Colonel Bhuwanesh K Thapa (Retd) recalled that his son was inspired by him and from his childhood wanted to join the <keyword id="19908736" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Indian Army" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Indian Army">Indian Army</keyword>. "I feel proud for my son," the retired <keyword id="20187662" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Army-officer" source="keywords">Army officer</keyword> said. "This is an Army operation and there is always risk in such ops," he told PTI over phone from Jing Tea Estate in Darjeeling's Lebong. Col Thapa maintained that whatever the risk is, the Army personnel have to work sincerely. "My son has done well in such a risky operation and did it sincerely," he said. Col Thapa said that Brijesh was a qualified engineer, but opted to join the Army. "He was 27 years old and joined the Army five years back," he said. He said that Brijesh last spoke to him over the phone on July 14. The retired Army officer said that he was informed of the incident by the authorities on Monday night.

"General Upendra Dwivedi COAS and all ranks of the Indian Army convey their deepest condolences to the Bravehearts, Captain Brijesh Thapa, Naik D Rajesh, Sepoy Bijendra and Sepoy Ajay, who laid down their lives in the line of duty while undertaking a counter-terrorist operation in Doda to ensure peace in the region. <keyword id="19938724" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kupwara" source="keywords">Kupwara</keyword> (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], July 24 (ANI): A joint search operation launched by the <keyword id="19908736" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Army" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Indian Army" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Indian Army">Indian Army</keyword> and the <keyword id="161066" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-and-Kashmir-Police" source="Orion">Jammu and Kashmir Police</keyword> in the <keyword id="22524809" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kowut" source="Orion">Kowut</keyword> area of Kupwara has led to the elimination of a <keyword id="19920330" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="terrorist" source="keywords">terrorist</keyword> and injury to a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO). Based on specific intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists in the region, the operation commenced in the days leading up to July 23. Vigilant troops observed suspicious movement on July 24 and challenged the individuals. In response, the terrorists opened indiscriminate fire, triggering a fierce exchange. In a separate incident, two Indian Army soldiers were injured in an encounter with terrorists in the Kastigarh area of Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday. On July 15, based on specific intelligence inputs, a <keyword id="19935120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="joint-operation" source="keywords">joint operation</keyword> by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police was in progress in an area North of Doda. According to the White Knight Corps, contact with terrorists was established at about 9 pm during which a heavy firefight ensued. Four soldiers, including an officer, were killed in action. The soldiers killed in action have been identified as Captain Brijesh Thapa, Naik D Rajesh, Sepoy Bijendra, and Sepoy Ajay.
