Biotechnology major Bharat Biotechs BSL-3 (Biosafety Level-3) facilities will play a pivotal role in empowering the company's plans to ramp-up production of India's first indigenously developed Covid-19 vaccine. Accordingly, the biotechnology major plans to produce 700 million doses of <keyword id="9485939" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="covaxin">Covaxin</keyword> per annum. The vaccine is regarded as one of the safest in the world and highly efficient against the UK, SA, Brazilian and the new Indian double mutant strain of Covid-19 virus. In a conversation with IANS, Krishna Ella, Chairman and Managing Director of <keyword id="149108" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Biotech">Bharat Biotech</keyword> International said the capacity expansion process has been initiated across multiple facilities since early 2021. Presently, the company manufactures 20 million doses per month of Covaxin which are supplied to the <keyword id="210071" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Health">Ministry of Health</keyword> for the national vaccine rollout. "Manufacturing scale up has been carried out in a stepwise manner across multiple facilities at Hyderabad, and Bangalore," he said. "Inactivated vaccines, while highly safe, are extremely complex and expensive to manufacture, resulting in lower yields when compared to live virus vaccines." Notably, Bharat Biotech is able to expand Covaxin manufacturing capacity mainly due to the availability of four new specially designed BSL-3 facilities. In industry parlance, a BSL-3 facility is equipped to safely handle infectious biological pathogens in the highest stringent environmentally controlled manufacturing facility. At present, the company has four facilities BSL-3 facilities two in Hyderabad and two in Bengaluru. "These facilities have been repurposed due to a strong pre-existing expertise in development of <keyword id="11129299" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="viral-vaccines">viral vaccines</keyword> and know-how applied to manufacture, test and release the highly purified inactivated viral vaccine." The company has recently entered into a 'Master Collaborative Agreement' (<keyword id="6355225" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="mca">MCA</keyword>) with <keyword id="1906647" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="CSIR-Indian-Institute-of-Chemical-Technology">CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology</keyword> (CSIR-IICT), to collaborate on the development of novel platform technologies in developing a synthetic process route for adjuvant molecule 'TLR 7/8' for Covaxin. Bharat Biotech uses a proprietary adjuvant Algel-IMDG, that has now proven to be a safe and effective adjuvant, especially to stimulate memory T cell responses. The synthesis and manufacture of the <keyword id="11174611" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="imdg">IMDG</keyword> component has been successfully indigenised and will be manufactured at commercial scale within the country. This is the first instance where a novel adjuvant has been commercialised in India. Besides, the company has secured long term components, packing materials and single use consumables supplies for the manufacturing ramp-up To further increase bulk capacity Bharat Biotech has entered into agreements with Indian Immunologicals (IIL) to manufacture the drug substance for Covaxin. "The technology transfer process is well underway and IIL has adequate capabilities to manufacture inactivated viral vaccines at commercial scale and under required 'GMP' standard." "We are also looking forward to getting into manufacturing partnerships in other countries." Currently, Covaxin has received 'Emergency Use Authorizations' in several countries across the globe with another 60 in process. Bharat Biotech's BSL-3 aims to produce 700 million doses of Covaxin per annum

A recent survey conducted by <keyword id="64925" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="CSIR">CSIR</keyword> (Council of Scientific Industrial Research), <keyword id="6377129" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-of-india">Government of India</keyword>, has revealed that <keyword id="6575406" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="smokers">smokers</keyword> and vegetarians are less likely to contract <keyword id="8864712" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19-infection">Covid-19 infection</keyword>. The survey suggested smoking may be protective, despite Covid-19 being a respiratory disease, due to its role in increasing the mucous production that may be acting as the first line of defence among the <keyword id="3174643" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="smoking-population">smoking population</keyword>. It indicated that vegetarian food rich in fibre may have a role to play in providing immunity against COVID-19 due to its anti-inflammatory properties by modification of gut microbiota. The pan India survey was conducted by an eminent team of 140 doctors and research scientists to study the presence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, and their neutralization capability to infer possible risk factors for infection. The study assessed 10,427 adult individuals working in more than 40 CSIR laboratories and centers in urban and semi-urban settings spread across and their family members. These people voluntarily participated in the study. Earlier, two studies from France and similar reports from Italy, New York, and China reported lower Covid infection rates among smokers. A study by America's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (<keyword id="6379474" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="cdc">CDC</keyword>), which examined over 7,000 people who tested positive for COVID-19, also vindicated the above findings. Interestingly, the study found that only 1.3 per cent of survey participants were smokers, compared to the CDC report that 14 per cent of all Americans smoke. Similarly, UCL (<keyword id="174869" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-College-London">University College London</keyword>) academics that looked at 28 papers across the UK, China, US, and France found the proportions of smokers among hospital patients were 'lower than expected. One of its studies showed that in the UK the proportion of smokers among COVID-19 patients was just five per cent, a third of the national rate of 14.4 per cent. Another found in France the rate being four times lower (7.1 per cent vs 32 per cent among all population). In China, a study noted that only 3.8 per cent of patients were smokers - despite more than half of the population regularly smoking cigarettes. In a separate study by Jin-jin Zhang to understand the influence of smoking behaviour on the susceptibility to <keyword id="1754604" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">Coronavirus</keyword> observed that only 9 (6.4 per cent) patients had a history of smoking, and 7 of them were past smokers. The study found that smoking populations were less likely to be infected with SARS-CoV-2. These findings were also confirmed by a French study of public health data that showed people who smoke, were 80 per cent less likely to fall prey to COVID-19 than non-smokers of the same age and sex. Smokers and vegetarians may be less vulnerable to COVID-19 infection, says a government research organisation

The National Testing Agency (<keyword id="654916" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NTA">NTA</keyword>) is expected to announce the results of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (<a href="https://indianexpress.com/about/csir-ugc-net/">CSIR</a>) National Eligibility Test by University Grants Commission (UGC-NET) today i.e. January 14, 2020, according to media reports. Earlier, the results were to be declared on December 31, 2019. NTA conducted the examination for chemical sciences, earth atmospheric ocean and planetary science, life science, mathematical sciences and physical sciences on December 6. Candidates can check their results on the official website at <a href="https://csirnet.nta.nic.in/webinfo/public/home.aspx">csirnet.nta.nic.in</a>. Alternatively, applicants can also visit ntanet.nic.in. As many as 2,82,116 candidates appeared for the computer-based exam for research fellowship. Mumbai, Jul 8 () The IIT Alumni Council, which is setting up the world's largest molecular diagnostic lab 'MegaLab Mumbai', on Wednesday signed an agreement with the CSIR Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (CSIR-IGIB) to jointly conduct research on COVID-19 and patient data analysis. The council has also handed over the world's largest imaging data of 8,500 patients from the megapolis, collected from temporary pandemic facility set up at the National Sports Club of India Dome (NSCI Dome), to CSIR-IGIB, according to a joint statement. The CSIR-IGIB, formerly Centre for Biochemical Technology, is a constituent laboratory set up by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). This data will soon be available in de-identified form and on an open data platform that is being developed by the council, to help the CSIR-IGIB and the Indian Council of Medical Research contain the coronavirus pandemic. The joint research will create an ecosystem for the pandemic diagnostics, therapeutics and preparedness, besides bringing about an enabling value chain with expertise, spanning digital health, artificial intelligence, molecular diagnostics, next-generation sequencing, antibody harvesting, and production of monoclonal antibodies. CSIR-IGIB Director Anurag Agrawal said, "I look forward to seeing the world's largest and fastest molecular diagnostic line getting built with 100 per cent indigenous technology. Similar thinking would be needed to accelerate population-scale testing in rare genetic disorders, a problem that the IGIB has been addressing for over a decade,". IIT Alumni Council President Ravi Sharma said, "This partnership is an opportunity not only to create a world-leading testing and treatment ecosystem but also to establish global data leadership. This would enable open data access to every scientist and innovator to develop testing and treatment solutions." Late May, the Council had announced the launch of the world's largest virology lab testing centre with a capacity of conducting one crore tests. While the first phase with a capacity to carry out 10 lakh tests will be ready by the end of the month, the second and third phases spanning over the next 100 days will see the capacity being ramped up to one crore. The IIT Alumni Council is the largest body of alumni, students and faculty from all the 23 IITs and partnering Technical Institutes of Excellence and was formed last year to carry out projects of social importance. But due to lack of demand, thesemolecules were not widely marketed, according to IICT sources.However, the CSIR-IICT decided to work on three suchmolecules -- remdesivir, favipiravir and baloxavir.  The 40- feet- long “mobile water purification bus” started from the coastal town of Bhavnagar in <keyword id="6354766" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword>. It was indigenously developed by the Council of Science and Industrial Research. The bus contained an RO desalination and ultrafiltration plant. It also has a TFC membrane filtration that filters viruses and bacteria from the water. A similar bus was used to help the flood-affected Kerala. Cyclone Fani has been the strongest cyclone to hit India in 43 years. As many as 800,000 people were reportedly evacuated just before the cyclone made landfall in the eastern coast of India. In fact, <keyword id="50863" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhubaneswar">Bhubaneswar</keyword>, the capital of Odisha lost over one million trees and 64 lives because of the deadly cyclone that came at a speed of 165-200km on May 2. However, there were no major casualties.
