Assam's COVID-19 cases crossed the 1,200-mark on Saturday with 159 people, including 20 air travellers, across districts testing positive for the disease, state Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. With these cases, the total number of COVID-19 patients has gone up to 1,216 in the state from 1,057 on Friday. OF the total cases, 1,046 are active, Sarma said in a tweet. Earlier during the day, Sarma said samples of 128 persons from across the districts tested positive. Kokrajhar and Chirang reported 26 cases, 20 in Hailakandi, 13 each in Kamrup and Dibrugarh, nine in Jorhat, seven in Golaghat, five in Dhubri, three in Barpeta, two in Cachar and one in Bongaigaon, he said. The minister said 29 people have tested positive for coronavirus but the districts to which they belong are yet to be ascertained. In a separate tweet, he said 38 patients have recovered from the disease and discharged from hospitals after their samples tested negative twice. Assam COVID-19 tally crosses  1,200-mark with 159 new cases

According to the state government data, out of a total of 20,613 Hindus declared as illegal immigrants by the Foreigners' Tribunals, 8,139 are from Cachar district, 2884 from Guwahati city, 1574 from Lakhimpur district, 1038 from Dibrugarh district. On the other hand, out of 27309 Muslims declared as illegal immigrants by the Foreigners' Tribunals, 4182 are from Jorhat district, 3,897 from Guwahati city, 2,829 from Dibrugarh district, 2,100 from Hojai district, 2,096 from Sivasagar district, 2,083 from Nagaon district, 2,013 from Cachar district, 1,710 from Lakhimpur district, 1,172 from Morigaon district. According to the Assam Accord, the midnight of 24 March 1971 is the cut-off date for the detection and deportation of illegal migrants. Citing the 2011 census, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "The Assamese-speaking people accounted for 48.38 per cent of the state's total population of 3.12 crore and the Bengali-speaking people accounted for 28.92 per cent of the total population." On Baruah's question, if the state government was aware of the fact that the number of people speaking non-Assamese languages is rising and creating a threat to the <keyword id="20360813" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indigenous-communities" source="keywords">indigenous communities</keyword>, Sarma said the dispensation is monitoring the situation.

47,928 illegal immigrants detected in state: Assam government

Silchar (<keyword id="19911206" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Assam" source="keywords">Assam</keyword>): At least three suspected <keyword id="19909887" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="militants" source="keywords">militants</keyword> were killed and several police personnel were injured in a fierce <keyword id="19935589" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="encounter" source="keywords">encounter</keyword> in Cachar district of Assam on Wednesday, officials said. Though police have not made any official comment yet, a senior official at <keyword id="45253" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Assam-Police" source="Orion">Assam Police</keyword> Headquarters in Guwahati confirmed to PTI that three militants were neutralised in the encounter. "Some of our personnel also sustained injuries. But we cannot immediately say the nature of injuries. We are yet to receive a report from the Cachar district police," he said. According to sources, police arrested three militants, whose affiliations are yet to be made public, from East Dholai Ganganagar on Tuesday night. "Police seized one AK-47 rifle, one pistol and other arms from the autorickshaw in which they were travelling. A police team took the trio to Bhaban Hills area today morning in search of other rebels. At that time, the encounter happened," they added. According to a source, three militants were killed in the gunfight, which lasted more than an hour, while three policemen also sustained bullet injuries. "All the injured have been admitted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment," he added. Cachar Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta and other senior officials rushed to the spot.

Assam's flood situation remained grim on Monday with a population of nearly 23 lakh affected in <keyword id="22326450" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="28-districts" source="keywords">28 districts</keyword> as the water level of most rivers continue to flow above the danger mark, according to an official bulletin. The death toll in this year's flood, landslide and storm was 78 with 66 succumbing in the deluge alone. The Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger mark at Nimatighat, Tezpur and Dhubri. Other rivers that have breached the red mark are Burhi Dihing in Khowang, Dikhou in Sivasagar, Disang in Nanglamuraghat, Dhansiri in Numaligarh, Kopili in Dharamtul, Beki in Barpeta, Sankosh in Golakganj, Barak in BP Ghat and Kushiyara in Karimganj. Multiple agencies, including NDRF, SDRF and local administration, have been carrying out relief and rescue operations with 171 boats deployed in different parts. Altogether 70 people and 459 cattle were rescued in the last 24 hours by different agencies. Damage to roads, bridges, Anganwadi centres and fishery ponds, have been reported from across the state. Assam flood situation grim, nearly 23 lakh people affected in 28 districts

In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the Cachar district, <keyword id="6354915" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Assam" source="Orion">Assam</keyword> <keyword id="11098" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Police" source="Orion">Police</keyword> on Sunday organised a '<keyword id="6435004" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="passport-mela" source="Orion">Passport Mela</keyword>' at Silchar to clear off the pending applications for passports. Almost 1,700 applicants had been given appointments and were asked to remain present along with all the documents required for police verification for getting a passport. Superintendent of Police, Cachar district Numal <keyword id="52339" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mahato" source="Orion">Mahato</keyword> said: "Chief Minister has instructed the police department to be people-centric and expedite all the works related to service to the people. According to the police officer, such initiatives will strengthen the police-public relation. The local authorities of the district court were also requested to be present there so that people who need an affidavit could easily avail of it. The drive continued for the whole day and the police officials set up eight tables to increase the efficacy of the one-day service. Assam Police arrange 'Mela' to clear off pending passport applications

With one more people dead in <keyword id="109597" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="udalguri" source="Orion">Udalguri</keyword> district, the death toll rose to eight in the ongoing pre-monsoon <keyword id="48088" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="floods" source="Orion">floods</keyword> and landslides in <keyword id="6354915" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="assam" source="Orion">Assam</keyword>, where over four lakh people have been affected in 26 districts so far, officials said on Tuesday. Officials in the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said that in the last 24 hours, one person died in western Assam's Udalguri district, while seven people had died earlier in the floods and landslides in <keyword id="385380" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dima-hasao" source="Orion">Dima Hasao</keyword> and Lakhimpur districts. Unofficial report from <keyword id="71093" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="cachar" source="Orion">Cachar</keyword> district, however, said that four people, including a child and two middle-aged men, were washed away in different rivers. An ASDMA bulletin said that at least 4,03,352 people, including 80,659 children and 1,39,541 women, have been affected and around 1,900 houses have been either partially and fully damaged in 1,089 villages under 26 districts. Over 39,558 people have taken shelter in 89 relief camps. The worst-affected districts include, Cachar, Dima Hasao, Hojai, <keyword id="322513" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nagaon" source="Orion">Nagaon</keyword>, Charaideo, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Bajali, Baksa, Biswanath and Lakhimpur. The situation in the hill section of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) in Dima Hasao district remained critical on Tuesday as rain continued to batter the mountainous region, affecting the Lumding-Badarpur single line railway route. NFR officials said that uninterrupted rains coupled with the difficult terrain severely affected the restoration and repair work, which might take several weeks. The Lumding-Badarpur section in Assam is the only route to connect Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and the southern part of Assam with the rest of the country. This rail link has been cut off for the past four days.

Over four lakh people affected as pre-monsoon rains trigger floods in Assam

Assam’s flood situation turned critical after 10 more floodrelated deaths were reported on Monday, increasing the toll to 81. The state government has requisitioned the <keyword id="6355075" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iaf" source="Orion">IAF</keyword> to airlift petrol, diesel and geo bags to the Barak Valley, which remains cut off from rest of the state due to flood and rampant landslides at multiple locations. Seven other people have been reported missing in the floods. According to Assam Disaster Management Authority, over five lakh more people were affected since Sunday which has pushed the number of total number of people hit to over 47 lakh. Of them, over 23 lakh are currently taking shelter in 810 temporary relief camps. Among the dead are Kampur police station OC Sammujal Kakoti and constable <keyword id="14239117" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rajiv-bordoloi" source="Orion">Rajiv Bordoloi</keyword> of Nagaon district. They were swept away by floodwaters on Sunday night on way to rescue some marooned people. Two other accompanying policemen were rescued safely by the SDRF. Assam flood situation gets bleaker as 11 dead and major rivers in spate

(Eds: With updates) Guwahati, May 8 () Five people, who had travelled from Rajasthan to Silchar, tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday, taking the total number of cases in Assam to 58, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.Of the total 58 cases, 23 are active, he said."There are two more COVID-19 patients who travelled in the bus which ferried people from Rajasthan. They are from Cachar district," the minister tweeted.Three other persons tested positive earlier in the day, while four others tested positive on Thursday and another on Wednesday, taking the total number of cases related to this group, who came from Ajmer to 10.The patients have been admitted to Silchar Medical College Hospital.A bus carrying 45 passengers and crew, arrived at Silchar on Wednesday, after being given permission by the Ajmer Deputy Commissioner. Of them 10 have tested positive so far.As the passengers had gone home briefly after screening, several areas in four villages of Cachar district has been declared as containment zones, he said. Direct and indirect contact tracing was still going on and 185 people have been quarantined in facilities so far.There has been a spike in the number of COVID-19 positive cases in Assam with 13 reported in the last 24 hours -- nine from Silchar and four from Guwahati.Among the four positive cases in Guwahati, a 16-year old girl was found positive after she died on Thursday.The minister had earlier told reporters that her sample was taken for COVID-19 test after her death and was found to be positive. It is very unfortunate as she did not get the necessary treatment, Sarma said, adding, "We will have to discuss with the Union Health Ministry whether we can declare her death due to COVID-19 as we did not treat her for the disease and she was found to be positive after her death."The Kamrup (Metro) district administration has declared two hostels and areas around the Guwahati Medical College Hospital, the employers' colony near the B Barooah Cancer Institute where the girl lived with her grandmother and certain areas in Kharghuli and Chandmari as containment zones.One of COVID-19 case in Guwahati is a post-graduate student of the medicine department of Guwahati Medical College Hospital, he said.GMCH has been closed for new patients and 386 people, including its Superintendent Dr R Talukdar, doctors, students and several grade three and four workers, have been quarantined, Sarma said.Their swab tests have been conducted and the results were expected by late Friday night. The medical student was also engaged in the screening of COVID-19 patients from May 4, the minister said.A 55-year-old woman from Kharghuli Hills area of Guwahati has tested positive and admitted to GMCH. Her family members have also been quarantined.The fourth person to test positive in Guwahati had returned from West Bengal on May 6 along with two others in a personal vehicle. Five more test positive for COVID-19, total tally in Assam reaches 58

Guwahati, May 17 () Over 4,500 persons have beenarrested in Assam for violating restrictions during theongoing nationwide lockdown, the Assam Police said on Sunday.The lockdown was first announced by Prime MinisterNarendra Modi on March 24 for 21 days with effect from March25. It was then extended till May 3 and again till May 17.In its daily report on the lockdown, the Assam Policementioned that 2,292 cases have been registered for 3,003incidents since the beginning of the restrictions.Accordingly, 4,513 persons were arrested in connectionwith the cases, it said.The police has also realised a total fine of Rs 2.63crore for violating lockdown norms.It includes Rs 14.66 lakh for not wearing masks inpublic places.Besides, 27,391 vehicles of all types and 34 boatshave been seized from various parts of the state during thisperiod.Action is being taken against those spreadingprovocative content and rumours about COVID-19 on socialmedia, the police said.As on Sunday, 96 cases have been registered and 50persons were arrested, an official release issued by the AssamPolice said.To stop the spread of the deadly novel coronavirus inthe state, there are 26 effective containment zones acrossnine districts, it added.Eleven areas in Cachar district have been declared asa precautionary containment zone, the release said. All the fresh cases were reported from different quarantine centres and hospitals in Guwahati, Tezpur, Jorhat and Silchar, he said in a series of tweets. "Alert, in the biggest one-time spike in cases, 26 cases are confirmed #COVID19 +. They are all from Sarusajai Quarantine Centre," the minister said. Earlier in the day, Sarma said 20 more people had tested positive. Out of these, seven are from Cachar district, six from Sonitpur, two from Sivasagar, and one each from Hailakandi, Dhakuakhana and Udalguri, he said. The remaining two patients had already been admitted to Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) in Guwahati and Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), he said. Assam now has 195 active cases, while 54 people have been discharged from hospitals after being cured. The state has recorded four fatalities due to the contagion. During the day, Sarma inaugurated an intensive care unit (ICU) dedicated for COVID-19 patients at Nagaon Civil Hospital. Talking to reporters, he said the state government will ensure strict implementation of the seven days each of home and institutional quarantine process. "During home quarantine...nobody will be able to leave the premises during the period. We will give them Rs 2,000 worth of food items. (Eds: With fresh inputs) Guwahati, May 22 () Twenty more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Assam, taking the total number of cases to 230, state Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday. All the new COVID-19 patients were already lodged at different quarantine centres in Guwahati, Tezpur, Jorhat and Silchar, he said in a series of tweets. Of the total 230 COVID-19 cases in the state, 169 are active cases, Sarma said in a tweet. While four patients have died due to the deadly virus, 54 have been cured and were discharged from hospitals, he added. Besides, three more have migrated to other states, the minister said. "Alert ~ Eight cases of #COVID19 confirmed... Total count 230; active cases are at 169," he said. Of these cases, six from Cachar district have travel history from outside the state and they were already under quarantine, Sarma said. Of the remaining two, one each are patients of Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) in Guwahati and Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), he added. Earlier, the minister informed that six people, who are lodged at Tezpur quarantine centre, from Sonitpur district tested positive for COVID-19. Sarma also said two people from Silchar quarantine centre, one each from Cachar and Hailakandi districts, while another two are from Sivasagar and staying at Jorhat quarantine centre also tested positive. 20 new COVID-19 cases in Assam; total rises to 230

Guwahati, May 8 () The total number of coronavirus cases in Assam rose to 56 with three persons testing positive for the disease on Friday and the test report of a 16-year-old girl confirmed the infection after her death, Health minister Himanta Biswas Sarma said.The three persons had returned from Rajasthan. The girl was suffering from fever and a pain in her leg. When her condition deteriorated, she was admitted to B Barooah Cancer Hospital on Thursday where she died later, the minister said at a press conference.Her sample, taken for COVID-19 testing, and was found to be positive. It is "very unfortunate as she did not get the necessary treatment", he said."We will have to discuss with the Union Health Ministry whether we can declare that she died due to COVID-19 as we did not treat her for the disease. She was found to be positive after her death," Sarma said.The Kamrup (Metro) district administration has declared two hostels and areas around the Guwahati Medical College Hospital, the employers' colony near the B Barooah Cancer Institute where the girl lived with her grandmother and certain areas in Kharghuli and Chandmari as containment zones.Sarma said of the total cases in the state, 21 are active while 34 have been cured of the disease and one died.The health minister said that a bus carrying 45 passengers had arrived in Silchar on Wednesday from Rajasthan's Ajmer.Three of them tested positive on Friday, taking the the total number of cases related to this particular group to eight. Thirty-three were negative and results of other tests are awaited, he said.Since the passengers had gone home briefly after screening, several areas in four villages of Cachar district have been declared as containment zones, Sarma said, adding direct and indirect contact tracing was on and 185 people have been quarantined in facilities.In the last 24 hours, Assam reported a sudden spike in the number of COVID-19 cases. Of the 11 cases reported since Thursday, nine have travel history.After a post-graduate student of the medicine department of Guwahati Medical College Hospital tested positive for COVID-19, the facility has been closed for new patients and 386 people, including hospital superintendent, doctors, students and several workers, have been quarantined, the health minister said.Their swab tests have been conducted and the results were expected by Friday night. The medical student was engaged in screening of COVID-19 patients from May 4, Sarma said.A 55-year-old woman from Kharghuli Hills area of Guwahati has tested positive and admitted to GMCH. Her family members have also been quarantined.The fourth person to test positive in Guwahati had returned from West Bengal on May 6 along with two others in a personal vehicle. The person has been admitted to Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital while the other two have tested negative, Sarma said."This is the second case with travel history to West Bengal and we have asked the police department not to issue passes to those originating their journey from this state, except in humanitarian cases," the minister said.Sarma said that three positive cases in Guwahati with no travel or contact history indicates that traces of the novel coronavirus may be prevalent in the city."People should, however, not panic but strictly follow the guidelines and report to doctors in case they have influenza-like illness (ILI) and diarrhoea," he said.So far, 1,032 people have entered the state since May 6 through check posts at Srirampur and Chagalia along the Assam-West Bengal border from where they proceeded to the five screening centres at Kokrajhar, Guwahati, Tezpur, Jorhat and Silchar.The minister also said that harassing doctors, nurses and health workers is a non-bailable offence under the Epidemic Control Act and the Disaster Management Act.
