They underwent self-isolation at home till the concerned authorities gave them the clearance certificate on June 22. The last few weeks have been tough for the 50-year-old pistol ace, who won a whopping seven medals, including two gold, at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, a feat that earned him the best athlete award of that edition. He is accustomed to facing challenges. "But this was very different," Jung said. "I would say don't panic to those diagnosed with COVID but, at the same time, we can't take it lightly. The feeling that we will not get the infection should not be there at all. You have to be extremely careful," he added. Jung, now a coach of the national pistol team, said his aim was to stay away from negativity after he was told that he tested positive for COVID-19 on June 5, two days after giving his samples. "So I decided to stay away from all these whatsapp messages and television. Though there were some tough days, I was determined to be positive all along," he said. New Delhi, May 22 () An official of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been found positive for the novel coronavirus, the first case such being detected in the federal contingency force, officials said on Friday. They said the Sub-Inspector rank official was on leave and had gone to a doctor for some other treatment after which his COVID-19 test was done. The NDRF official has been admitted to an isolation ward in the Central Armed Police Forces' (CAPFs) Referral hospital in Greater Noida on Thursday. The official is posted in the headquarters of the force here and was on deputation from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), they said. The NDRF, raised in 2006, is a 12-battalion strong force of the central government for disaster response and its over 40 teams are currently deployed in Odisha and West Bengal for relief and rescue works in the wake of cyclone 'Amphan'. The CAPFs -- CRPF, ITBP, BSF, CISF and SSB -- have over 400 active cases of COVID-19 among them at present and they have also reported seven deaths. A personnel of the elite counter-terrorist force, NSG, has also been infected with the disease early this month. NDRF Sub-Inspector reports COVID-19 positive; first case in federal contingency force

Lakhimpur (Assam), May 1 () At least five people, including four security personnel, were injured in stone pelting when they tried to prevent a religious gathering at a village in Assam's Lakhimpur district, police said on Friday. The incident occurred on Thursday night when a police team, led by Naoboicha police outpost incharge Biswajit Nath, went to the Dakkhin Pandhowa village after getting information about people gathering at a mosque to offer namaz. "The police got the information from the village head about the gathering," an officer told . The police team reached there and found 12 people, including the imam, inside the mosque. They requested the imam and others not to gather, and asked them to follow the rules on social distancing, the officer said. The team closed a small market that was operating next to the mosque before entering the complex, he said. "When the team was about to leave the mosque complex, heavy stone pelting started. This caught our team completely in an off-guard situation," the officer said. Four personnel and the village head received were injured. The police vehicle was also damaged, and the windscreen and side windows were broken. Those injured are Nath, Assam Police constable Karuna Buzarbaruah, CISF personnel Bhumichar Narzary and Saroj Yadav, and village head Abdul Jalil Fareshi. They were immediately sent to a hospital for treatment. Their injuries are not serious, the police said. Senior officials visited the place, which is around 30 km from the district headquarters, late on Thursday night and made announcements in loudspeakers asking people to stay indoors. Heavy police deployment has been made in the village. An FIR has been registered at the Lakhimpur police station against 12 people, including the imam of the mosque, and investigation is underway. When contacted, Lakhimpur Superintendent of Police Rajveer told : "At a time when the entire state is proactively following lockdown norms, such an incident is unwanted and we strongly condemn it. We will take strict actions against the culprits." Police said a few villagers started offering namaz at the mosque since the holy month of Ramzan began. New Delhi, Apr 9 () The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has started distributing specially procured 'dignity kits', each containing basic toiletries, a pair of clothes and hygiene items for both men and women, to the needy and those displaced by the lockdown enforced in the country to contain the spread of coronavirus.NDRF Director General (DG) S N Pradhan told the force has distributed over 8,800 such kits through its battalions based in Noida, Gorakhpur and Chandauliin Uttar Pradesh, Gaya in Bihar, Guntur, Nellore and Krishna districts in Andhra Pradesh, and Vadodara and Gandhinagar in Gujarat.It is for the first time that the disaster response body has distributed such kits. "These kits were procured by us about six months back. The kit contains basic survival essentials for people who have been displaced or who are not able to purchase these items due to lack of money," the NDRF chief said.A standard 'dignity kit' for women, packed in a plastic bucket, contains a small toothpaste, brush, bathing and washing soaps, two pairs of undergarments, towel, oil, comb, two pairs of salwar suits in different sizes, a nail cutter, mirror, a packet with 10 sanitary pads, an anti-septic cream and a mug.The men's kit also contains similar items and has two pairs of 'pyjama-kurta' instead of the women's attire, and a shaving pack instead of feminine hygiene products.The force has distributed over 8,800 such kits to both males and females till now and has a total reserve of 15,000 'dignity kits' for men and 25,000 for women, the official said.The kits have been distributed among the 12 NDRF battalions in the country and they are distributing them to the needy as per requirement, Pradhan said.The federal disaster contingency force had made this first-time procurement of 'dignity kits' under the national disaster response reserve (NDRR) that is meant to provide primary survival kit to victims. Global disaster response procedures mandate that the victims are provided basic sanitation and surviving items so that they can sustain themselves for some time in the aftermath of a calamity. A senior official said during the ongoing lockdown many migrant workers and daily wagers started moving from metro cities to their homes in far off states, leading to a situation where they had no means to carry out their daily activities and ablutions in a hygienic manner.The dignity kits were procured by the NDRF with the sole reason that during disasters like floods, earthquakes and other calamities, the victims are displaced from their homes and their essential items are either damaged or left behind, he said.NDRF chief Pradhan also said the force has divided the about 13,000 personnel-strong force into 84 small teams across the country and they can be deployed for any contingency in any state in the wake of the COVID-19 spread."We have also equipped our teams with personal protective equipments (PPEs). At present 60 per cent of our manpower has them and it will be hundred per cent availability in the coming days," the DG said.Our teams are on standby and can assist any state or respond to any emergency as and when required, he said.The force recently helped the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration for contact tracing of Tablighi Jamaat members and about 15 such people were found. These are premier investigative and intelligence-gathering organisations of the central government and the officials of these agencies have been admitted to the CAPFs Referral hospital as it is a designated COVID-19 facility for central police organisations, a senior official said. The hospital is also treating about 45 personnel from the elite commando force, National Security Guard (NSG), and four from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). However, these NSG staffers are not from the combat counter-terrorist units but from various administrative wings of the "black cats" force. The NSG was raised in 1984 for specialist counter-terrorist, counter-hijack and hostage-rescue operations. The other coronavirus patients from these organisations based in Delhi and the National Capital Region are being admitted to other medical facilities in the region, besides the AIIMS in Haryana's Jhajjar, the official said. The data states that the speciality hospital is treating a total of 131 personnel from the central paramilitary forces and police organisations at present, apart from some retired personnel and a few family members of CAPF personnel. The 200-bedded facility, built at a cost of Rs 121 crore, was inaugurated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in October, 2018, who was the home minister at the time, and is run by border-guarding force Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). It has a team of 153 doctors, nurses, paramedics and ward boys. Over 240 personnel of the central paramilitary forces, also known as the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), have been discharged after recovering from coronavirus. After the ITBP and BSF chief S S Deswal recently declared that the health facilities of these two forces will also serve their veterans, the families of troops killed in action and their dependents for COVID-19, the hospital has also admitted such individuals. The doctors at this facility are treating about 11 family members of ex-CAPF personnel and veterans. The hospital boasts of a modern pathology laboratory, a radiology department, an operation theatre and different departments such as paediatrics, ophthalmology, general medicine, ENT and orthopedics, among others. According to the latest data, the five CAPFs -- CRPF, ITBP, BSF, CISF and SSB -- and two other central forces -- NSG and NDRF -- have reported over 1,880 coronavirus cases. While more than 1,220 troops have been cured or have recovered, 670 are under treatment, the data said. Delhi Metro put on 'red alert' citing security threat after India abolished Kashmir's right to make its own laws

New Delhi, Apr 23 () Two more persons died of COVID-19, while 128 more tested positive for the infection in the national capital on Thursday, raising the total number of the pandemic fatalities to 50 and infected cases to 2,236 here till date, said officials.The new corona-positive cases include those of a 12-member family, also comprising a two-month-old infant, of the Walled City area and 46 others of North Delhi's Jahangirpuri area found infected, they said.The number of containment zones in the city too rose to 92, said a Delhi Health Department's bulletin issued on ThursdayThe bulletin said 84 patients were cured of the infection and discharged on the day.It said since April 18, there had been a steep rise in the rate of recovery of COVID-19 patients with 735of the cured 808 patients recovering in a short span of only six days.The bulletin put the total number of active cases at 1,518 on Thursday.In wake of attacks on healthcare personnel, Delhi Chief Secretary Vijay Dev constituted a six-member team to frame security protocol for medicare workers, officials told .They said the police commissioner will also appoint two nodal officers who will take immediate action in cases of attacks on healthcare personnel.On Thursday, an ordinance that makes acts of violence against healthcare personnel or damage to property during an epidemic a cognisable offence came into effect. In the Walled City are of the national capital, 12 members of a family, including a two-month-old child, residing in a containment zone, tested positive for COVID-19 infection. All of them have been sent to the LNJP Hospital.A man in the family had returned from Uzbekistan last month but did not inform authorities. Later, he started having COVID-19 symptoms, like coughing and breathless, following which he was tested and found infected, they said.His test result came positive recently, following which 11 other family members living in Churiwalan area in the Walled City, were also tested and all of them tested positive for infection, said officials.In another case, 46 people tested positive for the infection in North Delhi's Jahangirpuri.They said the cases were detected in three streets of the H Block which was sealed by the district administration on April 14 after members of a family tested positive recently."Forty-six people living in H Block of Jahangirpuri tested positive for COVID-19. This area has already been sealed after detailed screening was carried out and samples taken," North District Magistrate Deepak Shinde said.Earlier this week, thirty-one members of an extended family, including children, residing in Jahangirpuri area, had tested positive for the virus.With the coronavirus infection rising among the Delhi Police personnel, Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal directed authorities to create a dedicated COVID-19 facility to treat infected police personnel, officials said.The move came in the wake of over 20 police personnel testing positive for the virus in the city so far.An official told that the lieutenant governor has also directed setting up an exclusive testing centre for the Delhi police personnel, besides providing personal protective equipment to those who are on COVID-19 duty."There is a plan to set up a dedicated COVID-19 testing centre for police personnel at Shahdara Police Station, but a final decision is yet to be taken," a source said.According to a senior police official, the Delhi Police's strength is about 82,000 personnel.Meanwhile, Chief Secretary Vijay Dev has directed officials to take strict action against landlords asking migrants workers and students to pay rent amid the coronavirus-triggered lockdown. In the order issued on April 22, Dev said all district magistrates will run awareness campaigns in their respective areas, advising "affected persons" to lodge police complaints against such errant landlords".It stated that the Delhi government had issued an order on March 29, according to which, landlords have been asked not to demand rent for a period of one month from workers and migrants. The March 29 order had also stated that if any landlord forces labourers and students to vacate their premises, they would be liable for action under the Disaster Management Act.Passengers using the Delhi Metro, post resumption of operations, will have to take metallic items off their body before frisking, use face masks, have the 'Aarogya Setu' app, but those with flu-like symptoms won't be allowed, as per a proposal prepared by the CISF. Kathua/Doda/Jammu, Apr 11 () Setting an example, about 2,500 residents of a panchayat in Kathua district Saturday decided to skip their one meal everyday to feed the hungry as the coronavirus lockdown has snatched livelihoods of many and left them without food, despite best government efforts. Sarpanch Shiv Dev Singh of Panchayat Baira-Buorthian said a resolution to this effect was passed by the Panchayat, which has a population of over 2,500, at a special meeting "The 2500 residents implemented it immediately," he told , raising the slogan "save food - save the nation". "It is a token contribution from our panchayat in the country's fight against coronavirus." Jammu and Kashmir was put under complete lockdown on March 22, two days ahead of the 21-day nationwide shutdown announced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to combat the spread of novel coronavirus. A total of 207 people - 168 in Kashmir and 39 in Jammu - have tested positive in the Union Territory, out of whom four have died, three in the Valley and one in Jammu. After the lockdown was announced, migrant labourers working in J&amp;K got stranded with no work. Also, local daily wage-earners lost their livelihoods as all commercial activities and labour work came to a halt. Although the government has taken various steps to reach out to the affected people, complaints about underprivileged sections running out of ration and money have been coming from different parts of Jammu region. Police and other security agencies including Army and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have also come forward joining hands with NGOs, social and political outfits and even individuals to ensure "no one sleeps hungry". Reports from Doda said the tribal population in the remote areas of Chenab valley district are facing a very adverse situation. Sarpanch Shiv Dev Singh urged other panchayats to follow suit to ensure such people get help. He said his panchayat will identify the needy people and would reach out to them to ensure that they survive this lockdown with "honour and dignity". Social activist Sukesh Khajuria, a resident of Jammu, welcomed people showering flower petals on those on the forefront of the battle against coronavirus but said "we need much more than tokenism". "The stark reality is that many people are running short of food and money due to the ongoing lockdown and we need to strengthen the efforts of the government to reach out to such people," he said. Reports from Doda said the tribal population living in the remote hilly slopes of the Chenab valley district are facing a very adverse situation. The Gujjar tribe traditionally resides in small hamlets near high-altitude meadows far away from the populated areas and treks downhill to the villages and towns with their produce (milk) and labour work to earn their daily income. "I have not earned a penny for the last 15 days, as the work has come to a standstill. We are without money and left with no essentials as a result of which my four children and elderly parents are starving for the past two days," said Mohammad Salim Gujjar of Alan-Sharekhi village, hoping some government help would come sooon. Hundreds of Gujjar families reside on the slopes in small hamlets like Alan-Sharekhi, Dooru-Sartingal, Kota Top, Darie, Ladoo, Rajpura, Kilroo and Ghil-kanaan near high altitude meadows Padri, Qatari, Kainthi, Gildhar, Sarola, Kilroodhar, Guldanda and Bhal-Padri of the hilly district. The families of many local labourers who are stranded in neighbouring states including Punjab and Himachal Pradesh are also looking towards the government for assistance to overcome the crisis. "I have been borrowing money to survive as my husband has got stranded at Shimla due to lockdown. We want the government to at least help us get back our bread-earners ," said Gulshana, the wife of stranded labourer Abdul Gani Additional Deputy Commissioner, Bhadarwah, Rakesh Kumar, when contacted, assured necessary help would be made available to the tribal population. "We have got enough stock of foodgrains with us. We will immediately send a team to these hamlets and ensure delivery of ration to them at the earliest," he said. Reports from Samba district said over 150 families of village Dunai in Sumb block are without food as the local residents have no money left with them. "We heard the government is providing three months free ration to the poor but no one had come to us so far. We were working in the unorganised sector and earned our wages daily. We have no money to feed our families," said Babu Ram, a local resident, fearing starvation in case the help does not reach them. The district administration in Jammu distributed free ration among over 400 stranded labourers who are living in a slum near Jammu railway station. The workers, most of whom earn a living by handling goods at the railway station, had complained of starvation due to the lockdown. The government distributed ration kits containing five kg Atta, mustard oil and other items among the workers on Friday, officials said. Police had also come to the rescue of over 40 families consisting of 160 people in Akhnoor sector in the outskirts of Jammu as part of its "we care for you" campaign. Police acted after receiving a call from the stranded labourers from Bihar and Haryana that they are running out of ration, an official said, adding ration kits were distributed among the labourers with voluntary contribution from Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel.
