The highest offered bagged by these freshers stood at over ₹30 Lakh. As many as 130 students received job offers at SRCC. <br /><br />“We haven't seen an overall impact of the slowdown in placements. The number of companies coming has more or less remained the same since last year, however the number of students that were made an offer to have increased,” Kanika K Ahuja, placement in-charge at LSR told ET.<br /><br />The students who get admission to these Delhi University-affiliated colleges have to score over 95% in the 12th grade — due to high cut-offs. Among the top recruiters were Gartner, EY, PwC, Deloitte, KPMG, Samsung and Accenture. This includes first-time recruiters as well. <br /><br /><a href="https://www.dupost.co.in/du-blog/2020/du-delhi-university-placement-2019-highest-average-salary-package/">According to the Central Placement Cell (CPC)</a> of DU, Stephen’s college bagged the highest offer at ₹19 lpa from the Boston Consulting Group. On the other hand, <keyword id="311892" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shaheed-Sukhdev-College-of-Business-Studies">Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies</keyword> (SCBS), which is ranked as the second best undergraduate b-school in India, bagged 106 offers at an average compensation of over ₹7 lakh. The highest offer stood at ₹18 lakh per annum.<br /><br />The average compensation at other DU colleges fluctuated between ₹6 lakh to ₹10 lakh per annum. While the overall average salaries in India went up by 45% for undergraduate students. This is despite the economic downturn in the country. <br /><br /><strong>The growing trend of summer placements</strong><br /><br />The growing trend of summer placements and pre-placement offers too might have had an effect on the increased interest of recruiters. Companies like Deutsche Bank, Citi Bank are also banking on summer placements to assess talent, thereby extending pre-placement offers.<br /><br />At SCBS, Goldman Sachs visited the campus to hire interns for their investment banking division. Delhi University students bag job offers that pay as much as ₹31 lakh per annum

One particularly disturbing image showed two children sleeping on mattresses on the floor inside what appeared to be a cage.</p><p>A number of prominent liberals - and even a former Obama administration official - shared the photos in outrage, mistakenly believing they depicted the Trump administration's treatment of immigrant children who were forcibly separated from their parents.</p><p>Jon Favreau, who worked as a speechwriter for former President Barack Obama, tweeted, "This is happening right now, and the only debate that matters is how we force our government to get these kids back to their families as fast as humanly possible."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Associated Press/Ross D. But by that point, critics had already rushed to accuse him of concealing Obama's own harsh immigration tactics while condemning Trump's.</p><p>Favreau said in a <a href="https://twitter.com/jonfavs/status/1001504737013809152" target="_blank" rel="noopener">series of tweets</a> that he made a "mistake" by not checking the date of the photos before sharing them on Twitter. He explained that the photos were taken in 2014, when the Obama administration faced "an influx of unaccompanied minors who showed up at the border, fleeing violence from Central America."</p><p>He added that the pictures had been taken while the government was trying to "move those children out of those shelters as fast as humanly possible and connect them with their parents, most of whom were already in the United States."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Associated Press/Ross D. "It was not an Obama policy. It was not a Bush policy. It was not a Clinton policy. That is a fact. And that is what all of us - Democrats and Republicans - should want changed as soon as humanly possible."</p><p>The firestorm over the photos came amid several other immigration-related controversies that erupted over the weekend. "I don't understand what you're going to get out of it. The idea that some guy crossing the border committed a crime returned and came back all undetected is very remote."</p><p>The proposed Trump administration policy will likely draw pushback from immigrant advocates and civil liberties groups who argue the federal government should not collect that type of personal information from individuals without being suspected of a crime.</p><p>Currently, the DNA Fingerprint Act of 2005 allows federal agencies to DNA test any individual in their custody. Obama built them."</p><h2>Cages under the Obama administration</h2><p>The Trump administration has often come under scrutiny for using the cages to detain migrants, though a lesser-known detail is that those same cages have been used for years, albeit under different circumstances.</p><p>Last summer, for instance, images went viral showing young migrant children lying sprawled on flimsy mattresses, caged behind the metal fencing. Trump says 'Obama built the cages' that his administration has been using to lock up migrant children

Almost 60% of teens in 1979 had a job, compared to 34% in 2015.</strong></li><li><strong>For some teens, it's partially thanks to their ultra-stressful <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/school">school</a> schedule.</strong></li></ul><p>Kendra Lodewyk, 16, can't talk to her mom about what it's like to be a high school student in 2018.</p><p>Not because of cell phones or Snapchat or Tide Pod consumption - but because Lodewyk, whose school day starts at 6:25 a.m. and who gets four hours of sleep a night, has practically every minute of her days scheduled for the next two years.</p><p>"She was a scholar, she was very intelligent, but she didn't have as much as we had going on," said Lodewyk, who lives in the Central Michigan town of Bay City, as she completed her Algebra II homework on a Tuesday evening. "I don't know, it's just different."</p><p>One of the biggest differences between the lives of today's teens and their parents': a lack of a job. Lodewyk doesn't have a part-time job and she won't be getting one this summer. Even with school out, Lodewyk said she and her friends too busy for a summer gig.</p><p>That's thanks in part to the recent introduction of summer homework, which accompanies many of the Advanced Placement and honors classes at her school. Before her sophomore year, she had two books to read and annotate and two papers. This summer is certain to be worse.</p><p>And there's a bevy of extracurriculars that lure teens across America, even in the summer. "Those seem more necessary to me than a job would," 15-year-old Jake Zucker, who lives in the wealthy Boston suburb of Brookline, told Business Insider. "They sort of enrich my learning in a way that potential <keyword id="6354910" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="careers">careers</keyword> for a 15-year-old wouldn't necessarily do." </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Courtesy of Kendra Lodewyk</span></p><p class="caption">Kendra Lodewyk, pictured, said her schedule is too hectic for her to get a job. But even some of the teens who need jobs are having trouble getting them.</p><p>Low-income teens are locked out of work because they don't have the sort of connections that middle or upper class students have: the neighborhood parent who can shell out $10 an hour for a babysitter, or the family friend who needs an assistant at their law firm, Paul Harrington, professor of labor markets and policy at Drexel University, told Business Insider.</p><p>"It's much tougher for those kids to get hooked up because no one is brokering them in," Harrington said. "This tremendously important experience of working is not available to these kiddos."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider/Andy Kiersz, data from Bureau of Labor Statistics</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Many of the jobs that these teens would take are being filled by unemployed college graduates, older workers or those born outside the US, according to <a href="https://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/2017/article/teen-labor-force-participation-before-and-after-the-great-recession.htm">a 2017 report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics</a>. </p><p>Teen employment has been steadily decreasing since 1979, with a steeper decrease yet since 2000.  In 1995, two-thirds of teens got summer jobs, according to <a href="https://t.umblr.com/redirect?z=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bls.gov%2Fopub%2Fmlr%2F2017%2Farticle%2Fteen-labor-force-participation-before-and-after-the-great-recession.htm&amp;t=ZjU3NDFmZWE3OTFmMmVkMThiYmNhNjJjY2QxNmQzMjgwNDVlYTcxYixhM3d2dXB6MA%3D%3D&amp;b=t%3AqjOzvfOPb8MsJQkhKybvbQ&amp;p=https%3A%2F%2Fbipremacktest.tumblr.com%2Fpost%2F172059836383%2Fall-pitches&amp;m=1">data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics</a>. Around 43% did in 2016.</p><p>Year-round teen employment has also tanked. Employment among teens in 2015, the last year for which data is available, is down 34% since 2000.</p><p>It peaked in 1979, when 58% of teens had a job.</p><h2>In the 2010s, almost half of teens were enrolled in school during the summer. Only 10% were in 1985.</h2><p>One of the key reasons for the surge in teen unemployment is the push towards more schooling. A bachelor's degree has become a requirement rather than an option for many desirable jobs, and college-bound students must take a certain course load to be considered for admission.</p><p>This renewed focus is "a large part" of why labor rates are so low, Terri Morisi, a branch chief at the Bureau of Labor Statistics who researches teen and youth employment trends, told Business Insider.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider/Andy Kiersz, data from Bureau of Labor Statistics</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Students are in more rigorous classes than ever, according to data from the Department of Education. <a href="https://nces.ed.gov/programs/digest/d15/tables/dt15_225.30.asp">Nearly a third</a> of high school graduates from 2009 took three years of hard sciences compared to 11% in 1982. And 40% of those in the Class of 2009 graduated with three or more years of foreign language, compared to <a href="https://www.childstats.gov/americaschildren16/tables/ed3c.asp">15% in 1982</a>.</p><p>That carries over into the summer, as well. Along with a slew of <a href="https://www.collegechoice.net/rankings/best-pre-college-summer-programs/">admissions-only academic summer camps</a> and standardized test preparation, there's summer homework.</p><p>For this school year in Chino High School in Chino, California, <a href="https://www.chino.k12.ca.us/site/handlers/filedownload.ashx?moduleinstanceid=23293&amp;dataid=57536&amp;FileName=Biology.pdf">students enrolled in Advanced Placement Biology</a> had to read chapter one of their textbook, take "Cornell notes," make flash cards of all key terms, summarize a scientific article, write their own scientific article, and conduct an experiment on plant leaf lengths, summarized in a lab report. This was due the first day of class with a test on the second day.</p><p>"Don't start behind… get it done!" reads the summer homework packet.</p><p>For students taking more than one Advanced Placement course, their summer calendars quickly fill up. As for Lodewyk, she's stressed.</p><p>"School is more 'Can I get through this?' rather than what I'm learning and what will benefit me in the future," Lodewyk said. "It's like, 'Can I survive this year?' That's what it feels like. It's hard."</p><h2>Jobs for teens pay worse today than they did in 1979, and teens say school is more important.</h2><p>Zucker, the 15-year-old from Brookline, has never looked for a job and probably won't do so anytime soon. He's too busy with school, summer camp, running, the school newspaper, and school plays.</p><p>Where Zucker lives, he said, "there's more of an emphasis placed on education and the time you spend there is seen as having more reward. There's less of an emphasis on individual work to get things."</p><p>The pay from a summer job wouldn't buy him much, anyway. In 2014, according to the BLS, teens' <a href="https://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/2017/images/data/morisi-fig7.stm">median hourly wage was $8.43</a>. But in 1979, when teens reached peak employment, the inflation-adjusted wage was $9.42. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider/Andy Kiersz, data from Bureau of Labor Statistics</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>But <a href="http://www.stephaniecoontz.com/">Stephanie Coontz</a>, the Director of Public Education at <a href="https://contemporaryfamilies.org/">the Council on Contemporary Families</a>, maintains there's a sort of intangible quality that working young provides. It provides a rare chance for teens to interact with adults outside of their family and school.</p><p>"It taught young people the ropes of workplace," Coontz said. "There was this socialization into the workforce and working with other people."</p><h2>It's yet another symbol that this generation is growing up more slowly than the ones before it.</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Jim Mone/AP</span></p><p class="caption">Teens are reaching traditional markers of adulthood more slowly than their parents.</p></div><p></p></div></div>The falling labor rate is in line with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/generation-z-sex-alcohol-driving-study-2017-9">other studies</a> showing that Gen Zs are growing up more slowly. Once in their teen years, those born in the early 1990s to the mid-2000s have been shown to be less likely to have sex, go on dates, try drugs, learn to drive, and other markers of adolescence. </p><p>"There's a more competitive atmosphere in terms of getting into college, so people don't really have the luxury of doing other things, whether that's a job or partying and drinking," Zucker told Business Insider.</p><p>Coontz said this generation hasn't had the chance to experiment with the "virtues and vices of adulthood." They also haven't had the practical experiences: negotiating with an employer, budgeting a minimum wage, monitoring rebellious children as a babysitter, learning how to pack a grocery bag without crushing the eggs.</p><p>A lack of employment is worse yet for teens who won't attend a four-year college or those who are from low-income families, Harrington said. Their life success is based on what they do from ages 16 to 24, but a quarter of young people in Philadelphia, where Harrington resides, aren't in school or working. </p><p>"The life path of these kids is really dented," Harrington told Business Insider. "It's going to take a lot for them to really recover."</p><p>As for driving, <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/15389588.2012.696755">the proportion of 16-year-olds</a> with a driver's license has fallen from 46% in 1983 to 25% in 2016.</p><p>Happily, Lodewyk reported that she's taking her driver's test in two weeks. She was too busy before. "I'm 16 and a half and I'm <em>just</em> being able to achieve this life goal of driving," Lodewyk said.</p><p>The problem for Lodewyk, once she has her own car, is that she won't be able to do her summer homework while her parents drive her to acting camp or voice lessons. "During car rides, I'm usually studying, annotating, and doing some types of outlines."</p><p><em>Are you a teenager with a story about school or work? Reports about what's happening to children and families who arrive at the US-Mexico border have shocked many, from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sarah-huckabee-sanders-family-separation-border-zero-tolerance-trump-2018-6">White House reporters</a> to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/14/us/trump-immigration-religion.html">conservative religious leaders</a>.</p><p>A Honduran woman told attorneys that her <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/infant-took-while-migrant-mother-breastfeeding-zero-tolerance-policy-2018-6">daughter was pulled from her</a> as she was breastfeeding. After being <span>separated from his wife and 3-year-old son, a Honduran</span><span> man <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/migrant-father-suicide-family-separation-trump-zero-tolerance-border-policy-2018-6">took his own life in a Texas jail cell</a>.</span></p><p>Colleen Kraft, the president of the American Academy for Pediatrics, <a href="http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-kraft-border-separation-suit-20180503-story.html">recently described</a> seeing a blotchy-faced toddler sobbing and pounding on a playmat, terrified because she'd been forcibly separated from her mother.</p><p>"We knew what was wrong, but we were powerless to help," Kraft wrote.</p><p>At issue in these accounts is a policy enacted by the US Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice, which Attorney General Jeff Sessions has described as "zero tolerance."</p><p>US authorities are now detaining and prosecuting anyone who attempts to cross the border illegally <span>- even those seeking asylum because they're fleeing violence, some of whom are being <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/at-the-us-border-asylum-seekers-fleeing-violence-are-told-to-come-back-later/2018/06/12/79a12718-6e4d-11e8-afd5-778aca903bbe_story.html?utm_term=.24a001c594d6">blocked from reaching official ports of entry</a>. Within families, the parents are charged with a crime but </span>children are not, which leads them to be separated. Almost <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ap-ap-exclusive-about-2k-minors-separated-from-families-2018-6">2,000 children were taken from their families</a> between <span>April 19 and May 31</span> as a result of the policy. In some cases, the kids are too young to speak.</p><p>Sessions <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/parents-separated-from-children-in-trump-zero-tolerance-immigration-policy-2018-5">described this policy as a deterrent</a>. "If you are smuggling a child, then we will prosecute you, and that child will be separated from you as required by law," he said in a speech to law-enforcement officials in Scottsdale, Arizona. "If you don't like that, then don't smuggle children over our border."</p><p>But this policy could cause irreversible harm and psychological damage for the rest of people's lives, according to experts. Some consequences could even be passed on to future generations.</p><p>Forced family separation has been condemned as harmful, inhumane, and counter to accepted human rights by many groups, including the <a href="http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/early/2017/03/09/peds.2017-0483">American Academy of Pediatrics</a>, the <a href="https://www.psychiatry.org/newsroom/news-releases/apa-statement-opposing-separation-of-children-from-parents-at-the-border">American Psychiatric Association</a>, and the <a href="https://apnews.com/133271c91ef746bc83a43ba8e31aad1d">United Nations human rights office</a>.</p><p>"The administration's policy of separating children from their families as they attempt to cross into the United States without documentation is not only needless and cruel, it threatens the mental and physical health of both the children and their caregivers," the <a href="http://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2018/05/separating-immigrant-families.aspx">American Psychological Association</a> said in a statement.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Administration for Children and Families at the US Department of Health and Human Services</span></p><p class="caption">Supplies are stored at a Brownsville shelter where child migrants are kept.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>'A problem of the government's own making'</h2><p>There are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/children-in-custody-trump-administration-immigration-zero-tolerance-policy-2018-5">more than 10,000 unaccompanied children</a> in US facilities and detention centers right now; some have been separated from their parents, while others arrived at the border alone. But <span>Sessions' zero-tolerance approach means that for the first time, an official policy calls for the splitting of families. According Homeland Security numbers <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ap-ap-exclusive-about-2k-minors-separated-from-families-2018-6">obtained by The Associated Press</a></span>, officials had separated 1,995 children from 1,940 adults by the end of May.</p><p>By now, more than 2,000 kids - likely freshly traumatized  - have probably been added to the US' already overwhelmed system for dealing with young immigrants.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Administration for Children and Families at the US Department of Health and Human Services</span></p><p class="caption">A mural depicting President Trump in the detention shelter in Brownsville, Texas</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Almost 1,500 boys between the ages of 10 and 17 have been crammed into one shelter inside a former Walmart in Brownsville, Texas. Jacob Soboroff, a <a href="https://twitter.com/jacobsoboroff/status/1007059954535198720">reporter who visited that facility, described</a> the boys as "incarcerated" because they were eating in shifts, had just 40 square feet of living space, and spent only two hours outside each day. <span>The Trump administration <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/migrant-children-tent-city-shelters-texas-site-zero-tolerance-family-separation-2018-6">is currently building</a> "tent cities" near the border to hold the many undocumented kids who arrive in the US.</span></p><p>"Before, their cases would have been dealt with as a family," Megan McKenna, senior director of communications at the nonprofit Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), told Business Insider. "It's a problem of the government's own making." </p><p>This isn't the first time families have been separated at the border. But now, doing so is the rule, not the exception. After families are separated, parents get dealt with by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as they are being charged with a crime. Since the children are not charged, their cases get managed by the <span>Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). In many </span>cases, families who get separated aren't given any information about where other family members are being held or how to contact each other.</p><p>"They just have no understanding of what's happening to them or when they're going to see their family again, and we can't tell them when they're going to see their parents again because we don't know either," said McKenna, whose organization tries to match children with attorneys. "It's extraordinarily damaging to the child."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP Photo/LM Otero, File</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>'Irreversible harm' </h2><p><span> <a href="https://www.uh.edu/socialwork/about/faculty-directory/j-berger-cardoso/">Jodi Berger Cardoso</a>, an assistant professor of social work at the University of Houston, researches the effects of trauma on immigrants and their children.</span></p><p><span>"What they are doing to these children and parents is inhumane," Cardoso told Business Insider. "If we just look at the research evidence, anyone can see that these tactics will have long-term consequences for children and families."</span></p><p><a href="https://www.bumc.bu.edu/busm/profile/lisa-fortuna/">Dr. Lisa Fortuna</a>, medical director for child and adolescent psychiatry at Boston Medical Center, told Business Insider that "in situations of stress, the only way that children can cope is if they have a caregiver with them that's taking care of them and that's there to protect them."</p><p>The removal of a caregiver can create acute distress that harms a child's ability to cope and self-soothe, which can lead to depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In vulnerable developing brains, that can be especially harmful.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters/Edgard Garrido</span></p><p class="caption">A child traveling with a caravan of migrants from Central America sits at a camp near the San Ysidro checkpoint.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"What we find from a neurobiological sense is that the circuitry in the brain that is a fear response can be actually harmed," Fortuna said. In other words, the parts of the brain that manage fear responses - the amygdala and hippocampus -develop differently in traumatized children.</p><p>That can alter their emotional experiences for the rest of their lives, Fortuna explained, and put a child "at higher risk for ongoing anxiety, depression, PTSD as they get older." Those factors, in turn, hurt their future educational outcomes and sense of well-being, and can cause behavioral problems. For that reason, Fortuna <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/4389587-Fortuna-Young-Center-Declaration.html">wrote in an amicus brief</a> for an ACLU case that family separation can cause "irreversible harm" for children.</p><p>Even when kids are separated from parents in a non-forceful way, <a href="https://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/abs/10.2105/AJPH.2008.150474">research suggests</a> those children have a higher risk of anxiety and depression.</p><h2>Lessons from families of the past: multi-generational damage</h2><p>Previous times in history when families were separated have illustrated these long-lasting psychological consequences.</p><p>"Historically when things have happened like this - from the literature - when you have this accumulation of trauma and you break up families, you have a direct negative impact on the children, the caregivers, and potentially intergenerational bad effects," Fortuna said.</p><p>The US and Canada have a long history of separating Native Americans from their families. <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3457652/">Researchers have linked the experience</a> of Native Americans who were pressured to relocate away from tribes and family groups in the 1950s to problems with substance abuse and depression. Depression and juvenile behavior issues even persisted through the next generation as well.</p><p>In Australia, as many as 100,000 children from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were removed from their families from the late 1800s through 1960s and placed with white families or in government institutions to assimilate them into majority culture. Data shows that <a href="https://aifs.gov.au/sites/default/files/ss%282%29.pdf">people who were forcibly separated from their families as children</a> experienced significant, long-lasting negative impacts: they were almost twice as likely to be charged with a crime as adults, 60% more likely to have alcohol use disorders, and more than twice as likely to have gambling problems.</p><p><a href="https://aifs.gov.au/sites/default/files/ss%282%29.pdf">Surveys</a> found that even the children of people who'd been separated from their parents in Australia had more than double the average risk of emotional and behavioral difficulties.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters/Edgard Garrido</span></p><p class="caption">Members of a caravan of migrants from Central America enter the United States border and customs facility, where they are expected to apply for asylum.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Using children to control parents mirrors domestic abuse behavior</h2><p>Laurie Heffron, an assistant professor of social work at St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas, works with immigrants and women who have experienced domestic and sexual violence.</p><p>She said that using children to manipulate adults' decisions - as Sessions' policy is intended to do - "is an eerie mirroring" of a "textbook strategy of people who abuse their partners."</p><p>In domestic abuse situations, one partner often uses control of children as a way to "manipulate their partner, maintain control over their partner, or coerce their partner," Heffron said. "Except now it's children being manipulated and being used as pawns to control a whole community of people, a whole population of people who are trying to seek safety." </p><p>This is particularly troubling for Heffron, since a central motivation for many of the immigrant women she's worked with has been to find a safe place to raise their children, away from violence inside or outside their home. <span style="background-color: #ffff00;"></span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Associated Press/Ross D. Franklin</span></p><p class="caption">Detainees sleep and watch television in a holding cell where hundreds of mostly Central American immigrant children are being processed and held at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Nogales Placement Center.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Compounded trauma</h2><p>In addition to the lasting negative impacts of family separation, immigrant families detained at the border face three other sources of trauma that can compound the psychological damage. </p><p>First, m<span>any of these families have already suffered hardship in their home countries, which is what caused them to leave. </span></p><p><span>"Children are being persecuted by gangs, either through forced recruitment, extortion, and or violence," Cardoso said. "Women have a high risk for interpersonal violence that includes physical and sexual violence."</span></p><p><span>Second, many immigrants encounter violence and trauma on the dangerous journey to the US.</span></p><p>"On top of whatever reason people have left their homeland... are migration-related experiences that may be oftentimes negative, which could include physical or sexual abuse or violence or exploitation or human trafficking," Heffron said.</p><p>Cardoso found in her research of one group of unaccompanied children (who hadn't been forcibly separated from parents) that those kids had experienced an average of eight traumatic life events - a clinical category that includes experiences like kidnapping, sexual assault, and witnessing violent crimes. About 60% of those kids met the criteria for PTSD and 30% for depressive disorder. The average age in that sample was 14.</p><p>And third, j<span>ail-like detention can trigger "self-harm, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, depression, traumatic stress, anxiety, et cetera," according to Heffron.</span></p><p><span>"What we know about folks who've experienced trauma is they need to feel safe," she said. "Currently we're doing the opposite of that. </span><span>Not only are people not feeling safe emotionally because they're separated from their families, they're oftentimes not feeling safe physically because of the conditions of detention. We also hear allegations and there are reports of physical maltreatment and sexual violence in immigrant detention centers."</span></p><h2>Are immigrants really being deterred?</h2><p><span>As <a href="https://supportkind.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Rolling-Back-Protections-for-Children_Timeline-final.pdf">KIND has documented</a>, the zero-tolerance policy is one of many aimed at making it harder for immigrant families to seek asylum in the US - and deter them from trying.</span></p><p>When White House Chief of Staff John Kelly was asked by NPR whether taking children from their parents to deter immigration was cruel, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/john-kelly-family-separation-policy-illegal-border-crossing-2018-5">he responded</a>: "I wouldn't put it quite that way … The children will be taken care of - put into foster care or whatever. But the big point is they elected to come illegally into the United States and this is a technique that no one hopes will be used extensively or for very long."</p><p>The research contradicts Kelly's claim that the children will be fine, and it's also unclear whether this policy works as a deterrent. So far, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-family-separation-zero-tolerance-border-arrest-totals-2018-6">reports from the border indicate</a> that it isn't deterring immigrants, since many experts say that people fleeing violence in their home countries are continuing to do so.</p><p>"We've heard from families that have said they would rather risk the plight of coming to the United States and possibly being detained than face sure harm or even death in their home countries," McKenna said. "It's a policy that's just not going to be effective because it's not addressing the core reasons of why these families and these children are coming to the United States. It's just this pervasive violence that's perpetrated by the gangs and narcotraffickers which control communities."</p><p>Family separation also violates the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which <a href="https://www.ohchr.org/EN/ProfessionalInterest/Pages/CRC.aspx">specifically states</a> that "a child shall not be separated from his or her parents against their will."</p><p>"I think we should be a society that understands that we need to take care of children. If they come to our borders and they are families, we can't harm them," Fortuna said. And if the firm's docket and 2020 schedule is any indication, it stands to add a few more.</p><p>"He can effectively present to any audience, whether it's a board or a jury or the Supreme Court," said Wayne Gross, a lawyer who has worked closely with Hueston, as far back as the 2000s when they were both prosecutors, as well as in recent years, while working in private practice. </p><p>Other colleagues pointed to a mix of boldness and media savvy, with an energy that's led him to climb mountains and ride his bike cross-country while carrying his laptop and cell phone to stay in touch with clients. </p><p>"He has a rare combination of being willing to do any work it takes to know the case as well as anyone else, but also be nimble and find a path that others haven't thought of," said Robb Adkins, a white collar defense partner at Winston &amp; Strawn, who is also a longtime friend. </p><h2>Palantir fires Boies Schiller, hires Hueston</h2><p>That reputation led Hueston to Palantir, the Peter Thiel-funded data company which had grown frustrated with delays in a trade-secrets case. At some point in 2019, it fired lawyers at Boies Schiller Flexner - the firm founded by famed trial attorney David Boies - and brought Hueston in to supercharge the case. </p><p>Palantir, founded in 2003, sells software and analytics tools to US government agencies. Immigration and Customs Enforcement <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/activist-group-targets-palantir-over-controversial-ice-raid-2019-10">was reported to have used Palantir as part of a immigration crackdown under President Donald Trump.</a></p><p>The secretive company was last valued at $20 billion, and there's been much speculation about when it might finally pursue an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/palantir-reportedly-seeking-private-funding-delaying-ipo-2019-9">initial public offering</a>. </p><p>One of the biggest legal issues currently facing the company is a longstanding dispute with an early investor, Marc Abramowitz, who had a falling out in 2015 with CEO Alexander Karp.</p><p>Abramowitz says Palantir initially blocked him from selling $60 million of shares and <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-palantir-technologies-lawsuit/palantir-ordered-to-open-books-to-investor-seeking-u-s-fraud-probe-idUSKCN1G62NK">is investigating possible fraud at the company</a>, while Palantir says Abramowitz stole trade secrets and used them to set up a competing business.</p><p>After three years in court, including back-and-forth deliberations about the nature of trade secrets Abramowitz is alleged to have misappropriated, there has been no discovery conducted against Abramowitz, even as a June 2020 trial looms ahead. </p><p>In late December, Hueston filed a motion in California court pursuing discovery against Abramowitz, and referenced a new claim he added under RICO - a racketeering law often cited by prosecutors when going after organized crime, and a more aggressive accusation than trade secret misappropriation.</p><p>Boies Schiller did not respond to requests for comment about Hueston's involvement. Neither did attorneys at Skadden who are representing Abramowitz. </p><h2>Hueston advises Elon Musk </h2><p>In February, Hueston represented Elon Musk when the billionaire entrepreneur got into hot water with the Securities and Exchange Commission for tweeting what the securities regulator said was fraudulent information about Tesla's business.</p><p>Musk had already entered into a settlement with the SEC for tweeting the words "funding secured" in August 2018, which suggested to many observers that he could take Tesla private at $420 a share. The SEC called those tweets misleading, and a go-private deal never happened. </p><p>As part of the SEC settlement, Musk forfeited his role as chair of the Tesla board for three years, paid $20 million, and agreed to have his tweeting monitored by lawyers.</p><p>Then, months later, another tweet - this time, inaccurate sales projections which he later corrected - provoked the SEC to file another legal action against Musk, claiming he was in violation of the settlement.</p><p>That's when Hueston was called in to iron things out. He argued that Musk had been perfectly cooperative with the SEC, despite his view that the Twitter restrictions raised First Amendment concerns. And, he said, that the SEC's action "smacks of retaliation and censorship" after Musk was critical of the agency in a CBS interview. </p><p>After some jockeying in court, the matter was resolved with Musk's CEO position intact at Tesla and he and Hueston appeared outside the courtroom steps in the Southern District of New York, fielding questions from reporters. </p><h2>Hueston picks up McGlashan as a client</h2><p>It was around the same time that former TPG executive Bill McGlashan, who was charged by U.S. prosecutors of paying to falsify his son's record in an attempt to get him into the University of Southern California, was on the phone with Hueston about his own legal problems.</p><p>In the McGlashan case, Hueston interviewed as many as four parents for possible representation after a sweeping March indictment netted 33 accused of paying a consultant to create fake profiles and exam scores for their children to gain entry into top universities. </p><p>People familiar with the process said that Hueston went with Hollywood private-equity mogul McGlashan, at least in part, because he was willing to fight the charges rather than cop to a plea agreement with prosecutors to make the matter go away. </p><p>Later in the year, Hueston attacked the prosecutors charging McGlashan, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hollywood-mogul-and-former-tpg-exec-fights-college-admissions-charges-2019-12">peppering them with discovery requests</a> and asking for any documents that could show he had been unaware of the fraudulent scheme orchestrated by the consultant he paid, Rick Singer. </p><h2>From Enron prosecutor to a friend to big business </h2><p>Hueston has always been known as aggressive. He made his name in 2006 when he received public recognition for his role as the attack-dog prosecutor grilling former Enron chairman and CEO Ken Lay in one of the biggest corporate fraud trials ever. </p><p>Hueston had been called in from Southern California to Houston to work as one member of a special Justice Department task force investigating the events that led up to Enron's collapse in 2001.</p><p>He proved himself to be dogged in mounting a case against Lay, while others investigated onetime CEO and COO Jeffrey Skilling, as well as other executives. By the end of it, both Lay and Skilling were convicted on fraud and conspiracy charges, and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/04/business/yourmoney/04enron.html">Hueston's work was covered in lengthy profiles</a>. </p><p>Afterward, Hueston joined the law firm of Irell &amp; Manella, where he switched sides and, instead of holding corporations to account for wrongdoing, decided to make bank - earning millions defending corporations and wealthy people in both criminal prosecutions and civil business disputes.</p><h2>Split identity</h2><p>At times, Hueston has wrestled with whether he has wanted to continue on as a defense lawyer, according to people who know him. </p><p>In 2014, while working at Irell, he applied for the role of U.S. Attorney of the Central District of California, the most populous district in America. It involved an extensive, weeks-long application process, including reference checks, a list of cases and judges he appeared before, as well as names of opposing counsel. </p><p>"Making the decision to apply, I think, really was driven by a continuing desire to be a pubic servant," said Brian Hennigan, Hueston's law partner. </p><p>He was interviewed by Senator Dianne Feinstein, who would make the recommendation as to who would be the next U.S. Attorney for the Central District, appointed by then President Obama. They went with an internal hire instead: Eileen Decker, who served from 2015 to 2017. </p><p>Shortly after, he launched Hueston Hennigan, where he set out to handle high-stakes cases that are also in the public interest. </p><h2>Both plaintiffs and defense</h2><p>Since starting the firm, he's taken on both plaintiffs and defense-side cases, and some at discounted rates.</p><p>That includes representing Navajo Nation, an American Indian territory which has sued the EPA and other parties they say are responsible for a 2015 gold mine waste spill in Colorado. </p><p>The cases that don't fall into that "low bono" category, however, are often not pretty. </p><p>At one point, he represented Corinthian Colleges, the onetime for-profit college chain that was investigated by attorneys general for fraud, including fake job placement statistics, over-promising a flowery future to prospective students and then charging high prices for tuition and racking up student debt.</p><p>Both <a href="https://www.revealnews.org/article/how-corinthian-colleges-a-for-profit-behemoth-suddenly-imploded/">then-California attorney general Kamala Harris and the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau accused the school chain of financial improprieties. </a> </p><p>The school chain filed for bankruptcy and Harris won a $1.1 billion judgment against the defunct company in 2016, yet, thanks to Hueston's involvement, none of its executives were criminally charged. The monotony is broken only by the ROG-branded plate cap in the top-right corner and the dotted pattern on the remaining area behind the display lid.<br /><br />A notable design element is a contrasting effect achieved by the modified hinge rib, which adds visual interest to an otherwise plain top lid. The lid features the backlit ROG logo outlined in white and a thin line that matches the angular aesthetics of the corner plate. To emphasize its gaming credentials, the laptop boasts a glass-like transparent RGB light strip underneath the front deck edge, extending to the sides.<br /><br />While there is a slight flex to the lid when opening the screen, the hinge mechanism holds everything securely without any concerning lateral movements or creaking sounds. The arched hinge provides a tighter and more reassuring experience than the hinge engineering of certain ROG <keyword id="6929785" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="zephyrus" source="Orion">Zephyrus</keyword> laptops prone to damage. Overall, the ROG Strix Scar 17 offers a design that may not turn heads but remains visually pleasing with its conservative familiarity.<br /><br />Weighing three kilograms, the laptop is sleek enough to fit into larger laptop bags, making it easy to carry around. However, the charging cable and adapter are somewhat bulky.<br />          <div type="image" title="Asus ROG Strix Scar 17" msid="100695690" hostid="261"></div><br />You’ll find a pair of USB Type-C ports and a 3.5mm audio jack on the laptop’s left side. At the back, there is the charging port, LAN port, HDMI port, and a pair of USB Type-A ports, showcasing the changing times. While it's great to have two USB Type-A ports, more USB Type-C ports would be highly desirable. The absence of ports on the right side is notable. Placing the charging cable and LAN port on the side would allow for more comfortable configurations, such as when lying down or using a beanbag and a low table. The charging port at the back increases the likelihood of the cable slipping out, although an on-screen alert notifies you when this occurs. Reaching around the back of the device to reconnect the cable can be challenging, especially when the port is not visible. However, its standout feature is the impressive 240Hz refresh rate, a quick 3ms response time and support for Dolby Vision HDR. This screen offers a decent viewing experience, delivering high-contrast content with satisfactory colour saturation. The benefits of a pixel-dense, high refresh rate display are immediately noticeable.<br /><br />Although the viewing angles could be better, it is unlikely a major issue since most of your time will be spent looking at the screen head-on, where colour shifts are less noticeable. The IPS screen of the ROG Strix Scar 17 supports G-Sync and provides precise colour control with full coverage of the DCI-P3 and sRGB colour gamuts. Even when used outdoors under daylight, the need to readjust the screen angle is minimal due to the good brightness output, making it suitable for both work and play. However, in such conditions, colours may appear slightly muted. While Asus offers better screens in their Zephyrus lineup of gaming laptops, the ROG Strix Scar 17 panel is still respectable, especially considering the premium price tag of competing machines with similar CPU and GPU configurations.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Keeping the keyboard and trackpad simple" comment="subhead" text="Keeping the keyboard and trackpad simple"><span data-til="noop">Keeping the keyboard and trackpad simple</span></cmsannotation><br />          <div type="image" title="Asus ROG Strix Scar 17" msid="100695728" hostid="261"></div><br />Asus has successfully struck a balance with the keyboard and trackpad on the Scar 17, which remains unchanged in the latest model. The membrane keyboard provides a satisfying typing experience with a slimmed-down number pad and useful function keys, including dedicated volume controls. Typing on the Scar 17 is a delight, and I appreciate Asus's decision to stick with the membrane keyboard rather than opting for ‘mechanical’ alternatives found in machines like the Alienware x17 R2. Additionally, you can customize the keyboard's per-key RGB lighting using Armoury Crate.<br />          <div type="image" title="Asus ROG Strix Scar 17" msid="100695746" hostid="261"></div><br />The trackpad is decent, although it's slightly small. It follows the offset placement to the left, a characteristic seen in other Asus laptops, which I'm not fond of. When resting your fingers on the WASD keys, your palm may unintentionally rest on the trackpad's side. However, the trackpad excels at rejecting inputs from your palm. I repeatedly brushed my palm across the entire trackpad surface, yet it didn't register the slightest unintended input until I intentionally used my finger.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Tunning and heating" comment="subhead" text="Tunning and heating"><span data-til="noop">Tunning and heating</span></cmsannotation><br />The pre-installed Armory Crate app is the central hub for all your aesthetic customization and system tuning requirements. Depending on your usage preferences, you can easily switch between silent, performance, and turbo profiles, each offering a pre-configured level of CPU/GPU frequency and variable fan speed to provide the desired power output. After a 40-minute gaming session, with all the ray-tracing and DLSS features in full effect, the laptop deck never becomes uncomfortably hot—a rarity among laptops boasting such high-performance capabilities. However, it's worth noting that the internal CPU temperature did reach the 200 degrees Fahrenheit (93 degrees Celsius) mark.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Gaming performance" comment="subhead" text="Gaming performance"><span data-til="noop">Gaming performance</span></cmsannotation><br />This laptop boasts a powerful combination of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 GPU and the AMD RyzenTM 9 7945HX Mobile Processor series CPU, delivering exceptional gaming performance. The GPU has advanced features such as RT Cores, Tensor Cores, and streaming multiprocessors, resulting in realistic ray-traced graphics.<br />          <div type="image" title="Asus ROG Strix Scar 17" msid="100695808" hostid="261"></div><br />During my testing, I played games like Days Gone, <keyword id="641921" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tom-clancy" source="Orion">Tom Clancy</keyword>'s Ghost Recon, GTA 5, and Sniper Elite 4, and the gaming experience was a treat on this laptop. I could play all these games at high settings without any noticeable lag. However, I did experience some disappointment in terms of heating and fan noise. If you want to enjoy the sound while gaming fully, I would recommend using headphones to mitigate the somewhat daunting fan noise.<br /><br />Furthermore, I tested several AAA titles that can achieve a smooth 90 frames per second at ultra settings, and the laptop performed admirably. Undoubtedly, it can handle demanding games like Far Cry 6 and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy at ultra settings, providing an immersive gaming experience.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Battery &amp; charging" comment="subhead" text="Battery &amp; charging"><span data-til="noop">Battery &amp; charging</span></cmsannotation><br />The ROG Strix Scar 17 is equipped with a 4-cell 90-watt-hours battery, which comes with a 330W power brick. Asus claims that the laptop can charge from 0% to 50% in just 30 minutes, but this is under the assumption that the laptop is not actively engaged in any system activity. In real-world scenarios, with the machine powered on, a few background apps running, and the Silent profile enabled from Armory Crate, it took approximately 42 minutes to reach the halfway mark of the battery's capacity. However, if you prefer to avoid carrying the large power brick around, the Asus machine also offers the convenience of 100W charging via one of the Type-C ports.<br /><br />Battery life has historically been a concern for gaming laptops unless you are performing regular office or college work that is less demanding. While it's impossible to game on battery power alone, the laptop can last around 4-5 hours with normal work usage before recharging.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Conclusion" comment="subhead" text="Conclusion"><span data-til="noop">Conclusion</span></cmsannotation><br />The Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 has a price tag of Rs 2,69,990. While it's important to compare specifications and acknowledge the shortcomings of each device, when you're in this price range, it's crucial to choose a gaming laptop that resonates with your preferences. The HP Omen offers a powerful and beastly experience, the Dell Alienware provides an otherworldly gaming experience, and the MSI Raider is a formidable contender. All of these options have their merits.<br /><br />On the other hand, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 takes a different approach. It's like a silent, unassuming, and lethal ninja with hidden features. Striking a fine balance between performance and portability, it's an easy recommendation for me. In fact, if I purchase a gaming laptop, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 is my top choice.<br />
