<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="1135312" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bolthouse-Farms">Bolthouse Farms</keyword> is paying full-time hourly workers a $500 <keyword id="50592" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bonus">bonus</keyword> to get the <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> <keyword id="24209" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="vaccine">vaccine</keyword>.</li><li>So far, 1,100 California employees out of 1,800 have signed up for the shot.</li><li>Before the $500 bonus, Bolthouse paid staff an extra $100 for being essential workers during the <keyword id="43587" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="pandemic">pandemic</keyword>.</li></ul><p>Jeff Dunn, CEO of Bolthouse Farms, is offering his full-time hourly employees $500 to get a COVID-19 vaccine, the <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/one-ceo-dangles-500-bonus-for-workers-to-get-covid-19-vaccinations-11616342400?mod=pls_whats_news_us_business_f">Wall Street Journal first reported</a> Sunday.</p><p>Bolthouse employees must submit a photo of their vaccination cards to the company after they've had their shot to receive the bonus, the Journal reported.</p><p>The California-based company, known for its smoothies and dressings, has poured tens of millions of dollars into COVID-19 safety measures, including testing, protective clothing, paid time off, and staff cover for anybody who is self-isolating, Dunn told the Journal.</p><p>Bolthouse also hosts vaccine events weekly at its main plant in Kern County to deliver shots on-site, Dunn said. </p><p>Dunn said his philosophy was to "go bigger now because it gives us the best chance at reaching <keyword id="2147226" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="herd-immunity">herd immunity</keyword> quickly." </p><p>Before the $500 incentive for a COVID-19 shot, Bolthouse paid its full-time hourly workers an extra $100 every week for their role as essential workers during the pandemic. This stopped once the vaccine bonus was introduced, Dunn said.</p><p>Workers at Bolthouse are a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/frontline-essential-workers-people-75-and-older-priority-cdc-vaccines-2020-12">priority group for getting shots</a> because it is a food and agriculture company, and it has secured shots for all its California essential workers, Dunn said.</p><p>The company has about 1,800 hourly workers at its Kern County plant, and 1,100 have signed up for the vaccine, the Journal reported. So far, 475 employees have received at least one shot.</p><p>The company also employs about 300 office workers in the area.</p><h2>Bolthouse hopes to reach "herd immunity"</h2><p>The company estimates that between 1,300 and 1,400 workers at the plant need to be vaccinated to reach "herd immunity," which is when immunity in a population, either through vaccination or infection, stops a virus spreading and gives protection to the group.</p><p>Company executives told the Journal that it was difficult to know when Bolthouse would reach herd immunity because vaccine supply - and vaccine hesitancy amongst employees - was always fluctuating.</p><p>Dunn said the company was expecting a certain level of reluctance, because about 80% of its workforce is Latino. Some polls have suggested that Latino people are more likely to be <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-vaccine-safe-people-of-color-facts-vs-misinformation-2021-1">hesitant about getting vaccines</a>, because of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-racial-gap-in-coronavirus-deaths-is-driven-by-racism-2020-6">skepticism</a> and mistrust of the US health system, triggered by <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2593958/">historical injustices</a>.</p><p>Bolthouse started teaching staff about COVID-19 in tents in its plant parking lot before it offered the vaccine on-site, Dunn said.</p><p>"You just gotta reach out and help people and understand their concerns," he said. He hoped that there would be a chain reaction once employees start seeing colleagues get immunized safely at work, he added.</p><p>Dunn also told staff that some aspects of work would be easier if herd immunity is reached on the plant, the Journal reported.</p>

In 2016, the University of California, Berkeley, grads quit their jobs and went all-in on dairy-free ice cream to launch <a href="https://www.hakunabrands.com/">Hakuna Brands</a>. </p><p>"We both agreed that the minute our business gets in the way of our friendship and there's any sort of resentment or any negative feeling where we feel like we can't be on this with each other, the business is over," Hong said.</p><p>She and Cha have disagreements and different points of view, but Hong said they always come to an understanding. "It's just like a marriage, you know, you can fight but you can still be married," Hong said. </p><p>Now, the pair has an exciting new opportunity to agree upon: how to invest $100,000 for their business. </p><p>On November 4, Padma Lakshmi, host of "Top Chef," awarded Hakuna Brands the grand prize for <a href="https://stacysrise.helloalice.com/">Stacy's Rise Project</a>, a funding and mentorship program designed to help close the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biggest-struggles-for-women-small-business-owners-2019-10">funding gap</a> for<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/women-owned-business-month-october-tips-strategies"> women business owners</a>.</p><p>Hakuna sells vegan ice cream made with oat milk and bananas, making a beloved dessert easier on lactose-intolerant stomachs - and a lighter option for any ice cream lover. The brand is capitalizing on major food trends like the paleo diet and the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oat-milk-is-in-coffee-shops-everywhere-heres-why-2018-4">recent explosion of oat milk</a>. </p><p>Hakuna's banana ice creams come in six flavors and three frozen bars, including cashew cookie dough, banilla, and strawberry. The oat-milk based ice creams, which launched in early 2019, come in peanut butter, vanilla, and chocolate. </p><p>Business Insider spoke with Hong after her win. She was proud to be wearing a pink, banana-covered t-shirt as she posed for press photos with Lakshmi and a giant check. "I know it's not the coolest thing to wear in front of Padma, but I'm not giving up the opportunity to wear my branded t-shirt in this photo," said Hong. </p><p>She'll do whatever it takes to advance her business. "This is my first born, this is my baby, and there is nothing I won't do for it," Hong said. </p><p>Hakuna Brands is based in Los Angeles and led by four women - three of whom were former colleagues at Bolthouse Farms, a producer of green smoothies and carrot juice. Hong and Cha were best friends in undergrad and later worked together at Bolthouse in strategy and innovation, developing new product ideas. </p><p>They both became lactose intolerant in their early 20s and launched their banana-based ice-cream brand out of their love for indulgent desserts. Hong left her job at Bolthouse at the beginning of 2016 and Cha left hers about a month before they established the company on Halloween of 2016.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Courtesy of Hakuna Brands</span></p><p class="caption">Hakuna Brands cofounders, Hannah Hong and Mollie Cha, have been best friends since college and still prioritize their friendship as business partners.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2><strong>Nailing down the recipe and finding a factory</strong></h2><p>It took a while for Hong and Cha to perfect their first recipe, which was inspired by paleo "nice-creams" that use frozen bananas instead of dairy. "You can't just put that in a pint and then sell it. It literally turns into a block of banana ice," Hong said.</p><p>The women tested several iterations in their home kitchens until they found the right, "scoopable" texture. Learning how to make the ice cream was one of their biggest obstacles, since it uses ingredients most dairy-based manufacturers aren't as familiar with. "Most ice cream that's sold commercially, it's made one way and all factories are built to make it that way," Hong said.</p><p>They moved their operations to a small, commercial kitchen and sold their pints (which were labeless deli containers at first) from a freezer in a van they named "Fran," driving down the southern California coast from Thousand Oaks to San Diego several times a week. </p><p>But eventually, they needed to scale. Their next major obstacle was finding a factory that could replicate their recipe - they tried three facilities before landing the right one. "Moving from our tiny hundred-foot square kitchen to a factory was one of the hardest things I've ever done," Hong said.</p><p>The trial-runs required a lot of money, Hong said, which included paying for ingredients and the time spent on the manufacturing line. Each batch had to freeze for 24 hours before they could taste it, so they could see how the ice cream hardened. </p><p>"We had to go through so much to even figure out how to build a frozen business," Hong said. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Courtesy of Hakuna Brands</span></p><p class="caption">Hakuna currently has six flavors of banana-based ice cream and three flavors of frozen bars. In March 2019, the company branched out with oat-milk based ice cream.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2><strong>Best friends and business partners</strong></h2><p>Both Hong and Cha come from families who started their own businesses, so they learned second-hand that it can be difficult to run a business with friends or family. </p><p>The founders are best friends first and foremost. Before making their business official and signing the LLC papers, they talked about their priorities for both the business and their relationship. </p><p>In 2018, they added to their full-time team. Grace Robbin became director of product development, and Margie Clark became director of sales and marketing. Hong worked with Clark for four years when they were at Bolthouse. </p><p>Hong said she's learned how important is it to choose her team wisely, especially as a small business. The factories were primarily owned and operated by men, and Hong said that intimidated her. She knew how her recipe was supposed to turn out, but the manufactured product wasn't right. "I knew it was different. It wasn't just in my head," Hong said.</p><p>After three factories didn't work out, she realized she needed to be more confident in her product. When the next factory told her "this is just how your ice cream is," she overnight-shipped a pint from Hakuna's kitchen. Once the factory workers tasted it, she said they realized it was different. "I think that really helped me build my confidence," Hong said.</p><p>In January 2017, Hakuna started selling in grocery stores - its first retailer was an independent grocer in Los Angeles. Today, the brand is sold in 430 California locations, including Whole Foods and Sprouts Farmers Market. </p><p>Hakuna was bootstrapped until January 2019, when it held a friends and family funding round. Two millennial women just won $100,000 to scale their vegan ice cream business. Here's how they perfected their 'scoopable' banana-based recipe and landed their pints on Whole Foods shelves.

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="900700" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chobani">Chobani</keyword> is offering its factory workers paid time off and on-site <keyword id="8764262" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid">COVID</keyword> vaccination clinics.</li><li>It's one of multiple food companies that's offering jabs at <keyword id="6355058" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="work">work</keyword> and incentives for vaccines.</li><li>Chobani is betting that availability and education will help get its workforce to herd immunity.</li></ul><p>COVID-19 complicated work for employees at food-producing factories. As vaccines become more widely distributed, their employers are looking for ways to bring the shots to them - and give them incentives to get one.</p><p>Chobani, known for its Greek yogurt, is organizing <keyword id="24209" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="vaccine">vaccine</keyword> clinics for the roughly 1,000 workers at its plant in Twin Falls, Idaho. The first takes place Thursday, with another scheduled for April 1. The company is also giving employees six hours of paid time off - three per vaccination, assuming they get a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, said Peter McGuinness, president and COO at Chobani.</p><p>"They're hourly workers, and we don't want them to be penalized in any way, shape or form when they get vaccinated," McGuinness said. Between hourly and corporate roles, Chobani employs about 2,200 people in total. Idaho officials have opened vaccinations up to a wider group of essential workers, including food and agricultural workers, faster than other states, leading Chobani to offer the on-site clinics there first, McGuinness said.</p><p>Food companies found themselves in a tough spot last spring: While they had to take precautions to keep workers safe, such as providing personal protective equipment to workers and reconfiguring their factories for social distancing, demand for groceries only grew as more consumers stayed at home, putting additional pressure on their manufacturing lines. </p><p>Now that vaccine production is scaling up, many food makers are offering incentives for their workers to get jabs. Smoothie maker Bolthouse Farms is <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/one-ceo-dangles-500-bonus-for-workers-to-get-covid-19-vaccinations-11616342400">offering workers a $500 bonus</a> for getting vaccinated in addition to organizing on-sight vaccination, according to the Wall Street Journal. Meat processor Tyson Foods, which had to slow production and even temporarily close some plants due to COVID-19 outbreaks last year, is also hosting on-site vaccinations as well as offering workers up to four hours of pay when they receive a vaccine from a another source, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Business/outbreaks-scandal-tyson-foods-offering-free-site-vaccines/story?id=76340291">ABC News reported</a> earlier this month.</p><p>But getting shots in arms will take more than just offering them at workplaces. Recent <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Business/outbreaks-scandal-tyson-foods-offering-free-site-vaccines/story?id=76340291">polling</a> from Civiqs suggests that significant groups of Americans, including a majority of white Republicans and roughly one third each of Black and Latinx Americans, are either opposed to getting vaccinated or unsure about it. Public health experts have warned that the US risks a resurgence of COVID-19 later this year if enough Americans remain opposed to getting vaccinated.</p><p>McGuiness told Insider that Chobani has hosted town halls for employees with health officials and doctors who work in the communities where its plants are located. "The more educated you are and the more in-the-loop you are on the benefits of the vaccine, the more likely you are to get vaccinated," he said. </p><p>Chobani also expects word of mouth - specifically, vaccinated employees talking about their experience with coworkers who have reservations - to convince others to get vaccinated over time. "That's why I want to do multiple events," McGuiness said, adding that Chobani expects to schedule more on-site clinics, including more at its Twin Falls plant than the two that are already on the calendar.</p><p>McGuiness said that Chobani's plants have stayed open during the pandemic without interruptions and kept pace with demand for its yogurt, creamers, and other products. The company is reportedly <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/foods-brands-expected-ipo-2021-1">considering an IPO</a> for later this year, and it recently signed a distribution agreement with PepsiCo.</p><p>But he said that the focus of the vaccine drive is not to increase factory productivity, adding that the company will follow federal and state guidelines on COVID-19 safety measures in the workplace. "I don't look at this as, 'Hey, three months down the road, if I get more people vaccinated, maybe I can grow more or make more money,'" he said.</p>

<p>The company said the reorganization would shift its "center of gravity", a reference to its troubled soup business that has managed to boost sales only twice in the past five quarters.</p>
<p>The world's largest soup maker said it would now have three divisions - America's simple meals and beverages, global biscuits and snacks, and packaged fresh products, which include seasoned baby carrots. Currently, the company has five divisions.</p>
<p>The iconic Campbell's brand founded in 1869, also includes Pepperidge Farm, Goldfish, Bolthouse Farms, V8, Swanson, Prego, Pace, Plum Organics, Arnott's, Tim Tam, Royal Dansk and Kjeldsens in its portfolio.</p>

<p>Weak sales prompted Chief Executive Denise Morrison to launch a turnaround program after taking office in 2011, spending hundreds of millions of dollars to revamp the company's marketing and packaging strategies.</p>
<p>"The adoption of our new enterprise structure will be an important milestone for Campbell," Morrison said in a <a href="http://investor.campbellsoupcompany.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=88650&amp;p=irol-newsArticle&amp;ID=2011711" target="_blank">company news release</a>. "This reorganization will help unlock the value of our brands and the growth potential of our business. It will drive focused investment on our largest growth opportunities. It is the logical next step in our ongoing effort to shift our company's center of gravity, accelerate our growth trajectory and maximize value for our shareholders."</p>
<p>New product launches included "to-go" soups that could be made in a Keurig Green Mountain Inc coffee machine. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The company also acquired or developed a slew of brands and products such as puffed Goldfish snacks and Bolthouse Farms, a producer of fresh carrots and beverages.</span></p>
<p>The turnaround efforts have yet to bear fruit on a sustained basis, however.</p>
<p>Increasing competition from store brands, private labels and niche producers such as Pacific of Oregon, Harris Foods Co and Amy's Kitchen Inc, have also hurt the company's soup business. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Thursday's reorganization will make the company more streamlined and simplified, according to Campbell's statement.</span></p>
<p>Campbell's shares were little changed at $45.73 in early trading on the New York Stock Exchange.</p>
<p>The company is scheduled to report second-quarter results on Feb. 25.</p>
