We thought we'd take a different approach.

Wall Street bonuses were more than double the combined annual earnings of 895,000 full-time minimum wage workers last year

If you found an old $20 bill in the back of a drawer, you'd probably fish it out and use it, right? How about $1 billion?
That's how much money is floating around unused every year in wallets, closets, and coat pockets in the form of <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/1-billion-in-gift-cards-go-unredeemed-2013-11-27">unredeemed gift cards</a>. According to research firm CEB TowerGroup, Americans spent <a href="http://www.executiveboard.com/exbd/financial-services/tower-group/gift-cards/index.page">$118 billion on gift cards in 2013</a>, a number that exceeds the GDP of 136 countries, and $1 billion of that goes unused.
"People need to remember that gift cards are, in essence, cash," says Odysseas Papadimitriou, CEO of the credit card and gift card website CardHub.
Thanks to the proliferation of online gift exchanges, card swaps, and card-for-cash services, getting money for an unwanted gift card is easier than ever. Plus, thanks to the <a href="http://www.cardhub.com/edu/card-act-gift-card-protections/">CARD Act</a>, retailers are prohibited from setting expiration dates on cards earlier than five years from the date of issuance. 
What does that mean for you? Here are three easy ways to turn those forgotten cards into cash:
1. Sell them on an online gift exchange. "Selling gift cards that you aren't going to use is a great way to free up some room in your budget, pay off some debt, or accelerate savings," says Papadimitriou. Online gift card exchanges such as <a href="http://www.cardhub.com/">CardHub</a>, <a href="https://www.abcgiftcards.com/store/index.php?main_page=sell_your_cards">ABC Gift Cards</a>, and <a href="http://www.cardpool.com/">Cardpool</a> let consumers sell their gift cards for up to 95% of the original value and receive cash or Amazon gift cards in exchange. Depending on the store the gift card is for, you may have to mail the plastic card in, but in many cases just typing in the card number works. You're then paid through PayPal or by check. 
2. Donate the funds to charity. While certain charities, like Goodwill, will accept donations in the form of gift cards themselves, some gift card exchanges are teaming up with specific charities to allow consumers to donate the value of their cards directly to that organization. In 2009, Plastic Jungle <a href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/20/an-easy-way-to-donate-unwanted-gift-cards-to-schools/">gave users the option</a> of donating the full face value of their gift cards to DonorsChoose, an organization that crowdsources funds for classrooms across the country. Even if a particular charity will not accept a gift card, you can always redeem it through a card-for-cash program and donate the resulting goods. 
3. Save money later by re-gifting. The holidays may be over, but Valentine's Day is right around the corner. If you think an unwanted gift card has someone else's name written all over it, tie a big red bow around it and give it in place of chocolates. (Given how many people are on diets these days, it'll probably get a better reception.) Most stores allow you to trade in old gift cards for new ones, so there is no need to worry about giving a card bearing outdated branding.
Whatever you do, says Papadimitriou, "just don't let all that free money disappear!"

Leaving expense reports to the last minute. Waiting to file expense reports is an accident waiting to happen. You could easily lose cab or meal receipts and wind up footing the bill out of your own pocket. Plus, there are often cash-only expenses that aren't as easy to keep tabs on without a physical receipt. Using the wrong credit card. Foreign transaction fees are any traveler's worst nightmare. That's the fee your lender will slap on every transaction you make in a different country. In fact, for parents willing to take a gamble on prepaid debit cards to teach their kids how to manage money, it may have a lot to offer. 
Here's the main reason why: 
Yes, there are fees. But they actually pay for something.
Like all prepaid debit cards, Bieber's SpendSmart card comes with its fair share of fees –– including a $3.95 monthly usage fee, a $1.50 ATM fee, and a $7.95 replacement fee, to name a few. 
But unlike other cards, which are basically charging you for the privilege of letting them store your cash, parents are actually getting something in return here.

This card could certainly be a useful tool for parents looking to teach their kids to manage money, especially if they don't quite trust them to handle their own bank account yet.
That being said, it's always wise to exhaust all of your other options first. Try a web tool like <a href="http://www.tykoon.com/" target="_blank">Tykoon</a>, perhaps. For free, it lets you <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tykoon-teaches-kids-about-money-2012-5" target="_blank">track your child's allowance</a> and makes sure kids save and donate a portion of their earnings each month.

After reading just about everything about the card I could get my hands on, I have to say ... yes. 
Here's the main reason why:

The card not only lets parents get <a href="https://www.billmyparents.com/how-it-works/" target="_blank">text alerts</a> every time their kid swipes their card, but they can also set up recurring deposits to the account, <a href="https://www.billmyparents.com/how-it-works/" target="_blank">track their spending</a> from their smartphone, <a href="https://www.billmyparents.com/how-it-works/" target="_blank">lock and unlock</a> the card whenever they want, and block the card from working at certain retailers (say, a liquor store or bar).
This card could certainly be a useful tool for parents looking to teach their kids to manage money, especially if they don't quite trust them to handle their own bank account yet.
That being said, it's always wise to exhaust all of your other options first. Try a web tool like <a href="http://www.tykoon.com/" target="_blank">Tykoon</a>, perhaps. For free, it lets you <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tykoon-teaches-kids-about-money-2012-5" target="_blank">track your child's allowance</a> and makes sure kids save and donate a portion of their earnings each month. Justin Bieber's New Debit Card Is Surprisingly Decent

The <keyword id="6355284" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="senate">Senate</keyword> opened the floor for a new round of debates on the hotly contested <a href="http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c113:S.743:" target="_blank">Marketplace Fairness Act</a>, which would create the first national Internet <keyword id="47069" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="sales-tax">sales tax</keyword>.
The bill would basically level the playing field for online and brick-and-mortar retailers, charging customers sales tax on purchases both online and in stores (find your state's sales tax rate <a href="http://www.bankrate.com/finance/taxes/check-taxes-in-your-state.aspx" target="_blank">here</a>).
Small business proponents hate the bill and taxpayer advocates say it would just give state and local governments another way to dip their hands into our pockets –– to the tune of <a href="http://blog.heritage.org/2013/04/22/morning-bell-internet-sales-tax-is-a-state-money-grab/" target="_blank">$23 billion per year.</a>
But forget the <keyword id="6358883" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Politics">politics</keyword> for a minute. What's a national Internet sales tax going to mean for your wallet? 
From a shopper's point of view, an Internet sales tax would be more of a nuisance than a total disaster. For the most part, lots of online retailers already charge sales tax anyway, including heavyweights like Groupon, Amazon (for 38% of customers) and BestBuy.com.
The Elephant in the room, eBay, has been lobbying hard against the new tax, but that's mostly because of the damage it could do to small businesses that utilize the site.
"The new landscape wouldn't really have an adverse effect on consumers in the long run," said Odysseas Papadimitriou of <a href="http://www.cardhub.com" target="_blank">Cardhub.com</a>. "Sure, online prices might end up being a bit higher initially, but the change would also reinvigorate competition throughout the retail sector, ultimately benefiting local communities and their residents." 
And what about the biggest online shopping day of the year –– Cyber Monday? 
Shoppers spent a record $1.5 billion on Cyber Monday last year, making it the heaviest online spending day in history, according to <a href="http://www.comscore.com/Insights/Press_Releases/2012/11/Cyber_Monday_Spending_Soars_to_1.46_Billion" target="_blank">ComScore</a>.
Electronics are among the hottest buys of the post-Thanksgiving Day weekend, and for consumers on the prowl for big ticket items like computers and televisions, we can't help but wonder if a new sales tax might become a prohibitive factor.
Only time will tell, but most experts we spoke with downplayed the impact of a new tax. 
"This will have essentially no impact on Black Friday and Cyber Monday," <a href="http://www.dealnews.com" target="_blank">Dealnews.com</a> CEO Daniel de Grandpre told us. "Commerce is moving online for Black Friday and Cyber Monday not because of sales tax but because of the fiercely competitive pricing that happens online during the week ... So many more offers are being thrown about by online and multi-channel retailers during that week — and so many of the deals are significantly better than the preceding weeks — that sales tax becomes little more than noise." 
To cope, the most likely scenario is that retailers will simply start offering "free sales tax" promos to lure in customers, much like free shipping has become such a phenomenon.
The bottom online: The new Internet sales tax won't get passed without a fight, but the battleground is mostly reserved for small business owners and the state governments that desperately need a new source of revenue. Consumers, for the time being, don't have all that much to worry about.

Here's What A National Internet Sales Tax Will Cost You

The simple answer is that it's nothing good. In fact, after doing some digging, we're pretty sure you'd be better off filling out your tax forms in crayon than <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/where-last-minute-taxpayers-are-most-likely-to-screw-up-this-year-2012-4" target="_blank">sitting on your hands</a> and letting the <keyword id="6359816" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="IRS">IRS</keyword> have at you. 
“There’s simply no hiding from the IRS," says Odysseas Papadimitriou, CEO of Cardhub.com. "Level with yourself as well as the IRS about your ability to pay, pick a payment option that makes the most sense, and make sure to honor the terms of your agreement.”
Just in case you were curious, here's what happens if you don't:
You haven't filed your taxes at all. Skip filing all together and you're already looking at paying a 5 percent monthly fee on however much you owe. It maxes out at 25 percent. If you wait more than 60 days to file, then you'll get hit with a $135 fine, or 100 percent of the taxes you owe (whichever is less).
You've gotten a filing extension but haven't paid your taxes. Even if you've gotten an extension to file your taxes by Oct. 15, that doesn't mean you get six extra months to pay. The IRS levies a 0.5% fee on your unpaid taxes every month until the balance is paid, PLUS at least 3% in interest that is compounded daily. Ouch.
If you have filed an extension to file AND have paid at least 90% of your tax bill by April 15, however, this penalty doesn't apply. But it doubles if the IRS issues a letter demanding immediate payment. 
You haven't filed your taxes OR paid your tax bill. In this case, you have two strikes against you. The IRS will calculate penalties for both and then subtract the late payment fee from your late filing fee. The $135 late charge for filing after 60 days still applies.
You've filed your taxes by April 15 but still haven't paid. First of all, hats off to you for at least filing. The IRS looks kindly on taxpayers who file, even if they can't pay straightaway. On-time filers get a discounted penalty rate of 0.25% per month so long as they have a payment agreement in place.
You've filed your taxes and you want to pay your bill in increments. The IRS does have monthly payment plans for taxpayers who can't fork over funds for their entire bill straightaway. But there are some caveats to consider: An application fee that ranges from $52 to $105, and the late payment and interest charges of 0.05% and 3%, respectively. You can set up a payment plan online <a href="http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Online-Payment-Agreement-Application" target="_blank">here</a>.
Another option would be to consider paying your bill on a 0% interest credit card –– but only if you plan on paying your bill before the promotional period ends. <a href="http://www.irs.gov/uac/Pay-Taxes-by-Credit-or-Debit-Card" target="_blank">One-time credit/debt card fees apply</a>.
Your only way out: If you want a free pass on paying or filing your taxes on time, you're going to have to come up with a better excuse than a sick day. Per the IRS, you'll need proof of a "reasonable cause" rather than forgetfulness. And don't kid yourself into thinking you're off the hook if a month goes by and no IRS lackeys come calling. It can take anywhere from six months to a year for the agency to catch up to late payers. 
And if you've decided to ignore Uncle Sam because you think you won't be able to afford your payment, you're better off at least <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/spend-save-or-invest-heres-the-best-way-to-spend-your-tax-refund-2012-4" target="_blank">knowing what you're up against</a>. There are plenty of <a href="http://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/calculators/taxcaster/" target="_blank">tax estimate tools</a> available which will give you an idea of what you'll owe or be owed.

Here's What Happens When People Don't File Their Taxes

That may seem like a fortune to budget travelers, but there are plenty of hidden costs associated with traveling for work that have nothing to do with food or shelter.
Like any craft, learning the ins and outs of saving on business travel takes time. To help, we've rounded up a few of the most common mistakes rookies make that could wind up costing them. 
Leaving expense reports to the last minute. Waiting to file expense reports is just an accident waiting to happen. You could easily lose cab or meal receipts and wind up footing the bill out of your own pocket, and there are often cash-only expenses that aren't as easy to keep tabs on without a physical receipt. To make your life easier, download an app like <a href="https://www.expensify.com/" target="_blank">Expensify</a> or <a href="http://lemon.com/plans/business/" target="_blank">Lemon</a> to snap photos and download receipts along the way. When you've finished your trip, it takes only a few minutes to categorize expenses and organize them into a shareable spreadsheet.
Forgetting to deduct expenses at tax time. If your company's per diem for food and lodging isn't ample enough for your tastes, don't forget that you can still get a <a href="http://biztaxlaw.about.com/od/taxdeductionsatoz/a/travelexpenses.htm" target="_blank">tax break for business-related expenses</a>. Just do your homework first to find out what qualifies (Hint: That dinner cruise or sight-seeing expense probably won't fly with Uncle Sam). 
Traveling without your own WiFi hotspot. When you're on business, time is money. Don't waste precious minutes wandering around trying to find a working WiFi connection or cell phone reception. Ask your employer to outfit your computer with a WiFi hotspot. We're fans of the <a href="http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2402900,00.asp" target="_blank">Verizon Jetpack 4G LTE MiFi</a>. 
Forgetting to let your bank in on your itinerary. There's nothing worse than swiping your credit card overseas only to be denied because you just tripped your bank's anti-fraud detector. It takes a few minutes to call up your bank before traveling to let them know your destination and to be ready to see some international transactions.
Using currency exchange counters. No matter what the glossy currency exchange counters tell you, they won't offer the most competitive rates. Take out cash from ATMs to get the most bang for your buck, or simply use your credit card when possible. 
Using the wrong credit card. Foreign transaction fees are any traveler's worst nightmare. That's the fee your lender will slap on every transaction you make in a different country. Taking unnecessary trips for the sake of it. This is 2013, not 1993. There's no reason to waste time and money to fly cross country for a meeting that could just as easily be conducted online or via web cam. Unless you're truly hankering for an excuse to get out of the office, you could win major points from your boss by trimming expenses and taking your business affairs into the digital age.
Neglecting your body's needs. Business travel shouldn't be all work and no rest. Take care of your body along the way by giving yourself time to adjust to time differences and rejigger your sleep schedule. Bring an eye mask and splurge on first class reclining seats if you must. You'll be less likely to make rookie mistakes with a solid seven hours of sleep. That goes double for your diet. Because taste bud sensitivity diminishes with altitude, airplane food is often loaded with extra sodium and flavoring to make it more palatable. Do your gut a favor and bring healthy snacks along with you and try to find a solid meal outside of an airport terminal.
