Washington [US], December 18 (ANI): Two of the most common allergens in the contiguous United States are oak and ragweed pollens. Researchers at the Rutgers <keyword id="15818527" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="environmental-and-occupational-health" source="Orion">Environmental and Occupational Health</keyword> Sciences Institute have modelled how <keyword id="6361617" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-change" source="Orion">climate change</keyword> may alter these two <keyword id="818846" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pollen" source="Orion">pollen</keyword> distribution patterns. Your eyes may water reading the results, which were published in the journal Frontiers in Allergy. By 2050, airborne pollen loads will significantly increase as a result of climate change, according to a team led by <keyword id="15818525" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="panos-georgopoulos" source="Orion">Panos Georgopoulos</keyword>, professor of Environmental and Occupational Health and Justice at the <keyword id="15818528" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rutgers-school-of-public-health" source="Orion">Rutgers School of Public Health</keyword>. Some of the biggest increases will occur in regions where pollen has historically been scarce. "Pollen is an excellent sentinel for the impacts of climate change because shifts in variables like carbon dioxide and temperature affect the way plants behave," said Georgopoulos, who also is director of the Computational Chemodynamics Laboratory at Rutgers and faculty at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. "At the same time, the production of pollen and pollen's influence on allergic disease has been increasing due to climate change, and this is one of few studies to forecast this trend into the future." Previous efforts to connect pollen indices with climate change have been limited by a scarcity of data. For instance, there are about 80 pollen sampling stations in the U.S., operated by a variety of private and public agencies using different sampling methods. To overcome this challenge, the researchers adapted the Community Multiscale Air Quality modelling system, an open-source tool managed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to simulate distributions of allergenic oak and ragweed pollen for historical (2004) and future (2047) conditions. Results showed that even under moderate warming conditions, pollen season will start earlier and last longer throughout the U.S., with increasing average pollen concentrations in most parts of the nation. Mean concentrations of oak pollen could climb by more than 40 per cent in the Northeast and Southwest and mean concentrations of ragweed could jump by more than 20 per cent in these areas. Regional pollen shifts were observed, too. In parts of Nevada and northern Texas, oak pollen levels could double by mid-century, while Massachusetts and Virginia could see an 80 per cent increase in ragweed pollen by 2050. The pollen research was part of an ongoing project by the <keyword id="15818526" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rutgers-ozone-research-center" source="Orion">Rutgers Ozone Research Center</keyword>, which is funded by the EPA and New Jersey to study how climate change will influence air quality in the state. The bulk of that work examines the state's struggles with ground-level ozone, a byproduct of fossil fuel combustion that can damage the lungs. "New Jersey's air quality is going to be adversely impacted by climate change, both in terms of anthropogenic pollution and increased levels of pollen," Georgopoulos said. "For people with asthma, exposure to pollen and irritants like ozone increases the odds of respiratory illness. To protect the most vulnerable, we need to understand how these irritants will behave in a warming world." Climate change resulting in itchy eyes and runny nose, says research by Rutgers

This is a drastic change from last year’s survey when only 27% believed so. Similarly the percentage of people who rated the pandemic handling as ‘quite poorly’ went down from 32% last year to a mere 9% this year, as per a report by <keyword id="6379818" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="localcircles" source="Orion">LocalCircles</keyword>, a community social media platform. The opinion seems to have changed after the vaccination drive which covered around 200 crore people in first, second and booster doses. Nine out of 10 Indians or 88% are satisfied with how the government effectively handled the COVID vaccine development, procurement and distribution. Furthermore, 52% of the respondents said that the government handled the economic recovery quite well during the different waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. Only 25% believed that the government handled it very badly. Modi government popularity soars after vaccination drives and a mild third wave

By Barry Hatton Lisbon, Oct 27 (AP) Portugal's parliament was poised to reject on Wednesday the minority Socialist government's proposed state budget for 2022, a move that would likely trigger a snap election and put a brake on the country's post-pandemic recovery plans. The moderate Socialists were deserted by their hard-left allies from the Communist Party and the Left Bloc who have helped shore up the government's power over the past six years by voting for its policies or abstaining. Prime Minister António Costa said he wouldn't quit even if he was defeated. "The government's duty, my duty, is not to walk away when things become difficult," Costa told lawmakers. "We have to face up to difficulties." Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who has no executive powers but oversees the running of the country, has warned he would call an early election if parliament does not approve next year's government spending plan. A vote on the budget was expected Wednesday evening. Barring an eleventh-hour deal, the government's proposal appeared doomed. Due to constitutional requirements that must be met before an election can be held, and taking into account the Christmas vacation period, early polls would probably take place only in January. That means a new 2022 spending program probably wouldn't go before parliament before April. The timetable effectively consigns Portugal to months of political limbo just when the government was poised to fire up the economy after the COVID-19 pandemic by deploying some 45 billion euros (USD 52 billion) in aid funds from the European Union. A popular mass vaccination campaign has helped Portugal, for the moment, largely contain COVID-19. The way things stand, with fewer than 1,000 new cases a day since mid-September and daily deaths in single figures, the pandemic shouldn't hold up an election in the country of 10.3 million people. The Socialist Party currently holds 108 seats in Portugal's 230-seat parliament. Recent opinion polls suggest it would easily win the next election but would again fall short of a parliamentary majority. Costa, the prime minister whose political profile in the EU rose considerably during Portugal's presidency of the bloc last year, is widely considered a candidate for an international job. A poor election result could be his cue to depart national office. Both the Communist Party and Left Bloc lost votes in Portugal's 2019 election, with their decline in popularity blamed in part on their support for the more moderate Socialists. The center-right Social Democratic Party, the main opposition, is caught up in a leadership battle and has largely failed to capitalise on the government's predicament. The Socialists' differences with their hard-left allies piled up this year. Portuguese govt faces budget vote defeat; election likely

Lisbon, Oct 28 (AP) Portugal's president says the ballot box is the best way of breaking a political stalemate after the country's parliament threw out the minority Socialist government's proposed state budget for next year. The head of state's plan to hold a snap election could backfire, however, by producing an even more volatile political battleground, analysts say. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who has no governing powers but seeks to ensure the smooth running of the country, said before the budget vote Wednesday that he would call an early poll if lawmakers rejected the government's proposal. When that happened, he set in motion the consultations he is required to make before dissolving parliament and setting an election date, swiftly meeting with the prime minister and parliament speaker over dinner. He will also meet with political leaders, trade union confederations and business leaders before convening the Council of State, an advisory body, on Nov. 3. After that, he is widely expected to call an election, probably for January. Against a backdrop of a fragmenting political scene, with the rise of smaller parties, and the likelihood that no single party will clinch a parliamentary majority, Portugal's ambition of swiftly deploying tens of billions of euros (dollars) in post-pandemic recovery aid from the European Union is at stake. "We're heading into a phase of political turbulence in our country," Francisco Pereira Coutinho, a politics professor at Lisbon's Universidade Nova, said. "We're going into uncharted territory." Recent opinion polls suggest the center-left Socialist Party will be returned to power with a comfortable win, capturing around 39% of the vote. That would leave the Socialists still shy of a parliamentary majority and Portugal back where it started. The traditional center-right opposition parties, meanwhile, are in disarray. Both the main opposition Social Democratic Party and the smaller Popular Party are absorbed by leadership challenges. The hard-left Communist Party and Left Bloc have seen their popularity dwindle to single figures in recent elections. In the last election, in 2019, 10 parties won seats in the 230-seat parliament. Most striking is the rise of Portugal's first right-wing populist party, Chega! (Enough!. Founded just three years ago, it currently has one lawmaker, the party's leader, lawyer André Ventura. Chega! could collect as many as 20 seats at an election, potentially turning it into a kingmaker. Commuters in Lisbon, Portugal's capital, expressed unease Thursday about what the immediate future holds for the country of around 10.3 million people. Romi Silva, a lawyer, said Portugal needs to "overcome this situation very quickly so that we don't waste the aid from the European Union."
