<ul class="summary-list"><li>China's COMAC is rebranding its regional jet to the C909, keeping with the naming style of its newer C919.</li><li>That might not get COMAC more C909 sales, but it markets the plane under a unified family name.</li></ul>Chinese planemaker COMAC on Tuesday rebranded its regional jet to fit a unified naming style among all of its aircraft, playing into its ambition to eventually earn a share in the international market.The up-and-coming manufacturer turned heads last year when it launched its first homegrown airliner, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/comac-c919-chinese-commercial-jet-built-rival-boeing-and-airbus-2022-2">medium-range C919</a>, which is meant to compete with the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320.Now, the state-owned COMAC said its smaller <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/old-friend-new-look-chinas-comac-renames-regional-jet-c909-marketing-push-2024-11-12/">ARJ21 will be dubbed the C909</a>, in keeping with the C919's nomenclature.The C909 is older than its bigger cousin, with development starting in 2002 and its first commercial flight taking off in June 2016. Its previous name, the ARJ21, stood for Advanced Regional Jet for the 21st Century.<div type="image" title="A Chinese airline staff stands inside a C909, formerly known as the ARJ21." height="3378" width="5397" msid="115247209" hostid="261" sizebytes="1120168"></div>As a regional plane, it's technically fit for flights up to four or five hours — think trips like New York City to Miami.Still, the Boeing and Airbus duopoly should have little to fear from the Chinese plane. Offering about 70 to 90 seats, the C909 is often compared to the Boeing 717, which was marketed to airlines in the 1990s.<h2 id="cfc0c2c2-79a5-4f1f-98b7-ec49ac166432">How the C909 fits into COMAC's plans</h2>But its rebrand displays COMAC's intention to go international as a whole, David Yu, an assistant professor who teaches finance at New York University Shanghai, told Business Insider."If you look at market norms, really no other player has done this in terms of rebranding their aircraft. Unless it's in an M&amp;A play," said Yu, who also runs the advisory firm Asia Aviation Valuation Advisors.COMAC is expected to soon debut another plane in the C-series, the C929, a larger 290-passenger aircraft. The Chinese firm is also working on an even bigger plane, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.scmp.com/economy/china-economy/article/3262476/china-begins-work-new-c939-widebody-jet-going-bigger-and-bolder-after-c919s-success">C939</a>, a wide-body jet with 390 seats.Yu said renaming to the C909 allows the Chinese planemaker to market a full range of aircraft variants under one name — just like how Airbus and Boeing sell their planes.Boeing, for example, provides a range of seat capacities from 138 to 204 passengers through the 737 Max 7, 8, 9, and 10.That doesn't change the plane's technical capabilities, but it streamlines the company's offerings into one family."If you think about it from a holistic perspective, they want the smallest aircraft and the biggest aircraft, and every single segment in between to be competitive," Yu said of COMAC.<h2 id="d3276065-bc04-4348-9885-f6c2ecc6c357">A new name doesn't mean more sales for the C909</h2>During its Tuesday announcement at the Zhuhai Air Show, COMAC said the C909 would be lighter, more resistant, and less noisy than the ARJ21.That said, Brendan Sobie, a Singapore-based aviation consultant, said the new name may not help COMAC sell the C909 internationally.For one, the plane's aged tech puts it at a disadvantage, he told BI."Anytime you have a new aircraft, it's about when the plane was initially developed. Over the last year, Boeing has also faced a reckoning over <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-737-safety-mess-just-got-worse-2024-10#:~:text=The%20National%20Transportation%20Safety%20Board,been%20plagued%20by%20safety%20probes.">the safety of its 737s</a> after a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alaska-boeing-737-max-9-door-blowout-company-response-earnings-2024-1">door plug</a> blew out of one of its planes mid-flight."There is some kind of appetite for another player in the market, but COMAC has to overcome a lot of challenges," Sobie said.For example, neither the C919 nor the C909 are certified by American or European aviation authorities, though COMAC has been <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/old-friend-new-look-chinas-comac-renames-regional-jet-c909-marketing-push-2024-11-12/">pushing hard for the C919's approval.</a>"You haven't seen a big, flagship, independently managed airline commit yet to these aircraft because they do have to be certified," Sobie said.Where the manufacturer and its C909 could pose a greater threat to Boeing and Airbus is China. Domestic airlines there operate more than 4,300 Boeing planes and 1,700 Airbus aircraft, and China has already approved COMAC's planes for commercial use.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202411/1322907.shtml">Chinese media</a> lauded the C909 rebrand on Tuesday, reporting that local airlines had ordered 70 of the renamed aircraft.Yu said that if COMAC can make the C919 and C909 economically attractive to airlines, it stands a chance of grabbing market share both at home and abroad."Yes, it might be older tech," Yu said. "But I think, ultimately, the question is whether the airline can make money off of it. That's the main thing."An Airbus spokesperson told BI that COMAC's developments would "not stop us from being present in the markets where we have significant customer demand," including China."We have always indicated that we saw upcoming competition from COMAC, and it is now a reality, starting with the Chinese market," he said.Boeing did not respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business by Business Insider.

Till now, the validity of Commercial Pilot License (CPL) was for five years and after completion of that period, it had to be renewed. The civil aviation ministry amended the Aircraft Rules, 1937. Among various changes made, the validity of licenses in relation to Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) and CPL holders has been increased from five years to ten years. "This change is expected to reduce administrative burden on pilots and aviation authorities like DGCA, promoting a more streamlined and efficient licensing process," the ministry said in a statement on Monday. Besides, rules have been amended to address concerns related to the display of lights in the vicinity of an aerodrome. It has also been clarified that the term 'light' encompasses lantern lights, wish kites, and laser lights. Also, the government's jurisdiction over those exhibiting such lights has been extended from 5 kilometres to 5 nautical miles around an aerodrome. "It is made explicit that the government possesses the authority to take action against individuals displaying lights that disrupt the safe operation of aircraft or pose hazards to the operating crew. "Should such lights remain unattended for 24 hours, the government is empowered to enter the location and extinguish them," the ministry said. Simultaneously, the matter should be reported to the relevant police station for legal action under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). When the source of the observed light is unidentifiable or if it shifts locations, the airport or airline operator is obligated to promptly report the incident to the local police station, initiating potential criminal proceedings. Another amendment is that the requirement for validation of foreign licenses has been removed. "This change signifies aligning the regulations with the evolving needs of the aviation sector," the ministry said. Further, the requirements related to continued competence for <keyword id="6414849" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="air-traffic-controller" source="Orion">Air Traffic Controller</keyword> (ATC) license holders have been liberalised. According to the ministry, this change offers increased flexibility to accommodate situations with limited movements or watch hours. ATC license holders must complete a minimum of ten hours of simulated exercises, including emergencies. Subsequently, they must undergo a skill assessment for their respective rating within ten consecutive days of commencing these exercises, it said. The ministry said the amendments to the Aircraft Rules, 1937, notified on October 10, mark a crucial shift in promoting ease of doing business and ensuring safety and security within the aviation sector. India is one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world. Airlines are expanding their aircraft fleet and will be hiring more pilots to cater to rising air traffic demand.

Kellen Xie, the vice president of Chinese eVTOL company <keyword id="21403174" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="autoflight-group" source="Orion">AutoFlight Group</keyword>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ft.com/content/c181d6ab-e560-427c-9254-9cadb62889b5">told the Financial Times</a> that the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has been "quite supportive" of the growing industry. Xie told FT that CAAC regulators "work longer hours" and "are determined to actually speed up the process of bringing this new technology into reality." AutoFlight is still awaiting regulatory approval in Europe, according to FT. In the US, several smaller eVTOLS have already received the green light.
