 Who can forget the year-end carnival that has a reputation all over the globe? It’s not just a street. Officially it may have been christened <keyword id="579289" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mother-Teresa-Sarani">Mother Teresa Sarani</keyword>, but it’s a happening place for the elitists of the country. It has seen the vintage 70s and 80s. Who would have known the singer performing live at <keyword id="424155" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trincas">Trincas</keyword> then would end up being the famous <keyword id="7376" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Usha-Uthup">Usha Uthup</keyword> now? Of Cabarets, jazz clubs and pubs, Park Street’s prominence has invited famed Bengali ‘bhodroloks’ (gentlemen). That sometimes ranged from Soumitra Chatterjee, Barun Chanda, <keyword id="14969" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Satyajit-Ray">Satyajit Ray</keyword>, Anjan Dutta to writer Mani Shankar Mukherjee, <keyword id="23798" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="amitav-ghosh">Amitav Ghosh</keyword> and musician <keyword id="932811" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nandan-Bagchi">Nandan Bagchi</keyword>. 
 And then this happened. Independent India’s first nightclub, Mocambo at Park Street doesn’t let a marketing professional enter with her driver, where she thought would be the best place to dine on her final evening in the city. She wasn’t just brazenly denied entry with the driver, but a reason as silly as the driver not wearing the proper outfit (read extravagant clothes) and was seen eating jhal muri, was given to justify its actions. At a time when the Chief Minister of the state has decided to call ‘telebhaja’ (fried snacks) an industry in the State and seeking foreign investments to expand the same, denying someone entry to the posh restaurant on this pretext is abominable for a place whose Chicken Sicillienes was quite a favourite with <keyword id="6360386" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jawaharlal-Nehru">Jawaharlal Nehru</keyword>. 
 
Mind you, the rage is taking place on social media, a place more powerful than all presidents of the world put together. While the management of the place said they have the right to admission reserved, people rightly pointed out that cannot be based on someone’s appearance. We got in touch with <keyword id="2481483" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vikrant-Batra">Vikrant Batra</keyword>, owner of <keyword id="3389204" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cafe-Delhi-Heights">Cafe Delhi Heights</keyword>, a leading chain of restaurants in the capital to understand the right properly. "’Right to admission reserved’ is a very critical term not only for the hospitality industry but also for any public place in general. It is very important to filter your crowd on the basis of the kind of experience you want to give to your customers. It relates to both safety as well as the concept behind your restaurant. Having said that it should not be exercised to discriminate people on the basis of their caste, colour, creed or their economic strata,” <keyword id="233052" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Batra">Batra</keyword> told <keyword id="824043" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Business-Insider">Business Insider</keyword>. 
 
Same view was expressed by the spokesperson of Radisson Blue MBD,Noida, who said, “Speaking from a purely legal viewpoint any hotel has a right to restrict admission to anyone as long as this is not a discriminatory action i.e. due to race, caste , religion.” 
 
Definitely, for a place like Mocambo that boasts of a dance floor reinforced with Belgian glass, and having flown down an Italian chef to design its menu with a German architect designing the interior, we could have expected some Indian hospitality to add to the feel. 
 And even if the admission stays reserved, “One cannot rule out the thumb rule of our industry - Customer is the king.  It was a typical case of an owner’s pride and neighbour’s envy when a usual Wednesday night turned into one of the most happening ones as <keyword id="34647" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Coldplay">Coldplay</keyword>’s Chris Martin walked into the bar and played songs- Viva la vida, and Paradise. 
 
Lucky ones termed it as a moment of a lifetime and clicked pictures with the international star, who was at the café with All India Bakchod’s Tanmay Bhat, actress Freida Pinto, singers Vishal Dadlani, Raghu Dixit and men from comedy collective.

Rishi Kumar, General Manager at Rodeo, said that they are always ready with basic requirements like sound set-up and security. “In case of any celebrity playing, we need to be extra cautious due to huge popularity. Even though CyberHub has a huge F&amp;B zone spanning 200,000 sq ft of space, industry experts feel that it's the geographic benefit of Worldmark that would work in its favour. However, it would not be eating up Cyberhub's business since there is enough scope for both to survive.

<ul><li>Indian Hotels, the operator of Taj Hotels, launched its food delivery platform Qmin at the peak of the pandemic.</li><li>Born out of adversity, this start-up has been profitable since day one in the industry dominated by <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword> and <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword>.</li><li>Jehangir Press, associate VP, strategic accounts management group and commercial director, Qmin at IHCL speaks to Business Insider India about Taj’s value chain, growth story, journey so far and revenue goals for FY23.</li></ul>Indian Hotels, the operator of Taj Hotels, launched its food delivery platform Qmin two years ago. At the height of the pandemic, instead of outsourcing the Taj Hotel Group’s delivery services to existing platforms, the Tata Group launched its own in-house platform in Qmin. In the last two years, Qmin has generated revenues to the tune of ₹100 crore. This year alone, it hopes to clock in revenues to the tune of ₹80 crore. “We are possibly the only food delivery platform that has been profitable from day one because we have found the right balance of using our existing resources,” Jehangir Press, associate VP, strategic accounts management group and commercial director, Qmin at IHCL, told Business Insider India. The 90-minute delivery service Zomato and its rival Swiggy together hold <a href="https://theprint.in/theprint-essential/are-zomato-swiggy-helping-restaurant-business-or-hurting-it-why-cci-has-ordered-a-probe/905581/">90-95%</a> market share in India’s food delivery business, but also burning cash. In the quarter ending March 2022, Zomato posted a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/zomato-posted-a-1222-crore-loss-but-its-stock-gained-18-reasons-behind-the-surge/articleshow/91766080.cms">net loss</a> of ₹1,222 crore, which widened by ₹400 crore since last year. With Qmin, the Tata Group could move away from having to depend on the likes of Zomato or Swiggy for deliveries. Qmin also gave the group complete control over the entire value chain from food preparation to delivery. “We have 100% control – over the value chain and with that, you are in control of the safety, hygiene, and health of everything that you're sending out. Also, we obviously cannot compromise on hygiene and safety. We took a call and even though it costs us substantially more, we went with the complete ecosystem,” said Press. Unlike its competitors that have been focusing on chopping their delivery time from 30 minutes to 10 minutes, Qmin says it has prioritized safety, security, hygiene, sustainability and delivering a luxurious experience. Qmin takes up to 90 minutes to deliver its orders. Our truck business will also grow, (but) not at the same pace. The shops are where we see the major growth,” said Press. Qmin is also looking at expanding its presence across borders, starting with the UK, US and UAE markets. While delivery and retail shops contribute almost equally to Qmin’s overall sales, Press is confident that retail shops will contribute a lion’s share of the revenue in the near future.

If you don’t like the continental and want to indulge in chicken biryani and lamb rezala, you aren’t spared either. Government’s much awaited <keyword id="6354679" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="GST">GST</keyword> (Goods and Services Tax) has brought the axe down on the business of hospitality. Both for the restaurateurs and customers, the recently declared GST rate, which would be effective from July, has resulted in devastation. Moreover, the <keyword id="6404781" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alcohol-ban">alcohol ban</keyword> on the highways has taken a toll on many renowned hospitality destinations and has crippled them to the core. The ludicrously high GST i.e. 18% for hotels charging Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000 a room night and 28 % for those pegged at tariff rate of Rs 5,000-plus level and the same taxes for the <keyword id="34615" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="restaurants">restaurants</keyword> would hinder the business like never before. Stand alone restaurants aren’t spared either. Those with air-conditions and liquor license will be charged 18% and non AC ones 12%. For the ones with less than annual turnover of Rs 5 lakh, guests will be charged 5% from July 1. Compare this to the global statistics – GST charged for hotels in Malaysia is 6%, Thailand and Singapore stand at 7% and Japan 8%. The only country that goes double digit with its GST among the competition is China at 11%. Dr. Ankur Bhatia, Executive Director, Bird Group, which runs Roseate House in Delhi Aerocity, in an <keyword id="6370284" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Exclusive">exclusive</keyword> interview with Business Insider said, he has lost Rs 2 crore of business in last two months of alcohol ban. Losing Rs 2 crore isn’t a nominal amount and makes us ponder how the government could have actually done it better. Hotels = Jobs At a time, when the opposition parties have raised fingers at the Modi government for the inability to provide jobs to the youth, it is to be reminded, the hospitality sector provides direct employment to 5.8 million people. And when the alcohol was banned along the highways in the restaurants and hotels, nearly 1 million jobs were curbed. Hospitality industry = skyrocketing economy Besides being an essential job creator in the country, hospitality industry has a market worth of Rs 3,09,110 crore, just below Retail and Insurance. Renowned food journalist, Sourish Bhattacharya, on his portal, fears that this high GST would deter local dhaba owners and small food joints to upgrade their businesses fearing too much taxation. At the end of the day, hospitality business is one the verge of becoming service class of the society who takes the burden of all kinds of taxations without much rebate. Why is high rate of GST horrifying? “High GST is going to seriously hurt the hospitality business because international tourists will prefer Southeast Asian destinations because of the increase in tax from the current level. India as a destination will further face challenges from inbound tourists from its neighbouring ASEAN countries. When it comes to the competition with our Asian counterparts such as Japan and Singapore where the tax is much lesser, there will be a dropdown in inbound business which will affect the economy of the country,” feels V. Jaiswal, Senior VP – Sales &amp; Marketing, Sarovar Hotels &amp; Resorts. What goes in the disadvantage of the customers is most eateries will charge 12% even if they are small just to save themselves from taxmen’s red eyes. “We continue to lose to our competitors in the international market due to these activities. Unfortunately the situation does not get any better. In any case we have infrastructural issues in the country and as you know India is a far off destination and so on and so forth. What motives are ailing the industry? Alcohol ban impact “Liquor sale alone accounts for 20-30% share of the total food and beverage revenue. It also impacts the revenue from the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) segment, and the room demand segment and will lead to several job losses,” added Jaiswal. When will the government understand? If alcohol ban along the highways and high GST weren’t enough, there is a high level of red tapes that tends to derail the industry anytime. “The red tape bureaucrats today make things difficult by adding onto the business cost, logistics and all other functions of a business get affected. The procedure of getting a license is too long. There are too many departments to get one license cleared thus making it time consuming and delay from the department. This leaves little room for restaurant owners to focus on actually running the restaurant,” Vikrant Batra, Owner, Cafe Delhi heights told Business Insider. Also India’s millennial city Gurugram and the state that houses it has had its fair share of bad day last quarter when the state government without any thought decided to sell liquor through one distributor across the state. In this case, Neeraj Sachdeva’s Lakeforest Wines is a clear winner having paid Rs 62.5 crore bid amount. Since then, if local restaurateurs are to be believed, the liquor prices have gone up by 59% and given rise to grey market economy. Where lies the solution? While Bhatia is positive about various business bodies taking legal steps to make the alcohol ban verdict null, Batra believes,a a single window for the entire licensing process, preferably over the internet handled by the government facilitation agencies would make things easier.
