<ul class="summary-list"><li>Rescuers have struggled to find the lost Titan submersible before it runs out of oxygen.</li><li>An ocean explorer says the race against time is just like the original sinking of the Titanic. </li></ul><p>The race against time to search for the lost Titanic submersible is "very much like the original sinking of the Titanic where the rescuers just couldn't get to it in time," an ocean explorer who helped find the wreck says. </p><p>Tom Dettweiler — an explorer and engineering consultant whose crew first discovered the Titanic wreckage in 1985 — <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/americas/live-news/titanic-missing-sub-oceangate-06-22-23/h_71d7129a08b1cd30554cc7d4106d7bcf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told CNN</a> that the submersible needs to be found "quite quickly" before its passengers run out of oxygen. </p><p>"It's just we are dealing with a long distance and difficult conditions," he explained to CNN. "If you think about it, it is very much like the original sinking of the Titanic where the rescuers just couldn't get to it in time."</p><p>The Carpathia, the first ship to come to the Titanic's rescue in 1912, <a href="https://www.insider.com/photos-titanic-passengers-getting-rescued-by-carpathia-2020-4#by-220-am-the-stern-of-the-titanic-slipped-under-water-and-the-surviving-passengers-never-saw-it-again-3">arrived more than 3 hours after</a> the Titanic first hit the iceberg, and more than an hour after the ship's stern finally slipped underwater. </p><p>And just like the original sinking 111 years ago, time is of the essence for the rescue of OceanGate's Titan submersible. </p><p>Dettweiler told CNN that even if the submersible is found, it would still take hours to bring it to the surface.</p><p>"The thing to do would be to bring it up as quickly as possible and open the hatch and get to the people," Dettweiler told CNN. "Unfortunately, it cannot be brought up all that quickly when it is on the end of a cable and dependent on the speed of a winch to bring it up. You're still talking about hours, potentially, to get it up."</p><p>Experts believe that the Titan sub may have <a href="https://www.insider.com/titan-sub-likely-used-96-hours-oxygen-prospects-bleak-2023-6#:~:text=According%20to%20estimates%2C%20the%20five,their%20oxygen%20would%20run%20out.">already run out of oxygen</a> early this morning. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Rhoda Mary Abbott was the only female passenger to go down with the Titanic and survive.</li><li>Kate Winslet's character in the 1997 film was reportedly a nod to Abbott.</li></ul><p>"Titanic" is heading to Netflix on July 1, according to <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2023-06-27/netflix-titanic-streaming-titan-submersible-disaster" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Los Angeles Times</a>. </p><p>Public interest in the <a href="https://www.insider.com/titanic-secrets-facts-2018-4">1912 shipwreck</a> has recently been reignited after five men who traveled to see the ship's wreckage in a submersible were killed in a <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-happens-when-submersible-submarine-implodes-2023-6">catastrophic implosion</a>.</p><p>The 1997 film shows the events that led up to the ship sinking and stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as Jack and Rose, a fictional couple who fell in love on the Titanic. As <a href="https://www.insider.com/james-cameron-had-near-death-titanic-sub-trip-russian-pilot-2023-6">Insider previously reported</a>, the film's director James Cameron made dozens of visits to the Titanic wreckage before filming. </p><div type="image" title="Titanic shipwreck debris in the ocean floor" height="4032" width="3024" msid="101416954" hostid="261"></div><p>But many people may not know that Winslet's character paid tribute to a real-life survivor of the shipwreck, Rhoda Mary Abbott. Like Rose in the film, Abbott was the only female passenger who went down with the Titanic and survived, according to <a href="https://eu.providencejournal.com/story/news/2017/04/14/titanic-rhode-island-ties-disasters-ripples-still-felt-by-passengers-descendants/21379231007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Providence Journal</a>.</p><h2>Abbott stayed on the ship for her two sons</h2><p>Abbott's name after the accident was often wrongly printed as "Rosa" because it was misspelled on the passenger manifest, the publication reports.</p><p>But unlike Rose, Abbott was a third-class passenger on the Titanic and was traveling with her two sons, Rossmore, 16, and Eugene, 13. Although she was given the opportunity to enter a lifeboat when the ship started sinking, Abbott stayed behind as she feared her sons were too old to be given a spot on board, the outlet added.</p><p>After the ship went down, Abbott was able to make her way to the last lifeboat. But her sons didn't survive, The Providence Journal reports. Amy Stanley, a third-class passenger who was friends with Abbott, later recalled what she had been told of Abbott's final moments with her sons.</p><p>"She told me that she would get in the lifeboat if there hadn't been so many people around," Stanley is reported to have said. </p><p>She added that Abott's sons stayed with her on a piece of wreckage in the ocean until they died.</p><p>"The youngest went first then the other son went. She grew numb and cold and couldn't remember when she got on the Carpathia," Stanley said. </p><p>Rose's character was also inspired by a notable figure in history. According to <a href="https://screenrant.com/titanic-movie-true-story-jack-rose-real-fake/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Screen Rant</a>, Cameron once said Rose was inspired by Beatrice Wood, an artist, actress, and wealthy socialite, and he read her memoir during the filming of the movie. </p><p>Although Wood was never a passenger on the Titanic, she was known to have traveled around Europe and North America, <a href="https://screenrant.com/titanic-rose-real-beatrice-wood-what-happened/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Screen Rant</a> reports.</p><p>Meanwhile, DiCaprio's character wasn't inspired by anyone in particular. However, while there was no Jack Dawson on board, Cameron discovered that there was a Joseph Dawson after writing the script, the publication added.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>It's been more than 100 years, but accounts of Titanic's survivors still intrigue people today.</li><li>Japanese passenger Masabumi Hosono wasn't among those celebrated for surviving the disaster.</li></ul><p>To this day, the sinking of the Titanic <a href="https://www.insider.com/titanic-secrets-facts-2018-4">remains the single most fascinating event</a> in maritime-disaster history.</p><p>But what continues to intrigue people even more are <a href="https://www.insider.com/millvina-dean-last-titanic-survivor-9-weeks-old">the captivating stories of survivors</a>, even ones as sad as that of Masabumi Hosono.</p><p>Before the Titanic set sail, Hosono, a Japanese bureaucrat, was working in Russia as <a href="https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2012/06/17/national/history/titanic-survivors-tale-a-whalers-arrival-osaka-tokyo-in-half-the-time-early-cases-of-aids/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">vice councilor of the Railway Board</a> for the Japanese Ministry of Transportation, <a href="https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2012/06/17/national/history/titanic-survivors-tale-a-whalers-arrival-osaka-tokyo-in-half-the-time-early-cases-of-aids/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Japan Times reported</a>.</p><p>Finally headed home, 42-year-old Hosono opted to board the Titanic in Southampton, England, rather than make the trek across Russia. A second-class passenger, he was believed to be the only Japanese traveler to board the ship, <a href="https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2012/06/17/national/history/titanic-survivors-tale-a-whalers-arrival-osaka-tokyo-in-half-the-time-early-cases-of-aids/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Japan Times reported.</a> </p><p>On the cold evening of April 14, 1912, the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic took a deadly turn when the ship crashed into an iceberg.</p><h2>Hosono was prepared to die when an officer said there was space on a lifeboat</h2><p>According to his account of the disaster — which he wrote mostly on <a href="https://www.insider.com/photos-titanic-passengers-getting-rescued-by-carpathia-2020-4">the rescue ship the RMS Carpathia</a> in the days after the sinking, and <a href="https://www.deseret.com/1997/12/30/19354253/japan-never-forgave-one-survivor" target="_blank" rel="noopener">which his family shared publicly in 1997</a> — he was woken by a knock on the door of his cabin. However, since Hosono was considered a foreigner, he was sent towards the lower decks, away from the lifeboats. </p><p>While preparing for his final moments, a chance appeared for him to survive <a href="https://www.brantfordexpositor.ca/opinion/columnists/reflections-on-a-life-and-death-decision" target="_blank" rel="noopener">when an officer loading a lifeboat</a> said there were two available seats. One man jumped at the chance and stepped forward. Hosono initially hesitated.</p><p>"I myself was plunged into desolation at the thought of not being able to see my beloved wife and children again since there was no other solution for me than to share the same destiny as the Titanic," Hosono wrote in a letter to his wife<a href="https://www.deseret.com/1997/12/30/19354253/japan-never-forgave-one-survivor" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> in the days after the disaster.</a> "But the example of the first man to jump pushed me to take this last chance."</p><div type="image" title="Carpathia" height="2223" width="2965" msid="102339643" hostid="261" sizebytes="967674"></div><p>So, he jumped, ensuring his survival. He became one of the Titanic's 700 survivors, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/titanic-famous-survivors-victims-2018-4">while 1,500 perished</a>.</p><h2>For decades, Japan wouldn't forgive him for surviving</h2><p>Unlike <a href="https://www.insider.com/titanic-survivor-violet-jessop-britannic-wreck-2023-7">Violet Jessop</a>, a stewardess who survived the sinking, or the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/titanic-famous-survivors-victims-2018-4">"Unsinkable" Molly Brown</a>, Hosono received a cold welcome from his home country.</p><p>He was met with harsh criticism from the Japanese press, which condemned men who lived as cowardly and praised the bravery of those who died. <a href="https://metropolisjapan.com/sole-survivor/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">According to Metropolis Japan</a>, he was shamed for not adhering to the "women and children first" principle and avoiding an honorable death. Thus, Hosono was subjected to what the Japanese refer to as "mura hachibu," or social ostracism.</p><p>He lost his job in 1914, <a href="https://archive.seattletimes.com/archive/?date=19971221&amp;slug=2579348" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Associated Press reported</a>. Despite being <a href="https://www.brantfordexpositor.ca/opinion/columnists/reflections-on-a-life-and-death-decision" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rehired part-time,</a> the stigma followed him for the rest of his life. Hosono lived in quiet shame as a recluse until his death from natural causes in 1939. Even upon his passing, mention of the Titanic had been forbidden in his home.</p><p><a href="https://www.brantfordexpositor.ca/opinion/columnists/reflections-on-a-life-and-death-decision" target="_blank" rel="noopener">According to The Brantford Expositor</a>, the humiliation surrounding Hosono's survival persisted into the 1990s, ramped up by negative publicity from Japanese media in the wake of <a href="https://www.insider.com/cast-of-titanic-where-are-they-now-20-years-after-premiere-2017-12">James Cameron's "Titanic."</a></p><h2>In 1997, Hosono's descendants published his writings of the Titanic's last hours, restoring his honor</h2><p><a href="https://archive.seattletimes.com/archive/?date=19971221&amp;slug=2579348" target="_blank" rel="noopener">In 1997, the AP reported</a> that his writings contradicted other accounts at the time which mistook him for another Asian man on a different lifeboat, who was accused of acting "ignobly." Instead, the writings suggested, Hosono actually helped row the lifeboat away from the sinking ship, saving fellow passengers.</p><div type="image" title="Titanic lifeboat" height="3472" width="4630" msid="102339647" hostid="261" sizebytes="633418"></div><p>The discovery effectively "restores his honor and credibility," Matt Taylor, an American researcher and Titanic scholar who investigated Hosono's writings, told <a href="https://archive.seattletimes.com/archive/?date=19971221&amp;slug=2579348" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the AP</a>. Sure enough, the revelations garnered much public sympathy for Hosono.</p><p>Written on Titanic stationery, Hosono's account to this day is considered one of the most detailed memorializations of what happened aboard the ill-fated ship in the midst of the panic.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Witnesses saw a bright, long-lasting <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-types-of-aurora-upending-understanding-of-polar-lights-2020-9">aurora</a> the night the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/titanic-deep-sea-expedition-to-recover-telegraph-2020-5">Titanic</a> sank.</li><li>A new theory suggests that aurora came from a powerful solar storm, which could have interfered with compasses and contributed to the <keyword id="27608" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="titanic">Titanic</keyword>'s crash.</li><li>But there was only a small burst of solar storm-like activity that night, so it's probably not the culprit.</li><li>However, the solar storm could have interfered with radio communications as the Titanic sent out SOS signals.</li></ul><p>As water flooded the belly of the RMS Titanic, a stunning display danced in the sky above the sinking ship.</p><p>"There was no moon, but the <keyword id="270371" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Aurora-Borealis">aurora borealis</keyword> glimmered like moonbeams shooting up from the northern horizon," James Bisset, second officer on the nearby vessel Carpathia, later <a href="https://archive.org/stream/trampsandladies006561mbp/trampsandladies006561mbp_djvu.txt">wrote</a>.</p><p>The Carpathia responded to the Titanic's SOS signal on April 14, 1912, after the ship struck an iceberg. As it approached the lifeboats, the sky was still shimmering.</p><p>"The peculiar atmospheric conditions of visibility intensified as we approached the icefield with the greenish beams of the aurora borealis shimmering and confusing the horizon ahead of us to the northwards," Bisset wrote.</p><div type="image" title="Titanic lifeboat" height="3472" width="4630" msid="78348248" hostid="261"></div><p>Now, a researcher thinks that display may be indicate another force at play in the ship's demise: a storm in space that wreaked magnetic chaos on Earth.</p><p>The aurora appears when electrically charged particles from the sun wash over the Earth. Our planet's <keyword id="133780" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="magnetic-field">magnetic field</keyword> channels these particles to the poles, where they interact with gases in the atmosphere to create dazzling ribbons of pink and green light.</p><div type="image" title="earth magnetic field solar wind aurora poles charged particles" height="337" width="600" msid="78348251" hostid="261"></div><p>Mila Zinkova, an independent weather researcher, thinks the aurora on the night the Titanic sank could have come from an episode of intense solar activity — a geomagnetic storm.</p><p>Such storms can interfere with magnetic and electric technology on Earth. So Zinkova thinks it's possible that a solar storm may have swayed compasses, steering the Titanic towards doom. She describes the theory in a <a href="https://rmets.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/wea.3817">paper</a> published last month in the Royal Meteorological Society's journal, Weather.</p><p>Other experts say the theory is unlikely, though it is possible that <keyword id="823889" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Space-Weather">space weather</keyword> may have hindered efforts to rescue the ship's passengers.</p><h2>A big space storm on the night the Titanic sank is unlikely</h2><div type="image" title="coronal mass ejection sun" height="1013" width="1350" msid="78348252" hostid="261"></div><p>Lawrence Beesley, a passenger on the Titanic, mistook the aurora for the light of dawn as he awaited rescue on one of the lifeboats.</p><p>"The soft light increased for a time, and died away a little; glowed again, and then remained stationary for some minutes," he wrote in his <a href="https://books.google.com/books?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;id=UjsqAAAAYAAJ&amp;oi=fnd&amp;pg=PA1&amp;ots=d9fv8LHJ7A&amp;sig=-NEJlLTMF7xnmI9Y9U-0Is0lY70#v=snippet&amp;q=northern%20lights&amp;f=false;q=northern%20lights&amp;f=false">account</a> of the disaster. "'The northern lights!' It suddenly came to me, and so it was: Presently the light arched fanwise across the northern sky, with faint streamers reaching towards the Pole star."</p><p>Despite the brightness of that aurora, however, geomagnetic data from the night show only a small burst of activity in Earth's magnetic field.</p><p>That could account for the aurora that survivors and rescuers saw, but it was "not enough to count as a storm," according to Mike Hapgood, a space-weather consultant at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK.</p><p>What's more, the small burst came right around the time that the Titanic struck the iceberg. Zinkova's theory would only be plausible if there had been a geomagnetic storm well before the ship crashed.</p><p>"The bottom line is that the timing is wrong to consider space weather as a cause of the collision with the iceberg. The space weather event occurred after the collision," Hapgood told Business Insider.</p><div type="image" title="titanic aurora geomagnetic activity graph" height="1512" width="2288" msid="78348255" hostid="261"></div><p>But one facet of Zinkova's theory may be true: Geomagnetic activity could have interfered with radio communications after the shipwreck. There, Hapgood said, space weather may have had "some small effects."</p><p>That could explain why the nearby vessel La Provence never received the Titanic's SOS signal, and why the Titanic couldn't receive the Mount Temple's response to its cries for help.</p><h2><keyword id="6360409" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nasa">NASA</keyword> <keyword id="6375764" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="spacecraft">spacecraft</keyword> could help predict dangerous geomagnetic storms in the future</h2><p>Even if there had been a major geomagnetic storm the night the Titanic sank, it likely would not have been enough to tip the scales.</p><p>"Chances are that a slight change in compass headings would not have prevented the disaster," Stephen Frazee, a trustee on the board of the Titanic International Society, told Business Insider.</p><p>Instead, historians mostly attribute the Titanic's demise to Captain E.J. Smith's decision to sail at full speed through icy waters that night. Other contributing factors include the lookouts' lack of binoculars and a radio operator's failure to relay another ship's ice warning to the captain.</p><p>However, geomagnetic storms have wreaked havoc on critical infrastructure and exacerbated other disasters in the past. Two such storms cut off emergency radio communications for a total of 11 hours following Hurricane Irma in 2017. And a geomagnetic storm in 1989 <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2016/nasa-helps-power-grids-weather-geomagnetic-storms">knocked out Quebec's power</a> for about nine hours. (Electric currents from <keyword id="917898" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Solar-storms">solar storms</keyword> can travel down Earth's pipelines and power lines.) </p><p>Even the possibility that the same forces might have played a role in the Titanic disaster, Zinkova wrote, shows that "predicting space weather is as important as forecasting meteorological weather."</p><div type="image" title="solar orbiter sun spacecraft" height="1414" width="1885" msid="78348258" hostid="261"></div><p>But dangerous solar storms are nearly impossible to foresee. The sun can send billions of tons of material hurtling towards Earth, and the charged particles can reach the planet in under half an hour.</p><p>Scientists hope new spacecraft could improve their understanding of these events, though.</p><p>In February, NASA and the European Space Agency launched <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/europe-nasa-launching-new-spacecraft-toward-the-sun-2020-1">the Solar Orbiter</a> to capture data about eruptions on the sun's surface. NASA's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-parker-solar-probe-winds-flip-suns-magnetic-field-2019-12">Parker Solar Probe</a> is also zooming around the sun. It's designed to measure solar eruptions as they happen, tracing the flow of material from the sun to the Earth in real-time.</p><p>The information these spacecraft are collecting could one day help scientists forecast geomagnetic storms before they happen.</p>
