New Delhi, India's <keyword id="35090" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exports" source="Orion">exports</keyword> contracted by 12.7 per cent, third month in a row, to USD 34.66 billion in April even as the <keyword id="113688" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trade-deficit" source="Orion">trade deficit</keyword> reduced to a 20-month low of USD 15.24 billion, the government data showed on Monday. The decline in exports is mainly on account of poor demand in India's key destinations -- the Europe and the US -- and it may take some more months for the situation to improve. The demand scenario is "not looking very good as far as Europe is concerned, and the US also we have seen a decline in demand. For the next 2-3 months, I think the demand scenario does not look very optimistic," DGFT (Director General of Foreign Trade) Santosh Kumar Sarangi told reporters here. However, he expressed hope that things would change from September onwards. "There is a possibility that opening up of Chinese economy combined with some boost in demand in the Europe and the US economy from August-September onwards might give a boost to global exports," he said. Imports too declined by about 14 per cent, fifth month in a row, to USD 49.9 billion as against USD 58.06 billion recorded in the same month last year, the data showed. Trade deficit in April last year stood at USD 18.36 billion. The previous lowest level was recorded in August 2021, when the deficit stood at USD 13.81 billion. On imports, Sarangi said that the decline is because of cooling down of commodity prices and reduced demand for products which are considered as discretionary like gems and jewellery. He suggested to diversify into products which have higher export demand, such as electronic goods, oil meals, oil seeds, and agricultural goods. He added that export sectors which may get impacted in the coming months include gems and jewellery, apparel and garments, and some engineering products. In April, export sectors which recorded negative growth included petroleum products, gems and jewellery, engineering goods, chemicals and ready-made garments of all textiles. However, electronic goods, pharma, rice and oil meals registered positive growth. The shipments of electronic goods increased by 26.49 per cent to USD 2.11 billion in the month under review. Under merchandise exports, only 11 of the 30 key sectors exhibited positive growth in April and at imports front, 23 out of 30 key sectors recorded negative growth. Crude oil imports dipped by 13.95 per cent to USD 15.17 billion. Gold imports too contracted by 41.48 per cent to USD 1 billion in April. India's exports to the US in April declined by 17.16 per cent to USD 5.9 billion. Similarly to the UAE it dipped by 22 per cent to USD 2.23 billion in April. The other key export destinations where exports reported negative growth included China, Singapore, Bangladesh, and Germany. Further, the commerce ministry has revised upwards the overall trade figures for 2022-23. According to the ministry's data, exports of goods and services in 2022-23 rose by 14.68 per cent to USD 775.87 billion (earlier it was USD 770 billion) as against USD 676.53 billion in 2021-22. Imports increased by 17.65 per cent to USD 894.19 billion, leaving a trade deficit of USD 118.31 billion in 2022-23. Merchandise exports increased by 6.74 per cent to USD 450.43 billion, while imports rose by 16.47 per cent to USD 714 billion in the last fiscal. Services exports rose 27.86 per cent to USD 325.44 billion, while imports increased by 22.54 per cent to USD 180 billion in the last fiscal. Services exports in April this year were estimated at USD 30.36 billion, as compared to USD 24.05 billion in April 2022. The estimated value of services import in April was USD 16.50 billion as compared to USD 14.06 billion in April 2022.

Those ingredients are shipped to places where the drug is created for illegal consumption in the US, per the DEA.But few details were announced on Wednesday, and the deal is more of a positive sign in diplomacy and less of a concrete hope that Americans can start seeing fentanyl vanish from city streets, experts on US-China relations told Business Insider."If success is defined by the disappearance of illicit fentanyl and related opioids in US society, then quite probably, any such deal with any country is likely to be judged as ineffective," said Zha Daojiong, a professor of international political economy at Peking University.<h2>China's role in a massive fentanyl problem</h2>Biden and Xi both face a behemoth challenge: a highly lucrative international drug trade that often teeters on the edge of what's legal and illegal.Many of the precursors to fentanyl, originally created as a painkiller, are legal to produce and export in China, and it remains to be seen how Beijing will crack down on the local pharma market.It's an industry too vast and fragmented for Chinese authorities to easily identify and control chemicals that can be turned into fentanyl, said Liu Zongyuan, the Maurice R. Greenberg fellow for China studies at the Council of Foreign Relations.Even if Beijing were to impose the right limits on the right parties, cartels can start looking elsewhere for materials, Liu said.India, for example, has been designated <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dea.gov/sites/default/files/2020-03/DEA_GOV_DIR-008-20%20Fentanyl%20Flow%20in%20the%20United%20States_0.pdf">by the DEA</a> as a growing source of fentanyl precursors, with at least one documented case of an Indian national working with a cartel to produce fentanyl."Fentanyl is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dea.gov/sites/default/files/2020-06/Fentanyl-2020_0.pdf">50 times stronger than heroin</a> and makes 20 times the profit of heroin," Liu said. "Low cost, high profit. There are just way too many profiting incentives for people to engage in these illicit activities."Robert Ross, a professor of political science at Boston College, said the Biden-Xi agreement in its current form will have a "marginal at best effect" on fentanyl in the US."Focusing on China as the source of the problem has been because it's such an easy country to criticize," Ross said. "In reality, China is only one player in the fentanyl problem.""The US has to solve its social problems," Ross added. "If demand in America is there, there will be an international fentanyl supply, whether it's from Mexico, whether it's from China."<h2>So why bother?</h2>The deal at least signals an area on which Beijing and Washington can shake hands."The fact that Biden and Xi put their names, time, and effort behind the cause is a welcome head start," said Eric Richardson, a law lecturer at UC Berkeley and the founder of consultancy INHR, which trains diplomats to work in the United Nations.For China, the fentanyl agreement — alongside other deals struck on Wednesday, like the reopening of a military hotline — gives the impression that Beijing is open to playing ball, Ross said."They are trying to signal to Europe and other countries that they are willing to cooperate," Ross said.For the Biden administration, the fentanyl deal has been an issue repeatedly pushed by US officials, Liu said."This is something that's been critical for President Biden in the coming election," Liu said. This segment did not exist before 2006,” said Tanna. China Plus One is the business strategy to avoid investing only in China and diversify business into other countries. Tatva Chintan Pharma Chem receives 70% of the revenue from exports to over 25 countries including the USA, China, Germany, Japan, South Africa, and the UK, whereas the rest 30% comes from domestic markets. Having seen a good export trend in the first three quarters and price stabilisation in the United States, it was estimated that FY 2020 exports would reach USD 22-billion mark. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted exports to a certain extent and brought down the estimated exports to USD 20.58 billion with an overall growth of 7.57 per cent instead of double-digit growth, the release said. Drug formulations and biologicals, contributing to almost 72 per cent of exports, have shown 9.5 per cent growth in FY 2020. However, export of bulk drugs and drug intermediates,the second largest category, has negatively grown (-0.73%),bringing down the overall performance. "The overall exports to North America have recorded 15.11 per cent growth. About USD 6.7 billion worth of pharmaceuticals were exported to the USA with 15.8 per cent growth. This has constituted almost 32.74 per cent of our total exports, it said. India being dependent on China to an extent of 60-70 percent of its needs of bulk drugs has suffered disruption in the supply chain with the outbreak of COVID-19. "Our import of bulk drugs went down significantly in February. Combined with lock down measures across the countries and export restrictions on some of the products have all contributed to the situation of downturn in export growth," the release said. The Central government has taken a decision to develop three mega bulk drug parks in partnership with states. The Centre would give Rs 1,000-crore grants-in-aid to states for each bulk drug park. In an interview with Business Insider ahead of the IPO, Mahesh Tanna, chief financial officer (CFO) at Tatva Chintan Pharma Chem highlighted that pharmaceutical and agrochemical intermediates and other specialty chemicals (PASC) segment is getting almost 30% of revenues from countries that have been looking for alternatives other than Chinese products. The PASC category includes specialty chemicals which are used as intermediates, disinfectants, catalysts and solvents. Many countries have started following China Plus One policy, which is the business strategy to avoid investing only in China and diversify business into other countries. “India’s specialty chemical companies are gaining favour with global multinationals because of the geopolitical shift after the outbreak of covid-19 as the world looks to reduce dependence on China. Currently, China accounts for approximately 15-17% of the world’s exportable specialty chemicals, whereas India accounts for just 1-2%, indicating that the country has a large scope of improvement and widespread opportunity. It is anticipated that specialty chemicals will be the next great export pillar for India,” said Sharekhan in a report. The overall global specialty chemical market stood at approximately $800 billion in 2019, and is expected to grow by 5-6% in the next five years, added the report. Analysts at Reliance Securities believe the company has a robust earnings growth potential in the long-run led by strong market share, capacity expansion and long-standing relationship with the key customers. “Moreover, the high valuations of the company’s issue price are justified given the high growth potential, dominant player, exposure to green energy, and strong balance sheet,” said a research report by Ventura Securities. Analysts suggest subscribing to this pharma company IPO on discounted valuation and strong product portfolio than peers

Hyderabad, Amid the gloom caused by COVID-19, one sector which provided a ray of hope was life sciences and turning the challenge into an opportunity, Hyderabad fortified its position as a global force in the world of pharmaceuticals. This southern city, already recognised as a global information technology destination, proved its prowess in the field of pharmaceuticals and biotechnology and emerged as the vaccine capital of the world. Already known as the bulk drug capital of India, Hyderabad witnessed manufacturing of lifesaving COVID-19 drugs like Remdesivir, Hydroxychloroquine and Favipiravir by some of the top pharma companies based here. This was followed by hectic efforts in the city to develop COVID-19 vaccine. In fact, Hyderabad has emerged as the nerve centre of all research and development activities in the country for COVID-19 vaccines and has even attracted international attention. Today, almost all the vaccines being developed in the country for the pandemic have a Hyderabad connect. Four of the six companies developing COVID vaccines in India are based in Hyderabad. <keyword id="149108" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Biotech">Bharat Biotech</keyword> is currently conducting Phase III clinical trials of India's first indigenous COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin. Covaxin is being developed in collaboration with <keyword id="1256547" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Indian-Council-of-Medical-Research">the Indian Council of Medical Research</keyword> (ICMR) - National Institute of Virology (NIV). This indigenous, inactivated vaccine is being developed and manufactured in Bharat Biotech's BSL-3 (Bio-Safety Level 3) bio-containment facility at Genome Valley here. According to Bharat Biotech, Covaxin has been evaluated in approximately 1,000 subjects in Phase I and Phase II clinical trials, with promising safety and immunogenicity results. The Phase III human clinical trials of the vaccine began in November, involving 26,000 volunteers across India. This is India's first and only Phase III efficacy study for a COVID-19 vaccine, and the largest phase III efficacy trial ever conducted for any vaccine in India. "Covaxin has garnered interest from several countries worldwide for supplies and introduction," said Suchitra Ella, Joint Managing Director of Bharat Biotech. In April, Bharat Biotech announced development of CoroFlu, an intranasal vaccine for <keyword id="8698690" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus-">Coronavirus.</keyword> University of Wisconsin–Madison and vaccine company FluGen along with Bharat Biotech began the development and testing of CoroFlu. The Hyderabad based company will produce almost 300 million doses of vaccine for global distribution. In May, Bharat Biotech and Thomas Jefferson University of Philadelphia signed an exclusive deal to develop a new vaccine candidate for COVID-19 invented at Jefferson. The novel vaccine was developed using an existing deactivated rabies vaccine as a vehicle for coronavirus proteins. Bharat Biotech claimed to have excellent track record of innovation with more than 140 global patents, a wide product portfolio of more than 16 vaccines, 4 bio-therapeutics, registrations in more than 116 countries and WHO Pre-qualifications. The company has so far developed vaccines for H1N1, Rotavirus, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies, Chikungunya, Zika and the world's first conjugated vaccine for Typhoid. It has delivered more than four billion doses of vaccines worldwide. It is also the largest Rabies vaccine manufacturer in the world. Another city-based firm Biological E last month initiated clinical trial of its COVID-19 subunit vaccine candidate in India following approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI). BE is making the vaccine in collaboration with <keyword id="5289395" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="dynavax-technologies-corporation">Dynavax Technologies Corporation</keyword> (Dynavax), a US-based vaccine focused biopharmaceutical company, and <keyword id="503459" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Baylor-College-of-Medicine">Baylor College of Medicine</keyword>, a health sciences university in Houston. Biological E has also signed an agreement with Johnson &amp; Johnson to produce the latter's vaccine at its vaccine production facilities and sell them both in India and export across various global markets. Indian Immunologicals, a human and animal vaccines maker, too is developing a vaccine for COVID. Hyderabad-based pahrma major Dr Reddy's Laboratories is conducting clinical trials of Russian COVID-19 vaccine, Sputnik V. Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), Russia's sovereign wealth fund, has collaborated with Dr Reddy's to conduct clinical trials and distribute the vaccine in India. Hyderabad was under spotlight with the recent visits by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ambassadors of more than 60 countries to the facilities of Bharat Biotech and Biological E in Genome Valley Telangana's industry minister K. T. Rama Rao believes that Hyderabad has cemented its position as the vaccine capital of the world. He pointed out that Hyderabad is already manufacturing more than two billion doses of vaccines every year, which is one-third of the global vaccine output. The city, with its strong ecosystem, has played a critical role in making India not only self-sufficient in the medicine manufacture but also turned it into the pharmacy capital of the world. It accounts for 40 per cent of the total Indian bulk drugs and 50 per cent of the bulk drug exports. Industry leaders believe that Hyderabad will be an integral part of the global efforts to vaccinate the world against COVID. Even if no vaccine is developed in the city, the city will still have a big role to play in global vaccination efforts with the sheer vaccine manufacturing capacity it houses. Hyderabad has the largest US FDA approved vaccine facilities. They have the capacity to manufacture millions of doses with world-class standards. "India's vaccine sector will play a critical role in developing and producing vaccine at scale for distribution across the world. Hyderabad's importance in the global vaccine landscape is only growing," K.T. Rama Rao said. Telangana government has assured the companies that it will play the enabling role in global vaccination efforts against COVID-19. The Hyderabad airport announced few days ago that has developed necessary infrastructure to handle the exports. As per the industry insights, most of India's vaccine export will be to Africa, Latin America and Asian destinations. Hyderabad is already home to more than 800 life sciences companies and the sector employs over 1,20,000 pharmaceutical professionals. It is said to be the only city in the country to house more than 20 incubation centres focused only on life sciences and health-tech. More than 200 start-ups are also working on innovative solutions in healthcare.
