Broadband isn't the same thing as Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is the wireless network that broadcasts internet signals around your home or office. "Broadband" describes the type and speed of those signals, which are delivered to your home and then passed through a router. Not only do they use fundamentally different technologies to get the data to your door, but they vary by speed and price. Here is a brief overview of each: <h3>Cable</h3><div type="image" title="Coax Cable modem" height="970" width="1941" msid="81876148" hostid="261"></div>Broadband <keyword id="1599826" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="cable-internet">cable internet</keyword> uses the same coaxial cable that brings cable TV into your home; it's become a popular form of broadband because it lets consumers use the same company for their television and internet access.Cable is fairly fast, usually able to reach speeds as high as 500Mbps (depending upon the service plan you choose). Cable's bandwidth is shared among everyone in a service area, though, so you might find it slows down in the evening when everyone is at home and streaming video. <h3>DSL</h3><div type="image" title="A laptop and router" height="1061" width="2122" msid="81876151" hostid="261"></div>Digital subscriber line (DSL) uses phone lines to send and receive data and is championed by traditional phone service providers to leverage their infrastructure. In <a href="https://www.speedtest.net/global-index">Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index</a>, India managed to increase the download speed from 13.67 Mbps to 14.19 Mbps in April, meanwhile <keyword id="13974368" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fixed-broadband-speed" source="Orion">fixed broadband speed</keyword> dropped from 48.15 Mbps to 48.09 Mbps. Broadband speeds in India have dipped, but at the same time, mobile download speeds have increased. These numbers helped India to reach 118th rank globally but a drop in download speed has taken the country to 76th rank from 72nd rank. Countries with leading internet speed According to the latest rankings, United Arab Emirates and Singapore gained the top spots as UAE has a median download speed of 134.48 Mbps for mobile and Singapore has 207.61 Mbps for fixed broadband. War struck country Ukraine following Papua and New Guinea was among the biggest gainers in April 2022. Ukraine gained the highest number for median mobile broadband efficiency and Papua for fixed broadband performance. According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data for March this year, Reliance Jio delivered the fastest download speeds. During March, Reliance Jio offered an average speed of 21.20 Mbps in February. Vodafone Idea and Airtel delivered 17.9 Mbps and 13.7 Mbps download speeds respectively. In terms of upload speed, Vodafone Idea led the category with an average upload speed of 8.2 Mbps, followed by Jio at 7.3 Mbps, and Airtel at 6.1 Mbps. India climbs two ranks in speed test for mobile broadband speed but fixed broadband speed dips: Ookla

<ul><li><keyword id="6355725" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-group">Tata group</keyword>’s Nelco is reportedly in final talks with Canadian firm Telesat to bring its Lightspeed satellite broadband internet services in India.</li><li>Both companies plan to ready their <keyword id="10986173" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="satellite-broadband-services">satellite broadband services</keyword> by 2024 in India and globally.</li><li>Tata and Telesat are also working on ways to make their services affordable to users.</li></ul>India may have the second-highest number of internet users in the world but there’s still a large fraction of people especially in the rural areas without access to high-speed internet connectivity. The solution to this problem could be satellite broadband connectivity that will cover even remote areas where telecom towers or fibre connections are hard to reach. There are already three companies planning to provide satellite broadband internet in India, and the latest to join is Tata group’s Nelco. According to a <a href="https://m.economictimes.com/industry/telecom/telecom-news/pact-with-telesat-likely-for-satellite-broadband/amp_articleshow/85190916.cms">report</a> by ET Telecom, Nelco is planning to offer satellite broadband services in India through the Canadian firm Telesat’s Lightspeed brand. Both companies are in the final stages of the arrangement, and plan to offer its services in India by 2024, the report added. Satellite broadband services aim to solve problems that mobile internet or fibre broadband can’t but it’s also the most expensive of the three. Tata and Telesat plan to work on the business-to-business (B2B) model wherein the satellite bandwidth will be offered to telcos so that they can provide to areas where mobile connectivity is weak. The two companies also plan to work on ways to make satellite broadband affordable in India. Telesat’s global plan for satellite broadband services include an investment of almost $5 billion for a constellation of around 298 LEO satellites. Although expensive, LEO satellites offer stronger signals and faster speeds than traditional fixed-satellite networks as they orbit closer to the Earth. Telesat and Tata plan to take things further with their satellite broadband services once the new Spacecom policy that should offer better clarity for LEO satellite systems operators and setting up in-country satellite gateways, is out. Tata group to offer satellite broadband services in India through Telesat’s Lightspeed brand

India has recorded the <keyword id="11889333" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="highest-growth-in-fixed-broadband">highest growth in fixed broadband</keyword> download speed at 60.06 Mbps, a growth from 40.45 Mbps, which was recorded in July 2020, according to <keyword id="11889332" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ooklas-Speedtest-Global-Index-">Ookla's Speedtest Global Index.</keyword> The fixed broadband upload speed also witnessed a spike from 35.04 Mbps in July 2020 to 56.47 Mbps in July 2021. The Speedtest Global Index released by Ookla for the month of July ranks India on 68th spot, up by 7 ranks from that of last year in the fixed <keyword id="1935952" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="broadband-speed">broadband speed</keyword> segment. India's overall performance in mobile download speed has increased consistently, with a slight dip in the months from December 2020 to April 2021. While there was also a slight decrease in mobile download speed from June 2021 to July 2021, 17.84 Mbps to 17.77 Mbps, respectively, India maintained its global mobile ranking at 122nd place. As per the July Global Speedtest Index, the UAE and Monaco have maintained the top spots, same as in June 2021, in mobile broadband and fixed broadband segments with a mean download speed of 190.03 Mbps and 256.70 Mbps, respectively. The recent report by Ookla on the Indian telecom market is already anticipating growth in the network performance post 5G spectrum roll out. According to Speedtest data, recent 5G launches in the Asia Pacific point to a potential 10x increase in median download speeds (5G vs 4G-LTE). Ookla's Speedtest Global Index compares Speedtest data from around the world each month. India clocks the highest growth rate in fixed broadband download speed

So much so, before the launch of Reliance Jio today, his competitor Bharti Airtel launched a new set of plans to brace against the onslaught. At Reliance Industries’ <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/reliance-jio-fired-up-as-mukesh-ambani-joins-hands-with-satya-nadellas-microsoft-to-challenge-jeff-bezos-in-india/articleshow/70641754.cms">annual general meeting</a>, Ambani promised a minimum speed of 100 mbps for Jio Fiber. He also said that his plans will start at ₹700 per month. Hathaway isn’t going to be left behind. The company’s new ‘Freedom Plan’ offers 100 mbps at ₹699 per month with a data cap of 1 TB. But, here’s what most people don’t know — <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/the-difference-between-mukesh-ambanis-jio-and-ani-ambanis-reliance-communications/articleshow/70869465.cms">Reliance Jio</a> owns 51.3% stake in Hathaway. Offering plans and tariffs at par with what Jio has to offer will only helping Reliance’s broadband with its last-mile connectivity, and help Ambani mop up the market at various price points. One way is by introducing a plan that’s offering half the speed at half the price. For users who feel like they don’t really need 100 mbps can opt for a 50 mbps plan at ₹399 without limits on data consumption. Hathaway’s also offering 150 mbps plans at ₹1,499 per month with a data cap of 1TB. The only catch is that Hathaway requires a minimum three-month subscription in other for users to sign up for its services. Airtel’s plans are pricier but allows you to carry forward data Airtel also has a broadband plan for ₹799 a month but it offers speeds of 40 mbps with data capped at 100GB. Airtel’s V-Fiber broadband is offering another 200GB of additional data for a span of six months within that plan — but it’s a mere fraction of what Jio and Hathaway have up for grabs. Airtel could have a leg up on Jio, depending on the conditions of plans, since it allows users to carry forward any unused data. If you’re looking for speed, Airtel’s 100 mbps plan costs ₹1099 per month with a data cap of 500GB and an additional 300GB for six months. The devil could be in the terms and conditions Jio hasn’t completely disclosed the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/what-are-the-rules-to-apply-for-jio-fiber/articleshow/70891242.cms">details</a> of its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/how-to-get-jio-fiber-broadband-service/articleshow/70821752.cms">broadband plans</a> and the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/how-reliance-jio-gigafiber-broadband-will-work/articleshow/70821794.cms">many conditions</a> that it could come with. It will have to rival Airtel’s 300 mbps plan pegged at ₹1599 per month that’s offering 600 GB and an addition 1TB for six months. Ambani did disclose that Jio Fiber’s plans, while starting at ₹700, will have options that extend to up to ₹10,000 per month. But, Jio also intends to lock in users with annual plans, and this offer might only be available for a ‘limited’ period. To connect to the services, Jio users will need to make security deposit of ₹4,500 and obtain the ONT device (GigaHub Home Gateway) provided by the company. Those looking to switch internet services should also study the ability of their provider to offer top-notch service, which is essential for broadband services. At the end of the day, it would be bold to replace television with broadband as it all hinges on speed and quality. They averaged 115.22 Mbps during the second quarter, Speedtest said in its report.Fixed broadband providers, including AT&amp;T Internet and Comcast, deliver internet through a phone line or fiber optic cables.Starlink's average download speed in the first quarter of 2021 was 65.72 Mbps, Speedtest said.With a 100 Mbps download speed, users can download a film in under a minute, according to the <a href="https://www.uswitch.com/broadband/guides/broadband-download-times/">USwitch speed calculator</a>.According to the Speedtest report, fixed broadband recorded median latency of 14 milliseconds (ms) in the second quarter. Starlink was the only <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starlink-amazon-oneweb-companies-compete-satellite-internet-2021-4?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">satellite service</a> to come close to this, with latency of 45 ms, according to the report. Latency is a measure of the time it takes to send data and receive a response, and the shorter the time, the better.Starlink has lower latency speeds than <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starlink-amazon-oneweb-companies-compete-satellite-internet-2021-4?r=US&amp;IR=T#hughes-net-4et-4">HughesNet</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starlink-amazon-oneweb-companies-compete-satellite-internet-2021-4?r=US&amp;IR=T#viasat-3at-3">Viasat</a>, competitors cited in the Speedtest report, because its satellites are closer to Earth.The Speedtest report showed that HughesNet and Viasat provided average download speeds of 19.73 Mbps and 18.13 Mbps respectively in the second quarter.In October, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starlink-public-beta-how-to-join-price-cost-subscription-2020-10?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">Starlink told its users</a> that they should expect download speeds between 50 and 150 Mbps and latency from 20ms to 40ms as the company enhanced its systems. However, it stressed that this is not enough for a 'mobile first' country. The Forum said that it is unfortunate that as many as 45,180 villages in India do not have any 4G coverage at all. "While this upgradation in minimum broadband speed is indeed a big milestone, India still has a long way to go to catch up with major regimes like the US where the regulator (FCC) has already prescribed a minimum broadband speed of 25Mbps," said the BIF. Even Bangladesh has prescribed a higher minimum broadband speed of 5Mbps. Still, the move will help in lifting the overall quantum of per capita data consumption and improve the service experience. Being a 'mobile first' country, India heavily relies on mobile broadband with almost 98 per cent of the broadband users accessing it via their mobile phones. "2Mbps may not sound good enough for the modern broadband era as one would need much higher speeds for satisfactory experience in applications viz. telecommuting, file downloading, video conferencing, streaming video - both SD &amp; HD," said <keyword id="1146565" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tv-ramachandran" source="Orion">TV Ramachandran</keyword>, President, BIF. Nevertheless, "this strong nudge provided by the government will definitely help ensure improved consumer experience and consumer satisfaction," <keyword id="90527" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ramachandran" source="Orion">Ramachandran</keyword> added. The move will particularly benefit consumers in rural areas, suburban areas and fringes of metros who are heavy video consumers and rely more on video and data-rich apps. "Studies have shown that for experiencing good quality of video streaming one needs to have download speeds much in excess of even 5Mbps and probably nearer values of 14Mbps or 15Mbps," said the BIF. KOLKATA: Telecom engineers and fibre specialists at <keyword id="147780" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vedanta-group">Vedanta Group</keyword> company Sterlite Technologies are finalising the ‘proof of concept’ of a close variant of the ‘<keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> Fibre’ project to transform the urban home broadband experience in India’s top 20 cities and, in turn, boost high-speed internet penetration. 
 
But unlike the US search giant, which will directly take its ultrafast fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) drive across US cities, Sterlite will deliver super-fast fibre broadband connectivity at 20 to 50 Mbps speeds to urban homes through partner mobile operators. 
 “We will shortly showcase our FTTH broadband technology blueprint to <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> and <keyword id="6359475" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Teleservices">Tata Teleservices</keyword> to line up the first wave of partnerships,” Sterlite Technologies CEO Anand Agarwal told ET. The company is initially looking to hook up a million homes by 2016 across Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Chennai. 
 “Sterlite’s faster home <keyword id="2528457" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="broadband-model">broadband model</keyword> has parallels with the Google Fibre project as the network and services to end consumers would be similar, but company roles will be different as we plan to work with telcos as catalyst-cumsystem integrators to create a pan-India urban broadband network, unlike Google, which will directly serve US consumers as an internet service provider,” said Agarwal. 
 
Its plan to partner with telcos comes at a time when mobile operators are increasingly focusing on data revenues to fuel future growth. 
 “A faster fibre broadband option along the lines of a ‘Google Fibre’ can be handy for incumbents Bharti <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword>, Vodafone India or <keyword id="6354924" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Idea-Cellular">Idea Cellular</keyword>, which are known to be cherry picking lucrative data customers in urban zones in anticipation of intense competition from Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio Infocomm, which is reckoned to launch its 4G voice and data services by March next year,” a Mumbaibased sector analyst said, requesting anonymity. 
 At present, Google’s ultra-fast fibre internet service is reportedly available in <keyword id="131662" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kansas-City">Kansas City</keyword> and Provo, Utah, and will be expanded soon to Austin, Texas. According to international news reports, Google plans to take its faster home broadband service to some 34 US cities shortly. 
 
Elaborating on Sterlite’s fibre broadband model, Agarwal said the company would deliver last mile broadband connectivity to an urban home by plugging its FTTH network to the nearest point of interconnect (PoI) of a partner mobile operator, which could be an exchange or base station. 
 
Agarwal, however, agreed that Sterlite’s FTTH network expansion would hinge on telco demand for using its fibre-to-home technology. “We will ink revenue-sharing pacts with telco partners only after jointly assessing whether a particular urban neighbourhood is ready for fibre,” he said. 
 
Under its build-to-demand approach, the company will extend last mile fibre optic internet connectivity to individual homes and residential high rises only after “it is assured of adequate demand for faster broadband services at the consumer end”. 
 
Incidentally, Sterlite Technologies is a key optic fibre cable supplier for the Rs 21,000-crore national optic fibre network (NOFN) project that will be take high-speed internet to 2.5 lakh village blocks across the country. It has also secured contracts to supply such cables for a mega telecom network that BSNL is building for the armed forces.
