<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="953866" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Carl-Reiner">Carl Reiner</keyword> died at the age of 98 on Monday night of natural causes.</li><li>Reiner is best known for his decades-long work in comedy that included creating "<keyword id="5440450" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Dick-Van-Dyke-Show">The Dick Van Dyke Show</keyword>" and directing movies like "Oh God" and "The Jerk."</li><li>Reiner also played the character Saul Bloom in the "<keyword id="550499" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Oceans-Eleven">Ocean's Eleven</keyword>" franchise.</li></ul><p>Carl Reiner — the writer, producer, director, and actor who over decades was one of the most groundbreaking figures in comedy — died on Monday night.</p><p>Reiner died of natural causes at his home in Beverly Hills, <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2020/06/30/carl-reiner-dead-dies-98-dick-van-dyke-show/">according to TMZ</a>. <a href="https://variety.com/2020/biz/news/carl-reiner-dead-died-dick-van-dyke-1234694208/">Variety confirmed</a> the news from Reiner's assistant, Judy Nagy.</p><p>Over his career that spanned seven decades, Reiner won nine Emmys, was the creator of "The Dick Van Dyke Show," and played the memorable Saul Bloom character in the "Ocean's Eleven" franchise in the early 2000s.</p><p>Reiner first gained notice in the 1950s when he wrote and acted for the TV show "Your Show of Shows" starring Sid Caesar. That notice (and Emmy wins) led to his friendship with fellow comedy legend Mel Brooks. The two formed a successful comedy duo and created the popular "2000 Year Old Man" comedy sketches through the 1960s.</p><p><div type="image" title="The Jerk Univerasl Getty" height="3615" width="4820" msid="76714897" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Reiner also directed hit comedy movies like "Oh God" (starring George Burns) and "The Jerk," which started a string of Steve Martin movies he would direct, including "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid," "The Man with Two Brains," and "All of Me."</p><p>Through the 1980s and 1990s, he also appeared on TV shows like "Frasier," "Mad About You," "Two and a Half Men" and "Hot in Cleveland."</p><p>When social media started up Reiner became a presence on <a href="https://twitter.com/carlreiner">Twitter</a>, showing that even in his 90s he still displayed his comedic wit. He also used the platform to speak out about social injustice.</p><p>Like this tweet in 2017:</p><p>And days ago, he was pictured wearing a Black Lives Matter shirt with his daughter Sylvia Anne and Mel Brooks at Brooks' 94th birthday party:</p><p>Reiner was born in the Bronx, New York, in 1922 and studied acting in his youth including performing in summer stock. He entered the Army during World War II and after that found work on Broadway, leading to his career in <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="entertainment">entertainment</keyword>.</p><p>Reiner's wife, Estelle, died in 2008. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Dick Van Dyke, 98, says he would have tried to be healthier if he knew he'd live to be this old.</li><li>The actor opened up about his life and career in a recent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbsnews.com/video/dick-van-dyke-forever-young/">CBS News</a> interview.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/mary-poppins-fun-facts-2018-9">Dick Van Dyke</a>, who turned 98 last week, says he would have tried to be healthier if he knew he'd get this old.</p><p>"If I had known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself. You know, I went through that whole period of alcoholism," Van Dyke told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbsnews.com/video/dick-van-dyke-forever-young/">CBS News</a> correspondent Tracy Smith in a new interview.</p><p>Thankfully, his wife <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/dick-van-dyke-arlene-silver-relationship-timeline-2022-3">Arlene Silver</a> "makes sure" he goes to the gym three days a week to do a full workout, Van Dyke added.</p><p>Indeed, the "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/mary-poppins-the-cast-now-2018-12">Mary Poppins</a>" star has lived a full and exciting life thus far, with a career spanning over seven decades.</p><p>Looking back, the actor says his career has always "depended on" having fun.</p><p>"If I'm not enjoying myself, I'm really bad," Van Dyke said. "It's such a blessing to find a way of making a living that you love, that you'd do for nothing."</p><p>He added that he felt sorry for people who hate their jobs because he looked forward to going to work every morning.</p><p>His passion for acting hasn't changed a bit — Van Dyke admits he still gets letters from little kids these days, and it makes him happy.</p><p>"And that is what I love," he said. "They watch the movies over and over. I'm getting so much more mail today than I did during the heyday of my career."</p><p>But of course, there are also sad moments that come with living a long life.</p><p>"Everybody I knew and worked with, there's no one left," the actor said, when Smith brought up his friends <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/norman-lear-dead-tv-shows-all-in-the-family-jeffersons-2023-12">Norman Lear</a>, who passed away earlier this month at 101, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/comedy-legend-carl-reiner-dead-98-2020-6">Carl Reiner</a>, who died in 2020 at 98.</p><p>"Both gone," Van Dyke continued, adding that he tries to manage his grief by keeping busy and getting involved in different activities.</p><p>In a separate interview with <a target="_blank" href="https://people.com/dick-van-dyke-says-he-was-out-of-work-a-lot-early-in-career-8417649">People</a>, published yesterday, the actor also said that he tries to make new friends even at his age.</p><p>"I'm happy to say people come to me," Van Dyke told People. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="833079" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="sean-young">Sean Young</keyword> said that her career was sabotaged by Hollywood directors who labeled her "difficult."</li><li>Young named <keyword id="66615" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Steven-Spielberg">Steven Spielberg</keyword>, <keyword id="39159" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ridley-Scott">Ridley Scott</keyword>, and Warren Beaty as directors who sabotaged her career.</li><li>But the actress praised <keyword id="38419" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jim-Carrey">Jim Carrey</keyword> for helping her land a role in 1994's "Ace Ventura."</li></ul><p>"Blade Runner" actress Sean Young <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/sean-young-on-surviving-hollywoods-many-toxic-men">told the Daily Beast</a> that she believes her career was derailed by a handful of Hollywood's most powerful male directors including Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg, and Warren Beatty, who labeled her as "difficult" and blacklisted her from major roles.</p><p>Young, now 61, played the role of Rachael, Harrison Ford's love interest in "Blade Runner." Some of Young's other credits include 1994's "Ace Ventura" and 1984's "Dune." But in the past, Young has spoken openly about the difficulties working in Hollywood. In 2015, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/mar/26/blade-runner-sean-young-interview">she told The Guardian</a> that Warren Beatty sacked her from 1990's "Dick Tracy" after she declined his advances, which Beatty has denied.  </p><p>In the Daily Beast interview, Young talks about a 2009 interview she gave to Carl Reiner in which Reiner implied that Young's reputation had been unfairly smeared by a famous director who he does not name. When asked whether the director Reiner was referring to was Beatty, Young said: "Warren was definitely one of them. Steven Spielberg was another."</p><div type="image" title="sean young blade runner" height="844" width="1280" msid="81671152" hostid="261"></div><p>Later in the interview, Young was asked whether Beatty was the "worst of the bunch," to which she replied no and highlighted the wider issues within Hollywood. </p><p>She said: "It's not just Warren-it's across the board. Ever since the movie business began, women have been treated as a commodity. There was always someone grabbing you, and I just ignored it. I mean, have you taken a look at Harvey Weinstein? How the f--- is he gonna get laid unless he has power? Never."</p><p>Further into the interview, Young is asked about her time working with Ridley Scott on "Blade Runner" and the origins of the film's aggressive love scene featuring her character and Harrison Ford. She said: "Well, honestly, Ridley wanted me to date him. He tried very hard in the beginning of the show to date him, and I never would. I was like, nah. And then he started dating the actress who played Zhora, Joanna Cassidy, and I felt relieved."</p><p>She continued: "And then we do this scene, and I think it was Ridley. I think Ridley was like, 'F--- you.' I was thinking, 'Why did this have to be like that? What was the point of that?' and I think it was Ridley's none-too-subtle message that he was getting even with me."</p><p>Young went on to say that she inadvertently offended Steven Spielberg after approaching him about not landing the role of Marion Ravenwood in "Raiders of the Lost Ark," which she had auditioned for. </p><p>"I saw him at a New Year's Eve party that Jerry Belson had up by the Mulholland area, and Steven was there. I said to him, 'You misled me! I thought I was going to get the part.' And this really offended him," she said. </p><p>"He was all, 'I did not mislead you! I did not!' I was like, 'Whoa, calm down. I didn't mean it like you were a bad guy or anything, I just really thought I was going to get the part. You flew me back to California twice.' Very sensitive. And you have to remember, he did that to Bill Hurt. Steven wanted Bill in 'Jurassic Park,' and Bill didn't want to do it, and that was not what he wanted to hear. Steven has enough power to cancel you. He canceled Megan Fox."</p><p>Insider has contacted Spielberg, Beatty, and Scott for comment regarding Young's comments but did not hear back immediately. </p><p>Young did, however, praise her "Ace Ventura" co-star Jim Carrey, who she said fought for her to land a role in the film despite protests from the studio. </p><p>She said: "He's the only leading man who ever did that for me. Jim came in and said, 'No, no, no. Whatever you're hearing is bulls---. She's great.'"</p>

Hong Kong democracy activists are already resigning from organizations and erasing social media accounts. </li><li><strong>The president was briefed on Russian/Taliban bounty killings. </strong><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/29/us/politics/russian-bounty-trump.html">According to news reports,</a> his daily briefing in February described the Russian sabotage campaign, but White House officials deny he was told about it. </li><li><strong>Trump's phone calls with world leaders are "delusional."</strong> <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/29/politics/trump-phone-calls-national-security-concerns/index.html">A devastating CNN article</a> cites Trump's own staffers describing how the President fails to prepare for calls, gets played by Putin and Erdogan, insults Merkel, and endangers US national security. </li><li><strong>Carl Reiner died at age 98. </strong>The <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/30/arts/television/carl-reiner-dead.html">comedy legend</a> teamed with Mel Brooks and Sid Caesar, helped create the modern sitcom, directed a bunch of great comic films (including <em>The Jerk</em>), and was a pretty good actor too.</li></ul><h2><strong>VIEWS OF THE DAY</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="phone call Donald Trump" height="1193" width="2386" msid="76718777" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p><strong>Imagine you had a boss like <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword>. </strong></p><p>Imagine your boss did this: </p><p>You send him a memo about a life-or-death issue for the company, and he doesn't read it. He has regular calls with firms you're doing deals with, but he doesn't prepare for them, and instead spends the whole call talking about himself, or insulting the person he's talking to. He commits an egregious, humiliating screw-up one morning, then turns his phone off and plays golf, leaving everyone else to clean up the mess.</p><p>These are not hypothetical examples. This is quite literally an account — taken from a single day! — of how Donald Trump does the job we hired him to do, and that we pay him to do. </p><p>In the last 24 hours, we learned that his Presidential Daily Briefing did highlight the shocking Russian murder-for-hire program and the American soldiers killed by it, but the president <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/29/us/politics/russian-bounty-trump.html?action=click&amp;module=Top%20Stories&amp;pgtype=HomepageHomepage">doesn't read the daily briefing</a>. Even though the briefing summarizes the most important threats facing the United States, the country he runs. </p><p>In the last 24 hours, we also learned that Trump <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/29/politics/trump-phone-calls-national-security-concerns/index.html">doesn't prepare for his calls with other world leaders</a>, which have enabled them to gull, outfox, and manipulate him. The president, whose primary job is safeguarding national security, is so incompetent that he's viewed as a threat by his own staff. (Oh, and he also spends much of his time on the calls belittling the leaders of America's allies, especially if they're women.) </p><p>In the last 24 hours, we also learned that the president went dark after retweeting a video of his supporters yelling "white power."<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-golfing-aides-struggled-to-contact-delete-white-power-video-2020-6"> He headed off to play golf, and no one could reach him.</a> His own top aides say they could not find the President of the United States for three hours. You're probably not the president of any country, and you probably don't have a security detail, but I bet your colleagues could track you down in less than three hours, even on a Sunday morning. </p><p>None of these episodes even concerns <em>what</em> Donald Trump does as president. They have nothing to do with the shameful mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic, for example. They are just three examples from a single day of <em>how</em> he does his job. </p><p>We all know what would happen to a boss who behaved like this in any regular workplace. He'd be out in hours, fired by the board and sued by shareholders. <em>— DP</em></p><p><strong>A national "mask mandate" could save 5% of <keyword id="35050" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="gdp">GDP</keyword></strong></p><p>Everyone's sick of lockdowns, especially the White House, so it seems unlikely that the Federal government would ever support a national stay-at-home order.  </p><p>And even if the government did issue such an order, it's unlikely that most Americans would comply with it. We had our shot to control and crush the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> with lockdowns, and we flubbed it. </p><p>But there's a much simpler measure the Federal government could get behind that would make a big difference: A national mandate for Americans to wear masks.</p><p>According to many studies, ubiquitous mask-wearing radically reduces coronavirus transmission (see, for example, the Goldman Sachs analysis below). Mask wearing also gives people the freedom to resume more of their normal lives, and, therefore, preserves more economic activity.</p><p><div type="image" title="Mask wearing effect on coronavirus" height="1330" width="1184" msid="76718782" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Goldman's economics team estimates that a national mask mandate would significantly increase the percentage of Americans who wear masks.</p><p>More importantly — compared to another lockdown of similar effectiveness — a mask mandate would preserve 5% of GDP. </p><p>In other words, if only he were able to swallow his pride and order Americans to wear masks, President Trump might be able to singlehandedly boost the US economy. <em>— HB</em></p><p><strong>Is Parler — the conservative-friendly "free speech" social media platform — already banning users?</strong></p><p>Mainstream conservatives such as Sen. Ted Cruz and far-right activists such as self-described "<a href="https://bridge.georgetown.edu/research/factsheet-laura-loomer/">proud Islamophobe</a>" Laura Loomer have touted the new social media platform Parler as a safe space for right-of-center voices marginalized by the "<a href="https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2020/jun/25/parler-surges-carpe-donktum-big-tech-censorship-vi/">techo-fascists</a>" who run Twitter and Facebook.</p><p>Parler is supposed to support "free speech," whereas established platforms like Twitter and Facebook supposedly restrict it.</p><p>But according to <a href="https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20200627/23551144803/as-predicted-parler-is-banning-users-it-doesnt-like.shtml">TechDirt</a>, Parler is already banning some left-of-center users. (I reached out to Parler for comment, but have not heard back yet.)</p><p><a href="https://home.parler.com/about/">Parler describes itself</a> as a "non-biased free speech driven entity," but also acknowledges that its "interactions are subject to guidelines; and when you respect them, you are free to participate wholly." Its terms of service plainly state that it "may remove any content and terminate your access to the Services at any time and for any reason or no reason." And here's how <a href="https://twitter.com/viacristiano/status/1277941967402553345?s=21">Parler's CEO described their policies</a> last night in a tweet. </p><p>That doesn't sound much different than any of the platforms such as Youtube, which caused a stir yesterday <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/youtube-bans-stefan-molyneux-hate-speech-david-duke-richard-spencer-2020-6">by banning some white nationalist and alt-right channels</a>. </p><p>As I've written for Business Insider, there are good reasons to not demand that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dont-make-social-media-tech-bro-twitter-facebook-arbiters-truth-2020-5">billionaire tech bros become the arbiters of truth</a> and acceptable discourse. But if Parler's mission is to bring back the wild west of the internet, its own rules appear to be designed to prevent that from happening. <em>— AF</em></p><h2><strong>IDEA OF THE DAY </strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="taiwan school coronavirus" height="1100" width="2200" msid="76718787" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p><strong>Nothing is solved until kids return to school. </strong>There are 32 million American households with school-age children, and more than 50 million kids attend US public schools, and we have no plan for them. </p><p>Recovery remains a pipe dream unless kids go to school. Normal life can't begin until kids go to school. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/29/opinion/coronavirus-school-reopening.html?action=click&amp;module=Opinion&amp;pgtype=HomepageHomepage">A deservedly scathing column from the New York Times' Michelle Goldberg</a> lays out how we've neglected and botched the most important economic question of the pandemic. </p><p>Americans are being summoned back to work. Great! But where are their kids supposed to go while they tend bar and install furnaces? </p><p>School districts are talking about having kids spend a couple of days a week in the classroom — at most — to ensure social distancing. They're proposing to rely instead on remote learning, which is a disaster, and steals future economic productivity and happiness from our children. Has there been a crash program to find extra classroom space so kids could go back four days instead? Has there been an emergency appropriation so schools can hire temporary aides and thus reduce classroom sizes? It's limited our travel plans, eliminated our dinner parties, and left us missing a warm hug and a friendly kiss. But there is one positive aspect: Many of us now have more time. This has turned out to be a boon for my award-winning <a href="https://www.carolezimmer.com/podcast">"Now What?" podcast.</a> With less to do, many people I've always wanted to talk to now agree to a conversation, especially if all they have to do to connect is walk into their living room and click on a Zoom link .  </p><p>The downside of that ease is that you always lose something special when you're not in the same room as the person you're speaking to. I'm so glad that I got the chance to talk to Norman Lear in 2017 in his spacious Beverly Hills office which is filled with photos from the legendary television shows he created over the last half century. I would also have missed the chance to sit in a comfortable chair in Carl Reiner's living room, the same chair where Reiner's best friend Mel Brooks used to sink into when he came over for his nightly dinners. Those  experiences unfortunately could never be replicated in cyberspace.</p><p>But whatever form it takes, getting the chance to talk with Jane Fonda, Ken Burns,  Oliver Stone, and others was a treat I treasure. They have stories to tell about what happens when you follow your dreams, overcome failures, and manage to navigate all the bumps in the road during challenging times. Even though we may not meet back up in person, their advice rings even more true during this uncertain year.</p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">1. Actress and activist Jane Fonda on feeling bad and finding meaning</strong></h2><p><strong style="color: #000000;"></strong></p><p>During her long career, Jane Fonda has emerged as the kind of person who not only talks about the problems we face on the planet, but tries to do something about them too. </p><p>Jane's father Henry was Hollywood royalty, one of the country's most successful and well-known actors. At 23, Jane made her acting debut on Broadway, and has since appeared in more than 45 movies and won two Academy Awards. Jane was in her 30s when she began protesting the Vietnam War and made a trip to the war-torn Asian country that earned her the name of Hanoi Jane. </p><p>Now at 82, Fonda has been leading a movement against the ravages of climate change that have resulted in five arrests for civil disobedience. Her book "What Can I Do?: My Path from Climate Despair to Action" tells the story about her involvement in the social causes that changed the course of her life.   </p><p>"I spent the first 30 years of my life totally uninvolved, unaware, hedonistic, and miserable. I didn't know why I was put on earth. My life had no meaning, and I was not very happy," Fonda said in our October 2020 interview when I asked her why she chooses to speak out publicly about controversial political issues.  "Because of the Vietnam War, because of what US soldiers told me about what was really happening in Vietnam, I decided to leave that life of mine and become an activist, and when that happened the depression lifted and I felt that my life had meaning and I've been trying to get better at it for 60 years. "The Glorias" director Julie Taymor on the benefits of failure</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Julie Taymor   Marco Grob copy" height="1874" width="2499" msid="79827814" hostid="261"></div><p>Julie Taymor's breakout hit was the Broadway production of The Lion King which received raves and resulted in years of sold out performances. Taymor became the first woman to win a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical. <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/leeseymour/2017/12/18/the-lion-king-is-making-more-money-for-disney-than-star-wars/?sh=457e5b411ff0">The Lion King has earned more money than any entertainment title in box office history.</a></p><p>Taymor has also found success on the big screen with films like "Frida" about the life of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and her tempestuous relationship with Diego Rivera. Taymor's current film, "The Two Glorias," explores the life of feminist icon Gloria Steinem. </p><p>But looming large in Taymor's career is a controversial Broadway production of "Spiderman: Turn off The Dark. The blockbuster musical has the distinction of being the most expensive show ever mounted on Broadway. In 2011, Taymor was fired from Spiderman after a preview period marked by technical mishaps and negative reviews. Taymor says it was her experience with Spiderman that helped her to come to terms with failure. </p><p>"I went to India right after the 'Spiderman' debacle, if you want to call it that," she said, adding the incident caused her to reevaluate where she wanted to go with her career. Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns on the lessons of history in hard times</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Ken Burns 2" height="1503" width="2000" msid="79827815" hostid="261"></div><p>When I spoke with Ken Burns he was in his New Hampshire home in May 2020, he was thinking about how the pandemic has changed his life. Burns, who is probably the best-known documentary filmmaker in this country, says the global health crisis has made him appreciate every moment he gets to spend with his four daughters. And he's cooking more, having become a master of the grill with his special recipe for chicken with maple syrup.  </p><p>Burns is working on multiple projects at one time juggling subject matter that ranges from Ernest Hemingway to the Revolutionary War. One of his best-known documentaries is about the Vietnam War; he also created the documentary series "The Civil War" and traces his own lineage back to Colonial Americans who were Loyalists during the American Revolution.  </p><p>Burns says he's always been drawn to history rather than fiction and spent a lot of time reading the encyclopedia when he was growing up.  </p><p>"It is the ultimate cliché to say that history repeats itself. It has never, ever repeated itself. There has never been an event that was exactly an event from before. Nor are we condemned to repeat what we don't remember," he said. "We understand the hopeful impulse of that, but it's just not true. almost everything is rhyming in the present. I remain kind of optimistic because history gives you a little bit of perspective and perspective in the end is all you really need. Writer Ann Patchett on getting stuck and powering through </strong></h2><div type="image" title="Ann Patchett" height="960" width="1280" msid="79827816" hostid="261"></div><p>Ann Patchett is the best-selling author of eight novels including "Bel Canto" and "Commonwealth." Her latest book, "The Dutch House" was a finalist for the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.</p><p>Patchett's love of writing is rivaled by her love of reading and her support of independent bookstores. She co-owns the famous Parnassus bookstore in Nashville, Tennessee, and says the store continues to do a brisk online business during the pandemic and is "part of our community as never before."</p><p>Throughout the pandemic, Patchett has appeared on the Parnassus Books Instagram account where she offers recommendations about what to read. She often wears a ball gown or a cocktail dress for the occasion because "the alternative was staying in yoga pants for the rest of my life." Patchett points out that since many us now have more uncluttered time, it's a great opportunity to take a deep dive into books like "War and Peace" and "David Copperfield."  </p><p>Patchett hasn't decided what her next writing project will be but she knows she'll have to jump through hoops to see it through.  "I spend a long time thinking about a book before I sit down and start to write it," she said when she spoke to me in April 2020 from a closet in her Nashville home.</p><p>"And then when I finally do sit down, which is the most miserable part, so I get the book all worked out in my head and then I sit down. I'll maybe sit down for 15 minutes a day. It's like sitting on a hot stove. It's just miserable. By the time I'm writing the end of the book, I can sit at my desk for 12 or 14 hours a day, so there's no rhyme or reason… I actually don't believe in writer's block. I believe that there are problems that are very hard and maybe some problems that are not solvable, but if you sit down and you can't write and you say, 'Well, I'm blocked' that means that there is something external that's happening to you. My husband is a doctor and he doesn't get doctor's block… he doesn't ever get to say, 'Oh, I can't solve that problem because I'm blocked,' so I just don't ever say that."</p><p><a href="https://directory.libsyn.com/episode/index/show/nowwhat/id/14089805">Hear more from Ann Patchett on books that bring comfort.</a></p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">5. Former Congresswoman Katie Hill on overcoming scandal and the everlasting exposure of nude photos</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Katie Hill Headshot" height="2250" width="3000" msid="79827819" hostid="261"></div><p>Katie Hill was 31 when she was elected to Congress from a district in California that had been Republican for many years. It was the 2018 midterm elections that brought Hill to Washington along with other young women like Lauren Anderson and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.   </p><p>Hill was thrilled to be in the company of a revitalized House of Representatives. Hill's freshman class chose her to represent it at regular meetings with the Democratic leadership and Speaker Nancy Pelosi became a kind of mentor to Hill.</p><p>But after just nine months in office, Hill's Congressional career ended abruptly when nude photos of her began circulating online. They showed Hill and a young woman who had worked on Hill's campaign in intimate moments together.</p><p>Pelosi and Hill's other friends in Congress urged her to fight on but in November  2019, Hill announced she was stepping down. Faced with the title "disgraced Congresswoman," Hill said she was a victim of revenge porn from her estranged husband. She wrote a book about the perils of public shaming called  "She Will Rise: Becoming a Warrior in the Battle for True Equality."</p><p>I asked Katie Hill in August 2020 what it was like to live her life in the middle of a scandal that left her exposed in so many ways before the world.</p><p>"The physical exposure is something that a lot of people have nightmares about. It's one of the most recurring nightmares that you're trapped in the nude, and you're trying to escape, but for me that was every single day. I felt like such a failure. I felt so much guilt around the situation. I felt like it would be better for me to just go away entirely for so many people," Hill said. "But then, I was getting closer and closer to that moment of truth, I guess. I thought, 'You know what? Maybe the worst thing that I could do would be to disappear entirely,' and I felt like I couldn't do it to my family. Director Oliver Stone on feeling like a failure when he made the film "The Hand"</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Oliver Stone" height="1650" width="2200" msid="79827820" hostid="261"></div><p>Oliver Stone gained a reputation as the baddest of Hollywood bad boys, the ultimate risk taker. In his younger years, Stone spent a lot of time in a drug-induced haze. He spouted conspiracy theories and sometimes acted crazy. </p><p>Stone also gained a reputation as one of the great directors of his generation who has made films like "Midnight Express" and "Platoon," a gritty film about the Vietnam War that earned him Academy awards for Best Director and Best Writer. And he went on to make other acclaimed features like "Salvador," "Born on the Fourth of July" and "Wall Street. " </p><p>Stone' book "Chasing the Light" recounts the most tumultuous years of his life including the pain he felt when one of his early films called "The Hand" was torn apart by critics. <strong> </strong></p><p>Stone told me, "I was a first-time director in Hollywood terms. My failure felt like I was in a magnifying glass and that everybody was seeing it in a fishbowl business. I took it hard. I took it very hard. I was ashamed of myself, and I was shamed by others and I allowed myself to be shamed. You understand that? And it's easy for a person who had very low self-esteem to begin with. I was just a G.I. and a cab driver; I didn't have any claims to celebrity."</p><p>"I guess you have to be optimistic. It's a setback. You lose two years of your life. A project you work on doesn't happen. I've gotten used to it. Plus, on top of it, my sensibilities are divorced from very much of the Hollywood scene as I see things in a world sense. I've met many of the leaders and I see things in a different way than the American way. There is an American optics on everything. We see the world from our point of view. Jane Fonda, Oliver Stone, Katie Hill, and others share how they bounced back after disappointment and failure in their careers

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div>It's hard to overstate Norman Lear's impact on the world of television.<p>He's the creator of shows like "All in the Family," "Good Times," and "The Jeffersons," programs that not only brought in 120 million viewers a week, but challenged Americans' views on topics like racism, poverty, and abortion.</p><p>He worked with comedy icons like Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks and influenced generations of television writers, including "South Park" co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone.</p><p>He's one of the first group of inductees to the Television Hall of Fame and has four Emmys and a Peabody Award, among many other honors.</p><p>Lear's outspoken, controversial views earned him a spot on President Richard Nixon's "Enemies List" and decades later the <a href="http://arts.gov/honors/medals/norman-lear">National Medal of the Arts</a> from President Bill Clinton.</p><p>Today, Lear is 92 years old and as sharp as ever. He recently published his memoir, "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1594205728/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1594205728&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=thebusiinsi-20&amp;linkId=ZJD22OB6DPDKGNQJ" target="_blank">Even This I Get to Experience</a>," a brutally honest yet funny and sentimental look back on his life.</p><p>Business Insider spoke with Lear to discuss some of the most important lessons he's learned.</p><h3>Appreciate the absurdity of it all.</h3><p>Lear called his maternal grandmother <em>Bubbe</em>, and he considers her the first person in his life to truly express her love to him. A favorite saying of hers was "Go know," which in Yiddish is <em>geh vays</em>, and <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/25/magazine/25wwlnsafire.t.html?_r=0">is akin to the English phrase "Go figure."</a></p><p>But when his <em>Bubbe</em> said it to him, she didn't mean it as a put-down, but rather a means of "expressing her gratitude for the bounty of the universe, for yet another gift she could not have imagined," Lear writes.</p><p>Whether she was responding with "go know" to the news that the Brooklyn Dodgers won the World Series (she didn't follow baseball) or that Lear's career had taken off, she was expressing her belief that she wasn't going to understand it all, but that was perfectly fine.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_left"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div><p>"As life has teased and surprised me over the years, I have taken my grandmother's 'go know' with me everywhere," Lear writes. "When I've been recognized in restaurants and at airline counters, I have often thought, 'Go know.'"</p><h3>You can sink or you can swim.</h3><p>When Lear was 9 years old, he saw his father arrested and brought to jail for selling fake government bonds.</p><p>His mother sent him to live with her brother and then her parents in New Haven, Connecticut, while she lived with his sister in Hartford. He remained there for the three years his dad was in prison and says he barely saw his mom and sister.</p><p>Lear says that being confronted with this situation forced him to adopt a level of independence well beyond his years.</p><p>He's reminded of a pulp action story he read as a boy with a title that, despite being a cliché, really connected with him during this time. It was called "Sink or Swim."</p><p>"And that was my option: sink or swim," he says. "I was going to swim. I wasn't going to sink."</p><p>Lear says that this difficult period shaped his worldview for the rest of his life.</p><h3>Recognize that you have influence over people's lives.</h3><p>Lear's celebrity helped him appreciate the power that everyone has over the people they interact with, and it has nothing to do with fame. Lear shares a story that illustrates the point.</p><p>In 1969 in Greenfield, Iowa, he filmed "Cold Turkey," a comedy he considers among his best work. He returned to the town for its 30th anniversary with a few of its stars, including Dick Van Dyke, and he met a woman who had a bit part in the film when she was 6 years old. She told him how important his selection of her for the part was to her, and he found it sweet.</p><p><a href="http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/local/kyle-munson/2014/12/14/norman-lear-greenfield-cold-turkey-theater/20371207/"> Lear visited Greenfield once again last year</a> in his book tour and again encountered the woman, now 51, who mentioned her bit part. Lear explains:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">She's standing with me, and there are tears in her eyes as she starts to say, "You know, I told you years ago what that meant to me, your picking me out of all those other kids to do this. You heard me and you were kind, but you didn't get it. And I read your book, and I'm going to tell you now and you're going to get it." I couldn't get over it. I had no idea what she was going to say.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">She said, "Your father was away... you were with your family who paid no attention to you... You had a gray and blue sweatshirt and when you put that on in the late afternoon or early evening, you felt the comfort and the warmth. You felt taller and you felt thinner and you felt better looking... and you felt like you belonged. What that sweatshirt meant to you is what your selecting me to do the film meant to me." And I got it. I got it.</p><p>When Lear was making the film, his casting of a little girl for a montage was a relatively minor decision he didn't dwell on. But it changed that girl's life in a profound way. His chat with her 45 years later proved to him that even our smallest actions - what we say to a stranger in an elevator or the cashier at a café - have an effect on people, and that we should therefore be mindful of our influence.</p><p><em>"The Jeffersons" was a spin-off of "All in the Family." Lear was inspired to focus a show around a black family's rise in society after some members of the Black Panthers told him they were angry that shows like Lear's "Good Times" were propagating a stereotype of African-Americans relegated solely to poverty. Here are the opening credits to the first season of "The Jeffersons":</em></p><div><div></div></div><p class="embed-spacer"></p><h3>You can't predict how things will turn out.</h3><p>Lear wasn't the type who envisioned himself as a star. After serving in World War II, he was inspired by his uncle Jack to become a publicist, so that he could work in the entertainment industry he loved without becoming a celebrity himself.</p><p>When asked when he realized he wanted to be a television writer, he replies plainly, "I was a young guy with a family, and I wanted to make a living. That's what it was all about at the beginning - just making a living."</p><p>"It was the dawn of television," he says. After a single writing credit he and his partners officially became television comedy writers, "and suddenly we were wanted in all directions."</p><h3>Be true to yourself.</h3><p>Lear is remembered for making black sitcoms part of American life in the 1970s with "Sanford and Son," "The Jeffersons," and "Good Times," as well as using these and other shows as vehicles for edgy comedy on topics like sexuality and crime. But Lear scoffs at the idea that he was trying to push boundaries. He was just writing what he knew, and people responded to it.</p><p>"I saw the comedy in life and the foolishness of the human condition, and I was just dealing with what I saw around me," he says. "I wasn't making up anything to break a barrier. What I saw around this culture were the race problems and economic problems and health problems, and so forth."</p><p>He adds that the interpersonal issues he gave his characters came from his own life - Archie Bunker is a cartoon version of his dad, for example. "I dealt with that because it's what I knew."</p><p>And when President Richard Nixon publicly criticized what he perceived as culture-damaging vulgarity in Lear's programs, Lear took it as "a badge of honor."</p><div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div><h3>It's worth putting in effort to balance family with work.</h3><p>As Lear considers his first two marriages and how he raised his children during the height of his fame, he sees himself as a "dissociated father." Between his sitcoms and his wife and kids, he had "five families on the air and one on Mooncrest Drive" in Los Angeles.</p><p>"On Mooncrest Drive they woke up, they got dressed themselves, I helped them with breakfast, and they went off to school," he says. He says that unfortunately, he was concentrated on his work, not his family - and he doesn't see it as a necessary sacrifice.</p><p>"Had I known more at the time, and had I been able to stand off and view it - had I not been dissociated, as I put it - I would've given less time to the shows, and they would've been just fine," he says. And he would have been more present with his family, which he considers entirely different from just being there physically.</p><h3>Live in the present.</h3><p>This lesson is one Lear learned late in life but one he wishes he had known when he was younger. He considers achieving this state to be the highlight of his career, because it's allowed him to be happy. It's why he chose the book title "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1594205728/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1594205728&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=thebusiinsi-20&amp;linkId=ZJD22OB6DPDKGNQJ" target="_blank">Even This I Get to Experience</a>," a phrase he says he had running through his head when he was in a rough patch financially.</p><p>He's learned to savor everything he can from life's ups and downs.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div><p>"Success is a moment by moment thing," he says. "So you wake up in the morning, and before the kids go to school, you connect with them. They leave the house feeling they have connected with the parents, and you feel good about having connected with your kids... What we have to remember in such cases is to pat ourselves on the back figuratively for having had a great moment, and move onto the next moment.</p><p>"A successful day is a day in which you're feeling good about yourself and your life."</p><h3>Never stop learning about who you are.</h3><p>When asked how he's managed to stay so sharp, Lear replies, "I haven't stopped learning about myself and my life. I think the vertical journey into oneself never ends."</p><p>He sees life as a simultaneous horizontal and vertical journey. Horizontal in the sense of learning more about the world, about others, and about a craft; vertical in the sense of learning more about who you really are.</p><p>Lear says that the vertical journey "might end at death - and we don't even know that - but it's the deeper and more satisfying journey than the horizontal one."
