Directed by Abhishek Sharma of "<keyword id="2049842" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="parmanu" source="Orion">Parmanu</keyword>" and "Tere Bin Laden" fame, the action-adventure movie was released in theatres countrywide in October this year. 'Ram Setu' to make streaming debut on Prime Video on Dec 23

These events combine live streaming technology with interactive features that allows participants to engage with each other and creators.</li><li>Organisers are bringing music, elements of theatre such as dramatised readings, monologues, poetry recitals, stand-up comedy sessions and other performing art acts live to the safety of their viewer’s homes. </li></ul>Extreme times have pushed every industry to come up with creative solutions to sustain their businesses. When it was announced that IPL was indefinitely postponed, ticketing platforms were one of the first ones to be hit badly. The second blow came when the lockdown 1.0 was announced in India and outdoor entertainment came to a complete standstill. As per Event and Entertainment Management Association (EEMA), the Indian events and exhibition sector is expected to take a ₹1 trillion hit this quarter. Ergo, there is a rising demand for these events on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Facebook. We did a theatrical show where people watching it decided how the story went.” While the established artists have found a way to connect with their audience via technology, smaller artists in Tier II and III are struggling. However, Abbas says that this new normal will never be the same for the events industry. This period has pushed consumers to reconsider their habits. “The new normal will not be the same as what we were used to. Many of us will choose efficiency over entertainment. So do you really want to go to a seminar? Or do you want to go for dinner in the evening? Do you want to go for the awards show at all? Or are you happy to be with us here? Awards have anyway become a television spectacle because people stopped going. So the consumers will start making even more informed choices. And again, this is where people who will build transmedia properties that go from online to offline, offline to online, to build communities both offline and online will succeed,” said Abbas.

The stock of the country's most valued firm in terms of market valuation ended at Rs 2,924.75, up 0.54 per cent on the BSE. During the day, it climbed 1.68 per cent to Rs 2,958. Shares of the company ended with a gain of 0.66 per cent at Rs 2,930.75 on the NSE. During the day, it went up by 1.60 per cent to Rs 2,957.95. The company's market valuation stood at Rs 19,78,794.25 crore. In the broader equity market, the 30-share BSE benchmark climbed 195.42 points or 0.27 per cent to settle at 72,500.30, and the Nifty went up by 31.65 points or 0.14 per cent to 21,982.80. Under the deal, coming just over a month after the failed USD 10 billion merger of rivals <keyword id="19976119" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zee" source="keywords">Zee</keyword> and <keyword id="19914172" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sony" source="keywords">Sony</keyword>, Reliance and its affiliates will hold 63.16 per cent in the combined entity that will house two streaming services and 120 television channels. Disney will hold the remaining 36.84 per cent, the companies said in a statement on Wednesday. Reliance has also agreed to invest at closing Rs 11,500 crore into the joint venture to give it the muscle to fight rivals such as Japan's Sony and Netflix. Media ventures of Reliance are housed in Network 18, which owns TV18 news channels as well as a plethora of entertainment (under the 'Colors' brand) and sports channels. NW18 also has stakes in moneycontrol.com, bookmyshow and publishes magazines. Its subsidiary NW18 owns news channels CNBC/CNNNews. Reliance separately owns a movie production arm - JioStudios, and majority stakes in two listed cable distribution companies, Den and <keyword id="20777796" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hathway" source="keywords">Hathway</keyword>.

RIL shares climb nearly 1% after announcing mega merger

New Delhi, Walt <keyword id="19899232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="disney" source="keywords">Disney</keyword> CEO <keyword id="20023956" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bob-iger" source="keywords">Bob Iger</keyword> has said a joint venture with <keyword id="19936674" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance" source="keywords">Reliance</keyword> Industries after merging its <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> business would benefit the company in terms of profit and also "derisk" its business in the Indian market. The merger deal will create a big entity and help it to stay in the market at a "significant level", said Iger at a Morgan Stanley investor conference earlier this week. "We had an opportunity to align with Reliance, which is obviously the company that has done very well there and one that we respect. And in doing so, end up owning part of a bigger media company. And we believe that, that not only should benefit us in terms of the bottom-line, but derisk us as well there," he said. Last month, Walt Disney Co. and Reliance Industries announced signing of binding pacts to merge their media operations in India. Under the deal, Reliance and its affiliates will hold 63.16 per cent and Disney will have 36.84 per cent in the JV, which will create India's leading media company that will house two streaming services and around 120 television channels. "We wanted to stay in India. We made a big investment in India when we purchased the assets of 21st Century Fox. We are one of the biggest media companies in India. But even though it is the most populous country in the world, we felt we want to be there because of that, we also know that there are challenges in that market," he said. Iger said, the merger will create a big entity and help it to stay in the market at a "significant level". "So, it's kind of the best of both worlds. We stay in the market at a significant level. We have a very good partner in Reliance, and we get to have a chance of growing a business and lowering the risk of doing so," he added. The transaction values the joint venture at Rs 70,352 crore (USD 8.5 billion) on a post-money basis, excluding synergies. Billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance has also agreed to invest at closing Rs 11,500 crore into the joint venture to give it the muscle to fight rivals such as Japan's Sony, and Netflix. Its OTT platform Disney + Hotstar has seen its paid subscriber base decline from around 55 million to 40 million in the first quarter of FY24 because of Reliance's <keyword id="19985346" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-cinema" source="keywords">Jio Cinema</keyword> winning exclusive rights for live sports. The combined entity will have the largest OTT subscriber base. Disney + Hotstar was launched in India in 2020, post the acquisition of the entertainment assets of 21st Century Fox at a valuation of USD 71.3 billion, thereby taking over the operations of Star India and Hotstar. It housed entertainment and cinema channels such as StarPlus and StarGold as well as sports channels like Star Sports. While Disney + Hotstar rapidly increased its subscriber base initially with the streaming rights of cricket matches (IPL, World Cup), it lost the bid for the digital streaming rights in 2023-27 cycle, which was won by Reliance-backed Viacom18 for USD 720 billion, 12.92 per cent higher than what Star India had paid on an average per match value. Merger with Reliance would boost company's profits and reduce risk in India: Disney CEO Bob Iger

New Delhi, <keyword id="19903774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paramount" source="keywords">Paramount</keyword> Global has agreed to sell its 13 per cent stake in its Indian TV business to <keyword id="19936674" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance" source="keywords">Reliance</keyword> Industries for Rs 4,286 crore, the Indian firm said on Thursday. In a stock exchange filing, Reliance said it has signed a binding agreement with two subsidiaries of Paramount Global to acquire 13.01 per cent equity stake of Viacom 18 Media Private Limited held by Paramount Global. Similarly, in a filing on the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Paramount Global said the closing of the transaction is subject to the satisfaction of certain customary conditions, including receipt of applicable regulatory approvals, as well as the completion of a previously announced joint venture involving Reliance, Viacom18 and Star Disney. "After the closing, Paramount will continue to license its content to Viacom18," it added. In its stock exchange filing, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) said Viacom18 is a material subsidiary of TV18 Broadcast Ltd. The company currently holds compulsorily convertible preference shares of Viacom18 representing 57.48 per cent equity stake on a fully diluted basis. Post the completion of this transaction, the company's equity stake in Viacom18 will increase to 70.49 per cent on a fully diluted basis. Earlier in February, Walt Disney Co and Reliance Industries had announced the signing of binding pacts to merge their media operations in India to create a Rs 70,000 crore behemoth. Under the deal, that came just over a month after the failed USD 10 billion merger of rivals Zee and Sony, Reliance and its affiliates will hold 63.16 per cent in the combined entity that will house two streaming services and 120 television channels. Disney will hold the remaining 36.84 per cent, the companies had said. As part of the transaction, the media undertaking of Viacom18 would be merged into Star India Pvt Ltd (SIPL) through a court-approved scheme of arrangement. Reliance had also agreed to invest at closing Rs 11,500 crore into the joint venture to give it the muscle to fight rivals such as Japan's Sony and Netflix. The combined entity will have the largest OTT subscriber base. Media ventures of Reliance are currently housed in Network 18, which owns TV18 news channels as well as a plethora of entertainment (under the 'Colors' brand) and sports channels. NW18 also has stakes in moneycontrol.com, bookmyshow and publishes magazines. Its subsidiary NW18 owns the news channels CNBC/CNNNews. In 2014, RIL had acquired majority stake in media group Network18 from its erstwhile promoters, including its founder <keyword id="20951924" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="raghav-bahl" source="keywords">Raghav Bahl</keyword>, for Rs 4,000 crore. Prior to this in 2007, TV18, a part of Newtwork18 group, had formed a joint venture with Viacom targetting hindi general entertainment category. Reliance separately owns a movie production arm - JioStudios, and majority stakes in two listed cable distribution companies, Den and Hathway. The JV between Walt Disney and RIL will be headed by <keyword id="20054466" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nita-ambani" source="keywords">Nita Ambani</keyword>, wife of billionaire and Reliance chairman <keyword id="19916798" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mukesh-ambani" source="keywords">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>, while <keyword id="20331446" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uday-shankar" source="keywords">Uday Shankar</keyword> will be the vice chairperson. Shankar is a former top Disney executive and has a joint venture with James Murdoch, called Bodhi Tree. The transaction had valued the joint venture at Rs 70,352 crore (USD 8.5 billion) on a post-money basis, excluding synergies. The JV will be one of the leading TV and digital streaming platforms for entertainment and sports content in India, bringing together iconic media assets across entertainment (e.g. Colors, StarPlus, StarGOLD) and sports (e.g. Star Sports and Sports18) including access to highly anticipated events across television and digital platforms through JioCinema and Hotstar. The JV will have over 750 million viewers across India and will also cater to the Indian diaspora across the world. It will also be granted exclusive rights to distribute Disney films and productions in India, with a licence to more than 30,000 Disney content assets, providing a full suite of entertainment options for the Indian consumer. The Disney Reliance media merger deal was in contrast to the failed plans of rivals Sony and Zee last month. This merger which could have created a USD 10.5 billion entity, was called off by Sony Group and both sides are mired in litigations and arbitrations.

Paramount Global to sell 13% stake in Indian TV business to Reliance Industries for ₹4,286 cr

With crackers and confetti, dancing and drumbeats, and whistles galore, Shah Rukh Khan's "<keyword id="6363925" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="jawan" source="Orion">Jawan</keyword>" got off to an exuberant start on Thursday morning with audiences streaming into theatres across the country - all the way from Srinagar to Chennai. The pan-India thriller in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu is directed by South filmmaker Atlee and if scenes inside and outside theatres in cities such as Jaipur, Jammu, Mumbai and Kolkata are any indication, Shah Rukh's second film after "Pathaan" may have hit an early winning streak. Ahead of the film's release, #BoycottJawan trended on social media for a while with some users calling for the film's boycott because it is distributed by Red Giant Movies in Tamil Nadu. The company is owned by Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, who has courted massive controversy for his comments against Sanatan Dharma. <keyword id="6359862" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="srk" source="Orion">SRK</keyword>'s fans on X hit out at the actor's detractors, saying the film will beat their negative campaign to become a blockbuster. The controversy, however, didn't appear to gather much momentum. Theatres in several cities went ahead with their plans for early morning shows to maximise on the excitement and Janmashtami, a holiday in many parts of the country. In Kolkata, for instance, the first show was at 5 am. And in Jaipur at 6 am. Outside south Kolkata's Asoka theatre, fans raised slogans in support of Shah Rukh and decorated the film's giant poster with garlands. They also struck SRK's famous open arm pose for the cameras. Some fans even brought posters of the actor and arranged marigold petals to form their message, "Love SRK". One fan performed a 'puja' at the theatre, putting a 'tilak' on the star's face on the poster. "This movie will perform even better than 'Pathaan'," said one fan. "I didn't sleep last night," added another. In Jaipur, some eager viewers turned up at a theatre in white T-shirts with the poster of "Jawan" printed on them. They played the song "Zinda Banda" on their speakers and danced to their hearts content. "It is a 'paisa vasool' movie. It is a total entertainer and has everything we want from a SRK movie -- drama, emotions and action." Another fan, Musharaf, said audiences will not feel that they have "wasted" their time on the film. In Srinagar, too, some eager morning viewers, dressed in "Jawan" T-shirts, spoke of their excitement. In Noida's Waves theatre, the audience erupted in whistles and cheers every time Shah Rukh made an appearance. The many pan-India scenes were a throwback to a pre-OTT era and evidence that mainstream cinema is alive and thriving with a string of successes, including "Pathaan" and "Gadar 2" and now perhaps "Jawan". In Mumbai, fans queued up in large numbers at the Gaiety Galaxy in Bandra and were seen frantically dancing to drum beats inside a theatre, recalling celebrations seen during festive season. Fans were also seen forming a human pyramid outside a theatre at a 6 am show. There were similar scenes inside a cinema hall in Chennai where fans broke into whistles as the film unspooled in front of them. At Bengaluru's Urvashi Cinema, a huge gathering was seen for the first show of the film. A young woman, who came to watch with her friend, told PTI, "We are very excited. We came here to dance on the movie. I'm a very big Shah Rukh Khan fan, I love him." And in Hyderabad, hundreds of SRK fans gathered at the Devi Theatre, placed large cutouts of the superstar, threw confetti and danced their hearts out before the first show early on Thursday. Many donned SRK's looks from the movie. At Liberty cinema in Delhi's Karol Bagh, some clicked selfies against the film's with its poster. The scene at the single theatre was akin to that of Holi celebrations with many fans donning white and playing with colours as they danced to the film's track outside the theatre. There were also many videos posted on X showing fans dancing near the giant screen when the song "Zinda Banda" came on. "Jawan" is described by makers as a high-octane thriller outlining "the emotional journey of a man who is set to rectify the wrongs in the society". It also stars <keyword id="6354625" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vijay-sethupathi" source="Orion">Vijay Sethupathi</keyword> and <keyword id="16829" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nayanthara" source="Orion">Nayanthara</keyword>. Trade predictions Trade experts are betting big on "Jawan" as they believe the movie will outperform "Pathaan", which had the reported earnings of Rs 1,050 crore. They pegged the opening day figure to be somewhere around Rs 65-70 crore. The film already got a thumbs up from fans as over 7.5 lakh tickets were booked in advance on online ticket booking platform BookMyShow by Tuesday evening. The movie is headed to beat the opening-day figure of Rs 57 crore notched up by 'Pathaan' and touch Rs 70 crore, according to the trade media. Across languages, 'Jawan' is likely to cross Rs 104 crore with Rs 20 crore from the Tamil markets and another Rs 14 crore from the Telugu-speaking universe. It will be interesting to see how much the film collects from the global Tamil audience, which has powered the huge success of Rajanikanth's 'Jailer'. The optimism of the trade media is hinged on the unprecedented advance bookings for 'Jawan'. According to BoxOfficeIndia.com, the figure for these bookings adds up to Rs 55 crore for the weekend, slightly more than what 'Pathaan' made, namely, Rs 54 crore. SRK, therefore, now holds the record of attracting two Rs 25 crore-plus advance bookings in one year. The three major multiplex chains in the country -- PVR, Inox and Cinepolis -- had reported they sold 2.35 million advance tickets within the first three days of the bookings being opened. Yet, there is a lot more evolution that’s to take place in this segment going ahead, say experts. In 2023, apart from continuing with the growth story in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, online shopping will also go deeper – which still has a lot of juice left. “Growth is expected to be led by new online shoppers - primarily from Tier 2/3 cities - and continued online migration of key categories including fashion and grocery. In fashion, 'social' commerce and direct- to-consumer brands are gaining share,” according to a Bernstein study. The mix has increased over the past 5-7 years – when e-commerce was largely concentrated in metro/Tier1 cities – to today, when Tier 2+ customers account for over 50% of the online shopper base, reveals Bernstein. The mix might continue to change with a bias towards non-metro shoppers. Localisation through the use of vernacular and visual content will be the key to win over customers in Bharat,” Meesho told Business Insider India. Quick e-commerce and D2C business to fly In urban areas especially consumers have become a tad more demanding, especially when it comes to the delivery of essentials. “Within grocery, we're already seeing a shift from slow e-Com to 'quick'/ instant delivery,” said the Bernstein study. That means quick commerce players like Blinkit, Zomato, <keyword id="9731725" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="swiggy-instamart" source="Orion">Swiggy Instamart</keyword> and Dunzo are expected to see growth in the coming year. The trend of ordering groceries online has survived the pandemic-time need for essentials while stuck inside. In fact, the lightning-fast speed of the service has caught the fancy of users who now call the non-quick versions as slow e-Com. “The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted purchase decisions, and most users started moving to e-Commerce and quick commerce for their purchases. “Out of stock” - Those three little words have the power to kill e-commerce. In fact, 52% of online shoppers will abandon all items in their carts upon learning that just one item they are attempting to purchase is not in stock,” said Ajoy <keyword id="6356986" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="thomas" source="Orion">Thomas</keyword>, vice president, TeamLease Services. That's what we're going with virtual and hence it's a fairly logical progression.” Before Watcho, Dish TV had launched another online platform called Dish Online to provide live TV shows to its customers on mobile phones. The idea was to provide its customers with an option of watching while on the move or before going to bed. Watcho, on the other hand, is a 360-showcase platform. “Watcho is a very different product, which is aimed at providing primarily good short-form exclusive content to our customers, along with various other options to engage including User Generated Content and apart from that, there is reasonably a go-to the library of other content which is also available, along with more than 100 TV channels. So, Watcho is a very comprehensive platform, which aims to serve all our customers, whatever they prefer to watch. It is watching TV, it could be reading other exclusive entertainment, it could also be uploading their creative videos. So, that's how we kind of progress from your early DTH to providing TV content on the move through Dish online to now having a comprehensive platform, which is across our connected boxes in-home, as well as on mobile,” explained Singh. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Standing out in a cluttered space" text="Standing out in a cluttered space">Standing out in a cluttered space </cmsannotation> While the lockdown proved to be a blessing in disguise for OTT platforms, Singh believes that Watcho would have grown at the same trajectory despite that. Sharing a few factors that helped Watcho stand out, Singh said, “I don't think the growth of what you can do can be attributed to the fact that there was kind of a lockdown, it is more than that. We are different from a regular OTT platform in the sense that we are catering to our consumer base. So, these are people who have already subscribed to the Dish TV, D2H. And then it is also open to other people who are not all subscribers. For our user base, it is a value add. The penetration within our user base is not complete but from here on, we want all our subscribers to regularly consume content on Watcho.” However, it would be a challenge to retain these subscribers and get them to spend more time on the app than on a Netflix or Amazon Prime. So, to stand out, Singh has a four step plan. “One, of course, is to keep on providing good content. Second, is that we are reaching out to a very, sharply defined audience, which is young people and millennials in Tier II, Tier III cities, which is an untapped audience in a way. The kind of content that we have, which is on the shortest form content and we provide people an opportunity to showcase their talent. That is another way that we keep on acquiring new users. And with buyers and alliances, so we have a lot of ASM alliances in the pipeline. So, these are all the pillars: Dish TV’s user base, user base to user-generated content, user base to our exclusive content partners,” shared Singh. Some of the most popular content pieces on Watcho are its short-form stories Jaalsaazi, Sarhad, The jail planand, and It is my pleasure. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Vision for 2021" text="Vision for 2021">Vision for 2021</cmsannotation> Singh’s aim for 2021 is to get Dish TV’s loyal subscribers onto Watcho and add more languages. “Our current platforms like Dish TV and D2H, which now cater to more than 20 million-plus households and multiply that with the number of families, the average family size that it sells could be around 80 Million to 100 Million -- that’s the first addressable universe that we have. so it could be anywhere within that range, depends on how we expand. So far, we have a record number (15 million), we should be adding a few million per month. Apart from that, I think the focus has to be on providing inspirational content and expanding regional languages,” signed off Singh.

<keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword> recently launched its new travel and movie ticketing business and the mobile wallet firm has high hopes regarding these new segments. The company, in order to become a $100-billion internet conglomerate, is hoping to get its next billion dollar revenues. For this, the Paytm will be coming face to face with some big players which are already present in the segment. 
 
In terms of annualised revenue, Paytm’s phone recharge, utility bill payment and online retail arms are already billion-dollar businesses. The company is now hoping that its new segments to do well in the market. 
 
Meanwhile, Paytm is also pushing its online-to-online (O2O) business-which accounts for 20% of its business, so it can achieve $1 billion in annualised revenue by incentivising users to pay at fuel stations and corner stores via its digital wallet. 
 "The best thing that we can do is capture as many markets, and the dumbest thing we could do is spread ourselves too thin," founder <keyword id="198636" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vijay-Shekhar-Sharma">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword> told ET. 
 
The phone recharge unit accounts for another 20% and the online marketplace, 40%. Remaining sales come through Paytm's tie-ups with large third-party merchants, including Uber and rail-ticketing platform IRCTC. 
 In the travel business, Paytm is up against travel website-MakeMyTrip, which is all set to consolidate its market-leader position with the acquisition of its closest rival <keyword id="984795" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="goibibo">Goibibo</keyword> for an estimated $1.8-2 billion in October. Paytm, however, believes that it will soon be closing the gap by selling nearly 1-million tickets in October as against MakeMyTrip's 1.2 million monthly transactions in the July-September quarter.As for movie ticketing, Paytm said it had sold 6.5-million tickets since the launch of the business in March, with 30% month-onmonth growth. India's No.1 movie-ticketing company, Book-MyShow, is leagues ahead, having sold more than 52-million tickets in the first six months of this year. 
 Paytm is looking forward to woo customers with attractive cashback schemes to acquire customers, replicating <keyword id="302749" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alibaba">Alibaba</keyword> and its payments affiliate Alipay. 
 The new businesses are part of an integrated financial-technology play for Paytm and will not be standalone units, said <keyword id="80658" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anil-Kumar">Anil Kumar</keyword>, CEO of research firm <keyword id="3359665" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="RedSeer">RedSeer</keyword>. 
 
"This is not to get into new revenue streams but to create a holistic ecosystem for themselves. Travel booking is already hyper-competitive, but by being part of these transactions they are able to get a good grip on the whole online payments ecosystem," Kumar told ET.
