<ul><li>After <keyword id="880130" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cheil-India">Cheil India</keyword> came under criticism for allegedly asking its employees to <keyword id="8954729" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Work-from-Office">work from office</keyword> in the midst of the pandemic, the agency denied the allegations.</li><li>In its official statement, the agency said that its employees have been working from home since April 2021.</li></ul>For the last few weeks, our social media timelines and TV screens have been flooded with heartrending scenes from what is happening across the country. We have seen people struggling to find hospital beds, oxygen and have seen so many people lose their near and dear ones. In fact, the virus has attacked us with such brute force in this second wave that almost everyone seems to have lost family and friends. At such a time, advertising agency Cheil India has come under criticism for allegedly asking its employees to work from office in the midst of this raging pandemic. In a post shared by Rahul Bhatnagar, an ex-employee of Cheil India, he mentions, “Despite repetitive requests and implores, my ex-agency decides to keep its offices open during the peak of the coronavirus pandemic, forcing and threatening its employees to come to office.” While Bhatnagar didn’t mention the agency, a few people tagged Cheil India in the comments. <div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Text"><cdata><![CDATA[]]></cdata></div> We reached out to Cheil India and it denied the allegations. The agency said that its employees have been working from home since the beginning of April 2021. Replying to an email query, the agency said, “India’s Covid crisis has been beyond heartbreaking. No company was immune to ravage of Covid. We recently lost two of our employees to Covid. It has been a very tragic and unfortunate time for all of us but we have been standing by our employees all throughout. Amid this tough time, we are working round the clock to provide necessary medical aid and support the mental wellbeing of our people. Cheil India has been following all government protocols and safety guidelines since the onset of Pandemic last year. We started with 10% capacity last year. We have constantly been amending our Work from Office policies and ensuring complete safety of all our employees at workplace. From weekly tests for all our employees to maintaining complete social distancing, from sanitization of our office on regular intervals to following all safety and hygiene measures, we were adhering to all the government laid guidelines. We were operating at 40-45% capacity in January 2021 and completely shifted to <keyword id="123591" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Work-from-home">Work from Home</keyword> model beginning April 2021. For us, our employees are our priority.” For the last few weeks, India has been witnessing a surge in Covid-19 infections with the country seeing over 3 lakh fresh cases of Covid-19 daily. On April 15th, India had registered 2,16,642 new COVID-19 cases and Maharashtra had reported 61,695 infections, accounting for nearly 31% of new cases and Delhi followed with 16,699 cases. On April 13th, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray had imposed section 144 in the state and had announced that all establishments should be shut down, except for essentials. A curfew was announced in Delhi on April 15th. As per a Cheil employee’s comment on Bhatnagar’s post, the agency was working from their office till April 16. He said that Cheil was working last year in May when the entire country observed a lockdown. “Could have been easily done from home but no...After running the show since May 6th, 2020 from their swanky gurgaon office, yes the office was open last year too when the world was home...their confidence was oozing....when india was peaking at 2 lakh cases per day, a creative guy was admitted in a hospital, a planner severely afflicted others and a few more started taking leaves for covid symptoms. Cheil went on working from office till 16th of april. Only if they had shut a week early. Just a week keeping their massive egos aside. Only if they didn’t put lives before business. It’s sad, just sad how many families and there are many that are going through distress and pain right now,” wrote the employee. Vanddana Bhalla, Business Service Director at McCann Worldwide Group, blamed the client. She commented on the post, saying, “This problem comes from Samsung Electronics. They forced Cheil and further teams to come to work. Both are equally responsible. We have lost two great people.” Another ex-employee called working with Cheil India a mistake. She said, “Cheil India is one of my mistakes too. Their employees are just numbers to them who should not have any self-respect or personality to stand up against the bullshit they put you through.” Nikhil Narayan, Creative Director at Ogilvy, took to LinkedIn to dedicate a song to the two employees who lost their lives to COVID, reminding all agencies that empathy is the need of the hour. <div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Text"><cdata><![CDATA[]]></cdata></div> We're all living in constant fear that someone close to us might contract the virus. <ul><li> As we come to the end of 2021, most of us are entering 2022 with a lot of hope and positivity. </li><li>Despite the challenges, 2021 turned out to be a good year in terms of the campaigns our creative agencies churned out. We saw many heartwarming, thought-provoking, quirky campaigns that won our hearts through the year.</li><li>In today's edition of our year-ender series, we talk to the best storytellers from the Indian advertising world and they tell us their expectations from 2022.</li></ul>2020 was one of the most difficult years we have faced in recent times which brought with it massive challenges. With people stuck at their homes, many of the traditional mediums witnessed a huge drop in spending. 2021, therefore has been a year of slow recovery. While the first half of the year was, in some ways, even more challenging, owing to the havoc the second wave of Covid-19 wreaked, things have been steadying slowly. The second half of the year has seen consumer sentiments slowly moving towards positive and it has been a good festive season. GroupM in its recently published report gave some positive news, that the industry is recovering much faster than earlier anticipated. And there have been signs of the green shoots too with different mediums recording good growth. BARC recently revealed that the November ad volumes for Television stood at 156 million seconds, 3% higher than 2020 and 31% higher than 2019. Meanwhile, Digital has been witnessing steady growth. Magna’s recently released report noted that digital ad formats grew by +20% (APAC average: +23%) to Rs 21,400 crore, while traditional media rose +12% to Rs 44,300 crore. The report also predicted a good recovery for traditional mediums like Print that were impacted due to the pandemic. For mediums like OOH and Experiential, the recovery is slower but again, the hope is 2022 will bring some cheer. With consumer sentiments turning positive and brands’ increasing willingness to spend more on advertising, things seem to be on the mend for now. However, even in a year when AdEx had been impacted, our creative agencies came up with some beautiful campaigns to make the year just a little better for us. From CRED’s Indiranagar ka Gunda to Mondelez’s reimagining of its iconic cricket stadium ad for Cadbury Dairy Milk, we have seen some heartwarming ads that made the year just a little more bearable. Meanwhile, a lot of brands also moved towards purpose-driven marketing. We also saw agencies come up with wonderful ideas to solve consumer problems. So, there was a shift from hard-selling to storytellers also becoming problem-solvers and this is a trend we hope stays. It will all be about going that extra mile, doing some good for the society. Cannes Lions announces 2020 Jury Presidents; for the first time, 50% Presidents are women

According <a href="http://www.clioawards.com/press/index.cfm?year=2014&amp;pressid=262">to the list of jury members released by the event's organizers</a>, there will be 30 female jury members this year and only 29 men.
"We've been talking about it for over a year, since before we even started going through the jury selection process," CLIO Awards executive director Nicole Purcell said. "It really started to come together, and this year, we have an amazing jury."
The CLIO Awards is an annual, international competition honoring achievements in advertising, design, and communications. Each year, agencies and individuals submit their best work for consideration in 18 media types ranging from film to direct marketing. Since its inception in 1959, the contest has been judged by juries that were primarily male.
In the past, the show has given awards to ads that were not exactly progressive when it comes to gender, like <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ptmk-7h075k">this 2009 winner</a> for a Japanese hair removal brand called Esthe WAM:

The CLIOs set about to change that this past year, when the organization announced its intention to field a gender-equal jury in 2014 to be more strongly reflect the contributions of women to the advertising industry.
To do this, Purcell and her team created a place on the CLIO Awards website for people to submit anonymous nominations, since women are less likely than men to submit themselves for consideration. The CLIO Awards also met with the major agencies to find talented women and encourage them to serve as judges.
With the help of the agencies and the awareness created by ongoing industry conversation gender equality in creative roles, Purcell said the task of finding talented females for her juries was not particularly difficult.
"It came easier than it has in the past, I think because of everyone talking about creative women in the field," Purcell said. "People are always asking 'Where are these female creatives?' Well, guess what? We just found them."
Purcell said she did not think the increased number of women on the juries would alter the results of the competitions in any way.
"At the end of the day, when we start the jury selection process, what we're looking for is the thought provokers and the idea generators," said Brooke Barasch, the CLIO Awards' director of marketing. "The idea really isn't about the perspective of males or females, it's really about just having the creative minds in the room."
