As of September 2024, <keyword id="4484133" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE-Emerge" source="Orion">NSE Emerge</keyword> has 147 listed participants, while <keyword id="1885131" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE-SME" source="Orion">BSE SME</keyword> has 155 market makers. Mounting an SME’s IPO is comparatively less stringent than their mainboard counterparts, as far as regulations are concerned since their DRHPs (draft red herring prospectus) are not filed with SEBI. So, wouldn’t a lenient treatment make them inherently riskier? Most SME IPOs need a minimum investment of Rs 1,00,000 or more, as opposed to mainboard IPOs, where you can buy one lot of shares for anywhere between Rs 14,000-15,000. Even the minimum trading lot size for SME shares is about 10,000. In short, you’d have to potentially empty your pockets to invest in an SME IPO. And still, there’s no guarantee that the listing will fill your wallets. For all you know, your pockets before and after the IPO is listed might stay the same - EMPTY! There's also the question of whether or not these SMEs are able to maintain their listing day mojo, or do they just fizzle out thereafter? Data from Prime Database highlights more instances of the latter. As of August 2024, about 166 SME IPOs had made it to the exchanges. Around 72 of them, or close to 50%, could not sustain their momentum going ahead, and were trading below their listing day prices. Consider this. The post listing gains of Medicamen Organics, whose IPO came out in June 2024, earned its investors massive listing gains of over 300%, by listing at Rs 137.85, significantly higher than its price issue price, which was set between Rs 32-34. But as of October 1, 2024, the stock was trading at Rs 64.2. Talk about falls. Additionally, risks of pump-and-dump, and illiquidity, among others makes SME IPOs dangerous See, you're largely venturing into unknown, pitch-dark territories, without much light to guide you. In order to survive the drought, startups are taking unit economics more seriously, which has been illustrated through the series of mass layoffs that have occurred this year," said <keyword id="520013" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="neha-singh" source="Orion">Neha Singh</keyword>, Co-Founder, Tracxn. "As the macro environment gets tougher, we can expect some excellent business models to outshine the rest with high levels of innovation and frugality. That's because the company is suffering from supply chain disruptions that have been exacerbated in recent months."Our senior leadership team is spending a lot of time with our semiconductor suppliers, and making sure we're securing the right allocation. And that allocation, as we start to get into higher production rates, especially in the back half of this year, is where we see risk," Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said in the company's earnings call.Soaring nickel prices don't help Rivian either, as the metal is a key ingredient for electric vehicle batteries. A short-squeeze sparked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine sent nickel prices <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/nickel-price-russia-ukraine-war-short-squeeze-lme-suspends-trading-2022-3">soaring upwards of 250% to more than $100,000 per ton.</a>Scaringe said while he hopes the surge in nickel prices are temporary, the company is developing different battery solutions that are less dependent on nickel to hedge against the higher prices.Wall Street wasn't impressed with Rivian's fourth-quarter results. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives lowered his price target on the company to $60 from $130 in a Friday note. "Since its IPO in late 2021 the Rivian story has been a bad episode out of the Twilight Zone," he said, adding that its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rivian-price-increase-r1t-r1s-pre-order-customer-backlash-2022-3">recent price increase blunder</a> only agitates the situation. Therefore, the smaller businesses will get a better price for the inputs, and be able to protect their profit margin. China has been increasingly wary of the global surge in prices of key raw materials used in industry. Since the pandemic has curbed the consumer’s purchasing power, companies have not been able to pass on the rising cost of commodities, and therefore, the profit margins are getting squeezed. Last week, the cost of raw materials, measured by the producer price index in China, hit the highest level in 12 years. The policy measure will go beyond stopping commodity imports. The state firms will need the inputs to keep their business running. China’s National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration will soon <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QUS0XZT1UM1B">release</a> state stockpiles of metals including copper, <keyword id="126663" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="aluminum">aluminum</keyword> and zinc, instead of relying on global suppliers. The metals will be sold in batches to fabricators and manufacturers. China has been the world’s biggest guzzler of commodities for many years. However, in recent times, the world’s second largest economy has shifted its focus to domestic consumption instead of being an exporter to the world at large.
