Amid the ongoing selling in the Indian stock markets, the growth in the demat accounts also declined in October, highlighted a report by ICICI Securities The report highlighted that after a strong four-month period where monthly additions to demat accounts exceeded 4 million, October 2024 saw a decline in new demat accounts. It also added that the total number of accounts added in October fell to 3.45 million, down from 4.36 million in September 2024. This dip breaks the streak of steady growth in demat accounts, suggesting a possible shift in <keyword id="20030258" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investor-sentiment" source="keywords">investor sentiment</keyword> or market conditions. "Demat accounts additions fall below 4 million after four months After four consecutive months of more than 4 million <keyword id="23912333" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Demat-account-additions" source="keywords">demat account additions</keyword> in a month," the report said. Among depositories, the Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL) maintained a strong lead in market share. In October 2024, CDSL's share of total and incremental demat accounts stood at 79% and 90%, respectively. Meanwhile, individual investor activity showed mixed trends in September 2024 across different market segments. The report stated that the number of individual investors actively trading in the National Stock Exchange's (NSE) cash market increased slightly. In September, 15.8 million individual investors traded at least once, marking a 1.9% increase from 15.5 million in August. Over the first half of the financial year (6MFY24), a total of 29.4 million individuals participated at least once in the cash market, compared to 30.7 million for the full FY24. However, participation in the equity derivatives segment saw a downturn. The number of individual investors trading at least once in a month on the NSE's equity derivatives segment dropped by 3.6 % in September, falling to 4.46 million from 4.66 million in August. For the first half of FY24, a total of 8.7 million individuals participated in the derivatives market, a decline from 9.6 million for the entire FY24. This decline indicates a reduced interest in derivative trading among individual investors, possibly due to increased volatility or changing market preferences. The report said, "A total of 29.4 million individuals have participated at least once in 6MFY24 vs. 30.7 million in FY24. Individual investors, who traded at least once in a month on NSE's equity derivatives segment, declined 3.6% MoM in Sep'24 to 4.46 million vs. 4.66 million in Aug'24". The dip in both new demat accounts and derivatives participation among individual investors suggests a cautious outlook among retail participants. As global economic conditions remain uncertain, domestic markets face volatility amid the continued selling by foreign investors.

CDSL stock has skyrocketed 296% since March 2020 on surge in retail demat accounts

New Delhi, Nov 28 () Leading stock exchange BSE, the promoter of Central Depository Services Ltd (CDSL), will offload 4 per cent stake in the company.
The exchange will sell 41.8 lakh equity shares, representing 4 per cent of its stake in CDSL through offer for sale route, according to information available with the NSE.
 The stake-sale is being conducted on the NSE on Thursday for institutional investors and on Friday for retail investors.
At the end of September quarter, the BSE owned 24 per cent stake in CDSL. While banks and financial institutions' shareholding stood at 22.42 per cent, mutual funds held 9.54 per cent and FPIs owned 1.78 per cent stake in the company.
 CDSL's stock is currently trading at Rs 221.70 on the NSE, down 0.72 per cent from the previous close.
 CDSL, which allows investors to deposit securities by opening an account in electronic form (dematerialised), gets its revenues from transaction charges, account maintenance charges and settlement charges paid by depository participants as well as annual fees, corporate action and e-voting charges paid by companies whose securities are admitted in the depository's systems.
 "The seller (BSE) proposes to sell up to 41,80,000 lakh shares of face value Rs 10 each representing 4 per cent of the total paid-up equity shares of the company on November 28 (for non-retail investors only) and on November 29 (for retail investors and for non-retail investors who choose to carry forward their unallotted bids),"as per the notice. 
CDSL got listed on the exchange in 2017. Through the IPO, the BSE, which had 50.05 per cent stake in CDSL, sold 26.05 per cent of its holding, to meet markets regulator Sebi norms. 
Under Sebi regulations, a stock exchange cannot have more than 24 per cent stake in a depository.

Instead it has started a new prepaid recharge pack of ₹79 that offers up to four times more outgoing minutes of usage to customers along with twice the amount of data. Basically, it has hiked its cheapest prepaid plan to ₹79. “This change is in line with the company’s focus on offering superior connectivity solutions. Airtel customers on entry level recharges can now stay connected for longer without worrying about their account balance,” the company said in a BSE statement. “If they have hiked the plan the stock would have reacted but I don’t think there is any long term positive on the stock...eventually they will have to compete with Jio and Vodafone Idea and the space is so overcrowded that eventually none of these players have any pricing power at all.. The stock has really gone nowhere in 13 years now and unlikely to as right now they are competing in a market which is so stiff that everybody wants to gain market share,” said Rajat Sharma, founder of Sana Securities. Traders in the market must have found this announcement as a positive and that is why the rise in stock price, added Sharma. Many large short-only hedge funds identify and short companies that aren’t doing well without using F&amp;O, simply shorting the stocks directly.</li></ul>I guess you have read the headlines from the US on how retail traders are causing a “short squeeze” in stocks like <keyword id="363661" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="GameStop">GameStop</keyword>, AMC entertainment, etc. If you haven’t, check this article by <a href="https://finshots.in/archive/gamestop-reddit-retail-investors/">Finshots</a> that explains this well. We have been getting a lot of questions around shorting, and if a short squeeze of this scale can happen in stocks listed on Indian exchanges. It cannot, and below, I explain why. Quick intro to Stock lending &amp; borrowing (SLB) Many people who invest in the markets think that the only way to profit is buying stocks that have the potential to grow with an expectation that if the companies do well, the prices will also go up. This buying of stocks is also called going “long stocks”. While most of us invest or go long stocks, there is a small community of active traders who do the opposite. They identify stocks that are not doing well and bet that the stock prices will go down. The trade is to first sell a stock at the current price (yes, sell a stock without owning it) and then buy it back at a lower price, when it falls, and pocket the difference. You sell a stock that you don’t own by borrowing the stock from someone and then selling it in the market. When the price goes down, you buy it back and then return the stock to the lender and profit. Of course, you can lose money if the stock price goes up instead of down as you would have to buy it back at a higher price. Someone will lend you the stock because the borrower will pay a fee for that and in the process, the lender earns an additional income from their stock holding. Of course, a lender will lend the stocks only if their intention is to hold it for the long term and not sell it within the period for which the stock is lent. This mechanism of lending and borrowing stocks is called Stock Lending and Borrowing or SLB. It was introduced in India in 2008 and activity on the SLB platform only started picking up in 2018 when the regulator permitted rollover of stocks lent upto 12 months (minimum 1+11 months). Shorting on Indian exchanges On Indian exchanges, you can short stocks for intraday without borrowing from SLB platform. But such positions can’t be held overnight as you would be required to deliver the stocks for short positions held into the next trading day. While there are many short trades in stocks taken on an intraday basis, almost all overnight short positions are done using futures and options and not SLB, where traders bet on indices or stocks going down. Here are a few reasons: F&amp;O was introduced in 2001, so it had almost a 12-year head start to SLB, which started seeing the first bit of activity in 2013. Leverage (the ability to trade for more than the capital in hand) is inherently available with F&amp;O as a product. Also, with options, you have the flexibility to set up various trading strategies, and not just naked shorting like with SLB. Until recently, all F&amp;O contracts were cash-settled, which meant that they were simpler to trade than SLB where securities have to move between various accounts. In the exchange business, liquidity chases liquidity. F&amp;O contracts have a lot more liquidity than SLB, so by default, traders prefer to trade where the liquidity is higher as the impact costs tend to be much lower. But that said, there are a few benefits of trading on the SLB platform as well. In F&amp;O you can trade only in multiples of minimum lot size, but in SLB you could borrow and sell as low as a single share of a company. There are around 140 stocks that trade on F&amp;O, but the SLB platform has almost 350 stocks. So if you had to short stocks which are not on F&amp;O, the only option is SLB. F&amp;O contracts have a maximum validity of 3 months. You would have to bear a rollover cost (exit existing and enter the next 3-month contract). In stock F&amp;O contracts, the 3rd-month contract usually never has any trading volume, so you would need to roll over a contract almost every 2 months, which would be very expensive for long term short positions. In SLB, if you find a borrower who is willing to lend, you can borrow and sell stocks and hold a short position for upto 12 months without worrying about rollover costs. Lenders can earn an additional income on their long term portfolio and is an added incentive to participate. Because of these reasons, one might assume that there should be enough interest in the SLB platform to see activity. But there have been a few deterrents. Firstly, the lender’s income is qualified as “income from other sources”, so people lending will have to file using ITR3 and may need audits. Whenever there is a corporate action like rights and bonus issues, there is a forced closeout of the position. Finally, the product is complex in terms of back-end operations compared to F&amp;O, and brokerage firms still don’t have systems to scale this. At <keyword id="759851" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zerodha">Zerodha</keyword>, we are working on offering the SLB platform to all our customers in the next few months. Shorting on US stock exchanges Unlike in India, where SLB is relatively new and not active, it is a huge market in the US. Many large short-only hedge funds identify and short companies that aren’t doing well without using F&amp;O, simply shorting the stocks directly. I had written this post a couple of years back, comparing Indian brokerage industry to the US. Here is an excerpt from that post that talks about differences in how security lending works in the US compared to India. How there is an incentive for brokers to lend securities, which has helped grow that market. Securities Lending The structure of our depository system, like our payments system, is a newer and advanced system as compared to the US. This is mainly because India didn’t have a legacy when we went online in the 1990s. We have depositories like NSDL and CDSL where we hold demat accounts that remain unaffected even if a brokerage firm goes into trouble. In the US all securities are essentially held in book or street name with the respective brokers, what they call a “books and records system”. This means the securities are all held by brokers. This also allows the brokerage firm in the US to lend these securities to people looking to short stocks or borrow for various trading strategies and earn an additional source of income (Unlike India, borrowing stocks to short is extremely popular in the US). The earning potential for these stocks held by the broker is typically based on the number of people wanting to short the stock. For example, early this year, when Marijuana stocks were moving wildly, there were periods of time where one could earn as much as 100% or more annualized returns just by lending these stocks. Regulations in the US mandate the brokerages to share some of the lending fees with the person who owns the stock, but the entire thing is quite opaque to the customer. Most never get to know how much was earned. In India, brokers can’t lend securities as they sit in the clients’ demat accounts with the depositories. Also, with the new set of regulations that came out on the 1st of Oct 2019, even securities bought by a customer that are unpaid for, cannot be pledged. Also, India does not have an SLB platform where clients can participate directly, and know the exact lending fees being earned. Shorting stocks – India vs the US Indian regulations are far more stringent, well designed, and keep investors’ interest as a priority compared to the US’s capital market regulations. This is also because of fewer legacy issues compared to the <keyword id="123399" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-markets">US markets</keyword>. While some of the exchanges are quite old, all our capital market regulations are quite new and were created after the 1991 capital market reforms. Another reason for lax regulations in the US is the existence of powerful lobbies. A short squeeze or a stock going up forcing shorts to cover their positions by buying back stock which adds even more momentum on the way up can happen to any stock where shorting is allowed. But what we see in some of the stocks like Gamestop, AMC, are glaring loopholes left open by the US regulators. In some of these stocks, the total quantity of stocks shorted (stocks borrowed and sold + using derivatives) is much more than the free float or the total number of shares held publicly. Allowing such large speculative positions is quite ridiculous and a recipe for disaster. While everyone is celebrating retail traders winning over a large hedge fund in this case, it rarely ever plays out this way. Most commonly, retail ends up losing money when there is excessive speculation. In India, we have something called market-wide position limit (MWPL) where the maximum net position allowed in any stock is 20% of free float, both in F&amp;O and in SLB. The maximum allowed per client is 5% of open interest or 1% of total free float. Such position limits ensure that the chances of anomalies that can cause crazy spikes up or down, like what we are currently seeing in some US stocks, reduces significantly. But that said, a lower maximum position limit also comes with its own issues. There have been allegations in India that groups of traders move stocks to ban period (no new positions possible to be added) by buying deep OTM options at very low costs on certain low free float stocks. With no new positions allowed, any spike in the underlying stock price might exacerbate the move by forcing those stuck in a position to cover their shorts, causing a spike in the stock prices. The 5% OI on individual holdings makes this tougher to execute, and there are regulations to punish people who act in concert. Should shorting a stock be allowed at all? This is a philosophical question, and there are both for and against arguments to be made. I am for it because it enables better price discovery of a stock. There have been many occasions where short-sellers have identified potential frauds and ensured that such stock prices don’t go up. Additionally, those who hold short positions usually come to the rescue when there is a free fall in price, and there is no demand to buy a stock. A short position profit-booking by buying back the stock tends to add some support to the fall, reducing volatility. The flipside with shorting is that promoters of listed businesses have to also keep a much closer watch on the stock price. Apart from large short traders, it is possible to have competitors of a company trying to hurt the business by attempting to force the stock price down.

The founder of India’s largest broking firm argues that Gamestop-like chaos would never happen in India

<keyword id="3265600" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shree-Sai-Spaces-Creations">Shree Sai Spaces Creations</keyword> and <keyword id="1444395" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wasankar-Wealth-Management">Wasankar Wealth management</keyword> has come under <keyword id="35210" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="sebi">SEBI</keyword> scanner for violating <keyword id="6357264" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="capital-market">capital market</keyword> norms. SEBI has ordered attachment of bank accounts, demat accounts and mutual fund folios. 

	The move is part of Sebi's efforts to recover dues worth over Rs 50 crore collectively from both the firms. 
 

	The regulator has ordered attachment of bank accounts, demat accounts and MF folios of Shree Sai Spaces Creations to recover Rs 39,22,03,162 due to the investors, whereas Wasankar Wealth management owes Rs 12,89,01,000. 
 

	The pending dues include fine imposed on them along with interest, charges, expenses and other costs. 
 

	The attachment order comes after the firms violated various capital market norms and also failed to comply with Sebi's earlier directive to refund investors' money along with interests. 
 

	While Shree Sai Spaces Creations raised money from public through 'collective investment schemes' (CIS) without getting regulatory approval, Wasankar Wealth management mobilised funds from 228 investors by issuing preference shares without complying with the public issue norms. 
 

	In two separate orders, Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has directed banks to attach all accounts including lockers held by the two companies and their directors. 
 

	Similarly, the regulator has directed depositories - NSDL and CDSL - to attach all demat accounts of the defaulters. 
 

	The watchdog has also asked for various details of the accounts held by the firms, including account statements.
 

	The markets regulator has been given powers to attach properties and bank accounts, among other things, of persons and entities which have failed to comply with directions involving payment of penalties and other dues.

When you are transferring shares, you are essentially transferring your ownership of such stocks to them, and thus, you need to inform your DP and depository of the same. At present, there are only 2 depositories present in the country, namely NSDL and CDSL. You can submit this DIS both online and offline. If you have more than one siblings you wish to transfer shares to, remember to use separate DIS for each recipient's account. Once you initiate the transfer, your broker will send an email and SMS to the recipient, who will have 7 days to accept this. But remember, once you've transferred these shares, there is no provision to revoke this transfer. Demat account additions weaken, well below FY22 average

Markets regulator <keyword id="35210" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sebi" source="Orion">Sebi</keyword> on Wednesday ordered defreezing of bank accounts as well as share and <keyword id="3819958" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-fund-holdings" source="Orion">mutual fund holdings</keyword> of <keyword id="128581" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rana-kapoor" source="Orion">Rana Kapoor</keyword>, former MD and CEO of <keyword id="45660" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="yes-bank" source="Orion">Yes Bank</keyword>. Kapoor is currently in judicial custody after being arrested in March 2020 in the alleged Yes Bank fraud case. The regulator, in March, had attached bank accounts, share and mutual fund holdings of Kapoor to recover dues of over Rs 1 crore. The decision was taken after Kapoor failed to pay the fine imposed on him. Sebi, in September 2020, had levied a fine of Rs 1 crore on Kapoor for not making disclosures regarding a transaction of Morgan Credit, which was an unlisted promoter entity of Yes Bank. By not disclosing about the transaction to Yes Bank's board of directors, Kapoor created an opaque layer between him and stakeholders and violated the provision of the LODR (Listing Obligations and Dislcosure Requirements) Regulation, Sebi had said in the order. The release order came after Supreme Court, on August 2, stayed the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) order which had upheld a penalty of Rs 1 crore on Kapoor. The stay was subject to payment of Rs 50 lakh by Kapoor. In compliance of Supreme Court's interim order, he has deposited the amount, the regulator noted. Accordingly, Sebi on Wednesday asked all banks in the country and depositories -- NSDL and CDSL-- "to release the bank accounts /locker, demat accounts and mutual fund folios of defaulter (Kapoor) attached if any pursuant to... the notice of attachment". In February, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) issued a demand notice to Kapoor, although he did not pay any dues. The pending dues, totalling Rs 1.04 crore, included an initial fine of Rs 1 crore and an interest of Rs 4.56 lakh and a recovery cost of Rs 1,000. Easing inflation and rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India (<keyword id="30067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="RBI">RBI</keyword>) have encouraged foreign investors to put in more than Rs 21,000 crore in Indian capital markets in this month. 
 
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) had bought shares of Rs 5,992 crore ($977 million) and debt worth 15,336 crore ($2.5 billion) till January 23, making total investments worth Rs 21,328 crore ($3.45 billion), as per Central Depository Services Ltd (CDSL) data. 
 
According to market analysts, the staggering inflow of investments was due to a decline in inflation and rate cut by the central bank. In a move that surprised market participants, the RBI had cut rate by 25 basis points on January 14. 
 
Moreover, foreign investors are also banking on the country’s capital markets on the likelihood of further rate cuts. 
 
The net investment by foreign investors into the debt markets was Rs 1.16 lakh crore in 2014. The foreign investments in equities were Rs 98,150 crore. The total net investment by foreign investors was Rs 2.58 lakh crore last year.
