It’s final. The United Kingdom will ‘LEAVE’ the <keyword id="6355110" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="European-Union">European Union</keyword>. It will no longer be a part of the 28 member European nation’s bloc that constituted the EU. As historic a decision as it is, it will also have a sure shot impact on India as well. This is what will happen now: 
 
Volatility in the Stock Market As a result of huge sell-offs by foreign investors, to hedge their losses in emerging markets. While stock markets in the UK are expected to tumble as much as 20%, in India, post an immediate knee-jerk reaction in the markets given sell-offs, it will largely smooth out. In fact, Sensex opened 780 points down at 26227, while the Nifty was down 247 points at 8022. That said, Indian markets are expected to largely stabilise over a 10-15 day window, given domestic indicators like monsoon and inflation are largely stable and healthy. The Government in India and its other independent regulators protecting its currency are however in full charge of the situation. In a statement released on June 22, the Reserve Bank of India said, “In the run up to the referendum in the United Kingdom on its continuing in the European Union, uncertainty about the poll outcome has resulted in some amount of turbulence in global financial markets, including in India. The RBI is maintaining a close vigil on developments, and will take all necessary steps, including liquidity support, to ensure orderly conditions in financial markets.” There is an impending worry by experts who fear the rupee could fall to Rs68 to a Dollar, now that <keyword id="6355333" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Brexit">Brexit</keyword> is a reality. 
 
Trade 
India will largely benefit from the Brexit. India’s trade with the UK has been significantly rising over the last decade, more so over the last 5 years, whereas it’s trade with the rest of the EU has seen a steady decline, given unclear and confusing regulations along with tariff issues. India will now have greater flexibility to negotiate a bilateral Trade Agreement with the UK that has been languishing mostly given the ambiguous and extremely confusing laws governing the EU. India for the last 8 years now has been trying to strike a Free Trade Agreement with the EU, but again, given the complexity of the laws that require it to keep in mind and safeguard economies of 27 (post Brexit) member nations, it hasn’t seen the light of the day yet. Meanwhile, India’s bilateral trade with the UK stood at $14bn in 2016, with India exporting goods and services worth close to $9bn and imports from the UK counting at just over $5bn. 
 
Indian Companies in the UK 
There are over 800 Indian companies with operations in the UK, employing over a million people. However, the biggest company to get impacted will be Tata Motors, which owns UK’s largest carmaker, JLR. Tata Motors stocks were already down over 12% as soon as trade opened this morning. The others to face the music will be Motherson Sumi which was down over 10% as soon as trade opened. Then there are Pharma companies like Aurobindo Pharma and banks like ICICI and Axis Bank that have significant UK exposures. Most Indian companies in the UK use that country as an exporting base to the rest of the EU and some of their strategies will now have to be relooked into, given how domestic laws in the UK now change with regards exports and imports.

It’s a BREXIT! This is how India gets impacted

<keyword id="46894" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Sons">Tata Sons</keyword> said that access to markets and skilled workforce would be considered important post <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/brexit-impact-global-economy/articleshow/52899336.cms">Brexit</a>, adding that that each of its 19 firms having interests in the UK will be going in for a business review. 
 
"There are 19 independent Tata companies in the UK, with diverse businesses. Each company continuously reviews its strategy and operations in the light of developments, and will continue to do so," read a statement from Tata Sons. 
 
"Access to markets and skilled workforce will remain important considerations," the statement added. 
 
Tata Group stocks had a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Bloodbath-in-the-Indian-markets-as-Brexit-causes-panic/articleshow/52895611.cms">hard fall </a>this morning after the Brexit results, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Bloodbath-in-the-Indian-markets-as-Brexit-causes-panic/articleshow/52895611.cms">going down </a>by up to 13%. This could be cited to the Indian conglomerate's huge exposure to UK. 
 
Specifically, Tata Motors stocks fell 12.9%, Tata Steel tanked 10.89%, TCS plummeted 4.81%, Tata Elxsi dipped 9.21%, Tata Global Beverages saw a fall of 7.26%, Tata Chemicals drubbed 5.72% and Tata Communications went down by 5.34%. 
 
Tata Sons has been operational in the UK since 1907, and out of its 19 firms having interests in the region, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Tata-Motors-profits-treble/articleshow/52519229.cms">JLR </a>and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Tata-Steel-UK-sells-its-Europe-Long-Products-business-to-Greybull/articleshow/52536515.cms">Tata Steel </a>are most globally known.

And it is so because post <keyword id="6355333" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brexit">Brexit</keyword>, UK is planning closer ties than “required” with the <keyword id="6355110" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="european-union">European Union</keyword> (EU). UK Prime Minister, <keyword id="368666" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Theresa-May">Theresa May</keyword>, has also faced a lot of criticism over this decision recently. Post this decision, May’s Brexit minister and foreign secretary resigned in opposition stating that these ties with the EU will make trade deals with other countries more difficult, which might also turn out to be the case for India-UK trade. According to a confidential joint UK-India Trade Review released to ‘Greenpeace Unearthed’, India may not get any post-Brexit trade benefits. India has identified a list of barriers that do not relate to tariff at all but, nevertheless, cause an inconvenience when it comes to trade. The country wants the UK to reconsider these issues in the new Brexit trade deal. These barriers include limits on fungicides in Basmati rice, enforced food hygiene standards for milk and dairy products, and the use of hormone-disrupting chemicals across a range of non-food products. Any such change desired by India is unlikely to occur because these rules are imposed by the EU and the new Brexit plan is considering a "common rule book" for EU and UK applicable for goods. The Trade Review also covered life sciences and information technology. It formed the crux of the new UK-India trade partnership that was announced during PM Modi's visit to the UK in April for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). The Britain’s exit from EU is scheduled for 29 March of next year, however, the two haven’t decided on how trade relations between them are expected to turn out. Dominic Raab, who is the current Brexit secretary, stressed that UK will strike the right balance between freeing itself up to the market and protecting the existing arrangements with the EU. However, the prospects of changes in the trade policy that might be favourable to India seem bleak. According to experts, the post-Brexit trade policy will be as disadvantageous for the UK as it will be for India. It is also expected to be a "real blow" to UK's financial and related professional services sector and it will also make UK less able to create jobs, generate tax and support growth across the wider economy.

India has been insistent on the UK lifting barriers to skilled Indian workers. Hence, this will likely prolong trade talks. Nevertheless, Field’s remarks should worry the Modi administration. The Indian government has been appreciated for its business and economic reforms in recent years such as the bankruptcy code and indirect tax regime, leaping 53 places to 77 in the World Bank’s <keyword id="6354423" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ease-of-Doing-Business">Ease of Doing Business</keyword> rankings in the last two years. Clearly, there’s a lot more room for improvement. The EU's failed negotiations with India show why post-Brexit trade deals will be nearly impossible

While this indicates a major chaos in the UK, India is equally confused now about its decision to separate its Europe policy from its UK policy. This is how Britain’s election result impacts Indian foreign affairs

Can <keyword id="6355333" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Brexit">Brexit</keyword> open up new areas of opportunity for India and the UK? While it might still be too early to predict how things will pan out between India and the <keyword id="6361754" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="United-Kingdom">United Kingdom</keyword>, they don't look as bleak for India as they do for the <keyword id="6355123" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="EU">EU</keyword>. 
 In fact, if UKIP (<keyword id="3443351" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="uk-independent-party">UK Independent Party</keyword>) leader <keyword id="6609440" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nigel-Farage">Nigel Farage</keyword> is anyone to go by, Indians might find the UK more welcoming. 
 
In a recent interview he was quoted as saying, "I have to confess I do have a slight preference. I do think, naturally, that people from India and Australia are in some ways more likely to speak English, understand common law and have a connection with this country than some people that come perhaps from countries that haven't fully recovered from being behind the Iron Curtain." 
 Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> had told a press conference in <keyword id="6354968" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="London">London</keyword> last year that India considered the UK to be a gateway to Europe, indicating his preference for the 'Remain' camp. But the 'Leave' verdict could give India, the third largest investor in the UK, greater operating room in a country with which India has shared a historically warm relationship. 
 Rajya Sabha MP <keyword id="199084" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Swapan-Dasgupta">Swapan Dasgupta</keyword> is among those who believe that India should utilise the opportunity to forge a more meaningful partnership with <keyword id="11101" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Britain">Britain</keyword>. 
 
"It was a vote against an uncaring super state and uber cosmopolitanism. Yet, Brexit offers great opportunities to engage with a UK that is bound to become economically more free. If India gets into the act without delay, it may be possible to negotiate a mutually beneficial FTA that had become impossible under the EU. 
 
he UK can remain India's foremost trading outpost in the West. Brexit signals new opportunities for India and Indians." 
 
India's official reaction, however, was much more guarded and cautious. An external affairs ministry spokesperson said, "We value our multifaceted relationships with both the UK and the EU and will strive to further strengthen these ties in the years ahead." 
 
Brexit will undoubtedly have huge implications for the EU project and nobody can say for certain if London will retain its position as the premier financial capital. 
But there are some genuine worries also. What if Indian companies relocate to a country like, say, Ireland, as the new gateway to the EU? 
 That might cloud bilateral economic prospects which currently give India a position of some importance in the UK as evidenced by the British government's decision to intervene with labour unions after <keyword id="6357147" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Steel">Tata Steel</keyword> announced its exit.
