Country's federal counter-terrorist commando force <keyword id="6409838" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-security-guard">National Security Guard</keyword> (NSG) reported its first coronavirus linked death on Wednesday when a senior commander succumbed to the infection, officials said. <keyword id="877139" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Group-commander">Group Commander</keyword> (coordination) B K Jha was admitted to the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) Hospital in Greater Noida after he contracted COVID-19 and breathed his last early morning, they said. This is the first death from coronavirus in the NSG. The officer was working with one of the adminstrative units of the force and was not in the combat wing, they added. He was 53. Jha, originally a 1993-batch officer of the <keyword id="40481" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSF">BSF</keyword> cadre, hailed from Bihar. The officer joined the NSG on deputation from the <keyword id="109513" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Border-security-force">Border Security Force</keyword> in 2018. He had earlier served as the principal staff officer and commandant to the BSF director general. Both the forces that function under the command of the <keyword id="65242" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-home-ministry">Union Home Ministry</keyword> condoled his death on their respective Twitter handles. "DG and all ranks of NSG mourn his death and remember his distinguished service to the Nation. May Almighty rest his noble soul in eternal peace and give strength to his family to bear the loss," the NSG said in its Twitter message. The BSF said it stands by the family of the officer in these trying times. The NSG, as per <keyword id="549893" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="official-data">official data</keyword> updated till Monday, has had over 430 COVID-19 infection cases till now, out of which only about 59 are active. The 'black cats' commando force was raised in 1984 as a federal contingency special force and its primary task includes undertaking specific counter-terrorist, counter-hijack operations and rendering VVIP protection duties. The CAPFs like the <keyword id="6354354" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="crpf">CRPF</keyword>, BSF, ITBP, <keyword id="6370623" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="cisf">CISF</keyword> and SSB and two other forces under the Union Home Ministry, NSG and NDRF, had over 66,000 COVID-19 cases among them, out of which over 7,900 are active, as per the data. Through its in-house mobile app 'Pension Corner', the <keyword id="6370623" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="cisf">CISF</keyword> will, from Friday, be in touch with all its retired personnel to cater to their needs. With the help of this new digital initiative, pensioners will get connected to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) units spread across the country, and receive invitations, over SMS, on important occasions in the nearest unit. Apart from an inbuilt grievance redressal mechanism, all important circulars like job opportunities and benefits pertaining to pensioners can also be accessed using this Android app. The digital platform undoubtedly not only motivates and increases the self-esteem of such personnel, who devoted their life in guarding the nation's assets even at the remotest location of the country, but will also boost their morale and provide them support at a time when they are needed to be cared for, the CISF said. The new initiative was launched on Friday under the guidance of CISF Director General Rajesh Ranjan by creating the app to get in touch with the pensioners and to bring them on to the digital platform, which will offer 'a one-stop solution'. 'Pensioners Corner' will be available in both web and Android platforms with the facility for pensioners to access their data on the move, said the CISF -- the over 1.60 lakh strong Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) which is responsible for providing security to almost 60 airports across the country, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), various government buildings and many more strategic locations. In a statement, the CISF said it always considers its retired personnel to be a "cynosure" of the organisation. To tackle the unforeseen Covid-19 situation and ensure the continuity of the functions in its offices, the CISF had also recently launched web application "e-Karyalay", which digitally replicates traditional file movement. To handle various security-related concerns and to pace with the existing standards, it has embodied the digital signature feature. This application has been hosted at the CISF cloud having all security arrangements in place to safeguard the data. Further, a data recovery site has also been established to maintain round the clock services of e-Karyalay. With CISF establishments spread across the country, the journey to a completely paperless office was not easy but the CISF took up the big challenge of replacing the five-decade-old system prevalent in the force. Movement of files between offices has been replaced by the digital movement of files and delay in file processing has also been reduced as physical presence in the office for this. It has proven to be a blessing for officers having charge of multiple offices who earlier used to travel from one office to another for signing files. On a national level also, frequent movement of personnel for movement of files, service books and other official documents have been curbed, leading to immense savings in the TA/DA expenditure, a CISF official said on condition of anonymity. This "Green Initiative" by the CISF has also saved a substantial amount of government money to the tune of almost Rs 1 crore, said the CISF. It said that the cost of making the requisite app was found on the higher side and involving lengthy time on a market survey, and the "challenge was undertaken by the tech branch of the force headquarters to make the app in-house to save the cost and time. The force has taken e-governance to the last man in the field and has furthered the vision of digital India".

New Delhi, Feb 5 () The CISF has taken over the security of a Uttar Pradesh-based supercritical thermal power plant and has deployed over 300 personnel at the facility, a senior official said on Wednesday.The induction of an armed security unit of the force and a separate fire wing took place on Monday at the Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Ltd (NUPPL) located at Ghatampur in Kanpur."310 personnel -- 206 for security duties and 104 as part of the fire wing -- have been deployed at the power plant. The induction took place on February 3," a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) spokesperson said.NUPPL is a joint venture between the Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Ltd (a Union government enterprise) and the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd. It is a coal-based supercritical thermal power plant with a capacity of 1,980 MW."In the light of the increased threat perception to coal-based supercritical thermal power plants situated across the country, NUPPL is inherently vulnerable to threats from anti-nationals," the spokesperson said.The ceremonial induction of the contingent was done by CISF Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Prabodh Chandra and NUPPL CEO K Mohan Reddy.The CISF commandos, under the command of a Deputy Commandant-rank officer, will provide round-the-clock security in a quick response team (QRT) pattern as part of which they will keep vigil from vantage positions at the facility, using sophisticated assault weapons and will have vehicles for swift movement.They will ensure that terror threats to the power plant are kept at bay and thwarted, a senior official said.The special fire unit will secure the facility against any blaze-like incidents.The paramilitary force, with a strength of around 1.62 lakh personnel, is the primary federal force to provide armed security cover to vital installations in the government and private domain of the country, apart from being the national civil aviation protection force.With the latest induction, the force has 347 units to guard in the country, the spokesperson said. New Delhi, Feb 12 () The CISF seized Rs 45 lakh worth of foreign currency hidden in cooked meat pieces, peanuts and biscuit packets from a passenger at the Delhi airport, officials said on Wednesday.The unique modus operandi of currency smuggling came to light on Tuesday evening when security personnel intercepted Murad Ali on the basis of his "suspicious" behaviour when he reached Terminal-3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport to board an Air India flight to Dubai."On physical checking of the passengers' baggage, high volume of foreign currencies were found concealed in cooked mutton pieces, peanuts, biscuit packets and other eatables," CISF spokesperson Assistant Inspector General Hemendra Singh said."This is a unique and peculiar way of concealing foreign currency for smuggling," Singh said.A video of the interception provided by the force showed the security personnel cracking peanuts, unzipping sealed biscuit packets and digging into oily meat pieces to extract an assortment of Saudi Riyal, Qatari Riyal, Kuwaiti Dinar, Omani Riyal and Euro rolled and wrapped neatly inside.The estimated worth of this seized cache is Rs 45 lakh and the passenger and the currencies have been handed over to Customs authorities for investigation, the CISF spokesperson said.The Central Industrial Security Force guards the Delhi airport.
