Former <keyword id="6357150" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tcs" source="Orion">TCS</keyword> CEO Rajesh <keyword id="221979" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gopinathan" source="Orion">Gopinathan</keyword>'s overall remuneration jumped 13.17 per cent to Rs 29.16 crore in FY23, his last year as the chief executive of the largest IT services player. In the annual report for the fiscal year 2022-23, TCS said Gopinathan earned over Rs 25 crore as commission, a salary of Rs 1.73 crore and Rs 2.43 crore in other benefits. Gopinathan, who helmed the company for six years till May 31, had earned a salary Rs 25.76 crore FY22. Despite heading the largest company, Gopinathan's pay cheque is lower compared to peers and also lower than what his predecessor <keyword id="97017" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="n-chandrasekaran" source="Orion">N Chandrasekaran</keyword> drew in FY17 before being appointed as the Tata Sons Chairman. On his elevation to the CEO's seat from being a chief financial officer, Gopinathan drew Rs 6.22 crore in FY17 which doubled to Rs 12.5 crore in FY18 and had been steadily rising since but for a blip in FY20. Gopinathan has committed to help TCS in the leadership transition by being available till September, and is yet to reveal his future plans. K <keyword id="16817833" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="krithivasan" source="Orion">Krithivasan</keyword>, Gopinathan's successor, will be getting a basic salary of Rs 10 lakh per month which can go up to Rs 16 lakh, commission as decided by the board and other benefits like rent-free residential accommodation. The company's chief operating officer N G Subramaniam earned a total remuneration of Rs 23.60 crore for FY23, up from about Rs 20 crore in FY22. The annual report said the increase in managerial remuneration is at 13.58 per cent as against the median hike of 5.11 per cent across its 6.14 lakh permanent employees. Chandrasekaran thanked Gopinathan and also wished the best for Krithivasan in his note, and said TCS is significantly investing in building AI capabilities which include products and platforms that are AI-powered. "We will also invest in research areas important for the future, in collaboration with our global academic partners and start-up ecosystem," he added. Krithivasan, who has been with TCS for several decades, said he has interacted with customers, leadership teams and employees as part of the leadership transition and added that an order book of USD 34.1 billion, coupled with strong pipeline of replenishment, gives it a good visibility for the medium-term. Chandrasekaran also said that companies need to focus on building talent for the future as the energy, supply chain and AI (artificial intelligence) transitions are going to require companies to reskill or upskill existing talent base, hire and integrate new talent and invest in research. In his note to shareholders, Gopinathan spoke about overcoming the challenges on the HR front, and said TCS' best years are ahead. "We broke out of the vicious cycle of hiring and counter-hiring within the industry by investing in onboarding an unprecedented number of fresh engineers," he said, pointing out that it hired 1.10 lakh fresh engineers in FY22 and 44,000 in FY23. Its global head for human resources, Milind Lakkad, said half of its over 6 lakh workforce has been hired since March 2020 and underscored the need for staff to return to working from offices. "New employees get acculturated through physical interactions with senior colleagues and leaders, by observing and following their behaviors and ways of thinking. Without those interactions, employee engagement as well as acculturation got badly impacted," Lakkad said. Amid the talk of newer technologies like generative AI, Lakkad said the "linearity" between revenue and headcount is not going to go away any time soon. "With ever-increasing dependence on technology for competitive differentiation, we expect enterprise spending to keep growing, for which we will have to keep hiring new talent," he said. The company scrip was trading 0.89 per cent up at Rs 3263 a piece on the BSE at 1348 hrs as against gains of 0.27 per cent on the benchmark. The following has been edited for length and clarity. I'm a founder and business operations expert who worked in the tech industry for several years. During that time, I had two <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-industry-fake-work-problem-bad-managers-bosses-layoffs-jobs-2023-7">tech jobs that felt like fake jobs</a>. First, I started at a venture capital funded startup. I believed so much in their product that I decided to apply for a business development role at the company. I didn't get the job, but I looked good on paper as a candidate, so they created a new position for me. <h2>It wasn't the job I was looking for</h2>I had an MBA and was articulate. They asked me to do presentations and give talks at events. It wasn't the job I was looking for as a former founder, but I found a way to work with a company that had a product I believed in. After about a year, the business went through internal restructuring and they appointed me to a new role. This was the type of position that I was initially looking for and I learned that I was very good at business operations. <h2>My ideas were never implemented and things started to crumble</h2>I created a new process for how the design department should work with manufacturing, but my ideas were never implemented. During the restructuring, they also hired a lot of new people without an understanding of how the company worked. They <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wrong-hires-cost-us-nearly-500k-didnt-fire-fast-enough-2023-8">over-hired people who looked good</a> on paper. It seemed like they cared more about how things looked, so things started to crumble. One day, I went to work and our whole team was fired. I'd been at the company for about a year and a half, before I was let go. There were <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/signs-layoffs-are-coming-2017-6">signs that things weren't going well,</a> but we weren't told what to expect. <h2>After that job, I worked for another venture capital funded tech startup</h2>I wanted the next tech company to hire me for a specific executive role, but they didn't think they needed someone in that position. Instead, they hired me for a different role with an annual salary of about $130,000. Once I got into the company, however, I started doing operations related work. It was a young startup and needed a lot of structure. The CEO eventually ended up giving me the role I applied for. I noticed the company spent all their resources on creating and marketing products and merchandise that were unrelated to the main product. I tried to get them to focus on improving the main product, but the more work I did, the more frustrated I became. <h2>It felt like a fake job</h2>For almost three years, I tried to work with the development team to improve the product, but it felt like they weren't listening to any of my input. The company wanted me to focus on its image and do presentations for potential buyers. When I presented my pitch decks, they told me not to talk about any improvements that could be made to the product. They just wanted me to make the company's brand look good for buyers. After a while, the company was sold and I realized a trend. Some venture-capital tech startups build a company with the sole purpose of creating a brand good enough to sell to a buyer. It's the cause of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ft.com/content/6395df7e-1bab-4ea1-a7ea-afaa71354fa0">venture capital tech bubble</a>. I also believe some startups create <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/silicon-valley-debates-tech-employees-doing-fake-work-2023-3">fake jobs that look good</a> on paper for people while creating subpar products or services. Then they fire everyone and sell the company to the best buyer. I talked to other colleagues and people with similar jobs in the industry and they had similar experiences. <h2>Now, I have my own coaching business</h2>I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. I wanted to do my job, but was unable to because I felt like the board and the founder put me in an awkward position. I left that job, before I could be fired, and haven't looked back. I now have my own coaching business called <a target="_blank" href="https://celiarias.com/">The Grown-Ass Business</a>. I help businesses focus and build their products or services without having to rely on venture capital funds. I also train business coaches on how to coach their clients. Although I had tech jobs that felt fake, I did walk away with new skills that I can now use to help other businesses. I also learned how to do things differently for my own business.

I earned up to $130K in tech roles, but the jobs felt fake. Here's why I think startups hire people to build a brand only to fire them later on.

<ul><li>Made-in-India drone companies are seeing a boost in sales post ban of drone imports by the government. </li><li>Consumer brands like Swiggy, Zomato, Dunzo and <keyword id="41887" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="biryani" source="Orion">Biryani</keyword> by Kilo have started launching trials for delivery by drones. </li><li>Drones are being used for defense, consumer and delivery purposes. </li><li><keyword id="1605364" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="throttle" source="Orion">Throttle</keyword>, a drone manufacturing company based out of Bangalore, witnessed a 150% growth. </li></ul>Declaring the Indian drone industry as a ‘sunrise sector’, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, under the Ministry of Commerce, banned the import of drones in February. This has given a fillip to homegrown drone companies that are finding innovative uses for these unmanned aerial vehicles. One of India’s leading drone companies <keyword id="7785402" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="throttle-aerospace-systems" source="Orion">Throttle Aerospace Systems</keyword> (TAS) witnessed a 150% growth since the announcement. Even e-commerce companies like Dunzo, Swiggy and Zomato have ventured into the drone delivery space. Last year, Zomato acquired a drone startup <keyword id="6576859" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="techeagle" source="Orion">TechEagle</keyword> to build models that can help deliver essentials and possibly food in the near future. Medicines and Biryani from the sky <keyword id="2757817" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rattanindia" source="Orion">RattanIndia</keyword>’s drone company Neosky in association with TAS, is now planning to also supply drones for e-commerce and consumer-led initiatives besides defence. The companies have partnered with Dunzo, leading hospitals in India and even grocery delivery for Instamart, by Swiggy. At present, they are manufacturing 30 drones per month, aiming to go upto 45-50 units in the near future. Consumer brands like Swiggy recently partnered with Garuda Aerospace and Throttle to launch doorstep deliveries for groceries through Instamart. Its trials have already begun across Delhi-NCR and Bangalore. Another startup Biryani by Kilo delivered Biryani to eight influencers post the launch of eight stores in Hyderabad. As of now, the drone space in India is extensively being used in the defense sector and helping with delivery of average payload commodities. “We can see consumer led drones picking up but before that we would need designated drone corridors by the government. As of now, drones would be extensively used in the defense sector or for average load deliveries. Though it is exciting to witness food being delivered by a drone, it is further down the future,” said Sarath Chandra <keyword id="14985844" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="gudlavalleti" source="Orion">Gudlavalleti</keyword>, CEO of Neosky. The government too had founded extended uses for drones. During the pandemic, a box weighing 12 kilos of medicines and 20 vials of vaccines was delivered to rural parts of Telangana through drones in an initiative called ‘Medicines from the Sky’. ‘Laws for this sector are still being made’ The government is taking active steps to boost domestic manufacturing of drones. On July 6, 2022, India’s aviation ministry released the second provisional list of 23 beneficiaries of the production-linked incentives (PLI) scheme for the drone industry. Combined annual sales turnover of PLI beneficiaries in the drone industry reached ₹3.19 billion in 2021-22 from ₹880 million the previous year. “A welcome change by the government was to stop drone imports which has boosted Make In India drone companies. Dividing India’s airspace into Red, Green and Amber zones has also helped. But laws for this sector are still being made as it is very new,” said Gudlavalleti. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has divided the Indian airspace into three zones- Green (no permission required), Amber (controlled airspace) and Red (no drones allowed). The government also launched a DigitalSky platform in January 2022 for verification of Made in India drones. The drone defender Through small steps, the Indian government is also opening the door for commercial use of drones during disaster management and even economic mapping. Beginning April 2022, all drone operators have been allowed to promote secure operations without needing multiple approvals by possessing a valid UIN. Throttle is one such beneficiary. On Thursday, RattanIndia through their drone company Neosky assisted with manufacturing company Throttle launched a ‘drone defender.’ It was unveiled by Minister General <keyword id="6364699" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="v-k-singh" source="Orion">V K Singh</keyword>, MOS Aviation Ministry at Air Force Auditorium during the ‘Unmanned Aerial Systems India 2022’ event on September 13. “This drone is 70% indegenious and launches a soft-kill against approaching rogue drones without any human intervention. Instead of using direct attack, this drone will pull down the attacker by shooting a net,” said <keyword id="14985845" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nagander-ramaswamy" source="Orion">Nagander Ramaswamy</keyword>, CEO of drone manufacturing company TAS. “We have acquired a 60% stake in Throttle and hope to build our capacity further,” said Gudlavalleti.
