Researchers from the <keyword id="22456634" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Botanical-Survey-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Botanical Survey of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Botanical Survey of India">Botanical Survey of India</keyword> (BSI) have discovered a <keyword id="22456632" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-plant-species" source="keywords">new plant species</keyword> from a wildlife sanctuary in <keyword id="19915575" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arunachal-Pradesh" source="keywords">Arunachal Pradesh</keyword>, officials said. '<keyword id="22456633" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Phlogacanthus-Sudhansusekharii" source="keywords">Phlogacanthus Sudhansusekharii</keyword>', the plant species recently discovered from <keyword id="19949553" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Itanagar" source="keywords">Itanagar</keyword> Wildlife Sanctuary in Papum Pare district, belongs to the family 'Acanthaceae' and the 'Phlogacanthus' genus, they said. The species is named to honor Dr Sudhansu Sekhar Dash, a scientist at the BSI, for his "significant contribution" to plant and ecological research in the Indian Himalayan region, the BSI officials said. The detailed research paper on the new species has been published by the authors Samrat Goswami and Rohan Maity in the Indian Journal of Forestry. The genus 'Phlogacanthus' comprises 13 species in India and is spread over mainly the northeastern and eastern Himalayan states, they said. "The newly described species is closely allied to Phlogacanthus Guttatus (Wall) Nees, but differ in various morphological characters, mainly in its shape and size of calyx, staminodes and strikingly different corona colour," a BSI official said. Chief Minister Pema Khandu has expressed delight over the development. "The biodiversity of Arunachal Pradesh is wide &amp; varied. In addition to the findings of new flora, researchers from @bsi_moefcc have identified a new plant species, named Phlogacanthus sudhansusekharii, in the Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary," Khandu said in a post in X. "This discovery reminds us of our rich natural heritage &amp; our responsibility to preserve it for future generations," he added. Over the past two decades, the rate of drug-induced liver injury from these supplements has nearly tripled, rising from 7 percent in 2004 to 20 percent by 2014. Among the botanical products associated with severe and sometimes fatal liver injury are turmeric, kratom, green tea extract, and Garcinia cambogia. Diagnosing liver injury can be challenging until it becomes severe, with symptoms such as fatigue, low appetite, and weight loss. In advanced cases, the liver's inability to process bilirubin leads to jaundice, characterised by a yellowing of the skin and eyes. Dr Cyriac Abby Philips, popularly known as <keyword id="17696323" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-liver-doc" source="Orion">The Liver Doc</keyword>, also took to his X handle to comment on this topic. He shared the experience he had with one of his patients, where the consumption of a BCAA supplement likely harmed their liver possibly because of ingredients like curcumin — known to have liver toxic properties. He called for doctors to check for the complete list of ingredients in the medicines and supplements they prescribe while being especially wary of modern medicine products with herbal components. Evidently, a glaring problem here is that the safety and efficacy of herbal and <keyword id="21293800" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dietary-supplements" source="keywords">dietary supplements</keyword> remain poorly established, primarily due to the lack of stringent regulatory requirements by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Unlike conventional medications, these supplements do not undergo rigorous human pharmacokinetic or prospective clinical trials before reaching the market. These users tend to be older, more educated, and have higher incomes compared to those who do not use these supplements. Many turn to turmeric-containing products for joint health or arthritis, driven by the belief in turmeric's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, multiple randomised clinical trials have shown no efficacy of turmeric-containing products in treating osteoarthritis. Similarly, despite widespread media attention, clinical research has found no significant impact of Garcinia cambogia on weight loss or green tea extract on overall health. A 2019 study using spectroscopic analysis further revealed discrepancies between the contents of these supplements and their labels, raising additional concerns about their safety. The safest approach to maintaining health is through a balanced diet that provides necessary nutrients. Supplements should only be used to address diagnosed deficiencies and under medical guidance. For those who choose to use herbal supplements, it is crucial to keep healthcare providers informed. Study links turmeric, Ashwagandha and green tea  ‘herbal supplements’ to liver damage

 <keyword id="2317650" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="environment-minister-Prakash-Javadekar">Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar</keyword> divulged these details in Rajya Sabha. 
 
Javadekar added that these new species will be important and open new avenues in the field of ecology. 
 
"There is also economic benefit for discovering new species, as each new organism may prove a valuable source of new medicines or food crops, or inspire new technology," said Javadekar.

 According to a survey carried out by research firm <keyword id="365383" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Euromonitor">Euromonitor</keyword>, says that over half of Indian consumers reported 'natural or organic' features influencing hair and skin care purchase decisions. 
 
71% of the consumers feel that a face cream or lotion will be chosen by them if it claims to be natural, 38% said that they would buy hair products if it had botanical ingredients. Religious aspects will be also be taken into consideration by 17%.&#xa0; 
 "Time-pressed consumers are seeking convenience in beauty and personal care routines and are aware of damaging effects of harsh chemicals. This has spurred demand for natural beauty and personal care products as a safer alternative. In a market like India where herbal and ayurvedic hair and skin care has a legacy of usage (for example, henna, bhringraj or brahmi oil, or herbal face packs), awareness and benefits of herbal or botanical ingredients are high," <keyword id="332696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Euromonitor-International">Euromonitor International</keyword> survey analyst <keyword id="3704149" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="priyanka-bagde">Priyanka Bagde</keyword> told ET. 
 
It has been confirmed by the executives at online stores and supermarkets that natural products rock the shelves. 
 "Consumers are looking for simplicity. Brands with too much complexity and claims hard to understand need to revisit their consumer proposition," said Devendra Chawla, president-food and FMCG, <keyword id="44949" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword>. 
 Looking at the trend, the cosmetic giant L’Oreal has rolled out an ayurvedic shampoo, conditioner and cream under its Garnier Ultra Blends brand, <keyword id="6365619" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hindustan-UniLever">Hindustan Unilever</keyword> relaunched Ayush and acquired hair oil brand Indulekha, while <keyword id="40233" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="emami">Emami</keyword> bought out Kesh King Hair oil. 
 "Millennial consumers are leading the trend - they are increasingly seeking the natural, untouched, un-made-up look from their beauty care products. As they become savvier about 'green' choices, we are seeing a marked shift in preferences in favour of natural products," Praveen Jaipuriar, marketing head-personal care of <keyword id="62997" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dabur">Dabur</keyword>, maker of <keyword id="4710578" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vatika">Vatika</keyword> shampoo and <keyword id="63066" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fem">Fem</keyword> bleach told ET. 
 The trend accelerated with <keyword id="6355107" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Baba-Ramdev">Baba Ramdev</keyword>’s <keyword id="6356684" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="patanjali">patanjali</keyword> Ayurved about an year ago. Other companies like Dabur and <keyword id="162901" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Himalya">Himalya</keyword>, traditionally had that natural tag. 
 
Euromonitor's Bagde added: "While herbal and ayurvedic companies like Dabur, Himalaya and Patanjali are promoting their natural and herbal products to encash this demand, other players are either extending their product lines to add natural features or are acquiring well-known ayurvedic brands to stay competitive."
