As Chennai floods saw claims of over Rs 1500 crore, the motor insurance companies are treading the path carefully and have decided to make premium 15% higher. 
 
"We will have to build in the factor of flood for all big cities that are developing fast and premium should go up by 10%-15%. Simple clogging due to rain water can enter basement parking and result in claims,” Vijay Kumar, head of motor insurance Bajaj Allianz General Insurance, told ET. 
 
The Rs 1500-crore claim during Chennai floods was more than that of 2006 Mumbai floods claim. Experts say that higher claims in metros act like a whip, thereby increasing the premium.

<keyword id="12864" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Chennai">Chennai</keyword> is experiencing its heaviest rains in over 100 years which not only brought the city to a standstill but have also claimed more than 200 lives. 
 
Waterlogged streets, shut power grids, a submerged airport, flooded houses, no transport, food or electricity have become a way of life for the people residing in Chennai, some of whom have also faced the fury of these unprecedented rains when they were left stranded sans transport or any help. 
 
Even as the MeT department predicted that the incessant rains are to last for four more days, the residents of the city are of the belief that Chennai will pull through as it always had. 
 
None of this however was enough for the national media to consider the floods as an important topic to be highlighted in its various mediums- be it newspapers or TV channels. Chennai barely found a mention in either of these places and the people of the city were ultimately left to fend for themselves. 
 
Chennai’s iconic newspaper The Hindu also became a victim to the vagaries of the rains when the paper was not printed for the first time in 137 years. 
 
According to the publisher, N. Murali, the employees were unable to make it to the printing press which is located 30 kms away from the city. 
At such a time of crisis, social media turned out to be the biggest saviours, which people from all over the country and the city co-operating to help out each other in whatever way they could. 
 
Actor Siddharth, best known for his role in Rang De Basanti have been one of the few people who were very active on Twitter highlighting helpline numbers, the grim situation due to the rains and arranging for food and rescue. 
 
Superstar Rajnikanth and his son-in law Dhanush weren’t far behind, either donating Rs 10 lakh and Rs 5 lakh respectively towards the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund.

However, the city’s trying hard to attempt a comeback. A crowd-sourced effort has built a digital map that shows flooded streets, vulnerable and inundated areas and most importantly the way to the nearest relief camps. The map currently shows over 1515 inundated roads. 
 
This free map is open to all and offers extensive access to the entire map of the city. Citizens can report newly flooded streets and other critical information with their <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=smartphones">smartphones</a>.

Top IT firms in India are facing what could be one of their worst quarterly results in the recent past. An already poor performance in usually week Q3 was further damaged by Chennai floods and a general slowdown in the money spent on technology globally. 
 Even as the Indian IT industry stands at $146-billion today, Indian tech giants like <keyword id="6357150" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="TCS">TCS</keyword> and <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> can still fall short of Nasscom's 12-14% exports growth outlook for FY16. 
 
"Our modelling has factored in a certain figure for the likes of TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) - now we have to wait and see how the Q3 numbers turn out before we change our projections," an unnamed Nasscom executive told ET. 
 
Experts are of the opinion that India's top five software exporters may see a 1-2% fall in revenue, or at their level best, would be able to keep a flat performance, which means that they wouldn’t be posting any profits in Q3, which ends on December 31. TCS and <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword>, two of India's largest software exporters, have already issued warnings for Q3, and are afraid that the dark patch may well peek into the next financial year. 
 
"This will be a pretty bad quarter for Indian IT - no two ways about it. If they even manage to post flat growth, it will be seen as a positive by investors," a foreign brokerage analyst tracking India's software outsourcing industry told ET. 2015 has proven to be one of the toughest years for IT service providers, mainly because of clients having cut back on their spending. 
 
To top it, Chennai floods forced many IT firms to shut their offices in the city for several days, adding to the damage that has been done.

It's raining cats and dogs in Chennai. Three days on, schools remain shut, train and air services halted, telephone connectivity majorly hit as one of the worst rain havocs has left Chennai submerged bringing it to a complete standstill. IAF, Air Force, NDRF, Coast Guard are all on the ground here braving the most horrifying torrential <keyword id="13672" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rains">rains</keyword> the city has seen in the last 10 years, to steer people out of danger, yet thousands of residents lay trapped in their homes without essentials like food and water to survive. 
 
Chennai Corporation which had claimed to be ready to face such a situation after MeT’s pre warning in Sept, tried to clear water in over 300 localities all across the city, but it hardly helped. Following an increase in water levels, the civic body rescued 1,900 people on Sunday, housing them in shelters in safer locations. Food packets for residents were supplied through 81 Amma Canteens, seven community kitchens and five community halls, however, all of them have been hit hard by floods forcing them to stop the supply. 
 
With life coming to a grinding halt, the death toll rising, people carrying their essentials and walking in neck-deep water all on their own in remote areas to reach safer locations, and the agencies finding it difficult to contain the damage from floods, this is the worst Chennai has seen in a long time. It recorded 246.5 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours which breaks the record of November 2005 of 142.4 mm. 
 The heavy downpour is giving the disaster relief teams a very tough time in carrying out <keyword id="6388465" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rescue-operations">rescue operations</keyword>. Only “22 people, including 12 infants, were airlifted by the IAF from affected areas yesterday because due to constant rains, only six sorties were carried out," an IAF statement said. This is not to say that ample efforts are not being made. Air Force choppers are being used to air-drop food and drinking water in worst-hit areas. The army is using boats to rescue stranded people in many flooded areas. Even <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> is using boats to ferry people from submerged areas to safe locations. National Disaster Response Force teams are extending help to state officials in evacuations. People are also being evacuated from Kotturpuram in central Chennai as release of water from the Sembarambakkam reservoir is expected to cause more flooding in the area. But despite a pre alarm and on ground operations, 71 people have already died and several remain trapped. 
 
Notably, unlike the north-east monsoons in the previous years, what makes this year’s rains different is that it was neither a depression nor a cyclone, but a low pressure that played havoc with people’s lives. This low pressure system formed near Sri Lanka right over the Bay of Bengal crossed near the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast resulting in heavy rain and consequent flood in many parts of the state. Cuddalore and Tambaram districts are the worst hit, where many streets are completely submerged and nearly 2000 residents are trapped in their homes. 
 
Meanwhile, even as the heavy downpour has eased a bit and is now showing signs of receding, the horror is not over yet. The MeT has warned of heavy to very rainfall in Tiruvallur districts even as moderate rains are expected to continue for another three days in other areas. It means the death toll is likely to rise further as the killer rains now head towards Andhra Pradesh.

Natural calamities like floods, earthquakes etc have made people add home risk cover insurance

Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> today announced an immediate release of Rs.1,000 crore for relief and rehabilitation works in <keyword id="20154" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, after an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas. 
 
"A sum of Rs. 1,000 crore will be released immediately by the Government of India to carry out relief works. This will be in addition to Rs.940 crore which was released earlier (by the Centre)," he said in a brief statement at the naval base "INS Adyar" here. 
 
Flanked by Governor K Rosaiah and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, Modi began his brief statement with a sentence in Tamil telling people of Tamil Nadu, "I will be in support of you". 
 
Switching to English, Modi said he has seen the damage and misery caused by the monsoon fury. 
 
"People of India stay with people of Tamil Nadu in this hour of need," he said after the survey in which he was accompanied by Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, who hails from Tamil Nadu. 
 
Modi also tweeted later, "The Government of India stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Tamil Nadu in this hour of need." 
 
"I have directed that Rs. 1000 crore be released immediately by the Govt of India to Tamil Nadu for immediate relief," he said in another tweet. 
 
"I have seen the damage and misery caused by the extremely heavy rainfall," said another of his tweet. 
 
The prime minister made the announcement after holding consultations with the Chief Minister at the naval base here. 
 Earlier, Modi arrived from Delhi at the naval working station 'INS Rajali' in Arakkonam, about 60 km from here, and made an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas of <keyword id="12864" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Chennai">Chennai</keyword>, its suburbs and Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts. 
 
After an earlier spell of heavy rains and damage in November, the prime minister had announced release of Rs.940 crore to Tamil Nadu.
