The US defence’s highly-confidential military technical data seems to have gone for a toss during a period of 2010-2012, an Economic Times report revealed. <keyword id="1919242" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hannah-Robert">Hannah Robert</keyword>, owner of defence contracting businesses in the US, has pleaded guilty before the US <keyword id="85303" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="District-judge">District Judge</keyword> <keyword id="2354268" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Anne-Thompson">Anne Thompson</keyword> for violating the Arms Export Control Act by exporting the military technical drawings to India without prior approval from the <keyword id="183676" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="US-Department-of-State">US Department of State</keyword>. 
 
According to documents filed in the case, from June 2010 to December 2012, the 49-year-old has conspired to export to India defence technical drawings of parts used in the torpedo systems for nuclear submarines, military attack helicopters and F-15 fighter aircrafts. 
 The ET report revealed that Robert founded One Source <keyword id="6355055" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="USA">USA</keyword> and <keyword id="2791987" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Caldwell-Components">Caldwell Components</keyword> that contracted with the <keyword id="594346" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="US-Department-of-Defence">US Department of Defence</keyword> to supply defence hardware as well as spare parts. 
 
Robert owned and operated a third firm located in India that manufactured defence hardware and spare parts along with an Indian resident, identified in the complaint only as 'PR'. In a serious breach of trust, Robert sent export-controlled technical data to PR in India so that the two could submit bids to foreign actors, including those in the UAE and Pakistan, to supply them or their foreign customers with defence hardware and spare parts, the financial daily stated. 
 
The modus operandi for Robert included transmitting military drawings to India by posting the technical data to the password-protected website of a New Jersey church where she was a volunteer web administrator. 
 She uploaded thousands of technical drawings to <keyword id="820743" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-church">the church</keyword> website for PR to download in India through the course of the scheme. 
 
Taking no risk, the defence department in the US grounded nearly 47 F-15 fighter aircraft for repair and inspection, at a cost estimated to exceed $ 150,000. As part of her plea agreement, Robert will have to pay $ 181,000 to the defence department, including the cost of repair for the grounded F-15s. 
 
Robert also consented to a forfeiture money judgment of about $ 78,000, which represents the dollar value of the fraudulent contracts with the department.

This cuts out the middleman and gives Tesla the power in pricing and customer relationship-building. EV startups like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-vehicle-startups-direct-sales-rivian-lucid-tesla-revenue-2022-11">Lucid and Rivian</a> have already copied this strategy.Other automakers have been taking a look at Tesla's accomplishments and might be wondering if they could model it to some extent. Some of Elon Musk's influence on the industry can already be seen: lean inventory, online configurations, and more transparency — and there's even more on the way.Though survey data suggests <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-electric-vehicle-sales-model-automakers-say-wont-catch-on-2023-8">auto executives</a> aren't so confident that Tesla's way will go mainstream, leaders at Ford and BMW, for example, have hinted at offering customers a more direct purchase option, particularly for EVs."Tesla is, at this point in time, the one EV automaker that seems to be successful on product, profitability, and distribution," Tim Jackson, former president of the Colorado Automobile Dealers Association, said. Dealerships might not go away, but they're certainly going to look different to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-cars-killing-car-dealership-as-we-know-it-2023-1">car shoppers</a> in the future.<h2>Recent dynamics in the dealership world</h2>A lot has happened to auto retail in recent years.The digital transition has forced dealers to give buyers more online options.The pandemic has led dealers to operate more efficiently with less inventory (albeit for more profit).And now the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-shopping-experience-big-advantage-adam-jonas-2023-6">EV shift</a> is driving a wedge between dealers and their automakers. All of this is to say changes have been happening and remain imminent.Automakers are all but demanding their dealers make massive infrastructure investments (or get out of the business entirely) to prepare for EVs, even in areas in which adoption is not expected to tick up for some time.Meanwhile, car companies are saying they might experiment with a different business model altogether — while retailers say they're more important than ever in order to take EVs mainstream."That's going to require a healthy dealer body," Scott Kunes, COO of Kunes Auto and RV Group, said of these trends.<h2>The dealer POV</h2><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucid-texas-lawsuit-ev-market-dealership-sales-store-2022-11">Auto franchise laws</a> are a force to be reckoned with, regardless of any push to offer customers different buying experiences."Even if people want this and it was something that was implemented, some of the questions about the rights of dealers will come into play here," Jessica Caldwell, executive director of insights at Edmunds, told Insider earlier this month. Part of the saving grace for dealers has been just how strong of a contingent they are.Still, "If I was a dealer, I would definitely want some guarantees" about what the future holds with EVs and sales strategies, Caldwell said.One factor potentially working in the favor of at least smaller dealerships is the fact that big ones are buying them up in droves, according to merger and acquisition data from dealer advisory firm Kerrigan Advisors.There may be some dealerships that don't see a return on investment from spending over $1 million for EV infrastructure, but <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/06/03/how-ford-gm-auto-dealers-are-thinking-about-detroits-ev-future.html">not participating in that might risk their business with automakers</a>. If large group retailers snatch up the smaller stores that automakers are hinting could go extinct, those stores remain protected.Shoppers ultimately need places to see new products, receive education on the nuances of buying electric, and get their questions answered, experts say, especially as the EV buying curve shifts from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-electric-car-sales-plateau-early-adopters-competition-2023-8">early adopters</a> to the next wave."There's got to be some sort of middle ground there," Kunes said. And this is Kirk Bennion.Kirk Bennion: Hi, my name is Kirk Bennion. I'm an exterior design manager at <keyword id="55200" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chevrolet">Chevrolet</keyword>, and we're gonna do a design breakdown of the new 2020 C8 Corvette.Aj: He's gonna take us through crucial design elements that helped evolve the C8 into a wildly different car while remaining true to traditional Corvette design. And we're gonna start where every other Corvette starts: the wheels. In fact, the entire design is what Kirk describes as "wheel oriented."Kirk: That means that when you look at the profile of the fenders, we're basically, we're drawing them right over the wheels. It's almost like you've taken the wheels and pushed them up into the body. And this gives us the muscular fenders and the muscular quarter panel.Aj: With most sports <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword>, design elements often help improve the overall performance of the car. This is true with the C8. Its wheel-oriented design allows the car to remain agile at high speeds by keeping the car low to the ground for a low center of gravity. Once the placement of the wheels has been determined, the design team can move on to the stance of the car.Kirk: What's key to the car is what we call rake. Rake is basically designing the side of the vehicle to where it's at an angle. You'll notice that the rear fascia has kind of gotten taller as the years progress. And that's because within our aerodynamic package, the car wants to have a bit of a wedge to it. It wants this high deck lid to alleviate any turbulence or drag back there.Aj: Rake is more of a design tool than a design element. It's used on different design elements to give the C8 that aggressive look and improved performance. The rake of the belt line or the bottom of the windshield is responsible for the raised rear of the Corvette. It makes the car look like it's leaping forward or like a cheetah about to pounce on its prey. As you look at the C8, you'll notice other design elements with some degree of rake, like the waterline. Kirk: The waterline really came off of the 1959 Stingray. And what that does for you is it creates a section of the car. In doing so, it throws the lower half of the car into shadow, and then it gives you the room to work with your sculpture on the top of the car.Aj: The rake of the belt line and waterline are great for looks and performance, but it causes an issue in the rear of the vehicle. It tends to make it look tall and thick, where Corvettes of the past are thin and sleek, or what Kirk refers to as lighter. So the design team decided to trick the eye into making the back look thinner by using a technique found on the C7.Kirk: So, when we got into the back of the car, we created this lower rear fascia that's always black. And that's real important to make the car look lighter.Aj: By unifying all the components at the rear with a uniform color, it draws your attention to the top, making the car look thinner than it actually is. It even draws most of your attention to Corvette's signature double-digit tail lamps.Kirk: Double-digit means that you'll have two on either side. These are more impactful. You know, they're just not a shape, but they're, they have a lot of gesture, a lot of direction to them. So when you're, like, a half a block away or whatever, you know that this is the new 2020 C8, just by the footprint of those tail lamps.Aj: The C8 is all about being distinctive while remaining unmistakably Corvette. The biggest change was the move to a mid-engine layout, where the engine sits behind the driver instead of in front. Kirk: Having the new mid-engine layout, it's really good from a performance standpoint. I would tell you impactfully, though, it's even better for the design. I mean, this is clearly the biggest change we've done within Corvette's architecture. So it gives us an all-new proportion and an all-new vehicle. We've also taken the occupant from where they were in the previous generation and moved them forward 16 1/2 inches. But the mid-engine layout, here again, it gives you the performance attributes, but it gives you a very unique proportion to Corvette.Aj: The new C8 Corvette marks a new direction for the brand. Its mid-engine layout and aggressive detailing help give it the look of an exotic supercar, while its wheel-oriented design, waterline, and double-digit tail lamps help tie it back into its long heritage as America's longest-running sports car. It's guided by the same principles as every generation before it: an affordable sports car that refuses to compromise on performance and driving experience.
