It was part of a rough day for Weiner as the scandal entered its second week in the news cycle. Weiner was blasted on the Sunday political talk-show circuit, and there are mounting calls for him to drop out of the mayoral race.
Weiner confirmed at a campaign event Sunday morning that his campaign manager, Danny Kedem, had left his post. It's more damaging news for Weiner with the Democratic primary <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/anthony-weiner-carlos-danger-poll-nyc-mayor-christine-quinn-2013-7" target="_blank">just six weeks away and with Weiner collapsing in new polls</a>.
"Danny has left the campaign. He did a remarkable job," Weiner said, vowing to fight on without Kedem.
Weiner admitted last week to online sexual relationships with at least three women after resigning from Congress in 2011. In total, he estimated that he had online relationships with between six and 10 women both during his time in Congress and otherwise.
Also damaging was the brutal day of press Weiner received on the Sunday shows. Fellow Democratic candidate <keyword id="353357" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Christine-Quinn">Christine Quinn</keyword> appeared on "Meet the Press," where she cast Weiner as juvenile and a not-serious candidate. Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) said Weiner was "not psychologically qualified" to be mayor.
Obama campaign and White House veteran <keyword id="126112" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="David-Axelrod">David Axelrod</keyword> said it was time for Weiner to "go away." And in his weekly commentary, CBS' "Face the Nation" host <keyword id="1187211" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bob-Schieffer">Bob Schieffer</keyword> delivered a brutal takedown.
"One: It is not funny, it is sickening. Two: It is important," Schieffer said.
"The mayor of New York is not only the most powerful municipal post in America, but because New York is so big and is the media capital of the world, the mayor of New York occupies a bully pulpit, second in "bullyishness" only to that of the White House.
"The rest of us may not like it, but what the mayor of New York says matters far beyond the New York City limits. Which is why someone with Anthony Weiner's problems has no business there and should leave the race."

Anthony Weiner's Campaign Manager Quits, And He Suffers An Absolutely Brutal Day On The Sunday Talk Shows

Both the House and Senate moved quickly at the end of last week to pass a bill that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/flight-delays-faa-bill-pass-obama-democrats-2013-4" target="_blank">would resolve hundreds of flight delays piling up at airports</a>. The bill came, coincidentally, as Congress was scheduled to head out of Washington for recess, Schieffer noted.
"As if to underline that Washington can always find a way to help itself even if it remains gridlocked when it comes to helping others," Schieffer said, "when the Congress realized late last week that those budget cuts from the so-called sequester were going to cause layoffs of air traffic controllers which would cause delays that would inconvenience them — what happened to gridlock?
"Well, miraculously, it disappeared, and legislation to keep the planes running on time eased through both houses of Congress like it had grease on it.
"How did Members of Congress celebrate the bipartisan breakthrough? They headed out of town — for another vacation."

CBS' BOB SCHIEFFER: 'Miraculously, Washington Can Always Find A Way To Help Itself'

CBS' Schieffer lamented that the sequester was "Washington's own doing." The policy, signed into law as a stipulation of the 2011 Budget Control Act, was designed based on "the idea was that no sane person would allow such cuts to happen." It looks increasingly likely to happen, despite <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/senate-sequester-replacement-bill-plan-sequestration-2013-2" target="_blank">Senate Democrats' introduction a proposal</a> to avert the sequester last week.
Schieffer said the purpose of such massive cuts was designed to make Congress take "responsible steps" toward deficit reduction.
"Well, guess what," Schieffer said. "Even Washington managed to underestimate its own ineptitude. The sequester and the draconian cuts are about to happen, because the White House and Congress can't close the partisan divide and figure out what to do with them — which is disheartening, to say the least."
Schieffer, however, did find one bit of good news in the sequester. He referred to a quote from President Ronald Reagan about how in the event of an alien invasion, citizens of different countries would put aside their differences to work together.
"If aliens do attack, our leaders will be well-rested to meet that challenge," Schieffer said sarcastically, pointing out how Congress is now on recess and President <keyword id="15962" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Barack-Obama">Barack Obama</keyword> is vacationing this weekend in Florida.

CBS' BOB SCHIEFFER: 'Even Washington Managed To Underestimate Its Own Ineptitude' On The Sequester

Stewart told the CBS host that he has seen an "explosive conversation, but not a very pragmatic one" that has ensued in the wake of the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., last month.
Schieffer agreed, seeming to tilt toward promotion of stricter legislation on guns.
"If we’re not going to do something now — if killing little people in kindergarten is not enough to say, 'We’ve got to do something here. We’ve got to get serious,' then I have a question: What is enough?"
Schieffer said it was not a very "radical" idea to favor more restrictions on guns.
"It always comes down to the people who turn it around and say they're going to take away the guy's gun who goes hunting or lives out in the country," he said. "And that’s not what it’s about. It’s about keeping these weapons with this tremendous killing power out of the hands of deranged people. That does not seem all that radical an idea. People keep rat poison in their house to kill rodents, but they keep it on the top shelf."
He told Stewart that the newsroom debate should focus on helping people to "understand what the issues are, not the issues as they’re told by these interest groups."

John McCain and Al Franken face off in funny mock-NFL debate

"And punters think it won't be too long before he departs," Baylis added, "with the odds of him leaving this year now into 12/5 from 11/2 - a 27% chance [up] from 16% before the latest allegations."<h2>'Drip, drip, drip'</h2>Allan Lichtman, a political historian and American University professor political historian, said the case is "becoming too compelling for even Republicans to resist an impeachment inquiry," which they may be tempted to use "to get to the bottom of the many controversies swirling around this administration." "Otherwise it's going to be drip, drip, drip, which is not good even for Republicans," Lichtman said. Indeed, the latest Trump-Comey bombshell came 24 hours after the previous - that Trump had disclosed highly classified information to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during a meeting in the Oval Office last week.It also came less than a week after the Trump administration <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-did-trump-fire-comey-fbi-director-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">wavered in its public statements</a> about Comey's dismissal, with Trump telling NBC's Lester Holt that "the Russia thing" was on his mind when he fired Comey. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are throwing around the 'I' word amid the latest Trump-Comey bombshell

The interview will partially air Monday on "CBS This Morning," and will be broadcast on PBS in its entirety on the same day President Obama grants interviews with six networks, and just one day before <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2013/09/07/obama-to-grant-six-interviews-on-eve-of-syria-speech/">addressing the nation in a speech pushing for a military strike against Syria.</a>
The interview took place at the Presidential palace in Damascus.
Rose gave a preview of the content on CBS's "Face The Nation" Sunday, telling Bob Schieffer that Assad "denied that he had anything to do with the attack" and "he denied that he knew in fact, that there was a chemical attack."
"He said there was not evidence yet to make a conclusive judgement," Rose added.

The White House discounted Assad's denial to Rose that he used chemical weapons. While the Obama administration has not presented evidence showing that Assad directly ordered the strike, the White House maintains that only the Assad regime had the wherewithal to conduct such an operation and that ultimately Assad is responsible.
"It doesn't surprise us that someone who would kill thousands of his own people, including hundreds of children with poison gas, would also lie about it," said National Security Council spokesman Bernadette Meehan.
When asked about <keyword id="6354913" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Syria">Syria</keyword>'s chemical weapons stockpiles, <a href="http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2013/09/charlie-rose-interviews-bashar-alassad-172052.html">Assad told Rose that he</a> would not "confirm or deny that we do have them" but if in fact they did, "they are in centralized control and no one else has access to them."
Assad will also talk about his preparations and fears of a U.S. military strike, as well as talking about his father.
Talks of U.S.-led intervention into the more than two-year-old civil war have heightened after an alleged chemical weapons attack on Aug. 21 in a Damascus suburb. The Obama administration has said <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/syria-videos-chemical-weapons-attacks-sarin-gas-obama-2013-9">more than 1,400 people died</a>, many of them children.

PBS To Air Interview With Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad

"I have no affection for Assad," Powell told Bob Schieffer on CBS' "Face the Nation," while mentioning he knows the Syrian president and has personally dealt with him. "He's a pathological liar."
However, Powell said, "I am less sure of the resistance. What do they represent? Is it becoming even more radicalized with more al Qaeda coming in, and what would it look like if they prevailed and Assad went? I don't know."
Calls for U.S.-led intervention have intensified in recent days after <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/reported-chemical-weapons-attack-in-syria-2013-8">horrifying video footage</a> emerged of an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/syrian-hospitals-chemical-attack-symptoms-2013-8">alleged chemical attack on Aug. 21</a>. A senior administration official harbored "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/syria-chemical-weapons-used-obama-response-assad-rebels-2013-8">very little doubt</a>" the Assad regime was behind the attack, despite their denials.
"In both Egypt and <keyword id="6354913" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Syria">Syria</keyword>, America has to take a much more clever role," Powell said. "We shouldn't go around thinking that we can really make things happen. We can influence things and we can be ready to help people when problems have been resolved or one side has prevailed over the other."
"To think that we can change things immediately just because we're America, that's not necessarily the case," Powell said. "These are internal struggles."
His comments are in stark contrast to Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham, who both have called for "limited <keyword id="6359526" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Military">military</keyword> actions ... that can change the balance of power."
In a joint statement from both Republicans, <a href="http://www.mccain.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=PressOffice.PressReleases&amp;ContentRecord_id=b59b1ee5-f7c7-2120-3187-ec1896efbb48">they said</a> "the longer the conflict in Syria goes on, the worse and worse it gets and the more it spreads throughout the region."
A retired four-star general, Powell served as Secretary of State during the Bush administration from 2001-2005. His testimony to the United Nations in 2003 was instrumental in garnering international support for the Iraq war.

COLIN POWELL: Syria Is An 'Internal Struggle' That Is Beyond US Capabilities

But Bloomberg is facing some intense opposition from corporate giant <keyword id="6377922" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Starbucks">Starbucks</keyword>. The coffee chain said it would make no immediate changes to its business based on the ban. 
Bloomberg told television show Face The Nation <a href="http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/03/11/last-day-for-new-yorkers-to-buy-super-sized-sugary-drinks-in-nyc/">that Starbucks</a> not changing its offerings is "ridiculous." 
When interviewer Bob Schieffer <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-3460_162-57573442/bloomberg-pushes-background-checks/">pointed out</a> that Starbucks wasn't changing its offerings because it was confused about which of its products would fall under the ban, Bloomberg retorted that the corporation should know better. 
“Starbucks knows how to market things, knows how to package things,” <a href="http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/03/11/last-day-for-new-yorkers-to-buy-super-sized-sugary-drinks-in-nyc/">Bloomberg said</a>. “They can change instantly when it’s in their interest to do so.”
The new mandate limits sugary drinks sold at restaurants, movie theaters, street carts, and more to 16 ounces. But some drinks, such as those made up of 50 percent milk or more, are exempt. 
It will be <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-sugar-police-will-have-17-oz-cups-2013-3">enforced by city health inspectors</a> during inspections, when restaurants violating the ban will lose points on their sanitation score. It's not clear, however, how significant the penalities will be or whether the city would take stronger action to target as big an offender as Starbucks.
Starbucks spokeswoman Linda Mills told us that it would not make immediate changes to its menu because of the ban. 
"Our understanding is that any beverage with 50 percent or more milk is exempt from the ruling," Mills said. "Because many of our beverages are made from milk or are customized by the customer, many of our beverages fall outside the ban." 
But Starbucks will still continue to offer beverages like its <a href="http://www.starbucks.com/menu/drinks/tazo-tea/shaken-iced-green-tea-lemonade">green iced-tea lemonade</a> in larger sizes too. That drink doesn't contain milk but is high in sugar. 
Starbucks also "recognizes pending litigation" about the ban and "doesn't want to make any knee-jerk reactions," Mills said. 
The American Beverage Association filed to stop the ban until a judge decides on whether to stop it altogether. 
Starbucks competitor Dunkin' Donuts is taking the mandate seriously. 
At Dunkin', customers will have to add their own sugar or flavors to large and extra-large hot beverage and medium and large iced beverages. The company also announced that sweet beverages like hot chocolate will only <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-new-yorks-soda-ban-affects-coffee-2013-3">be available</a> in small and medium sizes.
Bloomberg's ban, which only affects restaurants and places that sell prepared foods, is meant to combat obesity. 
Critics of the ban say it will be difficult to enforce and will make business less efficient. 
For example, instead of a Dunkin' Donuts employee adding sugar to a drink and handing it off, customers will have to line up to add their own sugar.
