After working over 30 years at a telephone company, he retired at 60 — five years before he intended — to care for her.The couple, who live in Burlington, New Jersey, have <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boomer-lives-on-social-security-struggles-financially-feels-lonely-retirement-2024-9">struggled financially</a> over the last few years. Though they bring in about $5,000 a month in retirement income before taxes, much of that goes toward <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retirement-boomer-cancer-social-security-savings-disability-401k-groceries-inflation-2024-8">medical bills</a>, high property taxes, and costly insurance payments. They're left with little at the end of each month, though Papalia said they're not in dire straits."Do we have money in the bank? Yes. Is it a lot of money? No," Papalia told Business Insider.Many Americans told BI they've struggled to prepare financially for the unexpected, such as a sudden <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retirement-savings-medical-costs-baby-boomers-paying-for-cancer-treatment-2024-9">health emergency</a> or death in the family. As Americans increasingly rely on Social Security and other retirement income to get by, high medical expenses could throw years of retirement planning out of balance.<h2 id="48c12f20-820c-43e2-bbd9-05b8bc4fa53a">Retiring early to be his wife's caretaker</h2>Papalia had a goal to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-xers-financial-independence-retire-early-fire-started-saving-late-2024-6">retire</a> in 2015 at age 65 so he could receive Social Security benefits and have enough saved that money wouldn't be a huge issue. However, in 2010, he retired to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sandwich-generation-caregiving-minimum-wage-2024-5">care for his wife</a> full-time, taking a buyout from his company that lasted until 2014.Marie, a lifelong <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/diet-and-exercise-strategies-for-lower-blood-sugar-reverse-type-2-diabetes-2024-5">diabetic</a>, had dealt with medical issues throughout her life, including vision loss in her right eye, static hypertension, and low blood sugar. She received a prosthetic eye after she experienced retinal damage.Marie's medical care was expensive, and they also cared for two dogs, both of whom had costly medical issues.Marie needed around-the-clock care, and he felt it was worth the financial sacrifice of retiring early to spend every hour with her to ensure she would stay as healthy as possible. She had a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cardiologist-shares-easy-way-avoid-biggest-calorie-heart-health-mistake-2024-6">heart attack</a> in 2012 that forced them to pause their plans to sell their New Jersey house to move to a lower-cost-of-living area in Pennsylvania.In 2014, Marie underwent open heart surgery after doctors discovered a 95% blockage of her heart's main artery. Papalia said that year was when finances became much tighter — he noted Marie took eight or nine prescriptions each day. She's struggled to walk over the last few years and has relied on a wheelchair."I know for a fact that when I look at my wallet at the end of the day now, it's a difference between night and day," Papalia said, comparing finances to 2010.<h2 id="a16b531b-84e1-4e9c-9d53-c3093053c7d6">Scraping by and making sacrifices</h2>Papalia receives $2,132 a month in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boomer-living-on-social-security-retirement-savings-401k-bus-driver-2024-7">Social Security</a> before taxes and insurance and $1,900 from his pension, while Marie gets $1,113 a month from Social Security. Though Papalia said they stayed afloat, some months were particularly tight.Medications could cost $60 to $70 each week, and hospital bills add up to a few hundred dollars every few months, meaning well over 10% of their income goes toward Marie's medical costs. Papalia said his health is stable, though he has acid reflux, neuropathy, and an irregular heartbeat, for which he takes some medications."Without insurance, I'd be living underneath a bridge," Papalia said. "If you don't have insurance, you're playing with fire."They shifted their grocery shopping to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retired-boomer-social-security-roommates-medicare-living-costs-washington-ohio-2024-9">essentials</a> at cheaper stores, and with food inflation over the last few years, they've been even more methodical about purchases. He estimates they spend under $100 on groceries weekly, though they occasionally order takeout. Papalia said pandemic-era stimulus checks helped them afford necessities."We're constantly going to doctors for everything you might imagine: clogged arteries, eye surgery, a situation where she lost toes off her left foot," Papalia said, noting that though they get Medicare, the cost of deductibles and copays adds up.They pay over $10,000 in property taxes each year, and they anticipate that will continue increasing. Their heating bill runs them nearly $300 monthly, while they pay upward of $40 monthly on life insurance. They also pay nearly $300 for car and homeowners insurance a month.Papalia said it's only a matter of time before something goes wrong with the house, driving them into the red. A few years ago, he was given an estimate of $11,000 to fix his roof, but because the original roofing was not up to building codes, it became a $36,000 payment that they won't pay off until 2030."It's a struggle every day, and something's going to pop," Papalia said.Papalia said <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retirement-boomer-couple-cant-survive-social-security-pension-living-costs-2024-8">finances were so tight</a> he took out a reverse mortgage on the house, a loan for older Americans to borrow money against their home's equity and supplement their Social Security.He said they rotate between 30 credit cards for various purchases to limit their budget, get rewards, and keep balances on each card low to maintain their credit.Papalia said he's looked into getting a part-time job, though he said he can rarely leave the house given Marie's conditions. Hiring a caretaker would be too expensive, Papalia said."We're just taking it one day at a time," Papalia said. A boomer said he's struggling to survive on Social Security after retiring early to care full-time for his wife

Strategic and financial sponsors have shown interest to acquire <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=hospital" target="_blank">multi-speciality hospital</a> chain <keyword id="467007" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Care-Hospitals">CARE Hospitals</keyword> from its current <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=private+equity" target="_blank">private equity</a> owners Advent International. 
 The front-runners to acquire Hyderabad-headquartered hospital chain are <keyword id="34499" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="private-equity">private equity</keyword> group Abraaj, and a consortium of PD Hinduja Hospital, Everstone Group and even South African healthcare chain Netcare and Bain Capital, Singapore's Temasek Holdings and Baring Private Equity Asia. 
 
They have submitted offers and the final negotiations are underway with the CARE Hospitals Group, which is owned and managed by Quality CARE India Ltd and runs 17 hospitals across nine cities in India. 
 
Sources told Economic Times that majority of the offers have valued the chainbetween Rs 1500 crore - Rs 1800 crore inclusive of its debt. 
CARE Hospitals’ founders developed Asia’s first indigenous <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=coronary" target="_blank">coronary stent</a>. The chain plans to add 300 to 400 beds over the next 18 months. 
 
However, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=healthcare+industry" target="_blank">healthcare industry</a> experts have a mixed reaction about the prospects of CARE. 
 
"It is a fully juiced out asset and doesn't throw out cash like a Medanta or Apollo. It is also largely based in Tier II cities and have smaller operations while its flagship property is in Hyderabad, a fiercely competitive market," an investment banker, following this trade, told ET. 
 
As per Barclays, Indian healthcare market has significant long-term growth potential sharing similar growth drivers as other key regional markets.

CARE Hospitals get buyout offer of Rs 1,800 crore from PE majors

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Tens of thousands of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/airlines">airline</a> workers are being <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/covid-layoffs">furloughed</a> as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/cares-act">CARES Act</a> funding requirements have expired.</li><li>A last-minute funding extension — which workers and labor groups insist would have been a jobs program, rather than a bailout — never materialized.</li><li>Business Insider spoke with airline employees facing prolonged unemployment in a faltering economy, plus a loss of health coverage during a global <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/coronavirus">pandemic</a>. Despite the current stress and uncertainty, most say they'd go back to the airline life in a heartbeat.</li></ul>In five years as a <keyword id="158290" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Flight-attendant">flight attendant</keyword>, Tiana Davenport has seen the world, ferrying passengers from San Francisco to Singapore, Paris, Frankfurt, and Tokyo, and has overcome unexpected life-threatening medical conditions. But this week Davenport finds herself grounded, along with tens of thousands of fellow airline workers.US <keyword id="44023" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="airlines">airlines</keyword> began the process of furloughing 32,000 employees on Thursday, as protections dictated by the <keyword id="9073299" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cares-act">CARES Act</keyword> expired, victims of the worst crisis in the industry's history.As travel demand fell as much as 97% early in the pandemic, Congress offered aid to airline workers through a $25 billion payroll support program (PSP) as part of the CARES Act. In exchange for the payroll aid and other loans, airlines agreed to not furlough or lay off workers through at least September 30. (Other conditions included prohibitions on stock buybacks and shareholder dividends, as well as caps on executive pay.)That was in March, when airlines and lawmakers had reason to believe the pandemic would be largely under control by the fall, with air travel headed toward a recovery. But as outbreaks early in the summer showed that <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> was anything but beaten, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airlines-thanksgiving-travel-coronavirus-pandemic-2020-9">a modest uptick in demand flattened</a>, stalling at roughly 40% of 2019 levels.As their finances deteriorated, airlines started planning to lay off or furlough huge numbers of employees come October 1. They and employee unions have campaigned for an extension of the PSP, either on its own or as part of a larger stimulus package. Despite bipartisan support in both chambers of Congress, along with the White House, no agreement has been reached. And now, time has run out.Although tens of thousands of airline workers nationwide have taken buyouts, early retirement packages, and unpaid leaves, involuntary <keyword id="1644705" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="furloughs">furloughs</keyword> kicked in on Thursday. Roughly <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-airlines-furloughs-layoffs-coronavirus-2020-8">19,000 staff at American Airlines are losing their jobs</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/united-airlines-pilots-avoid-furlough-flight-attendants-workers-jobs-2020-9">along with 13,000 at United</a> and hundreds each at Alaska Airlines, Allegiant, Hawaiian, and Spirit. Under collective bargaining agreements, furloughed airline workers are given the option to return to their jobs before the carriers hire new replacements once demand improves.<keyword id="394906" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="flight-attendants">Flight attendants</keyword> make up the largest share of those furloughed, with gate agents baggage handlers, maintenance technicians, and others also affected. The men and women doing the flying <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/united-airlines-pilots-avoid-furlough-flight-attendants-workers-jobs-2020-9">have avoided the worst of the pain</a>: Delta is s<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/delta-furloughs-pilots-flight-attendants-coronavirus-2020-9">et to furlough 1,900 pilots on November 1</a>, while <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/southwest-airlines-cares-act-loan-decline-demand-2020-8">Southwest said it has raised enough cash</a> to avoid furloughs until 2021.<h2>A loss of health coverage, livelihoods, and a special way of life</h2>As they lose their jobs, airline workers have been frustrated by what they see as unfair vitriol directed at airlines and bailouts, despite the effects the pandemic has had on regular workers. While airlines face ire over accepting what has been characterized as "bailout" money for a wealthy industry, unions and workers insist that the CARES Act funding was more akin to a jobs program."This is real people moving their stuff into their cars and trying to figure out how to survive," Association of Flight Attendants-CWA president Sara Nelson said on Capitol Hill last week."We're actual people, this is our life," said Davenport, a union member who works for United. "I read some of the comments online, with how upset people are, about bailouts and stock buybacks. Just know that's not us making those decisions, we're real people who work with these airlines."Davenport, like many workers, is especially worried about losing her health insurance during a pandemic. In 2019, the 30-year-old suffered a spontaneous collapsed lung while working a flight from Frankfurt to San Francisco. During a surgery to prevent a reoccurrence, doctors discovered endometriosis developing in a way that could cause further breathing problems.Davenport paid just $370 out-of-pocket for multiple hospitalizations and surgeries, she said, and currently receives a monthly injection at no cost that keeps her condition at bay. Now, she's looking at up to $3,000 per month just for for that preventative treatment."I work out, I eat pretty healthy," Davenport said. "And I have health issues now that I never thought I'd have.""<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/disney-layoffs-theme-parks-disneyland-disneyworld-2020-9">It's not just travel</a>, it's across all industries," she said. "There are millions of people that are struggling, just have a little compassion."While cyclical downturns are not unusual for the airline industry, what makes this one especially painful is the fact that the larger economy and job market are so badly affected, too. David Ishmael, another United flight attendant represented by the AFA, was planning on eventually pursuing a pilots license, ideally through United's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/united-airlines-pilot-flight-school-shortage-2020-2">in-house flight training program</a>. But he doesn't expect to be able to afford it while furloughed — especially if he can't find another job with comparable pay."Regardless of qualifications, the job market overall is very suppressed," he said. "It's still very difficult to find other employment. People just aren't hiring."Many workers plan to tread water as the pandemic drags on, but hope to return to the skies the second the pandemic is over. "I love this job, I don't know what else there is to say," said an American Airlines flight attendant, who plans to apply for unemployment and try to pick up shifts with Uber and DoorDash, as well as continue regular work with the Air Force Reserve. "I don't want to do anything else.""I'm going to finish the degree I started before I left for this job," said another furloughed American Airlines employee, who said she plans to pursue a master's once she finishes her remaining few college credits. "I'll be ready whenever we are called back. Even though we are experiencing tough times, I still love what I do. I could never be as happy working a 9-5 as I am in the skies."<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-airlines-worker-buyout-layoffs-2020-5">Being part of an airline in any capacity is unlike anything industry</a>, say the hundreds of thousands who work for the nation's air carriers. Even workers who are not part of flight crews — baggage handlers, corporate employees, and the like — tend to have generous free (or cheap) travel benefits. For flight attendants and pilots, especially, having the chance to take advantage of flexible scheduling and fun layovers beats any alternative."People will say 'oh, but what's the point, you're only in that country for 24 hours.' And I'll say yeah, but it's not going to be the last time," Davenport said about how she tries to schedule layovers. "I just love it."

The Taliban is murdering Afghan soldiers by the dozen daily.But now comes <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">news</keyword> that President Trump may want to accelerate the US withdrawal, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-afghanistan-pullout-before-election-2020-5">bring all US personnel home by November</a>. Defense Department officials are briefing him soon with a choice of five options for winding down the war. Tea-leaf reading suggests Trump wants a preelection exit, and the Pentagon and Senate allies are leaking that news to prompt a backlash that will slow the exit till May 2021. Afghan war hawk Sen. Lindsey Graham, right on cue, has called the plan for an early exit "horrendous."Trump undoubtedly believes bringing everyone home will be a fine campaign bauble, and maybe that's the only reason he's pushing for a quick pullout. But he's also right that the sooner the better. For 19 years, the generals and their hawkish pals in Congress have been telling us a delusional story about a war that could be won, direly warning of regional destabilization and global terrorism if we left Afghanistan.But it's long past time to face the fact that we have lost the war. We cannot defeat the Taliban. This is a painful admission, since so many Americans fought so well and so nobly to try to protect the country from the Taliban's theocratic thugs. It's even worse because we also know that many Afghan allies who helped us will suffer at the hands of the Taliban when we leave. And the region may well become more unstable.But we can't fall victim to the <a href="https://www.behavioraleconomics.com/resources/mini-encyclopedia-of-be/sunk-cost-fallacy/">sunk-cost fallacy.</a> The fact that we've been there 19 years, lost 2,300 service members, spent trillions, and haven't achieved our goal shouldn't make us want to stay longer. The sight of two people strapped to the top of a missile and hurled into the terrifying blackness of space, the engineering required to build such machines, the mathematics required to launch the Crew Dragon capsule exactly into the path of the ISS: These dazzle and exhilarate. It is human ingenuity and courage at their most glorious.And yet. And yet.Here we are, 63 years in the space age and crewed spaceflight seems oddly pointless. Our deep-space probes and telescopes are miracles that have brought us flybys of planets and glimpses of the beginning of the universe. Our satellites have given us instantaneous communication and inch-perfect mapping, and the extraordinary benefits of those technologies.But crewed spaceflight has brought us only imagination and inspiration. We haven't figured out how to fly humans into space in a way that's safe, useful, and cost-efficient. Space is too dangerous for humans, and it's hideously expensive merely to keep a tiny number of people in orbit just outside the atmosphere. The ISS rattles along, the galaxy's most expensive rat maze, staffed by astronauts whose main job is just keeping the thing from falling apart. And the risks and costs and dangers just get higher the farther we go. We haven't gone back to the moon because it's not clear what we would do there, and the moon dust is so dangerous that we almost certainly couldn't live permanently there. Mars is the next closest option, yet it's too far away. We lost the war in Afghanistan — time to come home

Atlantic City has seen its luck turn since the high times of 2007, when guests ordered <a href="http://www.gadling.com/2007/02/28/110-hamburger-try-a-1-000-brownie/">$1,000 brownies</a> topped with gold flakes and gaming revenues flooded city coffers. Today, the city's <a href="http://www.bizjournals.com/newyork/news/2013/11/04/atlantic-city-casinos-seek-shrinking-tax.html">tax base is shrinking</a>, as resort properties lose their value and gamblers seek new options in neighboring states. Total gaming revenue <a href="http://www.nj.com/business/index.ssf/2014/01/ac_casino_revenue_dips_below_3_billion_online_bets_brings_in_8_million_in_five_weeks.html">fell below $3 billion</a> last year for the first time in 22 years. 
One bright spot in this gloom is the 11-year-old Borgata Hotel Casino &amp; Spa, co-owned by Boyd Gaming and MGM Resorts.
While city gaming revenue fell 6.2% last year, the Borgata saw a 0.7% increase. It also had the most gaming revenue at $617 million, claiming one of every five dollar gambled in the city.
"I don't know what it is about this place," Fernando Commandari, 52, said while sitting at a Borgata blackjack table in early February. "It always feels current, which is nice. The staff are amazing and the service is great. But why do I come here over the Revel? I honestly can't say." 
Andrew Zarnett, managing director of Deutsche Bank, offered a few reasons in an <a href="http://bigstory.ap.org/article/10-years-later-borgata-still-dominates-nj-casinos">interview with the AP</a>: "Borgata was successful thanks to a great location, well-executed design and talented management. Helping its success was a large investment in market research from the outset of development, which helped management understand the customer and implement a well-formulated plan."
The well-formulated plan included innovations like the popular "Borgata Babes" servers, more sophisticated slot machines, celebrity chef restaurants by Bobby Flay and Wolfgang Puck, a popular non-gambling sister hotel called The Water Club, constant renovations, and an early foray into online gambling (it now claims 41% of the local market).

When we mention the Borgata's success, the mayor smiled and said, "Yes, if only I had five more like it."
The mayor has a refined energy that's impossible to miss. In our brief visit, he outlined plans for a new Atlantic City facing the prospect of fading casino revenue. This includes expanding services in the health care field and the education sector with an eye to creating as many new, non-hospitality jobs as possible. 
"I'm optimistic," he said. "I see great things for Atlantic City, I really do." 
But it's easy to see how things could get worse before they get better.
Many casinos are on shaky ground or worse, with the Atlantic Club Casino Hotel closing in January and the Revel Casino only recently out of bankruptcy and reported to be looking for a buyout.
With more than half the mortgages in the area underwater, 30% of residents below the poverty line, and double-digit unemployment, there are fears that <a href="http://www.myfoxny.com/story/24280415/the-next-detroit-atlantic-city-and-las-vegas-facing-catastrophic-collapse">Atlantic City could become the next Detroit</a>.
At least there's the Borgata.
