<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Bre Pettis, MakerBot's co-founder and CEO, will step down from his position to lead a new initiative called "Innovation Workshop," <a href="http://3dprint.com/14012/makerbot-ceo-bre-pettis/">3D Print reported Thursday.</a></span></p>
<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">It's unclear what exactly Pettis will be in charge of in his new role, but he will remain within Stratasys, the 3D printing company that acquired Makerbot for $403 million last year, the report said. </span></p>
<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">He will also be a board member of MakerBot, while Jenny Lawton will take over the CEO position.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">3D Print initially reported the news yesterday, based on an 'anonymous tip,' but it was made official today after Stratesys CEO David Reis released the following statement (via 3D Print):</span></p>
<p class="p2" style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"Stratasys and MakerBot are excited to announce some management changes at MakerBot that will take effect in the 3rd and 4th quarter of 2014 and into January 2015. Most notably, Bre Pettis will be transitioning from the day-to-day activities of management to a position with Stratasys where he will be able to influence and direct the vision of MakerBot and Stratasys; he will also be a member of the MakerBot Board of Directors. Jenny Lawton, president of MakerBot, will be promoted to the role of CEO of MakerBot; Frank Alfano is being moved from chief revenue officer to president. Aric Jennings, chief operations officer for MakerBot, will also transition into the international role of vice president of global manufacturing for Stratasys. We are excited about these promotions and pleased to continue the positive momentum that Sratasys and MakerBot have experienced and achieved."</span></p>
<p class="p4"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Pettis is one of the co-founders of MakerBot, a leading desktop 3D printing manufacturer. MakerBot was founded in 2009 and has won numerous awards for its groundbreaking technology, including Time Magazine's Best Inventions of 2012. </span></p>

MakerBot CEO Bre Pettis Steps Down

<p>A 3D printer is a robot-like device that manufacturers objects. MakerBot makes 3D printers affordable enough for the average hobbyist. Eventually, 3D printers could be part of every household and be used in all sorts of ways. For instance, instead of ordering replacement parts for a broken object, the manufacturer could ship you a 3D printer file and you would print the replacement part at home.</p>
<p>Now Pettis has revealed the next cool thing that MakerBot is working on: a 3D scanner called the Digitizer, <a href="http://www.popularmechanics.com/how-to/blog/sxsw-interview-makerbot-ceo-bre-pettis-15191970?click=pm_latest">reports Popular Mechanic's Jerry Beilinson.</a></p>
<p>A 3D scanner creates a 3D model of any small object. That's a lot easier than today's method of creating 3D models, which typically requires drawing the object in a 3D software program.</p>
<p>It could be used to jumpstart the product design process.</p>
<p>Digitizer will be released in the fall, Pettis says. He hasn't announced its price, but promises it will be affordable.</p>

Bre Pettis Just Revealed The Next Super Cool Product From MakerBot

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion have released diss tracks about each other.</li><li>Charlamagne tha God criticized "Big Foot" and Minaj's lyrics on "The Breakfast Club."</li></ul><p>Hip-hop had one hell of a weekend.</p><p>The<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/timeline-of-nicki-minaj-megan-thee-stallion-feud-2024-1"> latest celebrity feud</a> is between Megan Thee Stallion and Nicki Minaj, and hip-hop experts are already weighing in on who won — so far.</p><p>It all started on Friday when Megan dissed Nicki in her new single, "Hiss," prompting Nicki to reply with her own track. Although Megan didn't name anyone while taking a bevy of pointed jabs in the lyrics, many fans believed one line targeted Nicki Minaj and her husband, Kenneth Petty.</p><p>"These hoes don't be mad at Megan/these hoes mad at Megan's Law," Megan, 28, rapped. "I don't really know what the problem is/but I guarantee y'all don't want me to start."</p><p>In the US, <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stories-behind-us-laws-that-are-named-after-people-2018-12">Megan's Law</a> requires all states to establish sex offender registries. Minaj's husband, <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nicki-minaj-husband-kenneth-petty-sentenced-to-probation-home-detention-2022-7">Petty, is a registered sex offender</a> who previously served four years in prison after being convicted in 1995 for the attempted rape of a 16-year-old girl.</p><p>Minaj, 41, appeared to take the lyric personally, prompting her to bash Megan on social media platforms for several days publicly. Minaj referred to Megan as a<a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/NICKIMINAJ/status/1750981146769518645"> "manipulative liar" </a>and referenced her late mother several times. Minaj also suggested that Megan lied about Tory Lanez, who she said shot her in July 2020.</p><p><a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tory-lanez-guilty-all-3-charges-megan-thee-stallion-shooting-2022-12">A jury convicted Lanez in December 2022</a> of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence in relation to the shooting. Lanez maintained his innocence throughout the trial.</p><p>So far, Megan has remained relatively mum on Minaj's responses.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/timeline-of-nicki-minaj-megan-thee-stallion-feud-2024-1">The mostly one-sided drama</a> came to a head on Monday when Minaj released her diss track aimed at Megan titled "Big Foot."</p><p>"Bad bitch, she like 6 foot/ I call her big foot/ the bitch fell off/I said get up on your good foot," Minaj said in the lyrics, in a purported reference to Megan being shot in the foot.</p><p>Some of hip-hop's loudest voices are already weighing in on who's winning the rap beef.</p><p>Representatives for Minaj and Megan did not immediately respond to Business Insider's requests for comment.</p><h2><strong>Charlamagne tha God said Minaj fumbled her diss record</strong></h2><p>Charlamagne Tha God and his cohost DJ Envy of the syndicated radio show "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOr2rj44AyE">The Breakfast Club</a>" discussed the ongoing feud on Monday.</p><p>After playing the first bar of "Nicki Minaj's" song, Big Foot," which referenced Megan's deceased mother, Charlamagne explained why the song — which's already racked up over <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKkoBUPav3s">1 million listens on YouTube —</a>didn't leave a lasting impression on him.</p><p>"That ain't it, Nicki," Charlamagne said. "I don't know who Nicki got around her, but there's absolutely no reason that should have left the studio."</p><p>"I'm glad Nicki decided to finally rap and not just tweet, but no, that ain't it," he continued.</p><p>Charlamagne said that some stand-out bars fell flat because Minaj had already shared the sentiments with fans on Instagram Live and X, formerly Twitter. "It ain't hit the same," he added.</p><p>Charlamagne also dinged Minaj for going below the belt in her lyrics, adding that although he understands hip-hop's competitiveness, he didn't agree with Minaj talking about Megan's mother from "a human perspective."</p><h2><strong>Joe Budden argued that Minaj is a better rapper than Megan after "Hiss" dropped</strong></h2><p>Joe Budden also discussed Minaj and Megan's ongoing feud on his <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5eZtLTWklQ">eponymous podcast</a> on last Saturday's episode. Although Budden didn't react to "Big Foot" since it didn't hit streaming sites until midnight on Monday, he shared his thoughts on "Hiss" and appeared to lean toward Minaj.</p><p>"I don't think Megan thee Stallion is in the same breath as Nicki Minaj," Budden said.</p><p>When asked to clarify which categories, he responded: "In terms of nothing."</p><p>Budden added that although he liked Megan's record, he preferred Minaj's potential take. He cited Minaj's craftsmanship and touted her experience in the industry as evidence.</p><p>"Nicki is in the booth practicing cadence as we speak," Budden continued. "And if you can't just fill in the blanks on what she's in there saying? Oh my God! Oh, it's going to be great."</p><p>Budden added that Megan doesn't release singles quickly enough, in his opinion, to compete in this type of "warfare."</p><h2><strong>Elliot Wilson, the founder of Rap Radar, gave the win to Megan</strong></h2> <p>Hip-hop journalist Elliot Wilson shared his opinion on whether "Hiss" or "Big Foot" came out on top. X account Hip Hop Daily asked users to share which artists had the better song.</p><p>"Meg," Wilson wrote.</p><h2><strong>Neither Minaj nor Megan wins this battle. We do.</strong></h2><p>Both rappers have been trending on X and TikTok since this beef started. The Hotties and Barbs are trading blows even right now on social media, continuing to debate which rapper won this round.</p><p>Still, both sides are wrong. The actual winners are us. As sticky as these public quarrels can be, it's undeniably embedded in the culture and has brought fans some of the most exciting moments in music, including the iconic 2015 dispute between <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meek-mill-and-drakes-twitter-war-2015-7">Drake and Meek Mill that also involved Minaj</a>.</p><div type="image" title="nicki minaj" height="2000" width="3000" msid="107240898" hostid="261"></div><p>It's also noteworthy because, these days, so much of the back-and-forth between rappers happens on social media instead of in the studio. Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion's feud has hip-hop experts weighing in on who won 

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Wikipedia</span></p><p class="caption">Two of MakerBot's founders Zach Smith and Bre Prettis.</p></div><p></p></div></div>3D printing company MakerBot is laying off 20% of its staff for the second time in six months, CEO Jonathan Jaglom announced in a <a href="http://www.makerbot.com/blog/2015/10/08/makerbot-reorganizes-to-adapt-to-market-dynamics-and-prepare-for-the-future?siteID=TnL5HPStwNw-nsKbiOb85A1Cy50yAvH_zg&amp;ls_affid=TnL5HPStwNw">blog post.</a> The company let 80 staff go back in April, and now the team is at less than 400.</p><p>Jaglom writes that the company has struggled to meet "ambitious goals" thanks to the "broader challenges" in the industry.</p><p>Right now, according to Gartner's annual <a href="http://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/3114217" target="_blank">Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies</a> report, 3D printing has been out of the "hype" stage (when everyone gets really excited about a new technology) for the last two years. But it could be another <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/gartner-hype-cycle-report-shows-3d-printing-expanding-2015-8">five to 10 years</a> before the tech really takes off with consumers. So that means 3D printing is currently stuck in a "trough of disillusionment" - a stage right after the hype for a new technology reaches its peak and consumers begin to lose interest.</p><p>It's at this point that companies in the space typically either establish their permanence or fail.</p><p class="p1">Cofounder and former CEO Bre Pettis had previously talked ambitiously about the future of 3D printing. "People draw a lot of parallels between the personal computing industry and the personal manufacturing industry," Pettis told Business Insider back in 2012, "and there's a lot of similarities ... now, just like the Altair and the Apple 1 and the homebrew days of homebrew computing, you can now have a MakerBot ... The future's bright."</p><p>After the last round of layoffs the company pivoted to focus on <a href="http://qz.com/519975/the-only-3d-printing-company-anyones-heard-of-just-laid-off-a-huge-chunk-of-its-staff/">the education market</a>, and shut down its <a href="http://qz.com/401569/makerbot-has-found-its-audience-and-its-not-you-or-me/">three retail stores</a> in New York, Boston and Connecticut. Around 5,000 schools across the US now have MakerBot printers.</p><p>The company is also moving its research and development staff from a manufacturing complex in Brooklyn called Industry City to its headquarters at MetroTech in Downtown Brooklyn so the teams can work more efficiently together. But the MakerBot factory will remain in Industry City, Jaglom writes. He also hinted that the company would be outsourcing the production of the next generation of its printers.</p><p>Former MakerBot CEO Bre Prettis <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/makerbot-ceo-bre-pettis-steps-down-2014-9">stepped down</a> in September last year, and was initially replaced Jenny Lawton. But after a few months Jaglom took over. <p>Google's doing self-driving cars because they are safer than the current human-operated situation that claims an <a href="http://www.asirt.org/initiatives/informing-road-users/road-safety-facts/road-crash-statistics.aspx">average of 3,287 lives</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> every single day. This unfortunate statistic represents one of the most ready sources of donor organs we have access to today.</span></p>
<p>"We have this huge problem that we sort of don't talk about, that people die all the time from car accidents," said Bre Pettis, co-founder of 3-D printing company MakerBot, <a href="http://fortune.com/2014/08/15/if-driverless-cars-save-lives-where-will-we-get-organs/">told Fortune</a>. "It's kind of insane. But the most interesting thing is, if we can reduce accidents and deaths, then we actually have a whole other problem on our hands of, 'Where do we get organs?'"</p>
<p>Pettis has a solution, though. He thinks we will 3-D print organs to compensate for the drop in donations. "I don't think we'll actually be printing organs until we solve the self-driving car issue. The next problem will be organ replacement."</p>
<p>The reasoning goes that the more people we have in driverless cars, the fewer lethal accidents we'll have. If we cut down on accidents, fewer donor organs become available for those who might need new kidneys, hearts, lungs, or other body parts. Pettis is suggesting that it's only at this point that 3-D printing will become a viable means for manufacturing new organs from scratch.</p>
<p>He says that the problem of 3-D printing a functioning body part is as easy as squeezing "liver goo" into the shape of a liver, where the goo grows together to eventually yield a finished product. It's the <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> behind making the "liver goo" that represents the last hurdle to be overcome. The hardware for printing organs is already here, it's the chemical science behind making the goos that corresponds to various organs that needs to be investigated.</p>
<p>By normalizing the self-driving car, we stand to save some lives and set the scene to kick science up a notch as well. Having to find a new source of organs because people are traveling more safely is something we should call a "high quality problem."</p>

<p>Over the summer, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/makerbot-ceo-bre-pettis-on-acquisition-2013-6" target="_blank">3D printing company Stratasys acquired MakerBot</a>, the hot 3D printing <keyword id="138263" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="startup">startup</keyword>, in a $400 million deal. </p>
<p>"We're so proud to be doing this in Brooklyn," MakerBot CEO Bre Pettis said in June. "I don't think we could've done this any other place."</p>
<p>In Brooklyn's DUMBO area, there is a growing community of tech startups. The area, which stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, is <a href="http://map.brooklyntechtriangle.com/#">home to more than 500 tech companies</a>.  </p>

<p>Pettis believes that in the future, anyone with a creative bent will want to make custom objects at home, in the same way that printing things on paper in 2D became huge with home consumers in the 1980s and 1990s. "It used to be that you had to be a tycoon with a factory … now you just need an idea and the willingness to fail until it works."</p>
<p>The announcement came at CES, the giant consumer electronics show in Las Vegas.</p>
<p>The Mini is "a compact 3D printer for everyone, from beginners to professionals. This is our consumer 3D printer, for one-touch 3D printing," he said.</p>
<p>It is literally one-touch, too: "There is only one button." You simply load in your 3D design, and hit print.</p>
<p>The Mini comes with a built-in "connected" camera. When the model is done printing, it will send you an alert on your phone and users can share images on their social media accounts. It is app, wireless and cloud-enabled.</p>
<p>Pettis is particularly proud that the machine looks like a consumer gadget and not something sitting in a workshop. "It just looks good," he told attendees at CES. "The designers had their way, and the design didn't get messed up in the process."</p>
<p>The price: $1,375. Significantly, that's about the same price as a decent laptop. Previously, MakerBot's printers had cost more than $2,000. "There are no excuses. It's not, 'Are you going to get a MB 3D printer?' It's, 'Which MakerBot 3D printer are you going to get?'" Pettis said.</p>
<p>It will begin shipping in spring 2014.</p>

MakerBot Launches 'Mini' 3D Printer For Consumers For The Same Price As A Laptop

<p>The company is innovating in the consumer <keyword id="883288" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="3D-printing">3D printing</keyword> market and unveiled the new Replicator 2X<span> 3-D printer. </span></p>
<p><span>The Replicator 2X makes it even easier for casual users to manufacture right at home.</span></p>
<p><span><span>The new device is a dual extruding 3D printer, meaning you can now print in two colors, use dissolvable materials, have varying densities, and other uses that weren't possible before.</span></span></p>
<p>MakerBot wants to target a higher end audience with the Replicator 2X; it will retail for $2,799 and will be available later this month.</p>
<p>After the MakerBot took the wraps off the Replicator 2X, the crowd went wild for it. The company displayed several units printing at once. It was pretty impressive.</p>
<p>Besides the new uses, Pettis also used the press briefing as a way to plug his new book which details how to get started with 3D printing.</p>

Everyone Went Nuts Over MakerBot's New 3D Printer

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Courtesy of Perch</span></p><p class="caption">Lucy Lyle.</p></div><p></p></div></div>In the age of open offices and cookie-cutter Ikea desks, many employees feel they don't have the freedom to truly make their workspace their own.</p><p>Lucy Lyle was working in marketing strategy at Google when she came up with the idea to create <a href="https://www.perch.com/">Perch</a>, a design-focused office product company that officially launches Thursday. </p><p>"I just got tired of being subjected to bad workspace products," she told Business Insider. "Though the common areas at Google are more creatively designed, there was a lot of fluorescent lighting and white desks where we were spending most of our working time."</p><p>The company's product offerings span everything that you come into contact with during the work day, from mouse pads and staplers to the actual desk itself.</p><p>"I realized that beautiful, personal surroundings really affect the way you feel at work," she said. "Research shows that having a workplace that reflects your identity increases your productivity, but there was no go-to for everything you need to create a workspace you'll love working in." </p><p>With more Americans working remotely or choosing to go freelance, the idea of a traditional office is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/this-statistic-shows-why-the-office-might-be-obsolete-in-a-few-years-2016-9">on its way out</a>, and the modern worker will theoretically have a more flexible schedule and space. One of Perch's main goals is to appeal to individual tastes by offering some 400 unique items that are more design-oriented than the stuff you'll find at Staples.</p><p>Everything besides the mahogany desks - which Perch developed itself after working with engineers in Nicaragua - are sourced from makers the company has formed distribution partnerships with. The desks are being offered for between $750 and $1,250, depending on the size, but Lyle points out that a desk of similar quality and construction could cost up to $10,000 at a more traditional retailer. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Perch</span></p><p class="caption">The Harrison desk by Perch.</p></div><p></p></div></div>And as for the product focus, Lyle says that many people have asked her why she doesn't just launch a desk company.</p><p>"But where do you go to get a really beautiful stapler? We made sure that each product category had a range of prices and aesthetics." </p><p>Though this is Lyle's first foray into design and startups, she has an inherent understanding of the beauty in the details. Growing up in Tribeca with her mother, a painter, and her father, a chef, she worked as a personal shopper at Bergdorf Goodman when she was a teenager. </p><p>"This obsession with beautiful products is in my blood," she said. <p>Most people look at successful innovators, like Steve Jobs or Jeff Bezos, and think they were born with something extra special. It's true, they were. But everyone has it in them to be creative. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-steve-jobs-giving-the-best-advice-on-how-to-lead-a-happy-life-2013-5">Jobs said</a> the true secret to success is to realize that "Everything around you that you call 'life' was made up by people who were no smarter than you."</p>

<p>Innovative people tend to use some cutting-edge tech tools to do that, says Barry Jaruzelsk, a senior partner with Booz &amp; Company. He studied that topic as part of a massive <a href="http://www.booz.com/global/home/what-we-think/global-innovation-1000/top-innovators-spenders/52802974">Global Innovation 1000 study</a>. Jaruzelsk surveyed 400 executives at companies like Apple, Samsung, Google, Amazon, Tesla and found that the best of them used tools like these:</p>
<p>1.<strong> <keyword id="883288" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="3D-printing">3D printing</keyword>.</strong>  3-D printing allows teams to create quick prototypes, make changes and print another prototype, in as little as an hour.</p>
<p>2. <strong>Customer immersion labs</strong>. Some teams build detailed virtual worlds complete with a virtual mock up of the new product. They use that for customer feedback, almost like a video game experience. For instance, a tractor maker creates a virtual 3D mockup to get customer feedback before it builds a prototype.</p>
<p>3. <strong>Usage sensors. </strong>When it comes to software, it's easy for a developer to track what features a customer uses. All they have to do is track what users click on. These days, that same sort of instant feedback can be applied to any kind of product, thanks to low-powered sensors. Wire up the product and then record how a customer uses it.</p>

<p>These are paid internships open to undergraduate and graduate students. The program will enable participants to "attend special lectures and participate in programs on 3D printing within their area of expertise, as well as interact with senior leadership."</p>
<p>We caught up with Lisa Grant, MakerBot's Director of Recruiting, to learn more. She told us that if accepted applicants don't come from an especially crafty background, they will complete the program as full-blown "makers" for certain.</p>
<p>The program sounds tremendous. She explained that each intern will have a MakerBot employee serve as mentor to work on special projects with them. There will be a group outing ("most likely to the Barclay Center," says Grant). "We also want them to participate in MakerBot activities, like our employee reward program, movie night, and birthdays."</p>
<p>This sounds like quite the internship. Grant elaborated for us.</p>
<p><strong>BUSINESS INSIDER: How many interns will MakerBot hire and how long will an internship last?</strong></p>
<p><strong>LISA GRANT: </strong>Based on the needs of the participating departments, we at MakerBot are looking at bringing in about 25 interns this Summer. The internships runs from the end of May to mid-August.</p>
<p><strong>BI: Should potential interns have a maker background, or will they be okay to come at this without experience?</strong></p>
<p><strong>LG: </strong>A maker background is not required, although helpful especially for our research &amp; development and engineering areas. If an intern isn't a maker when they arrive, they will certainly be once they leave!</p>
<p><strong>BI: What else is MakerBot looking for in interns?</strong></p>
<p><strong>LG:</strong> In addition to the skill set for the particular position (engineering student, marketing student), we are looking for interns who possess a natural curiosity about the ins and outs of our products, our community, and our approach to making/engineering and who want to be part of the next industrial revolution.</p>
<p><strong>BG: What will they be doing each day?</strong></p>
<p><strong>LG:</strong> Interns will be treated like members of the MakerBot team they are on. For instance, engineering interns will assist the team in the development of new products, everything from organizing the lab, to designing, testing and improving upon our MakerBot Replicator 3D printers and MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D scanner.  Legal interns will assist in matters of intellectual property and patent law. Software interns will be involved in software development. Manufacturing Engineer interns will, among other things, design, prototype and finalize assembly tools and jigs. They will also be accountable and have goals to obtain just like any other MakerBot employee.</p>
<p><strong>BI: Will the internship program serve as something of an immediate hiring pool as the company grows?</strong></p>
<p><strong>LG:</strong> We have hired interns upon their graduation and definitely recognize the value of the program for MakerBot, as well as the interns.</p>
