This overwhelming majority of the BJP in Gujarat depicts the absolute faith of the people in Patel's leadership. Patel has vast experience in administration, having served as the Chairman of the Standing Committee of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and as a Corporator for Thaltej ward from 2010 to 2015. He began his political career in 1995 when he was appointed as the Chairman of the Standing Committee of Memnagar municipality. He served the municipality for over a decade, becoming Chairman of the local body during 1999-2000 and 2004-2006. He also served as the Vice Chairman of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation School Board between 2008 and 2010. Later on, he served as a Corporator from Thaltej ward from 2010 to 2015. During this tenure, he served as the Chairman of the Standing Committee of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). In 2015, he was appointed as the chairman of the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA). In 2017, Patel became a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the first time, by winning the election from Ghatlodia constituency with a wide margin of 1,17,000 votes. Born on July 15, 1962, in Ahmedabad, Patel holds a Diploma in Civil Engineering from Government Polytechnic, Ahmedabad. He is a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He is also an active member of Pandit Deendayal Library managed by RSS at Memnagar. The BJP created history in Gujarat with a landslide victory in the 2022 election and its 7th consecutive win. It is the party's largest win in Gujarat since the state's formation in 1960. It is an important win for the BJP. Inspector Manjit of the NDRF said that Dwarka has experienced heavy rainfall over the past two days. "In the last two days, there has been heavy rainfall in Dwarka...water has entered people's homes...our team has rescued 95 people so far," Manjit said on Wednesday. Earlier, Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said that more than 5,000 people have been rehabilitated and over 12,000 people rescued as of Wednesday from the floods following the heavy rains that lashed the city of Vadodara. Speaking to ANI, Patel said on Wednesday, "We have rehabilitated more than 5,000 people so far and more than 12,000 people have been rescued. The Vishwamitri River flows through Vadodara, and water has entered both sides...for those people who are trapped there, we have arranged all necessary facilities to provide them with food and medicines." Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephonic conversation with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and assured him of all possible support and assistance from the Central government. He also said that Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina requested approval from India to come at very short notice and she arrived on the evening of Monday. "On August 5, demonstrators converged in Dhaka despite the curfew. Our understanding is that after a meeting with leaders of the security establishment, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina apparently made the decision to resign. At very short notice, she requested approval to come for the moment to India. We simultaneously received a request for flight clearance from Bangladesh authorities. She arrived yesterday evening in Delhi," he said. The External Affairs Minister also mentioned that the government is monitoring the situation with regard to the minorities living in Bangladesh. Jaishankar noted that ties between India and Bangladesh are exceptionally close.

Twenty seven persons, including four children, were killed and three others injured in the massive fire that swept through the game zone in Nana-Mava locality of Gujarat's <keyword id="6361800" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajkot" source="Orion">Rajkot</keyword> city Saturday evening, as per officials. President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and PM Modi had expressed grief over the incident. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited Rajkot on Sunday morning. He inspected the fire tragedy site and also met family members of the victims. He offered condolences to the bereaved families, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said in a press statement. Patel later held a high-level review meeting at the Hirasar Airport in Rajkot regarding the rescue and relief work, treatment of the injured, and other measures taken by the local administration. During the meeting, he instructed the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and take strict and punitive action against those responsible for the tragedy, the CMO said. The CM was briefed about the prompt action taken by fire teams of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) and police in carrying out the rescue and relief operations soon after the fire incident was reported. For the identification of the bodies, their samples were collected and sent for DNA analysis to a forensic science laboratory in Gandhinagar through an air ambulance, officials informed the CM. They also told the CM that priority was given to shifting the injured persons to hospital and saving people from the fire. A burns ward with a capacity of 100 beds was set up at the civil hospital and surgeons and trained nurses were immediately called to Rajkot from Jamnagar, Ahmedabad, Morbi, Junagadh, and Bhavnagar, as per the release. Additional Director General of Police Subhash Trivedi and other members of the state-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) reached Rajkot late Saturday night to carry out a probe into the cause of the incident and hand over a preliminary report to the Gujarat government within three days. Gujarat Director General of Police (DGP) Vikas Sahay has ordered the closure of all game zones in different cities of the state as a precautionary measure, and safety measures including related to fire are being verified, the chief minister was told in the meeting.

In a statement, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said work is on to clear roads by removing fallen trees. According to officials, more than 6,000 people living along the banks of the Narmada river in Bharuch district have been shifted to safer places in the last two days after the water level rose to 40 feet due to discharge from the Sardar Sarovar Dam. Several areas in Bharuch city and tehsil and many localities and villages in Ankleshwar are still under knee-deep water even though the water level has been decreasing slowly since Monday morning. The current water level of the Narmada river is 37.72 feet, nearly 10 feet above the danger mark of 28 feet, at the Golden Bridge that connects Ankleshwar to Bharuch, said an official of Bharuch District Emergency Response Centre (BDERC). On Sunday, the water level of the river went up to 40 feet at the bridge due to heavy discharge of water from the Sardar Sarovar Dam (SSD) located upstream. Dandiya Bazaar and other areas in Bharuch city, and several societies and villages in Ankleshwar city and taluka are still inundated in knee-deep water. The situation is improving gradually as water is slowly decreasing, the BDERC official said. In view of heavy rains in different parts of Gujarat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said he has been in constant touch with collectors of the affected districts. "Relief and rescue operations are being carried out wherever needed with the help of 10 teams of both NDRF and SDRF. In all, nearly 11,900 persons living in low-lying areas of Vadodara, Bharuch, Narmada, Dahod, Panchmahal, Anand and Gandhinagar districts were shifted to shelter homes. "As many as 270 stranded citizens were rescued by the administration while work is on to clear roads by removing fallen trees," CM Patel said. Meanwhile, Army personnel rescued 12 people stranded on a small island in the Narmada river passing from Karjan taluka in Vadodara district after a 48-hour operation, a government release said. "After 48 hours of rescue operation, Army personnel successfully rescued and brought these 12 people, including women and children, on the shore on Monday morning using boats," it stated. The India Meteorological Department said "extremely heavy rainfall" occurred at isolated places in Arvalli, Mahisagar, Panchmahal, and Sabarkantha districts during the last 24 hours ending at 8:30 am (on Monday). The IMD predicted "light to moderate" rain at several places across Gujarat on Monday and Tuesday. As per the rainfall data shared by the State Emergency Operations Centre, 29 tehsils received more than 40 mm downpour between 6 am and 2 pm on Monday. Visavadar taluka in Junagadh district received 283 mm of rainfall in the eight hours till 2 pm. Visavadar was followed by Mendarda taluka in Junagadh (165 mm), Radhanpur in Patan (156 mm), Bhabhar in Banaskantha (144 mm), Vanthali in Junagadh (129 mm), Deodar in Banaskantha (108 mm), Deesa in Banaskantha (91 mm), Mehsana tehsil (91 mm) and Bagsara in Amreli district (91 mm).

New Delhi, A 108-foot-long incense stick, a 2,100-kg bell, a giant lamp weighing 1,100 kg, gold footwear, a 10-foot-high lock and key, and a clock that simultaneously denotes time in eight countries are among the special gifts sent for the Ram temple in Ayodhya ahead of the consecration ceremony on January 22. The artistes behind the unique gifts are hoping their gifts will be used at the grand temple. Adding to the religious fervour, the gifts are being received from all parts of the country and even abroad. More than 3,000 gifts for Lord Ram from Sita's birthplace in Janakpur in Nepal have arrived in Ayodhya. The gifts, including silver shoes, ornaments and clothes, were transported in a convoy of around 30 vehicles from the Janakpur Dham Ramjanaki Temple in Nepal to Ayodhya this week. A Sri Lankan delegation also visited Ayodhya with a special gift from the <keyword id="1325545" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ashok-vatika" source="Orion">Ashok Vatika</keyword>. The delegation presented a rock from the Ashok Vatika, a garden mentioned in the epic Ramayana where Ravan captivated Sita. The first phase of the temple is nearing completion and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take part in the consecration ceremony at the temple on January 22. The Supreme Court delivered a historic verdict in 2019, settling a temple-mosque dispute that dated back more than a century. The court backed the construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site and ruled that an alternative five-acre plot must be found for building a mosque. Ahead of the grand ceremony, the temple authorities have been receiving numerous gifts. A 108-foot-long incense stick, which weighs 3,610 kg and is almost 3.5 feet wide, has been prepared in Gujarat's Vadodara over a period of six months. "The stick is environmental friendly and will last for about one-and-a-half months, spreading its fragrance over several kilometers," Vadodara resident Viha Bharwad, who has prepared the incense stick, told PTI. He said 376 kg guggul (gum resin), 376 kg coconut shells, 190 kg ghee, 1,470 kg cow dung, 420 kg herbs are among the ingredients used for the stick, whose height is nearly half of the iconic Qutab Minar in Delhi. Bharwad and 25 other devotees left Vadodara with the huge incense stick on January 1 and their convoy will reach Ayodhya on January 18. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel flagged off a 44-foot-long brass flag pole and other smaller six flag poles in Ahmedabad last week for the "pran pratistha" ceremony. Gujarat has also sent a nagaru (temple drum) crafted by the All India Dabgar Samaj in Dariyapur. The 56-inch nagaru made of gold foil will be installed in the courtyard of the temple. Satya Prakash Sharma, a locksmith from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, has prepared a lock and key weighing 400 kg with 10 feet height, 4.6 feet width and 9.5 inches thickness. "This is the world's largest lock and key. I have gifted it to the trust so it can be used as a symbolic lock at the temple," he told PTI. A bell weighing 2,100 kg made of 'ashtadhatu' (an alloy of eight metals) has been prepared in Etah's Jalesar in Uttar Pradesh. "It took two years to prepare the bell. The bell is being sent to Ayodhya after performing all rituals and with pomp and show," said an artisan involved in preparing the bell. A Lucknow-based vegetable vendor has especially designed a clock that denotes the time in eight countries at the same time. Anil Kumar Sahu (52) said he gifted the clock measuring 75 cm in diameter to Champat Rai, the general secretary of the temple trust. Sahu said that he first made the clock in 2018, and it was given the 'certificate of registration of design' by the Patent Office, Government of India. The clock denotes the time of India, Tokyo (Japan), Moscow (Russia), Dubai (UAE), Beijing (China), Singapore, Mexico City (Mexico), Washington DC and New York (US). Chef Vishnu Manohar, who is based in Nagpur, has announced that he will prepare 7,000 kg of "Ram Halwa", a traditional sweet dish, for the devotees who will attend the consecration ceremony. The Shri Krishna Janmasthan Seva Sansthan in Mathura is preparing to send 200 kilograms of laddu to Ayodhya as an offering for a 'yagya'. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the official custodian of Sri Venkateswara temple in Tirupati, has also announced it will send one lakh laddu for distribution to devotees on the big day. A special saree prepared in Gujarat's Surat city, a major textile hub of the country, will be sent to the templ authorities. The saree, with pictures of Lord Ram and the Ayodhya temple printed on it, is meant for Lord Ram's wife Sita, reverentially known as Ma Janaki, and the first piece was offered to a temple in Surat on Sunday. A diamond merchant from Surat has made a necklace on the theme of the Ram temple using 5,000 American diamonds and 2 kg silver. Forty artisans completed the design in 35 days and the necklace has been gifted to the Ram Mandir trust. With an unwavering devotion towards Lord Ram and a desire to fulfil his 'kar sevak' father's dream, 64-year-old Challa Srinivas Sastry from Hyderabad has reached Ayodhya on foot, covering a distance of nearly 8,000 km, to present gold-plated footwear for the lord. Arvindbhai Mangalbhai Patel, a farmer residing in Vadodara, has crafted a giant lamp weighing 1,100 kg. "The lamp is 9.25 feet high and 8 feet wide. It has a capacity for 851 kg of ghee. The lamp is made from 'panchadhatu' (gold, silver, copper, zinc and iron)," Patel said.

Cyclone Biparjoy: IMD issues Orange alert for Saurashtra, Kutch coasts in Gujarat

New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): After making landfall in Gujarat's coastal areas, Cyclone 'Biaprjoy', has weakened into a 'deep depression' and is further expected to weaken into a 'depression' in the next 12 hours, <keyword id="6355166" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india-meteorological-department" source="Orion">India Meteorological Department</keyword> (IMD) said in the wee hours of Saturday. According to IMD, the cyclonic storm weakened into a 'deep depression' at 11:30 pm on Friday over Southeast Pakistan. "Cyclonic Storm <keyword id="13860733" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="biparjoy" source="Orion">Biparjoy</keyword> weakened into a Deep Depression at 2330 hours IST of yesterday, the 16th June, 2023 over Southeast Pakistan adjoining Southwest Rajasthan and Kutch about 100 km northeast of Dholavira. To weaken further into a Depression during next 12 hours," IMD said in a tweet. Meanwhile, earlier it was reported that several trees were uprooted in Bhuj, Kutch, due to the impact of the cyclone. "Twenty-four animals have died and 23 people have been injured. Electricity supply has been interrupted in about a thousand villages. 800 trees have fallen. A private security official manning the queues estimated that well around 10,000 people had paid last respects till 9.30 pm. Among those struggling to gain entry was a 72-year-old man, hailing from a nearby village. "I had a surgery on my leg several years ago and it's permanently disabled," the elderly man told PTI and recalled Yadav as a "great leader". The pradhan of Saifai, Ramphal Valmiki, said people from all over the country and various districts of Uttar Pradesh, who had been in touch with 'Netaji' or were his followers, both political and non-political, will reach here to pay their last respects. A huge pandal has been set up at the place where the last rites will be performed for people to sit and watch, Valmiki said. All members of Netaji's family are present in Saifai, he added. Yadav, a former defence minister who had also served as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh three times, passed away at 82 on Monday.
