the protests that occurred there following the death of Brown (Atkinson is known best for his cinematography work on films by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady like "Detropia" and "Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You," which he had an additional cinematographer/camera operator credit). With officers in riot gear, some shooting tear gas from atop BearCats, the actions by Ferguson police towards the protestors seen in the movie is more infuriating than what the cable news coverage showed.</p><p>"Most news outlets there had to go file stories at 10 or 11 o'clock at night," said Atkinson. "But we had the luxury to just wait it out until the end and there were a lot of exchanges between the police and the community in those hours when no one was looking that changes the entire dynamic of what was being reported."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57ed58a3077dcc39128b8dc3-1257/vanish_dnr_handsup.png" alt="VANISH_DNR_handsup" data-mce-source="Vanish Films"><p class="source"><span>Vanish Films</span></p><p class="caption">Ferguson footage from "Do Not Resist."</p></img></div><p></p></div></div>Atkinson shows SWAT teams following crowds back into their neighborhoods and deploying tear gas after the city-imposed curfew. Also, officers in standoffs with citizens while they are just standing on their front lawns.<p>But with his general knowledge of SWAT procedure, Atkinson also observed the lack of training by the Ferguson police.</p><p>"They would shoot the tear gas towards the crowds but also on the sides of them, so they had nowhere to go but towards the police," said Atkinson.</p><p>In the haze of tear gas, Atkinson captured on film one female protestor saying to anyone who will listen: "They need to stop giving these boys these toys because they don't know how to handle them."<br><br>"Do Not Resist" also explores the future of policing, talking to people behind aerial surveillance and face recognition, both of which are currently being used in some police departments in the country. Then there's the work of Richard Berk, a professor who is developing an algorithm that seems out of "Minority Report" as it predicts at a person's birth if they will become a criminal.</br></br></p><p>But the section of the movie that will stay with most long after watching are the words of the top trainer of military law enforcement in the country, Dave Grossman.</p><p>Atkinson was allowed to film Grossman's class, which was full of SWAT commanders from across the country, and what is revealed is a chilling presentation where Grossman tells the men such things as "we are at war and you're the frontline troops in this war," and "the best sex you've had in your life" is when you come back home alive from the job.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57ed5be2077dcc3d018b9044-2400/craigatkinson_headshot.png" alt="CraigAtkinson_Headshot" data-mce-source="Tiffany Frances"><p class="source"><span>Tiffany Frances</span></p><p class="caption">Craig Atkinson.</p></img></div><p></p></div></div>"I just wanted to show the American people who their officers are being trained by," said Atkinson, "and I want Dave Grossman to have to explain himself to why this is the most effective way to police our streets in this era. I think we have outgrown that philosophy and we need to evolve it to accommodate what our society is actually asking us. Let's go back to a protect and serve model."<p>Business Insider reached out to Grossman, and though he said he has not seen the movie, he has seen the trailer which he's in, and he believes it is "horrendously irresponsible."</p><p>"It's got a quote of me saying, 'We are at war and you're the frontline troops in this war,' but in the context of Ferguson. That was the context they created," said Grossman. "I was talking about this land and 9/11 attacks and what's coming down the road as far as terrorist attacks. In time of war, law enforcement is essentially troops on American soil. I think that there's 9/11-scale attacks coming. What they may do is attack schools, day cares, and school buses, and what I was telling my cops is when that happens there is no elite delta force that's going to show up to save your kids, you're it."</p><p>When asked if he's worried that his teachings might get misconstrued and SWAT members may bring his thinking to events like Ferguson or the protests in Charlotte instead of a terrorist act, Grossman said "I don't teach tactical, I teach the mental side of the game."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57ed599db0ef9748258b7b7d-1180/do%20not%20resist%20dave%20grossman%20youtube%20vanish%20films%20final.jpg" alt="Do Not Resist Dave Grossman YouTube Vanish Films final" data-mce-source="YouTube/Vanish Films"><p class="source"><span>YouTube/Vanish Films</span></p><p class="caption">Dave Grossman.</p></img></div><p></p></div></div>Grossman also dislikes the term "militarization of police." He says that things like MRAPs and BearCats are "tools that [police] are using to stay alive."<p>"My presentation is always evolving, always talking about the latest science, the latest physiology, the latest case studies" said Grossman. "It is truly the most successful military law enforcement training. Are all of these police chiefs that come to my training, are they all insane? These [filmmakers] set out to do something horrendously irresponsible, it's part of the whole war on cops left-wing mantra, and it is enormously harmful to business."</p><p>In a response to the above remarks by Grossman, Atkinson sent an email stating: "The righteous violence that Dave Grossman instructs officers to deploy may be effective when fighting ISIS, but while the police are preparing for the next 9/11 attack, they are engaged in 63 million police-citizen interactions a year," he wrote.&#xa0;"It is irresponsible to think that you can teach the 'mental side of the game' while not considering the broad application in which this mentality is deployed.&#xa0;I think it's important to note that Jeronimo Yanez, the officer who reflexively <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jeronimo-yanez-named-as-officer-who-shot-philando-castile-2016-7">shot and killed Philando Castile</a> as he reached for his wallet during a routine traffic stop, had <a href="http://www.twincities.com/2016/07/14/fiery-debate-over-warrior-training-for-officer-in-philando-castile-shooting/" target="_blank">previously undergone Grossman's Bulletproof Warrior training</a>."&#xa0;</p><p>Atkinson also notes that Sheriff Laurie Smith of Santa Clara cancelled a Grossman training session due to concerns that the <a href="http://www.eastbayexpress.com/SevenDays/archives/2016/07/29/controversial-bulletproof-police-firearms-training-canceled-by-santa-clara-sheriff" target="_blank">class makes officers more likely to use deadly force</a> when it's not necessary.&#xa0;</p><p><em>"Do Not Resist" opens at New York theater The Film Forum on Friday and will be available for streaming later in the year.
