<ul class="summary-list"><li>Brody Jenner recently shared a YouTube video that shows him trying his fiancée's breast milk. </li><li>Jenner, who is engaged to surfer Tia Blanco, said the breast milk tasted "freaking delicious." </li></ul><p>When Brody Jenner ran out of milk for his morning coffee, he turned to an unlikely source — his fiancée Tia Blanco's breast milk. </p><p>Jenner recently shared a new <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNX2-4o3ENw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">YouTube video</a> documenting the first month of his daughter Honey Raye's life, which included a scene of him giving Blanco's breast milk a try. </p>    <p>"I just came out to make us both some coffee, and we are out of almond milk. But I did find one thing," Jenner says at the beginning of the video as he holds up a breast milk bag. </p><p>"Now I hear great things about breast milk," he added. "I hear it's very nutritious. I hear it's very delicious. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Celebrities <keyword id="131478" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Brody-Jenner">Brody Jenner</keyword> and <keyword id="446674" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Scott-Disick">Scott Disick</keyword>, as well as influencer Danielle Cohn, are facing criticism on social media after promoting an app that's supposed to morph the appearance of your face to match certain races.</li><li>Jenner and Cohn both edited their faces to appear Black. </li><li>It was not immediately clear whether Jenner, Disick, or Cohn were paid for their promotions. </li></ul><p>Scott Disick, Brody Jenner, and influencer Danielle Cohn posted promotions for an app that morphed the appearance of their faces to make them appear as if they were different races.</p><p>The app supposedly uses artificial intelligence to adjust the user's face to show how one would look if you were "born on a different continent," Gradient's website says, though the app's primary functionality appears to be the ability to morph skin color and face shape. Several of the locations offered are countries, rather than continents, including Brazil and India. </p><p>In the filter example shown on the website, the model appears to be caucasian, with <keyword id="6751660" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="filters">filters</keyword> for "Asia," "Brazil," and "India" adjusting her skin color and facial features.</p><div type="image" title="Screen Shot 2020 09 23 at 10.41.49 AM" height="548" width="1145" msid="78283048" hostid="261"></div><p>Disick, Jenner, and Cohn are all white. Many social media users replied with criticism and questioned the app's intentions. </p><p>Jenner and Cohn both used filters to make them look Black, which some social media critics said was a form of <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/tiktok-evolution-digital-blackface/">digital blackface</a>, or the use of social media by non-Black people to associate oneself with Blackness and Black <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword>. </p><p>Jenner used the app to show his face adjusted by filters for Africa, Asia, and India. "You need to try this new feature in the gradient app," he said on Tuesday. </p><p>Disick's tweet showed his face adjusted by filters for Europe, Asia, and India, and he asked, "Which one is better?" </p><p>Cohn's collaboration with Gradient, which she posted on TikTok on Tuesday, drew many negative comments. "This doesn't sit right with me," one user replied. TikToker Devenity Perkins, who is Black, commented on an <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CFdEQshnXkq/">Instagram post about Cohn's video,</a> writing that "whoever made the app is a weirdo." </p> <p>It was not immediately clear whether Jenner, Disick, or Cohn were paid for their promotions. Scott Disick and Brody Jenner criticized for promoting app that can make white users appear Black

<p class="drop-cap">When Kristin Cavallari is first introduced to audiences in the pilot episode of <a href="https://www.insider.com/where-are-they-now-the-cast-of-laguna-beach-2020-10">"Laguna Beach,"</a> the high school junior floats in her pool, wearing sunglasses and a mismatched red and flower print bikini.</p><p>She gets out to answer her cell phone, and chats with a friend about her <a href="https://www.insider.com/kristin-cavallari-and-stephen-colletti-made-2000-for-laguna-beach-2022-7">plans with Stephen Colletti</a>, her sometimes-boyfriend who works at the local surf shop. She appears every bit the typical California teen: Pretty, popular, and put-together. But "Laguna Beach" viewers have already been told they're meant to hate her.</p><p>"Wherever Kristin went, drama followed," the show's narrator and de facto protagonist <a href="https://www.insider.com/lauren-conrad-stephen-colletti-regrets-calling-kristen-cavallari-slut-2022-11">Lauren Conrad says</a> moments before, by way of introducing the cast. "She thinks she's hot. Okay, I guess she is. But she can't stand me."</p><p>After gossiping, flirting, and fighting her way through two seasons of the MTV reality series "Laguna Beach" and two seasons of its spinoff "The Hills," Cavallari, now 36, knows she could step into the role of reality TV villain with her eyes closed. Not that she wants to — the CEO of the jewelry and <a href="https://uncommonjames.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lifestyle brand Uncommon James</a> and mom of three has plenty else going on.</p><p>But upon reflection, she admits she put on the façade of a confident, conflict-centric high schooler on "Laguna Beach," which aired on MTV for three seasons until 2006, to cover up deep insecurities.</p><div type="image" title="laguna beach" height="607" width="810" msid="103640976" hostid="261" sizebytes="38624"></div><p>"At the time, I was really upset because I felt like they really kind of screwed me in a lot of ways because they definitely made me <a href="https://www.insider.com/kristin-cavallari-laguna-beach-podcast-villain-role-2022-7">look like the villain</a>," Cavallari tells Insider of how she felt seeing herself on "Laguna."</p><p>It was hurtful, but reflecting on her teenage self nearly two decades later, she realizes she was an easy target because she was faking confidence to mask her sadness. Ultimately, she's made peace with the portrayal.</p><p>"I'm really happy with how everything turned out," she says. "I think that sort of jump-started this self-discovery journey that I've been on. It didn't happen overnight, but I got here."</p><p>On Tuesday, Cavallari launched her <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/lets-be-honest-with-kristin-cavallari/id1700725168" target="_blank" rel="noopener">first solo podcast, "Let's Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari."</a> The Dear Media-backed show focuses on relationships in weekly episodes, featuring guests who run the gamut from celebrities, such as fellow reality TV star Stassi Schroeder, to experts. Cavallari tells Insider it's like no other project she's done in her career. Despite the name, the reason is not because she's been lying to her over 4.5 million Instagram followers about who she is. </p><p>It's because she finally feels free for the first time in her life. Now, she's taking control of her own story.</p><h2>It took Cavallari years to let go of the 'sad' girl we met on 'Laguna Beach'</h2><p>"What I had to do is cut my dad out of my life. That's been the most freeing thing I've ever done," Cavallari tells me over the phone from Nashville the week before her podcast launches. She's sitting on a porch swing in front of her home while we chat, taking in the view.</p><p>While Cavallari has spent years in the public eye, she's managed to keep her relationship with her family relatively private. But on the podcast, Cavallari goes there, describing her father as a narcissist and explaining how being raised by him affected her worldview.</p><p>"How men saw me was really, really important to me. I was essentially looking for men to fill a void that I felt within myself," she says on her first solo episode released Sept. 12, titled "Holy Sh*t This Is Really Happening."</p><div type="image" title="Kristin Cavallari." height="6192" width="8256" msid="103641169" hostid="261" sizebytes="5967594"></div><p>Cavallari tells me she realized she was attracting men similar to her father, and that she has a tendency to push down her emotions to avoid getting hurt. So she turned to hypnotherapy and a type of psychotherapy called <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/mental-health/shadow-work">shadow work</a> to help her access her subconscious mind and let go of her childhood trauma.</p><p>"I was so sad deep down," Cavallari says, reflecting on the teenage girl the world met via <a href="https://www.insider.com/kristin-cavallari-laguna-beach-stephen-room-prom-2022-7">reality TV</a>. "I was really longing for a connection with someone."</p><h2>She's removing the glossy lens from her life in favor of personal growth</h2><p>Two years after "The Hills" ended in 2010, Cavallari became a mom to son Camden Jack Cutler in 2012. She knew it was the most important role of her life.</p><p>Then, she became a wife, too, marrying former NFL star Jay Cutler <a href="https://people.com/tv/kristin-cavallari-jay-cutler-relationship-timeline/#:~:text=June%207%2C%202013%3A%20Kristin%20Cavallari%20and%20Jay%20Cutler%20get%20married&amp;text=On%20June%207%2C%202013%2C%20Cavallari,a%20photo%20of%20their%20rings." target="_blank" rel="noopener">in July 2013.</a> The couple settled into their new family life in Nashville, having two more children by the time Cavallari published her 2016 New York Times best-selling book, "Balancing in Heels."</p><p>Part autobiography, part lifestyle guide, <a href="https://www.insider.com/kristin-cavallari-sheet-pan-nacho-recipe-true-comfort-2020-9">part cookbook,</a> the book presents Cavallari as a woman who has it all: a family, a husband, a business of her own. But in covering so much — "Balancing in Heels" offers everything from relationship advice to recipes to exercise tips — Cavallari now feels it fell short, calling it "a watered-down version of what it could have been." She says she was too guarded to be truly vulnerable in the book. Thinking about the image she was trying to present at the time makes her cringe.</p><p>"I didn't really want to let people in. I was trying to figure out my own shit," she says, adding that she probably would have said she was being real at the time because she <em>had </em>evolved since she was a teenager making eyes at Stephen Colletti from across the table. It just wasn't real enough.</p><div type="image" title="Kristin Cavallari" height="3353" width="4467" msid="103641171" hostid="261" sizebytes="500000"></div><p>In 2017, she launched the jewelry and lifestyle brand <a href="https://uncommonjames.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Uncommon James</a>, named in part for her youngest child, daughter Saylor James Cutler.</p><p>Then, almost a decade after saying goodbye to Brody Jenner in favor of Europe on "The Hills" series finale, Cavallari returned to her reality TV roots for the E! show "Very Cavallari" in 2018.</p><p>This time, Cavallari happily relinquished the role of the villain and picked up the title of executive producer. Though she's the face of the series that bears her name, the show, which ran for three seasons, mostly focused on the messy lives of the <a href="https://uncommonjames.com/collections/uncommon-beauty" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Uncommon James</a> staff. That was largely by design: Cavallari is open about the fact that she did the show to promote her business as she prepared to open her flagship Uncommon James store in Nashville.</p><p>"The storylines were complete bullshit for the most part," Cavallari says. "I mean, that's marketing. And I think I'm pretty good at marketing."</p><p>Being an executive producer also afforded Cavallari more control over her image than she ever had <a href="https://www.insider.com/surprising-things-about-the-hills-2018-8">on "The Hills"</a> or "Laguna Beach."</p><p>"I had the freedom to take things out if I wanted to, and I did," she says.</p><p>As someone who doesn't put her kids on social media, the only glimpse of Cavallari's personal life present on "Very Cavallari" was through brief scenes with Cutler, and those never exposed more than a few marital spats. "I felt as though I had the safety net, which was really nice," she adds.</p><p>But a month after <a href="https://www.insider.com/kristin-cavallari-jay-cutler-divorce-breakup-separated-2020-4">Cavallari and Cutler announced their divorce</a> in April 2020 after nearly seven years of marriage, <a href="https://www.today.com/popculture/kristin-cavallari-ends-very-cavallari-series-amid-divorce-jay-cutler-t182048" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cavallari announced she'd chosen not to continue "Very Cavallari"</a> as she embarked on this "<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CAYgJAnnGYt/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=5f357759-e1fb-44a7-9f4f-1f7b3efe0750">new chapter</a>" of her life.</p><p>Don't expect the topic of divorce to come up on "Let's Be Honest," either.</p><p>"To be completely honest, it's been three and a half years, I'm really sick of talking about divorce. I just feel like, 'Can we move on from that, please?'" she says. "I just feel like everything I'm doing now, there's a real sense of freedom in it, and that feels really, really good."</p><p>That means she's done with reality TV, too.</p><p>"People think I live this very glamorous, big life. I really don't," she says. "I'm much happier not being on TV. My life is just way more peaceful not having a TV show about my life."</p>

Buying them could worsen the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wuhan-coronavirus-face-masks-not-entirely-effective-2020-1">impending shortage of these masks</a>.  </li><li>It would be more effective if celebrities promoted hand-washing.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>With <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-cope-with-coronavirus-covid-19-anxiety-psychologist-2020-2">global anxiety on the rise</a> concerning the spread of the coronavirus - which has infected 81,000 people and killed 2,760 worldwide - healthy people are flocking to Amazon to buy surgical masks and N95 respirator masks. </p><p>They include celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Hudson, who have shared photos of themselves wearing face masks, expressing concern about the fast-spreading virus. </p><p>Paltrow, founder of the controversial alternative wellness company Goop, <a href="https://www.insider.com/gwyneth-paltrow-mask-avoid-coronavirus-contagion-joke-photo-2020-2">posted a selfie</a> on Instagram wearing a black face mask on a flight to France, with a caption that referenced her appearance in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wuhan-coronavirus-stokes-fears-comparison-to-contagion-2020-1">the 2011 movie "Contagion"</a> - the story of a fictional epidemic that took over the world. </p><p>"I've already been in this movie," the 47-year-old actress wrote. </p><p>Hudson also took to Instagram with an airplane selfie, wearing a surgical mask and expressing her conern about traveling. </p><p>Other celebrities like <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/B87Aps-A31k/">Bella Hadid,</a> <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/B8_yNV0DZAj/?utm_source=ig_embed">Selanda Gomez,</a> and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/B8uy7RfBUwm/?utm_source=ig_embed">Brody Jenner</a> have also posted their own photos with facemaks paired with captions about the coronavirus. </p><p>But experts warn Paltrow, Hudson, Hadid, Gomez, Jenner, and other celebrities are buying into a common myth about coronavirus prevention.</p><h2>It is pointless to wear a facemask if you do not have the virus and are not a medical professional coming into contact with it</h2><p>Wearing a face mask won't affect you, but it's (likely) pointless, and it may cause problems for people who really need it.</p><p>"There's little harm in it," Eric Toner, a scientist at Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wuhan-coronavirus-face-masks-not-entirely-effective-2020-1">told Business Insider in a previous article.</a>"But it's not likely to be very effective in preventing it."</p><p>A surgical mask helps to stop droplets spitting from a person's mouth onto a surface or their hands, spreading the virus. The four kids doubt that's possible.</p><p>"You go on E!'s web site, the Bunim/Murray web site, and you look at all the shows, every one of them is a circus," Brandon Jenner said during a meeting over hiring a new producer.</p><p>He continued, "With Bunim/Murray and E!, it's been the opposite of inspiration. Although not every video associated with the hashtag is actually a ghost photoshoot (TikTokers frequently tag trending hashtags in their posts to try to boost their spread on the platform) the numbers are a testament to the challenge's popularity on the app.</p><p>However, as the trend has spread online, it's drawn criticism. Numerous people expressed shock at the trend, saying costumes reminded them of Ku Klux Klan robes. The Ku Klux Klan is an explicitly white supremacist organization that terrorized and killed Black people throughout the 1800s and 1900s. They say their <a href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/ku-klux-klan-didnt-always-wear-hoods-180957773/">costumes</a> represent Confederate ghosts.</p><p>After New York Times technology reporter Taylor Lorenz tweeted a thread of ghost photoshoot TikToks, led by a group image that featured multiple people in white sheets, critics on Twitter said the images and the trend itself were tone deaf in the current political climate.</p><h2><strong>Bedsheet ghosts are a familiar pop <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword> trope</strong></h2><p>This is far from the first time that bedsheet ghosts have emerged in pop culture, or internet culture at large. As <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/who-invented-the-bedsheet-ghost">Natalie Shure wrote for The Daily Beast in 2017</a>, the costume has made appearances in iconic media ranging from "Charlie Brown" to "SpongeBob SquarePants." While early depictions of ghosts in works like Shakespeare's "Hamlet" skewed more realistic — the ghost of Hamlet's father wears armor, for example — they presented challenges for artists to differentiate between ghosts and humans. <a href="https://talesoftimesforgotten.com/2019/10/27/why-are-ghosts-depicted-wearing-bedsheets/">Ghosts started appearing in burial shrouds</a>, morphing into the billowing sheet imagery we associate with ghosts today.</p><p>Bedsheet ghosts, Shure wrote, became a popular costume during Halloween's earliest years in the United States. The costume fell more out of fashion after the Second World War due to a variety of factors including changing perceptions of ghosts in popular culture. After the Ku Klux Klan became a part of American consciousness and, Shure wrotes, the costume brought about "horrific new connotations for white bedsheets, which now evoked hatred rather than holiday fun."</p><p>The image of the bedsheet ghost continued to appear in pop culture through the 20th century and into the 21st, featured in media like <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmN6sWYHBKg">"Scooby Doo,"</a> "E.T.," and <a href="https://time.com/collection-post/71011/evan-spiegel-and-bobby-murphy-2014-time-100/">Snapchat photo shoots</a>. </p><h2><strong style="background-color: #ffffff;"> KKK garb and sheet ghosts share visual and symbolic elements, and this isn't the first time it's been pointed out</strong></h2><p>While the bedsheet ghost became a pop culture symbol that persisted through the latter half of the 20th century, that doesn't fully divorce its connections the Klan outfit, according to David Cunningham, the chair of the Department of Sociology at Washington University in St. Louis and the author of <a href="https://books.google.com/books/about/Klansville_U_S_A.html?id=fBQhe8jcXZEC">"Klansville, U.S.A.: The Rise and Fall of the Civil Rights-Era Ku Klux Klan,"</a>.</p><p>"The KKK's use of white robes and hoods dates to the group's origins in the 1860s, and the now-familiar uniform of the Klan was formalized in the early 20th century," he told Insider via email.</p><p>"The 'ghostly' imagery of these robes was intentional, as the KKK's original aim was in part to portray spectral figures that would terrorize its targets. Today, the Klan's white sheets are perhaps the most widely-known and resonant symbol of organized racism, and as such they clearly echo in 'ghost' costumes such as the ones we're seeing on TikTok," he said.</p><p>This isn't the first time that the shared symbolism between bedsheet ghosts and KKK robes have been pointed out, or even satirized. In the seventh episode of "South Park," titled <a href="https://southpark.fandom.com/wiki/Pinkeye">"Pinkeye,"</a> Cartman, initially dressed as Hitler, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLwguZnvguQ">inadvertently ends up dressed as a member of the KKK</a> after the school principal makes him an impromptu "scary ghost costume."</p><p><a href="https://www.kcra.com/article/ghost-or-kkk-students-suspended-for-kkk-like-costumes/6502598#">Local news station KCRA 3</a> also reported on a 2016 incident in which three Florida high school students were suspended after wearing what appeared to be KKK costumes to school. KCRA 3 reports that the students claimed that they were dressed as ghosts.</p><h2><strong>This particular iteration of the TikTok trend appears to have begun in September</strong></h2><p>The TikTok trend that's currently circulating — bedsheet ghosts, photoshoots, and in particular, the Jack Stauber "Oh Klahoma" soundtrack — appears to have originated with TikTok user @jackjanson88, who posted a ghost photoshoot video on September 9.</p> <p>Jack, 15, told Insider that a few days before doing the photoshoot, he was listening to Phoebe Bridger's "Motion Sickness." The cover for that particular album, 2017's "Stranger in the Alps" features a depiction of a ghost with human arms. </p><p>Jack said that he was "craving that Halloween vibe," and that after picking up a sheet at Hobby Lobby, he had a clear vision for the photoshoot that included his Doc Martens, white socks that went up to his shins, and the sheet itself. Some even <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@k9_lando/video/6873516062181199109?sender_device=pc&amp;sender_web_id=6806800094646896133&amp;is_from_webapp=1webapp=1">bring their pets into the picture as well</a>.</p>   <h2><strong>On Twitter, the trend received criticism for the ghost costume's similarity to KKK robes</strong></h2><p>New York Times technology reporter Taylor Lorenz tweeted a thread of ghost photoshoot TikTok videos on Tuesday, September 22. The thread began with two photos of a group of people together in bedsheet ghost costumes, several of them wearing sunglasses over the sheets. </p><p>The thread sparked a wave of criticism of the trend, with people pointing out that the costume was reminiscent of KKK garb and that the photos had the potential to evoke much different reactions other than the front-facing whimsy that's pervasive on TikTok.</p><p>2020 has seen massive upheaval against racial injustice following the killings of Black Americans including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/protests-death-george-floyd-minneapolis-new-york-denver-2020-5#police-across-the-country-were-accused-of-using-heavy-handed-tactics-against-protesters-over-the-weekend-mowing-them-down-with-cruisers-destroying-water-jugs-and-shoving-people-to-the-ground-30">George Floyd</a> and <a href="https://www.insider.com/breonna-taylor-shot-dead-louisville-house-police-narcotics-bust-2020-5">Breonna Taylor by police</a>. And, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/not-being-fully-free-toll-everyday-racism-black-americans-n1223641">as NBC News' Janell Ross wrote in June</a>, "black Americans are exhausted. They are grieving. They are angry."</p><p>On Twitter, <a href="https://twitter.com/KyleStack/status/1308504085910286336?s=20">some said</a> that a social media trend like this felt wrong for 2020, or that ghosts weren't the first things they thought of when they saw people in white sheets. <a href="https://twitter.com/giniponder/status/1308508111095898112?s=20">Others defended the trend</a>.</p><p>Jada, 16, <a href="https://twitter.com/vvsjada/status/1308554114666819586?s=20">commented under a</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/bigracks/status/1308472387671859200?s=20">viral quote retweet</a> of Lorenz's original tweet, remarking on the discussion itself and what she saw as white people telling Black people in the comments to "shut up" when they "clearly [felt] uncomfortable."</p><p>Jada told Insider over text that when she first saw the trend, she initially thought she was seeing KKK imagery. "It made me uncomfortable bc of the history behind the kkk and seeing a bunch of white kids in white sheets just doesn't sit right with me at all," she said.</p><p>On Twitter, Lorenz <a href="https://twitter.com/TaylorLorenz/status/1308562487948660737?s=20">said that she was sorry</a> for any offense her thread may have caused. She told Insider that she felt that she should not have led with the group photos because she thought that it misrepresented the photo challenge, and said that the photos and videos read differently on Twitter than on TikTok given that reposting them strips them of their original context.</p><p>"I just think that context matters for all of this stuff so much, and to strip context and strip agency from the people who have participated in this and try to reframe it is kind of disingenuous," Lorenz told Insider.</p><p>"On a whole, I just think there's a lot more background to this challenge and I think the way it's presented on Twitter is so radically different. The majority of people are consuming this content in context, with captions, on TikTok, or in context, with captions, on Instagram," she said.</p><h2><strong>On TikTok, people pointed out similarities between the ghost costumes and KKK robes as well</strong></h2><p>Criticism of the trend isn't limited to Twitter. While comments remarking on the ghost photos or tagging friends to participate are dominant in comment sections on TikTok, several videos also had comments that pointed out the visual similarities between the sheets and KKK garb.</p><p><a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@frankiesfun/video/6875405315190344961?sender_device=pc&amp;sender_web_id=6806800094646896133&amp;is_from_webapp=1webapp=1">One video from @frankiesfun</a> features people in both white and red sheets (<a href="https://www.heritagefl.com/photos/big/8445/12">some members of the KKK wore red sheets as well</a> to distinguish rank) and garnered a significant number of comments regarding the sheet color choice. One comment reads, "Y'all lowkey look like klan members hahahha." Another reads, "soooo here's the thing. Red and white.... maybe not the best combo." </p> <p>@frankiesfun addressed the criticism in the comments, writing, "We genuinely did not know that red was a bad color for this trend. I'm sorry if anyone was offended. Our intention was to make it different."</p><h2><strong>Many creators had pure intentions participating in the trend, but that doesn't mitigate its effect</strong></h2><p>David Cunningham, the sociology professor, said that a "lack of a broad public conversation that acknowledges and addresses the nation's history of racist violence" can lead to a blind spot among white creators when it comes to the impact of their actions, however well-intentioned, on communities of color.</p><p>"Working to understand the experiences of others builds an awareness of how this sort of ostensibly-harmless social media trend can and does tap into a history of injustice," he told Insider.</p><p>Context, and the nature of the photoshoots themselves, is important. Jack, the 15-year-old who has largely been credited with starting this particular iteration of the trend on TikTok, said that he hadn't gotten any comments related to the KKK until people in larger groups began to do it. He also said that he had seen other videos in which a group of people were holding an American flag or were near a bonfire.</p><p>"In my head, obviously I would never have that intent with a photoshoot I have," he told Insider. "But definitely there are some people that are getting angry, and I totally understand that." </p><p>Jack said, however, that he thought that the trend had resonated on TikTok because it was a way to get good photos without having to show your face.
