How did the idea of an MTV café, and the concept of WORK, CHILL, PLAY come by? 
 
The entire idea behind the concept of WORK, CHILL, PLAY at FLYP@MTV was to create an experiential space where 
the youth of the country can come in and experience of DNA of MTV. The fun, quirkiness, boldness, attitude, stature, the overall ethos of MTV is something that we want our TG to experience in a format that they do not get bored with. 
 
FLYP@MTV is an extension of MTV’s philosophy to kill boring. The youth gets bored very easily today and it is important as a brand for us to keep them engaged and connected with us through different offerings 
 
MTV has ventured into multiple formats and have mastered the brand extensions through creative efforts; be it co-creating quality shows and campaigns or creating exciting properties or consumer merchandise and we feel this concept of WORK, CHILL &amp; PLAY with a quirky curated Food &amp; beverage menu will offer the youth multiple options to stay entertained through the entire day 
 
How do you want to position yourself in the hospitality space, especially when you have opened in CP – the hub of cafes in Delhi? 
 
Our positioning is simple and straightforward- we want to kill boring. We want to be known as a progressive destination to work, chill and play. The youth today is vibrant and loves to flip from work mode to surf mode to lounge mode and to party mode and in different order. Keeping this in mind, we have designed a place which is so much more than a café. FLYP@MTV is consistent with the DNA of MTV DNA – Experimental, Informal, Irreverent and Witty. The youth’s taste in music, style, products, food, technology etc. has all been kept in mind while working on the offerings of the café. Each element in the café gets its inspiration from various themes associated with MTV. 
 
Technology seems to be a a big part of this place. What went behind deciding on using tech innovations at FLYP @ MTV? 
 
The USP of FLYP@MTV is the engagement and interactive elements we have incorporated. For example, since we are a co-working space, it was essential for us to ensure that our consumers benefit from the each other so we have placed tablets at all tables at the café where in the consumers can check the different kinds of people in café as the same time as them and connect with them by sending a request on tablet first and upon acceptance meeting them in person next. Our talent record room is a never-seen-before element where anyone can record a song and upload it after reviewing audio and video file of the song. Usage of innovative technology like hologram on the touch screen showcasing the menu, registering a feedback on the feedback wall and a MTV Virtual Museum for the customer to explore MTV world in the previous years through oculus and controllers are some of the features that promise to take technology to a different level. 
 
What’s the short term and long term goals? 
In the short term, we want to be the must-visit destination in Delhi for people looking for inspiration, networking opportunities, a stage to showcase their talent and the best place to hang out at! MTV is known for anticipating the pulse of the youth ahead of the curve and with this café, we want to continue to set and fuel trends and create a gateway to new experiences for the consumers. In the long term, we want to continue to lead the change from on TV culture to an on-ground experience and expand into markets like Bangalore and Mumbai next followed by expansion in cities like Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and even Jaipur. Our plan is to open at least 10 cafes in the next 5 years. 
 
What’s the kind of response you are looking at? 
The response so far since the opening has been overwhelming. To continue the momentum, we aim to engage with the hugely growing young urban population in the capital-NCR region and present them with newer opportunities to explore and experience. We have created experiences to ensure enough reasons for FLYP@MTV to become a cult work place and the must party hangout. For an experiential aspect, the café promises to be a learning hub for its consumers, allowing them to attend art, music and other workshops organized in-house without any extra charges. The food and cocktail menu which has been curated by the celebrated Chef Ranveer Brar has been detailed with fusion and original house recipes and an explosive events calendar has also been planned for the months ahead to keep up with the party quotient. We want more and more people to walk into our doors and become regulars eventually.

Know why MTV’s brand new Cafe in Delhi is the
place to visit this year!

We all love a good <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Drinking-lots-of-coffee-is-associated-with-a-longer-life/articleshow/49838843.cms">cuppa</a> but how many of us really know what our coffee tastes like? I had no clue until I spoke to Matt Chitranjan, the co-founder of Blue Tokai, who told us that most of the time, the coffee we start our day with, is almost stale! 
 
To understand better, I decided to visit his cafe, Blue Tokai, in the city. Located in an inaccessible corner of Saket, my first thought was why would anyone even come here? However, as I stepped in, the strong aroma of coffee fills up my senses. Several bags of coffee beans are neatly stacked up in a room while two women are busy milling the beans. 
 
The rest of the space has three tables lined up where one can choose their choice of coffee from the menu. The menu too is pretty interesting. It doesn’t just offer you coffee, it also gives a brief description of the estates from where the respective coffee beans have been sourced from. 
As Matt and I both sit down, I ask him what I had been wanting to ask him since I walked in—Why have you opened your first café in such an inaccessible location? 
 
“Well, there are a lot of offices around here. So a lot of people come in for coffee during their breaks,” he says. “And we will soon be starting our delivery services, which is why this place is pretty convenient,” Chitranjan adds. 
 
This is the first offline retail outlet for the company, which for the past three years, has been operating as an online coffee roaster, delivery coffee pan India. “We deliver in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Odisha, Bihar, Rajasthan and almost all cities in India,” he notes. 
 
A former economist, Chitranjan landed in Chennai for a short stint in development finance, where he met his future wife Namrata Asthana. A coffee hobbyist, he and his wife managed to get a decent cup of coffee while they were down south. By the way, down South, people love their filter coffee. 
 
However, when they move to Delhi, they were disappointed with the coffee that was served in the high-end cafes of the city. “The coffee that they offer is bad. While Café Coffee Day serves Robusta coffee, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/The-incredible-rags-to-riches-story-of-Starbucks-billionaire-Howard-Schultz/articleshow/49487899.cms">Starbucks </a>offers Arabica. However, the coffee that they sell has been roasted a couple of months ago down South. So, what is being served is not fresh,” he tells BI India. 
 
And that’s how Blue Tokai was started. A coffee roaster initially, he realized that coffee drinkers in this part of the country had no idea about what good coffee was. “We did not start as a proper business with any particular strategy in place. Rather, it started as a need-based thing, which ultimately turned into a business venture,” he recalls. 
 So, how does he plan to beat competition in the market? After all, while Café Coffee Day dominates the mass market, <keyword id="6377922" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Starbucks">Starbucks</keyword> rules the premium segment. And with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/McDonalds-and-Starbucks-face-backlash-after-opening-locations-in-a-cultural-heritage-site-in-China/articleshow/49837935.cms">McDonalds</a> entering the coffee segment with its <keyword id="331136" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="McCafe">McCafe</keyword>, the market has really spiced up. 
 
“The market is really small and we have been competitively priced. A pack of Indian coffee in Starbucks would cost you nearly Rs 1000 bucks while we offer Indian coffee for just Rs 300,” explains Chitranjan. 
 
Besides, consumers now want to really understand how coffee actually tastes. Blue Tokai has been engaging with the consumers through their blogs. Also, the company has seen a substantial rise in the queries for their coffee. “Initially, our consumers used to expats and NRIs. But now, a lot of young professionals want to understand the different experiences of coffees. And this is primarily through organic promotion that is through word of mouth,” he says. 
 
Interestingly, coffee chains in India have been drawing 80% of their revenues from their food business instead of their coffee business. With an initial investment of about Rs 40 lakhs, the company has been recording profits year-on-year. “ We have also raised a funding of Rs 3 crore from two investors,” says Chitranajan happily. 
 
The company plans to expand its alliances business with restaurants and has currently partnered with the likes of The Oberoi, Park Hotel and Lodhi Garden restaurant in the city. Apart from this, it will also open two to three outlets in both Delhi and Mumbai. But unless, this doesn’t happen, it seems coffee lovers will have to survive on the dope doled out by our dear overpriced cafes in the city.

Move over Starbucks and CCD, Blue Tokai gives you the real taste of coffee

The Indian <keyword id="6354798" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="coffee">coffee</keyword> retail market has been buzzing over the last 12 months with two key players <keyword id="6377922" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Starbucks">Starbucks</keyword> and Cafe Coffee Day on expansion drive. The market size of retail coffee in India is estimated at Rs 1700 crore plus and expected to grow at a fast pace of over 20% in the recent times. This story explores what are the key drivers fuelling the industry and what are the key challenges breaking its growth speed. 
 
The good: What’s working and key drivers 
 
Expansion drive: The entry of global coffee retailer Starbucks has turned out to be one of the key growth drivers of the coffee retail market. Since the launch of its first store in 2012, the coffee retailer has opened 50 stores across Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Chennai. Starbucks’ India operations are a part of Tata Starbucks Ltd, which is a 50:50 joint venture between the US coffee retailer and Tata Global Beverages. Starbucks stores attract not only the regular coffee goers (which are the youngsters), but it also has lured the executive segment which otherwise stayed away from coffee shops due to their association with being a spot for college goers. 
 
On the other hand, Cafe Coffee Day, India’s biggest coffee retailer, has launched approximately 150 stores over the last one year. The total store count of this retailer is about 1550, with presence in 200 cities. This increase in the total number of stores and Starbucks brand name has added to the growth and expansion of this market. 
 
Increasing disposable income and expansion of consumption culture: Another key drive which has given a boost to the Indian coffee retail space is the increase in consumption culture, westernization and increased disposable income. Over the last one decade, Indian consumers have shifted from being saving oriented to be more consumption oriented, more so in the last 4 years. This shift in our consumer behaviour has taken away the mental barrier on spending on eating out. Thus, Spending Rs 200-400 on a cup of coffee along with some food is not big deterrent for today’s Indian consumers. 
 
Different formats to catch every consumer segment: Cafe Coffee Day follows a mix of various formats including mall formats, highways, Lounge (premium upscale format) and Square (which is a single-origin coffee destination). Having these different formats has helped it tap into the various consumer segment in the market with their different spending power and preferences. This has been quite a smart strategy and a few small coffee retailers are also following this format to tap this market better. 
 
Indianisation: One of the key reasons of Starbucks instant success in India is being attributed to its Indianisation of store ambience as well as food menu. Most of the stores of this US retailer have interiors done with an Indian flavour. Hand-carved wooden screens, tables of solid Indian teak, painted vintage trunks, Indian theme paintings, etc. are a key part of the stores. The indianisation is clearly visible in the menu too. So there is a Reshami Kabab fighting for your attention against the Classic Breakfast Chicken Sandwich. The Indian Chai Latte, Murg Kathi Roll, Konkani Twist, etc. are a few other options that add Indian flavour to the offering of Starbucks in India. Experts believe that this Indianisation of the menu, particularly, food has really helped increase spending per person/group in a single visit and also ensured repeat visits of families. While the standard global offerings like blueberry muffic, Sandwich biscuit, quiche, etc. keeps stays to be an attraction for the younger as well as corporate consumers. 
 
 
The bad and the ugly: Key challenges 
 
The struggle: The coffee retail is a segment which has also seen many players struggling and failing. With more than 3100 stores across the country and the industry size of Rs 1700 crore, the competition is quite intense with very less margin for error. Barrista, which had quite a good footing for a few years, is seemingly more lost with its parent Lavazza scouting for a buyer. Gloria Jean, which has been struggling since its launch in India is considering to pull out. Costa Coffee which is world’s second largest coffee retailer and has been in India for quite a few years, has still not been able to find a strong footing and has about only 100 stores after all these years of operation in the country. 
 
Two player battle: So far, the Coffee retailing market seems largely a two player battle between Cafe Coffee Day and Starbucks, primarily because they seem to have winning Indian consumer’s heart as well as their wallet. This is another challenge for the market’s overall growth. Unless, other players don’t hit it off with the consumers expanding the market will remain a challenge. With more players getting established, there will be more innovation, better service, better quality which will boost the sector’s growth. But that seems to be lacking at the moment. 
 
The economic impact: The economic slowdown of 2009 did hit the coffee retail sector majorly, as with incomes and job securities going down, people did became cautious in nature. Industry experts believe while things have started to look up more recently, consumer approach is still not back to what it was back in 2008. 
 
Real estate costs: High real estate cost is another challenge that cuts into the margin of coffee retailers. While these costs have gone down slightly in the last couple of years, it still is quite high. In a good location, almost 505 of the enterprise cost goes for the real estate. This affects the overall costing and profitability of the coffee retailers.

Billore — a son of a farmer — founded MBA Chai Wala as ‘Mr Billore Ahmedabad’ in 2017 after three consecutive failed attempts at CAT examinations. He wanted to get an MBA college and work at a multinational corporation, but instead he opened a small ‘thela’ cart outside his dream college IIM Ahmedabad. “Under my father’s pressure, I also took admission in a local college but I dropped out in 12 days. My father got really upset. But I wanted to create my own identity,” Billore noted. His brother Vivek Billore also joined MBA Chai Wala as a cofounder in 2020. The company has expanded to 100 cities like Bhopal, Srinagar, Surat, Delhi and more — since 2021. It now plans to double that number this year. It is currently opening 10-15 franchise stores on a monthly basis in an attempt to achieve these targets. Each of these stores are operated under the brand name MBA Chai Wala but will be financially managed by a franchise partner, who also handle all the investments that go into the outlet. The company charges ₹20 lakh on an annual basis to sell its franchises. Billore claims that the original MBA Chai Wala outlet in Ahmedabad earns up to ₹17 lakh a month. Meanwhile, an average MBA Chai Wala outlet employs seven employees and a smaller outlet provides employment opportunities to roughly five people. Based on this, the company will be generating employment for at least 500 people through its next 100 stores. MBA Chai Wala has been focusing on expansion in Northern India so far but it will now also look to expand in the southern part of the country, Praful Billore told Business Insider India. He noted that they will launch stores in Chennai, Bengaluru, Belgaum, Goa, Tirupati and more. “We used to get inquiry [for franchise] earlier too, but we scaled our business, built a name first and then started the franchise model,” Billore added. New Delhi, Nov 20 () Co-working platform myHQ on Wednesday sait it has raised USD 1.5 million (around Rs 10.7 crore) from investors including India Quotient to fund expansion plan.
 The startup has been founded in 2016 by two IIT Delhi graduates - Utkarsh Kawatra and Vinayak Agrawal. It offers workspaces across 120+ locations in Delhi-NCR region at places like restaurants, cafes, co-working centre and office complexes that have excess inventory.
 "myHQ has raised USD 1.5 million in its pre-Series A round led by India Quotient. The round also saw investments from Singapore-based family office RB Investments, Ashish Goenka from Suashish, angels from the online platform LetsVenture and participations from existing investors (Anupam Mittal and Nitish Mittersian amongst others)," the company said in a statement.
 myHQ said it plans to utilise the funds to expand into new cities, introduce new product offerings and invest in their technology infrastructure.
 "This investment underlines our investors' confidence in our model that offers greater value to those who are looking for a workspace. Using existing excess real estate inventory available with third-parties, not only reduces our financial risks but also allows us to offer workspaces to our customer at an extremely affordable price," said Utkarsh Kawatra, Co-founder, myHQ.
 This fund raise not only reaffirms the business, but also reflects the growing demand for such spaces by the modern workforce, said Vinayak Agrawal, co-founder, myHQ.

But we must warn you that while happily cruising on well-made tar roads you may land up literally nowhere. "Some (roads) took us to beaches and others just abruptly ended by fields or the forest," Dr. Vasireddy tells us. <div type="image" title="Roads leading to nowhere, Havelock" msid="81127015" hostid="261"></div> Beaches <keyword id="1578932" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Radhanagar-beach">Radhanagar Beach</keyword> (Beach No.7), Elephant Beach, and Vijaynagar Beach (Beach No.5) are some of the most well-known beaches in Havelock. Radhanagar beach is flanked by the ocean on one side and lush rainforest on the other. This west-facing beach is ideal for catching the sunset. You can also walk down to Neil's Cove, a secluded spot perfect for sunbathing and a spot for swimming in shallow water. <div type="image" title="Sunset at Havelock" msid="81127095" hostid="261"></div> Elephant beach may not be easy to get to, but the beauty of the place more than makes up for the effort. The beach features some bleached driftwood and logs that provide an excellent backdrop for a photo-op. This is also an ideal place to go snorkelling. Vijaynagar beach is where the buzz is. This is where most of the restaurants, hotels and snorkelling centres are situated. The beach faces east and is, therefore, a great place to catch the sunrise. However, because the water is shallow and strewn with rocks, swimming here is not the easiest. <div type="image" title="Red snapper grilled in lemon pepper sauce with rice and roasted potatoes" msid="81127169" hostid="261"></div> Food The local food, if idyllic surroundings are not enough, is usually a combination of Indian and continental cuisine that is absolutely delicious. Dr. Vasireddy recommends - Fat Martin's Cafe in Vijaynagar that serves south Indian food including a delicious Nutella dosa; Anju Coco that strangely enough serves the "best biriyani”; Something Different serves excellent continental seafood pizza and amazing desserts; Moonlight Cafe is great for seafood. The restaurants here are a seafood lovers paradise, serving up a fantastic variety of fresh red snappers, calamari, prawns, and so much more. That being said, there are plenty of vegetarian options too. Accommodation There are plenty of hotels to choose from high-end Taj Hotels to more affordable options like Wild Orchid, SilverSand Beach Resort, Munjoh Ocean Resort and Symphony Palms Beach Resort. The hotels are clean, and most are environmentally conscious. Most hotels and restaurants on the Island provide only RO water and not plastic bottles, as is sadly the norm elsewhere. And if you choose to buy water, the local stores have nothing smaller than 2-litre bottles to reduce the amount of plastic used. <div type="image" title="Bambooka, the government ferry" msid="81127801" hostid="261"></div> How to get there From Port Blair, the best way to get to Havelock is by ferry. The government ferry from Port Blair to Havelock takes around 2.5 hours but please note that the outside deck area has no seating, so you will have to bring something to place on the floor to sit on. The booking process is slightly cumbersome, but you can get a travel agent to take care of everything, which will still be cheaper than private options. MV Makruzz and Coastal Cruise are the private companies that ferry people across to the Island. They take around 1.5 hours to get to Havelock. Connectivity If you are hankering for some serious digital detox there is no better place than Havelock. There is limited to no connectivity on the island. BSNL is the only cellular service that works but the network is patchy. Hotels usually provide wi-fi access, but most are limited to the lobby area. <div type="image" title="Port Blair" msid="81127917" hostid="261"></div> PORT BLAIR While Andaman and Nicobar Islands' capital may not seem all that appealing as a tourism destination, there are plenty of places you can visit while here. There is a high probability of you spending the night there since the ferries to the islands do not operate at night. So depending on your flight timing, chances are, one way or the other you will have to stay in Port Blair. If you opt to stay in Port Blair, <keyword id="10800405" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chidiya-Tapu">Chidiya Tapu</keyword> (Bird Island) is an excellent place to explore. The area offers some fabulous diving spots, including Mundapahad, ideal for beginners and the old shipwreck, a site for advanced divers and home to clownfish, schooling snapper, resting ray and lots of colourful corals. If you want to give the water a break, the place is an excellent spot for birdwatching. The mangroves and rainforests here play host to a bunch of migratory birds and flowers. You can also hike to Mundapahad lighthouse. ReefWatch Marine Conservation, in collaboration with Lacadives, offers an informative mangrove walk (when the tide is out) and informs you about the surrounding ecosystem. <div type="image" title="The view from Mt. Harriet" msid="81127981" hostid="261"></div> Dr. Vasireddy decided to stay at the relatively new Big Tree Resort featuring only eight cabins, an in-house restaurant and a supremely friendly dog called Momo. Momo insists all guests should play with him and will bring you a coconut husk that you need to pry out of his mouth and throw so that he can fetch it, thus providing an excellent way to drive away the blues. <div type="image" title="Cellular Jail" msid="81128022" hostid="261"></div> Another site that may be worth a visit, especially if you are a history buff, is the colonial prison called Cellular Jail (Kālā Pānī) that is where most freedom fighters, including Veer Savarkar, were shipped off to before independence. There is an informative light show in the evening and the tour of the jail itself is quite fascinating. <div type="image" title="Limestone Caves" msid="81128047" hostid="261"></div> BARATANG MANGROVE FOREST AND LIMESTONE CAVES To experience the fascinating limestone caves and mangrove forests in <keyword id="5041058" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Baratang-Island">Baratang Island</keyword>, you will have to head to the Jirkatang check post (a little over an hour-long-drive from Port Plair), which marks the beginning of the area where the Jarawa tribes of Andaman Islands live. After the clearance is done, you can drive through Jarawa reserve forest, but note that taking photos is strictly not prohibited. Once you reach the other end, you have to take a ferry to cross the water and arrive at Baratang. Here you can take a permit and board a speedboat to ride through the mangroves and arrive at a trekking spot from where you have to walk for 1.2 km through villages to reach the spectacular limestone caves. The journey may sound daunting, but this is one of the unforgettable experiences you wouldn't want to miss. However, respecting the people's privacy and regulations, particularly of the tribals, is of paramount importance.

Before Rhea Sanghi joined <keyword id="4164636" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="BLUE-TOKAI">Blue Tokai</keyword> <keyword id="6354798" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="coffee">Coffee</keyword> Roasters as its Community Manager in October 2015, she had never been much of a coffee drinker. Now, coffee is such a deeply-ingrained part of her life that it’s hard for her to imagine how she lived without it, she confesses. In a similar vein, Blue Tokai aims to give India’s coffee drinkers, traditionally used to instant coffee or the likes of Barista and Cafe Coffee Day, a transformative experience with its specialty blends. The idea for Blue Tokai took root in the minds of the co-founders, Matt Chittaranjan and Namrata Asthana, when they moved from Chennai to Delhi in 2012 and found themselves out of options for fresh and accessible specialty coffee. It all started with some farm visits Matt and Namrata visited a number of coffee estates in southern India, mainly in Karnataka, with the end goal of sourcing beans for the domestic retail market. Rhea says that the farmers scoffed at the couple upon hearing this. They said that there wasn’t a market for specialty coffee in India. Before Blue Tokai and other specialty coffee brands came along, these coffee farmers mainly exported their produce. India ranks among the largest producers of coffee in the world, but exports around 70% of its beans to the other countries, most notably Italy and Australia. The high quality blends were exported, while the cheaper, less flavourful beans were meant for instant coffee. Matt and Namrata invested in a roaster and began sourcing the beans directly from the farmers. After roasting the beans, they would sell the roasted beans to customers through online channels. Slowly but surely, the company helped drive a paradigm shift in India’s coffee <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword> by introducing people to its single-estate Arabica coffees. “This is how Blue Tokai demonstrated innovation,” Rhea laughs, “by giving people good coffee that didn’t burn their tongues and tasted naturally sweet instead of bitter.” Changing tastes The company wasn’t alone. Blue Tokai started operations as Starbucks was ramping up its presence in India through a joint venture with Tata- an indicator that Indian consumers were ready for change. “In the last few years, specialty coffee has become the go-to choice for a specific kind of Indian,” Rhea says, “the upwardly mobile metro-dwellers who are used to a certain lifestyle. They’re looking to curate their world with good brands and are willing to travel lengths to get their daily dose of caffeine, even though they don’t necessarily have to.” In around five years, Starbucks’ has already reached a 100 outlets in India, buoyed by an aspirational urban middle class that is looking to sip local brews while working at cafes. Apart of raising consumer awareness, Starbucks’ growth has demonstrated that the coffee market is taking off in India, and that there is room for other brands. In addition to Blue Tokai, a number of homegrown coffee brands have sprung up in the last few years - Bangalore’s Flying Squirrel and Third Wave Coffee, Goa’s Sussegado and Mumbai’s The Indian Bean - all of which have looked to plug the market gap with their domestically sourced, specialty blends. Even though they’re all vying for shelf space in retail stores, selling wholesale to restaurants and experimenting with the cafe model, their national reach is made possible through e-commerce. The end result? Indian consumers are spoilt for choice. Blue Tokai’s retail customer base mostly comprises people between the ages of 27 and 35 who are more aware of their choices and what they’re consuming. When asked what sets Blue Tokai’s customers apart from those of big chains, Rhea quips, “Our customers are people who know the difference between good coffee and great coffee.” Rhea joined Blue Tokai just as it was launching its first cafe, which was attached to its roastery in Delhi’s Saiyad Ul Ajaib area. In her first few months, she was privy to the roastery’s escalation to a full-service cafe. “With each day came more customer feedback to act on, more staff to train and more additions to the menu.” She was also charged with leading the company’s social media strategy and building a community through events like brewing classes. “Why the cafe?” I ask Rhea. The idea was to have an espresso bar where prospective customers could taste their coffee before purchasing a particular blend of roasted beans. Blue Tokai was primarily in the business of online sales before launching the cafe. However, Matt and Namrata soon realised that no one in the market was offering good, freshly-brewed coffee for direct purchase. “We started selling cortados, flat whites and pour overs,” Rhea says, “and once that took off, people said that they wanted food options, WiFi and power outlets.” Caffeine-induced growth The company’s growth is impressive.There were around 15 to 20 employees at the company when she joined. There are now 140. I’m talking to Rhea in Blue Tokai’s fifth cafe, at Gurgaon’s Bristol Chowk. They currently have seven outlets, spread across Bombay and Delhi, with an eighth one slated to open in Panjim, Goa by the third week of April. “We never intend to go the franchising route,” Rhea explains, “all our cafes will be owned and operated by us so we can maintain our quality”. Rhea is currently Blue Tokai’s head of marketing and partnerships. Her role covers all three facets of Blue Tokai’s business: the online retail segment, the wholesale segment, which involves supply arrangements with 400 partners such as restaurants, hotels and corporates, and finally, the cafes. She has more than a few things on her plate at the moment. She’s building a team to handle cafe operations and customer service on a zonal basis. She’s working to streamline Blue Tokai’s social media presence. She’s growing the B2B sales program. She’s tying up with partners for a range of events such as India Art Fair, Magnetic Fields and Design ID. She’s onboarding more food partners to strengthen the menu at Blue Tokai’s cafes. She’s also working with smaller food and beverage brands on cross-promotion opportunities and pop-ups. It seems that this emphasis on community has paid off. “We have amazingly loyal customers,” Rhea says. “We try to be as approachable as possible, which helps us get a lot of constructive feedback from customers.” “What else sets Blue Tokai apart?” I ask her. It’s the kind of ingratiating question so common in interviews with company insiders, one that invariably unlocks a number of empty buzzwords and feel-good catchphrases. But Rhea doesn’t disappoint: “We are farm-to-cup in the truest sense.” The company’s purpose, from the very beginning, was to cut out the middleman and give its coffee farmers the credit they deserve. Most coffee chains or distributors buy their coffee through a series of intermediaries and sell their products weeks after the beans have been roasted. Blue Tokai sources the beans from 11 estates, as detailed on its website, roasts them at least a few times a week and sells them directly in cafes or ships them within one or two days. Rhea also alludes to the company’s emphasis on transparency. “Everything we do is very consciously done. All our products go out with a roast date and the details of the estate that it was sourced from. Our roasteries in Bombay and Delhi are open to the public so they get a first-hand insight into the roasting process.” We’re nearing the end of our interview. I ask Rhea about Blue Tokai’s plans for the short-to-medium term. “We want to make our coffee more accessible,” she says, “ the idea is to open more cafes and be in as many places as possible.” In addition to Panjim, the company is considering expanding into other Tier-2 cities. “People in places like Jaipur and Surat drink A LOT of coffee,” Rhea explains. Blue Tokai is also planning to expand its product slate. “We’re looking to sell brewed coffee through retail channels - bottled, cold brew and nitro, mainly. The market for preserved, ready-to-drink coffee has a lot of potential.” Rhea needs to get back to work, her phone has been ringing incessantly over the past hour. I conclude with one last question. “Has your experience at Blue Tokai made you confident about starting your own company one day?” “Yes” she replies almost immediately. She laughs as she gets up. “It’s hard to imagine how it wouldn’t be coffee-related, though.”

The Quick Service Restaurants or QSRs are undergoing ‘the struggle for existence’ in the Indian market. Blame it on the buying psyche or cut-throat competition, the chains are jostling against each other to win customer’s preferences. Going an extra mile to woo its customer, <keyword id="6377922" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Starbucks">Starbucks</keyword>, world’s largest coffee chain managed by the <keyword id="6355725" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Group">Tata group</keyword> in India has started offering big discounts to attract more customers. As per a news report by The Economic Times, anyone buying before 4 pm will get a voucher for 40% off the bill when she next visits a Starbucks in Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi NCR, Pune, Hyderabad or <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> after 6 pm. An additional 10% discount is being offered to those who have a Starbucks loyalty card. 
 
“We are constantly trying to innovate and create interesting offers for our customers," marketing and category director Manmeet Vohra told the Economic Times. "This 'treat receipt' is a concept that has been conceptualised from this thought." Starbucks is not the only cafe chain that's discounting to win customers. 
 
Experts told the financial daily, this is happening because of competing claims for the consumer wallet, not just in terms of brands but the rapidly increasing adoption of eCommerce. It's not just coffee shops that are offering discounts to drum up business-the quick service restaurant or QSR segment is pushing hard on promotions. 
 
Domino's has a 'buy one, get one free' offer on pizzas every Friday, while Pizza Hut has a similar one for Wednesdays. McDonald's offers cash back of up to Rs 50, which customers can avail of on mobile recharge site Freecharge. 
 "The QSR and cafe industry is getting into a circular firing-squad formation, trying to kill each other to grab market share, as if this is the only way to grow in an early-stage growth market," Jaspal Singh Sabharwal, partner at Everstone Capital, local master franchisee for <keyword id="33542" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Burger-King">Burger King</keyword> told the ET. 
 
He attributed this to a variety of factors such as sluggish demand, massive pressure to expand and the emergence of the millennials, also known as Gen Y and referring broadly to those born in the 1980-2000 periods or thereabouts. 
 
Rivals cafe chains also offer discounts but these have typically been restricted to either one day a week, specific menu items or are in the range of 20-30%. Costa Coffee ran a limited Happy Hours promotion two years ago to boost custom during non-peak hours (after 8 pm). 
 
 
Sabharwal of Everstone said patience would pay good dividends. "Most global brands are backed by strong balance sheets and usually have a longer term view of the Indian market but this time it is different - they are all in a hurry. Mom and pop restaurants and responsible QSR Chains would suffer in the beginning but the future belongs to them as they prepared to build communities of customers around them. It is already happening in the developed world and India won't be an exception," he said.

The result, the authors write, is that "Areas of Stockholm are now rife with 'latte dads' - typically youngish, bearded men carrying their babies in slings or hanging out with their toddlers."Americans aren't the only ones seeking out the life of a latte dad in Sweden. In a 2012 article in the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/money/2012/nov/18/swedish-latte-pappa-shared-childcare">The Observer</a> by a British man who was raising his kids in Malmö, Sweden, journalist <a href="https://aeon.co/essays/swedens-hands-on-dads-and-the-hormones-of-fatherhood">Richard Orange</a> writes:"Men with prams have become such a familiar sight since shared parental leave was first introduced in 1974 (a full 41 years before parents are scheduled to get it in the UK under the government's proposals) that there's even a name - 'latte pappas' - for the tribe."At the free-of-charge, drop-in play group in Malmö that is my morning refuge, the pappas often outnumber the mammas. I'll find myself sitting cross-legged next to a taciturn Swedish engineer, a heavily tattooed biker, or another migrant - there's a computer programmer from Chennai - as our children play with the wooden blocks, rattles and drums."And a 2014 article from <a href="https://www.sbs.com.au/news/thefeed/story/meet-latte-pappas-swedish-men-who-stay-home-look-after-children">Australia's SBS</a> profiles Andrew Gillard, an Australian living in Sweden. He says the latte dad, or latte pappa, is a common sight: "You probably wouldn't see the same thing happening in Australia," he told SBS. "You've got four or five guys all around 30 years old pushing a pram, going into a cafe, and having a latte."Latte dads aren't so commonplace because of their taste for caffeine. They're a direct result of Sweden's parental leave policy, one of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/maternity-leave-worldwide-2017-8">most progressive in the world</a>. The Swedish government says that parents of both sexes are entitled to 480 days (16 months) of paid parental leave at 80% of their salary (with a cap), plus 180 bonus days for twins, and they must share - Swedish dads must take at least three of those 16 months. The days don't expire until the child is 8 years old."These days, for Swedish dads, the decision is not 'Will I take time off to be with my child?' but 'How long will I take?' Most take three to nine months," Swedish dad Jonas Frid told Martin Daubney for <a href="https://www.theaustralian.com.au/life/weekend-australian-magazine/rise-of-the-scandi-dad/news-story/d1a5daeeac5afadd61a560edd329d046">The Australian</a>.That's a huge departure from many other western countries. The US in particular is known for its ungenerous leave.
