<ul><li>Shares of fast moving consumer goods company fell 5% after the company reported lower than expected volume growth along with cautious commentary.</li><li>The company reported 9% year-on-year growth in net profit to ₹2,187 crore as against ₹2,009 crore in the same quarter last year.</li><li>Further, the company said they remain cautiously optimistic about demand recovery.</li></ul>Shares of consumer goods company <keyword id="6365619" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindustan-unilever" source="Orion">Hindustan Unilever</keyword> (HUL) fell as much as 5% on Tuesday after the company reported its September quarter earnings. Although the company reported 9% year-on-year growth in net profit to ₹2,187 crore as against ₹2,009 crore in the same quarter last year, investors were disappointed on lower than expected volume growth. The company delivered 4% year-on-year volume growth in the July-September quarter lower than estimates of 5-7%. Food segment that includes products like Horlicks, Kissan, Bru, Kwality Wall’s saw a slowdown in revenue growth. Food segment grew only 7% in the September quarter as against 12% in the June quarter. Hindustan Unilever attributed the dull growth in the food segment to reasonably high sales in the previous quarters. <div type="image" title="HUL cchart" height="900" width="1200" msid="87136921" hostid="261"></div> The company has declared a dividend of ₹15 per share in this quarter. Adding to it, the company gave a cautious remark on the demand recovery. “Looking forward, we remain cautiously optimistic about demand recovery,” said Sanjiv Mehta, chairman and managing director of HUL. Meanwhile, muted consumer sentiment with rising inflation bothered the (fast moving consumer goods) FMCG major. “September quarter witnessed a sequential improvement in trading conditions, albeit remained challenging with unprecedented levels of input cost inflation and subdued consumer sentiments,” added Mehta in a statement to stock exchanges. Horlicks and Boost maker HUL sees slowdown in food segment in the last three months

<ul><li>The company said that the total payout of the interim dividend is ₹10.86 crore.</li><li><keyword id="5030468" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="easemytrip" source="Orion">EaseMyTrip</keyword> has announced its first dividend in April 2021 almost a month after its listing.</li><li> The company reported over 330% year-on-year increase in its consolidated net profit in Q2 of 2021.</li></ul>Travel ticketing platform Easy Trip Planner — which goes by the name EaseMyTrip — has declared an interim dividend of 50% or ₹1 per equity share of the face value of ₹2 for the fiscal year 2022 that ends in March next year. The company said that the total payout of the interim dividend is ₹10.86 crore. The said dividend on equity shares will be credited to the members as per the records of the depositories as beneficial owners of the equity shares, as on November 22. The interim dividend will be paid on or before December 10, 2021. EaseMyTrip has announced its first dividend in April 2021 almost a month after its listing on the stock exchange. The latest development comes soon after EaseMyTrip announced its financial result for July to September quarter of 2021. The company reported over 330% year-on-year increase in its consolidated net profit. The gross booking revenue (GBR) stood at ₹895.1 crore in the June to September quarter. “EaseMyTrip has a uniquely sustainable and profitable model and our results have consistently demonstrated this all the time. Even in this fiscal, we witnessed phenomenal growth across all segments in the H1FY22 [first half of financial year 2022]. It also reflects a strong recovery of India's travel sector, which was severely impacted by the pandemic,” Nishant Pitti, chief executive and cofounder of EaseMyTrip, said. The company offers access to more than 400 international and domestic airlines, over one million hotels as well as train/bus tickets and taxi rentals across India. EaseMyTrip was founded in 2008 and claims to have more than 11 million customers. Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEEL) up over 2% The shares of Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEEL) gained over 2%, a day after the company unveiled a major strategic restructuring to focus on revenue maximisation and foray into newer territories. Vedanta shares gain 3% Vedanta shares trade 3% higher ahead of the board meeting, which is scheduled to meet on October 24 to consider and approve the first interim dividend for FY21. GMM Pfaudler trades 1% higher Even in the volatile market, the shares of GMM Pfaudler were trading one percent higher. The company has reported a 29.14% jump in its consolidated net profit to ₹26.85 crore for the second quarter ended September 30. KPIT Tech shed over 3% The software technology company KPIT Tech shed over 3% after the company reported a 2.5% fall in its net profit to ₹27.8 crore for the quarter ended September 30. JK Tyre shares gain 6% The shares of tyre major JK Tyre gained over 6% during the morning trade on Thursday after the company reported strong QoQ growth in Q2. The company reported a net profit at ₹109.68 crore against the loss ₹204.17 crore in the first quarter. Bajaj Finserv trades 2% higher The shares of private lender Bajaj Finserv rose over 2% after it reported a 5.8% jump in its total income to ₹15,051.59 crore during the second quarter ended September 30. <ul><li>The average purchasing power in India is depleting fast that is likely to affect consumer demand.</li><li>However, benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty have recently hit record levels thanks to a surge in corporate profits, most of which came from cost cutting.</li><li>The sustained fall in household savings, both financial and physical assets like gold or real estate, over the last five years has been worsened by the fall in wages.</li><li>This has led to a sharp fall in consumer confidence and that is bad news for companies looking to sell cars, jewellery, home appliances, and even shares and other financial investments.</li></ul>Forget gross domestic product (GDP) and the high-as-a-kite stock markets. Even the Narendra Modi government likes to <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/india-gdp-in-ppp-terms-more-than-bdeshs-govt/articleshow/78671559.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">cite the country’s purchasing power when cornered</a>. But even that is on a slide, a not-so-merry one. It’s hardly a surprise given the knockout punch that the COVID-19 virus has delivered. Businesses looking to protect their bottomline have laid off a lot of employees, and many of those who still have jobs aren’t earning as much as they used to. On the other hand, <a href="https://zeenews.india.com/markets/sensex-hits-fresh-record-high-tops-44000-level-2325095.html" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">Sensex has kissed new highs</a> because corporate profits have surged in the latest quarterly statements. However, as Mahesh Vyas from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, a business information firm, pointed out, between July and September 2020, corporate profits grew over 20%, the rebound in wages was just 3.8% after a sharp fall in the preceding quarter. And this is likely to be a continuing trend. As <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/company/corporate-trends/why-companies-profits-have-rebounded-faster-than-wages-during-covid-pandemic/articleshow/79308002.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">Vyas put it</a>, “The lockdown has taught companies a lesson or two on running business with fewer human resources. These lessons are unlikely to be forgotten.” That’s bad news for companies looking to sell cars, jewellery, home appliances, and even shares and other financial investments. There is more evidence of where the profits are flowing from. All the companies analysed by broking firm Motilal Oswal, put together, saw a decline of 7% in sales but a 16% jump in profit after tax. Simply put, most of the profit came from cost cutting and not a rise in demand. Consumer insights firm Nielsen recently explained the phenomenon. The Indian consumer is trading down in certain segments, those who can are buying larger packs to save money, and opting for more private labels. And the larger pessimism is visible in <a href="https://rbidocs.rbi.org.in/rdocs/Publications/PDFs/CCS09102023E6F5FCA08F4C4BAB9F599F5D9DC754.PDF" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">the consumer confidence data</a>, put out by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which is breaking the charts on the wrong side. People do not expect to spend more on non-essential items even in the next one year. <div type="image" title="rbi ccs" msid="79317971" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Indian consumer&amp;#39;s expectation of spending on non-essential items is abysmally low.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The Indian consumer’s ability or willingness to spend had started eroding long before the pandemic. And, on an average, there has been a steady decline in household savings in India, to a point that this year’s estimate is the lowest since at least 2012. The pinch is much worse for people who are retired, many of whom living on their savings lying at the banks. The interest on long-term fixed deposits make less money compared to the savings account, which is much lower than the current inflation. Nonetheless, if the projections hold, the GDP would have fallen approximately 6% below its pre-COVID level and it may take years to regain this lost output,” Deputy Governor of the RBI and a member of the Monetary Policy Committee Michael D Patra recently <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/rate-cut-will-depend-upon-moderation-in-inflation-rbi-governor-shanktikanta-das/articleshow/78829858.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">said</a>. The gloom, too, shall pass eventually. But to experience a boom people need jobs, good wages and a feeling of certainty. And that will only come from new corporate investment that can generate employment. And it has to happen sooner than later. Else, India’s famed demographic dividend would have been squandered.
