In the rankings, released in London recently, IIT Bombay was evaluated as India's top higher education institution for its excellence in employability, social concern, and environment. IIT Bombay was featured in the 281-300 rank range, followed by IIT Delhi (321-340 rank) and <keyword id="58265" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jawaharlal-nehru-university" source="Orion">Jawaharlal Nehru University</keyword> (JNU) at the third rank (361-380). Apart from this, IIT Bombay was also included in the world's top 100 institutes based on the employability of its graduates. QS Rankings: IIT Bombay best in employability, IIT Delhi ranks second

With technology giant <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> bracing to hire talent from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay this year, this placement season is expected to be better for students compared to last year. The institute had seen a slump in the number of offers in the first phase of the placements last year. Owing to a tough market scenario in e-commerce coupled with the <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>-IIM row, fewer startups had visited the institutes during campus placement. Flipkart had stayed off campuses. <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> had resorted to an internal process of hiring candidates than going to the IITs. PSUs and FMCG companies were in great demand. Apple however has now confirmed its presence at the Powai campus in the 2017 placement season. The company has already floated its application forms for interested graduates. According to sources, the tech giant is offering positions for coding profile and most computer science students and some enthusiasts from other streams have signed up for the test. The preliminary short-listing exam would be held before the semester exams take place in the last week of November. Placements kickstart on December 1. “We are seeing an emerging trend with new companies showing interest in placements. We have received confirmation from a few of them,” Tom Mathew, Professor in Charge of Placements, at IIT-Bombay said. While the other IITs meanwhile wait to hear from Apple on whether it will be hiring from the other campuses this year, start-ups that were blacklisted from placements last year (after the Flipkart-IIM Ahmedabad tussle) will be allowed to return to campuses this year. Institutes are also waiting for confirmation of participation by Public Sector Undertakings. Last year, PSUs had come in early for placements by replacing start-ups in the early slots. “We are yet to find out if PSUs want the early slots as they are yet to confirm their dates. Invitations have been sent,” said Mathew. Even as Apple has not confirmed its participation in any other campus apart from IIT Bombay as of now, most colleges are seeking clarity in the next two days, without which they say that they may have to turn down Apple's request.

Why this placement season could turn out to be great for IIT Bombay freshers

<keyword id="2934282" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gujarat-Food-and-Drug-Control-Authority">Gujarat Food and Drug Control Authority</keyword> (FDCA) on Monday said it removed the ban on the sale of <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> India’s ‘<keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword>’ noodles after the <keyword id="48485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bombay-high-court">Bombay High Court</keyword> lifted the nationwide ban on it in August. 

	“FDCA had lifted the ban on Maggi in Gujarat after the Bombay High Court passed an order to lift the ban across India. We took the decision based on the court order,” Gujarat FDCA Commissioner H G Koshia said. 
 The <keyword id="6370685" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gujarat-Government">Gujarat government</keyword> had banned the sale of Maggi for a month in June this year after the lead and monosodium glutamate levels in the noodles were found to be above the prescribed limits. Later, the ban was subsequently extended till September. However, the Gujarat FDCA revoked the ban mid-way in August following court order. On August 13, the Bombay High Court had lifted the nationwide ban imposed by Indian food regulators on Maggi noodles, and asked its manufacturer Nestle India Pvt Ltd to go for a fresh test of samples in three independent laboratories across India. 

	But Maggi is still not available in Gujarat markets, as the company is following court order to get its samples tested from three approved laboratories. The state government had in the first week of June banned Maggi sale in the state after the product failed the food safety test. The government had also asked the company to withdraw all its stock of Maggi from the state. 
 

	At that time, the government claimed that all 27 samples collected from different parts of the state had failed the tests, as lead content was found above the prescribed limit in 14 samples while monosodium glutamate, which should not be there at all, was found in all the samples. 
 

	Nestle India had on Friday said that all samples of Maggi have cleared tests conducted by three laboratories, as mandated by Bombay High Court, paving the way for the instant noodles brand to be back in the market after it was banned over the presence of excess lead. The company said it will now commence manufacturing and will sell “only after the newly manufactured products are also cleared by the designated three laboratories”.

Gujarat government lifts ban on sale of Maggi noodles on Bombay HC's order

The 11th edition of E-Summit - a two-day national event held at IIT-Bombay, came to a close with a bang.

The <keyword id="48485" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bombay-high-court" source="Orion">Bombay High Court</keyword> on Thursday refused relief to actor <keyword id="6357860" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="anushka-sharma" source="Orion">Anushka Sharma</keyword> and disposed of her petitions challenging orders passed by the state Sales Tax department demanding tax for assessment years between 2012 to 2016 under the <keyword id="16042124" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="maharashtra-value-added-tax-act" source="Orion">Maharashtra Value Added Tax Act</keyword>. A division bench of <keyword id="9774337" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="justices-nitin-jamdar" source="Orion">Justices Nitin Jamdar</keyword> and <keyword id="9265938" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="abhay-ahuja" source="Orion">Abhay Ahuja</keyword> said the actor had the alternate remedy of filing appeal against the orders under provisions of <keyword id="601688" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="maharashtra-value-added-tax" source="Orion">Maharashtra Value Added Tax</keyword> (MVAT) Act. <keyword id="445" type="General" weightage="90" keywordseo="sharma" source="Orion">Sharma</keyword> had filed four petitions challenging four orders passed by the Sales Tax department levying tax for assessment years 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 under the Act. "Why should we entertain the petitions when the petitioner (Sharma) has a full fledged remedy of appeal available under the Act? Statutory provision is available," the bench said. The court, while disposing of Sharma's petitions, directed her to file appeal before the Deputy Commissioner of Sales Tax (Appeals) within a period of four weeks. Under the Act, when a person files appeal, he or she will have to deposit 10 per cent of the tax amount levied by the department. As per the Sales Tax department, Sharma was the "first owner of copyrights" on her performances at awards functions or stage shows, and, therefore, liable to pay sales tax when she received income from them. As she "transferred" this <keyword id="15456337" type="TOPIC" weightage="60" keywordseo="Copyright" source="TOPIC" sourcekeytype="business,investopedia" meta.keywordsubtype="null" meta.msid="92982198" meta.seopath="c/copyright" meta.entityname="Copyright" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="copyright">copyright</keyword> to the producers of such events for a fee, it was akin to a sale, the Sales Tax department contended. Sharma's contention is an actor who performs in a film, advertisement or a stage/TV show cannot be called a creator or producer, and, hence, she or he does not own a copyright on the same. The court said all the issues raised by Sharma in her petitions can be decided by the appellate authority. "The authority will go into all the issues and conduct a detailed inquiry. If we sit to decide this, then every <keyword id="16987535" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mvat-act" source="Orion">MVAT Act</keyword> matter will come here," the court said. The department had sought for the petitions to be dismissed and cost be imposed on Sharma as she had an alternate remedy available under the MVAT Act. According to Sharma's petitions, during the concerned period she performed in films and at award ceremonies as part of a tri-party agreement with her agent <keyword id="15841112" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="yashraj-films-pvt-ltd" source="Orion">Yashraj Films Pvt Ltd</keyword> and producers/event organisers. The assessing officer levied sales tax not on film consideration but on product endorsements and anchoring at award functions, holding that Sharma had transferred her performer's rights, her petitions said. For Assessment Year 2012-13, the sales tax demand, inclusive of interest, was Rs 1.2 crore on Rs 12.3 crore consideration and for 2013-14, it was Rs 1.6 crore on a consideration of Rs 17 crore. The sales tax department passed the orders between 2021 and 2022. Sharma is known for her roles in films like "PK", "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi", "Sultan" and "Zero", among others.
