New Delhi, June 24 () Delhi Jal Board Vice Chairman Raghav Chadha on Wednesday inspected water supply engineering works undertaken by the DJB at the 10,000-bed COVID care centre at Radha Soami Satsang Beas in Chattarpur area here. The DJB has carried out engineering works and installed hydrants to connect the underground reservoir to which clean water will be provided to all patients and health care staff, he said. Chadha said the DJB will collect water samples five times a day and check the water quality. The water utility has also appointed a nodal officer to ensure proper water supply and related modalities. "The underground reservoir facility along with the installed hydrants will be 1,70,000 litres. We have also decided that water samples will be drawn five times a day from this facility and tested to ensure the best quality of water is supplied," he said. "We will ensure that pure water in adequate quantities is made available at the site" he said. After taking stock of the preparations at the Radha Soami Satsang Beas COVID Centre, he said, "I'm happy to report that a large part of the facility will be ready for use in about two days." A police team has been tasked to trace his location from the mobile phone which he was carrying, a police officer said. The officer said Singh's mobile phone is switched off since 9.22 pm on April 22. On the basis of a CCTV footage, his last location was tracked to Dabri in southwest Delhi where he reached in an e-rickshaw, hired from near IGI airport. The actor used to carry two mobile phones. But he left one of them at his home in Delhi. He made the last call to his friend, who was supposed to pick him at the Mumbai airport, another officer said. The police teams have scanned his financial transactions from his bank accounts and credit cards. They show that the last transaction was of Rs 14,000, which he withdrew from one of his bank accounts on the day he went missing. The police officer said Singh's financial condition was not sound, as he had several loans and dues on him. At least a dozen police teams, including the Crime Branch and Special Cell, are working to locate him, the officer said. Another officer said Singh is a follower of a sect for which he used to visit a meditation centre in Delhi's Chattarpur. The police have taken the statements of the sect's followers who are known to him. The officer further said the actor had once showed his interest in going to the Himalayas for meditation. The teams of Delhi Police have taken the statements of over 50 people in Delhi and Mumbai. The police teams have also visited some states like Haryana, Punjab and Uttarakhand to get any lead in connection with the case, the officer said. Singh's father, relatives and friends are praying for his well-being. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal says another 1200 ICU beds will be available in the national capital, but it will take at least a week

New Delhi, Jul 1 () The South Delhi district administration on Wednesday requested Reliance Jio to augment data connectivity at the 10,000-bed Sardar Patel COVID Centre in Radha Soami Satsang Beas campus in Chattarpur area here. The centre is being set up by the Delhi government for treating mild and asymptomatic coronavirus patients. It will also serve as a treatment centre for people who are asymptomatic but cannot afford home isolation. "We request Reliance Jio to support us under their CSR initiative to augment the data connectivity of the prestigious 10,000-bedded Sardar Patel COVID Care Centre. We value your support during this COVID-19 pandemic," South Delhi District Magistrate B M Mishra said. The centre, which is likely to be among the largest facilities of its kind in the world at full capacity, will be 1,700 feet long, 700 feet wide and have 200 enclosures with 50 beds each. GVS SRY

Jain told IANS that all contacts of Covid-19 patients infected with the mutant strain of novel coronavirus had been tested by the <keyword id="26362" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Government">government</keyword> but none was found infected. "We have tested all contacts of the patients with UK strain infection. Noone has been found infected, apart from those 38 admitted in the LNJP," he said. IANS had reported that the number of persons suspected to be infected with the new strain had risen to 38 in Delhi after three more persons, including returnees from the UK and a contact, were found corona positive during a surveillance drive on Wednesday. All 38 patients are kept in isolation at the Lok Nayak Jaiprakash (LNJP) Hospital. Of them, 17 are UK returnees while remaining are their contacts. "All the patients found infected with the new variant have been isolated in different rooms of a special ward designated for suspected patients or those found infected with the new variant," Dr Suresh Kumar, Medical Director of Delhi government-run hospital had said. Besides, the AAP government has quarantined around 200 people, who either returned from the UK within a month or are in contact with those travellers found positive, at two facilities in Aerocity and Chattarpur. The UT government has found over 14,000 passengers who arrived at the <keyword id="89772" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indira-Gandhi-International-Airport">Indira Gandhi International Airport</keyword> (IGIA) since November 25. Of them, around 4,000 were found to be residing in Delhi. The Delhi government has designated 2,000-bed LNJP as the nodal centre for isolation of persons suspected to carry the new variant of Covid-19. Meanwhile, the Centre said on Thursday that five more cases of mutant coronavirus strain from the UK have been detected in the country, taking the total tally of such cases to 25, based on genome sequencing of positive samples released by the Indian Sars-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) labs. The samples have so far been sequenced in seven of the 10 designated labs across the country, with seven samples testing positive in NIMHANS, Bengaluru; two in CCMB, Hyderabad; five in NIV, Pune; eight in NCDC, Delhi; two in IGIB, Delhi and one in NIBG, Kalyani (West Bengal). No contacts of UK returnees in Delhi with new variant of COVID-19 have tested positive so far

New Delhi, Apr 7 () The 21-day lockdown has led to subtle behavioral changes in stray dogs and has plunged them into a state of confusion, animal behaviorists in Delhi say. Akansha Yadav -- founder of Pawtricks, a canine training and consulting firm - said there was not a behavioral change in all the dogs, but it was possible in specific categories. "Because people are not on the streets anymore and there is scarcity of food, dogs may start competing with one another for food," Yadav said. The animal behaviorist said it was a difficult time for dogs, which are used to human attention, especially those in markets where people pet them and give them food on the go. India is currently under a 21-day lockdown since March 25, with only essential services exempted, to contain the novel coronavirus pandemic, which has claimed over 75,800 lives globally and afflicted over 13.5-lakh people across 183 countries.Animal rights campaigner Sangeeta Dogra said stray dogs in her locality had left the area due to the lockdown. "They are clueless and confused as to why there are no humans on the roads," she said. However, Adnan Khan, who runs a dog training school in Chattarpur, said stray dogs were scavengers and not predators, adding that they might kill a cat, but they would not eat it. "Hostility towards humans builds up when there are too many people around not letting them scavenge. It leads to frustration among dogs," he said. Stray dogs are much happier in areas where there is less human intervention, like villages and countryside, Khan said. "Right now, there are no cars, there are no people to shoo them away, to beat them up," Khan said. "So, they are lot more comfortable and happier. Experts say lockdown leading to subtle behavioral changes in stray dogs

New Delhi, Jun 24 () The Indo-Tibetan Border Police on Wednesday took over a 10,000 bed capacity COVID-19 care center in Delhi, officials said. A team of officials from the border guarding force visited the Radha Soami Beas facility and held discussions with the Delhi government and other stakeholders who will be partners in running the center. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had on Tuesday said the center has been entrusted to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). "The force took over the COVID-19 care center at Radha Soami Beas in Chattarpur, New Delhi on Wednesday. "The home ministry had nominated ITBP as the nodal agency to provide doctors and team of other professionals to this center as requested by the Delhi government," an ITBP officer said. It is expected that a 2,000 bed facility will be operational at the center from June 26, another officer said. The total bed capacity may go upto 10,200. This will be the largest COVID-19 care center in the national capital as well as the country, he said. More than 1,000 doctors of the ITBP and other Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and 2,000 paramedics and security staff are expected to be deployed at this facility, the officer said. The south Delhi district administration will provide administrative support to the center, he said. The ITBP was the first organisation in the country to have created a 1,000 bed quarantine center for coronavirus affected people. The center in Chhawla area of south-west Delhi has treated about 1,200 people, including 42 foreigners who were brought to India on special evacuation flights from Wuhan in China and Italy, after the COVID-19 outbreak few months back. The facility is still operational and is taking care of those ITBP troops who are joining back to work after the countrywide lockdown. It also created the first standard operating procedures for management of the pandemic among the various CAPFs and central and state police organisations. The about 90,000 personnel strong force is primarily tasked to guard the 3,488 km long Line of Actual Control with China. A good number of its troops along with Army personnel are at present engaged in fortifying Indian defences with the People's Liberation Army of the neighbouring country in the Ladakh area. NES SRY

Nestled in the Dhan Mill compound in Chattarpur, Delhi, the Space10 office is a spacious enough to host public programmes with an open lab environment for researchers, innovators and experts. We caught up with Simon Caspersen, co-founder of Space10 as he spoke about why the lab is popping up in Delhi for six months but hopes to stay on longer. “We have come to learn from India, gain new perspectives and collaborate with Indian experts, creatives and specialists in multiple fields and together experiment, and prototype new solutions, that can enable a better everyday life for people and planet,” said Caspersen. As a research and design lab, Space10 explores the challenges that the human race faces and hunt for solutions. It was based out of Copenhagen for four years now, they have had short stints in New York, Nairobi, London, Shanghai and Singapore. But this is the first time they have set up a big space in another country for six months. “In Delhi, we are going to be open for six months and then we will evaluate. We have an open lab where we will collaborate with people to develop our projects. In Copenhagen, we keep the team as small as possible but when we look at our projects sometimes there are 700 people working across projects,” said Caspersen. They will also host public programmes where partners can discuss issues under one roof. They also help bring together a network for people from different projects. In Copenhagen, they are currently running themes like – solar energy, open fabrication (open source design), natural interfaces and Artificial Intelligence and shared living where they are rethinking the way future cities are going to be designed, built and financed. They are also going to work with Indian researchers for the same issues. “In India, we are doing a research project on electricity. We are exploring the barriers of electricity access in India,” said Caspersen. Being completely funded by IKEA, Space10 works for them and helps influence their future business plans.

(Eds: Updating)        New Delhi, May 7 () The national capital on Thursday reported its highest spike in coronavirus cases in a day with 448 fresh cases and the total number of COVID-19 patients nearly touched 6,000, a health bulletin said.       According to the bulletin, the total number of coronavirus cases now stands at 5,980. With one more fresh fatality, the death toll has risen to 66.         This week has recorded the highest spike in coronavirus cases in Delhi – May 6 reported 428 cases and May 3 reported 427.         The day also saw 389 recoveries, the highest so far in a single day.   Over 1,000 migrant workers from Madhya Pradesh, stranded in the national capital for nearly 40 days due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown, left for their state in a special Shramik train.             Health Minister Satyendra Jain said the government was in constant touch with all the states regarding sending the migrant labourers and other stranded people to their homes.             A railway official said the second Shramik train carrying stranded migrant labourers will leave Delhi for Bihar on Friday.              "First train carrying 1,050 migrants from Delhi left for Chattarpur, MP, today at 8 pm. A series of such trains would be carrying migrants to diff parts of India in the coming days," Delhi transport minister Kailash Gahlot tweeted.            After chaos outside liquor shops for four days, the AAP government has launched an e-token service for those buying liquor. The decision has been taken to encourage people to avoid standing in long queues in violation of social distancing norms.                While applying for an e-token, the buyer's name and phone number will be required and the e-coupon will be sent at the registered mobile number. Through the e-token the person will be allowed to buy liquor from a nearby shop at an allotted time.            The migrant workers leaving for Madhya Pradesh were screened by the authorities. Around 10,000 migrant workers are staying in government-run shelters in the national capital.            Carrying their belongings, the migrants arrived at the railway station in over 70 buses arranged by the Delhi government to board the special train for Madhya Pradesh.             After alighting from the buses, the passengers stood in circular rings some feet apart from each other outside the station in accordance with social-distancing norms.            They were allowed in the station in batches and railway officials guided them to the train.             On the platform also, authorities have marked white circular rings for the passengers to stand at a safe distance from each other.            "I was at a shelter home in Roop Nagar for the last eight days. I polish marble slabs for a living. I will come back when things get back to normal," said Balram Kumar, one of the outbound migrants.            Thousands of migrant labourers across the country were stranded after the nationwide lockdown was announced due to the coronavirus pandemic.             The Railways started the migrant special services from May 1 and has since then operated 171 such trains.             Of the total number of coronavirus cases in the national capital, more than one-third have been reported between May 1 and 7.             Jain said the growth rate of COVID-19 cases in Delhi was around 8 per cent till Wednesday. Earlier the rate was 20 per cent, then it dropped to 15 per cent and further dropped to 12 per cent.            "Delhi government is monitoring the situation 24×7 to ensure that the virus does not spread further. Compared to western countries the situation in India is much better," he said.            The total number of containment zones in Delhi are 83, while 17 have been de-contained.              Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced an exgratia of Rs 1 crore to the family of Delhi Police constable Amit Kumar who died of coronavirus.            "Amit ji did not care for his life and kept serving us Delhi people. He got infected with corona and passed away. I pay homage to his sacrifice on behalf of all Delhi people. An ex gratia of Rs one crore will be given to his family," Kejriwal said in a tweet.             The 31-year-old constable, who hailed from Sonipat, was posted at Bharat Nagar Police Station in northwest Delhi, police said. The constable is survived by his wife and a 3-year-old son, he added.            East Delhi MP Gautam Gambhir said his Gautam Gambhir Foundation will take care of the education of the constable's son.            "The administration failed him. The system failed him. Delhi failed him. We can't bring Constable Amit back, but I assure that I will look after his child like my own. GGF will take care of his complete education. #DelhiFailedAmit #CoronaWarriorsIndia," Gambhir tweeted.             Kumar's last rites were held at the Punjabi Bagh crematorium. Coronavirus cases in national capital nearly 6,000; first train carrying migrants to MP leaves Delhi

New Delhi, Jul 9 () The COVID-19 situation in the national capital has shown improvement in recent days in both recovery and doubling rates, the Union Home Ministry said on Thursday, while 2,187 fresh cases were reported and the city's coronavirus tally rose to 1,07,051. According to the Delhi government's health bulletin issued on Thursday, 45 fresh fatalities were reported taking the death toll due to coronavirus to 3,258. The active cases stood at 21,567, the lowest in the last 28 days (since June 12). Further, 4,027 people recovered, according to the bulletin, the highest in the last 19 days (since June 21). It said 82,226 people have recovered so far, pushing the recovery rate to 76 per cent. The national recovery rate stands at 62 per cent. Addressing a press conference, Home Ministry Joint Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava said there were 23,552 active cases in Delhi. She, however, said the recovery rate in the national capital was about 72 per cent and the doubling rate has increased to 29.7 days or about 30 days. She was referring to the figures released by the Delhi health department on Wednesday. Srivastava said the ministry has been holding regular meetings with the state governments in the Delhi-NCR region for improving the pandemic situation. In these meetings, national-level experts also participate and some important decisions have been take, she said. These include controlling the cost of COVID treatment in private hospitals, arrangement of additional beds in the national capital, increasing the number of tests using rapid antigen technology, careful demarcation of containment zones, contact tracing of all affected persons, effective use of Information Technology systems and AIIMS Delhi consultancy telemedicine facility now available to all COVID hospitals in the country for clinical management of the disease. "Joint efforts have improved the situation in Delhi. Rapid antigen technology is being used on a large scale which has increased testing capability," she said. With the Rapid Antigen tests, testing has been significantly ramped up in the national capital. "Till July 8, over 6.79 lakh tests have been done which translates into 35,780 tests per million population. Now every day over 20,000 tests are being done but in spite of increase in tests, active cases are under control," Srivastava said. The official said the number of hospital beds available for COVID care in Delhi have been increased. "On June 1, there were 4,456 hospital beds available. Now 15,096 beds are available. On July 8, there were 10,237 vacant beds which is about 68 percent of the availability," she said. Srivastava said the Sardar Patel COVID care centre at Chattarpur here has emerged as a game changer as provision of a good facility for Delhi residents was ensured within 12 days, setting an example for the entire country. In a related development, the Delhi government-run Guru Tegh Bahadur hospital is aiming to increase the number of ICU beds to 500 over the next two weeks, an official said. There are 1,500 beds in the hospital and around 75 of them are Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds. "Over the next two weeks, we are going to increase the number of ICU beds to 500," Vinay Bhushan, Nodal Officer of GTB Hospital said. The hospital administration has also arranged 45 tablets with which patients can talk to their family members over video call. A tender has also been floated to install television units in each ward. Earlier this week, Kejriwal had said the Delhi government has ramped up the installation of ICU beds in Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty (RGSS) hospital from 45 to 200, and in LNJP hospital from 60 to 180, which are both COVID dedicated hospitals in Delhi. Srivastava said Unlock 2.0 directions have been implemented from July 1 and stage-wise permission was being given for activities being allowed outside containment zones. However, the lockdown will be strictly followed in containment zones till July 31. "Now all economic activities are permitted. Complying with national directives has become paramount like masks, social distancing, etc," she said, adding that the ministry is keeping a close watch on the implementation of the national directives. Meanwhile, the authorities in several districts were busy chalking out a strategy to screen daily wagers, domestic workers, auto drivers and food suppliers for COVID-19. The east Delhi administration decided to use its 26 dispensaries for the exercise. An official said in central Delhi district, sub-divisional magistrates have been asked to prepare a database of such people in their respective areas with the help of municipal corporations and traders associations. Strategies are expected to be chalked out by Friday in districts like north, northwest and south. On Wednesday, the Delhi government revised its 'COVID Response Plan' and would enlist and screen for the novel coronavirus daily wagers, domestic workers, auto drivers and food suppliers. In another related development, a 53-year-old assistant sub-inspector of Delhi Police died due to coronavirus at a hospital here. Jeevan Singh, posted at Delhi Police's Special branch, was attached with the Motor Transport section of the department, they said. Around 2,000 Delhi Police personnel have tested positive for the virus, out of which 1,300 have resumed their duties after recovery.
