The team, consisting of 40 students, has earned its place in the international event because of the self-propelled, autonomous hyperloop pod developed by it.<br /><br /><br />Mentored by the Centre For Innovation (<keyword id="257398" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="CFI">CFI</keyword>), <keyword id="6356755" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-madras">IIT Madras</keyword>, Team <keyword id="4121004" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Avishkar">Avishkar</keyword> was the only team from Asia to qualify for the finals of the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition 2019, a global contest organised by Elon <keyword id="364027" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Musk">Musk</keyword>'s aerospace company SpaceX. It was Musk who had proposed the idea of a hyperloop in his 2013 white paper on 'Hyperloop Alpha'.<br /><br /><br />Out of more than 1,600 teams participating in this prestigious cutting-edge event, Team Avishkar was among the Top 21.<br /><br /><br />Hyperloop offers a new revolutionary mode of transportation -- a high-speed train that travels in a near-vacuum tube.<br /><br /><br />The reduced air resistance allows the capsule inside the tube to reach speeds of more than 1,000 km/h, thereby dramatically reducing travel time across medium-range distances.<br /><br /><br />Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and the lockdowns, the 40 students of Team Avishkar collaborated with each other on the development of the Hyperloop pod from their homes. They completely revamped the pod's sub-systems with scalable and efficient technologies. In the past few months, they manufactured a Hyperloop Pod prototype and tested the novel technology.<br /><br /><br />"Our research has yielded technological breakthroughs such as the linear induction motor for propulsion, a proprietary levitation technology, and contactless magnetic braking system," said Neel Balar, Team Avishkar lead and third-year student at the IIT's Department of Engineering Design. "Looking beyond the pod, the team is also focusing efforts on the design of the Hyperloop's infrastructure," he added.<br /><br /><br />Explaining the importance of the infrastructure, such as tubes and pylons, Kishan Thakkar, fourth-year student at the IIT's Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, said it takes up about 70 per cent of a Hyperloop corridor's budget.<br /><br /><br />"Our research is focused mainly on reducing the cost of this infrastructure and adapting the Hyperloop to the needs of the Indian sub-continent," Thakkar said in a statement. "The team is truly pushing the frontiers of this technology to create a sustainable future," he added.<br /><br /><br />Hyperloop has been a buzzword in India for the past few years. Several companies have proposed routes such as Mumbai-Pune and Chandigarh-Amritsar. After an initial study, Team Avishkar is working on a detailed study of energy needs, costs, demand and other aspects of a business model for a Hyperloop corridor between Bangalore and Chennai to assess the economic feasibility of the idea in India.<br /><br /><br />Team Avishkar estimates that the travel time between Bangalore and Chennai can be reduced to just 30 minutes, compared with the six hours it takes today by car or train.<br /><br /><br />Deloitte India has provided support to the team's efforts to make its mark at the European Hyperloop Week, which will be held in Valencia, Spain, from July 19 to 25. IIT Madras' Avishkar team qualifies for the European Hyperloop Week competition

Airline passengers should brace themselves for a fare increase, as the government is likely to raise the passenger services fee (PSF) by at least 38% to meet the cost of security at Indian <keyword id="43661" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="airports">airports</keyword>. The government, which earlier had plans to not raise PSF and transfer the cost to consolidated fund of India (<keyword id="257398" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="CFI">CFI</keyword>), will now have to raise it, after the <keyword id="47209" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Finance-Ministry">finance ministry</keyword> declined to fund the deficit. <br /><br />According to reports, the finance ministry has agreed to transfer the cost to CFI but only if it is revenue-neutral for them, which would mean we will have to raise PSF. We estimate that the raise could be in the range of Rs 50 per ticket, which would not just help bridge the annual fund gap but also the deficit accumulated over the years. <br /><br />A PSF of Rs 130 is charged on every ticket booked and the fund accumulated from the levy is used to fund security cost at airports, primarily to pay salaries of the <keyword id="6370623" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="CISF">CISF</keyword> personnel manning the airports, primarily to pay salaries of the CISF personnel manning the airports. <br /><br />The aviation ministry was of the view that any increase in rates would burden passengers and wanted the finance ministry to shift the cost of security at airports to the consolidated fund of India. Once the cost head is moved to the consolidated fund, the government would finance the deficit directly. However, the finance ministry has refused to fund any deficit. <br />

By Philem Dipak Singh <p> New Delhi, Apr 26 () Not all of them are impacted as they depend solely on the government to run the show, but some National Sports Federations have begun to feel the pinch of reduced corporate funding due to the COVID-19 pandemic.</p><p> Except for the BCCI, all national sports bodies get funds from the ministry under the Scheme of Assistance to National Sports Federations. The budge set aside for them this year is an accumulated Rs 245 crore.</p><p> It covers almost everything -- athletes' training and equipment needs, participation in international tournaments, exposure trips abroad, and hosting of national and international events in the country.</p><p> Every year, the NSFs have to submit their Annual Calendar for Training and Competitions (ACTC) proposals to get their share from this fund.</p><p> But, a lot of NSFs are not solely relying on the government. To host additional events and organise tournaments on a bigger scale or to spend on other heads, they are open to private sector funding.</p><p> The government has even made provisions to enable corporate houses to spend money from their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds for sports activities.</p><p> Cycling Federation of India (CFI) and Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) are among the sports bodies which are expecting reduction in assistance from the CSR funds. The Athletics Federation of India and the Indian Weightlifting Federation, however, said they will not be impacted at all.</p><p> "Certainly, there is going to be reduction in CSR fund component which we get from the private sector due to this coronavirus outbreak. The private sector is hit hard and it will have an impact on corporate funding in sports," CFI Chairman Onkar Singh told .</p><p> He said the CFI has been receiving funds from Honda Motors in the last few years, which add up to more than Rs 1 crore annually.</p><p> "We submitted project proposal for this year in February but they (Honda Motors) are yet to approve it," Singh said.</p><p> The COVID-19 pandemic has forced postponement of sports events scheduled in the next few months but international federations are hoping to restart sometime in the second half of the year.</p><p> CFI's most prestigious international event is the Track Asia Cup -- approved by world body UCI -- which usually happens in New Delhi in September-October, and Singh said the continental tournament is still on at this moment.</p><p> "...we will know more about this event depending on how this pandemic unfolds. All the international events have been postponed as of now and UCI will take a decision in June on the future course of action," Singh said.</p><p> PCI Secretary General Gursharan Singh also said the COVID-19 pandemic will have impact on its financial well being.</p><p> "Yes, there will definitely be reduction of CSR funding to PCI in current financial year due to severe economic slowdown. As most of the corporate houses have already exhausted their CSR funds due to their generous contribution to the PM CARES fund, the contribution to sports bodies will not be a priority," he said.</p><p> "PCI has already chalked out its financial plan for the year 2020-21 very meticulously since Tokyo Paralympic Games are now to be held in 2021 and therefore we hope to sail through," he added.</p><p> PCI gets funds from Citibank Global (through a tripartite arrangement with world body IPC) and Hero Motors. New Delhi, Feb 9 () The Centre will soon release another Rs 35,000 crore to states to compensate for the revenue loss on account of GST rollout, an official said.<p>Under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) law, states are guaranteed compensation for revenue loss for 5 years if their revenue does not increase 14 per cent on the base year of 2015-16.</p><p>There were no differences between the Centre and states with regard to compensation payment in 2017-18, 2018-19, and in the first four months of the current fiscal. </p><p>However, with revenue mop-up from compensation cess falling inadequate, the Centre held back fund transfer to states for revenue shortage beginning August.</p><p>Following this, states raised the issue with the Centre and in December 2019, Rs 35,298 crore was released as compensation for August-September.</p><p>"We will soon transfer another Rs 35,000 crore from the consolidated fund of India (CFI) to compensation cess fund in 2 instalments. The first tranche will be compensation for October-November," an official told .</p><p>The excess collection from compensation cess in 2017-18 and 2018-19 was deposited in the CFI earlier and this will now be transferred back to the compensation fund, the official added.    </p><p>Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Budget speech said it is decided to transfer to the GST Compensation Fund balances in two instalments. </p><p>Under the GST structure, taxes are levied under 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent slabs. On top of the highest tax slab, a cess is levied on luxury, sin and demerit goods and the proceeds from the same is used to compensate states for any revenue loss.</p><p>The Centre has so far released about Rs 2.11 lakh crore as GST compensation to states since the implementation of GST on July 1, 2017.</p><p>During July 2017-March 2018 Rs 48,785 crore was released, while between April 2018-March 2019, Rs 81,141 crore was paid to states. For April-May and June -July last year, Rs 17,789 crore and Rs 27,956 crore were released. Further, Rs 35,298 crore was paid to states as compensation for August-September 2019.</p><p>In an interview to , Revenue Secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey had said revenues from GST will have to increase in order to resolve the issue of compensation payment to states.</p><p>"Revenue will have to increase and for that only we are looking at rate rationalisation, addressing issue of inverted duty structure and increasing compliance. This will ensure that requirement of compensation is less," Pandey said. </p>He further said the government is looking at monthly average GST collection of over Rs 1 lakh crore.   JD RVK ANUANU

He's been teaching and flying <keyword id="6367788" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="planes">planes</keyword> around the US for 17 years.</li><li>Despite the ongoing pandemic, business for All In Aviation has boomed this year, and May has nearly doubled his staff of flight instructors since April.</li><li>He typically sees several clients a day for three- to four-hour flight lessons on planes that cost anywhere from $215 to $1,000 to rent per hour.</li><li>Here's what his job is like, as told to freelance writer Amber Gibson.</li></ul><p>Ever since I was a kid, I knew I wanted to be a <keyword id="6356223" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pilot">pilot</keyword>. I would look up in the sky all the time, and was obsessed with trying to see airplanes.</p><p>I knew I wanted to go to college for aviation, so after high school I did two years in Arizona at a satellite school. In that time, I obtained my private pilot's license with instrument rating and my commercial license. Then I got my Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) and Certified Flight Instructor — Instrument (CFII) ratings, and went to the University of North Dakota to finish my bachelor's degree in commercial aviation.</p><p>I originally thought I would go into the <keyword id="44023" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="airlines">airlines</keyword>, and wanted to know everything there was to know about the commercial airline industry.</p><h2><strong>You don't need a college degree to become a flight instructor</strong>.</h2><p>First you need to have a commercial license, which requires 250 flight hours. Then you can train for your CFI and CFII to be able to teach others. Most people are flight instructors so they can make money while building up their flight time to become a commercial airline pilot, which requires 1,500 flight hours.</p><p>After graduating in 2007, I spent nearly 13 years in Scottsdale teaching and running flight schools. More recently, I worked with the Scottsdale Cirrus training center.</p><p>In 2019, I decided it was time for a change, and I took a position with All In Aviation school in Las Vegas. Our out-of-town traffic dropped off to practically zero overnight, so I began working from home on our ground school — a three-day crash course for new students. </p><p>It was a little slow for a couple weeks, but suddenly in April, people were coming out of the woodwork wanting to learn to fly. I was constantly having meetings and phone calls with people who wanted to learn to fly, so I started hiring more and more instructors.</p><div type="image" title="carl may 2" height="1836" width="2448" msid="79235246" hostid="261"></div><p>Now, we have a total of eight flight instructors, three of whom I hired and trained during the pandemic. We kept chugging along and were blown away by the amount of business we had.</p><p>Our flight instructors have all been billing an average of 120-140 hours a month. In September, our flights hours were double of what they were in January.</p><h2><strong>As a flight instructor, my schedule changes every day.</strong></h2><p>Most training occurs during daylight hours so it's not uncommon to have early mornings, especially in the summer when the temperature is up. Most lessons are blocked out for three to four hours. We have a preflight discussion before we board the plane, then the training flight lasts anywhere from one to two hours, and is concluded with a thorough post flight briefing. </p><p>I typically see two to three clients per day depending on the length of the lesson. As a full-time instructor, I make myself available seven days per week and take time off as needed. I'm typically at the office Monday through Friday, and sometimes still find myself flying on the weekends to accommodate student schedules. Some students need night flight time so I just adjust my days to start and end later.  </p><p>Our students range from teens to people in their 50s, but during the pandemic there's been an uptick in older clients, between the ages of 35 and 55. He took his private pilot check-ride on his 50th birthday, and then a week later he flew to Cirrus aircraft headquarters in Tennessee to pick up his brand new turbo Cirrus airplane. He's going to put the airplane on lease back with us, and that'll be a new addition to our fleet. Including the VisionJet, we have 10 Cirrus aircraft and two Cessnas for 12 planes total. </p><p>I have another fun customer in his early 40s who owns his own business, and wants to learn to fly and own a Cirrus VisionJet. We've been all over the country with him, incorporating his flight training with his business operations. I did a flight with him and his wife where we stayed the night in Sedona, Arizona, and I had a $900 a night cabin to myself. When you aren't a pilot yet, unfortunately we can't just drop you off somewhere and then come back and get you. That would be a charter operation and we aren't certified to do that as a flight school. </p><p>We added several Cessnas to the flight school fleet that rent at $215/hour to accommodate more price-conscious folks. Still, many of our customers end up gravitating to the Cirrus planes, which range from about $300 to $400/hour, for all their safety features. A lot of people see the VisionJet, which costs $1,000/hour to rent, and that's their end goal. It has a button called safe return that turns the aircraft into an autonomous vehicle in the event that the pilot has a medical emergency. </p><p>It's been steady but intense growth over the past year. Traditionally summer months are slow months for flight training because it's so hot here, but all of our aircraft are fully air-conditioned, so that definitely helps. </p><h2><strong>The best part of flying and being an instructor is helping my students achieve their goals in aviation.</strong></h2><p>Every day and lesson is different, and I enjoy creating personal relationships with trust and respect. Most flight instructors teach for a short time as a means to the airlines, so my advice for other pilots and instructors is to practice patience and enjoy the process. Remember to live in the present, and respect everyone you meet. It's a small industry, and you never know when you may cross paths with someone again.</p>

Its new market for bitcoin futures is expected to add more liquidity to the market after last Sunday's launch of future's trading on Cboe.</p><p>"This market should see way bigger volumes. CME is a way bigger player in futures than Cboe," John Spallanzani, chief macro strategist at CFI Group, told Business Insider.</p><p>Once CME futures trading commenced, the value of spot bitcoin on the composite index provided by cryptocurrency watcher CoinDesk was initially little-changed at a value of around $19,260.</p><p>Since then, prices have declined, and at last check bitcoin was trading at $18,230.92.</p><p>Garrett See, the CEO of cryptocurrency trading firm DV Chain, told Business Insider that early volumes were similar to those seen on the Cboe exchange last week.</p><p>"The order book is thin. Bitcoin falls after CME Group launches bitcoin futures

And by 6:36 a.m. ET Wednesday, the scorching-hot cryptocurrency was trading up 8.87% against the US dollar at $12,768 a coin.</p><p>John Spallanzani, chief macro strategist at CFI Group, told Business Insider trading activity in Asia was the catalyst for the impressive tear.</p><p>"Bitcoin continues to have a strong bid during Asia trading as emerging market currencies are being sold to buy, pushing us above another milestone," Spallanzani said in a Twitter direct message soon after bitcoin broke $12,000.</p><p>The new high Wednesday morning is ahead of the launch of new bitcoin futures contracts by two major US exchanges. Cboe Global Markets, the Chicago-based options and derivatives exchange, is rolling out its bitcoin futures product Sunday. Rival CME Group is launching later in December. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-futures-cme-terms-2017-11">Bitcoin futures</a>, which will allow investors to bet on the future price of the digital coin, is the latest in the eight-year-old coin's maturation.</p><p>Futures could help dampen the coin's spine-tingling price swings, according to Craig Pirrong, a business professor at the University of Houston.</p><p>"Having this instrument that makes it easier to short might keep the bitcoin price a little closer to reality," he told  <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2017-12-06/bitcoin-bears-are-excited-about-futures">Bloomberg's Matt Levine</a>.</p><p>As for how much room bitcoin has to run, some clients of investment bank Goldman Sachs appear bullish. Bitcoin tops $12,000 for the first time and is gunning for $13,000

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59b9437f38d20d41188b51d0-769/screen shot 2017-09-13 at 103529 am.png" alt="Screen Shot 2017 09 13 at 10.35.29 AM" data-mce-source="MI" /><p class="source"><span>MI</span></p><p class="caption">The cryptocurrency was down over 9% Wednesday morning at $3,767 per coin.</p></div><p></p></div></div><a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/BTC-USD">Bitcoin</a> continues to slide Wednesday as uncertainty and criticism against the red-hot cryptocurrency mount. </p><p>The cryptocurrency was <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/btc-usd">down over 9%</a> Wednesday morning at $3,767 a coin, just eleven days after crossing the much-anticipated $5,000 threshold. </p><p>Bitcoin has fallen more than 11% since <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-price-worse-than-tulip-bulbs-2017-9">Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan, bashed the cryptocurrency</a>. </p><p>On Tuesday, the 61-year-old banker said at the Barclays Financial Services Conference that bitcoin was "a fraud" that would eventually blow up. Dimon, a long-time critic of bitcoin, once called it "a terrible store of value" <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jp-morgans-jamie-dimon-on-bitcoin-2014-1">in 2014 during an interview with CNBC</a>. </p><p>John Spallanzani, chief macro strategist at CFI Group, tells Business Insider that Dimon's remarks, however, aren't the only reason bitcoin is under pressure this morning. </p><p><span>"The negative news cycle continues, the </span><span>UK regulator FCA has sounded the alarm over initial coin offerings, and the China crack down," he said in an email to Business Insider. </span></p><p>On Tuesday, the UK's financial watchdog, the Financial Conduct Authority, <a href="https://www.fca.org.uk/news/statements/initial-coin-offerings">warned investors about the risk associated with initial coin offerings</a>, the cryptocurrency-based fundraising method. Over $2.1 billion have been raised via the method since the beginning of the year, according to Autonomous NEXT, the financial technology analytics provider. Some companies have raised millions of dollars in a matter of hours without having an actual product. Here's the FCA (emphasis ours):</p><blockquote><p>"<strong>ICOs are very high-risk, speculative investments.</strong> You should be conscious of the risks involved (highlighted below) and fully research the specific project if you are thinking about buying digital tokens. You should only invest in an ICO project if you are an experienced investor, confident in the quality of the ICO project itself (e.g. business plan, technology, people involved) and prepared to lose your entire stake."</p></blockquote><p>Earlier this month, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-price-ethereum-after-china-ico-ban">China announced it was banning initial coin offerings</a>. And more recently, rumors have escalated that China might ban cryptocurrency trading altogether. A<span> Caixin report out September 8 suggested the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-price-sinking-report-to-shut-down-exchanges-2017-9">China will shut down domestic cryptocurrency exchanges</a>. </span></p><p><span>Two of China's largest bitcoin exchanges, Okcoin and Huobi, say they haven't received any such notices, according to a </span><a href="https://twitter.com/luluyilun/status/906163511658557440">tweet from Bloomberg's Lulu Yilun Chen</a><span>. </span></p><p><span>In February, </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-price-is-getting-close-to-its-all-time-high-2017-6">China blocked customers from withdrawing their bitcoin</a><span>. Traders anticipate a start to this Jobs Week, as Rosh Hashanah - coupled with Holidays in Asia and in Germany - [thins] trading desks globally. It's a mixed bag in Europe, with the DAX closed, but EU Fins leading to the downside, off 40bp as there is No DB Deal Yet (ADR is down 2% here). Energy shares are among the leaders across the continent, while the FTSE is Leaping 1.2% as the Pound Drops on Article 50 headers. Spain and Italy are seeing weakness as their Banks fall, but Volumes across Euro exchanges is all 30-50% light to normal. In Asia, Nikkei up nearly 1% higher as Banks and Autos rallied - Aussie closed up 80bp as the Big Banks rallied and BHP jumped nearly 2% - Hong Kong closed 1.2% higher - Macau +2.3% as September GGR was better - while South Korean and Malaysian markets were shut for holidays Monday, while Chinese markets were shut for the weeklong "Golden Week". </p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">We continue to see hawkish moves in Bunds and Treasuries, with both yields getting upside of Friday's peaks right now. Strong Global PMI data rolling through, coupled with Oil higher, seems to be the main drivers of flows. The $ is holding a bid as it makes gains against Euro and Yen - but the "Brexit start date" headers have the pound nearing 30+Y lows against the $. Base Metals are under some pressure as the $ falls and Asian Buyers go on vacation - but interesting Gold holding a bid despite the stronger $. Oil continues to squeeze, with WTI adding 1% as BP shuts a North Sea Platform and Matthew rocks the Caribbean. </p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Ahead of us today, we get Total Vehicle Sales for September (est. 17.45m), along with the launch of the Tick Pilot program to widen spreads back towards 5c increments (Test Group 1: JAKK, ISCA, FET, CFI, SGA / Group 2: GBT, TTS, HUBS, RATE, ERN). At 9:45 we get Markit US Manufacturing PMI, just before the "Official" release of ISM Manufacturing at 10. At Noon, ECB's Mersch Speaks in Luxembourg - and at 3pm Fed's Loretta Mester does a Bloomberg TV interview. <p class="p1"><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>CUSTOMERS WANT OMNICHANNEL: </strong></strong>Results from a recent survey indicate that online shoppers want the option to also purchase from a retailer in-store. Ninety-five percent of consumers said they "frequently or occasionally shop" a retailer's website <em>and</em> store. More than three-fourths of respondents also said that they consider it "important" to be able to pick up online purchases in-store. The survey results are further evidence that consumers want flexibility of being able to buy the same items offline and online. <p class="p1"><strong>UPS PACKAGE DELIVERY VOLUME PICKS UP: </strong>The United Parcel Service saw daily volume of U.S. packages shipped increase 4.2% year-over-year in the first quarter, indicating that shopping is on the rise as well. UPS acknowledged that poor weather was still a factor - interrupting normal service during more than half of the days in the first quarter. The shipping service said it's investing $100 million in technology and services this year so that it can better handle peak shipping periods throughout the year. <p class="p3"><strong>Grocery e-commerce company Blue Apron has raised $50 million at a $450 million valuation. </strong>The company announced last month that it is now serving 500,000 meals per month to subscribers. <p class="p3"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>FLIPKART EXPANDS SAME-DAY DELIVERY: </strong><span>Indian e-commerce company Flipkart now supports same-day delivery across all merchandise categories in 10 cities. The company is also piloting a "try and buy" program for men's and women's clothing. Flipkart announced last month that it reached $1 billion in annual sales, establishing itself as a market leader in the region. Offering same-day delivery for such a large customer base will likely make it even more difficult for Amazon and eBay to expand their businesses in India, as they've already had trouble doing so to-date. (</span><a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/internet/flipkart-to-offer-same-day-delivery-amid-rising-e-commerce-battle/articleshow/34305269.cms">Economic Times</a><span>)</span></span></p>
<p class="p5"><strong>PAYPAL AND QIKSERVE PARTNER FOR RESTAURANT ORDERING:</strong><span> UK-based Qikserve announced that its mobile ordering app can now be integrated into the PayPal app to allow customers to make PayPal payments at restaurants and other hospitality businesses, according to a </span><a href="http://www.qikserve.com/index.php/qikserve-now-integrated-with-paypal/">blog post</a><span> from the company. "Nobody likes queuing for a drink at the pub or waiting for the bill to arrive - especially when it's crowded. Our collaboration with QikServe ... can reduce customer waiting times and enhance their overall experience ... simply by using their smartphones," says Rob Harper, head of retail services at PayPal UK.  </span><a href="https://intelligence.businessinsider.com/restaurants-adoption-of-mobile-technology-could-spell-the-end-of-payments-terminals-2014-4" target="_blank">In a recent chart</a><span> we showed that restaurants are quickly adopting mobile technology and that apps like Qikserve could eventually eventually reduce the need for legacy payment terminals.</span></p>
<p class="p5"><strong>QUOTE OF THE DAY - </strong><span>Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz speaking about the company's success with mobile payments during the company's earnings call last week: "We've been approached by tech companies and national retailers as to whether or not we would consider licensing or white-labeling the Starbucks' mobile platform. Most of the national retailers did not invest ahead of the growth curve. They do not have the capability in-house at this point to really execute this and to fully understand it. Tech companies themselves obviously have the tech background [but] they do not have the interface on the physical side with the consumer to execute it. So we are in a very unique position having kind of solved, [the] chicken and egg problem of both, the digital technology and obviously the interface with the consumer." </span></p>
<p><strong>CORRECTION ON PAYPAL'S 'WEARABLE WALLET':</strong> PayPal is using the coffee shop located on its corporate campus as a test environment for a new payment method that uses beacons and wearable devices. The beacon detects when a customer enters the store, sending a push notification to the person's device (PayPal is only using Samsung devices for the test). The customer is then checked in and can tap their smartwatch to buy their coffee or redeem an offer. PayPal says it's a natural progression in <a href="https://intelligence.businessinsider.com/beacons-revolutionary-mobile-technology-2013-12" target="_blank">beacon</a>-enabled payments.</p>
<p>A post from PayPal President David Marcus said the campus coffee shop where the new technology was being tested was a Starbucks, which created confusion over whether Starbucks might have been involved in PayPal's wearable wallet initiative. Last week E-commerce Insider reported erroneously that Starbucks was involved in the pilot. We reached out to PayPal and a spokesman confirmed there is no partnership, and that the on-campus coffee shop just happens to sell Starbucks-brand coffee. PayPal also edited <a href="https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/PayPal-Forward/Three-Trends-That-Might-Transform-the-Retail-Payments-Experience/ba-p/800878" target="_blank">the blog post</a>. We regret the error. </p>
