Bobble AI report is based on over 50 million smartphone users’ (in 640+ Indian cities) data processed in a privacy-compliant manner. It also revealed that while tier 1 cities dominate the fashion festival figures, transactions in tier 2 cities like Jaipur, Guwahati, Lucknow, Kochi, Mysore, and Bhubaneswar are at an all-time high – up 82% over the previous year. Apart from that, the majority of consumers are between the ages of 26 and 35 accounting for 37%, and between the ages of 18 and 25, accounting for 26% with 72% males and 28% females. According to the data intelligence company’s survey on the state of eCommerce in India, which was conducted across Tier 1, 2 and 3, beauty e-commerce apps usage grew by 64%, whereas fashion e-commerce grew by 368% over the past year. The festive period has only led the two e-commerce domains to skyrocket, with at least two transactions completed by shopaholics during the fashion festivals. In an interesting insight highlighted by the study, India’s fashion e-commerce industry has transformed from ‘Monopoly’ to ‘Ludo.’ Fashion giant Myntra faced tough competition from its competitive counterparts, Meesho, Ajio, and TataCliq. While almost 46% of all transactions belonged to Myntra during the 2020 festive period, Ajio bagged around 69% of all transactions in 2021. The share of Myntra’s active users, also using Meesho, Ajio, and TataCliq has also increased significantly, indicating how users are exploring multiple options this year. The battle of the e-commerce legends, Amazon, and Flipkart is worth noting, with Flipkart’s active user base rising 83% in 2021 online shopping festival compared to Amazon’s 72%. Despite the fact that Flipkart is dominating in terms of engagement metrics like search frequency and active sessions, Amazon is winning in terms of transactions, significantly less average session times. Apart from fashion e-commerce, interesting insights have also emerged from the beauty e-commerce segment. Leading players Nykaa and Purplle locked horns this festive season – and Purplle took a piece from Nykaa’s pie. Ajio and Myntra locked horns this festive season in fashion e-commerce: Report

<ul><li>Fintech app PhonePe supasses <keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword> in advertising war. </li><li><keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword> – despite not opting for IPL advertising – led almost all metrics in the food category, edging out <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword>. </li><li>Among the shopping apps, Meesho’s open rate – or the number of times users logged on to the app – declined from pre-IPL to post-IPL , whereas <keyword id="319719" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="myntra" source="Orion">Myntra</keyword>’s grew. </li></ul>IPL advertising gives brands access to millions of Indians – the 2022 edition had a total of 229 million television viewers. It is often referred to as ‘India’s Superbowl’ in terms of advertising worth. Bobble AI’s latest market intelligence report analysed data from 80 million android smartphones to study the impact of IPL advertising by a range of apps including Myntra, Dream11, Meesho, <keyword id="685487" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="spotify" source="Orion">Spotify</keyword>, Swiggy, and <keyword id="12651286" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-neu" source="Orion">Tata Neu</keyword>. An analysis of the impact of television advertising around IPL has found that fintech application PhonePe reaped the maximum benefits with highest user penetration rate post-IPL. This was followed by Paytm and Meesho. PhonePe, Myntra and Dream11 saw the largest increase in the average session per user post IPL. Average session per user is defined as the average number of times the app is opened in the given timeframe. However, Zomato led almost all the metrics in the food category, despite not opting for IPL advertising. The report studied smartphone user behaviour during three time frames – Pre IPL 2022, During IPL 2022 and Post IPL 2022. The majority of users during IPL were aged between 18-24 years, the survey found. Tata Neu download surged above 8000% but didn’t gain users post IPL The total installations increased exponentially for the Tata Neu app (8438.1%) as the app's marketing was launched with IPL. Despite this, Tata Neu didn’t gain any users post-IPL and users didn’t open the app after 15 days of downloading it. PhonePe app scored over Paytm in the number of app downloads. Spotify and Swiggy also saw a spike of more than 50% in installations. Dream 11 saw over 79% increase in app downloads across the three periods. New app installations for Myntra were 25 times higher than that of Meesho’s. “Advertising during the IPL skyrockets, giving brands a significant amount of reach to their existing customers and target audience. Zomato and PhonePe surpassed their competitors Swiggy and Paytm in almost every category, including the overall market penetration. Since the pandemic, online platforms have gained steady ground,” said <keyword id="718190" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tabrez-alam" source="Orion">Tabrez Alam</keyword>, chief of business strategy, Bobble AI. Bobble AI’s report said that most of the apps gained in terms of average session per user (ASU) except for Tata Neu – which saw a 67% reduction. PhonePe reported an over 22% increase in ASU, beating Paytm that saw a near 14% rise in ASU post IPL. However, there was no change in ASU for the Swiggy app. Dream11 saw an 83% increase in active users (AUs) during IPL. Active users are the total users who were active on the said application in the given timeframe. Myntra’s AUs were substantially higher than Meesho's. PhonePe edged out Paytm for AUs in the fintech industry. Zomato overtakes Swiggy without IPL advertising Bobble AI also analysed whether advertising during IPL gave an edge to Swiggy over Zomato or not. The data showed that Swiggy didn’t get any such edge. Zomato performed better than Swiggy on all metrics apart from the churn rate. Churn rate is the percentage of active users who opened the application in the previous 15 days but did not open it in the subsequent 15 days. Zomato’s open rate (7.3%) – defined as the number of times users logged into an app – was more than Swiggy’s (1.93%). Zomato had over 38% more active users than Swiggy during IPL. Advertising during IPL didn’t help Swiggy perform better than Zomato, its main competitor. E-commerce channels are expected to capture 61 per cent of the overall sales, down from 66 per cent last year, according to Counterpoint Research. The smartphone retail average selling price (<keyword id="218869" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="asp" source="Orion">ASP</keyword>) during the festive season will grow 12 per cent to reach its highest ever at $242, although the unit sales may decline by 9 per cent (on-year). India's smartphone market is entering this festive season with the highest ever channel inventory of over 10 weeks, the report noted. "The festive season has been the highlight of India's smartphone market where almost 20 per cent of the annual sales happen over four-five weeks. Hence, this festive period is important for all the players in the value chain," said senior analyst <keyword id="9638737" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="prachir-singh" source="Orion">Prachir Singh</keyword>. This year, the sales will start on September 23 with Amazon's Great India Festival and Flipkart's Big Billion Days. "According to our forecast, the festive season smartphone sales will account for around $7.7 billion, the highest ever. However, we estimate a 9 per cent YoY decline in terms of shipments. We have seen a similar trend in China's 618 festival this year, where shipments declined 10 per cent YoY," Singh noted. The festive shopping season will end with the Diwali sale. According to Research Director <keyword id="1943940" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tarun-pathak" source="Orion">Tarun Pathak</keyword>, the retail ASP (average selling price), similar to the total value, will be the highest ever and may record 12-15 per cent YoY growth. The consumer demand is likely to be high, especially in the mid-tier and premium segments. The various promotions and offers targeting the Rs 15,000 segments have already been announced by the brands and channels on social media. "The increasing affordability of these devices due to promotions and offers will drive their sales. This will be further supported by the 4G-to-5G migration. According to our estimates, one out of every three smartphones sold during the festive season will be a 5G smartphone," said <keyword id="6371466" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pathak" source="Orion">Pathak</keyword>. In terms of channels, the offline market players are pushing promotions and offers that are on par with their online counterparts. "The entry-tier and budget segments have witnessed a considerable decline in recent quarters. India to see record smartphone sales worth ₹ 61,000 cr this festive season

NASSCOM says Budget 2021 should ensure ESOPs are taxed only when shares are sold

From just two OTT platform providers in 2012 to about 40 players at present, the OTT revolution has come a long way in India. Estimates from Phando Corp suggest that monthly active users (MAUs) for India’s OTT video sector have grown at a blistering rate of 300% since 2019 to reach 680 million in 2021, with rural and tier 2 &amp; 3 cities consumption reaching an 80% share. West Versus India Several factors including the widespread availability of broadband infrastructure, the ubiquity of mobile phones and other connected portable devices, and quest for personalised experiences have spurred the adoption of OTT consumption in the Western world. At the same time, technology investments, the emergence of new apps, features, and independent platforms for OTT content have also been growth drivers. Tech companies such as Amazon, Facebook, Apple, YouTube, connected device providers such as Samsung, Xiaomi, LG, and studios such Disney, MGM, Paramount, Sony are among the major corporations who have entered the OTT space, giving a plethora of programming choices to the consumers in the West. The growth in OTT platforms combined with the subsequent content boom has seen vernacular content from different regions gaining international popularity. South Korean dystopian drama broke all records by becoming the most watched content on Netflix by netizens around the world. Similarly, Indian dramas such as Sacred Games and Delhi Crime were viewed and enjoyed by a global audience. As a result, all eyes are now firmly set on opportunities in emerging economies, specifically in the Indian subcontinent, with major players from the west entering the foray with attractive subscription offers, and diverse content catalogues. Some have chosen to collaborate with or acquire local brands to establish a firmer foothold in the region. For example, with the launch of Disney Plus in the US back in 2019, the streaming service promptly expanded to many other countries, including India. However, instead of getting a dedicated app for Indian users, the company acquired the Hotstar streaming platform and soon rebranded to Disney+ Hotstar. The coming together of Disney and Star TV Network (20th Century Fox) attracted tens of millions of subscribers in India and provided them access to a premium catalogue of content from Disney and Star TV. One of the challenges in India is the ability to monetize online content. Research suggests that the Advertising-led Video on Demand (AVOD) model is far more popular than Subscription-led video on demand (SVOD) models given the reluctance of viewers in India to pay for online content. While about 60% of total video viewing in India happens on YouTube, Netflix has 40 Mn monthly active users. Disney Plus Hotstar too has reached the critical mass with its freemium model, well-supported by relevant collaborations, such as sports (read cricket), which drives volume. Also, a KPMG study reveals that, unlike the West, only 10% of viewers access OTT platforms for watching original content. Rather, OTT is used primarily for the convenience of anytime and personal viewing of movies, music, sports or to catch-up with TV content. Driving OTT Growth in India As a country with a population of 1.23 billion, India is the next big market for OTT platforms. Some of the growth drivers for OTT players in India, based on the precedent from the West include: ● Investments in Content Video streaming services are expected to spend around ₹1,920 crore to create original content for India in 2021, driven in part by the sharp rise in audiences during the 2020 lockdown. The platforms will further increase spends, including on sports, to ₹30,000 crore, during 2021-25, according to the latest FICCI-EY media and entertainment industry report. Around 500 original titles are likely to be released in 2021 across platforms, as opposed to 385 titles in 2019 and 220 in 2020. The investment in original content makes sense given that viewers are learning to pay for the content they consume, especially original content. In 2020, 29 million subscribers paid for 53 million OTT video subscriptions (not counting subscriptions bundled along with data plans), a figure that is estimated to increase to 39 million subscribers for 71 million subscriptions in 2021. Netflix has more than 40 originals scheduled for 2021 and is expanding its slate by nearly three times compared to 2020. Amazon Prime Video has 50 local originals in various stages of development and 30 in various stages of production. Demand for original content will likely double by 2023 compared to 2019 levels. ● Content – the New Battlefield for Viewers Increasing number of consumers from tier-2 and tier-3 cities have spurred the production of regional content. Alt Balaji has seen a change after the pandemic. Before the pandemic, the top 8 cities in India contributed to 70% of their total audience; post-April 2020, 60% of the traffic is from other tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Old favourite shows are being re-aired on OTT platforms, while investments in new content production continue. Recently Amazon announced the acquisition of MGM, for $8.45 billion, giving it access to MGM’s library of 4000 film titles and 17,000 TV shows. We have witnessed the emergence of a wide variety of content including Indian content since India has a diverse market with over a dozen languages that are widely spoken across the country. OTT players are shifting their focus towards localisation of their platforms, to be able to connect with the Indian users, be it in terms of regional languages, geography and user experience etc. India already has about 40 OTT players and 10 music streaming apps in existence catering to various entertainment and media demands. This has opened the doors for OTT platforms to promote regional and hyperlocal content. In fact, a leading OTT player recently released 11 shows during the lockdown- all locally curated shows. The share of regional language consumption on OTT platforms is expected to cross 50% of total time spent by 2025, easing past Hindi at 45%. ● Government Regulations The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has, in the past year, stressed the need for some form of regulation of OTT Platforms to streamline the sector. In this regard, the MIB recently notified the Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021. The new rules require OTT platforms to set up a robust three-tier grievance redressal mechanism. The first level will comprise regulation by the OTT Platform itself through a grievance officer. The second level will be an institutional self-regulatory body formed by publishers of content and their associations. This self-regulatory body will comprise industry experts headed by a retired Supreme Court/ High Court judge /eminent personality in the relevant field. At the third level is an inter-department committee constituted by the MIB that will provide oversight and hear appeals for decisions taken at level two or if a complaint is referred to the inter-department committee by MIB. Regulation might help improve the quality of content in the future. ● The Future of OTT - New Applications and Content Innovations There is no doubt that the future of <keyword id="6357922" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="television" source="Orion">television</keyword> is OTT, and the industry is at a nascent stage. Content is the force that defines the direction of evolution in the industry. New applications such as learning, education and fitness are being explored. Pricewaterhouse Coopers reported that in 2018, more than 40% of new internet users in the world were children. Edtech platforms like Byjus and Unacademy use the OTT streaming approach for education. Similarly, possible applications for learning management in corporations are being explored. While fitness was never considered an activity that could be done remotely, the pandemic saw this notion change. According to a Bobble.AI report, besides video conferencing apps and websites, fitness applications such as Lose Weight, Cure.fit, recorded a 104.53% rise in daily active users. Video streaming platforms are also creating content to cater to this trend.
