<img class="gwt-Image" src="/photo/50137693.cms" />For YPO member Subra Eassuwaren, CEO of tea and spice export company Eswaran Brothers Exports (Pvt) Ltd, humble beginnings are not just myth; they are part of his legacy. 
 
The company was founded in 1943 by Eassuwaren’s grandfather, VTV Deivanayagam Pillai. Born in 1919 in South India, VTV was orphaned at the age of 12, moved to (then) colonial Ceylon, began working as a shop boy and through hard work and a dedication to spirituality, became the leader of one of the most respected trading houses in Sri Lanka. This family lineage of dedication to work and higher self is at the center of what makes the company successful today. 
 
“In 2007 when we were trying to map out the core values and principles of our company, we talked about how my grandfather practiced corporate social responsibility. At the time, it wasn’t going into annual reports – looking after people around you was just what you did,” says Eassuwaren, who joined the YPO Colombo Chapter in the South Asia Region in 2013. 
 
“We decided to make this one of our key selling points and build on the idea of responsibility which led to us to becoming the most sustainable tea company in the world.” 
 
Most tea plantations are monocultures, the cultivation or growth of a single crop or organism. Monocultures can take a toll on the earth, upsetting the local ecological balance by eradicating the natural plants and animals, which feed each other the chemicals and minerals required to thrive. Eliminating this natural cycle from an ecosystem requires artificial fertilizers, used to boost crop yields at a great expense to local biodiversity. 
 
In direct opposition to this are Eswaran’s plantations, with their commitment to protecting the environment for generations to come through a dedication to ecological design, engineering and integrated water resources management. 
 
In order to achieve this, the company set themselves targets to ensure they were improving their indicator species; the more types of plants flourishing, the better likelihood of attracting a variety of butterflies. If frogs are alive and well in the soil, it means the water is relatively clean, and the more dragonflies in the ecosystem, the better it is doing.

Eswaran’s recent efforts to “water footprint” their tea products led them to focus sustainability endeavors not just on operational water usage, but water usage throughout the supply chain. Eswaran Brothers studied their grey water – the volume of water required to dilute pollution, green water – the amount of water incorporated into the product, and blue water – surface water or water taken from ground in order to mitigate environmental impact. 
 Eswaran Brothers achieved a major milestone in December 2010, when they became one of the first tea companies globally, and the first company in Sri Lanka, to achieve CarbonNeutral certification for their product, <keyword id="3168322" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tea-so-tea">Tea so Tea</keyword>. A Fair Trade, <keyword id="3168323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="carbon-positive-tea">carbon positive tea</keyword>, made as sustainable as possible by using only biodegradable materials and inks, offsets your personal footprint with every pack you buy. 
 
“We call it ‘cradle to grave,’” says Eassuwaren. “The tea leaf is plucked, we make it, package it, ship it and place it on a shelf where somebody buys it, makes the tea then throws it away where it decomposes and creates carbon dioxide.” 
 
Eswaran Brothers have partnered with the Conservation Carbon Company and Rainforests Rescue International to institute the Hiniduma Conservation Carbon Programme, which will grow endemic forest trees to protect against fragmentation, eventually reversing the process of centuries of deforestation. 
 
“We studied a handful of farmers’ lands and then gave them trees to plant, both cash crops and forest trees. In order to qualify for the program the farmers had to come to training with us where they learned the benefits of organic farming, and the importance of biodiversity.” 
 
Eswaran Brothers’ dedication to impact the environment has led to the creation of a product that, itself, speaks the language of positivity. 
 
“Tea is a plant that only benefits the people and the environment around it,” says Eassuwaren.

Winner of the Junior Chamber International 10 outstanding young Sri Lankans of 2011 award for the environment, the Eswaran Brothers were the recipients of the 2012 Responsible Business category of the Social Pioneer awards organized by the United Nations, Global Compact and were highly commended in the prestigious United Kingdom Energy and Environment Awards. 
 
“There’s a long way to go and we are bumping and learning along the path,” says Eassuwaren. “But the idea is to create something that only does good.”

Beyond Organic: The Business of Fair Trade, Carbon Negative Teas

<ul><li><keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>’s central bank has vowed to maintain intense regulatory pressure on <keyword id="6357017" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="cryptocurrency">cryptocurrency</keyword> trading and speculation.</li><li>Starting May 2021, the country has actively cracked down on cryptocurrency trading and mining, dealing a massive blow to crypto exchanges, mining firms, and investors.</li><li>By going after miners, the communist state is setting a precedent that it won't tolerate any cryptocurrency-related activities and that the future shall lie in CBDC.</li><li>The government says that investor protection, carbon neutrality, and financial stability are the three critical factors for the new regulations.</li></ul>The People's Bank of China (<keyword id="131486" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="PBOC">PBoC</keyword>) <a href="http://www.pbc.gov.cn/goutongjiaoliu/113456/113469/4307709/index.html">said in a meeting on Saturday </a>that the central bank would "maintain high pressure on virtual currency trading hype." In a meeting, the PBOC asked the banks and other payment institutions such as AliPay not to be involved in <a href="https://wazirx.com/signup?invite=2kpah6gr&amp;utm_source=business-insider&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=microsite&amp;is_retargeting=false&amp;shortlink=BI&amp;c=site&amp;pid=Business%20Insider&amp;af_click_lookback=7d&amp;af_channel=Business%20Insider&amp;af_adset=article&amp;af_force_deeplink=true">cryptocurrency </a>operations. In simpler words, anyone engaging in cryptocurrency operations would see their accounts disabled by the banks and other payment institutions. China has opposed cryptocurrencies for years, but its displeasure was limited to on-paper restrictions. Starting May 2021, the country has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/cryptocurrency/news/chinas-inner-mongolia-region-proposed-punishments-for-companies-and-individuals-involved-in-crypto-mining/articleshow/83034373.cms">actively cracked down</a> on cryptocurrency trading and mining, dealing a massive blow to crypto exchanges, mining firms, and investors. Banks were told to not provide products or services such as trading, clearing and settlement for cryptocurrency transactions. Coming from the State Council's Financial Stability Committee, China's highest level financial regulator led by vice-premier Liu He, the new cryptocurrency crackdown is a significant upgrade of existing regulations. According to a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/agbank-falls-step-with-chinas-cryptocurrency-crackdown-2021-06-21/">Reuters </a>report, Agriculture Bank of China (AgBank), China's third-largest lender by assets, said it would follow the guidelines from the PBoC and clamp down on crypto trading and mining activities. The bank suggested that any client found to be involved in crypto mining or trading operations would have their accounts shut down immediately. China has long been cautious about creating bubbles that could potentially burst and lead to instability, a financial crisis. China has historically cracked down on more straightforward commodities like <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-53840167">garlic, tea</a>, and even <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/china-hails-victory-in-crackdown-on-peer-to-peer-lending-11607515547">peer-to-peer loans.</a> The PBoC convened representatives of multiple establishments, including state-owned commercial banks and private entities such as Alipay, and told them to "strictly implement" recent notices and guidelines from authorities on curbing risks tied to cryptocurrency transactions. The government began by banning crypto exchanges from operating in the country and initial coin offerings (ICOs). China’s crackdown on cryptocurrency trading will continue as its central bank raises the heat on financial institutions

They mean, respectively, that the product meets some regulatory standards that ensure products are organic, or fair trade (broadly defined as paying one's producers fairly).The team behind a nonprofit called <a href="https://www.climateneutral.org/about">Climate Neutral</a>, established in 2018, wants to become the greenhouse gas emissions equivalent of those recognized labels. They've created a label called "Climate Neutral Certified," where consumers know they are buying from a company that is actively measuring, reducing, and offsetting its carbon footprint. Currently, there are similar certifications out there, such as the <a href="http://www.ecolabelindex.com/ecolabel/carbon-reduction-label">Carbon Reduction Label</a> and the <a href="http://www.ecolabelindex.com/ecolabel/carbonneutral">Carbon Neutral</a> label, but Climate Neutral thinks those labels don't go far enough. Climate Neutral requires nonprofits to offset all <a href="https://www.climateneutral.org/faq#other-questions">three scopes</a>, or types, of emissions laid out by the <a href="https://ghgprotocol.org/">Greenhouse Gas Protocol,</a> the most widely used international accounting tool for leaders to quantify greenhouse gas emissions. The team also requires companies to recertify every year. To date, at least 75 brands and companies are Climate Neutral Certified, including bread maker Bread Alone, tea company Numi Organic Tea, and mattress company Avocado Green Mattress. Others have committed to joining, including shoe company Allbirds. The name of the nonprofit, and its label, is a play on the phrase "carbon neutral," which means the company has "net zero emissions," or that the CO2 the company is producing is no greater than the amount of CO2 it's re-absorbing from the atmosphere through offsets. Minimizing a company's carbon emissions is imperative to slowing down <keyword id="6361617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-change">climate change</keyword>, which is linked to stronger hurricanes, more intense wildfires, and polar ice melt, to name a few. The more carbon dioxide that's in the atmosphere, the less sunlight and heat can escape into space. This trapped heat effectively cooks the planet.An example of offsetting one's carbon footprint would be to fund a wind farm project that generates clean energy or to plant an acre of trees (trees absorb CO2).<div type="image" title="Climate Neutral Certified" height="500" width="1000" msid="75308266" hostid="261"></div>To become Climate Neutral Certified a company has to do three things, according to the nonprofit.<ol><li>Measure how much the company is currently producing in CO2 emissions. </li><li>Offset emissions by purchasing carbon credits for projects such as ones that capture biogas from livestock, capture methane gas from landfills, or restore degraded forests. </li><li>Make steps to reduce emissions going forward through resources Climate Neutral has. </li></ol>Business Insider recently spoke with Austin Whitman, CEO of Climate Neutral, to learn more about the nonprofit's mission. This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.<h2>Whitman's vision is to have the "Climate Neutral Certified" label be as recognizable as the "USDA Organic" label.</h2><h2><div type="image" title="grocery store" height="2419" width="3500" msid="75308268" hostid="261"></div></h2>Marguerite Ward: Tell me about the conversation that led to Climate Neutral, and the idea for a label?Austin Whitman: The initial spark for Climate Neutral came when our founders and two lead funders, [Peter Dearing of outdoor product company Peak Design and Jonathan Cedar of energy company BioLite], traded notes about taking their companies through the process of measuring and offsetting their carbon footprints. They both realized it costs more to hire a consultant to measure your carbon footprint than it does to offset the entire thing. So most companies don't do it at all — and that's a problem. The second was a realization that there is nothing like a USDA Organic label for climate. That's also a problem, considering the extreme problem of climate change. Consumers just haven't been engaged effectively as part of the solution. They are thirsty for ways to make a difference, but they've been seeing the same list of solutions for the past three decades: "Recycle! Walk, don't drive! Lower your thermostat!"<blockquote class="pullquote">Policy is not working at a level and on a timescale that we need.</blockquote>Ward: The goal is to have Climate Neutral Certified become as common and recognizable as the organic certified or fair trade certified label you see on products right? Whitman: Yes, that's right. Every company in every sector has a carbon footprint, and Climate Neutral Certified can be applied to virtually any type of company.Ward: Why create a label, why not perhaps take other avenues like pushing for tighter regulation or policy? Whitman: It's not an either/or decision. Companies and individuals should be pushing for better policy. But climate change first became a subject of policy debates more than a half a century ago, and we still have no policy. It's not that we haven't had the facts. Modern climate science is 40 years old, we just haven't had the political will. So policy is not working at a level and on a timescale that we need. Businesses and consumers can move much, much faster than policy.<h2>Whitman says having concrete guidelines for businesses will fight corporate greenwashing. </h2><div type="image" title="Solar power" height="2143" width="3647" msid="75308270" hostid="261"></div>Ward: Is there a lot of greenwashing going on in the corporate world? Tell me what you're seeing going on.Whitman: Greenwashing [the act of making marketing claims that overstate a company's environmental commitments] is difficult to quantify, but it does happen. In the 18 months since interest in climate change began to rise, we have seen many many commitments, pledges, and promises by companies to address their carbon pollution. We see greenwashing take two forms. Some companies count only a tiny share of their carbon footprint when they claim to have made progress against climate change. Some companies claim credit for making promises that will come due 40 or 50 years from now. We are trying to rectify both of these by requiring companies to count all of their emissions, including emissions in their supply chain, and by requiring companies to take immediate steps to achieve a net-zero carbon balance for their operations. Both of these are far better aligned with what's necessary to deal with climate change in a meaningful way.Ward: But there's a lot of positive change, too, right?Whitman: Oh absolutely. The biggest difference in what's happening now is that people from all professions and industries are paying attention, learning about climate change, feeling a sense of urgency, building communities around climate concerns, and in some cases reorienting their entire careers around this vexing global problem. I think that sort of groundswell of awareness and change is what will make this a structural, long-term shift toward taking climate change into account in how we shop, how we vote, where we live, and so many other decisions that humans make. This is where we see companies and consumers working hand-in-hand: companies can embrace this new consumer trend and reinforce it, helping it to gain critical and irreversible momentum. <h2>Fighting climate change now is cheaper than dealing with the effects later, the CEO says. </h2><div type="image" title="A helicopter operates over a wildfire in Canary Islands, Spain, Monday, Aug. 19, 2019." height="1335" width="2000" msid="75308271" hostid="261"></div>Ward: How does Climate Neutral sustain itself? Do you take a commission from businesses who are a part of the coalition?Whitman: We're a lean nonprofit, entirely donation funded for the moment, through a combination of grants and individual donations. We promised not to charge companies this year to get certified. We do charge a small commission to arrange carbon offsets for our certified companies. As we grow, and as we prove that our label has value to companies, we will look to become more self-sustaining, but grants will continue to play a critical role in our funding model for the foreseeable future.Ward: Why should a company be a part of your mission? How do you respond to critics who argue that additional regulation, even if it's self-imposed, would hamper productivity or increase product costs?Whitman: We all need to get over thinking that addressing climate change would be nice but it's just too expensive for us to deal with right now. Of course, it's not free to deal with climate change, but it costs far less than people would imagine. Climate economists estimate that we need investment equal to about 2 to 3% of global GDP every year to achieve the transition we need. Much of that comes in the form of investment that can enhance productivity.And it's certainly far less expensive than it will be to deal with the increasing effects of climate change. Just ask the people who have been affected by any of the massive natural disasters that have happened in the last two years. And there's an important difference in those numbers: spending billions of dollars on storm cleanup costs is emergency spending, not long-term investment. Dealing with climate change proactively gives us a chance to make deliberate investments in the lowest cost and most effective types of solutions. Even if self-imposed regulation adds 2% to product costs, the effect on sales would be minimal.Ward: You have 74 brands committed, right? What's next?Whitman: This Earth Day, we're announcing more than 75 companies are now certified. We have another 50 plus brands committed to getting certified later in the year, and a list of others we've been talking to. We'll continue to recruit more and bigger brands and build consumer awareness of the label. Meet the man trying to make corporate sustainability labels as common as the 'USDA Organic' sticker on milk cartons

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Jungle juice is a punchbowl-type drink that features many different alcohols.</li><li>It's made up primarily of vodka, rum, and various fruit-flavored drinks.</li><li>Spritz the jungle juice with some club soda to add carbonation and lengthen the drink's life.</li></ul>If there's one "<keyword id="12298951" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cocktail" source="Orion">cocktail</keyword>" everyone's most likely consumed, but probably never ordered at a bar, it's the perennially famous (and in some cases infamous) jungle juice. An everything-but-the-kitchen-sink type drink, jungle juice is a mix between a Long Island iced tea punch bowl and a sangria. It most likely started in the basements and apartments of college students as a creative concoction to overindulge, while also making use of any leftover alcohol or beverages people were trying to get rid of. "[Jungle juice] really truly is an assortment of all different kinds of alcohol, and it's always mixed with sugary additives from juices, fruits, things like that," says Julianna McIntosh, owner and mixologist of <a href="https://www.instagram.com/join_jules/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Join_Jules</a>. "It really is just an easy way for people to make a big batch drink for at home parties."This hodge podge approach brings about many different iterations of jungle juice, with some opting for flavored liqueurs or rums while others even add in various gummy candies. "It's a punch bowl with a lot of different types of alcohols in it, and that doesn't necessarily have to have this negative connotation," McIntosh says. "There's not one recipe that is the original recipe. It's your own interpretation of what jungle juice is, which is kind of fun."<h2>Best alcohol for jungle juice</h2>McIntosh recommends starting with a neutral spirit like vodka or a grain alcohol like Everclear, since it doesn't impart much flavor and can serve as a solid base. From there, she says, you can start getting creative."When I think of jungle juice, I think tropical," McIntosh says. "So I think rum is a really great thing to add." While McIntosh typically uses dark rum in her jungle juice, you can also try white, spiced, and flavored rum for a little extra kick.Quick tip: McIntosh warns would-be mixologists to steer clear of using Kool Aid packets in jungle juice, especially when mixing with Everclear. "It changes the flavor to where you can't even taste the alcohol," McIntosh says. "So if you're just mixing that with vodka, you're drinking straight vodka."<h2>What you'll need</h2><div type="image" title="Three jugs of fruit-flavored drinks." height="1414" width="1885" msid="87046799" hostid="261"></div>While this is McIntosh's favorite way to make jungle juice, you can use any combination of alcohol, fruit, juice, and even candy you prefer. McIntosh does recommend keeping the alcohol to juice ratio to thirds - ⅓ for the alcohol and ⅔ for the juices - to ensure the safest experience for guests.<ul><li>One bottle of white rum</li><li>One bottle of dark rum</li><li>One bottle of Everclear (optional)</li><li>Five to eight lemons, limes, and oranges (quartered)</li><li>One pineapple (without the outer flesh)</li><li>3 tablespoons of all-spice</li><li>5-7 cinnamon sticks</li><li>1 liter of prune or pomegranate juice</li><li>1 liter of orange juice</li><li>1 liter of pineapple juice</li><li>Ice (to serve on the side)</li></ul>Quick tip: While it's easier to buy juices from the store, McIntosh encourages people to make the juices themselves. "I think that it tastes better when it's fresh," she says. <h2>How to make jungle juice (serves 15 to 20 people)</h2><div type="image" title="An overhead shot of a punchbowl with fruit in it." height="666" width="888" msid="87046802" hostid="261"></div><ol><li>Pour in the alcohol. How to make a fruity jungle juice punchbowl that will be a hit at your next party

<ul class="summary-list"><li>From calorie count to portion sizes, we wanted to find out all the differences between <keyword id="1718857" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Five-Guys">Five Guys</keyword> in the UK and the US.</li><li>Compared to some of the places that we reviewed on this show before, Five Guys is a more expensive option.</li><li>In our case, it seems as if Five Guys' tendency to overfill <keyword id="177068" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Fries">fries</keyword> has been a bit overstated.</li></ul>Following is a transcript of the <keyword id="21654" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="video">video</keyword>.Harry Kersh: From calorie count to portion sizes, we wanted to find out all the differences between Five Guys in the UK and the US. This is "<keyword id="6181" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Food">Food</keyword> Wars."Harry: Burgers from a UK Five Guys come in two sizes. Joe Avella: Five Guys in the US also has two <keyword id="6433444" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="burger">burger</keyword> sizes. Harry: Firstly we have the little, which is just one patty. Joe: And the regular, which is two patties. Harry: Now, our patties are supposed to be lighter than the US patties and should weigh 67 grams. We're gonna weigh one and find out if that's accurate. So, this patty actually weighed 52 grams, which is 15 grams less than what we're supposed to get. Joe: According to the US Five Guys website, they say that one of the patties should weigh 94 grams, or about 3.3 ounces. We will weigh a hamburger patty in the US Five Guys. That's about 52, 53 grams. It looks like our patties weigh just about the same as the ones in the UK. Harry: We're not sure if they measure it before or after cooking. Maybe it's before, and then some of the liquid leaves as it cooks, but either way, not quite what we're expecting.Joe: This right here is a hot dog from a US Five Guys. And before I measure it, what in the heck is this? Did you know this? They cut the hot dog in half? I hate that they cut this in half. Cursed image. OK, how long is this monstrosity? 6 1/4 inches for the hot dog. Harry: So, a hot dog from a UK Five Guys is about 6 inches in length. Now, like the burgers, this has an estimated weight, and it should weigh 146 grams if the website's ingredients information is correct. But ours actually weighs 154 grams, so we're actually getting more than expected. Joe: OK, let's weigh this thing before I throw it in the ocean. We're about a hair over 150. OK. I wanna talk to one of the Five Guys. Get me guy No. 3 or 4, I don't care. I demand to know what is going on with these hot dogs.Joe: A Five Guys chocolate milkshake in the US, I believe it's 12 ounces, let's see what it actually is here. This one's a little bit more, ooh, a little bit more melted. Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Oh, yeah. That's way more than 12, buddy. That's way more than 12. It is just over 450 milliliters. Almost 16 ounces. Harry: This is a milkshake from a UK Five Guys. We're gonna measure it to find out how much you get. Mm, bloop bloop bloop bloop. Oh, look how thick that is. Yes! I want it. Now, the UK portion size is advertised as 454 milliliters. We've got just over 400 here. If we scraped around the side, we could probably get a few more in there as well.Harry: Now, Five Guys in the UK is notorious for overfilling its fry portions. We also get three sizes, little, regular, and large. We ordered all three, and they came in one bag, and here's what we got. Little fries, regular fries, large fries, and this is the rest of the bag. Now, we're not sure which of these fries belongs to which of these portions, so we're gonna try and figure it out. Joe: In the US, we also have three sizes of fries at the Five Guys. The small, the regular, the large, and, yes, so many more fries. Look at that. So, all in all, Five Guys is very generous with the fries. Harry: I mean, I guess I'll start by filling each cup, and then try and portion this into, like, vague threes, I guess. Joe: Yes, that sounds right, I don't know if it is, but I'm just gonna follow Harry's lead on this one. Harry: So, this is roughly what we think would go with each of the portions. Now, in the UK, a regular fries is supposed to weigh 414 grams. We're gonna weigh the cup and then also the extras to see if what you get really is a bonus or if it actually all adds up to the supposed total. 165. Joe: So, first we'll do the scale, right? So, this is supposed to be 411 grams. Let's see what we got. What is this, 170? Woof, guys. That's not even close. Harry: So, our regular cup of fries actually only contained 165 grams, which is less than half of what you're supposed to get. We're gonna weigh the rest of the fries to see if that makes up the difference. So, even with all the bag fries, which we assigned to the regular portion, we're still only looking at 276 grams, which is well below the portion size you're supposed to be getting for a regular. Joe: Excellent idea, Harry, I will do the same. Now we are up to... 275? Still not even -- it's supposed 411? Harry: So, it looks like we've been a bit shortchanged on the fries. Because it was all given to us in one big bag, it's hard to tell which portion came out small. So what we're gonna do is add the little fries to this one, get a total figure for all three portions, and then figure out how much we've been shortchanged overall. So, we've done the maths, and between our large, regular, and little fries, including the bag fries, we only got 830 grams. However, we were supposed to get 1,220 grams, which means we've been shortchanged by roughly a third here. Frygate 2020! Joe: Technically, Harry, this is Frygate 2021. Check the release schedule. With the rest of the bag fries, the large, and the little, so, they gave us 851 grams of fries total. They're supposed to give us 1,225. Hey, Siri, 851 is what percentage of 1,225? Siri: About 69.4693%. Joe: 69%. Nice. Harry: So, at least in our case, it seems as if the generosity of Five Guys has been a bit overstated. Maybe they just overfill smaller containers so you kind of think you're getting more than you should be, whereas in reality, if you measure it all, you're actually maybe getting less.Joe: Let's compare the prices of both Five Guys and see who's getting the better deal. OK, USA, this hamburger costs $9.12. That is way too much money for this burger. Harry: A hamburger from a UK Five Guys will cost you 6 pounds 95, which is equivalent to $9.20. Joe: The prices do seem similar, but it's actually per gram 26% less in the US than it is in the UK. Harry: What about the fries? Well, in the UK, a large fries is 5 pounds 25, which comes to $6.95. Joe: In the US, our Five Guys large after tax is $7.06. You must be joking. Harry: If you do the maths for the fries, it turns out that the US is getting a better deal, but only fractionally. You guys get, like, 1% more value for your money when it comes to the large fries, so, not too mad about that one. Producer: A big draw is that when you're in Five Guys, they have just crates open with peanuts, and while you're waiting your food, you can just scoop some peanuts and just, like, crack the shells open - Joe: What do you even mean? So if you go into the store and you wait, you can eat, like, you can peel and eat peanuts and, what, throw the shells on the floor, like it's a saloon in the 1800s? Who cares? Especially if you're going there to eat, let me fill up in these cheap peanuts before I get this ridiculously priced food. Harry: Compared to some of the places that we reviewed on this show before, Five Guys is a more expensive option, but, I mean, particularly in the UK, I don't feel too mad about paying a bit more for a Five Guys than I might do for a meal at McDonald's. It's just more of a treat, but it does feel a bit more exotic, they've branded themselves as a kind of, like, American import, Americans-know-their-way- around-a-burger sort of thing. So if I go, I know that I'm getting something of a little bit higher quality than maybe a standard fast-food place, even if the prices are gonna cost me more. Joe: I hate Five Guys. The hot dog is ridiculous, I don't care about peanuts, this stuff is way overpriced, forget it.Joe: Let's take a look at the calories of the Five Guys <keyword id="381534" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cheeseburger">cheeseburger</keyword>. This has two patties, two slices of cheese, and a bun, and the total calories is 984. Harry: What about a UK cheeseburger? Well, this one comes to 756 calories, which is more than 200 calories less than the US burger. The US burger doesn't just have more calories, either; it's got pretty much more of everything else. It's got more fat, saturates, and sodium than a cheeseburger in the UK. In the UK, if they actually give you what's advertised on the website, a large portion of fries is a hefty 1,491 calories. But despite that, we still somehow end up with less sodium. Joe: Our large fry in the US is 1,314 calories. I also want to point out our fries come in lower than the UK in terms of fat content as well as saturates. And, finally, we have the drinks. This chocolate shake at a Five Guys in the US is 830 calories. Harry: A chocolate shake in the UK comes to slightly more, at 891 calories. Joe: So, what if we combine all three into a meal? So, a plain cheeseburger, regular fries, and a chocolate shake from Five Guys in the US totals at 2,767 calories. Yo, dog! Also, I think this is about $70. [laughs] Harry: The same meal in the UK? Well, that comes to a total of 2,769 calories, two calories more than in the US. The differences between the burger and the fries effectively cancel each other out.Harry: Let's start with the basics. Here's everything in a hamburger patty from a UK Five Guys. Ground beef. Joe: Here in the US, our burger patty is made up of ground beef. [crickets chirping] Harry: If you prefer to add cheese to your burger, here's what's in the cheese in the UK. Cheddar cheese, water, butter, cheese, milk proteins, whey powder, emulsifying salt , natural cheese flavoring, salt, lactic acid, sorbic acid, beta-carotene, paprika extract, and sunflower lecithin. Joe: Five Guys cheese here in the US is made up of: milk, whey, milk fat, milk protein concentrate, salt, calcium phosphate, sodium citrate, whey protein concentrate, sodium phosphate, sorbic acid, [error ping] apple-call-a-tent-all? What? Apo...car-oh-ten-all? Apocatarnenal. Annatto, enzymes, vitamin D3, and cheese cultures. Harry: The burger buns are also pretty similar. In the UK, a burger bun is made with: wheat flour, water, sugar, vegetable fat, milk, dry yeast, eggs, sesame seeds, salt, soya flour, calcium carbonate, and spirit vinegar. Joe: The bun in the US is made up of: water, salt, sugar, vegetable shortening, milk, eggs, bleached bread flour, yeast, and sesame seeds. Harry: Now, you'd think that the fries would be pretty similar in the two countries, and for the most part you'd be right. In the UK, the fries are made of potatoes, peanut oil, and salt. Joe: The fries at the Five Guys in the US are made from potatoes, refined peanut oil, and salt. Now, when they say "refined peanut oil," apparently the peanut oil in the UK is not refined. Here in the US it is. What that means is they do something with distillation or neutralization, I don't even know, but the reason they do it is to give it a better shelf life and a more uniform taste. This has been the greasiest "Food Wars" I've ever done. So they are very generous with the peanut oil on the fries and pretty much everything else. Harry: There are a few things to watch out for on the menu at Five Guys. For example, the pickles in the US. In the US, the pickles contain a food coloring called Yellow 5, or tartrazine. If this is added to foods in the European Union, they have to have a warning saying that they might cause hyperactivity in children. Joe: Yes, our pickles have a bunch of junk in it, so does the relish. Specifically, it is made up of: cucumbers, corn syrup, water, high-fructose corn syrup, vinegar, salt, xanthan gum, 0.1% of sodium benzoate as a preservative, calcium chloride, alum, natural flavors, polysorbate 80, Yellow No. 5, and maltol.Harry: In our shortest exclusives section yet, here is everything you can only find on the menu at a UK Five Guys. Joe: And here are all the exclusive Five Guys menu items in the US. Harry: Let's start with the burger. There's only one option in the UK that you won't be able to find in the US, and that is HP Sauce. I won't go into too much detail in case Joe accuses me of Brit-splaining again, but for those who don't know, HP sauce is like a - Joe: The only customization in the US that you can't get in the UK is actually something that everyone in the United States knows exactly what I'm talking about, and that is A1 steak sauce. It looks a lot like the HP brown sauce, but it is not. It doesn't taste anything like it. It is the most popular steak sauce. Ad: A1. It's how steak is done. Joe: I don't know if it even exists outside of the US. Harry: The rest of our exclusive options come as drinks, such as <keyword id="803112" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Milkshakes">milkshakes</keyword>. We have a biscuit shake, which is flavored with Biscoff biscuits, which are those little caramel-flavored cookies which you get on the side of a tea or coffee. Then we have three dessert shake options, which are milkshakes flavored with things which kind of combine to replicate famous desserts. So, here we have a millionaire's shortbread milkshake. Here we have a banoffee pie milkshake. And here we have a strawberry cheesecake milkshake. Joe: Now, for the last thing, the only shake you can get in the US that you can't get in the UK is this, it is the Oreo, listen to me when I say it, let me finish before you start typing, an Oreo Double Stuf milkshake. Yes, you guys have the Oreo shake there, and I think you also have an Oreo cream shake there too, but this is the only Oreo Double Stuf shake. If you don't have Oreo Double Stuf in the UK, they're what they sound like, Oreos with twice as much filling. This is the last thing we're shooting today, and I've been waiting for this all day. Holy s---, this is so good. [producer laughing] Guys, I'm not playing, this might've turned the tides on how I feel about Five Guys. I'm not kidding, this is so good. I'm finishing this. I don't care how sick it makes me, I'm drinking it. Harry: And last but by no means least, in the UK, you can wash your burgers down with... a range of beers. Cheers. Joe: Yeah, well, they don't serve beer at our Five Guys, but I brought my own. Cheers, my man. Ah. It is very warm.Joe: It's a half a hot dog. That's split? It's like, I'm still like, what? I'm, like, I'm shook by that. This is why people on the internet now are like, "I think a hot dog's a sandwich." Well, when you serve it like that, like with the meat cut in half like that, it's like, yeah, it kinda looks, but it's not! It's a hot dog. And you don't cut it down the middle like that. It's ridiculous.
