It entertains the audience, makes them engage with it and take notice. Any conversation that tends towards a slight controversy grabs eye-balls on social media and can be remembered for a longer time. While Cola wars and burger rivalries are quite common, a recent example that caught our attention was that of top honchos of Chinese smartphone companies such as Xiaomi’s Manu Kumar Jain, Realme’s Madhav Sheth and Poco’s C Manmohan engaging in a war of words on Twitter. It all started when a Twitter user, Nimish Dubey, tagged Jain asking if Xiaomi’s ad model had inspired Realme’s decision to introduce intrusive ads onto its operating system. To which, Jain responded by mocking Realme for being a ‘copy-cat’ instead. He further said that all smartphone brands push advertisements but the audience mocks Xiaomi because it has been transparent about its business model, whilst others have shied away.

 Poco’s Manmohan got back at Jain by making fun of his unsolicited advice and asked him to concentrate on his declining sales instead.

 Brand and Social Media Expert, Karthik Srinivasan took to Twitter to share his views on this conversation between the CEOs and how it can affect their brand’s image in public. He wrote, “This is all terrible form, to play out in public. This used to be reserved for closed rooms and private discussions earlier. Now, it's all spilling into a public spectacle. Maybe they all learn from TV News channels which have made mudslinging an art form and as viewers (humans!), we all seem to love watching dirty linen being washed in public as long as it is not our dirty linen. Voyeurism.” However, he also said that this could open up a room for public transparency, bringing boardroom bashing out in the public. “Another way to look at it: this is the new way of doing business! Attacking rivals head-on, publicly, in a highly competitive market is a way to garner attention. Riding on that heady attention is akin to riding a wild bull, but that's the need for today's cut-throat markets,” explains Srinivasan. Even in the past, rivals Xiaomi and OnePlus have tried to pull each other down in their campaigns. When OnePlus on-boarded Hollywood actor, Robert Downey Junior as its brand endorser, Xiaomi came up with an OOH campaign and placed it right beside OnePlus’ billboard with a tagline that read, ‘Starkly Superior To The Latest One’, taking a dig at OnePlus. Talking about the larger problem in this recent banter, Srinivasan tweeted, “When you attack someone, the viewers would assume that you are open for attacks too. ‘He can do that to others, so I guess he's game too!’. ‘Negativity begets negativity’. Both positivity and negativity are contagious. It's usually a choice.”

As top smartphone CEOs engage in a public banter, expert thinks it could affect the brand's image negatively

New Delhi, Apr 28 () POCO, which was spun off from Xioami as a separate entity, is focussing on strengthening various parts of its business, including R&amp;D and testing, as it gears up to tap into the "pent-up demand" for smartphones after the lockdown ends. POCO, which had launched 'X2' in February, captured a spot among the top five brands in the Rs 15,000-20,000 price segment during January-March quarter. "We are happy with the progress we have made in a short span of time. The initial numbers are strong. We had to halt sales because of the lockdown, we will abide by the laws, and once the lockdown ends, we will be back in full force," POCO India General Manager C Manmohan said. He added that the company is focussed on preparing its team and strengthening operations, including areas like research and development (R&amp;D) and testing. "We anticipate a pent up demand after the lockdown ends. After grocery, smartphones are an important item that people require, whether it is for work, study or entertainment," he said adding that the supply is expected to also ramp up in phases after lockdown gets lifted across various parts of the country. According to Counterpoint Research, demand is expected to shift to the second part of the year and people may hold-off purchasing until the festive season. Smartphone shipment in India is expected to decline by 10 per cent in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, even though the January-March quarter had seen shipment growing at modest 4 per cent with over 31 million units. The government has imposed a nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus pandemic that has claimed thousands of lives globally. The lockdown, which is slated to be lifted on May 3, has led to factories and retail stores remaining closed, thus hitting smartphone sales. With only essential items like grocery and health and pharmaceutical products being allowed to be sold online, phone companies are staring at multi-billion dollar hit which will increase if the lockdown period is extended. India is the world's second largest smartphone market after China. The home ministry had allowed operation of IT hardware, manufacturing and other industrial establishments with access control in special economic zones and export-oriented units in industrial estates and townships from April 20 with certain restrictions. POCO readies operations to meet 'pent-up demand' after lockdown

New Delhi, Jan 23 () POCO, which has recently been spun off from Xioami as a separate entity, is working towards becoming an independent legal entity in India.
Speaking to , POCO India General Manager C Manmohan said the company is working on becoming an independent legal entity in India to operate as a distinct company.
"POCO has been able to differentiate itself in the market in the last one and half years. We will continue listening to consumers to bring innovative products to them... we are working on establishing an independent legal entity in India," he added.
POCO had launched 'F1' in August 2018. While it is not clear how many devices have been sold, reports suggest it had been able to capture over 3 per cent market share in 2018 in Rs 15,000-30,000 price segment. This share dropped later, given that no new devices were launched under POCO after the F1. 
Manmohan said the company will leverage some resources from Xiaomi like after-sales but that will be done through separate agreements. The company has already established a product, sales and marketing team of its own.
POCO will also introduce its next product in the Indian market next month.
"We will launch our new phone next month. We will start online and then progress to additional channels," he said.
Talking about the smartphone market in the country, Manmohan said the industry is very different from 2018, when POCO was launched as a sub-brand of Xiaomi.
"The last one and a half years have been a good training exercise. As a separate entity, we will be able to take decisions independently. There is competition, including from Xiaomi, but our focus will be on delivering premium experiences and innovation," he added.
Xiaomi led the smartphone shipment tally with 27.1 per cent share in the September 2019 quarter, followed by Samsung (18.9 per cent), Vivo (15.2 per cent), Realme (14.3 per cent) and Oppo (11.8 per cent), as per an industry report.
According to Counterpoint Research, POCO had 3.6 per cent share in 2018 in the Rs 15,000-30,000 price segment, which dropped to 1.1 per cent in 2019. SR ANU
