<ul><li>‘Challenge accepted,’ said Gurnani to <keyword id="15681942" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chatgpt" source="Orion">ChatGPT</keyword> maker OpenAI CEO <keyword id="257641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sam-altman" source="Orion">Sam Altman</keyword> who had said it was totally hopeless to compete with his company on training foundational AI models.</li><li>Gurnani has taken a contrarian stance to that of the industry recently on the <keyword id="64527" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="moonlighting" source="Orion">moonlighting</keyword> issue.</li><li>He had created a unique approach to downsizing when his company took over troubled Satyam Computers. </li></ul>Come December, <keyword id="351287" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="c-p-gurnani" source="Orion">C P Gurnani</keyword> is all set to hang his boots as <keyword id="43217" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tech-mahindra" source="Orion">Tech Mahindra</keyword>’s CEO, but that’s not making him take a back seat. Unlike most tech CEOs and other top leaders in general, he is unafraid to speak his mind. So much so that Gurnani made OpenAI CEO Sam Altman back down and clarify his comments that it’s hopeless for India to compete with his company on AI. The first to respond was Gurnani who ‘accepted a challenge’ on behalf of India — to create a ChatGPT-like product. “From one CEO to another, challenge accepted,” Gurnani said after Altman said, “The way this works is we're going to tell you, it’s totally hopeless to compete with us on training foundational models, you shouldn’t try and it’s your job to try anyways,” responding to a question on the capability of small team of Indians to try it. Altman’s comments, however, ended up reportedly offending the likes of minister of state for IT and electronics, Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Meanwhile, the 64-year-old Gurnani, never one to shy away from taking on challenges or voicing his opinions, however contrary — has taken the bull by the horn one more time. A votary of moonlighting Not too long ago, when moonlighting was a hot debate, almost every tech major including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys opposed it calling it an ‘ethical issue’. In fact, Wipro’s executive chairman Rishad Premji was a vocal opponent, claiming to have fired people for taking up side hustles while being employed with the company and ‘working’ from home. Amidst a sea of dissent, Gurnani was one of the first voices who supported moonlighting – only asking his employees to be open about it. He asked them not to cover up the extra work as it would aid their resumes. “If you go by my word, if someone is meeting the efficiency and productivity norms, and he wants to make some extra money as long as he is not committing fraud, he is not doing something against the values and ethics of his company, I have no problem. I would like to make it a policy. So, if you want to do it, cheers to that, but be open about it," Gurnani had said. ‘People were not toxic’ Such out-of-the-box thinking and policies are not new for Gurnani. After the shocking Satyam scam, where its founder admitted to falsifying accounts, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra bought the company and brought Gurnani to run it. Almost all the employees of the beleaguered company had turned persona non grata. However, he said, “The company’s accounting books were toxic, the people were not.” Amidst dealing with legal and regulatory issues, he did roadshows lasting many months to convince clients to stay with the company. However, as the immediate task was to improve profitability of the company, he had to do what he dreaded — fire around 18,000 people. The firing was not done at one go however. The company gave a small salary for six months, set up job fairs, trained them and even had psychiatrists to help tide over the crisis – until they found another job. As with moonlighting and the Satyam restructuring, Gurnani brings his unique perspective to artificial intelligence (AI) as well. The chemical engineer from NIT Rourkela isn’t worried about AI taking over human jobs – he believes it will give humans more leeway to create emotional connections and relationships, and of course bring in more creativity to work and life.

C P Gurnani and the contrarian stance

<ul><li>One of the top five IT services companies, <keyword id="43217" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tech-mahindra" source="Orion">Tech Mahindra</keyword> reported a 25% decline in net profit for April-June quarter.</li><li>The management attributed the decline in profitability to rising employee benefits costs, which includes promotions and salary hikes.</li><li>However, high spending towards retaining employees by giving hikes and promotions has paid off the firm’s attrition rate, which has come down to 22% from 24% last quarter.</li><li>Tech Mahindra’s attrition is still better than peers Infosys (28.4%) and TCS (23.3%).</li></ul>A fourth of Tech Mahindra’s first quarter revenues were eaten up by employee expenses, pushing its profits down by 25% on a sequential basis. The company’s CEO C P Gurnani says that this wage hike has reduced its attrition by 2% from last quarter, and predicts that it will reduce by another 4% in six months. But when asked for specifics, he said, “Attrition is as hard to predict as death,” at the post-earnings press conference. Its total income grew marginally by around 3% to ₹12,830 crore sequentially. Its constant currency revenue growth stood at 3.5%, the company said in its press release. “We are confident that we will be presenting to you continuously over the next few quarters industry leading growth. We are also confident that we will have an opportunity to work on the profitability levers,” said Gurnani. High spending towards retaining employees by giving hikes and promotions has aided as Tech Mahindra’s attrition rate has come down to 22% from 24% last quarter. If it’s able to keep up with its predictions, in the next two quarters, it could come down to 18%. Tech Mahindra’s attrition is still better than peers Infosys which is at 28.4% and that of TCS at 23.3%. Attrition is as hard to predict as death says C P Gurnani after TechM loses profits to wage hikes

IT services major <keyword id="43217" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tech-Mahindra">Tech Mahindra</keyword> on Wednesday said its subsidiary has divested over 18.5 million shares in <keyword id="6159839" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="altiostar-networks">Altiostar Networks</keyword> for USD 45 million (about Rs 331 crore) to <keyword id="9986581" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="rakuten-USA">Rakuten USA</keyword>, Inc. "Tech Mahindra (Americas) Inc - an 100 per cent subsidiary of Tech Mahindra Ltd - divested its holding of 18,518,518 C1 Preferred shares in Altiostar Networks," Tech Mahindra said in a regulatory filing. Given that it is a minority investment, there is no contribution to turnover/revenue/income and net worth by Altiostar Networks, Inc during last financial year, it added. "The buyer is Rakuten USA, Inc," the filing said, adding the consideration received from the sale is USD 45 million. <keyword id="7347799" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rakuten-Mobile">Rakuten Mobile</keyword> and Tech Mahindra have also signed an agreement, where the Indian tech firm will be a preferred partner and provide technologies as well as software capabilities to support the development and deployment of mobile networks for global customers of RCP (Rakuten Communications Platform). Through the agreement, Tech Mahindra will also provide managed IT, security and network services to Rakuten Mobile, a statement said. There are also plans to designate Tech Mahindra as an official reseller of RCP, it added. A survey done by Tech Mahindra on its employees found that employees who were leaving the organisation were from Tier-I cities. “Attrition in some of India's bigger cities is high whether it is Bangalore, Hyderabad, or Pune. We have also done an analysis to know that the attrition is much much lower when it comes to Bhubaneswar and Nagpur...We anticipate a certain amount of attrition, hence plan for hiring or reskilling or upskilling a little ahead of time,” said C.P. Gurnani, chief executive officer and managing director of Tech Mahindra at a press conference after the earnings release. Tech Mahindra added 14,930 employees between July and September, taking the total employee count to 1.41 lakh. The company reported a fall in profit in the last three months. However, investors seem to have already factored in poor profit growth as shares of the company were trading lower in the early hours of trade on October 25, ahead of earnings release. The information technology (IT) firm’s second quarter profit fell marginally by 1% to ₹1,339 crore. Analysts had expected the profit growth to remain flat with a <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/stocks/tech-mahindra-shares-trade-lower-ahead-of-q2-earnings-7621931.html">reportedly</a> marginal rise of 2% quarter-on-quarter due to the impact of higher employee costs on margins. The company has announced a special dividend of ₹15 per share in the earnings release. Also, the IT firm announced the acquisition of California-headquartered Infostar (Lodestone) for which it will pay a total consideration of up to $105 million. Lodestone is a digital engineering quality assurance provider for new-age digital companies. The acquisition will bolster Tech Mahindra’s digital engineering capabilities to effectively utilise data strategy and address machine learning challenges, said the company. Tech Mahindra's attrition rate is nearly twice that of TCS

IT major <keyword id="43217" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tech-Mahindra">Tech Mahindra</keyword> on Monday posted a 34.6 per cent rise in consolidated net profit to ₹1,081.4 crore for the March 2020 <keyword id="6545597" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="quarter">quarter</keyword>. Its net profit stood at ₹803.9 crore in the corresponding period a year ago, Tech Mahindra said in a regulatory filing. The Mumbai-based company saw its <keyword id="1153513" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="consolidated-revenue">consolidated revenue</keyword> from operations increasing 2.5 per cent to ₹9,729.9 crore as against ₹9,490.2 crore in the year-ago quarter, it added. For the full financial year, the net profit was up 9.8 per cent to ₹4,428 crore, while revenue from operations was higher by 2.7 per cent to ₹37,855.1 crore as compared to 2019-20. Tech Mahindra Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer C P Gurnani said, "Our continued focus on cutting-edge technologies has expanded client engagement with large deal wins this quarter. We are witnessing a strong demand acceleration." He added that the health and wellness of Tech Mahindra associates and community at large. <keyword id="1118568" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Milind-Kulkarni">Milind Kulkarni</keyword>, chief financial officer at Tech Mahindra, said the company has witnessed substantial margin improvement and cash flow generation during the year. "Our focus on delivery transformation will continue, as we increasingly witness a structural shift towards digital to adapt to the new normal. We are positioned uniquely to gain from this shift, while improving our financial and operating metrics going forward," he added. The board of directors have recommended a final dividend of ₹30 per share (including <keyword id="1729046" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="special-dividend">special dividend</keyword> of ₹15 per share) for the financial year ended March 31, 2021, subject to shareholder approval. The special and final dividend, if approved, will be paid by August 11, 2021. This dividend is in addition to the special dividend of ₹15 per share paid as interim dividend. The total dividend for 2020-21 will be ₹45, the filing said. Tech Mahindra has also announced the acquisition of Eventus Solutions Group, a US-based consulting and technology service company. The acquisition will help Tech Mahindra bolster its consulting capabilities in customer experience (CX) and customer management space and move up the value chain in the BPS business. Tech Mahindra's total headcount stood at 1,21,054 at the end of March 2021 quarter, down 847 from the preceding quarter. Tech Mahindra Q4 net profit jumps 34.6% to ₹1,081.4 crore

New Delhi, Jan 31 () IT services firm Tech Mahindra on Friday reported a 4.7 per cent decline in its consolidated net profit at Rs 1,145.9 crore for the December 2019 quarter.
 The Mumbai-based firm had registered a net profit (attributable to owners of the company) at Rs 1,202.9 crore in the corresponding quarter of the last fiscal, Tech Mahindra said in a statement.
 However, its revenue from operations grew 7.9 per cent to Rs 9,654.6 crore in the quarter under review from Rs 8,943.7 crore in the year-ago period, it added.
 Earnings per share (EPS) was at Rs 13.13. In dollar terms, the net profit was up 1.3 per cent sequentially to USD 160.6 million, while revenue grew 5.1 per cent to USD 1,353 million in the said quarter.
 This is a quarter of strong growth across the company's Communications and Enterprise businesses, Tech Mahindra Managing Director and CEO C P Gurnani said.
 "We continue to win marquee deals and are well poised to capitalise on new market opportunities with technology shifts like 5G, which continues to be a key focus area in the year ahead," he added.
 The company's total headcount was at 1,30,839 people, a reduction of 683 people from the September 2019 quarter.
 The company witnessed substantial operational and financial metrics improvement with healthy cash flow generation this quarter, Manoj Bhat, chief financial officer at Tech Mahindra said.
 "We continue to invest in emerging technologies and streamline delivery as we ready ourselves for the next phase of growth," he added.
 Tech Mahindra also announced the acquisition of 70 per cent stake in Bengaluru-headquartered Cerium Systems.
 "Cerium will boost the company's Engineering Services practice in VLSI (very large scale integration) and Embedded Software.
 "We continue to invest in niche digital assets complementing our service offerings. Cerium provides cutting edge solutions with a strong foothold in global semiconductor industry," Tech Mahindra Head of Corporate Development and Portfolio Companies Vivek Agarwal said.

By Yoshita Singh United Nations, May 19 () Four Indian corporations are among over 150 global companies that have signed a statement urging governments around the world to align their COVID-19 economic aid and recovery efforts with the latest climate science that prioritises a faster and fairer transition from a grey to a green economy.Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Chief Executive Officer Mahendra Singhi, Polygenta Technologies Chief Marketing Officer Makarand Kulkarni, Tech Mahindra Chief Executive Officer C P Gurnani and Wipro's Chief Executive Officer Abidali Neemuchwala are the signatories to the statement, along with top executives hailing from 34 sectors across 33 countries.The other signatories include global pharma giant Novartis headed by Vas Narasimhan and Adobe, led by Shantanu Narayen, AstraZeneca, Burberry, Capgemini, Colgate Palmolive, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Nestlé, Sanofi and Unilever.
