In the backdrop of less state transport buses and crumbling system, the road and transport ministry has sought a grant of Rs 2,500 crore in <keyword id="2783177" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Budget-2016">Budget 2016</keyword>.<br />
<br />
The ministry wants to double state transport buses and the issue might be taken up on a pari passu basis with an equal amount allocation from the respective states.<br />
<br />
It is worth mentioning that only 5 per cent of the country's population use state transport buses.<br />
<br />
The proposal also assumes significance in the wake of government mulling conversion of about 1.5 lakh diesel buses run by state transport corporations into electric buses.<br />
<br />
"We have 1.5 lakh buses of state road transport corporations. It is our effort to convert 1.5 lakh diesel buses into electric battery-operated buses which will reduce Rs 8 lakh crore bill on import of crude and petroleum and would also help in making India pollution free," said Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari.<br />

Also, Gadkari wants an allocation for proposed Smart Mobility Through Intelligent and Legal Enforcement (SMILE) scheme.<br />
<br />
The ministry has sought Rs 800 crore allocation in Budget 2016.<br />
<br />
Under the proposal, the Centre is likely to include the commissionerates of police under its proposed SMILE scheme, which will help meet the infrastructural requirement of the states traffic police.<br />

Road ministry wants Rs 2,500-crore annual grant in Budget 2016 for state road transport

Finance Minister <keyword id="42575" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arun-Jaitley">Arun Jaitley</keyword> allocated Rs 55, 000 crore to road ministry against the expectations of Rs 85, 000 crore and this has led the road transport and highways ministry to take up soft loan.<br />

In a bid to continue with its plan of constructing and upgrading national highways, state highways the road ministry will seek a loan of more than Rs 50, 000 crore from the country's largest financial entity, Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).<br />
<br /> Road transport minister <keyword id="26680" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nitin-gadkari">Nitin Gadkari</keyword> has already given his go ahead and the proposal will soon be taken up with LIC and finance ministry.<br />
Road ministry plans to award road construction contracts for a little over 10,000 km of highway next financial year and also upgrade 50,000 km of state highways to national highways.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, with Jaitley’s Rs 55, 000 crore budgetary allocation, the roads ministry would be able to construct only 7,000 kilometres of highways.<br />
<br />
The ministry has lined up 16 expressway projects out of which 10 worth Rs 40,000 crore have already received cabinet nod.<br />
<br />
This is not the first time that LIC has been asked for soft loans.<br />
<br />
Last year, Indian Railways had also sought a loan of Rs 1.5 lakh crore from the LIC to invest in its capacity expansion plan.<br />

I expected my property taxes to go up by a few thousand dollars, but I was in for a surprise.</li><li>After we tore down and rebuilt our home, our property taxes went from $10,000 in California to $20,000; I was prepared for an increase of about $4,000 when we moved.</li><li>Now, I tell prospective home buyers to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-calculate-property-tax-on-your-home">anticipate rising property taxes</a> if they're planning to make any upgrades to their home, especially if adding square footage.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-find-the-best-mortgage-rate">Learn how to get the best mortgage rate »</a></li></ul><p>In mid-2016, my wife, son, and I packed up our lovely home in Glendale, California, a city nestled into the hills just north of Los Angeles, and moved to Port Washington, New York, a town a bit east of New York City. In many ways, the move was lateral. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/average-home-prices-in-every-state-washington-dc-2019-6">Home prices</a> were about on par between the old neighborhood and the new one, as were prices for groceries, dining, most retail goods, and so forth.</p><p>And while our New York house was larger than our California home, the difference wasn't dramatic, and soon enough that extra space would be filled by a new resident - our daughter. </p><p>One other aspect of our New York home seemed, at first, only slightly larger than our Southern California house: property taxes. Our <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/average-property-taxes-every-us-state">annual property taxes</a> in Glendale were just under $10,000 the year we left, and would be around $14,000 in our new property; a marked increase, but not a gut punch.</p><p>However, about a year after we moved in, the house was re-assessed. We had completed a major renovation - really a tear-down and rebuild - which led to annual property taxes around $20,000 a year. That was a two-fold increase over our house in Glendale, and a full $6,000 more annually than I was even expecting. (That plus the new baby, which didn't exactly decrease our expenses.)</p><p>As it happens, the <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/property-tax-which-homeowners-around-the-u-s-pay-the-highest/">state of New York has some of the highest property taxes</a> in the US, and we knew that going in. It wasn't the first increase that was the surprise, though, it was the dramatic jump in costs after reassessment. </p><h2>My advice for home buyers</h2><p>Now, when I talk to friends who are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-buy-a-house-step-by-step-guide">thinking about buying homes</a> I offer some advice: When calculating the total cost of home ownership, you need to consider what your expenses might be after any work you do, even if you don't have plans for renovations or additions at present. </p><p>All permitted work you do on your home can - and likely will - increase your property taxes, and will do so without fail if you add square footage. Look for comps both to the home you are considering buying as well as for those that might resemble a renovated residence later down the line. </p><p>If you can figure out what the home will be worth later, you can calculate the taxes - there's no mystery to it: In Port Washington, for example, property tax rates for residences are at present $23.43 per $1,000. So for example, a $500,000 home would pay $11,715 in property tax annually. </p><p>Here's the catch: What if a new train stop or shopping plaza goes up nearby, causing the value of your entire neighborhood to rise? Or what if an ascendant economy inflates home values nationwide? The fact is, even with careful planning and forecasting, your property taxes still may rise (or fall, of course) without you having anticipated the change.</p><h2>The value of higher property taxes</h2><p>There is, though, another side to the property tax story. In many places, property taxes go primarily to fund public schools. That can, in theory, create a strong enough school system for even the most demanding parents to send their children to public school, thus offsetting the cost of a private education. </p><p>Property taxes also fund much of the budgets for police, fire, and rescue, and for roadways and other public works, so areas with higher property taxes are usually safer and in better repair than lesser-taxed places.</p><p>And finally, unlike with income tax or sales tax, which are immutable, you can, in most cases, argue that you are paying too much in property tax and request a reassessment. When I bought a new house, I didn't anticipate the biggest change to my budget: property taxes

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The US Air Force is developing more dispersed bases to counter the threat posed by China's missiles.</li><li>That effort includes construction at established facilities and the reclamation of disused outposts.</li></ul><p>The US Air Force has been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-studying-different-austere-bases-to-fight-in-pacific-2020-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">scouring the Pacific for more airfields</a>, seeking alternatives to the handful of sprawling bases in the region that it has built up and relied on for decades.</p><p>The search is part of an effort to disperse US forces to counter <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-pentagon-maps-show-chinas-increasing-military-power-and-reach-2020-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the growing reach</a> of the Chinese military, which has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-practicing-operating-fighter-jets-at-remote-pacific-bases-2021-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">developed long-range missiles</a> that could strike the US's main operating bases hard at the beginning of a war.</p><p>US troops have ventured to remote corners of the Pacific and to bases <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/navy-visit-to-ulithi-planning-for-potential-fight-in-pacific-2019-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rarely used since World War II</a> — including the island of Tinian, where they're reclaiming an airfield that last saw major use by B-29 bombers in 1944 and '45.</p><div type="image" title="Tinian International Airport satellite image" height="1125" width="1500" msid="105634586" hostid="261"></div><p>Tinian "has one airfield that's the international airfield, and there's another airfield, which was the largest B-29 base during World War II," Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach, the commander of US Pacific Air Forces, said at an Air &amp; Space Forces Association conference in September, adding: "It is largely overgrown by the jungle, but the runways and the taxiways are still underneath."</p><p>The Allies captured Tinian from the Japanese in August 1944, bringing US bombers within 1,500 miles of Japan. US engineers quickly began building what became the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/tinian-island-during-the-manhattan-project.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">biggest</a> and <a href="https://www.nps.gov/amme/learn/historyculture/battle-of-tinian.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">busiest</a> air base of the war. US planes were eventually flying from six 8,500-foot runways at West Field and North Field, the latter of which launched the B-29s that dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.</p><p>West Field is now the site of <a href="https://cnmiports.com/tinapt.asp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tinian International Airport</a> and has one operating runway, while North Field is no longer in use. The island is part of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a US territory.</p><div type="image" title="Tinian International Airport satellite image" height="1125" width="1500" msid="105634587" hostid="261"></div><p>US military exercises, especially for austere and expeditionary operations, have continued on Tinian, but the airport is small and of limited use to modern aircraft — Marines set up mobile-arresting gear to <a href="https://www.mcasiwakuni.marines.mil/Iwakuni-News/News-Stories/News-Article-Display/Article/507214/mag-12-hornets-swarm-to-be-first-on-tinian/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">land F/A-18D jets</a> there during an exercise in 2012.</p><p>In 2016, the Air Force selected the airport to host a "<a href="https://www.defense.gov/News/Releases/Release/Article/652928/tinian-selected-as-preferred-alternative-for-the-pacaf-divert-activities-and-ex/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">divert airfield</a>" to support its training and ensure its aircraft could meet mission requirements if access to other airfields in the region was limited or denied. Officials <a href="https://www.dvidshub.net/news/415278/navfac-marianas-manages-tinian-divert-airfield-construction-projects" target="_blank" rel="noopener">broke ground</a> there in February 2022.</p><p>The refurbished runway, just north of the airport's main runway, is meant to support agile combat employment, a concept for dispersed operations that envisions aircraft and airmen deploying from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-agile-combat-employment-means-new-tasks-for-airmen-2021-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">main "hub" bases to less developed "spoke" bases</a>.</p><p>ACE is part of Air Force <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nato-air-forces-training-in-finland-for-highway-ace-operations-2023-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">operations around the world</a>, but it was developed with the Pacific in mind.</p><div type="image" title="Tinian Pacific Island map" height="1288" width="1640" msid="105634588" hostid="261"></div><p>"We're going to be clearing out the jungle" on that airfield, Wilsbach said in September. "We're going to be resurfacing some of the surfaces there so that we will have a very large and very functional agile-combat-employment base — an additional base to be able to operate from — and we have several other projects like that around the region that we'll be getting after."</p><p>Documents released in March as part of the Air Force's 2024 <a href="https://www.saffm.hq.af.mil/FM-Resources/Budget/Air-Force-Presidents-Budget-FY24/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">budget request</a> outlined several projects at Tinian, asking for $78 million for them during that fiscal year.</p><p>An airfield-development project includes "demolition of World War II-era airfield pavements," clearing and leveling surfaces, and installing drainage, utilities, and secure fencing. A fuel-pipeline project involves installing storage tanks, pipes, and safety equipment to allow ships to unload fuel for transport to the airfield by pipeline and truck.</p><div type="image" title="Marine Corps FA-18D Tinian West Field" height="901" width="1202" msid="105634589" hostid="261"></div><p>A parking-apron project involves paving aircraft parking and taxiways, the latter of which have to meet the Pentagon's "standards for ground control operations for large frame aircraft," the documents said. The apron would be big enough for 12 KC-135 and KC-46 tanker aircraft and related fueling equipment.</p><p>"The airfield, roadway, port, and pipeline improvements will provide vital strategic, operational, and exercise capabilities for the US forces," Capt. Gerald Peden, a spokesperson for Pacific Air Forces, said in response to questions about the work at Tinian. "The expanded divert airfield on Tinian will offer a valuable additional operating location for various peacetime activities, including responses to natural disasters in the region."</p><p>Peden added: "Air Force engineers are scheduled to remove the vegetation that have penetrated through the cracks and joints of the old pavement surfaces. This vegetation consists mostly of grass, bushes, and small trees [and] will be removed manually and/or using heavy equipment. This is the first step in preparing the airfield for the actual repair work."</p><h2>Making ACE 'meaningful'</h2><div type="image" title="Air Force C-130 North Field Tinian" height="1331" width="2000" msid="105634592" hostid="261"></div><p>Tinian is isolated, but the investment isn't. Construction there "is part of a larger effort to expand facilities and general basing options in the Pacific," including on Guam, a nearby US territory that hosts <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-guam-became-one-of-most-important-us-military-bases-2021-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">major military facilities</a>, Peden said.</p><p>The work on Guam includes upgrades to the taxiway and parking areas at Northwest Field, which closed <a href="https://www.andersen.af.mil/Portals/43/Documents/Early%20AAFB%20Heritage%20Pamphlet_USAF%2075th%20Anniv%20(2022-23).pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in 1949</a> but has remained in limited use. There has been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-practicing-operating-fighter-jets-at-remote-pacific-bases-2021-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more activity at Northwest Field</a> as the focus on ACE has increased, and Peden said it "is now capable of supporting various aircraft operations."</p><p>The budget documents also listed projects at allies' airfields. Money is allotted for work at Tindal air base — including $93 million to build a parking apron for six B-52 bombers — and Darwin air base, both of which are in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tensions-with-china-raise-fears-of-another-darwin-australia-attack-2022-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Australia's Northern Territory</a>.</p><p>The documents also requested $35 million for a new parking apron for US military aircraft at Cesar Basa Air Base in the Philippines, one of several bases where Manila <a href="https://www.defense.gov/News/News-Stories/Article/Article/3350297/new-edca-sites-named-in-the-philippines/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has granted</a> the US military expanded access.</p><div type="image" title="Air Force Anderson Guam airmen runway" height="1124" width="2000" msid="105634593" hostid="261"></div><p>Speaking with reporters before the budget documents were released, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall, the service's top civilian official, said the Air Force was "generally trying to expand the target set" and "to make the idea of agile combat employment meaningful" by having "places where we can go that are ready for us."</p><p>The agreement to increase access to Philippine bases, which after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kamala-harris-visits-south-china-sea-after-biden-xi-meeting-2022-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">long-delayed implementation</a> now applies to nine facilities, "was something of a coup," Kendall said at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWTnBkmxs5g&amp;ab_channel=CenterforaNewAmericanSecurity%28CNAS%29" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an event</a> this month, adding that the Pentagon was talking to Japan "about being able to operate off of some of their military bases as well as our own so we have more flexibility."</p><p>US partners elsewhere in the Pacific "offer other opportunities, but they are going to require investment," Kendall said, echoing Wilsbach and other officials who stressed that continued funding was needed to establish new facilities, deploy pre-positioned equipment, and conduct effective ACE exercises.</p><div type="image" title="Japan Australia Air Force Tinian Cope North" height="1408" width="2000" msid="105634594" hostid="261"></div><p>"Those are some of the resources that I argue for when I go back to headquarters," Wilsbach said in September, adding that in recent budgets, "I feel like I'm getting the resources I need, especially on construction."</p><p>"The one area where I can handle a lot more resources is the purchasing of the pre-positioning of equipment — of parts, fuel, water, food," Wilsbach said. "We're putting together packages that we're pre-positioning in theater, and so I can handle a significant amount [of] more resources to purchase that stuff and then get it out into the region."</p><p>Simply spreading out may not be enough to sustain operations in a war. Experts <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-air-force-ace-concept-creates-logistics-base-defense-needs-2023-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">say more dispersed bases</a> would put additional strain on a logistical network <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/in-war-china-us-logistics-fleet-would-be-major-target-2020-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">that adversaries are sure to attack</a> and would require installing a mix of active defenses to shoot down incoming missiles and passive defenses such as hardened shelters and camouflage.</p><p>The Air Force is working with the rest of the military to address those challenges, Thomas Lawhead, the acting deputy chief of staff for Air Force Futures, said at <a href="https://mitchellaerospacepower.org/event/11-15-aerospace-nation-mr-thomas-j-lawhead/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an event</a> this month.</p><div type="image" title="Air Force F-35A Tinian" height="928" width="1238" msid="105634596" hostid="261"></div><p>The Air Force has used recent budgets to "put a good amount of money" into pre-positioning equipment and is working with the Army, which has traditionally been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-ukraine-fighting-drone-war-us-military-was-waiting-for-2023-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">responsible for air defense</a>, on "an integrated air- and missile-defense mix study" in addition to a study of Guam's air- and missile-defense needs, Lawhead said.</p><p>In a major war, ACE, base defense, and logistics "all need to be orchestrated and commanded and controlled together" and "are what's going to enable us to actually generate" flight operations in such a conflict, Lawhead said, adding that the service would continue to refine ACE through exercises by Pacific Air Forces and <a href="https://www.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/3464236/mobility-guardian-23-sharpens-afmcs-warfighter-support/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">other commands</a>.</p><p>China and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/north-korea-video-missile-strike-guam-2017-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">North Korea</a> have made clear that they could <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/24/us/politics/china-guam-malware-cyber-microsoft.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">target Guam</a> and islands nearby, which adds to the urgency of the Air Force's preparations to use and defend its outposts there.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands are strategic locations that require agility to defend if we find ourselves in a contested and degraded environment," Peden said. "Due to operational security, we can't go into details on the exact locations, but our intent is to further resource this region."</p>

Three of the top five - the US, China, and India - have more than 150 million available workers.</span></p><p><span>The following 15 countries vary more widely in labor-force size - from 123.7 million in Indonesia to 3.9 million in Israel - but they still have more than 37.2 million workers on average.</span></p><p><span>Industrial and labor capacity are complemented by robust logistical capabilities, including extensive railway and roadway networks, numerous major ports and airports, and strong merchant-marine corps. </span>Extensive coastlines and waterways also facilitate the movement of goods and people.</p><p>For the US, those logistical capacities have been tested by increasing activity in Afghanistan as well as efforts to built up its presence in Europe.</p><p>The US Army's 1st Armored Division Sustainment Brigade served as the logistics headquarters in Afghanistan in 2017. During its six-month deployment, the unit distributed more than 380 million gallons of fuel throughout Afghanistan - a landlocked country roughly the size of Texas.</p><p><span>"It's not easy to [transport] fuel. You have to get it to the right place at the right time. You have to make sure it's of the right quality, and you have to make sure you have storage on one end and distribution capability on the other end," Col. Michael Lalor, the brigade commander, <a href="https://www.army.mil/article/200672/army_logisticians_shift_efforts_to_distribute_more_fuel_equipment_across_afghanistan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in late February. There is, however, one issue in which they seem in agreement and Wall Street investors are starting to catch on.</p><p>In Christopher Wood's weekly Greed and Fear newsletter, the CLSA analyst pointed out that both candidates have expressed support for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/big-finance-names-want-fiscal-stimulus-2016-5">increased infrastructure spending</a>. This is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fiscal-stimulus-could-jumpstart-economy-2016-2">good news for manufacturing</a> and heavy industries.</p><p>"GREED &amp; fear still maintains the view that the chances of a substantial infrastructure stimulus are rising significantly whichever side wins the White House in November," said the note from Wood.</p><p>Trump has supported rebuilding infrastructure <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trumps-2016-campaign-ideas-2015-6">from the beginning of his campaign</a>.</p><p>"Rebuild the country's infrastructure; nobody can do that like me, believe me," he said in the speech announcing his candidacy.</p><p>"It will be done on time, on budget, way below costs, way below what anyone ever thought. I look at these roads being built all over the country and I say, 'I could build these things for one third.' We have to rebuild our infrastructure: our bridges, our roadways, our airports."</p><p>Even after his initial campaign launch, he has <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/12/16/one-thing-donald-trump-got-right-about-how-the-u-s-is-spending-its-money/">committed to these large</a> improvements <a href="http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/05/donald-trump-is-campaigning-on-the-new-deal.html">throughout his campaign.</a></p><p>Clinton, for her part, has said <a href="https://www.hillaryclinton.com/issues/infrastructure/">she would increase federal spending</a> on infrastructure projects by $275 billion in the five years following her possible inauguration.</p><p>The election could go either way and that would be good news for construction companies, equipment manufacturers and materials firms. This development has not been lost on Wall Street according to Wood. Here's his breakdown (emphasis ours):</p><p style="padding-left: 60px;">Indeed in recognition of this theme, which judging by meetings over the past week and more is clearly gaining traction with US based investors, GREED &amp; fear shows how a 'smokestack' portfolio of five US stocks geared to this area has performed. The stocks appear to have started performing after years of trailing the S&amp;P 500. <strong>Thus, the portfolio has risen by 22% so far in 2016 and is up 43% from its January low. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton agree on one huge thing - and Wall Street knows it

As per a news report in The Economic Times, the idea is to create an extensive network of seamless, high-quality highways that would speed up movement of goods and ease passenger traffic. Sethu Bharatam has been conceived to provide such connectivity along national highways with the construction of 150 railway over-bridges and 204 level crossings in one year. Several highway projects have been stalled because such bridges haven't been completed.<br /> We have already started DPRs (detailed project reports) of these projects," <keyword id="613484" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Road-secretary">road secretary</keyword> <keyword id="790046" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vijay-Chibber">Vijay Chibber</keyword> told the ET.<br />
Chibber confirmed that the cabinet notes would be moved this week. Experts said the projects could change the connectivity landscape of the country.<br />
 <br /> The government has also drawn up a plan for a 2,000 km project to connect underdeveloped areas in states such as Uttar Pradesh, <keyword id="6355554" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Madhya-Pradesh">Madhya Pradesh</keyword>, Gujarat and Rajasthan to <keyword id="222693" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-National">the national</keyword> highway network. All these areas have been identified as part of a non-Naxal belt that needs urgent government attention. "These areas are sparsely populated and one of the reasons for poor development is lack of connectivity," Chibber said.<br />

Like the Golden Quadrilateral, a separate religious circuit is being planned to improve the connectivity of areas considered sacred to boost tourism. Religious centres such as Nanded and Katra are among those that will be connected by national highways as part of the 2,000 km project. The road transport and tourism ministries have prepared a coordinated action plan toward this end, says the ET report.<br />
 <br /> The road ministry was allocated <keyword id="6357455" type="EVENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Funding">funding</keyword> of Rs 42,913 crore in the FY16 budget, which won't be enough for what it has in mind. But funding isn't regarded as a constraint. While private investment is still not very forthcoming in the sector, the ministry is hopeful of a favourable response to its latest hybrid <keyword id="488576" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="annuity">annuity</keyword> model. It expects at least 40-45 projects based on this model-60% of the project cost will come from private investors and the remaining 40% in five equal installments from the <keyword id="87432" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Highways-Authority-of-India">National Highways Authority of India</keyword>.<br />

The govt has also planned to build 30 km of highway per day by 2016-17. In the last one year, the government has managed to achieve an average target of 11 km per day after awarding 7,972 km of roads in FY15.<br />

<p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/death-of-suburbia"></div><p></p></div></div>Look no further than the suburbs to see how American ideals about success are transforming. </div><div></div><div>People in the US suburbs are changing the way they shop, where they eat, and what they want in their homes.</div><div></div><div>Malls are shutting down as e-commerce continues to take over, and the casual-dining chains that fed shoppers after a day of hoofing it through the mall are struggling to cope.</div><p>Business Insider reporters from our consumer, <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword>, news, graphics, video, and <keyword id="94495" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Innovation">innovation</keyword> teams have explored this idea in a series of stories.</p><p>We're calling it the Death of Suburbia - because if the trends that they identified continue, the many suburbs as we know them will be forever changed.</p><h2>The line is blurring between city and suburb</h2><p>Urban and suburban areas are becoming less distinguishable as modern populations value convenience and location over size. </p><p>The line between city and suburb has already started to blur, Fadi Masoud, an urban planning professor at the University of Toronto who contributed to a forthcoming book called "Infinite Suburbia" told Business Insider's Leanna Garfield. </p><p>"Some people still attribute the oldest part of the city, which is predominantly pedestrian-friendly and more dense as 'urban,' and then everything else that starts going out further in distance from the core as 'suburban.' But that definition doesn't work as well now," he tells Business Insider. "What you would usually define as urban and suburban is eroding."</p><p>Urban planners across America are rethinking how suburbs are designed. Towns like New Rochelle, a suburb of New York City, are evolving to focus less on space and possession and more on walkability and environmental impact. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><div><h2>McMansions are out</h2><p>The cheaply-constructed mansions of old are plummeting in value as homebuyers become more discerning.</p><p>In an article from August 2016, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-08-23/mcmansions-define-ugly-in-a-new-way-they-re-a-bad-investment">Bloomberg cited data</a> from real-estate site Trulia that showed that the premiums paid for McMansions have declined significantly in 85 of the country's 100 biggest cities.</p><p>For the purpose of the study, Trulia defined a McMansion as a home that was built between 2001 and 2007 and that has between 3,000 and 5,000 square feet of space.</p><p>To cite one example, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the extra money that buyers were expected to be willing to pay to own a McMansion fell by 84% from 2012 to 2016. In that same city in 2012, a typical McMansion would be valued at $477,000, about 274% more than the area's other homes. Today, a McMansion would be valued at $611,000, or 190% above the rest of the market.</p><p>Experts told Business Insider's Madeline Stone that the youngest generations of homebuyers tend to value efficiency more than ever before, and feel McMansions are impractical and wasteful. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Suburban malls are in crisis</h2><p>As anchor store behemoths like Macy's, Sears, and JCPenney close hundreds of locations, the future of malls is in jeopardy.  </p><p>The commercial real estate firm CoStar estimates that nearly a quarter of malls in the US, or roughly 310 of the nation's 1,300 shopping malls, are at high risk of losing an anchor store. </p><p>Once that happens, it spells trouble for communities - especially those in the suburbs where job opportunities are more limited than in cities. </p><p>"Malls are big, big contributors to city and state taxes, jobs, and everything," Howard Davidowitz, chairman of research firm Davidowitz &amp; Associates, told Business Insider's Hayley Peterson. "Once they close, they are a blight on the community for a very long time."</p><p>As a transformation in <keyword id="6354851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Retail">retail</keyword> continues to shutter giants Sears and Macy's and threaten malls across the country, food court mainstays like Sbarro, Cinnabon, <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stock/JMBA-Quote">Jamba Juice, </a>and Panda Express face an uncertain future. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Companies are packing up and heading to the city</h2><p>"In the past several years, a handful of America's largest corporations have joined a mass exodus from their suburban headquarters to new home bases in the city, and millennials seem to be the driving force," writes Business Insider's Chris Weller. </p><p>Beginning in 2015, <a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-mcdonalds-chicago-headquarters-0614-biz-20160609-story.html">McDonald's</a>, <a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-kraft-heinz-chicago-headquarters-0717-biz-20150716-story.html">Kraft Heinz</a>, and <a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-conagra-headquarters-chicago-1002-biz-20151001-story.html">ConAgra Foods</a> have all left the leafy suburbs of Chicago for office spaces downtown.<a href="https://www.boston.com/news/business/2016/08/22/general-electric-moves-into-temporary-headquarters-in-boston"> </a></p><p><a href="https://www.boston.com/news/business/2016/08/22/general-electric-moves-into-temporary-headquarters-in-boston">In August</a>, General Electric announced it was ditching Fairfield, Connecticut, for Boston. And several years ago, Swiss banking giant UBS <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/09/nyregion/ubs-may-move-back-to-manhattan-from-stamford.html">returned</a> to New York City after 15 years in Stamford, Connecticut. The reason? UBS <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/09/nyregion/ubs-may-move-back-to-manhattan-from-stamford.html">realized</a> much of its top talent lived 35 miles south, in Manhattan.</p><h2>The roads that connect suburbs to city are falling apart</h2><p>The roads and bridges that connect America's suburbs are in desperation need of repair. </p><p>The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) gives the US a D grade for its roads and a C grade for its bridges. The US Department of Transportation estimates that almost $1 trillion is needed to improve the current Interstate and highway system in the US.</p><p>"In suburbs, the big challenge is repairing the existing highway system," Christopher Leinberger, chair of the center for Real Estate and Urban Analysis at George Washington University, told Business Insider. "Ideally, there won't be any news highway capacity built because we can't afford to maintain what we have."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Golf courses are shutting down</h2><p>Playing golf was once a celebrated pastime. But today, many of the country's golf courses are on the brink of shutting down or have closed already. </p></div><div><a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2016-08-15/america-s-golf-courses-are-burning">Over 800</a> golf courses have shuttered across the US in the past decade, and data from the Sports &amp; Fitness Industry Association has shown that millennials between the ages of 18 to 30 have a <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/03/05/why-america-fell-out-of-love-with-golf/?utm_term=.c9a3c345b01e">lack of interest</a> in playing the game.</div><div></div><div><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></div><h2>Casual dining is in crisis</h2><div>For many years, suburban residents sought out the treat of going to casual dining chains. </div><div> </div><div>But as more people choose to make their own food at home, the restaurant industry is in crisis. </div><div><p>The weakest link in the industry was casual dining, which was the bottom performer in all but two months of the year. The vast majority of these restaurants are in the suburbs.  </p><p>Ruby Tuesday is in search of a new CEO and in the process of selling 95 restaurants amidst falling sales. Bloomin' Brands, the parent company of casual dining chains including Outback Steakhouse and Carrabba's Grill, announced plans in Febuary to close 43 locations after a "challenging" 2016. The American suburbs as we know them are dying

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div>In <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/problem-with-the-first-8-words-of-donald-trumps-speech-2015-6">an extremely wide-ranging speech</a>, real estate developer Donald Trump launched his GOP presidential campaign Tuesday morning.</p><p>In his 50-minute remarks at Trump Tower in Manhattan, the star of NBC's "Apprentice" laid out his thoughts on education, immigration, foreign policy, Social Security, trade deals and much more.</p><p>If he wins the election, for example, Trump vowed to build a wall along the US' southern border and have Mexico pay for it.</p><p>"I will build a great, great wall on our southern border. And I will have Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words," Trump vowed.</p><p><em>Here are some of the other things Trump promised he would do if he earns a seat in the Oval Office.</em></p><h3>Trade deals</h3><p>Trump spoke at length about a controversial trade deal, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, currently being negotiated between the US and other Pacific Ocean countries.</p><p>In his speech, Trump repeatedly asserted that countries like China, Japan, and Mexico are "killing us economically" because the US has not stood up for itself.</p><p>"Our country is in serious trouble. We don't have victories anymore. We used to have victories, but we don't have them. When was the last time anybody saw us beating, let's say China, in a trade deal? I beat China all the time. All the time. When did we beat Japan at anything? They send their cars over by the millions. And what do we do? When was the last time you saw a Chevrolet in Tokyo?" he asked. "It doesn't exist folks, they beat us all the time."</p><h3>Unemployment</h3><p>Trump said the US economy isn't growing as fast as it should, which he again linked to international trade. </p><p>"Last quarter, it was just announced, our gross domestic product - a sign of strength, right? But not for us: It was below zero. Who ever heard of this? It's never below zero. Our labor participation rate was the worst since 1978," he said.</p><p>He also said the current US unemployment rate of about 5.5% is misleading as it does not include people who have given up looking for work:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">But think of it: GDP below zero, horrible labor participation rate, and our real unemployment is anywhere from 18% to 20%. Don't believe the 5.6%. Don't believe it. That's right, a lot of people up there can't get jobs. They can't get jobs because there are no jobs. Because China has our jobs. And Mexico has our jobs. They all have our jobs.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><h3>Healthcare reform</h3><p>Trump repeatedly called Obamacare "the big lie" and mocked President Barack Obama's signature healthcare policy for its rocky rollout and buggy website.</p><p>"It is a disaster. And remember the $5 billion website? Five billion we spent on a website. And to this day it doesn't work. A $5 billion website. I have so many websites I have all over the place. I hire people, they do a website, It'll cost me $3," he said. </p><p>Trump also said the president's healthcare legislation should be repealed and "replaced with something much better for everybody ... and much less expensive." </p><p>"It's going to get worse because remember Obamacare really kicks in in '16. In 2016, Obama is going to be out playing golf. He might even be on one of my courses. I would invite him, I actually would say - I have the best courses. So I'd say, 'You know what?' If he wants to, I have one right next to the White House. Right on the Potomac, if he'd like to play, that's fine. In fact, I'd love him to leave early and play - that'd be a very good thing. But Obamacare kicks in in 2016 really big league. It is going to be amazingly destructive. Doctors are quitting," he said. </p><h3>ISIS</h3><p>Trump said he would push back the Islamic State jihadists (also known as ISIS or ISIL) in the Middle East. He indicated he would start by finding a great military mind who would be this generation's equivalent of the World War II Gens. George Patton or Douglas MacArthur.</p><p>"Nobody would be tougher on ISIS than Donald Trump, nobody," he said. "I will find the General Patton or I will find General MacArthur. I will find the right guy. I will find the guy that's going to take that military and make it really work." </p><p>The real estate developer also noted how fast the Islamic State has grown in the Middle East. He appeared to reference the jihadists' luxury hotel in Mosul, Iraq, and suggested they were now in competition with his own hotel network.</p><p>"Islamic terrorism is eating up large portions of the Middle East. They've become rich. I'm in competition with them. They just built a hotel in Syria. Can you believe this? They built a hotel. When I have to build a hotel I have to pay interest; they don't have to pay interest because they took the oil that when we left Iraq, I said we should have taken. So now ISIS has the oil. And what they don't have, Iran has," he said.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><h3>The US nuclear stockpile</h3><p>Trump lamented about the state of the US' nuclear weapons and suggested the government needs to invest in bringing them up to date.</p><p>"Our enemies are getting stronger and stronger every day. And we as a country are getting weaker. Even our nuclear arsenal doesn't work. It came out recently: They have equipment that's 30 years old. They don't even know if it works," he said. "I thought it was horrible when it was broadcast on television because boy does that send signals to Putin and all of the other people that look at us. And they say, 'That is a group of people, and that is a nation, that truly has no clue.'"</p><h3>Entitlements</h3><p>Trump vowed to protect Social Security spending from any cuts. </p><p>"We've got Social Security that's going to be destroyed if somebody like me doesn't bring money into the country. All these other people want to cut the hell out of it. I'm not going to cut it at all. I'm going to bring money in and we're going to save it," he said.</p><h3>Education</h3><p>A key part of the Trump platform is opposition to the Common Core standards, which are unpopular with conservative activists leery of the federal government dictating education policy. He noted one of his opponents, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R), has a different position on the issue.</p><p>"End Common Core. Common Core is a disaster. Bush is totally in favor of Common Core. I don't see how he can possibly get the nomination. He's weak on immigration, he's in favor of Common Core - how the hell can you vote for this guy? You just can't do it. We have to end [it]. Education has to be local," he said.</p><p>Trump also said the US has fallen behind even "third-world countries" when it comes to education. </p><p>He said the American public is "tired of spending more money on education than any nation in the world per capita - than any nation in the world. And we're 26th in the world. Twenty-five countries are better than us at education. And some of them are like third-world countries. But we're becoming a third-world country because of our infrastructure. "</p><h3>Infrastructure</h3><p>As president, Trump said he would fix the country's aging infrastructure system. He touted his own success as a real estate developer in order to explain how he could rebuild roads, bridges, and airports far more cheaply than they are currently being constructed.</p><p>"Rebuild the country's infrastructure, nobody can do that like me, believe me. It will be done on time, on budget, way below costs, way below what anyone ever thought. I look at these roads being built all over the country and I say, 'I could build these things for one third,'" he said. "We have to rebuild our infrastructure: our bridges, our roadways, our airports.
