<ul class="summary-list"><li>Scholastic said it has stopped distributing a book by <keyword id="1638741" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Dav-Pilkey">Dav Pilkey</keyword> for perpetuating "passive <keyword id="44060" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Racism">racism</keyword>."</li><li>"We are deeply sorry for this serious mistake," the children's book publisher said in a statement. </li><li>The pulled book, "The Adventures of Ook and Gluk," hit bookshelves in 2010.</li></ul><p>Scholastic has pulled a children's book, "The Adventures of Ook and Gluk," for perpetuating "passive racism."</p><p>The publisher said in <a href="http://mediaroom.scholastic.com/press-release/scholastic-regarding-adventures-ook-and-gluk">a statement</a> the decision was made on March 22 with the author, Dav Pilkey, who is known for the wildly successful "<keyword id="4601173" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Captain-Underpants">Captain Underpants</keyword>" series. </p><p>In his own statement, Pilkey <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=At1e7buY2Nw">said</a> the book was "intended to showcase diversity, equality, and non-violent conflict resolution." </p><p>The book is about friends who save the world using kung fu and the principles found in Chinese philosophy, he said. </p><p>"But this week it was brought to my attention that this book also contains harmful racial stereotypes and passively racist imagery," the author said. "I wanted to take this opportunity to publicly apologize for this. It was and is wrong and harmful to my Asian readers, friends, and family, and to all Asian people."</p><div type="image" title="The Adventures of Ook and Gluk" height="550" width="370" msid="81734795" hostid="261"></div><p>Scholastic's decision on the book - subtitled "Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future" - followed a similar decision from <keyword id="596040" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Dr-Seuss">Dr. Seuss</keyword> Enterprises, which said earlier this month it would <a href="https://www.insider.com/dr-seuss-books-no-longer-published-racist-imagery-2021-3">cease publication</a> of six Dr. Seuss titles.</p><p>In the days after that announcement, other Dr. Seuss titles <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dr-seuss-books-for-sale-amazon-cancel-culture-canceled-racist-2021-3">soared to the top</a> of Amazon's bestseller chart. The books <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/discontinued-dr-seuss-books-with-racist-imagery-removed-by-ebay-2021-3">were pulled</a> from eBay. Politicians and commentators claimed that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ted-cruz-donald-trump-jrcancel-culture-dr-seuss-week-2021-3">"cancel culture"</a> had come for Dr. Seuss.</p><p>Pilkey said he and Scholastic would work to remove copies of "The Adventures of Ook and Gluk" from bookshops and library shelves, although it's unclear whether <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dr-seuss-week-pulled-six-books-but-stay-on-library-shelves-2021-3">libraries would remove</a> the book.</p><p>As of Sunday, Scholastic's websites in the US and elsewhere had pulled the title. Current orders won't be fulfilled, the company said. </p><p>"Throughout our 100-year history, we have learned that trust must be won every day by total vigilance," Scholastic said in its statement.</p><p>It added: "It is our duty and privilege to publish books with powerful and positive representations of our diverse society, and we will continue to strengthen our review processes as we seek to support all young readers."</p><p>Pilkey said his advance and royalties from the book would be given to charities. He said: "I hope that you, my readers, will forgive me, and learn from my mistake that even unintentional and passive stereotypes and racism are harmful to everyone. I apologize, and I pledge to do better." </p>

<p>The 10-part series, <span>by author Dav Pilkey,</span> follows two prank-loving young boys who create a superhero called Captain Underpants.</p>
<p>Parents say in complaints filed to the Office for Intellectual Freedom that the illustrated <keyword id="5050" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="books">books</keyword> contain "offensive language" that is unsuited to the series' target age group of elementary-school children.</p>
<p>The first book in the series even comes with a "Sturgeon General's Warning" that says: "Some material in this book may be considered offensive by people who don't wear underwear."</p>
<p>So where's the evidence that the books are actually a bad influence on children?</p>
<p>We've broken down the most "offensive" parts of the first "Captain Underpants" book in an attempt to understand why the series is the most <keyword id="43927" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="banned">banned</keyword> in the country.</p>
<h3>"Offensive Language"</h3>
<p>In Chapter 4, the two protagonists of the series - George Beard and Harold Hutchins - refer to their school principal as "that old guy" and call him "Mean Old Mr. Krupp."</p>
<p>Throughout the book, there is reference to undergarments.</p>
<h3>Partial Nudity</h3>
<p>The hero of the series, Captain Underpants, flies around in underwear and a cape throughout the illustrated book.</p>
<p>In Chapter 17, Captain Underpants slings his underwear at the evil Dr. Diaper in an attempt to defeat him and then covers himself with a barrel. (Note: there is no actual nudity in the book, unless you count Captain Underpants' chest.)</p>
<h3>Violence</h3>
<p>In Chapter 16 - titled "The Extremely Graphic Violence Chapter" - George and Harold save each other from evil robots by whacking (and presumably killing) them with what appear to be wooden planks.</p>
<p>The chapter comes with the following disclaimer: "WARNING: The following chapter contains graphic scenes showing two boys beating the tar out of a couple of robots. If you have high blood pressure, or if you faint at the sight of motor oil, we strongly urge you to take better care of yourself and stop being such a baby."</p>
<h3>Misbehavior</h3>
<p>The book is riddled with examples of George and Harold misbehaving. They play several pranks at school, including sprinkling pepper in the cheerleaders' pom-poms and putting bubble bath in the marching band's instruments.</p>
<h3>Blackmail/Threats</h3>
<p>The principal, who is later hypnotized by George and Harold into becoming Captain Underpants, blackmails the two mischievous students into behaving well at school and doing chores for him by threatening to release a tape of them pranking the football team.</p>
<p>This could be construed as bullying.</p>

<p>But what's even more shocking to us than the contents of the Captain Underpants series is why parents are so opposed to a book that <a href="http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/family/2012/09/dav_pilkey_s_captain_underpants_books_why_kids_love_them_and_parents_should_make_peace_with_them_.html">gets young boys excited about reading</a>.</p>

O'Brady <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-colin-obrady-ate-on-solo-trek-across-antarctica-2018-12">relied on special "Colin Bars"</a> designed for him.</li></ul><p>After 56 days of travel, British Army captain Louis Rudd has become the second person ever to cross Antarctica alone and unaided.</p><p>Rudd reached the Ross Ice Shelf on Friday, finishing the treacherous crossing just <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/colin-obrady-first-to-cross-antarctica-alone-unaided-2018-12">two days after American Colin O'Brady</a> achieved the same feat.&#xa0;</p><p>Both explorers set out in early November, though <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/dec/29/louis-rudd-antarctic-explorer-describes-trek">Rudd told The Observer</a> that he did not think of the trek as a competition. In fact, Rudd said he was unaware of O'Brady's plan to cross the southern continent until a few days before Rudd left the United Kingdom.&#xa0;</p><p>The 49-year-old British adventurer skied more than 900 miles in honor of explorer Henry Worsley, a close friend who died while trying to complete the same journey in 2016. <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/retracing-the-antarctic-journey-of-henry-worsley">In an interview with The New Yorker</a>, Rudd said Worsley introduced him to polar exploration, teaching him how to move through blinding whiteouts and spot crevasses in the ice.</p><p>Both O'Brady and Rudd kept their load light, since neither man got resupplied. That means they had to pull all their food, fuel, and gear behind them on a sled. Each explorer brought only one pair of underwear, but their provisions still weighed a significant amount. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-colin-obrady-ate-on-solo-trek-across-antarctica-2018-12">O'Brady said he carried about 400 pounds</a>, more than 50% of which was food.&#xa0;</p><p>Rudd told The Observer that in the mornings, he ate porridge with hot chocolate. For dinner, he consumed freeze-dried meals and protein shakes. Before setting off, he said, he also bought 70 bags of tropical trail mix. Rudd snacked on milk chocolate bars, salami, and cheese as well.</p><p>O'Brady's diet throughout the trek was more tailored - the American worked with a sponsor to design special high-calorie "Colin Bars" based on his nutrition needs.</p><p>Both men said they lost significant amounts of weight as they battled their way across the ice. Rudd estimated that he lost about 33 pounds over the last two months - roughly one-fifth of his weight.</p><p>"I've got chicken legs, my arms are stick thin," he told The Observer. "I had to sew a tuck into the waistband of my underpants and thermal leggings after I felt them slipping down when I was skiing."</p><h2>'This is horrific'</h2><p>In January 2016, Worsley decided to abandon his journey just 30 miles from the finish line. Every person who had tried before them either gave up or died.</p><p>The trek was both the longest distance either man had ever traveled in Antarctica and the longest time spent alone. About 15 or 20 people cheered him on at the base, though Rudd told The Observer that completing the trek alone and unaided meant he was prohibited from going inside or accepting any supplies.</p><p>When the British adventurer completed his journey on Friday, O'Brady was waiting for him. In an Instagram post, the American congratulated Rudd and said the two men now had a "lifelong bond."&#xa0;</p><p><span>"This has been one of the most profound and meaningful experiences of my entire life, and without a doubt my proudest accomplishment," <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BsCcCSmFD6K/">O'Brady wrote on Instagram</a>. "This journey has cracked me open to my core and nearly broken me many times."</span></p><p><span>The men didn't get to return to the comforts of civilization as quickly as they'd hoped, though. On December 29, O'Brady said in an Instagram post that poor weather had prevented pilots from reaching the ice shelf, so the two explorers were still camping out in Antarctica, waiting for a plane.</span></p><p><span>The forecast initially predicted that the men would not be able to leave until Monday, December 31; O'Brady said he was concerned about running out of food while they waited, since the two men only had enough for 48 more hours.</span></p><p><span>But a plane managed to pick them up yesterday, and they flew to Union Glacier, Antarctica's main hub for expeditions and research. I talked to him about the possibility of alien life, why he believed God didn't like to get involved in things, and how he planned to kiss his first girlfriend one Friday afternoon when they got off the bus. (Spoiler: He didn't get kissed.)</p><div type="image" title="The author's sons Noah and Adam" height="768" width="1024" msid="106967087" hostid="261" sizebytes="39508"></div><p>When he was 11, his younger brother Noah — my Gen Z'er — came along. I worried about the age difference, but Adam was patient and kind — that is, until Noah started talking. With the boundless adoration and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sibling-relationships-can-be-complicated-and-change-through-the-years-2023-7"><u>hero worship of a younger sibling</u></a>, Noah wanted to spend all his time hanging around an increasingly surly tween. Locked bedroom doors, and the refrain of "Leave me alone!" often followed by a storm of tiny tears, became the standard.</p><p>But even as my new husband and I spent our days grinding out a living, I worked every evening to bury the exhaustion that came with each question my kids asked, always looking for ways to build bridges between them.</p><p>I watched new cartoons and read new books with Noah, discovering his interests and small joys. I showed them to Adam and asked his opinion. What did he think of "Kim Possible" or "Captain Underpants"? Had he seen the "Spy Kids" movie? Maybe he'd like to come with us to the aquarium or the Museum of Science and Industry? Little by little, I sparked his curiosity about this new creature in our home, and before long, Adam wanted to share his favorite songs and old shows with Noah, who delighted in his brother's attention.</p><div type="image" title="The author with her sons Noah and Adam." height="768" width="1024" msid="106967090" hostid="261" sizebytes="72278"></div><p>When Adam passed away a few years later from a car accident, Noah and I were devastated, but even in this tragic loss, we stayed curious. One day, when he was only six years old, Noah told me that he wished he had a dandelion because then he could blow on it and wish his brother back alive. So we went out and found all the dandelions we could and made wish after wish.</p><h2>My Gen Z son is a good big brother to his Gen Alpha sister</h2><p>Two years later, I had a daughter, Charlotte — a member of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-generation-alpha-how-shop-spend-education-work-live-2024-1"><u>Gen Alpha</u></a> — and like his brother before him, Noah was smitten with his new sister… until she started talking. Again, there were locked doors and shouts of "You're so annoying!" Again, there were hurt toddler feelings. And while I remained determined to bridge the gap between generations — this time, as a Gen X parent raising kids from Generations Z and Alpha — Noah went through puberty like a train through a wall. He was irritable and short-tempered, snapping at the slightest provocation.</p><p>When he wanted to talk, however, I was ready to listen. Through Vines, YouTube, and TikTok, he introduced me to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-perplexes-colleagues-new-slang-here-ones-to-know-2022-12"><u>Gen Z's language</u></a>, using memes, songs, and videos to communicate. I sent back cat videos and memes. He made it clear I wasn't "doing it right," but he indulged me.</p><p>Charlotte is 11 now, and I'm still working on building bridges. There have been new shows to watch and new books to read. The three of us have new adventures together. We go on walks and see who can find the coolest hiking stick. When we go to the thrift store, we race to see who can find the strangest item. And we take day trips to see things like the largest fire hydrant in the state. Dinner is always eaten at the table where <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/screen-free-family-meals-kids-entertainment-2024-1"><u>phones are not allowed</u></a>, and where conversations about all things, weird and mundane, are encouraged.</p><div type="image" title="The author's kids, Noah and Charlotte." height="886" width="886" msid="106967093" hostid="261" sizebytes="50020"></div><p>Noah, perhaps remembering his own experience as the little sibling, has become an amazing big brother. He cheers his sister on, high-fiving her for being elected to student council or praising her solo in the school musical. She asks his advice about anime and video games. They share bad jokes and find joy in their hatred of vegetables. They both get to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/no-screen-time-road-trips-rule-kids-audiobooks-2024-1"><u>DJ in the car.</u></a></p><p>I remain curious about my children, and I continue to answer any question they ask with as much honesty as I can. I watch as they lean into their own curiosity — about each other and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/international-travel-with-young-kids-memories-2024-1">the world around them</a> — and I can only hope that they carry it forward because I don't think we would have been able to bridge the spaces between us without it.</p>

Everything coming to — and leaving — Netflix in July

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="5050" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="books">Books</keyword> about racism were challenged more in 2020 than previous years, the ALA told Insider.</li><li>The organization released its list of the 10 most challenged and <keyword id="908831" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Banned-Books">banned books</keyword>.</li><li>It included a children's book about a police shooting, which caused controversy in Minneapolis. </li></ul><p>More Americans were challenging and seeking to ban books about racism and antiracism in 2020 than previous years, according to the <keyword id="466219" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="American-Library-Association">American Library Association</keyword> (ALA). </p><p>The group's 2020 Top 10 Most Challenged Books list, released this week, mirrored a growing conversation about race and racial equity in the US, Deborah Caldwell-Stone, director of the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom, told Insider.</p><p>"This year - and I think it reflects what our nation's growing concern with racial injustice and the incidents of police violence against black persons - we've seen an increase in challenges to antiracist books and books that criticized police violence," she said. </p><p>Books for children and young adults made the 2020 ALA list, including "Something Happened in Our Town: A Child's Story About Racial Injustice," written by Marianne Celano, Marietta Collins, and Ann Hazzard, and illustrated by Jennifer Zivoin.</p><p>That <a href="https://www.apa.org/pubs/magination/441B228">book</a>, which was a New York Times bestseller, detailed conversations between kids and their families after a fictional police-involved shooting of a Black man. </p><p>"Something Happened" attracted attention in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the months before the trial of former police officer <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chauvin-trial-stress-black-americans-how-leaders-allies-can-help-2021-4">Derek Chauvin</a> over the killing of George Floyd.</p><p>The book had been recommended by the state's Dept. of Health and the Dept. of Education. But the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association - which Chauvin would later turn to for defense funds, according to <a href="https://www.motherjones.com/crime-justice/2021/03/police-unions-have-enormous-war-chests-to-defend-officers-like-derek-chauvin/">Mother Jones</a> - sent <a href="https://www.mppoa.com/images/MPPOA_letter_to_governor_about_elementary_book.pdf">a letter</a> to the governor in October asking for the book to be banned.</p><p>"This book encourages children to fear police officers as unfair, violent, and racist," Brian Peters, executive director, wrote in his letter.</p><p>The list included other titles that dealt directly and indirectly with race in America, including "Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You," by Ibram X. Kendi and Jason Reynolds.</p><p>In <a href="https://twitter.com/DrIbram/status/1379447424310198273?s=20">a statement</a>, Kendi said: "The heartbeat of racism is denial, and the history of 'Stamped' will not be denied, nor will young people's access to this book be cancelled." </p><p>The 2020 list also included older books that were challenged for their use of racial slurs, like <keyword id="161545" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Harper-Lee">Harper Lee</keyword>'s "To Kill a Mockingbird" and John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men."</p><p>The ALA logged a total of 273 books that were affected by censorship attempts last year. The most banned or challenged book in the US was again <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/banned-books-schools-libraries-2019-4">"George,"</a> by Alex Gino, marking its third year at the top of the list.</p><p>The list was released as publishers begin to publicly reckon with racist or otherwise offensive content in their backlogs.</p><p>Earlier this year, Dr. Seuss Enterprises made <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">news</keyword> by announcing it would stop selling <a href="https://www.insider.com/dr-seuss-books-no-longer-published-racist-imagery-2021-3">six of the children's book author's titles</a> for racist and offensive imagery. The removal of those books sparked the opposite reaction, with many conservatives <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ted-cruz-donald-trump-jrcancel-culture-dr-seuss-week-2021-3">calling to keep them on shelves</a> rather than ban them. And Scholastic last month <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/scholastic-adventures-of-ook-and-gluk-dav-pilkey-passive-racism-2021-3">pulled a book</a> by "Captain Underpants" author Dav Pilkey for "passive racism."</p><p>The debate over "Something Happened" was ongoing in Minnesota. "The reality is, those things are out there and they're part of our lived reality," said Jason Isaacson, a state senator and teacher, in February, according to <a href="https://minnesotareformer.com/briefs/legislators-question-schools-use-of-picture-book-about-police-shootings/">The Minnesota Reformer</a>. </p><p>The ALA collects its data for banned or challenged books from news reports and submissions from around the country. Many of them come from librarians. Reports for 2021 have already begun rolling in, she said, although it's too early to tell if the 2020 trends will continue this year, Caldwell-Stone said.</p><p>"I know that last week our program officer, who handles challenges, reports and provides support to librarians and educators giving them challenges, got 10 reports in one week," she said.</p><p>Controversy about "Something Happened" was ongoing elsewhere, too. On Thursday,<a href="https://www.wowt.com/2021/04/09/papillion-la-vista-school-district-apologizes-after-offensive-book-controversy/"> WOWT 6 News</a> in Omaha, Nebraska, reported that the local school district apologized after a teacher showed "Something Happened In Our Town" to elementary school students. </p><p>"It's not a book that is representative of how we view our law enforcement," Annette Eyman, the school district's comms director, told the TV station.</p>

I hoped I wasn't saying goodbye to an old friend," he said, according the The Scottish Sun.</p><p>"I got a jab first and then, careful not to look at what he was doing, I could tell he wasn't feeling too comfortable about it either.</p><p>"Doc Massey must have wished that he could have stayed at home treating the Academy kids' cuts and bruises. I didn't talk much, though. I wanted him fully concentrated.</p><p>"He did a good job. I felt no pain as he put in the stitches – four as he had predicted – and I walked back into the dressing room."</p><p>Liverpool won the match 2-0, but unsurprisingly, the victory wasn't the main topic of conversation in the dressing after, as Gerrard revealed in his autobiography. </p><p>"All the lads were falling about laughing," he said. "We had won, the atmosphere was good and they thought it was hilarious. I got zero sympathy from any of the lads.</p><p>"You can imagine how many jokes about inches and stitches, penis size and my future performances at home with Alex. The studio projects a $95 million opening weekend, but others in the industry think it can surpass the $100 million mark domestically. </p><p>With the movie playing on over 4,000 screens, it definitely seems Warner Bros. is going for the gold.</p><p>Anticipation for the first female-focused superhero movie to hit the multiplex in years (and we're still trying to forget past efforts like "Elektra" and "Catwoman") may be enough for the movie, starring Gal Gadot as the iconic DC Comics superhero, to soar past projections.</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/592ed604b74af46e008b55ff-617/patty jenkins ww warner bros final.jpg" alt="Patty Jenkins WW Warner Bros final" /><p class="source"><span>Warner Bros.</span></p><p class="caption">(L-R) "Wonder Woman" director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot.</p>And the movie is coming out at the perfect time as its only competition this weekend is fellow new release "Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie," which is catering to the kids audience, alongside holdovers like "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" and "Baywatch," which didn't impress anyone when they opened to low numbers over <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/box-office-memorial-day-weekend-numbers-low-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Memorial Day weekend</a>.<p>In that landscape, "Wonder Woman" director Patty Jenkins could take over the title of biggest all-time three-day domestic opening for a female director if she can pass Sam Taylor-Johnson's <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=fiftyshadesofgrey.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">$85.1 million opening</a> for 2015's "Fifty Shades of Grey."</p><p>But looking even bigger, if "Wonder Woman" can go past $116.6 million, it would become the biggest opening ever for a superhero movie in June, passing 2013's "Man of Steel." 'Wonder Woman' could soar over $100 million in its opening weekend

The most recent two, "Shrek the Third" and "Shrek Forever After," however, didn't get the same reception - with a rotten score of <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/shrek_3/">40%</a> and <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/shrek_forever_after/">58%</a>, respectively.</p><p>All four "Shrek" films have earned a total <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/search/?q=shrek">$1.6 billion</a> in domestic grosses, adjusted for inflation.</p><p><span><span>In addition to "Shrek," DreamWorks Animation is also home to the "Kung Fu Panda," "Madagascar," and "How to Train Your Dragon" franchises. Illumination Entertainment is responsible for the mega-popular Minions and the "Despicable Me" franchise.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Deadline also reports that Burke said the goal is <span>to create characters that will lead to theme-park attractions and licensed merchandise to take "the low-single digit returns of the movie business and turn it into a different kind of business."</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Comcast purchased DreamWorks Animation for <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2016/04/28/media/comcast-dreamworks-nbcuniversal/">$3.8 billion</a> in April. Clearly, Comcast is already thinking through how to get that big investment to pay off.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>DreamWorks' "The Croods 2" and "How to Train Your Dragon 3" are set to be released in December 2017 and June 2018, respectively. 'Shrek' is getting revived for more movies after Comcast bought DreamWorks

The more pressing issue is how much time people spend in front of a screen - especially our children. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I watched way too much television growing up, got sucked into the rabbit hole of AOL chat rooms, and played Heretic online in high school. And now, as a writer and editor, I stare into a screen all day every day.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When our son was born, my wife and I agreed he would not be exposed to any screens until he was two years old - and even then we were skittish. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The American Academy of Pediatrics </span><a href="https://www.aap.org/en-us/about-the-aap/aap-press-room/Pages/American-Academy-of-Pediatrics-Announces-New-Recommendations-for-Childrens-Media-Use.aspx"><span style="font-weight: 400;">suggests</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> limiting screen time to </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">one hour per day of high-quality programming from ages two through five. Kids ages six and older should have "consistent limits" on time spent with screens, set by parents. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When our son was approaching age 3, we </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">gradually introduced clips from age-appropriate quality television programming: "Curious George" (which is designed to </span><a href="http://www.pbs.org/parents/curiousgeorge/program/ed_phil.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">help kids learn</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">) and "Thomas &amp; Friends." He watched these on my laptop. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As my son grew older, watching these clips became part of his bedtime routine. Soon, the clips turned into episodes. We would watch an episode of "Curious George," which is two 12-minute episodes in one, with closed captions on. My wife and I would watch with him. To transition him to brushing teeth or reading books, we'd remind him that after the second episode, we'd move on in his routine. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It wasn't until our son turned five that he started watching movies at home. First up, "Ghostbusters" (the original!). Now, we find ourselves watching one movie every weekend: "Captain Underpants," the "Lego" movies, and "Night at the Museum," to name a few. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At his sixth-year checkup this year, I asked our pediatrician about watching television and movies. As a "Star Wars" fan himself, he couldn't say no to our letting him watch it.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">He said that healthy viewing habits come down to two questions: </span></p><ol><li><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Is the program age-appropriate / do you feel comfortable with him watching it? </span></li><li><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Are you watching it with him? </span></li></ol><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The latter, co-watching, is helpful because you know what they're viewing and can turn it into a way for your child to learn. (We started playing a series of "Star Wars" trivia games, for example.)</span></p><h2><strong>Moderating tech use in a sea of screens</strong></h2><p>As a parent, I watch my own screen time as much as I do my son's.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When I'm at the playground, I actually play with my child, or if I'm speaking with another parent, I have my eyes locked on his location. As I scan the playground for my son, I often see other parents sitting on benches with their heads down, staring at their phones. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Schools are a sea of screens, as well. Every classroom at my son's public school has a smartboard, and they're often used to watch videos. What happened to teachers teaching? My wife and I have already committed to sending him to a different school, still in our neighborhood, where not one smartboard exists and children get to interact more freely with one another.  </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Additionally, Cleveland Clinic recently </span><a href="https://newsroom.clevelandclinic.org/2018/03/02/can-small-screens-affect-a-childs-developing-eyes/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">reported</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> that a </span><a href="https://www.commonsensemedia.org/research/the-common-sense-census-media-use-by-kids-age-zero-to-eight-2017"><span style="font-weight: 400;">study</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> found up to 42% of children have access to tablets, which may be contributing to eye strain and nearsightedness in children. "Nearsightedness progression is far more detrimental to children at a young age because this is when they're developing their eyes and their eyes are still growing, especially kids in their teens and preteen years," Dr. Mariana Eisenberg, of Cleveland Clinic, said. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As parents, we have to understand how detrimental too much screen time can be. American adults are already </span><a href="https://www.cnn.com/2016/06/30/health/americans-screen-time-nielsen/index.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">consuming over 10 hours worth of media a day</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, CNN reported. It's common to see parents use iPads and other devices to keep their children occupied during dinner at a restaurant. Why can't parents draw with them, read them a book, play I-Spy, or let the kids play with cars?</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are times, like traveling, when you need to cut yourself and your child some slack and simply give in to temptation. However, as with anything you want your child to do, it's all about modeling the behavior. I'm raising my son with very limited technology - here's how I do it

<p class="p1">The studio announced Thursday afternoon it <a href="http://ir.dreamworksanimation.com/investor-relations/press-releases/press-release-details/2015/DreamWorks-Animation-Implements-New-Strategic-Plan-To-Restructure-Feature-Film-Business/default.aspx">will cut around 500 jobs and will reduce the amount of animated pictures it puts out for year</a>. </p>
<p class="p1">According to the release, DWA will cut the number of films it makes from three to two per year.</p>
<p class="p1">The new strategy will involve releasing one original film per year along with a sequel to one of the studio's better known pictures. </p>
<p class="p1">The announcement comes after a string of box-office bombs and writedowns from the studio in the past few years including 2012's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dreamworks-animation-will-lay-off-350-employees-2013-2#!GvObe">"Rise of the Guardians"</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dreamworks-animation-will-lose-57-million-on-mr-peabody-and-sherman-2014-4">this year's "Mr. Peabody &amp; Sherman."</a></p>
<p class="p1">Earlier this month, DreamWorks Animation announced Bonnie Arnold and Mireille Soria <a href="http://ir.dreamworksanimation.com/investor-relations/press-releases/press-release-details/2015/DreamWorks-Animation-Appoints-Veteran-Producers-Bonnie-Arnold-And-Mireille-Soria-As-Co-Presidents-Of-Feature-Animation/default.aspx">will now lead the animation department</a> as co-presidents.</p>
<p class="p1">The two were lead producers on the studio's successful "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Madagascar" franchises. </p>
<p class="p1">The company's next film is an original animated feature titled "Home" with the voice talents of Rihanna and Jim Parsons ("The Big Bang Theory"). It will be released in March.</p>

<p><span class="il">DreamWorks</span> Animation (NASDAQ: DWA) is implementing a new strategic plan to restructure its core feature animation business to ensure the consistent and profitable delivery of the high quality films that audiences have come to expect from the studio.  Following a full review of the business, the company will focus its feature production from three films per year down to two, maximize its creative talent and resources, reduce costs, and drive profitability.</p>
<p>Under the leadership of newly appointed Co-Presidents of Feature Animation Bonnie Arnold and Mireille Soria, the studio's core feature animation production will now focus on six specific movies for the next three years - one original film and one sequel each year - including <em>Kung Fu Panda 3 </em>(<span class="aBn" data-term="goog_904017749"><span class="aQJ">March 18, 2016</span></span>), <em>Trolls</em> (<span class="aBn" data-term="goog_904017750"><span class="aQJ">Nov. 4, 2016</span></span>), <em>Boss Baby</em> (<span class="aBn" data-term="goog_904017751"><span class="aQJ">Jan. 13, 2017</span></span>), <em>The Croods 2</em> (<span class="aBn" data-term="goog_904017752"><span class="aQJ">Dec. 22, 2017</span></span>), <em>Larrikins </em>(<span class="aBn" data-term="goog_904017753"><span class="aQJ">Feb. 16, 2018</span></span>) and <em>How to Train Your Dragon 3</em> (<span class="aBn" data-term="goog_904017754"><span class="aQJ">June 29, 2018</span></span>). <em>Captain Underpants,</em> which will be produced outside of the studio's pipeline at a significantly lower cost, is scheduled for release in 2017.  The company's 2015 release, <em>Home</em>, will premiere domestically on <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_904017755"><span class="aQJ">March 27</span></span>.</p>
<p>"The number one priority for <span class="il">DreamWorks</span> Animation's core film business is to deliver consistent creative and financial success," said<span class="il">DreamWorks</span> Animation Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Katzenberg.  "I am confident that this strategic plan will deliver great films, better box office results, and growing profitability across our complementary businesses."</p>
<p>The overall reduction of <span class="il">DreamWorks</span> Animation's feature production output will result in a loss of approximately 500 jobs across all locations and all divisions of the studio. <span class="il">DreamWorks</span> expects to incur a pre-tax charge of approximately $290 million in connection with the restructuring and related items.  These costs are expected to be incurred primarily in the quarter ended December 31, 2014, with the remainder in 2015 and 2016.  The plan will result in total cash payments of approximately $110 million incurred primarily in 2015<strong>.  </strong>The restructuring plan is expected to be substantially complete by the end of 2015 and expected to result in annualized pre-tax cost savings of approximately $30 million in 2015, growing to roughly $60 million by 2017.</p>

DreamWorks Animation Is Cutting 500 Jobs And Will Only Make 2 Movies Per Year Now

Already Disney has some big assets to offer subscribers to this potential service, including movies made by its own studios and the rights to mega-hits like Star Wars. But it's going to need as many big guns as it can get in that fight.&#xa0;<br><br>If the future is less about cable bundles and classic TV <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword>, and more about bringing content directly to paying subscribers, giants like Disney can't stand pat. That's where Fox comes in.</br></br></p><p>As one industry observer put it, "nobody knows what the business model of the future is. But if you have a lot of content, you're either going to get people to pay for it, run ads in it, or license it to somebody. So this is a pretty good hedge for Disney."</p><p>So, here's what we're thinking about in terms of breaking down the potential deal:</p><h2>Building out a super-powered library</h2><p>Disney's content library seems as good as it gets: Mickey, Pixar, Marvel. Given the company's plans to pull back on Netflix distribution to build out its own streaming service, it's arguably in great shape to launch its own streaming subscription business.</p><p>But as consumer media consumption fragments more every year, Disney will need as extensive a menu as possible to make sure they have something for everybody's plate, said Mike Kelly, CEO of Kelly Newman Ventures, a media industry consulting firm.</p><p>"Media has always been a distribution business, but digital is about one-to-one," he said. "So the only way to remain central to consumers is to continue to have scale by owning as much of a library as possible."</p><p>Netflix's approach to this has been to spend heavily to develop new shows, and compete with the likes of HBO and major TV networks for potential hits. With Fox, Disney would grab the rights to a trusted library including&#xa0;&#xa0;X-Men, Deadpool, Planet of the Apes, Avatar, and Captain Underpants, and of course the added capability of finding and nurturing future blockbusters.</p><h2>Defending against FANG</h2><p>Beside fighting Netflix, everyone in media is making sure they don't get taken out by the rest of Silicon Valley - namely Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple. These companies have huge scale, deep pockets and are getting aggressive in content while dominating digital advertising.</p><p>"People talk about Facebook and Google taking 85 cents of every dollar in digital ads, but the way those companies look at it is that they are only taking like 20% of advertising overall," said Kelly. "They want it all."</p><p>Indeed, overall the so-called <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-news-fang-futures-tech-companies-2017-11">FANG companies</a>&#xa0;"are trying to eat [media's] lunch," he said. For big media players, "this is about being around five years from now."</p><h2>What about sports?</h2><p>This is where it gets really interesting. CNBC is now reporting that Fox's regional sports networks will be included if this deal happens.</p><p>That means that while Disney wouldn't control the Fox broadcasting network and its NFL rights, or FS1, Fox's fledgling ESPN wannabe, it could theoretically control local sports networks like Fox Sports Detroit, which broadcasts Detroit Tigers and Detroit Pistons games, or part of the Yes Network in New York, which streams the Yankees and Brooklyn Nets.</p><p>There's a massive amount of money in local sports rights and advertising. And remember, like parent company Disney, ESPN is planning to launch its own direct-to-consumer sports streaming service, which could suddenly become a lot more enticing to fans of certain local teams. Is this why Disney <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/disney-stock-price-big-advantage-movie-service-will-succeed-2017-9-1002319885">purchased the streaming technology firm BAMTech? </a></p><p>In other words, even if companies like Amazon and Facebook continued to dabble in live sports rights, a Fox deal could be a total game changer for Disney.</p><h2>Don't forget FX</h2><p>If a Disney/Fox mashup is about traditional media girding for an 'over the top' future, the FX network could provide to be a great test case. The network has produced a continued slate of prestige shows with small, but passionate fan bases (think "The Americans" and "American Horror Story.") FX has recently begun offering an ad-free version of the network to <a href="http://www.adweek.com/tv-video/for-6-a-month-comcast-subscribers-can-watch-fx-and-fxx-without-ads/">Comcast subscribers for $6 a month.</a></p><p>FX CEO John Landgraf is one of the more respected minds in the TV business, and coined the phrase 'peak TV' describing the current glut of scripted series. He said a <a href="http://newyork.advertisingweek.com/replay/-fox-seminar-2017-09-28-1615">few months ago during an Advertising Week</a> event that a linear TV network may not be "the best expression of our brand." Maybe FX tries to become the next HBO Go?&#xa0;</p><p>Or, as Landgraf noted, maybe FX figures out a way to bring premium TV content to consumers for free - with a limited number of targeted ads. Either way, FX would be a solid addition to the Disney portfolio.</p><h2>The power of Avatar</h2><p><span>Fox is spending over $1 billion on four planned sequels to James Cameron's smash hit "Avatar." Those movies basically have to work. Is anyone better suited to maximizing the marketing and profit potential of a franchise like that (theme parks, merchandise, etc.) than Disney?</span></p><h2>Netflix won't stay still and may want to make more deals</h2><p>Netflix is planning to spend an astonishing $8 billion on content next year. How can they keep this spending up? Its subscription service officer a better business model than cable TV or advertising, argued Ted Sarandos, Netflix's chief content officer, speaking at the UBS event on Tuesday.</p><p>Sarandos also gushed about the company's recent acquisition of the comic book publisher Millarworld, which provides Netflix with exclusive access to a stable of characters that could be turned into TV shows and movies.</p><p>"It's very freeing... owning your IP," said&#xa0;Sarandos. Owning IP can lead to&#xa0;much bigger relationships and partnerships, he said. And Sarandos didn't shoot down the idea when he was asked if Netflix might want to make more such deals.</p><h2>Then there are a bunch of unanswered questions:</h2><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>What happens to Hulu?&#xa0;</strong>According to CNBC, Disney could end up controlling a majority stake in Hulu - which is a joint venture between 21st Century Fox, Disney and Comcast. This could present an odd conflict: would Disney prioritize it's own streaming service over Hulu, even though <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/handmaids-tale-emmy-pushing-hulus-business-2017-7">Hulu</a> already has a built-in subscriber base?</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">What happens to Hulu if Disney/Fox pulls its content? Would Disney sell it to somebody else? Will it outlive its usefulness over time?</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Or, as one observer suggested, <strong>could Hulu be used as the base service to jump-start a Disney subscription offering?</strong></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Who's in charge?&#xa0;</strong>Could a Murdoch best known for a <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-15671615">phone hacking scandal in the UK</a>&#xa0;actually run the company that brought you Moana? Yes, <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/0c78437e-d9e2-11e7-a039-c64b1c09b482">reported the Financial Times on Tuesday.</a> Disney has been seeking a successor for CEO Bob Iger for several years, and Iger has extended his stay past a planned retirement. Is James Murdoch the right man for the job? He <a href="http://deadline.com/2017/12/foxs-james-murdoch-declines-talk-disney-negotiations-1202220424/">declined to talk about the deal at the UBS Media Conference on Tuesday, reported Deadline.</a></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Murdoch has painted himself as a digitally savvy, ready-to-shake-things-up media mogul. Is he just what Disney needs?&#xa0;</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>What about a smaller Fox?&#xa0;</strong>If the deal closes, the Murdochs will suddenly have a pile of cash, and a small collection of assets: Fox network, Fs1 and Fox News. Those networks are all solid, but will suddenly seem very vulnerable as media becomes all about being big. What if Fox suddenly loses the NFL in a few years, for instance?</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Could the Murdochs suddenly become buyers again? &#xa0;Or could the family recombine the Fox assets with News Corp. (Barron's, The Wall Street Journal, etc), as Kelly suggested?</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>There are so many other dominoes to fall.&#xa0;</strong>What happens to Viacom? Discovery/Scripps? What does Facebook do on TV? Amazon?
