New Delhi, Feb 1 () Prices of consumer goods like refrigerators, ACs, coolers and washing machines may rise in the short-term after the government's proposal to increase basic customs duty on components like compressors and motors, industry players said on Saturday.
 According to the Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association (CEAMA), the price escalation would be in the short run but the move would give a boost to domestic manufacturing.
 With respect to the free trade agreement (FTA), the government's move to incorporate a suitable provision in the Customs Act will help boost domestic manufacturing in the long run, said the body which represents appliances and consumer electronic industry.
 "The duty increase on certain components like compressors and motors and in some cases on Finished Goods, will help to further develop the manufacturing eco system in the country in the long run and is aligned to the Make in India initiative," said CEAMA President Kamal Nandi.
 According to him, the scheme focused on "encouraging the manufacture of mobile phones, electronic equipment and semi-conductor packaging will benefit the electronics industry at large".
 While presenting the budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday proposed to hike the basic customs duty to 12.5 per cent from 10 per cent on compressor of refrigerator and air conditioner.
 Besides, the government's continued attention towards skilling especially new-age skill sets such as AI, Robotics will help improve the quality and quantity of skilled labour - critical to industrial growth.
 "Additionally, taking electricity to every household by promoting 'smart metering' will be a great step as it will result in a direct and positive impact on the consumer durables sector. Also, this would give consumers the freedom to choose the supplier and rate as per their requirements," it said.
 Panasonic India &amp; Sout Asia President &amp; CEO Manish Sharma said government push on enabling technology with regard to development of five new smart cities, setting up of data centre parks, investment in quantum technology, will help establish India as new age economy.
 "From a consumer electronics industry perspective, the decision to encourage domestic manufacturing of mobiles and electronic goods in India is a welcome move while a definitive timeline would have helped further boost the industry sentiments. It is one of the vital steps towards establishing a robust, ecosystem for domestic manufacturing while also giving a boost to exports," said Sharma
 Havells India CMD Anil Rai Gupta said that Union Budget has managed to address some key issues around infrastructure spending, electrification, affordable housing that present significant business opportunity.
 "We particularly see this having a positive impact on the demand roadmap on the electrical and building segment players. Further the allocation of Rs 22,000 crore to power and renewable sector and Rs 27,300 crores for development of industry and commence for year 2020-21 will accelerate growth opportunities for the electrical industry," he said.
 Syska Director Rajesh Uttamchandani said the measures in budget will further enhance the exports of networked products.
 "Another important step taken is the further push provided by the Government for its smart cities mission. It aims to create 100 cities with state-of-the-art infrastructure that includes intelligent lighting, Wi-Fi access points, leading to enhancement of the quality of life of every citizen while building efficient living spaces for future generations, " he said. Prices of consumer goods may rise due to duty price hike: CEAMA

New Delhi, Nov 22 () The new energy labelling norms, which will be effective from January next year, are expected to make manufacturing of five-star refrigerators costlier by up to Rs 6,000, industry body CEAMA said.
The labelling guidelines will mandate the manufacturers to shift to vacuum panels from the traditional foams for cooling for the five-star range of refrigerators, which will be a challenge for the industry, the Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association (CEAMA) said.
The Star Rating label change for compressor-based products like room air conditioners (RAC) and refrigerators by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) would be effective from January 2020 and both frost free and direct cooling are changing to one star.
Now with this change, it will be difficult for the industry to roll out five star label refrigerators as the table change of the energy efficiency norms is happening in January.
"The same product which is now available at some price would go up by at least Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 because we have to put a vacuum panel to get a 5 star refrigerator," said CEAMA President Kamal Nandi.
He further said "nobody would pay that amount and I also do not have that scale to put that investment on my plant as that requires a different line for that". 
On the performance of the appliance and consumer electronics industry, Nandi said it is back on growth path. 
In FY 2018-19, the segment grew by around 12 to 13 per cent, largely led by categories as AC and washing machines, said Nandi.
In the TV segment, Nandi said, online channel saw growth. Some new small brands did "extremely well" last fiscal, he added.
In FY 2017-18, the industry saw almost flat growth and even there was degrowth in some of the segments.
In the first half of this year, AC segment saw a good growth.
"We are growing by 15 per cent in H1 (April-September) and this is again largely led by airconditioners, which is growing in excess of 35 per cent overall," he said adding that sales of AC is on rise.
The association is also requesting the government to reduce the GST on AC and bring it to lower slab of 18 per cent, which would help the segment to grow as the penetration level is below 5 per cent.
Over the government's mandate on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which mandates the makers to get their waste collected, Nandi said it would impact profit margin and instead there should be a better system to get it collected from customers. KRH MKJ

New energy label norms: Five-star refrigerators to cost Rs 6,000 more, says CEAMA

The consumer durable industry is betting big on Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>’s ‘<keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>’ campaign in the upcoming <keyword id="2549811" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Budget-2015">budget 2015</keyword>. The industry, which is pegged at Rs 45,000 crore in FY14, is expecting the government to focus on developing infrastructural sector, which in turn will cut down on the high input cost that most companies bear. 
	 
	“Government’s emphasis on improving residential and industrial infrastructure coupled with focus to make India a global manufacturing hub is likely to fuel the dynamic growth of this industry,” said Krishan Sachdev, managing director, Carrier Midea India Pvt. Ltd. 
	 
	Focus on Make in India 
	 
	According to Sachdev, the budget should focus on announcing major policy reforms that will boost the manufacturing sector in India. 
	 
	An industry expert also noted, “The Centre must take decisive measures to make manufacturing in India more competitive and attractive in order to enable industry players domestically manufacture consumer products such as washing machine, air conditioner and others. Manufacturing domestically will not just slash our input costs but is more economically viable than importing finished goods from other countries”. 
	 
	Slash excise duty 
	 
	“Recent recall of excise duty cut has certainly put strain on the industry and consequently some industry players are compelled to hike price which is impacting the performance,” said Sachdev. 
	 In a report, Manish Sharma, managing director of Panasonic India and president of Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association (<keyword id="294408" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="CEAMA">CEAMA</keyword>), shared a similar sentiment and added, “We strongly propose a reduction in the excise duty to give an overall boost to the sector”. 
	 
	It should be noted that the Centre recently brought back excise duty on consumer products, which has adversely impacted the sales of the consumer goods companies as it dented the consumer sentiment in the market. 
	 
	Implement GST immediately 
	 
	Sachdev believed that introduction of GST and a clear policy on ease of doing business in India are some steps which will fuel the economic growth. “Additionally, falling interest rates and lower commodity prices should increase disposable income for consumers which will push the consumer durable segment further,” he stated. 
	 
	Sharma of CEAMA too reiterated “Once fully implemented, GST will create a single, unified Indian market and will diminish the multiple layers of indirect taxation that prevails at present.” 
	 
	Our view 
	 
	According to market estimates, the consumer durable industry is expected to grow by 20% year on year. While the industry is on growth track, the rate of growth can certainly be doubled, if correct policy reforms are announced in the upcoming budget. The industry can certainly grow by multifold if the government focuses on making India a manufacturing hub in the global market.

Consumer goods companies bet big on Make in India for growth

Prices for LED TV and appliances such as refrigerator, washing machines are expected to go up by around 10 per cent from January next year on account of rise in costs of key input materials like copper, aluminium and steel and increase in ocean and air freights charges. Besides, prices of TV panels (Opencell) have also gone up by over two-folds due to short supply by the global vendors, while cost of plastic has also gone up due to rise in crude oil prices, said manufacturers. Terming it as imminent and unavoidable, manufacturers such as LG, Panasonic and <keyword id="192310" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Thomson">Thomson</keyword> are going to increase the prices from January, however, Sony is still reviewing the situation and is yet to take a call on this. "We expect the increase in commodity prices to impact our product pricing in near future. I anticipate the prices to go up by 6-7 per cent in January itself and may go up to 10-11 per cent towards end of FY Q1," said Panasonic India President &amp; CEO Manish Sharma. "From January, we are going to increase the price of 7-to 8 per cent on all products including TV, <keyword id="87019" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Washing-machine">Washing Machine</keyword>, refrigerator etc. There is an increase in raw material prices and metals as copper and aluminium. Moreover, crude oil prices have gone up, hence the cost of plastic materials have also gone up substantially," said LG Electronics India VP-Home Appliances Vijay Babu. While for <keyword id="233026" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sony-India">Sony India</keyword>, it's still a 'wait and watch' situation and yet to take a final call on this but hinted that it is also moving in that directions. On being asked about the prices Sony India Managing Director Sunil Nayyar said: "Not yet. It is a wait and watch. We are watching the supply side, which is changing day by day. Its blurry situation and we have not decided as how much... Tendency is moving towards that situation." The panel prices have edged up and the some of the other raw material costs also has gone up, specially for the TV, he added. "I reckon it with primarily with demand and supply situation. There is excess demand because of work from home and there is limited supply because factories were not running at full capacity and that has created a vacuum in the supply side and have pushed up the prices," said Nayyar adding "it was a perfect storm as all thing came together disruption in supply, excessive demand and extraneous issues". Prices of small screen sizes have a bigger issue for the industry and their prices have gone up significantly. "Off course, the large screen also has an issue but I do not think it is troubling. India is still a predominantly 32-inch screen size market," said Nayyar. <keyword id="3562273" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="super-plastronics">Super Plastronics</keyword>, the brand licensee for French Electronics brand Thomson and Kodak, said there is a scarcity of TV Opencell in the market and the prices have almost gone up by 200 per cent. "There is an increase of 200 per cent in panel prices and despite the increase, there is short supply. Due to no alternative of panel manufacture at the global stage, we are dependent on China. So, Thomson and Kodak will increase the android TV prices by 20 per cent from January," said SPPL CEO <keyword id="4774298" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Avneet-Singh-Marwah">Avneet Singh Marwah</keyword>. Videotex International Director Arjun Bajaaj said: "The other factor leading to a sharp rise in the prices is the three-fold increase in Import Freight charges compared to October 2020." However, there is a warning note also from the Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association (CEAMA) saying that a price hike by the brands may also hamper the overall demand in the next quarter. "A rise in the commodity cost by 20-25 per cent, increase in the ocean and air freights to the extent of 5-6 times due to shortage of containers and the lag in the mining activity due to the pandemic is putting upward pressure on the overall input cost for Appliances. As a result, brands are most likely to increase prices to the extent of 8-10 per cent in near future, which may hamper the overall demand in the next quarter," said CEAMA President Kamal Nandi. However, Nandi, who is also Business Head and Executive Vice President - Godrej Appliances, said the industry hopes that it will be offset to some extent by pent up demand surfacing now. According to Nayyar: "It would not sustain for a long period but for the industry until the first half of the next year, the pressure would remain." The Indian appliances and consumer electronics industry is largely dependent on global imports, mainly from China, for the sourcing of components and some of the finished goods. According to a joint report by CEAMA and Frost &amp; Sullivan, the industry had a total market size of Rs 76,400 crore in 2018-19, in which Rs 32,200 crore was contributed from domestic manufacturing. Prices of TV and home appliances likely to go up by around 10% from January 2021

New Delhi, Jan 26 () Manufacturers of appliances and consumer electronics are seeking lower taxes on eco-friendly and energy-efficient products, more incentives for domestic manufacturing and waiving of customs duty on inputs imported to make the components in the upcoming Union Budget.
The Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association (CEAMA) has urged the government to offer incentives for manufacturers to produce energy-efficient products which will be in line with the government's focus on sustainability in a pre-budget memorandum. 
"Lowering the GST tax slabs for eco-friendly and energy-efficient products like air conditioners (4 star, 5 star models) and refrigerators (direct cool and frost-free) to 12 per cent will drive demand and increase the adoption of sustainable appliances by Indian consumers," said CEAMA President Kamal Nandi.
"The upcoming budget should additionally offer incentives for manufacturers to produce these energy-efficient products which will be in line with the governments focus on sustainability," he said.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to present the Budget for financial year 2020-21 on February 1.
According to CEAMA, the industry has largely been stagnant this year and with increased customs duties, global economic changes and fluctuations in currency and commodity, the demand levels for next year are difficult to predict.
Indian component suppliers are facing difficulty in competing with cheap Chinese imports, it said.
"The government should consider initiating some measures to reduce the input cost to make these components by waiving duty on the inputs imported to make the components," said Nandi, who is also Godrej Appliances Business Head &amp; Executive vice president.
"Besides this, the government should also focus on the promotion of R&amp;D and incentivisation of local manufacturing. The government should reinstate the reimbursement of R&amp;D expenses to 200 per cent," he said adding that 
"additionally, any expenditure incurred for taking professional help in aesthetic designing, prototyping, electronic controls designing etc should also be allowed as R&amp;D expenditures." 
Panasonic India and South Asia President and CEO Manish Sharma expects reforms in the union budget, saying that would drive consumption and improve the consumer demand.
"In order to realise the 'Make in India' vision, it is essential for the government to reduce basic customs duty on parts used in manufacturing of key components such as Motors and PCB which currently ranges from 7.5 -10 per cent. To give a perspective, reduction in custom duty on these parts, used in manufacture of PCB and motors which are further used for manufacturing Washing Machine, Refrigerator and AC will reduce input cost, allowing Indian manufacturers to be far more competitive," he said.
BSH Home Appliances India Managing Director and CEO Neeraj Bahl said Union Budget 2020 will focus of regaining consumer confidence, by reduction of personal tax, which in turn will help boost consumer demand and help the industry, which had witnessed a flat growth last year.
"We urge the government to bring in constructive policies to lend support and drive growth in the sector," he said adding that "the government should also consider reduction in GST rates for products like refrigerators and air conditioners, which are now evolving from being luxuries to necessities for our consumers".
Usha International CEO Dinesh Chhabra: "One of the key measures in the sector could be reduction of GST rates on electronic components and rationalization of the slabs for various categories of products. In India, prices of home appliances reportedly set to rise after weak Indian Rupee raised input costs for manufacturers

New Delhi, Jan 5 () Encouraged by a three-fold jump in sales in 2019, China-based consumer electronics firm TCL Electronics said it is aiming to be among the top-three brands in the smart TV segment in India.
 The company would focus on introducing smart range of products with artificial intelligence (AI) and internet of things (IoT) in the domestic market here, which would be the "basic infrastructure" of its offerings.
 TCL, which has also forayed into the home appliances segment, plans to introduce smart range of products and would launch an air-conditioner this season with AI and IoT features.
 "In 2019, the sales of our Android AI TVs grew by 300 per cent. The same feat elevated our status as the fourth largest TV brand in India. Empowered by a great response from our customers, we are eyeing the number three slot in the Indian smart TV segment," TCL India Country Manager Mike Chen told .
 TCL has been successful in "disrupting the status quo" in the domestic smart TV segment by introducing AI Android TVs and is also the first to introduce Android Pie (9.0) TV in India, he said.
 "We have already enjoyed a successful run in the smart TV segment and continue to strengthen our presence. Furthermore, with the launch of smart ACs, we would further diversify our offerings," Chen said.
 TCL, which has invested over Rs 2,200 crore in setting up an LED panel factory in Andhra Pradesh, would also expand its sales network and open its first brand store in Chennai this year.
 "In 2020, we will be pursuing our brand shop expansion pan-India. The TCL Exclusive Centre will house the smart home ecosystem that we are trying to accomplish in India. The first such store is slated to be launched in Chennai," he said.
 The company has also launched its TCL Home App, through which its smart home devices can be controlled via mobile phones and voice-based commands.
 "This will prove to be one of the key differentiators for the brand," he said.
 "We are launching the full range of smart ACs in January. Furthermore, our washing machines and refrigerators have already hit the markets," Chen added.
 Asked whether TCL has any plans to partner with any network services provider for its smart products, he said, "No such plans at the moment. However, open to exploring the possibilities."
 TCL expects the first batch of LED panels to roll out from its Tirupati plant this year in July.
 "We are entering into the mature phases of setting up the panel factory. Adhering to the current flow of work, we expect the first batch to roll out by July," he said.

TCL aims to be among top-three smart TV brands in India in 2020

New Delhi, Nov 22 () The appliances and consumer electronics industry is projected to double to Rs 1.48 lakh crore by 2024-25, according to a report.
 The market is expected to see acceleration in growth on account of surging rural consumption, reducing replacement cycles, increasing penetration of retail, a wide choice of brands and products at various price points, it added.
 The industry had a total market size of Rs 76,400 crore in 2018-19, in which Rs 32,200 crore was contributed from domestic manufacturing, according to the joint report by CEAMA and Frost &amp; Sullivan.
 The report is based on product categories, which include air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, television (TV) and audio.
 "The overall market size of the five categories covered in this project for the year FY19 is 76,400 crore and the market is estimated to grow at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 11.7 per cent till FY25," the report said.
 It also suggests that domestic value addition for "ACE (appliances and consumer electronics) products under scope stands at 34 per cent in FY19 and is likely to grow to 54 per cent by FY25".
 The report expects the air conditioning (AC) market size to grow to 165 lakh units in 2024-25 from 65 lakh units in 2018-19, while refrigerator to grow to 275 lakh units as compared with 145 lakh units in 2018-19.
 The TV market is expected to grow to 284 lakh units in 2024-25 from 175 lakh units in 2018-19 and washing machines to be at 126 lakh units from 70 lakh units of 2018-19.
 Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association President Kamal Nandi said domestic manufacturing is increasing and companies have invested around Rs 7,000 crore in past few years.
 However, he also added that the sector is still facing challenges in the form of logistics, finance cost and lacks a proper ecosystem.
 "Free-trade agreements are also becoming an issue to the ACE industry," said Nandi.
 He also requested the government to reduce goods and services tax on ACs as well as on TV panels above 32 inch and bring them under 18 per cent bracket.
 He also added that the ACE industry, which is focusing on domestic manufacturing, would help the government achieve its goal to be a USD 5-trillion economy by 2024.
 The report said for refrigerator, local manufacturing adds up to 55 per cent of the total market size. In washing machine, it has witnessed strong local manufacturing and adds up to 75 per cent of the total market size.
 In audio, domestic manufacturing is only 22 per cent.
 "In FDP TV, open cells and the chips of TVs are predominantly imported from Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan and China. The government has removed import duty on open cell panel used in production of TV sets, a move which would lower the cost," the report said. KRH HRS

New Delhi, Apr 21 () Many appliances and consumer durables manufacturers have decided not to resume manufacturing despite the government relaxing certain guidelines for industries to operate in lockdown 2.0, preferring to wait till the curbs are fully lifted.Companies like Panasonic India, Godrej Appliances, Dixon Technologies and Super Plastronics Pvt Ltd said with retail outlets shut there is no point to start production as there is existing unsold inventory of March at warehouses and dealers.Moreover, in certain states like Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and some districts like Noida of Uttar Pradesh, local authorities and governments decided not to allow any manufacturing activities.According to Panasonic India, the company would wait to start production until a favourable market condition returns."As our factory in Jhajhar, Haryana is in the green zone, we are engaging with the local authorities for permission to start manufacturing in the near future. The issue today is more on the demand side than supply, we have enough inventory with our distributors of our ACs and refrigerators to meet consumer demands," Panasonic India and South Asia President and CEO Manish Sharma told .The objective behind starting operations will be ensuring sustainability over longer term once markets are allowed to operate, he added. (Eds: Recasting overnight story) New Delhi, Apr 22 () Many appliances and consumer durables manufacturers have decided not to resume manufacturing despite the government relaxing certain guidelines for industries to operate in lockdown 2.0, preferring to wait till the curbs are fully lifted. Companies like Panasonic India, Godrej Appliances, Dixon Technologies and Super Plastronics Pvt Ltd said with retail outlets shut there is no point to start production as there is existing unsold inventory of March at warehouses and dealers. Moreover, in certain states like Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and some districts like Noida of Uttar Pradesh, local authorities and governments decided not to allow any manufacturing activities. According to Panasonic India, the company would wait to start production until a favourable market condition returns. "As our factory in Jhajhar, Haryana is in the green zone, we are engaging with the local authorities for permission to start manufacturing in the near future. The issue today is more on the demand side than supply, we have enough inventory with our distributors of our ACs and refrigerators to meet consumer demands," Panasonic India and South Asia President and CEO Manish Sharma told . New Delhi, May 12 () Top companies across sectors - automobile maker Maruti Suzuki, consumer electronics giant Samsung to IT giant Infosys - have reopened factories and offices as India took its first steps towards resuming economic activity after weeks under a near-total coronavirus lockdown. While the government has allowed businesses to resume under strict guidelines, companies are not rushing to achieve pre-COVID-19 run-rates and instead are calibrating staff strength as they are aware that any incident of infection can prove costly. Companies said employee safety and workplace hygiene is the prime focus. While Maruti resumed operations at its Manesar plant in Haryana on Tuesday, Infosys opened offices in some cities with up to 5 per cent staff and plans to gradually raise employee strength to 40 per cent. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has less than 1 per cent of its employees currently in India offices. Mahindra &amp; Mahindra too started operations at its factories with a limited number of workers. Flipkart, Panasonic India, Whirlpool and Dabur are among a host of companies that have put in place plans to restart operations with a small section of staff. Tata group-owned jewellery brand Tanishq has announced its plans to reopen its 328 stores across the country in a phased manner. The government imposed a nationwide lockdown on March 25, and it has already been extended twice -- first until May 3 and then again until May 17. However, some curbs have been eased beginning April 20 with permission being given to industries in rural areas to restart. Later, production, sale and transport of goods in areas where virus cases are less severe have also been allowed. However, the process of restarting factories and businesses is likely to be protracted, with production only gradually ramping up towards operational capacity levels. IHS Markit said although the limited restart of some industries has been permitted since April 20, India will still suffer severe disruptions to its industrial output due to the protracted lockdown. "The Indian economy is facing a recession in the 2020-21 financial year for the first time since 1979-80, during the second OPEC oil crisis shock," IHS Markit said. "Consequently, IHS Markit expects the lockdown measures to result in a contraction of Indian industrial production in the 2020-21 financial year." But several companies across sectors ranging from textiles to consumer electronics and liquor to pharma have partially resumed operations after getting permission from local authorities. While Panasonic India and South Asia President &amp; CEO Manish Sharma said the company plans to start operations at its factory with 30 per cent capacity and slowly take it up to 50 per cent in a month's time, Samsung Electronics India said its Noida factory has started limited operations. The Noida factory of Dixon Technologies too has resumed operations. The firm's Tirupati and Dehradun plants too have started operations at about one-third capacity, which will be scaled up to 75-80 per cent in the next one week, said Sunil Vachani, Chairman, Dixon Technologies. Neeraj Bahl, the CEO of BSH Home Appliances -- German company which manufactures and sells under Bosch and Siemens brands in India -- said the firm is in process of starting production in its Tamil Nadu factory with limited staff. Mahendra Singhi, President, Cement Manufacturers Association (CMA), said 25-30 per cent of cement production capacity in the country has resumed. JK Lakshmi Cement director Shailendra Chouksey said the firm has clearances to operate all its seven plants in five states with reduced staff strength and following government's COVID-19 guidelines for factories. "However, these measures alone shall not suffice. Unless construction is allowed rather encouraged to resume operations", the sector outlook would not be very good, he said. Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association (CEAMA) president Kamal Nandi said slowly retail operations are opening up in green and orange zones. "Roughly industry's 30-35 per cent outlets are open throughout the country though geographically not equally distributed." "We have also got permission to open factories in green and orange zones. Most of the brands are preparing to resume operations. Some brands started last week and some would start from this week. Even more important, the supplier's plant is opening up and we are all preparing to resume operations and slowly production would start," he said. There is still no pressing need for the brands to go ahead and start mass production from day one as there is a lot of inventory in warehouses and with dealers, he added. Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) director-general Rajesh Menon said the auto sector lost over Rs 90,000 crore in revenue due to the lockdown. Ashok Leyland MD &amp; CEO Vipin Sondhi said these are truly unprecedented times, and the government and industry need to work closely to bring the industry back on its feet. The <keyword id="3315394" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="demonetisation">demonetisation</keyword> of currency has made the entire nation undergo a cash crunch and this has affected the market in a very bad way. Along with many markets, smartphone market is also facing the problems regarding sales. Inventories are piled up with devices and people don’t have enough new banknotes for purchase and this may force the mobile handset makers to alter production schedules and defer new launches. 
 
According to reports, the situation has turned worse since the demonetisation announcement on November 8 and it may also affect shipment numbers for mobile makers in October-December quarter. 
 
"Dealers have been sitting idle, some shops are also closed, because consumers are not coming to buy phones and sellers are not accepting old currency notes.There's an inventory pile-up happening and this dry spell will continue till November 25, till the time cash is easily accessible to consumers," Ravinder Zutshi, mobile council head at Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association (CEAMA) told ET. 
 
According to a report by ET, smartphone sales are down by about 70-80% from pre-demonetisation days and this have led to a serious pile up in inventories as smartphones are generally bought with cash. 
 
"There are no customers. Our existing stock isn't selling, so where is the question of ordering more stock," Rajesh Chauhan, owner of a small brick-and mortar shop, told ET. 
 
Consumers have put large appliances and smaller electronic items such as phones lower down on their priority lists after the government banned use of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes from last Wednesday. 
 Handset makers such as <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword>, <keyword id="6355189" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="lava">Lava</keyword> and <keyword id="1188106" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gionee">Gionee</keyword>, television and white goods makers are all watching the situation closely , amid the inventory pile-up, but are yet to take a call on modifying their production schedules. 
 
The inventory pile-up for TV and white goods industry is still insignificant as of now since the industry anyway adjusts its production after Diwali when sales as a routine take a dip, added industry insiders.

Demonetisation is delaying new smartphone launches. Here’s how

As compared to last year, the sales of smartphones increased, by both value and volume, this festive season. The sales went up on huge demand for smartphones in Rs 20,000-category. The smartphone sales increased by minimum 40%. 
 
The upbeat sales has set a trend for the quarter ending December, which typically makes up for nearly a fourth to a fifth of annual revenue for the industry. This is a relief after a tepid first half this year. 
 “Compared to last year's <keyword id="188" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diwali">Diwali</keyword>, we saw an increase of 40 per cent in actual sales by volume, as per consumer activations, for <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> smartphones, and if we include Yu, sales were up 60 per cent,” <keyword id="400990" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax-Informatics">Micromax Informatics</keyword> chief marketing officer Subhajit Sen told ET. 
 People with knowledge in this sector said that <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>’s mobile phone sales saw an increment of about 40%by value and consumer electronic’s sales had a risen sale of about 30%. <keyword id="6366627" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Intex">Intex</keyword> and <keyword id="145729" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karbonn">Karbonn</keyword> also had an higher sales by 14 per cent and 20 per cent, respectively, while players such as <keyword id="6367990" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Panasonic">Panasonic</keyword>, <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword> and LeEco, which have comparatively smaller bases, saw their sales more than double this Diwali against last year. 
 
The rise seen in sales during this season is said to be because of pent-up consumer demand coupled with a number of model launches by top tier as well as new entrant Chinese brands. Enabling 4G phones to allow Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and higher purchasing power due to good monsoon this year, acted as key catalysts. 
 
"This resulted in a 125 per cent growth in smartphone sales during Diwali compared to FY15-16,” Ravinder Zutshi, chairman of the mobile and communications council at CEAMA, the consumer electronics manufacturing association, told ET. 
 
There was an increase seen in the sales of phones in the range the Rs 8,000-20,000 and increased number of people entered the Rs 10,000-12,000,Rs 17,000-18,000 and the Rs 15,000 price points. 
 
"So, consumers in the sub-Rs 10,000 price segments ended up spending more and moving to one of these price bands, thus expanding share of the mid-segment. This was not the case last year,” a chief executive at one of the leading retail chains in India told ET. 
 
The strong demand during the festive season this year brings some relief to an industry which has seen smartphone sales losing pace in the first half of the year as fewer consumers switched from featurephones to smartphones, forcing analysts to lower their smartphone sales expectations in 2016 by as much as 17 per cent.
