<ul><li>The information was revealed by a <keyword id="41305" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="LeT">LeT</keyword> militant, captured on 7 April. </li><li>Calls made from the device cannot be intercepted by intelligence agencies.</li></ul> <keyword id="6552102" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="zaibullah">Zaibullah</keyword> alias <keyword id="225804" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hamza">Hamza</keyword>, a 20-year-old Multan-based <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lashkar-e-Taiba">Lashkar-e-Taiba</a> (LeT) militant, has made some worrisome <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/let-has-developed-an-untraceable-mobile-trains-terrorists-in-underground-facility-claims-captured-terrorist/articleshow/64283814.cms">revelations</a> after his capture on April 7th. Zaibullah was apprehended from a house in Kupwara, in Jammu and Kashmir, India. Apparently, the terror outfit has developed a mobile phone that is specially made for the communication of LeT members. The handset uses a particular chip that enables the mobile device to connect to the nearest mobile tower, irrespective of telecom service provider. The militant also claims that the calls cannot be traced by intelligence agencies and if any call is even intercepted, it will disconnect automatically. The LeT has trained about 450 men out of different places in Pakistan for anti-India operations last year, says a report by <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/let-has-developed-an-untraceable-mobile-trains-terrorists-in-underground-facility-claims-captured-terrorist/articleshow/64283814.cms">Economic Times</a>. Zaibullah, son of an income tax officer in Pakistan was one of them. He crossed over to India in March with five others. All his associates who crossed the border with him were killed in an encounter with the Indian Army on March 20. Zaibullah even took a bullet to his hand in the encounter but escaped the scene. He was caught 15 days later. He says that the LeT chiefs also visit training camps where boys like him between the age of 15-25 are trained. All the trainees are motivated towards ‘jihad’ and are even been motivated in the name of ‘<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burhan_Wani">Burhan Wani</a>’. Zabiullah also <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/let-has-developed-an-untraceable-mobile-trains-terrorists-in-underground-facility-claims-captured-terrorist/articleshow/64283814.cms">claims</a> that his father, an income tax officer in Pakistan, encouraged his activities and donated Rs 1,000 per month to a ‘jihad fund’.

However, for a lot of us, the real timeline is either unknown or has become hazy over a period of time. So, here is a complete timeline of what has happened-bare facts of how the state of Jammu&amp;Kasmir has unraveled over the last seven decades. 
 
 
 
1947 – The British rule ended in India and the nation was divided into mainly Hindu India and Muslim-majority state of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Pakistan&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Pakistan</a>. 
 1947 – The Pakistan tribal army starts attacking the <keyword id="3744025" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="kashmir-region">Kashmir region</keyword> and the Maharaja of Kashmir signs a treaty of accession with India. War breaks out between India and Pakistan over the region. 
 1948 – India raises <keyword id="64132" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kashmir-issue">Kashmir issue</keyword> in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=UN+Security+Council&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">UN Security Council</a>, which in Resolution 47 calls for a referendum on the status of the territory. Kashmir is for practical purposes partitioned. 
 1951 – Elections are held in the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir back accession to India. India feels that this makes a referendum <keyword id="6355835" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="UN">un</keyword>necessary. The UN and Pakistan say a referendum needs to take into account the views of voters throughout the former princely state. 
 
 
 1953 - Pro-Indian authorities arrest and dismiss Prime Minister <keyword id="293003" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sheikh-Abdullah">Sheikh Abdullah</keyword>, leader of the governing <keyword id="43898" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Conference">National Conference</keyword>, as he takes a pro-referendum stance and delays formal accession to India. 1971-72 - Another Indo-Pakistan war ends in defeat for Pakistan and leads to the 1972 Simla Agreement.This turns the Kashmir ceasefire line into the Line of Control, pledges both sides to settle their differences through negotiations, and calls for a final settlement of the Kashmir dispute. 1974 - The Opposition Plebiscite Front in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir drops demand for a referendum in return for extensive autonomy in an agreement with the Indian government. Sheikh Abdullah becomes chief minister, and his political dynasty continues to dominate the National Conference and state after his death in 1982.

1990s - The insurgency keeps on continuing, with Kashmiri militants training in Pakistan and India deploying hundreds of thousands of troops in Jammu and Kashmir. It’s the civilians that have been facing violence by both sides. 
 
1999 - India and Pakistan go to war again after militants cross from Pakistani-administered Kashmir into the Indian-administered Kargil district. India repulses the attack, accuses Pakistan of being behind it, and breaks off relations. 
 2001-2004 - Moves to boost relations between the two countries are punctuated by continuing violence, notably an attack on the parliament of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir in <keyword id="41568" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Srinagar">Srinagar</keyword> in 2001. 
 
2010 - Major protests erupt in the Kashmir Valley of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir over the summer after a demonstrator is killed by the Indian army. The protests abate in September after the government announce measures to ease tension. 
 2011 August - Chief Minister <keyword id="19464" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Omar-Abdullah">Omar Abdullah</keyword> announces an amnesty for the 1,200 young men who threw stones at security forces during the anti-government protests in the Kashmir Valley in 2010. Indian <keyword id="64385" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Human-Rights-Commission">State Human Rights Commission</keyword> confirms presence of more than 2,000 unidentified bodies in unmarked graves near the Line of Control. Kashmir: The Bare Facts of a region torn into pieces

Four young boys from the border towns of Jammu and Kashmir have made their way to different IITs. This is the first time anyone from terrorist-infested areas of <keyword id="44760" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Poonch">Poonch</keyword> has made it to India's premier institute. 
 
Usman Hafiz, Aqib Mujtaba, Hilal Ahmad, and Shahid Afridi's feat is a historic development for J&amp;K and comes as a fresh hope for inhabitants of a state still in mourning over militant <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Jammu-and-Kashmir-tense-after-militants-killing-five-more-killed-curfews-imposed/articleshow/53149032.cms">Burhan Wani's killing in July this year</a>. 
 These teens, who represent the J&amp;K's new age youth, are proving <keyword id="2931728" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Burhan-Wani">Burhan Wani</keyword> and stonepelters are not the only face of the youth in the troubled state. They seek their state's development and more job opportunities. 
 Shahid, who hails from Shindra village, is pursuing a degree in computer science at <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword> Kanpur. Meanwhile, Gujjar Muslims from the state are rejoicing as the other three boys are from their Kalai village. While 18-year-old Aqib is pursuing mechanical engineering at IIT Bhubaneswar, 17-year-old Usman is studying electrical engineering at IIT Delhi and 19-year-old Hilal is studying computer science at IIT Patna. 
 
“It’s time J&amp;K’s youth understand that those who ask them to turn into stone-pelters are instigators, not well-wishers. Poonch has seen no industry. The first thing that comes to mind is to bring rail connectivity and the knitwear industry to my region,” Usman told media.

These boys from J&K border towns studying in IITs prove new age youth in the terror-stricken region seek jobs, not guns

Pakistan Prime Minister <keyword id="6576" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nawaz-Sharif">Nawaz Sharif</keyword> made yet another attempt to bring the Kashmir issue on the world stage and moved the United Nations to resolve the over two decade old conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations. 
 During his speech at the <keyword id="426867" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="United-Nations-General-Assembly">United Nations General Assembly</keyword>, Sharif said Pakistan was making all attempts and even “going an extra mile” to resolve all the issues with India. 
 “India has posed unacceptable preconditions to engage in a dialogue. Let us be clear: talks are no favor to Pakistan. Talks are in the interest of both countries. They are essential to resolve our differences, especially the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, and to avert the danger of any escalation,” Sharif said during the <keyword id="429560" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="UNGA">UNGA</keyword>. 
 Sharif also raked up the <keyword id="2931728" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Burhan-Wani">Burhan Wani</keyword> issue and said he was a young leader murdered by Indian forces. 
 
“This indigenous uprising of the Kashmiris has been met, as usual, with brutal repression by India’s occupation force of over half a million soldiers. Over a hundred Kashmiris have been killed, hundreds, including children and infants, blinded by shotgun pellets and over six thousand unarmed civilians injured over the past two months,” he said. 
 
On the other hand, India was swift enough to take on Sharif’s tall claims and gave befitting replies to each of his statements made at the world diaspora

Pakistan was accused of carrying out “war crimes” against Indians through its "long-standing policy" of sponsoring terrorism and was also called a “terrorist state” by India. "When practiced as an instrument of state policy it is a war crime. What my country and our other neighbours are facing today is Pakistan's long-standing policy of sponsoring terrorism, the consequences of which have spread well beyond our region. India sees in Pakistan "a terrorist state" which channelizes billions of dollars, much of it diverted from international aid, to training, financing and supporting terrorist groups as militant proxies against it neighbours," she added. 
 She made a reference to to JeM chief <keyword id="6459729" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Masood-Azhar">Masood Azhar</keyword> and Mumbai <keyword id="6355368" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="terror-attack">terror attack</keyword> mastermind Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi and said that people from terrorist organizations and their leaders, even those designated by UN, without any problem roam around freely in the streets of Pakistan and they operate with the State’s support. 
 
"With the approval of authorities, many terrorist organisations raise funds openly in flagrant violation of Pakistan's international obligations," she said. 
 
She also highlighted the irony that Pakistan talks about restrain, renunciation and peace while Pakistan's nuclear proliferation record is marked by "deception and deceit. She also said that the international community has made many false promises on terrorism and renunciation of lies and self-restrain on threats could be a good place for Pakistan to start. 
 India also condemned Sharif for glorifying <keyword id="50913" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hizbul-Mujahideen">Hizbul Mujahideen</keyword> terrorist <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Burhan+Wani%2C+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Burhan Wani, </a>who was killed on July 8 by the Indian forces 
"Even today we have heard support by the Prime Minister of Pakistan for a self-acknowledged commander of a known terrorist organization," Gambhir said. 
 
"Pakistan extends support to extremist groups, it suppresses minorities and women and denies basic human rights including through draconian laws," she added while talking about Pakistan terrorizing its own citizens. 
 Gambhir also made a clear statement that India will be doing anything to protect all of its citizens from all acts of terrorism in <keyword id="17605" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-and-kashmir">Jammu and Kashmir</keyword>."We cannot and will not allow terrorism to prevail," she said. 
 
"The effect of its toxic curriculum are felt across the globe," Gambhir said, adding that it is ironical that a country which has established itself as the global epicenter of terrorism, is preaching human rights and talks about the ostensible support for self-determination. She also brought it to the notice of <keyword id="107187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="UN-General-Assembly">UN General Assembly</keyword> that shortly before Sharif gave its ironic statements about violation of human rights in the world body, its envoy in New Delhi was summoned in the context of the most recent of the terror attacks in <keyword id="71431" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uri">Uri</keyword> that claimed 18 Indian lives. 
 
"That terrorist attack is part of a trail of continuous flow of terrorists trained and armed by our neighbour and tasked to carry out terrorist attacks in my country," she said.

Pakistan is a terrorist state: Eenam Gambhir, also slams Nawaz Sharif

It was after a long time that people had started to visit Kashmir after decades of militancy and violence. 
 As per travel operators, if the ongoing tension doesn't improve by December this year, this will be impacting <keyword id="780841" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kashmir-Tourism">Kashmir tourism</keyword> for as far as the summer of 2018. 
 
"It is unfortunate that the finest tourist destination of the country which was slowly recovering after a generation of violence and terror has been affected this way. Our sales to Kashmir have gone down sharply from last year. Itineraries are getting changed to Auli for skiing, further north for trekking and regions like Shimla, Mashobra and even Bhutan," Rakshit Desai, MD, FCM Travel Solutions, told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/magazines/travel/kashmir-crisis-may-hit-travel-plans-till-summer-of-2018/articleshow/54023024.cms">ET</a>. 
 
Travel operators also understand the situations of people who had booked holidays in Kashmir but had to cancel their plans after the tension. While on one hand OYO Rooms is not charging any cancellation fees and is offering refunds to such customers, Cox &amp; Kings is offering them alternate plans to Himachal, Rajasthan and Andamans, while also providing 100% refunds. 
 
Even the airline companies like Air India, Jet Airways and Indigo had announced no charges on cancellation and rebooking for Srinagar-bound flights in July.

Recent disturbance in Kashmir has impacted tourists' plans for almost two years⁠⁠⁠⁠

The curfew in Jammu and Kashmir entered the 46 th day and normalcy has not returned in the valley. One of many things that got badly affected within these 46 days was businesses. 
 
Local business was badly hit in strife-torn state and the losses touched more than Rs 6,000 crore in 45 days of strife. 
 
Mohd Yasin Khan, president of Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation, told ET the sector is bleeding by approximately Rs 135 crore every day. 
 
“In the 46 days of curfew it would be upwards of Rs 6,000 crore. We're facing the worst economic crisis ever, but then this is happening again and again. We need a permanent solution to it and it has to be political. Losing our dear ones is a far greater tragedy for us. That has to stop," Khan told ET. 
 
This is the tourist season for Jammu and Kashmir but the locals haven’t been able to make anything out of it as the valley has come to a halt. 
 
Hotels are empty and there are no takers for houseboats or shikara rides. 
 
"Seventy per cent of apples that India gets are from Kashmir. Imagine the situation in the orchards. Farmers have sent their labourers home, but what do they do in places like Sopore, Tarzoo and Anantnag, where the situation is worse?" a businessman told ET. 
 
The reality is grim on the ground as locals tell their sufferings. 
 
Abdul Rouf Bhat, who sells packaged drinking water, told ET his firm Pagent Industries used to sell 1,500 cases of his product in the days just before July 8, when the killing of Hizb terrorist Burhan Wani triggered a chain of events that has now led to 67 deaths and 46 days of curfew. 
 
"Now I sell 50," he rued. Bhat said he has been paying only 50% wages to workers. "But how long can I continue? Even that will have to stop. They know this. They also know I am helpless."

India's Ambassador to the UN <keyword id="882197" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Syed-Akbaruddin">Syed Akbaruddin</keyword> has strongly reacted to Pakistan's envoy <keyword id="705054" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maleeha-Lodhi">Maleeha Lodhi</keyword>’s statements in which she condemned the killing of Hizbul commander <keyword id="2931728" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Burhan-Wani">Burhan Wani</keyword>. 
 
In its reaction to the above, India accused Pakistan of praising the virtues of terrorists and wanting others’ territories. 
 
It was during a debate on human rights in the 193-member UN General Assembly that Lodhi raised the issue of Kashmir, and called "Kashmiri leader" Wani’s encounter as an "extra-judicial" killing. 
 
In the past UN meetings as well, Lodhi has regularly raised the Kashmir issue. This time around, she called Wani's killing as the "most chilling recent example" of "human rights violations" by Indian forces in Kashmir.

She alleged that the denial of self-determination to Kashmiri people is responsible for arbitrary detentions, summary executions and other "atrocious" violations by the armed forces. "Its most chilling recent example is the extra-judicial killing last week of a Kashmiri leader, Burhan Wani, shot to death by Indian forces along with dozens of other innocent Kashmiris," she said. 
 
To this, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Indias-most-familiar-foreign-ministry-face-now-Indias-permanent-representative-at-the-UN/articleshow/49089442.cms">Akbaruddin </a>said that Pakistan "extols" the virtues of terrorists and it’s because of its track record that it’s been unable to gain membership of the UN's human rights body. 
 
"Regrettably, earlier today we have seen an attempt at misuse of this UN platform. The attempt came from Pakistan; a country that covets the territory of others; a country that uses terrorism as state policy towards that misguided end; a country that extols the virtues of terrorists and that provides sanctuary to UN-designated terrorists; and a country that masquerades its efforts as support for human rights and self determination," he was reported saying. 
 
"The international community has long seen through such designs. Cynical attempts, like the one this morning therefore, find no resonance in this forum or elsewhere in the United Nations," he added. 
 
"We remain strongly committed to the promotion and protection of all human rights for all through pursuit of dialogue and cooperation," he said. 
 
After Wani's encounter last week, the valley has seen <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Jammu-and-Kashmir-tense-after-militants-killing-five-more-killed-curfews-imposed/articleshow/53149032.cms">at least 30 deaths</a>, with more than 250 people injured in the clashes between protesters and security personnel. 
 On this issue, UN Secretary General <keyword id="41013" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ban-Ki-Moon">Ban Ki-moon</keyword> has asked all parties to exercise "maximum restraint to avoid further violence and hopes that all concerns would be addressed through peaceful means."

Don’t praise terrorists, India warns Pakistan at UN meet

<ul><li>The external affairs minister for <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>, <keyword id="6355111" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sushma-Swaraj">Sushma Swaraj</keyword>, will be representing India at the 73rd <keyword id="107187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="UN-General-Assembly">UN General Assembly</keyword> (<keyword id="429560" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="UNGA">UNGA</keyword>). </li><li>She has over a dozen bilateral meetings scheduled during the conferences and is scheduled to be present at two sessions. </li><li>In her speech at the UNGA, Swaraj focussed on India-Pakistan relations and the issue of India’s seat on the UN Security Council. </li></ul>The 73rd UN General Assembly (UNGA) meet being held in New York is India’s chance to engage on global issues that pertain beyond its regional interests. While the Indian external affairs minister, Sushma Swaraj, is scheduled to hold a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the conference, the shadow of India-Pakistan relations may keep India from engaging on larger international concerns. Earlier India was scheduled to engage with Pakistan as well, but after the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/pakistan-is-still-not-doing-enough-to-curb-terror-financing-and-time-is-running-out/articleshow/65839168.cms">killing</a> of three Jammu and Kashmir policemen and the issuing of <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/pakistan-burhan-wani-postal-stamps-sushma-swaraj-foreign-minister-5372002/">stamps</a> commemorating Burhan Wani, talks with Shah Mahmood Qureshi were cancelled. Swaraj is still <a href="https://www.oneindia.com/india/swaraj-to-have-over-half-a-dozen-bilateral-engagements-at-unga-including-one-with-nepal-2782746.html">scheduled</a> to hold bilateral meetings with the representatives of Germany, Panama Isabel de Saint Malo de Alvarado, Austria, Armenia, Antigua Barbuda, Nepal, Bolivia, Chile and Iran among others. She will also be representing India in the session on climate change held of secretary general, António Guterres, and the Ministerial Committee of the NAM on Palestine. The latter is of special significance considering the strategic and trade relationship between India and Israel. India-Pakistan relations Like last year, Swaraj delivered her speech in Hindi at the <keyword id="45802" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nelson-Mandela">Nelson Mandela</keyword> Peace Summit starting with India the effectiveness of the demonetisation exercise and the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). While there’s still an <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/economy/one-year-of-gst-is-goods-and-services-tax-rollout-successful-pm-modi-explains-in-5-points/1218179/">argument</a> to be made on whether or not GST has delivered the desired results, experts largely believe that demonetisation did little more than <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Opinion/PGRi4ySZO2HOWkARKq8GeM/Demonetisation-failed-to-make-India-a-less-cash-society.html">cause</a> damage to India’s informal economy. And, without naming any country in particular, Swaraj pointed out that India is busy fighting poverty but its ‘neighbouring country’ is busy fighting against the nation.  She went on to highlight other differences between India and Pakistan in terms of development and technology. The question really becomes whether India-Pakistan relations are the only issue that animate Indian interest on a global stage. The focus on regional issues on the global platform keeps India from engaging with other nations on international concerns and takes from the impact that India has on other issues that are been contested. And, this is despite the country’s growing economic relevance. UN Security Council A permanent seat on the UN Security Council through the G4 alliance consisting of Brazil, Germany, India and Japan is still on the table. One of the more significant developments was the promise of a manned space mission by 2022. But closer home, the Ayushman Bharat Healthcare Scheme is set to launch on 25 September. Here are the <keyword id="6381696" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="highlights">highlights</keyword> from Modi’s Independence Day address: <div type="image" title="independence day highlights" msid="65423758" hostid="261"></div>

 1. <keyword id="6797456" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gaganyaan">Gaganyaan</keyword> to take off in 2022 The preparations for the India’s first manned space mission have already been in the news for a while but the PM has officially set a launch deadline for 2022. Currently, project ‘Gaganyaan’, an initiative of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is in its initial stages having successfully tested the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/isro-pads-up-to-make-indias-manned-mission-into-space-a-reality/articleshow/64887057.cms">Crew Escape System</a>. That being said, while ambitious with its intentions, ISRO has had trouble meeting past deadlines. Most recently, the Chandrayaan-2 mission set to launch in April and then in October, is now looking at a 2019 launch date. But, the chairman of ISRO also warned that the launch maybe delayed to March if the changes aren’t made to the spacecraft in time. 2. Ayushman Bharat Healthcare scheme to launch on 25 September Also called the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Abhiyaan, the prime minister claims that it will benefit nearly 500 million citizens of the country. The scheme aims to give ₹500,000 ($7,123) cover per year for a whole family. Inclusive of nearly 1,354 packages within the scheme, the measure covers 100 million vulnerable families. That’s over 40% of the Indian population. The initiative, though necessarily for a country like India where statistics indicate that 67% of health expenditure is out-of-pocket, has ruffled a few feathers. There are questions over whether using third party administrators is the best idea and how easy it would be to exploit the loopholes in the scheme. 3. Permanent commissioning of <keyword id="624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Women">women</keyword> in the <keyword id="3790" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Armed-forces">armed forces</keyword> It’s not that women weren’t allowed in the Indian armed forces before, but with permanent commissioning, they can now be a part of the direct combat arms like the infantry, armoured corps and artillery. The current 3,700 women employed in the armed forces are restricted to officer posts. This initiative opens up a myriad of career choice where they can now apply for subordinate posts to achieve the ranks of colonels, brigadiers, major generals and lieutenant generals. 4. New agricultural export policy soon In a mission to double farmer incomes in India by 2022, the prime minister has stated that a new agricultural export policy will be rolled out soon that will boost their compensation. Using the ‘Beej se Bazaar tak’ (from planting seeds to accessing the market) approach, Modi expressed the importance of value addition. While no other details were revealed during the Independence Day address, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry did publish a Draft Agricultural Export Policy back in March that was aimed at doubling India’s agricultural exports and integrating agricultural commodities in to the global value chain. 5. <keyword id="95908" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Panchayat-polls">Panchayat polls</keyword> in Jammu and Kashmir It’s been seven years since the last panchayat polls in the volatile state of Jammu and Kashmir. The polls that were supposed to take place in 2016 were, first, postponed due to the unrest that followed the death of Burhan Wani and then, eventually cancelled due to ‘security concerns’. Even the local body elections haven’t been conducted in over eight years now. According to the state’s Governor, NN Vohra, the local body election will happen first over the course of September and October followed by the panchayat polls from October to December. Reviewing the country’s progress over the past couple of years, Modi made it a point to assert how his government has pulled pending initiatives through without directly pointing the finger at the Opposition. That being said, a fact-checking report by <a href="https://www.thequint.com/news/india/independence-day-speech-modi-fact-check">The Quint</a> calls those claims into question. Which is why though these announcements may bring a ray of hope to many, expectations should be adjusted keeping past performances in mind.

In a rather power-packed speech at the 71st <keyword id="6355833" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-nations">United Nations</keyword> General Assembly in New York, Minister for External Affairs <keyword id="6355111" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sushma-Swaraj">Sushma Swaraj</keyword> literally tore apart Pakistan Prime Minister <keyword id="6576" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nawaz-Sharif">Nawaz Sharif</keyword>’s claims on human rights violations in Kashmir as well as its record on fighting terrorism. 
 Sharif had on 21 September sought an international probe into what he described as “extrajudicial killings” in Indian Kashmir—in a reference to the unrest in the region following the death on 8 July of Burhan Wani, who India says was a <keyword id="50913" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hizbul-Mujahideen">Hizbul Mujahideen</keyword> group terrorist. 
Retaliating, Swaraj said- “I can only say that those accusing others of human rights violations would do well to introspect and see what egregious abuses they are perpetrating in their own country, including in Balochistan.” 
 
Mincing no words, Swaraj further said that in exchange of friendship with the neighbouring country, India always got terrorism in return — in the form of Pathankot, Uri and Bahadur Ali, and that it was time to isolate the country that has become a breeding ground for terrorists. 
She said, “Terrorists don’t have banks or factories of weapons. In that context, it is important to know who supports such terrorists? Afghanistan also raised this issue a few days back. Those who sow seeds of terrorism have to pay for it. There is no your or my terrorism – we cannot win the war against terrorism like that.” 
 
Swaraj hit out hard at Pakistan when she appealed to other nations to isolate Pakistan. “Isolate a nation that doesn’t want to be a part of the fight against terrorism. We have to isolate a country that sows, grows and sells terrorism. Such countries have to be held accountable. We have to take actions against a country that allows terrorists to hold public celebrations, without bringing them to justice. Such a country is equally responsible for terrorist activities,” Swaraj said. 
 
Kashmir is an integral part of India, she said, and will remain an integral part of India. “Pakistan should better stop dreaming about it.” 
 
Swaraj’s hard-hitting speech comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan over the decades-old Kashmir dispute that has triggered three of the four wars between the two countries. 
 The speech followed a sharp attack on Pakistan by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> on Saturday when he urged the people of Pakistan to “question their leadership on why, when both countries gained freedom together, while India exports software, Pakistan exports terrorists.” 
 
“I want to say that India is a ready for a war… India is a ready for a war on poverty. Let both countries fight to see who would eradicate poverty first… I want to tell the youth of Pakistan, let’s have a war on ending unemployment… I want to call out to the children in Pakistan, let’s declare war on illiteracy. Let’s see who wins. Let’s declare war on infant mortality and maternal deaths,” Modi had said in his speech at a rally in Kozhikode.
