Bengaluru Police arrests 60 more people 'for their role in riots'

Bengaluru, The Karnataka government would soon use intensive care units (ICUs) built in mobile modular containers to facilitate <keyword id="6355989" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="treatment">treatment</keyword> of COVID-19 patients in this tech city, a Minister said on Sunday. "On a pilot basis, 10 modular container ICUs will soon be stationed at the state-run <keyword id="597629" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="KC-General-Hospital">KC General Hospital</keyword> in the city's northwest suburb for treating Covid patients," state Deputy Chief Minister <keyword id="6528522" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="C-N-Ashwath-Narayan">C.N. Ashwath Narayan</keyword> said here. The containers, with 5 beds in each, have been donated by the city-based Rinac India Ltd, maker of sanitised operation theatres and clean rooms in state-run and private hospitals across the country. "The container ICUs will enable us to fight the pandemic across the state as they are mobile and equipped with facilities required for Covid care," said Narayan, a <keyword id="675295" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Medical-doctor">medical doctor</keyword> by profession, after inspecting one of them. Doctors enter the containers through an air lock, while patients through another door. The ICUs are fitted with a camera to monitor the treatment online from a centralised station to minimise exposure of healthcare personal. "The modular container ICUs will be very useful in times of crisis like Covid and other natural calamities due to their mobility and well-equipped facilities," said Narayan on the occasion. The 40 feet (length) by 10 feet (width) and 8 feet (height) mobile ICUs have a toilet in each module, lights, fan/ac and a corridor. "The prefabricated modules of 5-bed can be moved to any location on a trailer and deployed quickly," said Narayan. Easy to clean and maintain, multiple containers at a specific location create a common facility. "As modular containers are airtight, no moisture ingression makes it easy to isolate each room," added Narayan. Of the 4,537 new cases reported on Saturday, Bengaluru accounted for 2,125, taking its Covid tally to 29,621, including 22,449 active after 6,540 were discharged so far, with 250 in the last 24 hours, while 631 succumbed to the virus, with 49 since Friday. --IANS fb/sdr/

Karnataka on Tuesday banned strike by workers of Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) at its Bidadi plant and directed the management to lift the lockout for resuming production soon. "I have directed the Toyota workers' union to withdraw its strike and told the <keyword id="4081652" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="company-management">company management</keyword> to lift the week-long lockout declared on November 10 to resume production soon," state Deputy Chief Minister C.N. Ashwath Narayan told reporters here. As the union and its management were in a deadlock over the strike and the lockout following the suspension of 40 workers, Narayan held talks with them at the state secretariat in the city in the presence of state Labour Minister Shivaram Hebbar and the state labour commissioner. "A notification will be issued on Wednesday under section 10 (3) of the <keyword id="455743" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Industrial-Disputes-Act">Industrial Disputes Act</keyword> to ban the strike by the workers and to lift the lockout that was imposed to prevent any damage to the factory," asserted Narayan. The lockout was declared after 1,200 workers resorted to a sit-in strike in the plant at Bidadi in protest against the suspension of their union member. As the strike continued, the company declared lockout and suspended 39 more workers on November 13 for refusing to withdraw their 'illegal' agitation. In a tweet in Kannada later, the 78-year-old Yediyurappa said he was fine but got admitted to a hospital as a precaution on the advice of doctors. "I request those who have come in contact with me recently to be observant and exercise self-quarantine," he said. State Medical Education Minister K. Sudhakar, who is in-charge of Covid care in the southern state, confirmed that Yediyurappa tested positive for the infection. "I pray that he (Yediyurappa) will heal soon, as prayers of the people are with him. He will soon recover and return to work," tweeted Sudhakar in Kannada. The chief minister has been at home in the official residence since Friday due to three government holidays since July 31 to Sunday. "On July 31, the chief minister, however, met state Governor Vajubhai Vala at Raj Bhavan in the city centre along with state home minister Basavaraj Bommai. Later, National Education Policy draft committee chairman K. Kasturirangan called on him at his residence," the official recalled.
