No!</p><p><strong>Brad Schaeffer:</strong> No, no, no.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> "<keyword id="2114338" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bunions">Bunions</keyword> are caused by wearing heels." Leave your stilettos out of this. The stilettos did not cause your bunion.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> "Cutting the sides of my toenail will prevent an ingrown toenail." No, absolutely not.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> I am Dr. Sarah Haller. I am a <keyword id="31042" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="foot">foot</keyword> and ankle surgeon, and I practice in New York, New Jersey. I got into foot and ankle because I wanted to be a ballerina. I wanted so badly. But I was not that good, so I ended up being a doctor instead, and my feet definitely thank me.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> And I'm Dr. Brad Schaeffer. I'm a doctor of podiatric medicine. We treat everything below the knee. And today we will be debunking all the myths about feet.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> "Pedicures gave me toenail fungus."</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> I think yes and no. I mean, you can get fungus from anywhere. It can be in a carpet. So I can't prove that it's not going to happen here, but I can't prove that it will either. I definitely take precaution when I go to a pedicure salon. I bring my own nail polish. And if this is part of your self-care ritual, don't stop going, but at the same time, just be cautious. That's all.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> You can get toenail fungus from anywhere. Pedicures are safe if they're done in a safe, sterile environment.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> They do clean their instrumentation. They have these sanitary bags that go inside of the bathtub soaks, and that should be changed out between every person that comes through. So they do take precaution, but at the same time, again, anywhere there's a warm, hot, moist environment, it's like a breeding ground for fungus.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> "Cutting the sides of my toenail will prevent an ingrown toenail." No, absolutely not. When you cut your nail, you're supposed to cut it straight across. So, when you do that, the nail doesn't grow into the corner, creating an ingrown, which can create infection and a lot of pain.</p><p><strong>Haller: </strong>So, what everyone thinks, sometimes, is if they cut the actual nail round it'll grow out rounded. That's not true, because the actual nail matrix, where the nail grows from, from behind the actual skin, it actually grows as a square. You only see the rounded part. So by actually cutting it how you want it to grow, it's not going to change the actual root of it and how it's meant to grow.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> Right. I couldn't agree more. What's going to cause <keyword id="10549984" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ingrown-toenails">ingrown toenails</keyword> is your toenail. So, when that gets cut too short, it grows right into the corner of your skin. It's like a little pin. Once that starts penetrating the skin, it creates an infection. Pus, swelling, redness. Not a good look. It hurts. So just cut them straight across. You'll be in the clear.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> This is one I know I get all the time. Oh, gosh.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> All right. "You have warts because your feet are dirty." No!</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> No, no, no. You do not get warts because your feet are dirty. Warts are a virus. You get viruses from all kinds of things.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> Viruses can hide anywhere, and they just lay on surfaces. They can be on yoga mats, any kind of exercise equipment.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> Pools, gyms, showers. They're everywhere. But don't be afraid. Live your life. Just make sure you wear those shower shoes. Wipe down your mats if you're doing yoga or in a gym, and, you know, don't overly share your stuff.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> If you look at your feet, there are small cracks between each of these skin layers, and you don't even feel them. They're not bleeding, they're not cuts, they're just microscopic tears in your skin, and that's how the viruses get in.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> When you do get a wart, which ultimately is caused by a virus, that little wart can spread into a huge wart cluster. That's why you want to get checked out to make sure that that little thing can be treated real quick. When you come to our office, we do an acid treatment, and what the acid does is it really just eats down at the wart, so it exfoliates out the good skin and kills the virus. Sometimes there's a surgery that's needed and you actually pare out the wart, but if you get it checked early enough, you don't have to do that, and you can get it treated in one treatment.</p><p>I actually love this one. So, it's, "Only athletes get athlete's feet." That is a straight no! So, athlete's feet is actually a fungus, and it's called tinea pedis, right? So, when you have a fungus like that, usually it comes from warm, moist environments, a lot of times in our socks and shoes when we sweat. It's kind of like harboring a little petri dish in there. Once all that gets in there, it festers, and it can create a very good-looking environment for fungus, bacteria, all types of not-good things. That's why you're always told to change out your socks when they start getting sweaty. If you're just working and walking around every day, your feet can still sweat too. Not just athletes have those warm, moist environments. Everybody does. So change out your socks, change out your shoes, and use some powder from time to time. That'll help too.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> "Bunions are caused by wearing heels." No, absolutely not. Leave your stilettos out of this. The stilettos did not cause your bunion. Mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, somebody in your family, your family tree, passed it down to you.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> Baby you were born this way. [laughing]</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> A bunion is actually, it's not a bump growing off the side of your foot, which everyone seems to think. It's actually a deformity, meaning the bone behind your big toe is actually shifting from this straight-up-and-down position and tilting sideways.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> It's like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, right?</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> It's not the actual stiletto that's the problem. It may be worsened by wearing the stiletto where it pushes on the bunion and makes it bigger, but it's not actually caused by the actual shoe you're wearing. So what I tell patients that have bunions that they want to wear a cute stiletto, maybe go a little bit lower. So I recommend something where your actual bunion can maybe come out the side of it.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> You can definitely support and help bunions, right, but they're not just going to go away. They will develop throughout time and, unfortunately, sometimes get worse as we age.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> There's no way to get rid of a bunion without surgery.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> Those things out there called YogaToes, or, like, toe spacers, are out there to help us. But when you remove them, not doing much good, are they?</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> They're kind of like eyeglasses. They only work when you wear them.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> Very true. "My feet are fine because I trained them to walk in stilettos."</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> I think yes and no. I mean, I don't think they're good for you, but I definitely think you can train your feet, because you can get used to them. So, when you're wearing these things, your heel's going here, and it attaches to your Achilles, and that's what actually shortens. As you persistently wear these, over time, your Achilles gets shorter and shorter, which actually causes a ton of issues with the front of your foot. The insert's down here, this is where the ball of your foot is, and that's where all of the pressure goes, to five little bones in the base of your foot. So I do think you can kind of train your feet to walk in stilettos, but in no way, shape, or form is it good, healthy, or give you longevity. It's like a valet shoe. You know you're going to park, you're going to get out somewhere, you're going to walk for maybe two steps and sit down, that's a great shoe. But other than that, not a long-term shoe.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> "You can't do anything for a broken toe." Myth. We get this question all the time. Oh, my gosh! And it's frustrating. When you have a broken toe, that's a bone. You broke a bone in your foot. Right?</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> There's definitely stuff you can do for the broken toes. With a toe, it may not just be a simple fracture where the actual bone is cracked. You can actually dislocate it, which basically means not only is the bone cracked, but the ligaments are actually loosened up, so it pops over to the side. You need to get it popped back into place, and then it needs to really structurally be supported by the other toe beside it, otherwise it can re-dislocate and cause major issues down the line. So it's really important that you get your toe checked out if you think you may have fractured or even bumped it wrong, you see black and blue, you need to go in and have it buddy taped, basically when the toes can get taped together. Your doctor will teach you how to do it so it can safely heal. It takes four to six weeks for a bone to heal, so you better just get in there faster, and it should start healing in a natural process so it doesn't have to be a reset again.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> "It's normal for your feet to hurt from standing all day."</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> It is not normal. My feet kind of bark at the end of the day, especially when I'm in surgery for a long time, but, ultimately, we have tips and tools where your feet should not hurt at the end of the day.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> Supportive shoes, compression socks, inserts, all of these can help prevent fatigue.</p><p><strong> Schaeffer:</strong> We have to support our arches. I mean, they are critical for the stability of our feet. You have 26 bones and over 100 ligaments in the foot. There's a lot that can go wrong with our feet.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> Appropriate shoe gear is the key. None of these, like, flimsy shoes in the office. Anything with a good sole and especially with a little bit of a higher heel, so you have the nice support under your Achilles, I think really makes a big difference, especially if you're standing or walking all day. "</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> All inserts are the same."</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> Get this a lot.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> False. False! Absolutely no. My foot is way different than Dr. Brad's foot. We wouldn't need the same insert. And I'm sure your foot is different, and everybody has something else going on, so just getting an over-the-counter insert for some people is OK, but sometimes you need a custom one.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> Right. I mean, I couldn't agree more. So, if you look at my shoes, I just wear an over-the-counter insole. These insoles have nice arch support. These are game changers. And other people, they have bigger problems, so they need custom inserts, and those are called orthotics. And those are absolutely amazing too. So it really just depends.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> If you have big-toe arthritis, if you have arthritis in your midfoot, it helps a lot of arthritic conditions, which you may think is an old-person thing; young people can get arthritis too. So orthotics can help anybody, young to old. If you have really flat feet as a kid, those are really important to help stabilize the growth plates as the kid is growing.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> "Sprained ankles are no big deal." False!</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> Thank you. Yes, I agree.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> Dude, we get this a lot in our practice. When you sprain your ankle, there are so many things that can go wrong. So, there are three ligaments on the outside of your ankle, and when you roll it, they basically blow out. So what you have to do is you have to stabilize that ankle so the ligaments hold in a natural position. Other than that, it'll just grow back floppy and scarred down. So that's not going to be good for anyone, and you're not going to be able to play the sport that you love. So whenever you roll your ankle, you have to stabilize it so it heals normal.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> Yes. When it sprains, you also run the risk of the bones hitting into each other, so then that can cause cartilage damage. Cartilage damage is a really big thing, because if it happens and then you don't follow up, you're prone to early-onset arthritis, and arthritis is in no way good.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> "If I can walk after an injury, I don't need to see a doctor." False, absolutely false. Just no, no, no. This is not true.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> So, I had a patient come in last week. He fell off a porch while he was hanging out with friends. But he broke his ankle and had no idea. He walked on it for two weeks. When I showed him the X-ray, he was flabbergasted. He walked around for a week and a half without even knowing that he broke it.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> There's also a lot of patients that we see that don't necessarily feel their feet. Like diabetics out there, sometimes you get stuff called neuropathy, and that can be tingling, numbing, burning sensation in your feet, and you just don't feel those injuries. So it's important to just get it checked out by Dr. Sarah or I, and we'll tell you if there's any cause for concern.</p><p>We debunked a lot of myths here.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> We went through a lot, but definitely change your shoes regularly, make sure that you don't share shoes with each other, trim your toenails appropriately, and go and get things checked out. Don't wait until the last minute, 'cause it be broken even if you're still walking on it.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> Let's check my feet.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> Yeah. Oh, flexible.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> What?!</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> Yeah, I mean it's kind of --</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> That's pretty close.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> It is more impressive than I thought it was going to be.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> Oh, my gosh, I hurt my hip. Come on!</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> You need to stretch more, Brad.</p><p><strong>Schaeffer:</strong> I hurt my hip debunking these myths.</p><p><strong>Haller:</strong> You gotta stretch.</p>

Podiatrists debunk 12 feet myths

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Temu is the top app in the Google Play and Apple App stores, ahead of TikTok, Instagram, and Amazon.</li><li>The super cheap marketplace sells apparel, makeup, electronics, homeware, and even bongs.</li></ul><p>In just a few months, e-commerce app Temu has stormed its way to the top of the download charts and is gaining attention for its bargain prices, which are so low that some shoppers think the website must be a scam.</p><p>A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/post/preview?post_id=641c4989386467756f653e18&amp;mode=desktop">recent experience with an Insider reporter</a> ordering a basket of items showed that Temu is indeed legit, though he questioned the quality of certain items. And industry watchers say the company has a long way to go in terms of user experience – something that's crucial as it looks to take on the likes of Amazon. </p><p>Temu (pronounced<a href="https://www.temu.com/about-temu.html?refer_page_name=search_result&amp;refer_page_id=10009_1677680453466_9n785vv1nv&amp;refer_page_sn=10009&amp;_x_sessn_id=bkq1zijm2k" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> tee-moo</a>), which is headquartered in Boston but owned by Chinese firm PDD Holdings, launched in the US in September. It's listed as the top free app in both the <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps?gl=us" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Google Play store</a> and the <a href="https://apps.apple.com/us/charts/iphone" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Apple App Store</a>, ahead of TikTok, Amazon, and Instagram.</p><p>Similar to Amazon, it sells a vast array of items – ranging from fast fashion and makeup to electronics, homeware, and even bongs on both its website and app. It operates exclusively as a marketplace where sellers – who are predominantly based in China – sell goods to customers in the US and Canada. </p><p>So what do we know about the company and how does it keep its prices so low?</p><h2>'Shop like a billionaire'</h2><p>Temu created a buzz with its <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgNuwb9lpeg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Super Bowl ad</a> in February that showed a woman effortlessly purchasing various items on the Temu app on her phone. The tagline, "shop like a billionaire," suggested that shoppers can buy whatever they want without worrying about the cost. </p><p>"The idea is you can just keep running your credit card because your budget can afford it," Michael Felice, associate partner in the communications, media, and technology practice of consulting firm Kearney, told Insider.</p><p>It's clear from the homepage of Temu's website that the main focus is price. Graphics advertise a range of promotions on the site, and each item has a listed price and a percentage discount next to it. This is often as much as 80% off. A spokesperson for Temu did not confirm how these percentages are calculated. </p><h2>What brands does Temu sell?</h2><p>There aren't many recognizable western brands to shop on Temu. No results come up, for example, for Adidas, Apple, or Urban Decay – though when you search for the latter, a <a href="https://www.temu.com/1pc-12-colors-makeup-nude-colors-eyeshadow-palette-natural-nude-matte-shimmer-glitter-pigment-eye-shadow-pallete-set-waterproof-smokey-professional-beauty-makeup-kit-g-601099512205658.html?top_gallery_url=https%3A%2F%2Fimg.kwcdn.com%2Fproduct%2Fenhanced_images%2F3831c9dda7a3f0dd351942930d078f2c_enhanced.jpg&amp;spec_gallery_id=7320655&amp;refer_page_sn=10009&amp;refer_source=10022&amp;freesia_scene=2&amp;search_key=urban%20decay&amp;refer_page_el_sn=200049&amp;refer_page_name=search_result&amp;refer_page_id=10009_1678116880354_pgurqhzklr&amp;_x_sessn_id=zj8wsktw2m" target="_blank" rel="noopener">listing</a> comes up for an eyeshadow palette similar to its famous Naked palette.</p><div type="image" title="Eyeshadow palette on temu's website" height="1140" width="2136" msid="98946578" hostid="261"></div>There are other examples of apparent knockoff products: a search for Victoria's Secret's Pink brand pulled up a host of bags showing the "Pink" label, without any reference to the US brand in the listing. On both the Apple and Google app stores, Temu has a 4.6-star rating.</p><h2>Cutting out the middleman saves costs</h2><p>Temu says its "next-gen manufacturing model" – whereby it shares data on what consumers are shopping for and searching for on its site with its third-party sellers – helps to keep prices low. This enables sellers to better predict trends, plan production, and therefore reduce the risk of overproducing items that consumers don't want. These cost savings can then be passed on to the consumer, a spokesperson for Temu told Insider.</p><p>But experts say there are other factors contributing to its bargain prices. Most of the sellers are based in China, where manufacturing and labor costs are lower, and the manufacturer-to-consumer business model means that there's no middleman in the chain to take a slice of profits. Temu also provides sellers with free tools like access to its photo studios to ensure content on the site looks aesthetically similar. </p><p>"Temu is exposing a white space in the market wherein brands have been producing at extreme low cost – but along the value chain, there's so much incremental cost," Felice said. In other words, most manufacturers sell through so many layers of middlemen — each of whom wants their cut — that by the time an item is offered to a consumer, it's loaded up with add-on costs; with Temu, the middlemen are cut out of the process.</p><p>But for the average North American shopper, such low prices can actually be disconcerting, especially when they don't know much about Temu. </p><p>"With a site like Amazon, there's a degree of confidence … if something goes wrong, they've got your back," Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, told Insider. "I think with Temu, people don't have that confidence because it's not as well known," he added.</p><p>The low prices, combined with the fact that many of its items are shipped to the US from China, "automatically raises suspicions over whether it's genuine or not," Saunders said. Some Twitter users have expressed concerns that the site could be a "<a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=temu%20scam&amp;src=typed_query" target="_blank" rel="noopener">scam</a>."</p><p>Erica Miller, a YouTuber who runs the account OneCuteCouponer, showing shoppers how to use coupons and get the best deals online, told Insider that she first heard about Temu from her 16-year-old niece. "Immediately, I thought it was a scam," she said. "Even though I'm a bargain shopper, I still wasn't convinced."</p><p>Temu later contacted Miller – who is known for posts on discount retail – to make a sponsored video for her subscriber base. Miller was given up to $140 to spend on Temu and paid to post a video on her YouTube channel, reviewing her purchases. She ordered a bunch of products including apparel, kitchen tools, and an LED clock, and said she was impressed by the quality of these items.</p><p>"The price scares people at first, of course you think it's a scam, but once you know someone who's using Temu and getting all these bargains, everyone is hooked," Miller said. </p><h2>"You get what you pay for" when it comes to quality</h2><p>Insider's Danni Santana was also skeptical and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/post/preview?post_id=641c4989386467756f653e18&amp;mode=desktop">recently tested shopping on the site</a>, ordering four items, including a charging cable and a handheld electric blender. He concluded that while Temu isn't a scam, as all the items he ordered showed up, the quality of the products he ordered wasn't great. </p><p>His sentiments are shared by other consumers online:</p><p>"The quality is so bad that u wouldn't buy it for a dollar at the dollar store," one shopper <a href="https://www.bbb.org/us/ma/boston/profile/online-shopping/temucom-0021-553943/customer-reviews" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> in a review on the Better Business Bureau's website. "You get what you pay for," another shopper <a href="https://www.bbb.org/us/ma/boston/profile/online-shopping/temucom-0021-553943/customer-reviews" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. </p><p>The company currently has a 2.09-star rating out of five on the BBB. Though there are positive reviews, its rating has dropped slightly since earlier in the month. There's also a new alert on the BBB page, informing shoppers that most items are shipped from China despite Temu being registered in the US. </p><p>In other reviews on BBB's site, consumers say they are frustrated by Temu's lengthy shipping times and the overwhelming amount of marketing emails they received once making an order – Insider's Santana shared similar grievances in his Temu review.</p><p>Temu <a href="https://www.temu.com/shipping-info.html?_x_sessn_id=bkq1zijm2k&amp;refer_page_name=about-temu&amp;refer_page_id=10027_1677680458290_vaezgz6dq9&amp;refer_page_sn=10027" target="_blank" rel="noopener">says</a> that customers should expect to wait between 7 and 15 business days for delivery, as most items are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/temu-chinese-shopping-app-becomes-most-popular-ecommerce-app-us-2023-1">shipped from China</a> – though it notes that this is mostly free. It also offers an express delivery option that adds $12.90 to an order. A spokesperson for Temu told Insider that it uses its parent company's supply chain and logistics network to ship these items.</p><p>If orders are running late, it<a href="https://www.temu.com/support/c3/why-is-there-no-tracking-update-f-49-s-154.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> says</a> it will give customers a small store credit, and free returns are available within 90 days of ordering.</p><p>But given that Americans are accustomed to Amazon's same-day or next-day delivery service and free returns, it could be a challenge for Temu to compete, Felice said.</p><h2><strong>The website 'feels a little makeshift'</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Temu penguin soft toy listing" height="1128" width="1504" msid="98946582" hostid="261"></div>Saunders said that Temu is currently hell-bent on driving app downloads. As well as its huge Super Bowl spot, <a href="https://www.temu.com/affiliate_seeding_entry.html?refer_page_name=home&amp;refer_page_id=10005_1678200708890_tlberkcgfm&amp;refer_page_sn=10005&amp;_x_sessn_id=zy0jcrzuuy&amp;is_back=1&amp;no_cache_id=3kqmn" target="_blank" rel="noopener">it's recruiting influencers</a> to promote the brand with offers of commission and free products. Temu is also asking users to encourage their friends to download the app and use a code <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=temu%20code&amp;src=typed_query" target="_blank" rel="noopener">with the promise of free items</a>.<p>But despite the efforts to drive customers to the app, its interface is letting the side down, experts say. </p><p>"I think the visual merchandising of the site doesn't really meet what Americans are used to," Felice said, adding that it was "overwhelming to the senses … and sometimes feels a little makeshift."</p><p>A search on its website doesn't always produce you the results you'd expect. Other items have confusingly long descriptions.</p><p>Felice says it will take more than heavy discounting to woo the American consumer.</p><p>"We make that sacrifice occasionally in some off-price shopping, because it becomes a scavenger hunt. But there's always the question, is it too cheap to be good? Since I like to stay busy, I've now worked at several different stores at my local mall in Arizona for about four years - including an electronics store, a department store, and now a café. </p><p>There are tons of rude people everywhere, and I've been dealing with that since I had my own dental practice. But I think it's getting worse.</p><p>I think some of it's the pandemic. I think some of it is entitlement, from both older and younger people. Everybody works on their own time schedule, and their time is the most important in the world.</p><p>Usually, 99% of the customers I work with are good, and 1% of the people are rude and obnoxious. The 1% cause 99% of your problems. The incidents range from general customer complaints to targeted harassment.</p><p>Recently, at the café I work at, a customer wanted to know where we get the plastic for our bags of nuts and if it's ethically sourced. We sold the customer a bag of almonds anyway, and they said, "Well, where did these almonds come from? You should know." </p><p>Halfway through the bag, they said, "I found a peanut!" I swear they took the peanut out of their pocketbook so they wouldn't have to pay for the almonds.</p><p>"This is horrible," they said. "You people shouldn't be selling this stuff."</p><p>I explained that we were sorry if there was a peanut in there; there shouldn't be, and nobody else had ever found one.</p><p>"Well, I don't care," they said. "I'm never coming back here."</p><p>That was fine with me. </p><p>I recently left a department store where we had a bunch of people complain about things they knew the floor workers couldn't fix.</p><p>"Why don't you have this?" they'd ask. Well, because we don't have that. Someone higher than us has chosen these items. We have 1,500 items in the store, and we don't have your foot-bunion slicer. Then they're annoyed, and then they become rude about it.</p><p>People have even made nasty comments about ethnicity. Once, I mentioned I'm from New York and someone said, "You must understand bargaining," or something like that. What he was getting at was that I'm Jewish and all Jewish people bargain. </p><p>When I worked at the electronics store, there was an employee who is deaf, but he could read lips - so long as he could see them.  </p><p>"When you talk to me, just face me," he told one customer.</p><p>They responded: "You're handicapped. I don't want somebody who's handicapped. I want somebody who can hear me."</p><p>He said: "That's fine, I'll find somebody that'll be able to hear you." So, he walks over to another employee and introduces her and explains the situation. That employee, who happens to be blind, goes, "Perfect. I'm blind, but I'll be able to help you."</p><p>The customer stormed out of the store. It was a common occurrence there - people would scream their way out of the store all the time. </p><p>Many would also say, "I own stock in your company. I own a lot of stock. You should be treating me better."</p><p>"Well if you own more than 400,000 shares, which is what I own, maybe we can discuss it," I responded once. "How many shares do you have?"</p><p>You get more with honey than you do with vinegar, and most people don't understand that. People also often ignore the fact that they're being rude and obnoxious to <keyword id="12229465" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="service-workers" source="Orion">service workers</keyword>, who bear the brunt of customers' problems with a company or chain and get paid the least to do it.</p><p>Some people are nice, and those are the ones you'll do anything to help. The others will leave disappointed, and they'll leave a trail of insults and emotional harm behind them.</p>

I've worked in retail for 4 years. I've seen firsthand how customer treatment of employees is getting worse.

<p>Diane Guerrero is giving me a tattoo tour. It's a scorching August day in Manhattan, and we're seated outside the Bowery Hotel during the weekday lunch rush. The 36-year-old actor is dressed for the weather in an airy, floral midi skirt, large sunglasses, and a black cropped tank that shows off her ink.</p><p>Guerrero points to one tattoo — a pair of lips holding a rose — that she's always thought looks like a vulva. (She's right.) Another, on her forearm, depicts a skeleton holding cotton candy. An acquaintance at UC Irvine first introduced Guerrero to the term, and while she wanted to get the more widely used QTPOC (queer and trans people of color), the acquaintance discouraged her because of Guerrero's gender identity and sexuality at the time.</p><p>But Guerrero has more clarity now, and it might be time for an update. Ideally, they'll all live on a farm. Guerrero laughs at how eager she thinks she sounds. "Please write that in a way that doesn't make me sound like I fetishize the idea," she says.</p></blockquote><p>Guerrero broke into Hollywood as inmate Maritza Ramos on the critically acclaimed Netflix drama "Orange Is the New Black" and later played Lina Santillan on "Jane the Virgin," opposite Gina Rodriguez. Her most recent roles in "Encanto" and "Doom Patrol" have earned her even more visibility. As her profile has risen, Guerrero has arrived at a place of ease and self-acceptance, and she's exploring new facets of her identity. She's repairing her relationships with her family. And she's reexamining what it means to be successful. "I used to look at social media and be like, 'I'm behind,'" she says. "All these people are doing all these projects, and you need to get there. That means you have to work really hard. That means you can't take vacations. That means you have to do things you don't want to do."</p><p>"I don't believe that now," she tells me. "I feel like I have my life, and I want to devote it to art and connecting with people and my ancestors. I want to work on being OK for that last moment of fleshy breath." </p><h2><strong>Guerrero says the trauma of her parents' deportation shaped not only her early life, but how she saw her career </strong></h2><p>For years, Guerrero felt a constant need to prove herself. She was born in Passaic, New Jersey to undocumented Colombian parents, and although money was tight, her childhood was filled with seaside outings, music, and home-cooked meals. Still, being the child of immigrants took a toll. "I spent all my life trying to live up to this fake expectation they implanted in us: that the closer we were to whiteness, the more valuable we were," she says.</p><p>The move to the US wasn't easy for her parents, Guerrero says, but they were convinced America had more to offer than their native Colombia. "Of course they saw the US as democracy and freedom," Guerrero says. "Like, 'We can come here and clean houses, and we still get to be happy.' Do you get to be happy, though?"</p><p>She pauses, considering her question.</p><p>"At 69, my dad was diagnosed with mesothelioma," a type of soft-tissue cancer, Guerrero says. "You get that through asbestos. Thank you, American dream." </p><p>The facade of America as utopia truly crumbled when Guerrero was 14. Years after the family had left New Jersey for the suburbs of Boston, both of her parents were deported, along with her older half-brother, leaving Guerrero alone and adrift. Her parents did not return to the US, and Guerrero had to travel to Colombia to see them. </p><p>Friends and family members took her in until she left for college, and her high-school humanities teacher, Abdi Ali, says that Guerrero never spoke about her parents' absence. "It was only after she graduated that I understood the depth of what she had gone through," he says. But as Guerrero herself later explained, her childhood was effectively over. She first spoke publicly about her experience in a viral 2014 <a href="https://www.latimes.com/nation/la-oe-guerrero-immigration-family-separation-20141116-story.html">op-ed</a> for The Los Angeles Times, and shared more about the ordeal in her memoir, published two years later.</p><div type="image" title="Actress Diane Gurrero for Insider's September cover" height="3431" width="2500" msid="94647993" hostid="261"></div><p>Despite the trauma Guerrero experienced, Ali says she remained dedicated to developing her craft. He credits Guerrero's interest in acting in part to reading Shakespeare with him after school, at times carrying on full conversations in iambic pentameter. Now, the two usually talk about once a week, with Guerrero sending her former teacher funny memes and Instagram DMs. </p><p>Ali says he's beyond proud of Guerrero's trajectory. "When I watch her on the screen, there's a sense in which the whole world is possible," he says. "I think its genesis is in part from this sharp, traumatic, cataclysmic sense of displacement, which millions of people experience." </p><p>For a long time, her parents' deportation shaped the way Guerrero thought about her work. "I spent so much time trying to establish myself and prove to the world that I was worthy — that they made a mistake when they separated my family," she says. </p><p>She also felt pressure to send money to her large extended family in Colombia for things like dental work, rent, and medical care. And while she says she was overjoyed to be able to provide for her relatives, the constant pull led to her taking jobs, including promoting bunion treatments on Instagram, that weren't fulfilling. </p><p>Guerrero says the constant need to make money felt like a tool of oppression. Capitalism "is all about worrying about things you cannot control. That's how they keep this hamster wheel going," she says. "I don't wanna be a fucking hamster in that wheel anymore."</p><p>These days Guerrero is "no longer living in survival mode," so she can be more selective about the kind of work she takes on. She's reserving her energy for projects that genuinely inspire her. "Why don't I try doing something that's going to move the needle? Take care of myself first, and do things that I really love, and see what that generates?"</p><h2><strong>The recent death of Guerrero's father was shattering, but ultimately helped repair her relationship with her mother<br /></strong></h2><p>Guerrero's frantic pace early in her career had other costs. It took away from her time with her father, Hector, with whom she was extremely close, and who died of cancer earlier this year. "I could have been happy just doing nothing with dad," she says. "Going to the mountains. Going to watch a movie. Calling him."</p><p>Guerrero's Instagram is dotted with photos of her and her father in Colombia. One photo, posted in 2020, shows Guerrero kissing Hector's cheek on a boat in the middle of the ocean. Another, posted after Hector's death, features Guerrero sitting with her arms around him. "I know you are still with me," the caption reads.</p><p>Her father's passing left Guerrero shattered. It also changed the way she thinks about death. "I don't want to live like death doesn't exist," she explains. "I want to live like I know death is right next to me. Like, 'Hey, death. What's up, babe?'" </p><div type="image" title="Actress Diane Gurrero for Insider's September cover" height="1919" width="2500" msid="94647995" hostid="261"></div><p>Guerrero was raised Catholic, but her belief in reincarnation offers her some solace. She and her dad are "energetically linked forever, and his energy ain't going nowhere," she says, smiling. "He's gonna come back to me somehow. I don't know what way that is yet — hint, hint, my children — but I know he'll be back in human form in some way." </p><p>Her dad's passing also changed her relationship with her mother, <strong>Margoth</strong>, who was forced to miss milestones in Guerrero's life, including her first period and her first time shopping for a bra. At the time, Guerrero wrote in her memoir, she resented her mother.</p><p>As Guerrero got older, however, she and Margoth began to work on their relationship. And while Hector's death was unbearable, Guerrero says caring for her sick father alongside her mother helped soften the years of resentment. Shortly after Hector died, Guerrero had a dream in which he physically placed her mother next to her. "To me, he was saying, 'It's time for you and your mother to live the relationship that both of you have always wanted,'" she says.</p><div type="image" title="Actress Diane Gurrero for Insider's September cover" height="1875" width="2500" msid="94647997" hostid="261"></div><p>Now Guerrero speaks of her mother with pure admiration, pulling out her phone to show me photos of <strong>Margoth</strong> in cycling attire standing proudly next to a mountain bike on a dirt road. <strong>Margoth</strong> often wakes up at 5 or 6 a.m. to bike, Guerrero says, and has finally embraced her gray hair instead of dying it every month.</p><p>"My mother has evolved so much," Guerrero says. "Her outlook on the world is totally different. She is spiritual — she trusts the universe. She's embracing all that is hers." </p><h2><strong>Guerrero says her sexuality and her view of the future is 'evolving' </strong></h2><p>Guerrero's own spirituality seems to have eased any fear she has about her future. But there are still bumps ahead, especially when it comes to her relationship. </p><p>Guerrero and Crawford have been together for five years and have two dogs (Penelope Cruz, a feisty Chihuahua, and Sally, a mellow black Lab). "He's smart as hell. He's funny," she says of Crawford. "He's a Gemini, he's from Missouri, and he's a lover of music." The couple recently became a "writing team" — Guerrero tells me they want to "tell stories together."</p><p>But then Guerrero pauses for a breath, and her mood shifts.</p><p>"I don't know if I want to talk about this," she says after a moment. "But we are seeing how we can evolve in our relationship. "Right now, we're exploring the question of: Do all relationships get stale? What do you do to revive them? What do you do to evolve with them? Whether it's through ethical non-monogamy or polyamory, what does that look like?"</p><p>"I want to be free," she continues. "I wanna be in a life and in a family where I feel free to explore myself and others."</p><p>To supplement their work in therapy, the couple are reading books like "Sex at Dawn," which proposes a new approach to monogamy, and "Pleasure Activism," which explores how social-justice work can be joyful and fulfilling. So far, Guerrero has been most struck by the fact that non-monogamy isn't a new or even a particularly radical idea. "Before the colonizers came, women would have babies with different men of the tribe, and everyone was happy," she says. "It's like, yeah, shit, that makes a lot of sense to me." </p><p><strong>TK VIDEO EMBED CODE</strong></p><p>Our conversation begins to wind down, and I find myself feeling meditative and relaxed. Chatting with Guerrero has that effect. No matter the topic, she seems at ease and sure of herself — like she finally knows where she's going and isn't too caught up in how she'll get there.</p><p>I ask Guerrero where she sees herself in ten years, and she leans across the table to answer. "I want to be truthful," she says. "I didn't trust anyone to be honest growing up because I was so traumatized. If I told anyone my truth, that meant my parents would get arrested or people would judge me."</p><p>"But I want to be painting. I want to be doing yoga and swimming and foraging for mushrooms," Guerrero continues. "I wanna trip on acid when I'm 60. I don't wanna worry about my looks. I don't wanna spend my fucking life in the gym if it doesn't feel good. I don't wanna worry about keeping up with the Joneses."</p><p>She sits back in her chair and smiles. "I wanna be that old lady who walks around with a bunch of bangles," she says. "I wanna make noise when I walk by, in a long muumuu, naked underneath, just vibing."</p>

High heels are often painful creations that are typically more difficult to walk in than the average flat, making it difficult to escape dangerous situations. </p><p>"You only need to spend a few minutes on the internet these days to see that, yes, there are quite a lot of times when, unfortunately, it would help to be able to run," Renee Engeln, a professor of psychology at Northwestern University, told The Times. </p><p>"Men have no clue that this is something a lot of women think of," shoe designer Eree Kim said on the topic of making shoes that women can defend themselves in. </p><p>Still, ditching heels isn't simply a strategy to fend off sexual violence for most. Cannes was<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/afp-cannes-apologises-over-high-heel-furore-2015-5"> forced to apologize</a> in 2015 after women wearing flats were reportedly turned away from a viewing of Carol. And, <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/work/temp-worker-sent-home-from-pwc-job-for-not-wearing-high-heels/">temp worker Nicola Thorp</a> petitioned the British government to make it illegal for companies to require women to wear heels to work. </p><p>The Times reports that people often gravitate towards heels during times of heightened anxiety. Post-9/11, flats and sneakers sky-rocketed in prominence after a peak of high heel popularity. </p><p>Women's political power and unequal treatment have dominated headlines over the last year. High heels are in danger of extinction as sexual harassment and assault allegations skyrocket

He did not go for a run. </p><p>Every day for the the past 52 years - 19,032 days, to be exact - Hill laced up his shoes and ran at least one mile. In fact, during this stretch (the longest recorded running streak in history), Hill would typically run something closer two and a half miles; it was only in 1993, one day after he broke his sternum in a head-on car accident, that he could only manage one mile. </p><p>Hill, who is British, suffers from an undiagnosed heart condition. Over the weekend, tragically, his condition forced him to call his run quits after just 400 meters on Sunday. </p><p><span>"[M]y heart started to hurt and over the last 800 meters, the problem got worse and worse. I thought I might die but just made it to one mile in 16 minutes and 34 seconds. There was no other option but to stop. I owed that to my wife, family and friends, plus myself," he said in a statement. </span></p><p> </p><p>Hill won the Boston Marathon in 1970 with a time of 2:10:30, a new course record at the time. He competed in three Olympics (1964, 1968, 1972), and has run 115 marathons. <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2017/01/30/the-longest-running-streak-ever-ended-saturday-at-19032-days/?utm_term=.b99191005284">As the Washington Post noted</a>, Hill finished all but three of those marathons in under 2 hours and 50 minutes. </p><p>Streak runners, as they are called, keep track of the consecutive days in which they run a minimum one mile. It's impossible to fully know how long certain streaks last, and the honor system is important, but Hill's streak is by all accounts the longest ever, and one of the most impressive.</p><p><a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2017/01/30/the-longest-running-streak-ever-ended-saturday-at-19032-days/?utm_term=.b99191005284">From the Washington Post:</a></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>"When [the streak] reached 50 years, </span><a href="http://www.runnersworld.com/newswire/ron-hills-running-streak-hits-50-years">he told Runner's World</a><span> that the most serious threat to his mark came in 1993 when he broke his sternum in a car accident. A week later, he abandoned the canes and continued his daily streak in a special cast."</span></p><p><span>Now that Hill had to take a day off, the new longest active running streak belongs to a Californian named Jon Sutherland. From our shoulders to big toes, running is a full-body workout. </p><p>Here are the primary muscle groups that work together to propel you on a run — and exercises to help protect them from injury. </p><h2>Quads </h2><p>The quads are composed of four muscles at the front of the thigh: the vastus intermedius, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, and rectus femoris. Three of them work together so you can extend your knee during each stride.</p><div type="image" title="quad muscles" height="777" width="1113" msid="78410596" hostid="261"></div><p>Of the four muscles, the rectus femoris is often what contributes to running injury. This muscle crosses the hip joint, meaning it's also a key muscle for bending the hip.</p><p>So when the rectus femoris gets tight, it restricts hip motion. To compensate, people may swing the leg far in front of them and use the hip flexors to advance forward. This can cause overuse and pain in the front of the hip. </p><p>"Basically, it's gonna slow you down and make you feel like your legs are quite heavy when you're too quad-dominant," says Robyn Pester, MS, ATC, CSCS, an Oregon physical therapist and the founder of <a href="https://www.runnersrehabfix.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Runner's Rehab Fix</a>.</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-run-properly" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Proper running</a> technique requires that the foot is directly aligned with the pelvis when it strikes the ground to run most efficiently.</p><h3>How to prevent injury</h3><p>When stretching, it's crucial to consider the quads along with the entire front of the hip so you can ensure you're stretching the rectus femoris. To begin, try laying on your side and pulling one foot to your glutes. </p><div type="image" title="Quad stretch" height="1991" width="3982" msid="78325549" hostid="261"></div><p>You can also begin at a half-kneel, tucking the pelvis underneath you, and pulling the foot to your glutes. For a more advanced version, try the same at a standing position and remember to tuck the pelvis. </p><div type="image" title="Quad stretch" height="3168" width="4224" msid="78325557" hostid="261"></div><p>Pester also recommends regularly foam-rolling the quads, while adding movements like flexing, extending, and rotating the leg — these small additions will help build overall stability during runs.</p><h2>Hip flexors</h2><p>The hip flexors help drive us forward, so sprinters need especially powerful ones to accelerate down the track. There are five hip flexor muscles, four of which are located at the pelvis. </p><div type="image" title="hip flexor muscles" height="777" width="1112" msid="78410597" hostid="261"></div><p>The iliopsoas is the most notorious, Pester says, because it is commonly weak and associated with hip pain. This specific hip flexor runs from the lower back to the hip and is critical in stabilizing the back whenever you're sitting or standing upright.</p><p>You need to maintain a balance of strength between the hip flexors, glutes, and hamstrings, otherwise you can overuse the former and end up with strain in the front of the hip, most likely the iliopsoas. In that case, it doesn't help to stretch an already overworked muscle, Pester says. Instead, look for positions that work the glutes and hamstrings, as well.</p><h3>How to prevent injury</h3><p>A helpful stretch for tight hip flexors: </p><ol><li>Get into a half-kneeling position</li><li>Tuck your pelvis underneath you </li><li>Lean forward from your hip</li><li>Bring the arm from that side overhead and breath deeply</li></ol><p>Hold for 30 seconds and repeat two to three times. </p><div type="image" title="hip flexor stretch" height="2380" width="3173" msid="78325568" hostid="261"></div><h2>Hamstrings </h2><p>These muscles attach to the pelvis and run down to the back of the knee. The hamstrings primarily help with bending the knee while running, Pester says, but they also assist with hip extension.</p><div type="image" title="hamstring muscles" height="777" width="1112" msid="78410599" hostid="261"></div><p>When a runner lacks proper hip extension, they can overuse the hamstrings and develop a condition called <a href="https://www.aapmr.org/about-physiatry/conditions-treatments/musculoskeletal-medicine/tendinopathy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tendinopathy</a>, where the tendons in the muscle begin to break down. Tendinopathy in the lower body is highly common in regular runners, Pester says. Symptoms include swelling and pain around the affected muscles and bones.</p><p>If you think you have tendinopathy, it's best not stretch the already worn-out muscle. Instead, you should consider consulting a physical therapist to determine the root of the cause. They may have you try the <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/labor-and-delivery/multimedia/pelvic-tilt-exercise/img-20006410" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pelvic tilt exercise</a> to assess whether you feel pain from the front, back, or either side of your body. In that case, it could mean your form is off and you're leaning your pelvis in a certain direction. Pester says that strengthening your core should help.</p><h2>Calves</h2><p>The calves are composed of two primary muscles: the larger gastrocnemius and the soleus beneath it. These help you push your feet off the ground during each stride. </p><div type="image" title="calve muscles" height="791" width="1112" msid="78410602" hostid="261"></div><p>When hip flexors are tight or the glutes are weak, the calves will kick in to help push you off the ground. This can cause overuse and injury. </p><p>Mishandling the calves can affect surrounding tissues and reduce ankle mobility, provoking <keyword id="64101" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="injuries">injuries</keyword> like: </p><ul><li><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/achilles-tendinitis/symptoms-causes/syc-20369020" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Achilles tendinitis,</a> which occurs with overuse of the Achilles tendon</li><li><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/plantar-fasciitis/symptoms-causes/syc-20354846" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Plantar fasciitis</a>, or the inflammation of a tissue band within the foot </li><li><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/metatarsalgia/symptoms-causes/syc-20354790" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Metatarsalgia</a>, which occurs with inflammation in the ball of the foot </li></ul><h3>How to prevent injury </h3><p>You can increase calf flexibility using a <a href="https://www.livestrong.com/article/386696-slant-board-for-calf-stretch/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">slant board</a>. Try to maintain your running posture and stretch for three minutes on this device, Pester says. If you feel pinching in the front of the joint, you may have a related joint dysfunction at the hip or ankle and the stretch is therefore ineffective. In that case, you may need to see a sports therapist. </p><p>If you don't have a slant board, you can still stretch the calves: </p><ol><li>Place your hands against a wall. </li><li>Push off with the back leg while driving your big toe into the ground. </li><li>To intensify this move, stick a door wedge under the big toe.</li></ol><p>Hold for 30 seconds and repeat two to three times on each leg. </p><div type="image" title="Calf muscles" height="2510" width="3347" msid="78325577" hostid="261"></div><h2>Glutes </h2><p>The glutes are composed of three main muscles: the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus. They work in tandem with smaller muscles like the lateral rotators, which are finger-sized and originate at the hip. All these muscles work together to distribute the force of impact evenly across the hips, says Pester. </p><div type="image" title="glute muscles" height="777" width="1112" msid="78410607" hostid="261"></div><p>When running, the gluteus maximus extends the hip when pushing off the ground, while the medius and minimus push our weight to the opposite side. On the way back down, the medius and minimus control the motion of the pelvis and prevent it from dropping.</p><p>Glute injuries frequently result from weak glutes, Pester says. If underutilized glutes can't transition us from one leg to the other while jogging, the hamstrings, hip flexors, or deep lateral rotators may step in. When other muscles compensate for glute imbalances, you may end up with hamstring injuries or piriformis syndrome, which occurs when the largest lateral rotator <a href="https://journals.lww.com/acsm-csmr/Fulltext/2015/01000/Piriformis_Syndrome__A_Cause_of_Nondiscogenic.12.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">squeezes</a> the nerve that runs from the lower back into the legs.</p><h3>How to prevent injury </h3><p>To address weak glutes and avoid damaging surrounding muscles, Pester says, you need to determine your lower body's current range of motion. Before you even try glute-specific exercises, it's  important to work on hip extension — do this by <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/fitness/multimedia/stretching/sls-20076840?s=5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stretching</a> and foam rolling the hip flexors on the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2CmI2nIchE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">side of the hips</a> and the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WQ0e2EORX4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">upper leg</a>. Then, move on to hip extension exercises that engage the gluteus maximus. </p><p>For example, try the modified bird-dog: </p><ol><li>Start on all fours with a neutral pelvis. </li><li>Breathe in and out and tighten your abdominals.</li><li>Straighten the right leg out at about 30 degrees, while keeping the left leg bent on the ground. </li><li>Make sure that the low back and pelvis stay engaged and slightly turn in the toe and heel. </li><li>Lower and repeat ten times.</li></ol><p>Complete two to three sets on each leg. </p><div type="image" title="Glute exercise" height="1991" width="3982" msid="78325580" hostid="261"></div><p>Hip abduction exercises help engage the gluteus medius and minimus. An example would be: </p><ol><li>Laying on your right side with the right knee bent in front of you and the left leg straight in the air at a 45-degree angle. </li><li>Inhale, then on the exhale lift your left leg toward the ceiling. You should feel this on the top of your glute. Try not to use your back or the front of your hip while moving your leg. </li><li>Slowly lower the leg to the start position, inhale. </li></ol><p>Repeat ten times on each leg for two to three sets.</p><div type="image" title="Hip abduction exercise" height="1991" width="3982" msid="78325582" hostid="261"></div><h2>Core </h2><p>With runners, Pester focuses on what is called the intrinsic core. It includes: </p><ul><li>The diaphragm, which is the muscle that helps you inflate and deflate your lungs</li><li>The pelvic floor muscles </li><li>The transversus abdominis which is a muscular sheet on the abdominal wall. </li></ul><div type="image" title="core muscles 2" height="838" width="1112" msid="78410609" hostid="261"></div><p>There are also larger muscles like the rectus abdominis and the obliques. </p><div type="image" title="core muscles" height="777" width="1112" msid="78410611" hostid="261"></div><p>The core, particularly the intrinsic region, helps runners keep their balance as they jog. It's important to strengthen the intrinsic core to ensure that the entire group is balanced and isn't overpowered by exterior muscles like the obliques, Pester says.</p><h3>How to prevent injury </h3><p>To work the delicate muscles of the deep core, Pester recommends incorporating dynamic balancing exercises with resistance bands or tubing attached to the wall. Because I should be able to lose 5 kilos by next weekend or maybe I’d better wear it now before everyone goes and buys it. 7. <strong>A pair of cyborg arms to attach to your own two flesh-and-blood ones:</strong> An absolute must for the three hours that you have in the evening, after coming back from work and before going to bed. With this invention, multitasking would be a breeze — draw a diagram for your daughter’s project, throw some marinated chicken into the oven, make the husband’s favorite gin and tonic which apparently doesn’t taste the same when he makes it himself, and slather on the heavily advertised de-wrinkling face pack that will make you look 10 years younger in 10 minutes. After a while, you may wonder how you even did it all earlier with just two arms.<br />

8. <strong>A camera with an inbuilt projector embedded in the retina:</strong> To be used on men with convenient amnesia whenever they say that they have absolutely no recollection of agreeing to a particular thing. This blanket statement covers everything from taking the dog to the vet, visiting our second cousin Chunna and going to see a play called Vagina Monologues. Just turn your steely gaze to a blank wall and replay that particular recorded incident with the date and time as irrevocable proof.<br />

10.<strong> A chill pill:</strong> As I sat alone to write this piece, I heard the old clamouring in my head, telling me that I should spend this time reading a book to the baby, checking on my son’s homework or looking into the man of the house’s dinner, and that I can get back to my task once they don’t need me and have gone to bed.<br />

We are so busy being mothers, daughters, sisters, and wives that the time we spend on ourselves, on our work, is laced with self-reproach.
