But deep inside that report, there was a telling commentary on what has been unfolding in India in the last few weeks. "There is nothing good, in our view, that can be said about the Citizen Act and National Citizens Register. The economic impact is our main interest," the report said slamming the Narendra Modi government's move to push through <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blindspot-to-backlash-indias-modi-and-party-misread-the-mood-2019-12?IR=T" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">the Citizenship Amendment Act</a> (CAA), which has sparked protests across the country— many of which have been violent.  The public outrage against the Act is based on the understanding that, combined with the proposed National Register for Citizens, the CAA will be used to discriminate against the Muslims in the country.  The telling signs of further slowdown, according to CLSA, are the sharp drops seen in the import of capital goods and bank credit. The import of capital goods, which increase when businesses are making fresh investments, have shrank 10% in November 2019, a "steepening downtrend signalling a sustained investment downswing," according to the report.  Meanwhile, 186 people have been injured while 10 have died in the violence in northeast Delhi which erupted on Sunday, according to <keyword id="6358992" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Police">Delhi Police</keyword> spokesperson and the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mandeep Singh Randhawa.  The Delhi Police also confirmed that 11 first information reports (FIR) have been registered and several arrests have been made.  Leaders of the ruling dispensation at the Centre, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had threatened violence even before the clashes erupted. A day later, a 33-year old man by the name Sharukh, from the camp protesting the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, opened fire on a policeman. Another policeman, 42-year old Rattan Lal succumbed to the injuries from stone pelting as the tension escalated.

"We are deeply disturbed and concerned about what &amp; why is happening in Delhi. We are watching it. In our country there is no place for violence. It closed at $0.80 HKD, down from $0.98 at opening bell. News of Country Garden's trading suspension fuelled a sell-off in the wider property index, raising concerns that the sector's multi-year liquidity crisis is about to proliferate. As the firm edges towards a potential default, the chances of restructuring increase, with investment bank CICC International Capital Corp. exploring options to extend the lifespan of its Panda bonds, which are closest to their maturity dates, according to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2023-08-14/country-garden-what-the-china-developer-s-restructuring-would-look-like" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bloomberg</a>. And sometimes to see big rewards, companies have to take risks.For example, Ye was always a "wild card," but when Adidas began working with him, it was a deal that paid off – with the Yeezy brand drawing in an estimated $1 billion to $2 billion in annual sales, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Business/cost-adidas-cutting-ties-kanye-west/story?id=92065799#:~:text=The%20Yeezy%20line%20accounts%20for,Evercore%20ISI%20analyst%20Omar%20Saad.">ABC News reported</a>. No. But he brought some of the allure and some of the danger with him that he infused into the Yeezy brand." When brands find celebrities that share their values, it can lead to greater exposure and business success, Martha Sullivan, the president of Provenance Hill Consulting and a consultant for The Family Business Consulting Group, told Insider. "By working with a celebrity or a high-profile influencer, you're going be able to tap into their channel, their audience, their following, and the vibe that they have," Sullivan said. "And so that gives you the opportunity for the growth of your client or customer base." <h2>But it takes time to cut ties even with a strong contract</h2>If a business is entering into a relationship with a celebrity or influencer, they need to ensure they have strong legal counsel and a thorough contract, Sullivan said. If the celebrity starts making public comments that are "inconsistent with the brand," a strong contract will have provisions that allow for the termination of the deal, she added. But, Monson said, even with the best contract, when a relationship is associated with a product and accounts for a huge portion of a company's business — the way Yeezy does for Adidas — cutting ties is not easy. When Ye's former sister-in-law Kendall Jenner was embroiled in controversy over a video advertisement for Pepsi, it was simple for the beverage brand to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pepsi-pulls-kendall-jenner-ad-2017-4">pull the ad</a>, Monson said. The rating agency <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-gets-downgraded-at-moodys-2018-3">lowered Tesla's corporate rating one notch</a> to B3, citing a "significant shortfall" in Model 3 production, Reuters says. It also slashed the car maker's junk bond rating to Caa1, just one notch above default.The downgrade comes as Tesla has been grappling with "production hell" for its Model 3 vehicle. The company initially promised the production of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/teslas-model-3-launch-deliveries-begin-photos-features-2017-7">20,000 Model 3 vehicles per month by December 2017</a>, but only delivered 1,550 in the entire fourth quarter of 2017. Cofounder Mamoon Hamid left suddenly last August to join Kleiner Perkins Caufield &amp; Byers. The firm's third cofounder Ted Maidenberg appears to be tapping out, as well. He remains at Social Capital as a board partner but did not invest in the latest fund, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-06-16/another-social-capital-partner-departs-venture-capital-firm">Bloomberg</a> reported.In a Medium post titled, "Appetite for Change," Palihapitiya, the firm's CEO and formerly an early Facebook executive, describes lessons learned tech investing.Palihapitiya brought on Bates and Mezvinsky, in part, to help raise and lead a large growth fund that would invest both in existing and promising new Social Capital portfolio companies. The firm also explored starting a "<a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/wealth/invest/credit-funds-can-help-generate-higher-returns/articleshow/51986801.cms">credit fund</a>," which invests in relatively risky corporate bonds to help generate higher returns to use for investing. And it has been a big proponent of blank-check, special purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs. It <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chamath-palihapitiya-raises-600-million-ipo-social-capital-hedosophia-holdings">raised $600 million in a 2017 IPO</a> for a SPAC firm named Hedosophia with the intent of using that cash to buy well-performing private tech companies. "Friends and mentors told me blindly scaling our asset base would distract me. Focus on technology, they said, and stick to what makes you unique vs [sic] what makes you the same," Palihapitiya said. "I initially thought they were wrong."The legendary investor, who made early bets on companies such as Box, Slack, and SurveyMonkey, has changed his mind - or his "appetite.""I have realized that excellence doesn't necessarily come from the novelty of a constant stream of new things, but rather focus and refined repetition of the things that are at the very core of our organization," Palihapitiya said.Social Capital is already experimenting with a new tool that <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2018-05-01/white-male-vcs-tend-to-fund-white-male-entrepreneurs-could-robots-do-better">uses an algorithm to invest in startups</a>. Companies apply through a glorified Google Form and let the AI decide whether or not they're worth backing. To do this, we've consistently challenged ourselves to explore what the future might look like. It seemed like a reasonable path in the era of Softbank's Vision Fund and Sequoia's rumored mega-fund. To execute this, I brought on two leaders: Marc Mezvinsky as Vice Chairman to lead our capital formation efforts, and Tony Bates as CEO of Social Capital Growth. We also explored what a Credit fund that could provide an entrepreneur with less dilutive forms of capital would look like.We felt emboldened to try all of this because of our track record in venture capital. Our venture capital funds are at the top of their class and there is little doubt that some of the startups we have backed will redefine this current generation of tech companies. If there was any time to pursue these new strategies, it was, in my opinion, now.Friends and mentors told me blindly scaling our asset base would distract me. Focus on technology, they said, and stick to what makes you unique vs what makes you the same.I initially thought they were wrong. And so we embarked on trying to do both: build great products and scale assets across multiple new funds, all at the same time. It's this last factor that is hard. Ironically, we tell our entrepreneurs all the time to do one thing really well, but found ourselves not following our own advice.As I internalized this and we got closer to closing some of these new strategies, my gut was telling me to go back to our core. It took some time, but we decided not to pursue the Credit effort, and also to refine our Growth strategy to largely focus on later stage investments in some of our best portfolio companies rather than generically compete in increasingly excessive growth-stage auctions.Refining our Growth strategy to what will be our second Opportunities fund means there is little point in having a separate Growth leadership team, because doubling down on proven winners from our venture funds is best carried out by our venture partners, since they know these remarkable companies and their founders better than anyone. As such, with this shift, the scope and roles for Marc and Tony became very limited compared to what they and I had originally thought, and we collectively came to the conclusion that it makes sense for them to transition to new challenges and opportunities outside of Social Capital, although we're exploring ways they can still be involved in our future success as Board Partners or advisers.It is tough to part ways with great colleagues like Marc and Tony. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with them, and know they'll go on to do great things - they are A+ and I'm sure we will work together again in the future.For the foreseeable future, we will stick to what we are truly passionate about: high-touch venture investments and building out our Platform that provides these entrepreneurs with tools and software to build better companies.The good news is that what we are passionate about is also what we are best at. It's known for its well-designed office space, which it leases itself and then rents out to customers like startups and, increasingly, big corporate clients.As WeWork prepares to go public, there's increasing scrutiny on it that can <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wework-not-close-to-profitable-loses-hundreds-thousands-every-hour-2019-7">be boiled down to three major concerns</a>: the stability of its model (pairing long-term office leases with short-term occupants and what that might look like during a downturn), its categorization (is it a tech or real-estate company?), <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-wework-ceo-adam-neumann-spends-his-money-real-estate-2019-7">and the wild card that is its CEO, Adam Neumann</a>.This week, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/weworks-top-landlords-real-estate-private-equity-2019-7">we did a deep dive on the company's top landlords</a>, which until now have largely avoided media scrutiny. If the economy were to turn, it would mean that some of its tenants may choose not to renew their leases (or negotiate lower rent), while WeWork would still owe payments to its own landlords. WeWork's financials, in particular, are also giving some prospective IPO investors pause. The company is hemorrhaging money: $219,000 every hour of every day during the 12 months leading up to March, according to the <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/0e426c90-8c45-11e9-a1c1-51bf8f989972">Financial Times</a>.
