CAT 2021 —  Here’s a list of must-have books for preparation

CAT 2016 candidates have been instructed to not wear shoes and or any closed footwear during the exam. The exam which is a pre-requisite for admission to some 20 Indian Institutes of Managements across the country, besides a host of other management institutes, has issued a set of stringent instructions which are being criticised by students. 
 
If any candidate is found wearing shoes, they will be asked to leave the footwear along with their socks outside the exam hall, as per new rules. 
 
Students on Quora threads are joking around these announcements, saying they feel it's the weirdest set of rules students have ever been asked to follow. 
 
Another announcement that has caught attention is - Candidates with Mehendi laden hands or carrying any other 'cosmetic colours' will not be permitted to take the test. They would not be allowed to digitally scan their fingerprints. The official notification has warned candidates from applying henna at least 5 days prior to the exam. 
 
With two days left to go for one of India's toughest examinations, here's the full list of instructions. Do take a look and spare yourself from any surprises at the exam center: 
 
1. You need to reach the test centre by 7:30 a.m. for forenoon session or by 1:00 p.m. for the afternoon session. 
2. Candidates reaching late (after 8:45 a.m. for forenoon / 2:15 p.m. for afternoon sessions) WILL NOT be permitted inside the test centre. 
3. Only Admit Card and original Photo ID proof will be permitted inside the test hall. 
4. Applicants who have opted for using a scribe MUST also carry the duly filled Scribe Affidavit (available on the CAT website) along with the Photo ID proof (original plus a copy) of the scribe. 
5. Your Admit Card (plus scribe affidavit if applicable) will be collected by the test invigilator and WILL NOT be returned to you. These will be retained by the invigilator. 
6. Any kind of watch, mobile phones, earphones, microphones, pager, health band or any other electronic gadgets, any printed/blank/hand written paper, pencil box, pouch, calculator etc., are NOT allowed inside the test center. 
9. Candidates wearing shoes or any other closed footwear WILL have to leave the footwear (including socks) outside the exam hall. You can wear open footwear like chappals, sandals etc. 
10. On the day of the test, your digital fingerprint scan will be captured. Candidates whose fingerprints cannot be digitally scanned due to reasons like applying Mehendi / henna / any cosmetic colours etc., will not be permitted to take the test. It is strongly recommended that you avoid applying Mehendi on your hands (palm side) for at least 5 days prior to the test.

New rules for CAT exams: Candidates not allowed to wear shoes, those wearing Mehendi will be barred from exams

For fourth year B-Tech student <keyword id="4048862" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="yash-choudhari">Yash Choudhari</keyword>, who hails from Maharashtra, scoring a 100 percentile in the CAT exam meant he would get his big ticket to his dream college - IIM Ahmedabad or Bangalore.

 But it's a different story for another topper <keyword id="13079" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rahul-Sharma">Rahul Sharma</keyword> who hails from Delhi. Sharma didn't want to get into an IIM, because he is already an IIM-Ahmedabad Graduate. That means he was taking the CAT test for the second time, but he had an entirely different purpose to appear for the exams this year. 
 Ask him, and he says he wanted to teach his students how to score well. Having successfully cleared the CAT exam earlier, and graduating from IIM Ahmedabad in 2011, Rahul spends his time counselling and coaching students at <keyword id="70041" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Career-Launcher">Career Launcher</keyword> institute in Delhi. 
 
He took the exam to score a perfect 100, because till he didn't have it to his credit, how would his students consider him to be their idol. 
 
Now, meet another CAT topper from Kolkata- Nilanjan Dutta. He too scored a perfect 100 percentile in CAT 2016. 
 
An XLRI Jamshedhpur passout, Dutta currently works as Business Consultant with an IT Firm. He too topped the CAT exams, but says he has no plans of taking admissions in any of the IIMs. Satisfied with his current job, he says he just appeared for the exam for his self-satisfaction! 
 
Dutta did not taking any coaching on purpose, and wanted to prove his self-worth. "In 2011, I gave my first attempt and scored 99.43 percentile. I just wanted to get 100 percentile for once." 
 
His takeaway from CAT 2016 and a sincere advice to future aspirants is -“A lot of students often end up wasting time over tough questions and become over-ambitious about attempting more questions. Instead, think of it carefully and attempt just the number of questions needed.” 
 
Choudhari, meanwhile, feels that the CAT test has become easier over the years. When he appeared for it back in 2008, "it was still on pen and paper. Now, it has to be taken online". He didn't have too much of an advice for students, but his takeaway was - there is a need for teachers/coaches to keep up with the times.

<keyword id="4046372" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="avidipto-chakraborty">Avidipto Chakraborty</keyword> from Mumbai not only cracked the CAT examination in his first attempt itself, he emerges as this year's topper. Almost 20 students including him have scored 100 percentile in CAT exams this time. 
 
This BITS-Pilani student attributed his success to the number of mock tests he had taken while preparing for the test. 
 
“I completely relied on self-studies and did not take get enrolled in any coaching centres,” The Indian Express quoted Chakraborty, who is working with a private finance services company as an intern. 
 
“I took 86 mock tests for preparation and trusted almost 90 per cent on the analysis,” he said. 
 He kept the balance between his studies and CAT preparation by utilising his free time during weekends. He would attempt three mock tests in two days to gain confidence. This young lad now sees his future in entrepreneurship and aspires to pursue MBA from IIM-Ahmedabad, but not too soon. In his final year, Chakraborty got an offer from his dream company — <keyword id="574638" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="McKinsey-Company">McKinsey &amp; Company</keyword>. 
 
“I may opt for the deferred admission policy and will join the Indian Institute of Management later. I wish to become a consultant,” he said. 
 Meanwhile, Unlike Chakraborty, another topper Yash Choudhari has decided to turn down his job offer if he makes it to <keyword id="19483" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIM-ahmedabad">IIM Ahmedabad</keyword> or IIM Bangalore. He hails from <keyword id="49077" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kolhapur">Kolhapur</keyword> in Maharashtra. 
 
For this fourth year B-Tech student from College of Engineering in Pune, securing a 100 percentile in CAT in his first attempt wasn't a surprising moment. 
 
"I had been preparing for the exam for 7-8 months, and I was expecting a 100 percentile," he said. While solving test series and mocks for the CAT, Choudhari said he would always score the highest in Quant, while Verbal was his weakest area. Ironically, he secured the highest score in the Verbal section, and second highest in Quant. 
 
His word of advice to CAT aspirants is - “No matter how much ever you prepare, CAT will always be a step ahead of you. There is always an element of surprise. Do not try to solve all the questions in a set. It is sheer waste of time." 
 
He concluded saying - "A smart student would know which section is tougher than the previous years' papers. So, don't waste your time. Solve what you know and move ahead..."

CAT 2016 Toppers reveal how they scored 100 percentile in one of India's toughest exam

Such stories have always inspired the young MBA aspirants and encouraged them to pursue their dreams. 
 
This year, there's yet another inspiring story. It is of another visually-challenged student who has made inroads to one of India's best B-School, IIM Kozhikode. 
 We are talking about <keyword id="4057626" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ambati-venkata-prem-swaroop">Ambati Venkata Prem Swaroop</keyword>, who scored 82.87 percentile points in the recently announced CAT-2016 results. 
 
Considering it requires 60 percentile points for People With Disabilities to get through CAT, Swaroop has delivered a splendid performance in one of India's toughest exam. He is expecting calls from other IIMs as well. 
 Swaroop lost his eyesight when he was eight after high fever damaged his optic nerve. Born to parents who run a grocery store in <keyword id="70188" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anantapur">Anantapur</keyword> district, he wanted to improve the home-grown business. Unfazed by lost eyesight, he completed his studies like a regular student and enrolled in Career Launcher, eyeing to get into one of the IIMs. Using a reading software, he would listen to pdf versions of books and academic content. 
 
He finally appeared in CAT this year, only to crack the exam and clinch a place in IIM.

The inspiring story of a visually challenged boy from Andhra Pradesh who is all set to kick-start his IIM journey

Vadodara-based <keyword id="4403629" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Prachi-Sukhwani">Prachi Sukhwani</keyword> (21) is suffering from macular dystrophy, also known as retinal degradation, since class III. Finally, the much awaited CAT Results are out, with 20 candidates securing 100 percentile! What's interesting this time is that all the students who scored 100 percentile marks are engineers. 
 
As per reports, this year the number of applicants rose to 2, 32,434 compared to last year's 2,18,664, as per the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. The exam was conducted in 138 cities across the country and the duration of the exam was of three hours. IIM Bangalore was the convener of CAT 2016.

She scored 98.55 percentile in CAT 2016 while appearing under the category of person with a disability. "My short term goal is to join a company, preferably a multinational. Once I get some experience, I will have my own start-up. But my long term goal is to open an NGO for the blind", she says. The news that she had cracked IIM-A came to her on Monday when she was appearing for her last semester BBA exam. On her daughter's achievement, <keyword id="18473" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prachi">Prachi</keyword>'s father who is a businessman said, "She got calls from all the top three IIMs, IIM-Ahmedabad, IIM-Bangalore and IIM-Kolkata, and appeared for the interviews". Swelling with pride, professor <keyword id="224631" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sharad-Bansal">Sharad Bansal</keyword>, dean of Faculty of Commerce at Prachi's college said, "I have been associated with the BBA programme since its inception in 1993. But this is one of the proudest moments. Prachi deserves special applause for her success despite all odds. Her success is an inspiration for everybody".

Meet Prachi Sukhwani, a 23-year-old with 80 per cent vision loss who has just made it to India's Top B-school

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>Every morning, Anthony Green wakes up in his Manhattan apartment and walks around the block to get a cup of coffee and maybe an omelet from the diner he tells me makes the "best in the East Village, maybe even New York." 
Then from 7:30am to 5 or 6pm, he's sitting at his kitchen table in front of a computer, helping high school kids master the verbal and mathematical skills they'll need if they want a shot at being admitted to the country's best colleges.
Green is one of the premiere SAT and ACT tutors in New York. His company, <a href="http://www.testprepauthority.com/">Test Prep Authority</a>, serves some of the richest kids in America. Using a student's PSAT - the practice exam - as a benchmark, Green promises he can help raise scores an average of 430 points on the SAT (and 7.8 points on the ACT), "higher than any other tutor, class, or program in the country," according to his website. 
That promise seems to be enough for his well-heeled clientele. And for this very small but wealthy minority, money is truly no object. Green charges $1500 for 90 minutes of one-on-one tutoring, and he insists on a minimum of 14 90-minute sessions with very rare exceptions.
What's more, the sessions happen exclusively over Skype. Green's pupils have never stepped foot inside of his eclectically decorated townhouse.
Green, who as a teenager got his own tutor after bombing the PSATs, ultimately scoring in the 99th percentile, got his start in the test-prep industry while a sophomore at Columbia.
A year later, he started his own business, hiring 50 independent tutors to work for him. 
"I had no idea what I was doing," Green admits. "I thought, Hire people who are smart."
But he soon realized that not every genius he hired was able to effectively impart their knowledge to a restless teenager. As it became clear that his company was not always delivering the improvement students and parents were after, Green scaled back his business goals and began focusing on perfecting his own technique.
"I'm not a manager," he acknowledges. 
Fast forward to 2014. Now Green tutors, quite literally, the spawn of the 1%. His students are the offspring of financiers, hedge funders, CEOs, and mostly entrepreneurs. Each student must commit to two weekly sessions and begin 3 months prior to the exam. Demand has been so high, he says, that he often has to turn away new clients, leading some to book his services up to four years in advance.
Green's secret, he told me, is being able to quickly identify a client's weaknesses, a skill for which he relies on intuition.
Could Green really be as good as he claims? SAT tutoring can be had for a fraction of his rates. Not to mention online institutions like <a href="https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra2/rational-expressions/simplifying-rational-alg/e/simplifying_rational_expressions_2">Khan Academy</a>, which offers step-by-step instructions for free. 
Seeking proof of his talents, I ask Green to teach me how to solve a math problem from an SAT practice book. Full disclosure: I am terrible at math. I am, in fact, impressively awful at math.

I point to a problem at random. "Find v in terms of w," it says - and I immediately find myself just as bewildered, if not more so, than I had been during my last high school math class more than 10 years ago. But Green, who at 26 has been an SAT tutor in various capacities for nearly 8 years, doesn't flinch.
"This is where people tend to freak themselves out," he says, showing me various ways in which students tend to work themselves into a panic. 
He tells me to pick a number to substitute for v and test it out on all of the answers. In 5 minutes I have a solution and the correct answer. I try a similar problem on my own, get the correct answer in 3 minutes, and I feel confident I can do it again and again. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>A big part of my success, he says, is that I actually wanted to learn. 
For comparison's sake, I then visit Khan Academy online and search for a problem with a similar level of difficulty: simplifying rational expressions. I click around and land on the following problem, with options on the right-hand side for anyone needing hints.

Flummoxed, I ask for all 5 hints, which just confuse me even more.

Khan Academy offers a video, which I watch in earnest. But then my phone rings, and I answer it. I check my email. I talk to a co-worker. When I come back to the problem, with no confidence that I am actually retaining the information being presented to me, it feels like I'm essentially teaching myself how to do math. The validation from someone who understands is an important component of the learning process, which tends to be lacking when using a service like Khan Academy. 
Clearly having a one-on-one tutor like Green works better for me, not that I can afford him.
Indeed, neither can most students or parents. By cashing in on the anxieties - and disposable income - of an elite clientele, Green is capitalizing on a system that is clearly skewed in favor of those students who already have a tremendous advantage. Far from helping to foster a meritocracy, as many of us would like to believe, schools that base their admissions on standardized testing are tending to reinforce the inequality of American society. 
Not that there's much Green can do about the system as a whole, something he readily admits.
"[The SAT] is a blatant class indicator," Green tells me. "The entire system of standardized tests and higher <keyword id="6355445" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Education">education</keyword> is completely ridiculous and ludicrous. But colleges haven't found any other way to objectively evaluate the merits of a student. You have thousands of students applying to your school, there has to be a way to compare them to one another in terms of math and language and writing skill."
Any objective system like this can and will be gamed, he says, and yes, doing so can be expensive.
"It's a free market economy," he says. "These people find me on their own and they want to work with me and I am happy to work with them. But the system itself is completely broken." 
For those who can't afford his hourly rates, Green has created software students can use on their own. Additionally, he works with <a href="http://www.yesscholars.org/">Young Eisner Scholars (YES)</a>, an organization that helps gifted kids in financially disadvantaged communities, gifting free copies of his software to every child that goes through the YES program. 
I'm still curious about his use of Skype. Isn't it hard to tutor a kid from behind a screen? 
Not at all, he insists. Even through Skype, Green says, he's developed a clear sense of whether a student's full attention is on him or wandering to another open window on their computer, or to their cellphone, or maybe their cat.
If attention is a persistent problem, Green will drop the client. 
"I guarantee I can work with you to improve your scores," he explains, "but if you don't want to be there in the first place and you're shut down to the idea of really attacking the test, then I can't help you."
Green says his favorite students are the ones who have a goal in mind. Unfortunately, that goal is often getting into a specific school. Parents, too, often have their sights set on the Ivy League, preferably Harvard. 
"I can't promise that," he said. "I can promise that with improved scores your college options will absolutely open up."
Green's job will become even harder in 2016, when the SAT returns to a 1600-point test, discarding the essay section that has been part of the College Board's exam since 2006.
"I've spent thousands of hours mastering [the 2400 point] test," he says with a sigh. "But I have time to rework my strategies."
One strategy that's certain to remain is Green's pricing policy. After all, students with wealthy parents tend to have had top-notch educations and therefore be the most likely to succeed. As with so many status items, it's impossible to tell whether Green's services are worth the premium. Does he charge more than his rivals because he's the best? Or is he simply perceived to be the best because he's so expensive? 
Anyone who can answer that one probably deserves a shot at Harvard.
