"It's just crazy."<a target="_blank" href="https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/cache/digpub/housing/bloc-2a.html?lang=en">Eurostat</a> notes that house prices in Croatia have consistently climbed over the past decade. The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/buy-short-term-rental-property-investing-strategy-markets-good-investment-2023-12">money that can be made from short-term rentals</a> also drives up the price of buying vacant properties."What needs to be done in Croatia is to increase the housing supply," said Brkan.But in parts of Dubrovnik, Vukovic explained, that's not feasible."We cannot expand," the tour guide said. "It's a small city protected by UNESCO, and the price has skyrocketed because somebody always wants to buy real estate in Dubrovnik."<div type="image" title="Dubrovnik, viewed from the Old Town's walls." height="4284" width="5712" msid="110390905" hostid="261"></div>For Josip Crncevic, 34, prices feel far out of reach."I always like to tell my guests on the tour that, right now, it will probably take two lifetimes to buy something within the walls," he said.Even in Dubrovnik's suburbs, Crncevic said homeownership is unattainable for him.For now, he lives in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/living-multigenerational-home-lessons-pateince-openness-death-2024-3">multi-generation</a>, three-story family house about seven miles outside the city.His uncle's family lives on the top floor and his grandmother below, in a setup Crncevic describes as three distinct apartments, each with a private entrance and lock.While it's not the situation he dreamt he'd been in at 34, he said there are some positives.Crncevic enjoys helping his grandmother with daily tasks, though the proximity has posed challenges in the past, especially when it comes to dating."My grandmother is the best CCTV in the area," he said.<h2 id="fd0c4321-4ca5-4d1f-b409-63d7336130f8">Establishing boundaries</h2>Privacy is a recurring issue for many millennials living in similar conditions in Croatia.Marija, a 35-year-old who asked to be referred to only by her first name in order to speak candidly about living with her in-laws, said the decision was born of necessity.Marija and her husband moved into his parents' home in 2019 because they couldn't find <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cheap-homes-apartments-low-rent-scarce-expensive-housing-real-estate-2024-1">affordable rent</a>, and buying was not an option.Although it seemed like a sound financial move, Marija said she now views it as a big mistake."We would like to have some kind of privacy, and not to be interrogated on a daily basis," she said.The biggest problem is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-right-way-to-set-boundaries-with-people-2023-10">establishing boundaries</a> "like not reading our mail and not entering the home without knocking," she added.Sanja Cikato, a 47-year-old who lives with her husband and two teenage children above her mother, said setting those boundaries took patience and perseverance.<div type="image" title="Sanja Cebiric Cikato" height="3024" width="4032" msid="110390908" hostid="261"></div>"It wasn't perfect in the beginning, but later, with time, we simply learned how to live together in this house," she said.Cikato said achieving this required open and honest conversations, but that her mother still occasionally eavesdrops on the couple's quarrels.Despite the difficulties, she said the benefits, such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/childcare-benefits-offered-by-employers-boosts-worker-productivity-retention-2024-3">help with childcare</a>, outweigh the drawbacks.When her children, now 12 and 14, were younger, her <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-couple-live-with-boomer-parents-childcare-help-intergenerational-home-2024-3">mother was a live-in babysitter</a>, enabling Cikato to work longer hours during the tourist season.Diana Marlais, another working parent, echoed this, telling BI that multi-generational living is a life-saver for working parents.<div type="image" title="Bogdan Nicolae Dascalescu, Diana Marlais, their children, and her parents spending the evening together in their home." height="4284" width="5712" msid="110390910" hostid="261"></div>Cikato also said the setup creates a special bond between her mom and her kids, and that she wants to replicate it when her own children are adults."You have to understand that was something really normal before," she said.But Malohodžić, who represents the younger cohort of Croatian millennials, sees it as being "purely economic" rather than a tradition worth upholding.He said he wouldn't choose to live this way if finances weren't such a factor.He wouldn't choose to be in his late 20s and to still "sometimes feel like a teenager."

The AI-powered Video wall will cover and analyse CCTV footage from 70 prisons of UP. The video analytics platform called JARVIS will use data from 700 cameras from UP’s prisons to check for frisking, unauthorised access, crowd analysis, violence, and intrusion detection. “JARVIS is now no longer limited to the realms of science-fiction; we are making intelligent video analytics a reality for India’s police force, starting with the first phase of integration in Uttar Pradesh. We have installed a super video wall in Lucknow that will be powered with our expertise in artificial intelligence. It will analyse live footage from 70 <keyword id="4621045" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="UP-prisons">UP Prisons</keyword> and provide actionable insights to the police forces,” said Atul Rai, co-founder and CEO of Staqu. Staqu, which was founded in 2015, had turned profitable earlier this year and has been working with various state police departments of India. The startup landed its first deal with the Rajasthan police force after the Alwar lynching. After a flurry of successes, police officials started recommending Staqu to others in the force. It has since then gone on to help solve over 1,100 cases for the police forces of Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Telangana. It has raised only one round of funding – $650,000 from Indian Angel Network.

This Indian startup has launched an AI led ‘Video Wall’ for surveillance in India’s prisons

New Delhi, Jul 8 () Auto components major Bharat Forge Ltd on Wednesday said it has launched health risk monitoring system (HRMS), which enables companies and institutions to comply with home ministry guidelines for safe reopening, in collaboration with artificial intelligence startup Blackstraw. HRMS primarily consists of two major components -- a contactless thermal screening system integrated with RFID badge reader and AI algorithms running on surveillance CCTV cameras to monitor and control human behaviour. The contactless thermal screening system with RFID badge reader records temperature of associates at high speed with accuracy and also maintains an automatic daily record of the temperature of every person entering and exiting the premises, the company said in a statement. On the other hand, the AI (artificial intelligence) algorithms running on surveillance CCTV cameras alerts administrators and provides them a dashboard when social distancing norms are not met or if an employee is not wearing a face mask. These alerts and dashboards are then reviewed to drive sustainable behaviour change across the enterprise, it added. Commenting on the launch, Bharat Forge Ltd Chairman and Managing Director Baba Kalyani said safety norms have become more stringent with this pandemic. "We have inducted Artificial Intelligence and technological intervention to further safeguard people's health by creating an environment that is anxiety-free and fosters growth. We have developed HRMS to reduce manual interference and keep an effective check on safety norms. This technological approach has ensured maximum safety for employees," he added. Blackstraw CEO Atul Arya said the partnership with Bharat Forge has led to development of a range of video analytic products over the last year. Retailers' losses due to theft, fraud, and other causes totaled nearly $62 billion in 2019, up from nearly $51 billion the previous year, said the survey, which was conducted by the National Retail Federation and the retail consulting firm Appriss Retail.On average, these losses — which retailers refer to as shrink — represented about 1.6% of sales last year, up from 1.4% the previous year. For a company the size of <keyword id="80487" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword>, which generated more than $514 billion in revenue last year, a 1.6% shrink rate would translate into more than $8 billion in losses. Walmart does not publicly disclose its losses due to shrink. "Between an increase in incidents and new ways to steal, shrink is at an all-time high," said Mark Mathews, NRF vice president for research development and industry analysis. "Loss prevention experts are facing unprecedented challenges from individual shoplifters to organized gangs to highly skilled cybercriminals."The survey polled a total of 69 retailers with sales volumes ranging from less than $99 million to more than $50 billion. About a dozen of the survey participants were large chains with more than 2,000 stores. <h2>Retailers are seeing more cases of employee theft and shoplifting, survey finds</h2>Shrink has been driven higher, in part, by an increase in theft by employees and shoplifters, according to the survey.The retailers surveyed reported an average of 560 employee theft apprehensions in 2019, up from 323 the previous year, and 689 shoplifting apprehensions, up from 509 the year before.The average robbery netted about $830 in losses last year, the survey found.Another source of losses is fraud, which can include the use of stolen credit cards, gift card scams, and the return of stolen merchandise for refunds. Many retailers are trying to address rising cases of theft and fraud by using technology, such as artificially intelligent video systems, to identify potential problems. Most of the retailers surveyed use burglar alarms, digital video recorders, and live customer-visible CCTV to combat losses. About 57% of survey respondents said they use point-of-sale analytics systems to combat shrink and 16% said they use video analytics.

The move is an attempt to put a halt to criminal activities in prisons like use of mobile phones, knives and guns. The state is also considering implementing AI-enabled bots to maintain transparency in the education and examination system. "Things are still in the planning stage and we are trying to ensure implementation of the programme for the 2020 board examinations," the government officials told IANS. Last year too, the organization called on the company to sever ties with Trump after his 2005 Access Hollywood video where he spoke to Billy Bush about sexually assaulting women was leaked.Nike ultimately signed a new lease with a non-Trump building nearby, but has not publicly commented on its plans for the current space in Trump Tower. Courage Campaign is renewing the effort, calling Nike's continued association with Trump "completely unacceptable."Nike is not alone either. B<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marketers-are-trying-connect-with-the-coasts-and-middle-america-2017-8">rands are caught in somewhat of a catch-22 situation in today's polarized climate</a>. On one hand, they are expected to tap into the cultural zeitgeist to connect with consumers, while on the other, they must be wary of getting called out for taking positions that will end up alienating their audiences. Since Donald Trump took office, a number of brands including <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/intel-under-armour-brand-boost-after-trump-council-walkout-2017-8">Under Armour</a>, Kellogg's, New Balance, Chobani and L.L. Bean have faced online outrage for being associated with him.According to the Courage Capital, Nike should follow what it did in 2016, when it <a href="http://www.espn.com/boxing/story/_/id/14793389/nike-ends-endorsement-contract-manny-pacquiao">immediately dropped Manny Pacquiao for his abhorrent remarks on same-sex couples</a> and cut ties with Maria Sharapova right away after she announced that she failed a drug test. Business Insider reached out to Nike but has not received comment from the company yet. It appears that the movement is slowly gaining steam online. Nike has been mentioned more than a whopping 1.8 million times online in the past two weeks. While its overall sentiment during this time period is 89.2% positive, social mentions associating Nike with Trump have been on the rise since Wednesday, according to social analytics company, Brandwatch. There have been around 200 mentions of Nike associating it with the hashtag #DumpTrump so far, with 180 of those mentions occurring yesterday.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Brandwatch</div></div></div>It is unlikely, however, that Nike's social conversation will be consumed by outrage due to how large the conversation around the brand generally is, said Kellan Terry, PR brand analyst at Brandwatch. The same thing happened when Adidas sent out an email to marathoners titled, 'You Survived the Boston Marathon,' he said."While people were upset due to the insensitivity of the subject line, Adidas did everything right and apologized for the oversight," he said. "So even though people shared their unfavorable sentiments on social media, Adidas' conversation was so huge, the backlash was negligible."It's also worth noting that Grab Your Wallet, another organization that has been at the forefront of leading boycotts against companies doing business with Trump, is not calling for the same against Nike. "The athletic apparel company's flagship Niketown store in New York City is located in a space owned by Trump, but as with other companies that lease from Trump, it's acknowledged that the lease may have been signed prior to the election," <a href="https://grabyourwallet.org/Boycott%20These%20Companies.html">the group notes on its website.</a> "In addition, the #GrabYourWallet boycott's emphasis is on companies that realize a profit from doing business with the Trump family."But Courage Campaign argues that flagship stores like Niketown are crucial for companies, as they generate considerable foot traffic and high volumes of sales, while increasing the brand's value and reputation through association with similar, or higher valued brands. An advocacy group wants Nike to move its flagship store out of New York City's Trump Tower

The president's manufacturing council of business leaders <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/merck-ceo-kenneth-frazier-resigns-from-trump-manufacturing-council-2017-8">lost three of its members Monday</a>, and a fourth on Tuesday, amid backlash from his failure to strongly condemn the deadly white-supremacist protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, this past weekend. The president <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-second-statement-kkk-neo-nazis-charlottesville-2017-8">offered a stronger condemnation on Monday</a>, but it was too little too late. "For the vast majority of Americans there is a fine boundary between backlash from political correctness and overt hatred," said Paul Marcum, president at integrated marketing agency Truffle Pig. "Charlottesville - and the president's response to it - missed that distinction and ended up on the wrong side of that boundary."In other words, had the executives not walked out and made their stances clear, they would have invariably ended up implying their support of white supremacy in the eyes of the majority, said Marcum. The four executives staging a walkout was them being unwilling to give extreme positions cover, he said.This is in stark contrast to positions that many of them held until very recently. For months, business leaders have rationalized joining Trump's business councils by saying that they were trying help the president make better decisions about American business, even ignoring backlash.Under Armour's Plank, for example, was all praise for Trump in an interview with CNBC's "Fast Money Halftime Report" back in February, despite the brand being literally threatened with "mass burnings" of the company's garments across America. "He wants to build things. He wants to make bold decisions and be really decisive," Plank had said. "I'm a big fan of people that operate in the world of 'publish and iterate' versus 'think, think, think, think, think,' so there's a lot that I respect there."But now, brands seem to be realizing that their advice is largely inconsequential. And that walking out in such a situation is not only the right thing to do, but also good business.The companies in question, according to data crunched by social analytics company Brandwatch, are actually getting a boost in brand perception after their walkouts. Since August 13, Merck has been mentioned more than 344,000 times online, because of departure of its CEO from Trump's American Manufacturing Council. Intel and Under Armour have too been mentioned over 116,000 times and 130,000 times respectively, within the same time period.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Brandwatch</div></div></div>Further, the sentiment around the brands is largely positive, with 88.6% of Intel's and 89.4% of Under Armour's conversation being positive.The only brand with a negative sentiment attached to it is Merck (with 62.9% of its mentions being negative). This is being driven by Trump's ​criticism on Twitter of Kenneth Frazier and how Merck provides "ripoff drugs." The only reason it is negative is because people are criticizing Trump for singling out Merck and Frazier and not the other CEOs, and the algorithm can't decipher that context.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Brandwatch</div></div></div>On the other hand, president Trump's brand seems to have taken a hit. According to Brandwatch, the most used hashtag in the combined conversations around all three companies is #ImpeachTrump. The hashtag has garnered over 33 million impressions.Still, the brands seem to realize that it is ultimately a fragmented and polarizing issue. So even while leaving, it appears that Intel and Under Armour were trying to avoid backlash as much as possible."It certainly appears to be a strategic maneuver from Plank and Krzanich to announce their departure later in the evening when people are looking to relax and stray away from news updates," said Brandwatch's PR data manager, Kellan Terry. However, the chemical weapon itself is difficult to make.Victor Madeira, a senior fellow at The Institute for Statecraft <a href="http://data.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/committeeevidence.svc/evidencedocument/defence-committee/russia-implications-for-uk-defence-and-security/written/31103.html#_ftn1">who testified to Parliament about Russian covert interference in Britain</a>, told Business Insider: "Nerve agents are rare, tightly-controlled synthetic substances that do require specialised knowledge to manufacture, store and use safely."However, that knowledge isn't beyond someone with a good Master's degree in Organic Chemistry, say, and access to a good laboratory. Very difficult, but not impossible."Chemical weapons expert Richard Guthrie <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/mar/07/russian-spy-police-appeal-for-witnesses-as-cobra-meeting-takes-place">similarly told The Guardian</a> that manufacturing nerve agents require "fairly complicated chemistry," and were "essentially impossible" to make at home."Nerve agents, such as sarin or VX, require some fairly complicated chemistry using certain highly reactive chemicals," Guthrie said. "Small quantities could be made in a well-equipped laboratory with an experienced analytical chemist.
