Snow likely in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh in next two days

<keyword id="41568" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Srinagar">Srinagar</keyword>, Kashmir was cut off from rest of the country on Monday as the arterial <keyword id="720343" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-Srinagar">Jammu-Srinagar</keyword> national highway and Mughal road were closed due to snowfall across the valley, leaving nearly 4500 vehicles stranded. "The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is closed due to accumulation of snow at many places, especially around <keyword id="924005" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jawahar-tunnel">Jawahar Tunnel</keyword>," an official of the traffic control department said. He said snow clearance operations were in full swing and efforts were on to restore movement of stranded vehicles along the 260 kilometre road. The official said nearly 4500 vehicles, mostly trucks carrying essentials to the valley, are stranded along the highway at various places. Mughal Road, which connects the valley to <keyword id="6357972" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="jammu">Jammu</keyword> division through Shopian-Rajouri axis, has been closed for several days due to heavy snowfall in the region. The officials said south Kashmir's Kulgam district received highest snowfall with two to three feet of snow accumulated at some places. Anantnag district has also received heavy snowfall between one foot and two feet, they said. The flight operations to and from Srinagar remained suspended for second consecutive day due to poor visibility, the officials said. The <keyword id="6437100" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="minimum-temperature">minimum temperature</keyword> improved in most places in the valley due to the snowfall but still stayed below the freezing point, the officials said. Srinagar city -- the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir -- recorded a low of minus 0.9 degrees Celsius -- up from the previous night's minus 1.5 degrees Celsius, they said. The minimum temperature in Gulmarg tourist resort remained unchanged at minus 5 degrees Celsius on Sunday night compared to a night earlier. Pahalgam tourist resort, which also serves as a base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 6.7 degrees Celsius - plunging from minus 1.45 degrees Celsius on the previous night, the officials said. Qazigund recorded a minimum of minus 0.3 degrees Celsius, Kupwara, in the north, minus 0.3 degrees Celsius and Kokernag, minus 1.4 degrees Celsius. The MET Office said moderate to heavy snowfall, with isolated very heavy snowfall, was most likely to take place, especially in south Kashmir, Gulmarg, Banihal-Ramban, Poonch, Rajouri, Kistawar and Zanskar, Drass as well as on the higher reaches of Ladakh UT, over two days from Monday. "Overall, the snowfall will continue from Sunday to Tuesday forenoon with the occasional break. This may lead to the disruption of surface and air transportation, water-logging in plains of Jammu and Srinagar cities," the MET Office said. Kashmir is currently under the grip of 'Chillai-Kalan' -- the 40-day harshest winter period when a cold wave grips the region and the temperature drops considerably leading to the freezing of water bodies including the famous Dal Lake here as well as the water supply lines in several parts of the valley. The chances of snowfall are the most frequent and maximum during this period and most areas, especially in the higher reaches, receive heavy snowfall. While 'Chillai-Kalan' - which began on December 21 -- will end on January 31, the cold wave continues even after that in Kashmir with a 20-day-long 'Chillai-Khurd' (small cold) and a 10-day-long 'Chillai-Bachha' (baby cold). Jammu-Srinagar national highway and Mughal road closed due to snowfall

Officials of the meteorological department said the <keyword id="6437100" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="minimum-temperature">minimum temperature</keyword> dropped to minus 8.8 in Srinagar. "From today onwards there is going to be perceptible improvement in the night temperatures in both <keyword id="6360420" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="JK">J&amp;K</keyword> and Ladakh," the officials said adding that the maximum temperature was 2 degrees Celsius in Srinagar on Saturday which is also the lowest maximum recorded this season. Sonam Lotus, director of the MeT department for J&amp;K and Ladakh told IANS that minus 8.8 is the lowest minimum temperature recorded after exactly 30 years in Srinagar. "In 1991 the minimum temperature recorded was minus 11.8 in Srinagar," Lotus said. The 40-day long period of harsh winter cold known locally as the 'Chillai Kalan' ends on Sunday, but not without leaving an indelible mark in the record book for ushering in one of Kashmir's coldest winters in living memory. The minimum temperature was minus 12.0 in Pahalgam and minus 8.0 in Gulmarg. Leh town of Ladakh had minus 16.6, Kargil minus 17.4 and Drass minus 26.2 as the night's lowest temperature. At minus 6.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday, Srinagar recorded the coldest night of the season so far, while the temperature in Ladakh's <keyword id="6522554" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="drass-town">Drass town</keyword> to minus 29. "Srinagar recorded minus 6.6 as the <keyword id="10459092" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="minimum-temperature-today">minimum temperature today</keyword> which is the coldest recorded so far this season. This record was surpassed during the last 10 years on December 25, 2018 when the minimum had dropped to minus 7.7 in Srinagar," an official of the MET Department said. "Drass town recorded minus 29 as the minimum temperature which is the lowest recorded today in Jammu and <keyword id="6354495" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kashmir">Kashmir</keyword> and Ladakh," the official added. <keyword id="108228" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gulmarg">Gulmarg</keyword> recorded minus 9.2 and Pahalgam minus 9.5 as the night's lowest temperatures. Leh town recorded minus 18.3 and Kargil minus 21.1 as the minimum temperatures. Jammu city recorded 3.3, Katra 4.9, Batote 2.5, Bannihal 3.2 and Bhaderwah minus 3.0 as the minimum temperatures. Water taps in Srinagar city and other towns of <keyword id="10425442" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-kashmir-division">the Kashmir Division</keyword> were frozen on Saturday morning and locals were seen lighting small fires around to de-freeze them. The thick blanket of fog over the low lying areas disrupted air and surface traffic in Jammu city, where the temperature was 9.5 degrees Celsius. Minimum temperatures throughout the valley and Ladakh dropped notches below the freezing point.
