Dehradun (<keyword id="19918812" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttarakhand" source="keywords">Uttarakhand</keyword>) [India] August 1 (ANI): At least 10 people have died and the concrete bridge and footbridge on the <keyword id="173656" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kedarnath" source="Orion">Kedarnath</keyword> route have been damaged, following <keyword id="20354772" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="heavy-rain" source="keywords">heavy rain</keyword> in the area informed Uttarakhand State Disaster Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman on Thursday. "All the routes of Chardham are open, only the footpath in Kedarnath has been obstructed. 100 other routes are obstructed; efforts are being made continuously to open them" the Chief secretary said. Earlier on Thursday Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inspected the disaster-affected areas. The Chief Minister held a review meeting with officials at the State Emergency Operation Centre to assess the situation of rescue and <keyword id="22080122" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="relief-operations" source="keywords">relief operations</keyword> in areas affected by heavy rainfall. During the meeting, <keyword id="19930273" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CM-Dhami" source="keywords">CM Dhami</keyword> said that rescue teams had been active throughout the night, relocating people to safety due to the impact of the rains. "We received information about the disruption of life in many areas across the state. Consequently, rescue teams worked through the night to move people to safer locations," he said The Chief Minister assured that he is maintaining constant communication with the local administration. He instructed the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams to remain on high alert in the affected regions. "I have directed officials to assist those affected by the heavy rainfall and to relocate individuals endangered by rising rivers and drains to safer places. Everyone has been instructed to stay vigilant," CM Dhami said after the meeting. He also mentioned that relief and <keyword id="20501159" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rescue-operations" source="keywords">rescue operations</keyword> are ongoing in severely affected areas such as Rambada, Bhimbali, and Jakhaniyali. The Chief Minister directed that all officers should keep in mind that whatever funds are required for evacuating people from sensitive areas to safe places, relief and rescue operations, reconstruction and rehabilitation from a security point of view, will be sanctioned by the government immediately. All the District Magistrates were directed to coordinate at the local level and take immediate action upon receiving information about any disaster, giving priority to the safety of the public without any laxity. Earlier, the Uttarakhand government also issued a safety advisory for <keyword id="20821555" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chardham-Yatra" source="keywords">Chardham Yatra</keyword> pilgrims amid forecasts of heavy rainfall across the state. Authorities have appealed to devotees to delay their journeys until weather conditions improve and to remain in safe locations. DGP Abhinav Kumar has urged pilgrims and devotees to be cautious and to start their journey only after breaks. He emphasized the importance of staying in safe places and following local authorities' instructions. "The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for heavy rain in most districts of Uttarakhand. Your safety is our priority," the DGP said.

In a meeting between the administration and the locals, it was announced that a compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh would be provided to the affected families, which was refused by the locals. Hotel Mount View and Malari Inn were scheduled to be demolished on Tuesday. T Singh Rana, the owner of Malari Inn and his family have been sitting outside the premises and raising demands for compensation. As soon as the officials reached the spot, the hotel owners started opposing the action and alleged that the economic evaluation of their structures had not been done. They added that no notice had been given to them by the administration. In view of the escalating protests, the administration had to step back and postpone the drive to Wednesday. Disaster Management Secretary Dr Ranjit Sinha said that cranes were needed to demolish tall buildings which could not be arranged in the area. He informed that a crane had been sent from Dehradun, which would arrive on Wednesday. Chief Secretary Dr S.S. Sandhu, in a meeting on Tuesday, instructed that the affected buildings which may pose a threat to life should be demolished on a priority basis. 723 buildings declared unsafe, 86 marked with red crosses: The number of unsafe buildings in the holy city has reached 723, with 45 identified as unsafe on Tuesday. Out of these, 86 buildings have been declared completely unsafe and marked with red crosses. Their demolition process is said to start soon. The district administration has so far temporarily moved out 462 families. On Tuesday, 381 people were shifted to safer places while 81 families had been shifted earlier. A total of 344 rooms have been acquired by the administration in various institutions and buildings to accommodate 1,425 people. The Home Ministry team headed by the Border Management Secretary reached the city on Tuesday to assess the situation. Apart from this, teams of central agencies including the National Geophysical Research Institute, National Institutes of Health, Central Building Research Institute and the National Institute of Disaster Management have been camping in the area. Chamoli District Magistrate <keyword id="11971508" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="himanshu-khurana" source="Orion">Himanshu Khurana</keyword> said that the decision to demolish the hotels immediately had been taken under the Disaster Act, failing which the surrounding residential buildings, highway and the drinking water and electricity lines might get damaged. In areas vulnerable to landslides, the administration has instructed the Energy Corporation to remove power lines, under which connections of 20 unsafe buildings were disconnected on Tuesday. The 45-year-old will be the youngest chief minister of the state and replaces <keyword id="1498654" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tirath-Singh-Rawat">Tirath Singh Rawat</keyword>, who resigned on Friday night within four months of taking charge from <keyword id="2253089" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trivendra-Singh-Rawat">Trivendra Singh Rawat</keyword>. Dhami will be sworn in on Sunday, Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar told reporters after a legislature party meeting at the state BJP headquarters where he was a central observer. "My party has appointed a common worker, son of an ex-serviceman, who was born in the border district of Pithoragarh to serve the people. "We'll work on people's issues with the cooperation of all. I will carry forward the work done by my predecessors," Dhami, a two-time MLA from Khatima in Udham Singh Nagar district, said. As Dhami takes over less than a year ahead of the next assembly elections, his biggest challenge lies in leading the BJP to another victory and retaining power in Uttarakhand, where the party has been plagued by factionalism. Changing chief ministers twice in a short span has not helped the party's image, with the opposition Congress accusing it of causing "political instability" and betraying the people. "We accept the challenge and we will take forward the party and serve the people," Dhami said when asked whether taking over as CM just months ahead of assembly polls will be an uphill task.
